- 0:22SPEAKER_00: In a world where we value equality, we usually talk about power as if it's a bad thing.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: But power is just like time, money, or any other resource.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It's a tool that can be used for good or for bad.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Writers don't think about what we do typically in terms of power.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Instead, we use words like creativity, craft, platform, audience, or entrepreneurship.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: But power?
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Power is a concept that feels a little bit old-fashioned, if not outright outdated these days.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But keep in mind that power is just influence.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: When you have power as a writer, you can change people's minds.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: You can tell a story that has impact.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You can write books, sermons, lessons, articles, or other content and know that it can influence other people.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Now, if power as a writer is a good thing, how do you get it?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Well, there are a lot of ways, such as having the right connections or even just getting lucky.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: But those are external situations that you can't predict or control.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: There's really only one surefire way to become powerful as a writer.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid's Tale, said at best, she said, a word after a word after a word is power.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And by the way, this was also the title of a 2019 documentary where she discusses her life and work.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Now the meaning of this phrase is pretty obvious.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: When you put down one word after another, eventually you wind up with something that you can share.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And when you accumulate those words and they become books, screenplays, speeches, or other types of shareable content, they can have more power than you can possibly imagine.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Your words have power.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So get out there today and put down not just one word, but a word after a word after a word.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Whenever you write today, remember this words are powerful, and you can use this power to create good in the world.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
