- 0:22Speaker 1: and us alongside glad to have you with us good
- 0:25Speaker 1: afternoon everybody welcome to the program here on sports radio
- 0:28Speaker 1: am 13 under the zone and where you can always
- 0:31Speaker 1: listen to us absolutely free of charge on the easy-to-download,
- 0:35Speaker 1: if you haven't already, iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Way.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Thank you very much for joining us. The producer is
- 0:42Speaker 1: Jake Herman alongside. Here's what we have for you. We
- 0:45Speaker 1: have a one-hour edition of the program this year. You
- 0:47Speaker 1: have me until 3 o'clock. Because at 3, we're going
- 0:50Speaker 1: to go out to Covert on 183 on Research out
- 0:53Speaker 1: there near Duval, right next to Rudy's Country's Tour and Barbecue.
- 0:57Speaker 1: We're going to go out there for a special football
- 1:00Speaker 1: weekend preview program. And that's going to be spearheaded and
- 1:05Speaker 1: anchored by none other than Mike Hardball Harge, who will
- 1:09Speaker 1: be joined by Mark Henry and Eric Henry, right? Henry,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Henry one and Henry two. Don't ask him which one
- 1:14Speaker 1: is Henry one or Henry. I think they'll both kind
- 1:15Speaker 1: of defer to Mark on that. Don't you think?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, something tells me.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that probably would. But and they're not related, but
- 1:21Speaker 1: they are Henry's. So they'll be out there and they're
- 1:25Speaker 1: going to have a two hour break. Football weekend preview
- 1:27Speaker 1: where they'll look back at that NFL game that was
- 1:30Speaker 1: played last night and the one the night before. They'll
- 1:32Speaker 1: look obviously at Texas, Ohio State, and the college football
- 1:37Speaker 1: scene as well. In this hour, one of the things
- 1:41Speaker 1: that we have coming up is last night we brought
- 1:46Speaker 1: you Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark. And we were talking
- 1:50Speaker 1: about it yesterday and played you one little excerpt from
- 1:53Speaker 1: it because our special guest was Mack Brown.
- 1:55Speaker 3: And it was great.
- 1:56Speaker 1: We had coach with us almost all the way through
- 1:58Speaker 1: the entire program. And we brought you a segment where
- 2:05Speaker 1: it was about the state of college football. Now, on Fridays,
- 2:09Speaker 1: what we normally do is we bring you another excerpt
- 2:12Speaker 1: from that show, and it's kind of the game plan segment.
- 2:15Speaker 1: In other words, it's a look at the opponent. And
- 2:18Speaker 1: Sark and I do that, but we've got Mack Brown
- 2:20Speaker 1: with us as well. And so it'll be a look
- 2:23Speaker 1: at this matchup. tomorrow evening with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And of course, you can hear the game on our
- 2:33Speaker 1: sister station, 98.1 FM KVET, but our Longhorns game day
- 2:37Speaker 1: coverage will begin at 2.30 in the afternoon. So it'll
- 2:42Speaker 1: be at 2.30 with the third and Longhorn podcast guys.
- 2:48Speaker 1: They have their hour-long preview. And then that'll really whet
- 2:52Speaker 1: your appetite for Longhorn's game day at 3.30. 3.30 to 5.30
- 2:57Speaker 1: will be Mike Hardball, Harge, Mark Henry, Jake Herman will
- 3:01Speaker 1: be out there tomorrow, right? Yep, I'll be out there.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Completely hydrated, right?
- 3:06Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 2: The hydrating starts tonight, Craig.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, good idea. Smart move. So you guys will be
- 3:11Speaker 1: out there at Bevo Boulevard in that Winship area. We
- 3:15Speaker 1: used to say Winship Circle. It's less a circle and
- 3:17Speaker 1: more an area now, right?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's flat now.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Still the same food trucks, though.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Maybe some new offerings if you haven't been down there,
- 3:23Speaker 5: if you didn't make it out for the Texas State game.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So you say it's flat now. It's not so much
- 3:27Speaker 1: a circle. Remember the Matthew McConaughey thing? How about a
- 3:30Speaker 1: flat circle? A dime is a flat circle.
- 3:33Speaker 5: If you're just tuning in, you're not subscribed to the
- 3:37Speaker 5: audio book for green lights.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Yeah, right.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So you guys will be out there at 3.30. Network
- 3:43Speaker 1: pregame at 5.30. The kickoff, I'm told, 6.49 p.m. Okay, well,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you got time to go to the bathroom.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you do.
- 3:53Speaker 1: A lot of time to get in there and get
- 3:54Speaker 1: rehydrated and all that kind of stuff. And we got
- 3:56Speaker 1: some good things we're going to present in our network
- 3:58Speaker 1: pregame as well. So that's to let you know that
- 4:02Speaker 1: our game day coverage will begin at 2.30 with the
- 4:06Speaker 1: third and Longhorn podcast, guys. So they'll bring that to
- 4:09Speaker 1: you first. And then our Longhorn's game day program will
- 4:14Speaker 1: be at 3.30 and then 5.30, the network pregame. And
- 4:18Speaker 1: that will start on 98.1 FM KVET because we have
- 4:22Speaker 1: Round Rock Express game here on the zone. But obviously,
- 4:25Speaker 1: all of the pregame listening will be right here on
- 4:29Speaker 1: the zone and then just flip over to 98.1 FM KVET,
- 4:33Speaker 1: the home of Austin's all-time country favorites. You flip over
- 4:36Speaker 1: that for the game broadcast as well. I'm also told,
- 4:41Speaker 1: for those of you who want to know, I've had
- 4:42Speaker 1: a lot of people ask me about it. I think
- 4:44Speaker 1: we do have the in-stadium frequency where you can listen
- 4:51Speaker 1: at 89.9 FM, 89.9 inside the stadium and in real
- 4:53Speaker 1: time off of that. So there's that as well. Coming up,
- 5:00Speaker 1: like I said, in a few minutes, we're going to
- 5:04Speaker 1: have that segment from the show. We will have Inconceivable.
- 5:08Speaker 1: This is, after all, Friday. And what does Friday mean
- 5:10Speaker 1: with Inconceivable, Jake?
- 5:12Speaker 5: Well, for the folks maybe listening in over at Covert
- 5:14Speaker 5: Fort of Austin that hadn't heard it yet, a trip
- 5:17Speaker 5: down to the Sunshine State, home of Eric Henry, coincidentally enough.
- 5:22Speaker 1: That's right.
- 5:22Speaker 5: The most flaccid of the lower 48. To grab the
- 5:25Speaker 5: low-hanging fruit, that is Florida Man Friday.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And I think we have, I have to look at this. Now,
- 5:34Speaker 1: it is Florida. There's some sports with this Florida Man
- 5:38Speaker 1: installment and some other things as well. So we'll get
- 5:40Speaker 1: to that. And so that's what we have coming up
- 5:45Speaker 1: in this now 53-minute edition of the program to bring you.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I want to start off with what many programs were
- 5:56Speaker 1: starting off today, including ESPN SportsCenter and local newscast. And
- 6:01Speaker 1: that is commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9-11 national
- 6:06Speaker 1: tragedy that happened.
- 6:09Speaker 3: It has.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Obviously, observances are going on across the nation for this. And,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, you continue to have the thoughts and prayers
- 6:21Speaker 1: with those who were affected by the tragedy, those who
- 6:24Speaker 1: lost loved ones there, those whose lives were forever changed,
- 6:30Speaker 1: not only by what happened with the terrorist attacks, but those,
- 6:35Speaker 1: the first responders whose lives were forever altered. even in
- 6:41Speaker 1: shortening their own lives due to the dangerous environment that
- 6:47Speaker 1: they were in and trying to rescue as many as
- 6:49Speaker 1: they could and the long-term health effects that happened as
- 6:52Speaker 1: a result of that. That's why today there was the
- 6:58Speaker 1: observance that had been going on every year of the
- 7:03Speaker 1: six seconds that happened with the first plane hitting the
- 7:08Speaker 1: first of the towers, the Twin Towers. They've added a
- 7:11Speaker 1: second this year, and that is also to remember the
- 7:17Speaker 1: first responders who were involved with this. And I think
- 7:20Speaker 1: that is right and proper as well. The other thing
- 7:25Speaker 1: that's come from this is that, and it's unfortunate that
- 7:30Speaker 1: it's happened this way, but we've come to find out
- 7:35Speaker 1: that with few exceptions, When we get into the category of,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I remember where I was when fill in the blank.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Most of the time, the fill in the blank was
- 7:50Speaker 1: a national tragedy or a disaster. A lot of the
- 7:53Speaker 1: older school folks remember where they were with the JFK assassination.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I was three years old, so I have no memory
- 8:02Speaker 1: of that. But on the positive side, Many, many people
- 8:09Speaker 1: remember where they were with the first moon landing and
- 8:13Speaker 1: Neil Armstrong, one small step for men, one giant leap
- 8:17Speaker 1: for mankind. I was not quite nine years old, but
- 8:23Speaker 1: I remember sitting on my parents' living room carpet, watching
- 8:27Speaker 1: that on television with my grandparents and aunt and uncle
- 8:31Speaker 1: and my parents and my brothers and my sister, and
- 8:33Speaker 1: we were all just attuned to it. And I do
- 8:39Speaker 1: think that a lot of folks remember where they were,
- 8:42Speaker 1: especially in the sporting world. A lot of folks remember
- 8:45Speaker 1: where they were when the shutdown happened with the COVID-19 pandemic,
- 8:50Speaker 1: when it launched there in March of 2020. I know
- 8:54Speaker 1: that I will never forget being courtside. We were actually
- 8:57Speaker 1: on the air doing local pregame. And I was about
- 9:02Speaker 1: to break away from that clear, our broadcast communications to
- 9:07Speaker 1: reconnect to our Learfield studios for the network broadcast that
- 9:13Speaker 1: was going to begin at 11 a.m. on that Friday
- 9:17Speaker 1: because Texas was playing Texas Tech in the quarterfinals of
- 9:20Speaker 1: the Big 12 tournament, and that was an 11.30 tip-off.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So it was about 10.50 a.m. We were still on
- 9:29Speaker 1: the air, and I was about to clear it, and
- 9:32Speaker 1: I'll never forget it. the director of basketball operations for Texas,
- 9:36Speaker 1: Cody Hatt, walked by. I could see him. The teams
- 9:39Speaker 1: had been out on the floor warming up. And then
- 9:41Speaker 1: they all went in at the same time. Not altogether unusual,
- 9:45Speaker 1: but they all kind of turned pretty quickly and ran inside.
- 9:49Speaker 1: And I saw the coaches going inside. And Cody, who was, again,
- 9:52Speaker 1: the director of operations for basketball, looked across the table
- 9:57Speaker 1: and saw me talking on the air, wearing the head
- 10:00Speaker 1: And our eyes met. And he gave me the throat
- 10:03Speaker 1: slash thing, like, it's not going to happen. And when
- 10:06Speaker 1: I'd recorded the pregame interview that morning with Shaka Smart,
- 10:10Speaker 1: he said, we can go ahead and do this. He said,
- 10:12Speaker 1: but I don't think we're going to play. And I said,
- 10:14Speaker 1: do you know something?
- 10:15Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He goes, well, I know the athletic directors are meeting
- 10:17Speaker 1: right now. And we went ahead and recorded it. And
- 10:19Speaker 1: of course, it never aired. But we stayed on the
- 10:22Speaker 1: air afterwards because we carried the press conference of Bob Bowlesby,
- 10:26Speaker 1: the Big 12 commissioner, on what was happening. So always,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I have a very clear memory and recollection of that.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I also have a very clear memory and recollection of
- 10:37Speaker 1: the morning of 9-11. I was not quite 41. It
- 10:40Speaker 1: was 40 years old. It was five days before my birthday.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And I was working here at this radio station, And
- 10:50Speaker 1: in those days, we were doing a Thursday night high
- 10:54Speaker 1: school football game of the week. And it was me
- 10:58Speaker 1: calling it with Chad Hastings, who was on our staff,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and I think he works with Orange Bloods now. So
- 11:05Speaker 1: we had a game scheduled for that Thursday night. Remember,
- 11:08Speaker 1: 9-11-2001 happened on a Tuesday. And two days after that,
- 11:15Speaker 1: we were scheduled to broadcast a game between Kerrville-Tyvee and
- 11:20Speaker 1: what is now Navarro College Prep, back then it was Lanier,
- 11:24Speaker 1: our man on X, CB, the Twitter savant, he's a
- 11:28Speaker 1: Lanier grad, and we were supposed to do that game
- 11:31Speaker 1: in House Park, I had figured I would leave, I
- 11:36Speaker 1: was due to drive, I was going to drive to
- 11:37Speaker 1: Kerrville that morning, and meet with the head coach at
- 11:41Speaker 1: the time, because I liked sitting down face to face,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and then obviously getting, you know, the rosters, and the
- 11:46Speaker 1: two deep lineups, and the stats, and all that kind
- 11:48Speaker 1: of stuff, and it was only one game had been
- 11:51Speaker 1: played so far that season. It was week number two.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And I was planning to go and visit with him.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I was going to drive down to Kerrville about an
- 12:01Speaker 1: hour and a half drive or so, maybe even a
- 12:03Speaker 1: little further, but I was going to go that morning
- 12:06Speaker 1: and meet with him like around nine o'clock in the morning.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I woke up around 5 a.m. So I was going
- 12:12Speaker 1: to leave the house about seven, but I woke up
- 12:15Speaker 1: at 5 a.m. and I was sick, like had a bug.
- 12:19Speaker 1: of some sort, sick as a dog, threw up, all
- 12:22Speaker 1: that other kind of stuff. I go back to bed.
- 12:25Speaker 1: What I did do was I called the field house
- 12:28Speaker 1: and I left a voice message for coach. I'm sorry,
- 12:30Speaker 1: I'm not going to be able to get it. I'm
- 12:31Speaker 1: under the weather, still planning to do the game on
- 12:34Speaker 1: Thursday night. I'll come down and say hi before and
- 12:36Speaker 1: all that other kind of stuff. And, you know, blah, blah, blah,
- 12:39Speaker 1: so on and so forth. And I went back to bed.
- 12:45Speaker 1: So my phone rings and I slept I think I
- 12:49Speaker 1: took some medicine and I, and I went back to
- 12:51Speaker 1: sleep and I was sound asleep, slept through what happened.
- 12:56Speaker 1: So at nine 30, Chad Hastings calls me. Chad said, Hey, uh, uh,
- 13:05Speaker 1: he goes, did you, did you go down the curve?
- 13:07Speaker 1: I said, no, man, I've been sick this morning. And
- 13:09Speaker 1: he said, Oh, okay. He goes, well, he goes, I'm
- 13:12Speaker 1: guessing now we, we, there's a good chance we probably
- 13:15Speaker 1: won't be doing the game. And I said, what are
- 13:16Speaker 1: you talking about? I'll be fine. I'm sick right now.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He goes, no, no, no, no. He goes, I'm talking
- 13:20Speaker 1: about what else? I said, what do you mean what else?
- 13:22Speaker 1: He goes, you just woke up, right? And I said, yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 1: He goes, I'll never forget him saying this. Turn on
- 13:28Speaker 1: your TV. The world's gone crazy. And it's chewing up
- 13:34Speaker 1: my spine. And so then I turned on the TV, obviously,
- 13:37Speaker 1: and I saw everything that happened. Here at the radio station,
- 13:42Speaker 1: we went 48 hours of news straight through. I think
- 13:47Speaker 1: we were an ABC News affiliate back then. And we
- 13:51Speaker 1: carried the news for like 48 hours. Oddly enough, ironically,
- 13:58Speaker 1: we actually broadcast the game Thursday night. It went through. Now,
- 14:02Speaker 1: as sporting events were being canceled all across the country,
- 14:05Speaker 1: Texas was supposed to have played that weekend. No, Texas
- 14:10Speaker 1: was not supposed to, but they kind of caught a break,
- 14:14Speaker 1: if you will, on the schedule. It was an open
- 14:16Speaker 1: date for the Longhorns. They'd already played and had an
- 14:17Speaker 1: open date. So they were not scheduled to play that weekend.
- 14:21Speaker 1: But college games, obviously NFL games, all these other contests
- 14:25Speaker 1: were canceled, but not in the state of Texas. Because
- 14:28Speaker 1: what happened was the UIL quickly canvassed all of its 1,200
- 14:34Speaker 1: member schools to say, are you want to cancel the contest?
- 14:38Speaker 1: And like 99% of them said no. We want to
- 14:43Speaker 1: go through with this and, and come to find out
- 14:47Speaker 1: that only two States in the United States canceled their
- 14:50Speaker 1: games that weekend. One was the state of New York
- 14:52Speaker 1: and the other might've been Massachusetts. I can't remember, but
- 14:56Speaker 1: there were, there were only two, every other state in
- 14:58Speaker 1: the United States that we're going to, we're going to
- 14:59Speaker 1: carry off. We're going to have our bands do patriotic, uh, uh,
- 15:04Speaker 1: pageants and programming and things like that. So we did
- 15:06Speaker 1: the game Thursday night and it was a blowout. Ty
- 15:10Speaker 1: V was really good that year and, than Lanier was not.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I think it was something like 48-0 or 52-0. I
- 15:17Speaker 1: think it was a blowout. But it was just so
- 15:20Speaker 1: surreal and weird. And then the next night, Keith Moreland
- 15:24Speaker 1: and I did the game between Westlake and A &
- 15:28Speaker 1: M Consolidated. We went over to College Station. This was
- 15:30Speaker 1: one of the three years that I did not do
- 15:33Speaker 1: the television show, the scoreboard live. I didn't do it
- 15:36Speaker 1: in 2008. in 2001, 2002, 2003, because I was dialing
- 15:42Speaker 1: into becoming the play-by-play voice of the Longhorns after football
- 15:47Speaker 1: in 01, starting with basketball. So I thought I'd be here.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I ended up after that got, everything was going well enough.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Then I went back on Friday nights to going up
- 15:55Speaker 1: and doing the high school show from the studio. But
- 16:00Speaker 1: that one year, 01, Keith and I were doing Westlake
- 16:04Speaker 1: games on this radio station. And we went over to
- 16:08Speaker 1: A & M Consolidated to do the game in College Station.
- 16:11Speaker 1: And they had this huge combined marching band, patriotic halftime performance.
- 16:17Speaker 1: It was really kind of touching. It was very, very
- 16:19Speaker 1: nicely done. And we did that. And Wesley got upset
- 16:23Speaker 1: that night. A & M Consolidated beat them. I think
- 16:25Speaker 1: it was 14 to 10 or something like that. So
- 16:28Speaker 1: that's the very clear, right? I also remember my mom,
- 16:32Speaker 1: my mother was working for the federal bankruptcy court in
- 16:35Speaker 1: Dallas and he evacuated federal buildings. all across the country.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And she worked for the federal bankruptcy court for over
- 16:42Speaker 1: 20 years. And they moved all of the employees out
- 16:49Speaker 1: that afternoon, sent them home afterwards. And that was the
- 16:52Speaker 1: Earl Cabell Federal Building in the middle of downtown Dallas.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Because nobody knew where the next strike might happen, if
- 16:59Speaker 1: indeed it did. After the three that happened, the two
- 17:02Speaker 1: that hit the towers, and then the one that landed,
- 17:05Speaker 1: it crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. So sad to say that
- 17:12Speaker 1: a lot of us, unfortunately, remember where we were on
- 17:15Speaker 1: the day of tragic events. And that's why we remember
- 17:19Speaker 1: that like it was. That was the year you were born,
- 17:22Speaker 1: wasn't it, 01?
- 17:22Speaker 2: I was born in 2000.
- 17:24Speaker 7: Oh.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Still too young to remember.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So the reason why I just say that, I know
- 17:32Speaker 1: people have different memories of that day what happened afterwards
- 17:37Speaker 1: and I'll always remember that that it was a it
- 17:39Speaker 1: was a bizarre surreal thing and football games were played
- 17:43Speaker 1: across the state of Texas I don't think anybody felt
- 17:45Speaker 1: quite right about it but the school administrators wanted to
- 17:48Speaker 1: go through with this so it was that they did
- 17:53Speaker 1: and and we broadcast a game football a football game
- 17:56Speaker 1: 48 hours afterwards a little over 48 hours after the
- 18:00Speaker 1: tragedy and then the next night as well and I'll
- 18:03Speaker 1: always remember that being on the roof of House Park
- 18:07Speaker 1: and how strange it was that night calling a game.
- 18:11Speaker 6: All right.
- 18:13Speaker 1: We'll get back on track here. We're going to hear
- 18:15Speaker 1: from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. We'll also hear from
- 18:18Speaker 1: Mack Brown in that segment of Longhorn Weekly that aired
- 18:21Speaker 1: last night. We'll bring you that segment. Take a look
- 18:24Speaker 1: at the Ohio State Buckeyes today on 13 Under the Zone.
- 18:27Speaker 3: My city of ruins. My city of ruins.
- 18:39Speaker 1: The great Bruce Springsteen with My City in Ruins, which was, what,
- 18:43Speaker 1: put on the album and was dedicated to what happened.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Even though the song was written prior to 9-11, is
- 18:47Speaker 1: that right?
- 18:48Speaker 5: Yeah, he was working on his album that came out
- 18:50Speaker 5: in 2002.
- 18:51Speaker 2: It's called The Rising.
- 18:52Speaker 5: This was written about Asbury Park, but it quickly became
- 18:55Speaker 5: a 9-11 New York City anthem that was played at
- 18:58Speaker 5: benefit concerts and Message of Hope.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Yep, made sure of that. All right, we continue on
- 19:04Speaker 1: this Friday afternoon on 13 Under the Zone. Of course,
- 19:08Speaker 1: Texas and Ohio State tomorrow. Have you seen what ticket
- 19:13Speaker 1: prices are going for now?
- 19:15Speaker 5: Well, okay, I've seen what people have listed a few
- 19:18Speaker 5: tickets at. The outliers are crazy, but I have not
- 19:21Speaker 5: checked the get-in price in a while.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Let me check right now.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I thought the get-in price was in the several hundred
- 19:27Speaker 1: dollar range.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I see that.
- 19:30Speaker 5: I see 450 at the cheapest right now for a
- 19:33Speaker 5: pair of tickets.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 19:33Speaker 2: There's a couple singles out there in the 400s that
- 19:36Speaker 2: are lower.
- 19:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 1: But there are people that are paying like $ 10, 000 and
- 19:45Speaker 1: stuff for, you know, and I think maybe that's to
- 19:49Speaker 1: be in sweet. I don't know. But I've heard five-figure numbers.
- 19:54Speaker 5: I'm looking at anything in the lower bowl is going
- 19:57Speaker 5: to be about $ 700 or more.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 1: So it must be some other package or something that
- 20:04Speaker 1: brings about that kind of money. Great anticipation, clearly, about
- 20:09Speaker 1: the game. Last night on Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark,
- 20:12Speaker 1: as I mentioned, our special guest was the Hall of
- 20:15Speaker 1: Fame coach, Mack Brown, who, of course, coached three head-to-head
- 20:20Speaker 1: matchups against the Buckeyes, won two of those, the national
- 20:23Speaker 1: championship season of 05. Then after losing to them here
- 20:27Speaker 1: in 06, the last time Ohio State was here in Austin, 2006,
- 20:31Speaker 1: which was a fourth quarter game and went down, even
- 20:33Speaker 1: though it wound up being the final 24-7, it was
- 20:37Speaker 1: still a tight contest in the fourth quarter before the
- 20:39Speaker 1: Buckeyes pulled away James Laurinaitis had a big interception that
- 20:42Speaker 1: he's on the Ohio State staff now. And then, of course,
- 20:46Speaker 1: that memorable Fiesta Bowl following the 2008 season where Texas
- 20:53Speaker 1: had that final drive down the field. Colt McCoy to
- 20:56Speaker 1: our friend and colleague, Quan Cosby, for the touchdown pass
- 21:00Speaker 1: that proved to be the game winner. They won that
- 21:02Speaker 1: contest 24-21. Great game that one was. So Mac was
- 21:07Speaker 1: the head coach of that. And it's usually at this
- 21:10Speaker 1: point of the program where late in the program where
- 21:16Speaker 1: Sark and I break down the opponent and talk about,
- 21:18Speaker 1: you know, the challenge. And we did that with some
- 21:21Speaker 1: input as well for Mac Brown last night on Longhorn Weekly.
- 21:24Speaker 1: You remember this from the times when we used to
- 21:26Speaker 1: do the show. And by the way, Sark, maybe you
- 21:28Speaker 1: should think about this, the week of Mississippi State, which
- 21:31Speaker 1: is Halloween week. We have a show on Longhorn Weekly
- 21:34Speaker 1: where Mac– put on an actual i guess it was
- 21:38Speaker 1: an alien type halloween mask did the whole show you
- 21:41Speaker 1: don't want to do that really did the whole show
- 21:43Speaker 1: i did we must have lost happy play i.
- 21:48Speaker 8: Think we either got beat that game or i did
- 21:51Speaker 8: the soldier boy dance before oklahoma state we were down
- 21:53Speaker 8: 35 14 at halftime on i mean in the third
- 21:56Speaker 8: quarter on the road so we said not doing.
- 21:57Speaker 3: That anymore but.
- 21:59Speaker 6: We did come.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Back and win, and we had Jamal Charles.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Yes, we did.
- 22:03Speaker 8: But some of that stuff doesn't work.
- 22:07Speaker 1: The point I was going to make is that this
- 22:10Speaker 1: is normally the portion of the program where we talk
- 22:12Speaker 1: about the opponent, and we talk quite a bit about him.
- 22:14Speaker 1: But I know, Sark, there are certain things about Ryan
- 22:18Speaker 1: Day's ball club that really leap off the page to you.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Well, they really do.
- 22:21Speaker 9: And I know coaches touched on this, but they have
- 22:24Speaker 9: two NFL head coaches as their coordinators, as their play callers.
- 22:28Speaker 9: And Arthur Smith and Matt Patricia, and these guys are
- 22:31Speaker 9: really good. And they've devised schemes on both sides of
- 22:37Speaker 9: the ball that are high level. They've got players in
- 22:40Speaker 9: their program that have aspirations of playing in the NFL.
- 22:42Speaker 9: So they're running NFL schemes. They want to do well
- 22:45Speaker 9: at them. So they tax you schematically. And then they've
- 22:49Speaker 9: got talent, right? And you combine those two things. There's
- 22:53Speaker 9: a reason that I'm one team in the country, right?
- 22:55Speaker 9: And there's a reason over the last, you know, six,
- 22:58Speaker 9: seven years, they've been in the mix year in and
- 23:00Speaker 9: year out. They won the national title a couple of
- 23:02Speaker 9: years ago after they beat us. They've been in the mix. They've, they've,
- 23:05Speaker 9: they've been in and around this thing and hovering around.
- 23:07Speaker 9: It's not on accident. They've got really good players. You know,
- 23:10Speaker 9: Ryan's done a fantastic job. He's got tremendous support, uh, from,
- 23:14Speaker 9: from a financial standpoint, which we all have to have
- 23:17Speaker 9: in this day and age. He's got two really good
- 23:19Speaker 9: coordinators and he's got a talented team, you know, and,
- 23:22Speaker 9: and so it's not on accident there. They're, they're, they
- 23:24Speaker 9: are the number one team in the country. Um, and then,
- 23:26Speaker 9: you know, that's, That's the part, as we touched on,
- 23:29Speaker 9: that's the part you love. You love the opportunity. Because
- 23:31Speaker 9: you know what? We think we've got a pretty good team.
- 23:33Speaker 9: I think I've got really good coaches. I know I've
- 23:35Speaker 9: got great support. I know we've got a great venue
- 23:37Speaker 9: to play in Saturday night in DKR, and it's going
- 23:39Speaker 9: to be rocking. So it sets the stage for an
- 23:43Speaker 9: epic showdown. And now we've got to make sure we're
- 23:46Speaker 9: doing the work and focusing on the details so that
- 23:49Speaker 9: when those moments come, we can execute at a high level.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Mack, you were asked about this when you were coaching
- 23:55Speaker 1: here about trying to get guys to a crescendo. And
- 23:58Speaker 1: I remember Coach Royal talking about not letting them play
- 24:01Speaker 1: the game in their mind on Tuesday when you had
- 24:03Speaker 1: to build up to that. So, I mean, when you
- 24:06Speaker 1: had games like this, and there were games like this,
- 24:09Speaker 1: how did you approach it during the week with the
- 24:11Speaker 1: guys in terms of the buildup without it getting too
- 24:13Speaker 1: high too early?
- 24:14Speaker 8: Early when I was here, we had a great Tuesday practice.
- 24:18Speaker 8: And Coach Royal was out there before Oklahoma. And I
- 24:22Speaker 8: walked off the field and I was so pumped. God,
- 24:24Speaker 8: we're ready to play and we look good. And he said,
- 24:27Speaker 8: better be really careful, son. He said, you might have
- 24:31Speaker 8: played the game today.
- 24:32Speaker 1: We got the hell beat out of us.
- 24:35Speaker 3: And I mean, we look flat. We stunk.
- 24:38Speaker 8: And even Thursday was okay. But you got to be
- 24:41Speaker 8: careful that you show up on time. I do think
- 24:45Speaker 8: that Steve, he's been a tremendous head coach in college.
- 24:49Speaker 8: He's got a lot of college experience. He's got some
- 24:51Speaker 8: pro experience. Ryan.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Same thing. He's got some pro experience.
- 24:56Speaker 8: I think right now with playoffs, games like this, you've
- 25:00Speaker 8: got to play every week. Everybody hates Texas. Everybody hates Texas.
- 25:05Speaker 8: It's everybody's rival. Everybody hates Ohio State. These two, Jim
- 25:10Speaker 8: Trestle and I stood on the field before the game
- 25:12Speaker 8: up there and said these jobs are just alike. It's
- 25:16Speaker 8: warmer here. Both in the capital. Both have tremendous support.
- 25:21Speaker 8: Both have states that are full of athletes, so you've
- 25:23Speaker 8: got to evaluate. You've got to develop. Both have, we
- 25:28Speaker 8: called it pride, but it's pressure. He said, if you
- 25:32Speaker 8: don't win by enough, they're mad.
- 25:34Speaker 3: If you don't win, they're real mad.
- 25:36Speaker 1: If you don't win twice, then once you're fired.
- 25:37Speaker 8: And he said, and that's a good thing to be
- 25:40Speaker 8: at schools like that that care so much. But I
- 25:44Speaker 8: do think all of that helps in these situations.
- 25:48Speaker 3: It'll be fun.
- 25:49Speaker 8: I remember we played Bill O'Brien at Boston College, and
- 25:51Speaker 8: I loved what he did offensively. And on Sunday, I
- 25:55Speaker 8: would go in and study what he did against us.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker 1: And said, you know what? That makes so much sense.
- 26:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 8: God, that's something we should be doing. And that'll be
- 26:05Speaker 8: fun Sunday with you to sit there and say, here's
- 26:08Speaker 8: what Patricia, here's what he thought. And here's how he
- 26:12Speaker 8: tried to cover Cam and Ryan.
- 26:14Speaker 3: And that's fun.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 8: That's what you do this stuff for is you're constantly
- 26:19Speaker 8: a learning machine. And that'll be, it's like checkers when
- 26:24Speaker 8: you're seeing him in the game. And then you see
- 26:26Speaker 8: what's Patricia going to do this year. He did different
- 26:28Speaker 8: than last year. Arch is further along this year. The
- 26:31Speaker 8: offense is further along. So what's he going to do differently?
- 26:35Speaker 8: That's so much fun. And Arthur, who knows what he's
- 26:38Speaker 8: going to do because he didn't do anything against Ball State.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 26:41Speaker 8: And then there's Muschamp who's new. There's Arthur who's new.
- 26:44Speaker 8: So that's going to be a, chess match. It's going
- 26:47Speaker 8: to be so cool. I can't wait to watch.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Arthur, of course, being Arthur Smith, the new offensive coordinator
- 26:53Speaker 1: and a former NFL head coaching coordinator. And of course,
- 26:56Speaker 1: Matt Patricia in his second season as the defensive coordinator
- 26:59Speaker 1: for Ohio State.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Coming up on Longhorn game day tomorrow, I'll take a
- 27:03Speaker 5: look at some of those Arthur Smith tendencies, how he's
- 27:05Speaker 5: talked about maybe using Jeremiah Smith and how things might
- 27:09Speaker 5: look a little different for Ohio State's offense this year.
- 27:11Speaker 6: There you go.
- 27:12Speaker 1: All right, we have Inconceivable coming up here on this
- 27:14Speaker 1: Friday on 1300 The Zone. It's college football roundtable.
- 27:16Speaker 6: Say goodnight to this one.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Touchdown, Texas.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Here are your hosts, Mike Hardball-Harch, Mark Henry, and Cameron Parker.
- 27:27Speaker 3: It is not Cameron Parker. It is our guy Eric
- 27:35Speaker 3: Henry of Horns247. com. He is in the house. I am
- 27:39Speaker 3: your host, Mike Harbaugh Harge, the world's strongest man. D.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Mark Henry is in the building. He will be on
- 27:46Speaker 3: air in just a moment. But we want you to
- 27:49Speaker 3: make sure that you get over to Covert Ford of Austin,
- 27:54Speaker 3: 11514 Research Boulevard. to come and hang out. We're going
- 28:00Speaker 3: to give you an opportunity to win a pair of
- 28:01Speaker 3: tickets to the hottest ticket in town. Everybody wants to
- 28:06Speaker 3: be in attendance for this game this weekend. The city's
- 28:12Speaker 3: on fire, literally, because of the fact that everybody wants
- 28:15Speaker 3: to be at this game. But before we get into
- 28:18Speaker 3: the talk of this game, as we mentioned, we are
- 28:21Speaker 3: here at Covert Ford of Austin. But the thing that
- 28:26Speaker 3: I really want to get into is, We always talk
- 28:28Speaker 3: about vehicles. You want to be able to drive a
- 28:31Speaker 3: car that's reliable. And obviously, this young man that I'm
- 28:37Speaker 3: about to introduce you to is the person who understands
- 28:42Speaker 3: what it takes to take care of your vehicle. His
- 28:46Speaker 3: name is Rick Fogle. He purchased a 1995 Ford F-250
- 28:54Speaker 3: XL from Cover Ford right here on Research in 1995.
- 29:00Speaker 3: You know when you go and buy a car and
- 29:03Speaker 3: it said it's only had one owner? He is literally...
- 29:07Speaker 3: The only person who has owned this vehicle, and he's
- 29:11Speaker 3: owned it so long that he's got over 377,000 miles
- 29:18Speaker 3: on the car. They always tell you about being Ford tough.
- 29:23Speaker 3: He is the true example of what it means to
- 29:25Speaker 3: being Ford tough. So thank you, Rick, for joining the
- 29:28Speaker 3: show today. And I really want to understand this. Like,
- 29:32Speaker 3: when you bought the vehicle, how many miles was on it?
- 29:37Speaker 3: Well that's a good question that I cannot answer.
- 29:39Speaker 2: What?
- 29:41Speaker 3: Because it didn't have very many. There it is. Maybe
- 29:43Speaker 3: less than 20.
- 29:45Speaker 10: Wow.
- 29:46Speaker 8: Wow.
- 29:47Speaker 7: Now, that was January of 1995. That was the last
- 29:52Speaker 7: time I was here at Colbert Ford.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Until today.
- 29:56Speaker 7: Until today, and it's 31 years later. So I was
- 30:00Speaker 7: 42 years old when I rolled in. I had a
- 30:02Speaker 7: 93 F100, or 150, half-ton pickup.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Yep.
- 30:07Speaker 7: Had a six-cylinder, and I felt it was just a
- 30:09Speaker 7: little underpowered, and I wanted something a little bigger. So
- 30:12Speaker 7: I was talking to a salesman, and he said, well,
- 30:15Speaker 7: we've got this truck over here. It's a three-quarter ton XL,
- 30:18Speaker 7: and it's got a 5.8. And I said, it sounds like,
- 30:21Speaker 7: I said, all I need is a big motor.
- 30:23Speaker 6: That's power right there.
- 30:25Speaker 3: All I need is a big motor and air conditioning.
- 30:28Speaker 3: and a radio. Right.
- 30:30Speaker 6: And it had all that.
- 30:31Speaker 3: So I said, okay, I'll buy it. I think it's
- 30:33Speaker 3: stickered for $ 19, 100.
- 30:34Speaker 7: That was going.
- 30:36Speaker 3: To be my next question. So I'm glad you asked that.
- 30:38Speaker 3: I answered that because you start looking around and you're
- 30:41Speaker 3: seeing how the prices have changed and all the vehicles
- 30:44Speaker 3: have changed, but you've been steady the entire time. What
- 30:47Speaker 3: is the key for someone to keep a vehicle like
- 30:51Speaker 3: this for that very long and And continue to roll it.
- 30:54Speaker 3: You told me today, what, you drove over 100 miles
- 30:56Speaker 3: today to get here? Yeah, it was 110 miles.
- 30:58Speaker 7: I live in Mason County, which is a little county
- 31:01Speaker 7: west of here. And it's so sparsely populated out there
- 31:06Speaker 7: that we don't have a single stoplight in the entire county.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Wow. And that's where we live.
- 31:11Speaker 7: We have a little place north of Fredericksburg, 10 acres, and.
- 31:15Speaker 3: We've got a house and got a horse and a...
- 31:19Speaker 3: some chickens, and three little cows.
- 31:21Speaker 7: And that's where we live. And I make that commute
- 31:25Speaker 7: into Fredericksburg five days a week. It's about 25 miles
- 31:28Speaker 7: one way. And then I drive around quite a bit
- 31:31Speaker 7: in town. I drive that truck five days a week.
- 31:34Speaker 7: And on the weekend, I've got my toy truck. And
- 31:36Speaker 7: I won't say what brand it is, but I drive
- 31:38Speaker 7: it on the weekends.
- 31:40Speaker 11: Did you do all your service here? So you would
- 31:43Speaker 11: come in here and just.
- 31:43Speaker 3: One time.
- 31:45Speaker 11: One time.
- 31:45Speaker 3: He hadn't been in here. No, this is the first...
- 31:49Speaker 3: When I.
- 31:49Speaker 7: First came here in 95, I just turned 42 years old.
- 31:54Speaker 3: I was in my prime.
- 31:55Speaker 6: I was feeling pretty good.
- 31:56Speaker 7: That truck was flat and it was really pretty and
- 31:59Speaker 7: didn't have anything on it special.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So I said, you know, I like that truck.
- 32:03Speaker 7: And now, 31 years later, a couple of months from now,
- 32:07Speaker 7: I'm going to be.
- 32:08Speaker 3: 74 years old.
- 32:09Speaker 10: Wow.
- 32:10Speaker 6: That's amazing.
- 32:11Speaker 3: You sit there and you look at it and you
- 32:12Speaker 3: said you've had it for 31 years. I was talking
- 32:15Speaker 3: to your brother. You're one of 11. in your family,
- 32:19Speaker 3: and how many times have they asked you to drive
- 32:22Speaker 3: your truck?
- 32:24Speaker 6: Well, not, never.
- 32:25Speaker 11: I think they already knew the answer.
- 32:30Speaker 3: He knew the answer.
- 32:31Speaker 7: Let's see, my wife drove it maybe a total of
- 32:36Speaker 7: 75 miles in 31 years. I did teach my grandson
- 32:41Speaker 7: how to drive in that truck when he was 10
- 32:44Speaker 7: years old. We went on the little dirt roads there
- 32:46Speaker 7: in Mason County, and we'd go on the back roads,
- 32:49Speaker 7: and the only thing I really had to say to
- 32:50Speaker 7: him all the time.
- 32:51Speaker 3: We're driving is, Cayman, slow down a little bit.
- 32:53Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 32:55Speaker 3: He got a heavy foot because nowadays in these vehicles,
- 32:58Speaker 3: there's a little bit different. It's a different kind of
- 33:00Speaker 3: push when you get ready to drive a little bit.
- 33:02Speaker 12: Yes, it is.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I do want to ask you this, too, because you
- 33:04Speaker 3: mentioned it. You taught your grandson how to drive. How
- 33:08Speaker 3: old were you when you learned how to drive, and
- 33:09Speaker 3: what type of vehicle was that that you were driving?
- 33:11Speaker 6: Wow, good question. Well, is this.
- 33:16Speaker 14: Uh legal driver okay legal see i'm we were farmers
- 33:21Speaker 14: we come from a farming background and uh my dad
- 33:24Speaker 14: was an only child son and he said you know
- 33:28Speaker 14: when i when i get.
- 33:29Speaker 7: Married and have kids i'm gonna have a lot of
- 33:30Speaker 7: kids so he had eight boys and three girls and
- 33:33Speaker 7: so he had a lot of farm farm labor right
- 33:35Speaker 7: there so i learned to drive a truck when i
- 33:37Speaker 7: was 10 years old i can't tell you what it
- 33:39Speaker 7: was but I did, when I took my license, when
- 33:43Speaker 7: I was 16, it was a 1968 Ford 100.
- 33:46Speaker 3: There it is. And that's where I learned.
- 33:50Speaker 7: The only trouble with that truck was it didn't make
- 33:52Speaker 7: a good car date truck.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Didn't have no back seat?
- 33:56Speaker 15: No.
- 33:57Speaker 14: You're talking about the back seat.
- 34:03Speaker 3: With lap belts. Yeah, they had to make sure.
- 34:06Speaker 6: They had the lap belts back then. They didn't have
- 34:08Speaker 6: the shoulder belt.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 34:11Speaker 6: That's amazing.
- 34:11Speaker 3: I'm so excited to hear about that, especially, you know,
- 34:14Speaker 3: we're here at Cobra Ford, Austin. This is where you
- 34:17Speaker 3: bought your first vehicle, well, your vehicle of $ 377, 000. thousand
- 34:24Speaker 3: miles right there well that is definitely a commitment you're
- 34:27Speaker 3: a ford driver you understand what it's about you've had
- 34:30Speaker 3: your mustang for quite some time as well i mean
- 34:33Speaker 3: you drove from florida how many miles have you put
- 34:35Speaker 3: on that thing you know i was gonna ask.
- 34:36Speaker 4: You what's the furthest you've driven your truck because i've
- 34:39Speaker 4: taken my mustang which i parked on the other side
- 34:41Speaker 4: of the property here i've taken to florida and i'm
- 34:44Speaker 4: like all right you know it's still holding pretty well
- 34:46Speaker 4: but it's it's a newer car what's the furthest you've
- 34:48Speaker 4: driven that truck Austin, Texas.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Come from Basie County, right? Maybe Dallas? Alpha, 110 miles.
- 34:59Speaker 3: You got something for him, Mark? Because you understand what
- 35:02Speaker 3: it's like to have a vehicle and put some miles
- 35:04Speaker 3: on it. Listen, I have drove a million miles in
- 35:08Speaker 3: my life between rental cars and my own cars.
- 35:12Speaker 5: And.
- 35:13Speaker 11: I love driving, and there's nothing better than the smell
- 35:17Speaker 11: of a new car. When you sit down, and we
- 35:21Speaker 11: perused the parking lot and all of these beautiful trucks
- 35:24Speaker 11: out here, and you sit down in them, and it
- 35:27Speaker 11: smelled like crayons out the box. I get a little
- 35:32Speaker 11: emotional when I start talking about my car.
- 35:35Speaker 3: It's the crayons out the box? Yeah, them big ones, though.
- 35:39Speaker 6: Like the big ones?
- 35:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I love it. I love it. Well, we're
- 35:43Speaker 3: thankful that you are still able to drive that. You
- 35:46Speaker 3: are a testimonial for Ford being built Ford tough. Yes, sir.
- 35:51Speaker 3: And the folks here at Cobra Ford of Austin right
- 35:53Speaker 3: here on 183. All I can say is, wow, and
- 35:57Speaker 3: continue to keep the maintenance because I saw your laundry
- 36:00Speaker 3: list of things that need to be done. And I
- 36:02Speaker 3: tell you, they need to make sure that they do
- 36:05Speaker 3: everything to preserve that vehicle for you. You should get
- 36:07Speaker 3: all your maintenance for free. You can tell them I
- 36:09Speaker 3: said that.
- 36:11Speaker 14: From your mouth to God's ears.
- 36:14Speaker 3: That's awesome. Well, we want to thank you for joining
- 36:16Speaker 3: us today. Be safe driving back. The only problem that
- 36:19Speaker 3: I have really is you got a TCU shirt on today.
- 36:22Speaker 3: And it's a big Friday up here, but represent your
- 36:25Speaker 3: school the way you want to.
- 36:27Speaker 7: Well, my granddaughter went to TCU, but my brother right
- 36:31Speaker 7: over there, he went to UT.
- 36:33Speaker 11: All right.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Well, he's winning. He's winning. He's winning. And so is
- 36:36Speaker 3: UT this week. We got it covered. Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 36:40Speaker 3: His name is Rick Fogle. He has been driving this
- 36:43Speaker 3: truck 377,000 plus miles. and he purchased it right here
- 36:49Speaker 3: where we are today at Covert Ford of Austin. When
- 36:53Speaker 3: we come back, we're going to continue the conversations. We're
- 36:56Speaker 3: going to get after it.
- 36:57Speaker 11: Texas has a big game this weekend.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Did y'all hear about that? We'll talk about it right
- 37:01Speaker 3: here on AM 1300 The Zone, live from Covert Ford
- 37:05Speaker 3: of Austin, right here off of 183. Get over here,
- 37:08Speaker 3: sign up for tickets, get some Rudy's barbecue. We got
- 37:11Speaker 3: some of that. You better hurry. Mark is here, so
- 37:13Speaker 3: he might eat it all. It's going to be gone.
- 37:16Speaker 3: We'll be right back.
- 37:26Speaker 6: You heard where we are.
- 37:27Speaker 3: Make sure you come out here. Come buy a vehicle.
- 37:29Speaker 3: They've been waiting out here. I see all the salespeople.
- 37:31Speaker 3: They're running around. They're trying to get busy. Yeah. They
- 37:35Speaker 3: are ready to sell some vehicles, and this is the
- 37:38Speaker 3: place to be. 183 Research Boulevard, right by Rudy's. Oh,
- 37:44Speaker 3: did I mention Rudy's? They got some food out here, too,
- 37:47Speaker 3: but you better hurry up. Mark is hungry, and you
- 37:49Speaker 3: know he's going to eat. I am eyeballing this box
- 37:53Speaker 3: right now.
- 37:53Speaker 6: That's right.
- 37:54Speaker 3: So we got my man Eric Henry of Horns 247.
- 37:57Speaker 3: You can hear him every Thursday with us at 734,
- 38:01Speaker 3: breaking it down. But he's also part of our college
- 38:04Speaker 3: game day. He's going to come down to Bevo Boulevard.
- 38:07Speaker 3: We will start tomorrow at 330. All the action. It
- 38:11Speaker 3: is busy, busy, busy. And you just heard the world's
- 38:14Speaker 3: strongest man in WWE Hall of Famer, our guy, Mark Henry.
- 38:18Speaker 3: You can listen to Mark and I Monday through Friday,
- 38:22Speaker 3: 6 to 9 a.m. on AM 1300 The Zone and
- 38:26Speaker 3: always free on the iHeartRadio app. Make sure you come
- 38:29Speaker 3: down here and get a chance to win a pair
- 38:31Speaker 3: of tickets to the game tomorrow. And, of course, you
- 38:34Speaker 3: get a chance to win some Thomas Rhett tickets as well.
- 38:37Speaker 3: So it's going to be a busy time tomorrow. But
- 38:39Speaker 3: let's get into it, man. This is the matchup of
- 38:43Speaker 3: the early part of the season. We thought that, obviously,
- 38:46Speaker 3: being Texas Longhorn fans and being the flagship station for
- 38:49Speaker 3: the University of Texas, this is priority number one. You
- 38:52Speaker 3: think about the Oklahoma and Michigan game, that'll be priority
- 38:56Speaker 3: number two. But all eyes are in Austin, Texas, this weekend.
- 39:01Speaker 3: And E... You were at the presser yesterday. Well, you
- 39:03Speaker 3: were on the Zoom with everybody yesterday. You've heard Coach
- 39:06Speaker 3: Sark talk about this. This is a big week for
- 39:08Speaker 3: Coach Steve Sarkeesian. No doubt about it.
- 39:10Speaker 4: You know, when you look at Steve Sarkeesian throughout his career,
- 39:13Speaker 4: he's someone who you go back to his time at Washington, right?
- 39:16Speaker 4: Had the nickname Seven Wind Sark. He's, you know, earned
- 39:19Speaker 4: that dubious distinction of Seven Wind Sark because his teams
- 39:22Speaker 4: routinely went seven and six, seven and five, right? We
- 39:25Speaker 4: also know USC short set. We know what happened there.
- 39:27Speaker 4: He gets the opportunity here at Texas. His career has
- 39:30Speaker 4: taken off really over the last three and a half
- 39:32Speaker 4: years as far as being that guy who, you know,
- 39:35Speaker 4: when he would graduate from the Pete Carroll coaching tree.
- 39:37Speaker 3: You thought he would be.
- 39:38Speaker 4: But the one knock against him, Mark and Harge, is this.
- 39:42Speaker 4: If you look at Steve Sarkeesian's tenure at Texas, he
- 39:44Speaker 4: has a record against the AP top 25 of 16 wins,
- 39:46Speaker 4: 14 losses. However, When you flesh that out and you
- 39:50Speaker 4: say AP top 10, right? Because Texas should beat up
- 39:53Speaker 4: on the number 20, number 22 teams. You flesh out
- 39:56Speaker 4: to AP top 10, four and nine, five of those losses,
- 40:00Speaker 4: three to Georgia, two to Ohio State. This is an
- 40:04Speaker 4: opportunity for Steve Sarkeesian to get that proverbial monkey off
- 40:06Speaker 4: his back.
- 40:07Speaker 6: Get that get back.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Get that get back and not, Mark, build into a
- 40:10Speaker 4: narrative of, oh, Steve Sarkeesian has a Ryan Day and
- 40:13Speaker 4: a Kirby Smart problem.
- 40:15Speaker 11: Well, I mean, it's true. Like he has a Ryan
- 40:19Speaker 11: Day and a Kirby Smart problem. And the only way
- 40:22Speaker 11: to do it is to exercise the demons. And those
- 40:26Speaker 11: demons will get done tomorrow. I can promise you that.
- 40:31Speaker 11: This team has got so much talent on it. And
- 40:34Speaker 11: I heard a comment that somebody made that said, this
- 40:37Speaker 11: team looks like the Alabama and Georgia teams when they
- 40:42Speaker 11: were going back to back.
- 40:44Speaker 6: So when you get a team that looks like it
- 40:47Speaker 6: when they.
- 40:47Speaker 11: Get off the bus and then they get in the
- 40:49Speaker 11: stadiums and they perform like it, then you end up
- 40:53Speaker 11: with a legacy like Steve Sark, I feel like, deserves.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Well, the one thing that I continue, and both of
- 40:59Speaker 3: those are great points, but you sit here and you
- 41:02Speaker 3: look at this game. Most of those games that he's
- 41:05Speaker 3: been able to play in haven't been at home. Most
- 41:08Speaker 3: of those games have been on the road. Yeah, Alabama
- 41:10Speaker 3: was on the road.
- 41:11Speaker 6: They should have beat.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Alabama with that. Phantom Call in the end zone with
- 41:15Speaker 3: Tavondre Sweat bringing down Bryce Young. That could have been
- 41:19Speaker 3: a different one. But then you go and slay the
- 41:21Speaker 3: Dragon in Tuscaloosa. That's a big one for them. You
- 41:25Speaker 3: go up last year, and regardless, they lost. I get it.
- 41:28Speaker 3: But you go and look at the numbers. Overall, he
- 41:31Speaker 3: had one. They played well. They just didn't finish in
- 41:34Speaker 3: the red zone. And that's the other part of this
- 41:37Speaker 3: equation is– What is he going to do when things
- 41:41Speaker 3: get tight? Not tight as in, oh my gosh, they're
- 41:45Speaker 3: at the end of the game. No, what is he
- 41:47Speaker 3: going to do in that tight area where the spacing
- 41:50Speaker 3: is different, the moments are different? How is he going
- 41:53Speaker 3: to get over that hump about, remember, everybody's always talking
- 41:57Speaker 3: about he needs a play caller. He needs to get
- 41:58Speaker 3: an offensive coordinator in that room. Well, go out there
- 42:02Speaker 3: and make the right calls and have the playmakers to
- 42:05Speaker 3: make those plays may change the narrative on him in
- 42:08Speaker 3: that situation.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Yeah, listen, I'll take the baton from you right there.
- 42:11Speaker 4: You talk about having the playmakers, right? I said this
- 42:13Speaker 4: on the show with you guys yesterday in the morning.
- 42:15Speaker 4: I think having Cam Coleman as that number one receiver,
- 42:18Speaker 4: this is no disrespect to Ryan Wingo, but when you
- 42:20Speaker 4: have two more or less bona fide number ones, right,
- 42:23Speaker 4: out there, it gives the defense something else to account
- 42:26Speaker 4: for so they can't just.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Pack the box. Now, listen, the play, you know, you
- 42:31Speaker 6: go back to the Red.
- 42:31Speaker 4: River shootout 2023, four tries from the one-yard line.
- 42:34Speaker 3: That was a failure.
- 42:35Speaker 4: The Ohio State game in the Cotton Bowl, That was
- 42:38Speaker 4: a play that was a busted play, right? But the
- 42:41Speaker 4: point I'm getting at where I land is this. I
- 42:43Speaker 4: think you have more options as a play caller when
- 42:45Speaker 4: you're not just saying, hey, we're going to turn around
- 42:47Speaker 4: and pound it, you know, to your running back and
- 42:49Speaker 4: try to get them that one yard or two yards.
- 42:51Speaker 4: When you want to go to Cam Coleman and say, hey,
- 42:53Speaker 4: like Mark, we saw it against Texas State. Hollywood Smothers
- 42:56Speaker 4: takes it down to the six yard line. Boom, you
- 42:58Speaker 4: go to Cam Coleman, you have something to account for.
- 42:59Speaker 4: I'm not saying Texas State is Ohio State. I'm just
- 43:01Speaker 4: saying conceptually, you can do those things.
- 43:03Speaker 11: Well, I'm thinking that it's 10 against 11. Because Cam
- 43:07Speaker 11: Coleman is going to draw two people. And then you
- 43:10Speaker 11: got to take advantage of that. And sometimes it's the
- 43:13Speaker 11: running game. But you have Ryan Wingo. And I think
- 43:19Speaker 11: that Ryan is a guy that's crafty enough. And he's
- 43:24Speaker 11: bigger than he was last year. I didn't recognize him.
- 43:27Speaker 11: Hart sent me a picture.
- 43:30Speaker 3: And I said, who is that?
- 43:31Speaker 6: He said, man, that's Ryan Wingo. I said, no, it's not.
- 43:34Speaker 6: And he said, yes, it is.
- 43:36Speaker 11: That dude has gained like 10 pounds, and he grew
- 43:39Speaker 11: an inch. So, like, he's still a kid. By the
- 43:43Speaker 11: time this season is over, I think that Ryan Wingo
- 43:47Speaker 11: will establish himself as one of the top five wide
- 43:50Speaker 11: receivers in the country, and everybody's going to be like
- 43:54Speaker 11: me in the mornings when I do the world's strongest take.
- 43:56Speaker 6: Back then, they didn't want me.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Now I'm hot.
- 43:59Speaker 6: They all want me.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Well, the thing about it is, too, people may have
- 44:04Speaker 3: sounded like they forgot about it, But if you listen
- 44:07Speaker 3: to Sark, Sark hadn't forgot about it. He makes sure
- 44:09Speaker 3: that everybody understands that Ryan Wingo was a second-team All-SEC performer,
- 44:15Speaker 3: even with the drops that he had last year. Think
- 44:18Speaker 3: about the numbers that he could have put up if
- 44:20Speaker 3: he didn't have those. But I think for me, the
- 44:23Speaker 3: moment of truth will be that first time in the
- 44:27Speaker 3: red zone to try to see what Sark's going to
- 44:29Speaker 3: be able to do. Is he going to be able
- 44:31Speaker 3: to punch it in? Do they execute the play properly?
- 44:33Speaker 3: Because that is another part of it as well. Some
- 44:36Speaker 3: of these guys missing a block, not doing the things
- 44:39Speaker 3: that they need to do, pushing through. certain things, you've
- 44:42Speaker 3: got to find a way to get it done. And
- 44:45Speaker 3: those big uglies, those seniors and those not seniors, because
- 44:49Speaker 3: I don't even know if anybody is a senior anymore.
- 44:51Speaker 3: There's guys that have been on campus for more than
- 44:54Speaker 3: four years. Now you've got to try to find out
- 44:57Speaker 3: how I'm going to get things done and make things happen.
- 45:00Speaker 6: Question for you.
- 45:02Speaker 11: How does Texas score first? Pass and end zone or
- 45:08Speaker 11: pass and run or do they run the ball in?
- 45:12Speaker 4: Well, OK, you got a lot of options. I'm going
- 45:15Speaker 4: to answer the question and say I believe it'll be
- 45:17Speaker 4: a run. However, let's not forget this. Texas in some
- 45:22Speaker 4: of these games against Georgia, against Ohio State, they failed
- 45:25Speaker 4: to score early. So you say, how do they score first?
- 45:29Speaker 4: Let's hope that they score early.
- 45:30Speaker 3: No matter.
- 45:31Speaker 4: And I'm going with a run. I'm just saying I
- 45:33Speaker 4: don't think this can be a game. Now, Texas defense
- 45:36Speaker 4: is certainly, I think, equipped to handle what may be
- 45:38Speaker 4: thrown at them. But this is not a game where
- 45:39Speaker 4: I think you want to find your footing. This can't
- 45:41Speaker 4: be Georgia at home 2024. We remember where you end
- 45:45Speaker 4: up down 23-0 at halftime, and your defense is giving
- 45:48Speaker 4: the offense chances, but the offense couldn't find its footing.
- 45:51Speaker 4: It can't be that type of game.
- 45:52Speaker 3: Well, what I'm thinking is, and this is kind of
- 45:54Speaker 3: going back to what Arch has talked about, what Coach
- 45:57Speaker 3: Shark has talked about, this team's got to start fast.
- 46:00Speaker 3: They have to come out and be aggressive and make
- 46:03Speaker 3: things happen. I always tell my son, my son's always
- 46:06Speaker 3: talking about this. My son DJ plays basketball. He always
- 46:08Speaker 3: talks about, I'm just trying to see how they're going
- 46:10Speaker 3: to play me.
- 46:11Speaker 6: Fill them out.
- 46:12Speaker 3: No, there's no filling out. Yeah, you're the one that
- 46:15Speaker 3: dictates what's going to happen. You set the tone in
- 46:17Speaker 3: this ballgame, and that's what I think Texas is going
- 46:20Speaker 3: to do. I thought last week they should have taken
- 46:22Speaker 3: the ball first. They won the toss. I said, take
- 46:25Speaker 3: the ball, go score, and then put them behind the number.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Now this is a different type. Let's see what happens.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Y'all can defer to the second half. But if they
- 46:35Speaker 3: win the toss... You have no choice. Go down and
- 46:38Speaker 3: score first. And to answer your question, I see Texas
- 46:41Speaker 3: kicking a field goal first to get in there because
- 46:43Speaker 3: you've got to take those points. No matter where they are,
- 46:46Speaker 3: you have to take points in this ballgame. It's a
- 46:49Speaker 3: one-and-a-half-point game. No doubt. It's a one-and-a-half-point game, so you
- 46:52Speaker 3: want to make sure that you're ahead, and then you're
- 46:54Speaker 3: going to see what Will Muschamp's team is going to
- 46:56Speaker 3: be able to do.
- 46:58Speaker 11: Well, these guys had trouble stopping the run, and they
- 47:01Speaker 11: played ball state. So Texas should be able to do
- 47:06Speaker 11: what Steve Sarkeesian said, is run the ball because they
- 47:11Speaker 11: have practiced 10 and 16 play drives, all runs, just
- 47:18Speaker 11: to get acclimated. And I also think we underestimate, everybody's
- 47:24Speaker 11: out here with the fans and we got coolant. These guys,
- 47:27Speaker 11: they've been in Ohio, it's been 81 degrees. They're going
- 47:31Speaker 11: to come here, and they're going to feel what 100
- 47:34Speaker 11: degrees feels like, and then 140 or 150 on the field.
- 47:40Speaker 11: It's just like going to Denver. That high altitude plays
- 47:47Speaker 11: a part, and this heat is.
- 47:49Speaker 6: Going to play a part.
- 47:50Speaker 3: Harge, I'll offer a quick nugget on that.
- 47:51Speaker 4: I know you guys are trying to talk to our
- 47:52Speaker 4: guy Pat Murphy over at Buck Nuts, but one of
- 47:54Speaker 4: the things he offered us is that what Ohio State's
- 47:56Speaker 4: trying to do to prepare for.
- 47:58Speaker 2: The heat, and again, you can't really prepare for this heat, right?
- 48:00Speaker 3: Right, right, right.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Those who may know, Mark, I'm sure you know this.
- 48:03Speaker 4: They're practicing in sweaters. Well, I'm sure you know this.
- 48:07Speaker 4: Ohio State's a big-time wrestling school, right? And what they
- 48:10Speaker 4: do is they actually join the wrestlers in the sauna. Now,
- 48:14Speaker 4: they didn't say whether they're out there practicing in the sauna,
- 48:17Speaker 4: but they're trying to do all types of things. One
- 48:19Speaker 4: of our guys told us that when you went inside
- 48:22Speaker 4: their practice bubble, the heat was on. instead of, you know,
- 48:25Speaker 4: just a regular A.C. So they're trying to do things.
- 48:27Speaker 4: But to your point, Mark, and I agree, I'm a Floridian.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And you knew how hot it was.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Nothing prepares you for Texas heat.
- 48:36Speaker 3: So you can do whatever you want. It's not going
- 48:38Speaker 3: to help you. Well, I do, when we come back,
- 48:40Speaker 3: I do want to push back on what Mark said
- 48:41Speaker 3: about that running game and what they were able to
- 48:45Speaker 3: do versus Ball State and all that other stuff. Because
- 48:48Speaker 3: Let's not forget, Texas State ran the ball well against
- 48:51Speaker 3: Texas last week, too. So that would be the same
- 48:54Speaker 3: conversation that they are having. We're rolling right here on
- 48:58Speaker 3: 183 at Cobra Ford of Austin. Come up here, get
- 49:02Speaker 3: you some Rudy's, get you something to eat and enjoy yourself.
- 49:06Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 49:06Speaker 3: By the way, there's a ball game that is happening
- 49:09Speaker 3: at DKR tomorrow. So there's a ticket giveaway.
- 49:13Speaker 8: Oh.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Yeah, come on down and hang out as we will
- 49:16Speaker 3: be here until five o'clock but coming up next we're
- 49:19Speaker 3: going to continue the conversations i want to get eric's
- 49:21Speaker 3: thoughts and mark's thoughts on the wide receiver position because
- 49:25Speaker 3: they will be a factor right here on What are
- 49:29Speaker 3: we calling this? Party at Covert?
- 49:32Speaker 6: Let's do that.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Covert Austin right here on 183. Don't go anywhere.
- 49:43Speaker 6: Ooh, that's funky.
- 49:45Speaker 3: We are really, really live, folks. I'm talking about live, live.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You got to get over here to Covert Ford of Austin,
- 49:52Speaker 3: right here off of 183. They close at 8 o'clock.
- 49:55Speaker 3: We'll be here till 5. Come and get you a
- 49:58Speaker 3: new vehicle, but most importantly, get a chance to win
- 50:01Speaker 3: a pair of tickets to UT versus Ohio State tomorrow night, DKR,
- 50:08Speaker 3: Texas Memorial Stadium. That game kicks off at 6.30. We
- 50:12Speaker 3: will be at Bevo Boulevard tomorrow starting at 3.30 with
- 50:18Speaker 3: Longhorns game day. We'll have myself, Mark Henry, Eric Henry
- 50:23Speaker 3: of Horns 247.
- 50:25Speaker 6: And, of course, we'll have our guy.
- 50:26Speaker 3: Jake Herman as well leading you up to network with
- 50:30Speaker 3: Craig Way, Roger Wallace, and Will Matthews, and they will
- 50:34Speaker 3: bring you the game. All eyes are on you. The
- 50:38Speaker 3: city of Austin, ESPN is here getting ready for game day.
- 50:42Speaker 3: The city is buzzing downtown. Celebrity on top of celebrity
- 50:47Speaker 3: that's out here. It is going to be a movie.
- 50:51Speaker 3: But when we went to break, we were talking about
- 50:53Speaker 3: the fact that this matchup has got stars everywhere. The
- 50:58Speaker 3: star potential is evident. When you look at the skill
- 51:01Speaker 3: position players, you have guys that we all expect to
- 51:06Speaker 3: be in the first round second round there will be
- 51:08Speaker 3: over 20 guys that are playing on this field drafted
- 51:12Speaker 3: next year and a year after that because it's going
- 51:14Speaker 3: to continue to happen if they all decide to come
- 51:16Speaker 3: out because there's still that part of it but the
- 51:19Speaker 3: wide receiver positions are led by camp coleman gets all
- 51:23Speaker 3: the highlights for the university of texas as we mentioned
- 51:26Speaker 3: coach shark says don't forget about ryan wingo he's a
- 51:30Speaker 3: all sec performer but when you go to ohio state
- 51:34Speaker 3: jeremiah smith is the one that everybody's talking about. But
- 51:37Speaker 3: I was talking to a buddy earlier today, and you
- 51:39Speaker 3: start to think about Ole Miss State. They can be
- 51:43Speaker 3: recognized as wide receiver Ute. LSU has their claim to fame,
- 51:49Speaker 3: and you look at the money there. But look at
- 51:51Speaker 3: the money in the NFL that has come out of
- 51:53Speaker 3: Ohio State at the wide receiver position. It's going to
- 51:57Speaker 3: continue to get better, as we mentioned. There's going to
- 51:59Speaker 3: be some guys drafted. Jeremiah Smith is somebody that people
- 52:02Speaker 3: might even have him as the number one overall pick,
- 52:04Speaker 3: at least the most talented player. But this is going
- 52:07Speaker 3: to be a game where maybe the stars aren't it.
- 52:11Speaker 3: We know about Emmitt Mosley. We know about Ryan Wingo.
- 52:15Speaker 3: But who are some of the guys that you know, Eric,
- 52:17Speaker 3: from Ohio State that the folks might need to pay
- 52:20Speaker 3: attention to not name Jeremiah Smith?
- 52:23Speaker 4: Yeah, Harge, to your point, right, you talk about Jeremiah
- 52:25Speaker 4: Smith and him being a star, but the stars might
- 52:27Speaker 4: not be the focal point as far as who decides
- 52:29Speaker 4: this game. Jeremiah Smith in two meetings against Texas has
- 52:33Speaker 4: seven receptions. for 46 yards, no touchdowns, not exactly eye-popping numbers.
- 52:38Speaker 4: But part of the reason Ohio State is 2-0 in
- 52:40Speaker 4: these meetings is Cardinal Tate, Emeka Egbuka, of course, Tambay Buccaneer.
- 52:45Speaker 3: You got to throw that in there. I got to
- 52:47Speaker 3: throw that in there. But those guys made plays.
- 52:51Speaker 4: And, Mark, to Harge's point, as far as Ohio State
- 52:53Speaker 4: possibly being wide receiver, you They've continued recruiting well. They
- 52:56Speaker 4: actually got a kid out of the Lone Star State
- 52:58Speaker 4: who was at UTSA, Devin McCune.
- 53:01Speaker 3: That's their wide receiver, too, right now. He's a bigger-bodied guy.
- 53:04Speaker 4: Someone who actually played against Texas at DKR two years
- 53:07Speaker 4: ago had five receptions for 30-something yards. Again, that was
- 53:10Speaker 4: a UTSA team, certainly Ohio State. But the other name
- 53:13Speaker 4: you need to know, you may remember the late Chris Henry,
- 53:15Speaker 4: wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals. who tragically passed away.
- 53:19Speaker 4: His son, Chris Henry Jr., reclassified, is a five-star recruit.
- 53:23Speaker 4: He is probably going to be that third guy. He's
- 53:25Speaker 4: kind of, you know, for Ohio State, he's their version
- 53:28Speaker 4: of Jermaine Bishop. Had a really rough debut against Ball State.
- 53:32Speaker 4: Dropped a couple passes, one went for interception. But you
- 53:34Speaker 4: know that he's going to be ready to bounce back.
- 53:36Speaker 4: Those are guys who I think if... It's going to
- 53:39Speaker 4: be hard to contain Jeremiah Smith for a third straight time.
- 53:41Speaker 4: But if Texas is able to do so, it means
- 53:43Speaker 4: one of those other two guys probably is going to
- 53:45Speaker 4: get their targets.
- 53:46Speaker 6: Let me introduce you to K. Phillips and Littleton.
- 53:51Speaker 11: The second and third guys, they're going to be busy.
- 53:56Speaker 3: You hear me?
- 53:57Speaker 11: Will Muschamp is going to have these defensive backs ready
- 54:01Speaker 11: for those guys. And I know I'm sitting here drinking
- 54:04Speaker 11: a Kool-Aid, but I'm just saying. These wide receivers have
- 54:09Speaker 11: got to prove it, and they haven't.
- 54:12Speaker 6: Emeka Ibuka is not here. He not playing.
- 54:15Speaker 11: Jackson Smith and Jigma, he already played this week. So
- 54:20Speaker 11: those guys are going to have to go out there
- 54:22Speaker 11: and prove it to me. And I don't even think
- 54:25Speaker 11: that that's going to be the biggest problem. I think
- 54:28Speaker 11: that Bo Jackson is the guy that needs to really
- 54:33Speaker 11: be watched because he's already proved it. You know, he's
- 54:39Speaker 11: had like three 25-yard plays, and that's three too many
- 54:46Speaker 11: I don't want to see another one.
- 54:48Speaker 3: Yeah, but when we're looking at these wide receivers and
- 54:51Speaker 3: what they can bring, they got to be able to
- 54:53Speaker 3: have other guys that are going to be there. And
- 54:55Speaker 3: I'm glad you brought up Chris Henry Jr. because of
- 54:57Speaker 3: the fact that he is someone that the upside is there.
- 55:01Speaker 3: You talked about a five-star wide receiver. He is somebody
- 55:05Speaker 3: that Pac-Man Jones is his leader and his guardian. So
- 55:11Speaker 3: he is somebody that has been taking care of him
- 55:14Speaker 3: so he's gonna he's probably already been in his head
- 55:16Speaker 3: working with him talking about you gotta let that go
- 55:19Speaker 3: first game jitters whatever it may be so he has
- 55:21Speaker 3: something to prove but then you look on the texas
- 55:24Speaker 3: side of the football and you look at some of
- 55:26Speaker 3: those guys like a emmett mosley a guy that i
- 55:29Speaker 3: still believe we haven't seen the best of him yet
- 55:32Speaker 3: just because of some of the other things that they
- 55:35Speaker 3: try to do i think he's he's he's poised for
- 55:38Speaker 3: a breakout game You mentioned Jermaine Bishop Jr. I know
- 55:42Speaker 3: they tried to get him acclimated real quick. Arch thought
- 55:45Speaker 3: he was Nolan Ryan on that first pass to him
- 55:47Speaker 3: and just almost busted his chest wide open. And everybody's like,
- 55:51Speaker 3: oh man, he dropped that ball. No, he couldn't catch that.
- 55:53Speaker 3: He was standing right next to him. It was like
- 55:55Speaker 3: standing in front of a jug machine. I'm like, my goodness.
- 55:58Speaker 3: But he too is somebody that I think We haven't
- 56:02Speaker 3: seen what his capabilities are, but we also haven't seen
- 56:06Speaker 3: what Coach Shark is thinking about using him in some
- 56:09Speaker 3: of those positions as well. You look at some of
- 56:12Speaker 3: the other players in that wide receiver room. This is
- 56:15Speaker 3: an opportunity for guys to make a name for themselves.
- 56:18Speaker 3: They're all five stars. I mean, they're very talented, but
- 56:22Speaker 3: this could be a big game for another guy, obviously
- 56:25Speaker 3: not named Wingo or Cam Coleman.
- 56:27Speaker 4: Well, you talked about Emmitt Mosley, right? It's easy to
- 56:29Speaker 4: forget that Emmitt Mosley's played a lot of football. He
- 56:31Speaker 4: was a guy who instantly started at Stanford, got banged
- 56:35Speaker 4: up a little bit coming out of high school, but
- 56:36Speaker 4: as soon as he was healthy, was a starter. Unfortunately,
- 56:39Speaker 4: injuries have kind of been the story of his career.
- 56:41Speaker 4: He got banged up coming to Texas. As soon as
- 56:43Speaker 4: he was healthy, he was a starter. Emmitt Mosley, that's
- 56:46Speaker 4: a guy who, listen, as high as I am on
- 56:48Speaker 4: Chris Henry Jr. and Devin McCoon, again, I think those
- 56:50Speaker 4: are two talented guys. If you're just talking about position
- 56:54Speaker 4: for position, matchup team by team, I would take the
- 56:57Speaker 4: combination of Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Emmitt Mosley. We could
- 57:01Speaker 4: take Jermaine Bishop Jr. out of the equation for a second.
- 57:03Speaker 4: I would take those three over Ohio State's three. It's
- 57:06Speaker 4: not saying that the Buckeyes' three aren't talented, Mark, but
- 57:08Speaker 4: they haven't proved it like Texas' guys.
- 57:10Speaker 6: Have over their career.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Yeah, we're leaving out Dede McCutcheon.
- 57:13Speaker 11: That dude is talented, man, and I hope that he
- 57:17Speaker 11: gets to shine some. He needs a couple of scheme passes,
- 57:22Speaker 11: his direction like he did last year.
- 57:25Speaker 6: And he made plays in big games.
- 57:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he's got to show it. But I think,
- 57:33Speaker 3: once again, Coach Stark always talks about the trust factor
- 57:36Speaker 3: and making sure that those guys that are in the
- 57:39Speaker 3: game at those moments, not saying he doesn't trust him,
- 57:41Speaker 3: but I'm just saying at these particular moments, this game
- 57:44Speaker 3: right here, I don't think they're going to play 70 people.
- 57:47Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to play 80 or 90 people.
- 57:50Speaker 3: They're going to play the guys that he trusts that
- 57:52Speaker 3: are going to be able to go out there handle
- 57:54Speaker 3: the workload, understand assignment, and not afford to miss it. Look,
- 57:58Speaker 3: I got Texas winning this game, and we'll give those
- 58:00Speaker 3: predictions tomorrow, but I've been very open and honest about
- 58:04Speaker 3: what I think it is. But I believe that this
- 58:06Speaker 3: team is going to have to show us consistency.
- 58:10Speaker 6: At that point.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Those guys have got to be mad of the narrative
- 58:14Speaker 3: that they can't get over that hump against Ohio State.
- 58:17Speaker 3: They got to get mad about that Georgia thing. We
- 58:19Speaker 3: don't need to worry about Georgia because Georgia's not on
- 58:21Speaker 3: the schedule unless you're going to get to the end
- 58:25Speaker 3: of the season, and we're playing for an SEC championship.
- 58:27Speaker 3: But the focus right now is Ohio State, and they
- 58:31Speaker 3: have to come out and show that they are ready
- 58:34Speaker 3: for the test. I need you guys to come out
- 58:37Speaker 3: and show that you're ready to win some tickets and
- 58:39Speaker 3: eat some barbecue here at Cobra Ford of Austin right
- 58:42Speaker 3: here off of 183. You see Rudy's, you'll see us.
- 58:46Speaker 3: We're on the patio. Come and hang out with us.
- 58:49Speaker 3: There's a lot of things to give away. We got
- 58:52Speaker 3: iHeart giveaways. We've got tickets. We got Thomas Rhett tickets
- 58:56Speaker 3: for the, what is it?
- 58:57Speaker 1: Is he at the Moody?
- 58:59Speaker 3: Yeah, at the Moody Center. Come on out here and
- 59:01Speaker 3: hang out. We're going to be here until five. We'll
- 59:04Speaker 3: continue those conversations and so much more right here on
- 59:08Speaker 3: the round table at Covert Court of Austin. That's right,
- 59:12Speaker 3: right here on 183. Come and hang out.
- 59:24Speaker 7: We are here until 5 o'clock.
- 59:27Speaker 3: Make sure you get over here and get a chance
- 59:28Speaker 3: to enter to win a pair of tickets. Good tickets,
- 59:31Speaker 3: I'm sure. I mean, that's all we do over here
- 59:33Speaker 3: at iHeart.
- 59:34Speaker 6: We ain't giving no bad tickets.
- 59:35Speaker 3: We have a good time, and we make sure that
- 59:37Speaker 3: you have a good time. You also get a chance
- 59:39Speaker 3: to win some Thomas Rhett tickets, get some swag. Oh,
- 59:43Speaker 3: and Rudy's. Rudy's right here in front of us. They've
- 59:47Speaker 3: got some food here for you. While supplies last and
- 59:51Speaker 3: Mark already devoured one of them already. One down, 25
- 59:55Speaker 3: to go. That was just an appetizer for him. He's
- 59:58Speaker 3: going to get some more in there. But before we
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: get into hour number two, we want to take a
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: look around the SEC. And tonight there's one game. Missouri
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: taking on Kansas, the rivalry game. That game will be
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: on Fox tonight. And Missouri ranked number 22 in the
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: land and a team that showed a lot in game
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: one just because they got a new quarterback in Austin Simmons,
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: the guy that was supposed to be the quarterback until
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Trinidad Chambliss took over that job and never relinquished it. Tomorrow,
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: you've got games starting at 11 a.m. You have Oklahoma
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: at Michigan. This is a big, big telltale sign for Michigan.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: You talk about Bryce Underwood. He's at a crossroad. His
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: coach that brought him in, gone, got fired. A lot
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: of money out there. And now Kyle Whittingham, the former
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: Utah coach, is now at the helm of But the
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: story is more about Oklahoma, what they've been able to do,
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: what they did in that first game. They went out
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: and dominated. And Eric and Mark, we talk about this
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: all the time. You got to go out and dominate
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: the teams you're supposed to dominate.
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: Don't look bad.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: Look good. And that's exactly what Oklahoma did from the
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: very beginning, Mark.
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: They jumped on him with both feet, man.
- 1:01:16Speaker 11: And I thought that mature look as good as I've
- 1:01:21Speaker 11: seen him look since he's been at OU. had the
- 1:01:26Speaker 11: opportunity to see him up close and personal. And that guy,
- 1:01:31Speaker 11: he's gained about 10 or 15 pounds, too. He looks
- 1:01:34Speaker 11: really strong. And now they're saying that he's healthy and
- 1:01:39Speaker 11: the SEC has got a lot to.
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: Look out for.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: I'll say this about Oklahoma. And, you know, I took
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: a little bit of flack. SEC media days because I
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: voted Oklahoma as a top five team quite frankly I
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: thought they could finish fourth in the SEC maybe even
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: third really push Texas and Georgia in the Southeastern Conference
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: when you take a look at that team Mark.
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: We all know you should have took a lot of heat.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: Mark we all know you're partial to the big boys
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: right I think what they've done with that offensive line
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: a name that fans need to know I think Texas
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: fans might want to pay attention early before the Red
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: River shootout. Eddie Pierre-Louis, he is a left guard for Oklahoma.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: He was a kid who was recruited, a high four-star,
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: low five-star kid out of Tampa who started the last
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: six games of last season.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: They're betting on him.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: First off, you don't bring a sophomore who's only started
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: X amount of games, SEC media days, unless you think
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: you're going.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: To get big things out of him, right?
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: They're thinking if they can get him to his potential
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: on the offensive line, it can really spring that run game,
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: which we know was an issue, And I also think defensively.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: I think some players and teams have been a little low.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: On OU defensively.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: I know they lost some guys, but they still return
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: a lot of talent. I think Oklahoma's a team you're
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: going to really need to keep your eye on heading
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: into October 10th.
- 1:02:53Speaker 11: Not to mention their coach, that's where he hangs his
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: hat on defense. And he's had a lot of success
- 1:03:01Speaker 11: with that scheme. And I feel like that's going to
- 1:03:05Speaker 11: play an intricate part and Oklahoma's success.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: Another game that we need to pay attention to is
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: Texas A & M they will be taking on and
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: hosting Arizona State Arizona State they've been Kenny Dillingham has
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: been playing that woe is me and I don't know
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: what we're gonna do they're really good on film but
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: let's not get it twisted he's a doggone good coach
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: and they're gonna come in there ready to fight Marcel
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: Reed talking more about the University of Texas than he
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: is than his opponents that he's playing that week. And
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: I always say I know that they ask the question,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: so he's got to answer it. But he's talking way
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: too much about Texas Longhorns and the expectations at the
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: end of the season. You look at Alabama and Kentucky.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: I think this is a sneaky good matchup as well.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: You look at Keelan Russell, his first time going on
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: the road, being a starting quarterback, going into Kentucky. where
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Will Stein told everybody, pack your flask, get it into
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: the stadium. We want to make it as uncool as
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: it could be for them to come in there. Well,
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: let me just say this real quick.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: I'm not trying to bash Will Stein, but Will Stein's
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: a guy who, you know, he's new to the SEC.
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: I'm not trying to bash a fan base, but I
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: don't think I'm going to tell them, hey, go get
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: liquored up.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Go scream obscenities because, you.
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: Know, that can— And throw stuff at people.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: That might not sound exactly the.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: Way you wanted it to sound in the Southeastern Conference.
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: I'll just put it to you like that. Well, their
- 1:04:31Speaker 6: defense is solid.
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:04:33Speaker 11: They've had their struggles on offense getting people to commit
- 1:04:38Speaker 11: to coming to Kentucky, man. But I tell you what,
- 1:04:41Speaker 11: Lexington is a beautiful place. I spent a lot of
- 1:04:45Speaker 11: time there in Louisville in my Ohio Valley days. And
- 1:04:50Speaker 11: I got to see a couple of those games and
- 1:04:53Speaker 11: they play passionate football.
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: So C.J. C.J. Baxter had a couple of scores the
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: other day. I had a couple of scores and Minchie
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: is a really good quarterback and he's going to develop
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: and play well as he goes along. You look at
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Mississippi State traveling to Minnesota, Vanderbilt in Delaware, Florida playing
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: Campbell's soup is good food. Townsend at South Carolina. Tennessee
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: at Georgia Tech is a really good matchup as well.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: So that is something to pay attention to. Louisiana Tech
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: is going to.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: Louisiana Tech, I guess they bought a new car. Louisiana
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: Tech at LSU. So that's going to be interesting. And
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: Arkansas at Utah. That's a game late night that you
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: might want to pay attention to. I think Arkansas thinks
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: they have a solid team, but I'm interested to see
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: what Utah will bring to the table. Some news on
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: the 40 acres that sounds very, very promising. We're not
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: saying it's that great, but we will say that it
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: is promising, and we'll talk about it at the top
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: of the hour. But what game excites y'all the most
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: besides the obvious?
- 1:06:05Speaker 11: Oh, man, that's a tough one. I mean, just since
- 1:06:07Speaker 11: you mentioned it, like, I want to see Missouri. I
- 1:06:12Speaker 11: want to see what they're talking about because a lot
- 1:06:16Speaker 11: of the preseason prognosticators said that they're going to be
- 1:06:20Speaker 11: so much better this year than 22 shows. So I
- 1:06:24Speaker 11: want to see what that means. What does it mean?
- 1:06:28Speaker 11: You think they can beat some teams in the top 15?
- 1:06:30Speaker 11: I don't know. I have to see that with my
- 1:06:33Speaker 11: own eyes. I know Austin Simmons is a really good quarterback.
- 1:06:36Speaker 11: Lane Kiffin had him as his starting quarterback before. uh,
- 1:06:40Speaker 11: Trinidad Chambers took over and took, took the reins from them.
- 1:06:44Speaker 11: So I'm interested to see that one, but I'm also
- 1:06:46Speaker 11: really focused on that Michigan and, um, Oklahoma game because
- 1:06:51Speaker 11: of what it means for Bryce Underwood, but also gives
- 1:06:54Speaker 11: us an opportunity to see what Oklahoma has.
- 1:06:56Speaker 8: No.
- 1:06:57Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: I was going to say, if I was going to
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: pick a game, it would be Michigan and Oklahoma. I
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: know for me taking a look for both teams, right?
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: This is kind of a, a, I don't want to
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: say a crossroads for, for, for Michigan, but if they
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: lose this game, Ooh, everything, all of the conversation about
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: how they got, for all intents and purposes, I don't
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: care what mystery clock they want to come up with.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: How they got out of it. That should have been
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: a loss to Western Michigan.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: All of that comes back up.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: And for Oklahoma, for them to continue to make a statement,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: I think that's the game to really keep an eye
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: on in my mind.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with you on that because they have to
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: make a statement because of the battles that they go
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: through internally, externally, and out there in front of everyone.
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: We are here.

- 1:14:07Speaker 3: done some amazing work. And he's got a little bit
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: of information that came out on the 40 Acres just
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: a little while ago before we went to break. So, E,
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: tell us the latest on a special type of player
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: that Texas may or may not get tomorrow.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I actually got to credit my publication, or not mine,
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: but our publication, 24-7 Sportscase.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: The bosses are listening. I didn't just take it over.
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: Matt Zenitz does a great job covering national reports, says
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: that Texas running back Derek Cooper is going to be
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: a game-time decision. Take a look at Matt's tweet here,
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: and he said it was a game-time decision against Ohio
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: State per sources. That is interesting news because when we
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: asked Steve Sarkeesian for an update on Derek, he said, well,
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: you know, he's going to be, you know, in a
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: boot for a while.
- 1:14:51Speaker 6: We'll see what happens.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: You know, that when Steve... Foreseeable future. Foreseeable future.
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: Thank you for getting the exact verbiage. Thank you. When
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: we get that kind of... Forget the foreseeable future for
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: a second. Steve, when he's optimistic about injuries, right, and
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: he wants to make it know what guy's going to play,
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: you just say, well, hey, it's not as bad as
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: it might have seemed. You know, we think that this, that,
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: and the other. Don't read this too much. Read too
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: much into it. In this case, we got kind of
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: a language that said, hey, all right, Derek Cooper comes
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: out in that boot. Remember, after a second carry, right?
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: He heads back to the locker room in a boot. I...
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: I don't know how, Mark, Harjot, you guys feel. It's
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: not that you wouldn't want Derek Cooper out there on
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: the field, but I just think this isn't the type
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: of game you rush him back for when you have
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: a James Simon, someone who you've been really excited about,
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: Michael Terry, right? You have other guys who are equipped
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: to step up. And again, Hollywood Smothers, Raleigh Brown, those
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: guys were brought here for a reason. That's just my
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: take on whether you bring him back, but it sounds and,
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: you know, I guess I got some report to do
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: when I get off the air.
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: It sounds as if it's a game time decision for
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: Derek Cooper.
- 1:15:53Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm very high on Terry in the short yardage situation.
- 1:16:00Speaker 11: But James Simon, he runs with power. He runs with
- 1:16:04Speaker 11: an aggressiveness that reminds me a lot of how McCaffrey runs.
- 1:16:10Speaker 11: McCaffrey runs with such passion. He wants to get where
- 1:16:13Speaker 11: he's going. He's spinning, twisting, diving. Like, I think that's
- 1:16:17Speaker 11: a great asset to have.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: So that's going to be interesting to see how Texas
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: decides to roll and roll with Derek Cooper because he
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: is somebody that's got a lot of upside. You have
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: some depth at that running back position. So just like
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: any other position, I don't feel like there's a need
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: to rush that. And I believe Steve feels the same way.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: But I can't speak for him. I don't know for sure.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: And maybe they have some special packages that they were
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: looking at. For him to go from being one of
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: those guys that may be out for the foreseeable future,
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: and now we have him as a game-time decision, that
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: definitely shows his healing power to be back in there.
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: Well, we'll see in warm-up what he looks like.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: If he takes part in warm-ups, but yes. If he
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: does take part in warm-ups, yes. I mean, I think, Harge,
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: that's a natural segue in kind of talking about a
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: run game situation. And I think it's going to be
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: really important for Texas tomorrow. And it's something I talk
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: about with you guys. On Thursday, you know, Texas had
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: 10 runs stuffed against Texas State. I know Mark and
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: I were kind of talking yesterday saying, hey, you know,
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: maybe the game plan was a little vanilla, right? Maybe
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: there's going to be a different style of run that
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: Texas didn't show that they will show against Ohio State.
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: My point is this.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: I think it's going to be crucial. Remember, Texas went
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: 11 of 15 on third downs. Their average distance to
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: go on third downs was 6.7 yards. That's not necessarily ideal,
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: especially going up against Ohio State. Mark, I think Texas
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: needs to be better in those situations because it's not
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: going to be easy to replicate going 11 of 15
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: if you're in second and nine or third and eight
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: against an Ohio State compared to Texas State.
- 1:17:50Speaker 11: Well, I think the main reason, yeah, put this in
- 1:17:53Speaker 11: perspective too. Texas played 60 or 70 players, and some
- 1:17:58Speaker 11: of those guys are just finding their footing. They weren't
- 1:18:03Speaker 11: the guys that could stop the run as well as
- 1:18:06Speaker 11: the starters. Not to mention, Texas never did a run blitz.
- 1:18:11Speaker 11: They never did any inside sending the linebackers up the middle,
- 1:18:16Speaker 11: which is kind of the forte of Will Muschamp. if
- 1:18:21Speaker 11: they made it an emphasis to stop them from running
- 1:18:24Speaker 11: the game, the ball, they could have done it.
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: They just didn't. They played vanilla football.
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: Well, I think what Eric's is talking about when Texas
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: has the football and being able to run the football.
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: They got stuff themselves. They did. They couldn't move the
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: guy that's in front of them. That's why it's going
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: to be a different look for what they're going to
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: see when they go up against Ohio State. Yes, the
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: matchups on the offensive line were a little bit different.
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: The players were a little bit different. They hadn't had
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: a lot of practice together because they've had to deal
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: with injuries. But I agree with you. The guys that
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: Texas recruit should have been able to move the guys
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: from Texas State. You covered the G5s and the G4s,
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: and you understand what it looks like and how everybody's
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: talking about, well, now Texas looks like a team, like
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: the SEC should look. But the fact remains, they didn't
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: get the push that they were supposed to get and
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: where they were expected to run the football.
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: You take away that pop play at the.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: Very beginning of the game, it wasn't a good performance
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: by Texas. Whether it was vanilla or not, they should
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: have been able to dominate Texas.
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: State up front.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: And, Harge, again, I'm not trying to make a mound
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: out of a molehill.
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: No, no, not at all.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: But, again, to your point, you take away the 45-yard
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: run to start the game. You take away Raleigh Brown's
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: two chunk plays, right, 22 yards and 13 yards.
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: Outside of that, That was the bulk of Texas' rushing yards, right?
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: I do like the bulk plays and them being able
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: to have that. And again, that's.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: Why I say I'm not trying to speak out of
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: both sides of my mouth because I was critical of
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: Texas last year for not getting those big-time plays, right?
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: So I don't want to say, oh, they got the
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: big plays, but they're only getting this. But there is
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: a happy medium, right? The only reason why I stress it,
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: coming back to you, Mark, is you opened the show
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: by saying Texas needs to make a statement when they
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: have that short-yarded situation, right?
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: When they're in the red zones. I'm a big believer.
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: I'm sure you guys are as former athletes, right? The
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: way you do it sometimes is the way you do
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: it all the times. You can't just turn it on
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: at a certain point, right? So despite it being Texas State,
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: you would like to see, all right, Texas, if they
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: need one yard, they need two yards. Sure, you want
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: to see them go get 30, but also see maybe
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: a Michael Terry or James Simon go get three yards,
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: move the chains, and do it effectively. That's my only point.
- 1:20:30Speaker 11: Guys, we also had a situation where You have a
- 1:20:33Speaker 11: quarterback that can actually really do it. He can pick
- 1:20:36Speaker 11: him up and put him down. But I know he
- 1:20:37Speaker 11: was under the restraints of, hey, don't do it.
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: And he didn't.
- 1:20:43Speaker 11: Tomorrow's going to be a new day. I expect Archman
- 1:20:47Speaker 11: to have at least 50 yards and a touchdown.
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: Rushing.
- 1:20:51Speaker 6: So that's going to add to the kitty.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: Absolutely. I mean, and to your point, yes, we all
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: understood that he wasn't going to be running. There were
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: opportunities for him to get out of the pocket. He
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: decided not to. And he did what his job was
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: asked to do. But I still believe if you have
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: the horses up front, you have the backs, you went
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: out and got these Lamborghinis. Let's go ahead and use
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: these Lamborghinis to.
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: Make sure that you got it.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: But you also got to have. those built-for-tough guys up
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: in the front of it to be able to move
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: that furniture around. So we'll see what ends up happening.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: I'm excited for the game because of the matchups. We've
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: been talking about the battle of the trenches and which
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: part is going to be able to happen. You look
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: at the defensive line and the offensive line. We had
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: people on our show from Ohio State texting and saying,
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: I'm worried about our tackles. I'm worried about it against Texas.
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: Their offensive tackles are a little bit different. Their offensive line,
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: they're still trying to figure out their way because they
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: did not run the ball well besides their explosive plays.
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and kind of coming back, I know there's a
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: point that I'll kind of merge the point that Mark
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: had made a couple segments earlier and what you were
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: saying about Ohio State's offensive line, right? Ball State last
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: week ran for 45 yards. That's the kind of performance
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: you would hope Texas put forth there, right? But on
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: the flip side, how they were able to kind of
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: counteract that is Entering the year, Ohio State's offensive line
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: was a question mark, right? With some of the guys
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: they had, they're trying to figure out, hey, do we
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: have the horses up front, those big boys that Mark loves,
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: to really protect Julian Sane and to spring their own
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: run game? It's still a question mark. When we spoke
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: with Pat Murphy on our Horns 24-7 podcast, Pat said,
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: I'm not going to lie. We didn't learn because it
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: was all vanilla against Boise State, against Ball State, right?
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: So it's going to be kind of a situation where
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: Ohio State's learning about themselves, Texas learning about themselves as well.
- 1:22:39Speaker 11: Well, I expect a lot more aggression. And I see
- 1:22:45Speaker 11: stunts happening on defense. I see the run game being
- 1:22:49Speaker 11: not just straight ahead blocking.
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: I see some traps. I see some counter trades.
- 1:22:57Speaker 11: And last year we saw them run a counter trade
- 1:23:00Speaker 11: that was designed for Arch. And Arch ran about seven
- 1:23:04Speaker 11: yards and slid. He could have easily kept trying. So
- 1:23:09Speaker 11: I won't see some of those creative plays that Sark
- 1:23:11Speaker 11: has drawn up.
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: Well, I think those are the hidden yards that we
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: didn't see last week. And I think we all can
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: agree that Arch is going to be.
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: I just don't want you to panic.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: No, ain't nobody panicking. What we're talking about is Arch
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: is going to be able to beat Arch. And that's
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: what Coach Sark believes in. Arch is a powerful runner.
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: He's going to be able to move around and do
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: the things because... Those hidden runs that he could have
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: had last week, that would have added to the rushing total.
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: That would have been a better way to look at
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: the yards per rush average and things like that. But again,
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: we don't want to major in Arch Manning running the football.
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: Coach Sarkis said it multiple times. I don't major in
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: my quarterback running the football.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: Listen, Steve Sarkisian said he's never going to be a
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: major in quarterback run, never going to have a PhD
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: in the quarterback run game.
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: But.
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: We talked about, we opened the segment talking about Derek Cooper,
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: his availability. Could he have a role as the short
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: yardage back? Michael Terry, James Simon. Well, you know who
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: Texas' most effective short yardage and goal line back has been?
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: Archman.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: It's been number 16, Archman, the 6'5, 225-pound quarterback, right?
- 1:24:16Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: And that is a situation, going back to what we
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: talked about earlier, right, where you have to play... 11
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: on 11 in the red zone. You can't just take
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: the quarterback out of it because arch is a guy
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: who's very capable with his legs. I think that's an
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: area where if you want to, you know, I hate
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: to use this word, but unleash arch Manning, right? It
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: would be there in the red zone, in the goal
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: line situations where it say, Hey, big boy, Go get
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: us in, right? If for whatever reason, say, you know,
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: because you guys both talk about confidence. You need to
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: establish that confidence early. Don't get an early stop. Show
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: that you can do it. I think number 16 is
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: the way to do that.
- 1:24:50Speaker 11: When you go into an RPO and a zone read,
- 1:24:55Speaker 11: that Texas running backs can get the outside because they're
- 1:24:58Speaker 11: going to have Arch being a threat on the inside.
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: So I love the fact.
- 1:25:05Speaker 11: That that RPO system is going to be a... beneficial
- 1:25:09Speaker 11: to what texas is going to do anymore.
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: Yeah it's going to be a big time challenge for
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: both of these teams we expect both quarterbacks to use
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: their legs in this ball game And, of course, you
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: want to make sure that you can run the ball
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: to set up that pass because there's a lot.
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: Coach Shark might do it backwards.
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: He may throw the ball to set up the run
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: because that's how he rolls. When we come back, we're
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: going to take a look behind enemy lines. We're going
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: to look at Ohio State and what they are looking
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: for and how their defense may be a part of
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: this equation. Right here on the Roundtable Discussion from Cobra
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: Ford of Austin on 183. Research, if you know what
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: I'm talking about.
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: Right by Rudy's.
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: Come and get a new car. Covert Ford of Austin.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: Still got a little bit of time to get over
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: here to Covert Ford of Austin right here off of 183.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: They call it research. So get over here. And of course,
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: we still got some Rudy's for you. Get a chance
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: to win a pair of tickets to Texas. and Ohio State.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: You also get a chance to win some Thomas Rhett tickets,
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: get some swag from iHeart, and, of course, you get
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: to meet the Roundtable crew. Myself, Harbaugh Hards, the world's
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: strongest man, WWE Hall of Famer, the Mark Henry, and,
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: of course, we've got our guy, Eric Henry of Horns247,
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: as we get ready to continue this conversation. But I
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: want to get into this because, E, we got a
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: chance to talk to one of your counterpoints, over at Bucknuts247.
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: Our guy, Pat Murphy, Patrick Murphy. You can follow him
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: on social media if you want to get the latest
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: at underscore Pat underscore Murphy. And this is a big
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: opportunity for this Texas football team, not only because of
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: the magnitude of this game being at DKR, being at home,
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: but you get a chance to probably try to exploit
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: some players over at Ohio State. Now, listen. We talk
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: about the recruiting that Texas does. Ohio State is A1
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: as well. So they're not getting pushovers. They got a
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: bunch of transfers that came in as well to fill
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: some of those voids from all of those top draft picks.
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: But this is a big opportunity for the Texas Longhorns
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: against a formidable defense led by Matt Patricia.
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: Yeah, no, listen, whenever you, and this is one of
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: the things that Steve Sarkeesian noted in his Monday press conference,
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: I think he did Thursday as well.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: Ohio State having two former NFL coordinators.
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: I've never been a guy that's been like, man, those
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: pro coordinators come down, it's great. But I do think
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: at this level, when you're running pro-style schemes, it really
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: does make a difference.
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: If you're running collegiate.
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: Schemes, for lack of a better example, like the Art
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: Browse offense, having a pro-style coordinator is not going to
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: help you. But when you're running these pro-style schemes, it helps.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: And you talked about Matt Patricia on defense. I think
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: one of the names to keep an eye on, or
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: I'll give you two up front in my opinion.
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: One, Edrick Houston.
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: He was a guy who was expected to be the
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: breakout star of this defense, a guy who's kind of
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: a hybrid edge, hybrid tackle, very athletic, strong enough and
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: athletic enough to do both jobs inside and outside.
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: You can't, again, can't really tell.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: What you got from him.
- 1:28:22Speaker 11: Which side does he play on?
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: Defensive line, defensive line.
- 1:28:25Speaker 6: Yeah, so he's a right defensive end tackle?
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: Yes, so he'll kind of rotate between left, right, and
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: defensive tackle, depending on whatever scheme that map is playing.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: They don't really lock down one side.
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: They sometimes flip side to side, depending on uh what
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: side they're on the hash mark but uh to that
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: point right edric houston is a guy also a name
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: i think texas fans need to know is john walker
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: the big defensive tackle a ucf transfer someone who was
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: kind of an interesting story guys because ohio state recruited
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: him steve sarkisian talked about larry johnson the you know
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: really long time defensive line coach in college football and
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: They recruited him out of high school, and he said
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: no to Ohio State to stay home at UCF.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: They were kind of stunned.
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: They were like, no one says no to Ohio State,
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: especially in the NIL era, right? This time around, they
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: go get him out of the transfer portal. He's going
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: to be their big run stuffer. Him and Houston are
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: the two guys you've got to account for if Texas
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: is going to have success running the football and to
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: keep pressure out of Arch Manning's face.
- 1:29:20Speaker 11: Was there a specific reason that he decided.
- 1:29:23Speaker 6: To stay home?
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: Well, if you ask UCF folks, it was out of loyalty.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: It was out of, you know, a guy who was
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: kind of too young to leave home, wanted to be
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: around his family. But there are some other folks who
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: would say, well, you know, they put together a nice
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: lucrative package for him. And that, you know, there was
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: kind of a, I guess, for lack of a better phrase.
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: A kinfolk deal.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: Well, the kinfolk deal, but also an assumption that we're
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: Ohio State. We're not going to lose this kid to UCF, right?
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: And then he decided not to leave home. So that
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: was one of the things kind of with John Walker.
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: Another thing that I wanted to talk about on that
- 1:29:55Speaker 3: defensive side is obviously, as you mentioned, trying to get
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: pressure on Arch Manning. But if Arch Manning has time,
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: that secondary is going to be challenged as well as
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: the linebackers. Are there some guys back there? Because last
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: year you had Sonny Stiles, you had Caleb Downs. You
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: had guys that were cerebral in the defensive side of
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: the football. But looking at that team and where they
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: are right now, some of the guys that they transferred in,
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: Is there any names that people should look for or
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: numbers that they should?
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: Yeah, safety Jalen McLean is the guy who really took
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: over the Caleb Downs role, right? And again, it's almost
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: unfair to a player to say the Caleb Downs role, right?
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: Like who just walks in and goes the Caleb Downs role.
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: But Jalen McLean is the guy safety. I think not
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: just because of his coverage skills, Mark and Harge, but
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: because they may try to use him as an additional
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: guy in the box, right? Not only to play and
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: run support, excuse me, but also If Matt Patricia does blitz,
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: and Matt Patricia's a guy who's not known for being
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: as aggressive as Will Muschamp, right? He's more of a
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: scheme guy to kind of force guys with his front
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: four to create pressure. But they have been known, Matt
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: Patricia's been known to use downs to blitz, right? Jalen
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: McClain is the guy you want to look at in
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: that secondary.
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: That's interesting.
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's interesting, especially to your point of what you said,
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: where it's unfair to put him in the Caleb Downs, area,
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: but now you are having to play that position. Hey, man,
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: we bring you in here to fill these shoes. You
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: got to do what Downs did. And then that's when
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: you just say, listen, I don't.
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: Have a cape on.
- 1:31:29Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: Because Caleb Downs did everything for that football team, which
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: is why he was the first round pick for the
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: Dallas Cowboys and is expected to be a big part
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: of the success that the Cowboys have. You know, we
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: talked a little bit about this for Texas football. We
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: talked about their special teams and the plays that could happen.
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: The same thing could happen for them. They have some
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: special type of players, and you brought up something to
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: me about Bay. He is one heck of a football player,
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: and he may think a little bit that he's still
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: in high school with some of the thoughts that he had.
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: Legend Bay, he got in trouble last weekend in the
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: special teams department. Legend Bay did.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: You know, if you talk about a kid who's really,
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: like Harge mentioned, very special player. Talent, and as you said,
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: still think he's in high school. In high school, if
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: that up man, Mark, says, pause, we're not coming out.
- 1:32:20Speaker 6: Pause.
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: Well, in high school, you might come out, right? But
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: in college, it means pause.
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: It does not mean come out.
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: And Legend Bay twice waved off his guy like hard,
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: you know, you played baseball, waved off the third base.
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: Coach, and I'm coming home. I'm scoring, I'm scoring.
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: And Legend Bay decided to take the ball out. Not
- 1:32:36Speaker 4: Matt Patricia, Ryan Day ripped into him and said, hey,
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: when we practice this, if we say this, put your
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: hands up don't come out but legend bay is a
- 1:32:45Speaker 4: guy who part of the reason he feels so confident
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: he's kind of their version of jermaine bishop right a
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: guy who did nothing but score touchdowns really electric if
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: you may you know for those i'll give a quick
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: synopsis may it may not know a legend bay story
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: was a kid who wanted to go to ohio state
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: out of high school mark but when you're under 18
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: you need that parental guardian to sign off on your
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: papers to sign with your school right His mother said,
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: I will not sign your papers to go to Ohio State.
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: I want you to go to Tennessee.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: I want you to be closer to home. So Legend
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Bay said, okay, fine.
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: I'm going to go to Tennessee, wait until his 18th birthday,
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: and then told Josh Heupel, coach, I don't want to
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: be here.
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: I want to be at Ohio State.
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: Josh Heupel, I think, did the right thing by the
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: player and said, okay, if you don't want to be here,
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: we'll let you out.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: He ended up.
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: Transferring before he even went to class at Tennessee, transferred
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: to Ohio State, and that's how he ended up there
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: this year.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: That's an amazing story. And, you know, sometimes you forget
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: about it. I wonder how often that happens. It happens more.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: It happens a lot more than you think because you
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: can go back to the days of National Signing Day
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: when HaHa Clinton did some.
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: You remember that?
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: Yeah, she was like, nah, man, I'm not signing off
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: on this. You know, it's just one of those things
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: that you have to make a decision on your own
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: at some point. And if Ohio State You can't go
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: wrong with any of those schools. But you look at
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: Ohio State and that was the school that you wanted
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: to go to from.
- 1:34:07Speaker 6: The very beginning.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: And you've got to be able to have that. So, yeah,
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: there's going to be some moments in this game that
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: we're going to go back and look at and be like, oh,
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: that was a deciding factor. Oh, that was a momentum swing.
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: And a guy running the ball out of the back
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: of the end zone when he's being told not to,
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: field position and everything else that goes along with that
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: could play a huge part in it. And super quick, Harge, right?
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: Just not to, you know, kind of bash Legend Bay,
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: but the reason it's so important, you might get away
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: with it against Ball State.
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: You don't want the kid to.
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: Think, okay, I got away with it against Ball State,
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: so I can do it against Texas.
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: No, that's how you get a turnover. It's funny, Harge,
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: you may remember this.
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: I didn't grow up a Texas fan, so I saw
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: the play on Twitter for the first time.
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: Was it Ramones Taylor? Yeah. Against Ohio State, right? Yes.
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: He took the step. He was right there on the
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: goal line, and then he was like, should I go?
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: Should I stop? Should I? Oh, I got to go.
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: The coverage is coming. That's what you're trying to prevent
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: in that type of big-time game. You don't want that
- 1:35:04Speaker 4: to happen. Every moment matters in this ballgame.
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: You know, we talk about not making it bigger than
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: the last game or what the play is and the
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: moments that are here, but it does matter. Every play matters.
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: Everything is sequential here. in this game, and it does
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: have consequences when you look at it. They have to
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: put that pressure on them.
- 1:35:23Speaker 6: Texas, in this equation, is a veteran team.
- 1:35:27Speaker 11: You know, they have more guys that have started because
- 1:35:31Speaker 11: of all of the mass departures that happened at Ohio
- 1:35:34Speaker 11: State last year.
- 1:35:35Speaker 6: So I think that also is going to be a factor.
- 1:35:38Speaker 11: The fact that you have guys that have already played
- 1:35:41Speaker 11: in this system, they understand it, they're the leaders, and
- 1:35:45Speaker 11: they can influence the game, not... just from being on
- 1:35:49Speaker 11: the field but from the sideline as well.
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: Yeah it's a it's an interesting dynamic for both of
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: these teams where they are and how they're going about
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: their business i do want to bring this up because
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: i think it's important because you've heard this from a
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: lot of players on this team it's the togetherness on
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: the university of texas team you've heard raheem biles and
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: his story is unbelievable where he is now and what
- 1:36:13Speaker 3: he was able to do even this week with his foundation.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: So that's something that we'll touch on tomorrow. But you
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: look at this team, they came in together and they
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: learned defensively, they learned together. And the mistakes that were
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: being made, they all had to correct them. Raheem talking
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: about Coach Muschamp getting on him. There's a reason why
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: he got on you and now you can't make that
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: same mistake again. And when you're learning together and not
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: having to be taught by somebody, you're learning from the
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: actual teacher That's a powerful thing. When we all struggle together,
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: we find a way to fight through it together. And
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: that's that, what do they call it? That culture Wednesday
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: type of day. Those are the types of things you
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: think about.
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: No, Harge, I mean, you can't emphasize that enough, right?
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: It's not like, hey, we got a transfer coming in.
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: One or two guys have to learn the new defense
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: and those guys inevitably gravitate to the guys they came
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: in with, right? They become friends. No, this was We
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: all are learning the defense together, right? I hate to
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: bring up, you know, kind of old situation, but I'm
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: going to use it to make the point in terms
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: of learning the defense.
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: Ty Anthony Smith was injured, right? Entering spring.
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: He didn't get a chance to learn the defense. What
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: that paved the way for was a Justin Cryer to
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: learn the defense alongside Raheem Biles. Those guys build chemistry.
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: All of a sudden it results in a tandem. I
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: do think to your point, right? That's kind of that,
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: you know, those bonds are forged by the fire, those
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: dog days in spring and fall.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: And Mark, I think this is the time, right?
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: You go through all of that stuff during fall, during spring,
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: during summer, during summer workouts, during fall. These are the
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: types of games that you want to show out and say,
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: this is what it was for.
- 1:37:50Speaker 11: Yeah, well, you learn to depend on that guy. And
- 1:37:54Speaker 11: that guy can communicate to you almost telepathically or with signals.
- 1:37:59Speaker 11: And you have this kinship. Now you go, I got this.
- 1:38:02Speaker 11: And you move Like, man, I.
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: Understand.
- 1:38:07Speaker 11: And Harjit, you too, you played pro ball for, what,
- 1:38:12Speaker 11: 20 years?
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: Like, I mean, like 30 years, something like that? Yeah, 30.
- 1:38:16Speaker 11: But guys, like, you learn to be able to kind
- 1:38:22Speaker 11: of telepathically exist with somebody when you play with them enough.
- 1:38:26Speaker 11: And Texas has more guys in that spot. since the
- 1:38:31Speaker 11: spring than they did last year. Like, those guys are gone.
- 1:38:36Speaker 11: They made it to the pros. God bless them. But
- 1:38:39Speaker 11: these guys all came in together through the spring, through
- 1:38:42Speaker 11: the summer workouts, and they worked together on the same goal.
- 1:38:46Speaker 11: They didn't know another system. So I'm excited to see
- 1:38:50Speaker 11: what it looks like. Have y'all learned how to telepathically
- 1:38:52Speaker 11: do radio?
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: I'm just curious. All the time. I'm just curious.
- 1:38:55Speaker 6: We finish each other's sentences.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: We did a show side by side. Yeah, it was awesome.
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: For those of y'all who are listening, Hargis is giving
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: me a look like, you know, why'd you go there?
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: I'm just curious as y'all do.
- 1:39:12Speaker 11: I wanted to trade seats with you just so I
- 1:39:15Speaker 11: could be.
- 1:39:15Speaker 3: Closer to them. Well, I'm glad that you got here
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: when you did because that seat was already warmed up
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: for you. And yes, we did sit by each other
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: on the radio yesterday.
- 1:39:24Speaker 6: And let me just tell you, my life has.
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: Never been the same. When we come back, we're going
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: to continue the conversations. We're going to get all the
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: way into this game. What's going to be some of
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: the factors? And is this the year that SART handles
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: Ohio State? He's got the toys to do it. But
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: we are here at Covert Ford of Austin having a
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: roundtable right here off of Research 183, just south of Rudy's.
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: Make sure you come and hang out. We still got
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: some food. We got some tickets. We're about to give
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: them away soon, so you better hurry up right here
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: on Sports Radio AM 1300. The Zone.
