Transcript
- 0:11Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
- 0:14It is Megan with vigilante vibes and I'm here with another
- 0:17character breakdown and I'm continuing to discuss all of the
- 0:21mutants, mostly underrated mutants of the Marvel Universe.
- 0:25Usually I do underrate A mutants, but I have to talk
- 0:28about the guy who is the talk of the town lately with X-Men Age
- 0:32of Revelation happening. Of course, I'm talking about
- 0:35none other than Doug Ramsey who is now Revelation if you did not
- 0:39know that. So I would like to talk about
- 0:42him and I think I will start right now.
- 0:44So who is Doug Ramsey? His first full appearance was a
- 0:47New Mutants 13 and he was created by Chris Claremont and
- 0:50Sal Busima. Doug Ramsey grew up in Salem
- 0:53Center with his parents, Philip and Sheila.
- 0:56His dad was a lawyer who once helped Professor Xavier with the
- 0:59paperwork for opening the school for gifted youngsters, though he
- 1:02had no clue Xavier or any of his students were mutants, he just
- 1:06strictly the paperwork. Doug eventually became close
- 1:10friends with Kitty Pride My girl, after she moved to
- 1:13Westchester to join the X-Men. They bonded over computers,
- 1:16video games, general nerd stuff like the little nerds they are.
- 1:21For reasons no one ever really explained.
- 1:24Xavier suspected Doug might be a mutant, but didn't try to
- 1:27recruit him. Emma Frost, however, absolutely
- 1:31did try. She offered him a scholarship to
- 1:34the Massachusetts Academy so she could eventually turn him into
- 1:37one of her hellions. Doug and Kitty even hacked into
- 1:40Project Wide Awake together, and she tagged along when he went
- 1:45for his final interview. Kitty did not trust Emma, right?
- 1:48Rightfully so. Very good instinct.
- 1:52Kitty and Emma ended up kidnapping her, which is so Emma
- 1:57the new mutant saved Kitty. Doug didn't attend the Academy,
- 2:01and that whole situation never really got addressed.
- 2:03After Doug stayed friends with the new mutants, though, they
- 2:06hid their powers from him until Warlock crashed into the mansion
- 2:09one night. In the chaos, the team finally
- 2:12told Doug the truth and asked him to help communicate with the
- 2:14alien. Doug succeeded, and both he and
- 2:17Warlock ended up joining the team.
- 2:19Doug took the code name Cypher because his mutant power let him
- 2:24understand any language spoken, written, coded, anything.
- 2:27He often felt useless in fights, even though his abilities ended
- 2:32up helping more often than he realized.
- 2:34He and Warlock became particularly tight, basically
- 2:38besties. His first big mission was
- 2:40helping save rock star Lila Cheney from the Vrakanen, where
- 2:44he literally saved the planet by decoding A damaged Stargate
- 2:48before it blew. He and Kitty later wrote a
- 2:51program together to mess with the murder world's computers.
- 2:55Doug had a handful of intense adventures after that, fighting
- 2:59alongside Karma, going to Asgard, getting Magneto as a
- 3:03teacher, which frustrated Doug because Magneto was super
- 3:06overprotective and helping save Silac from Mojo, learning to
- 3:12merge with Warlock physically and mentally, which came with
- 3:16the risk of him catching the Transmode virus.
- 3:19He even developed a crush on Silac, rightfully so.
- 3:23And when Mojo turned a bunch of X-Men into X babies, Doug's
- 3:28admission of his feelings helped free her from brainwashing.
- 3:32She liked him back, but since Doug was underage, nothing came
- 3:35of it. Speaking of X babies, Mojo's
- 3:38back on his usual bullshit in the Age of Revelation event
- 3:44because those ex babies are back and I hate Mojo so much.
- 3:49Things escalated when Warlock's dad Magus was attacked.
- 3:53Doug and Warlock ended up rewriting Magus's DNA and
- 3:56reducing him to an infant, but Doug started showing early signs
- 4:00of infection from all the merging.
- 4:03Doug also had some teenage drama.
- 4:07Teret flirted with him, Roulette manipulated him, and he spent a
- 4:11drunken night with her that caused tension between the New
- 4:15Mutants and the Hellions. He also refused to communicate
- 4:19with Bird Brain out of jealousy until Magneto threatened to
- 4:22return the creature to the authorities, which pushed Doug
- 4:25to help. Eventually, during a fight with
- 4:28Animator, Doug saw Wolfsbane about to be shot and he threw
- 4:32himself in front of the bullets. He was killed instantly.
- 4:35His last words were asking Ron not to be mad at him.
- 4:40His death devastated the team. Magic even tossed the Animator
- 4:45into limbo to be eaten by demons.
- 4:47Which is. I guess that's fair.
- 4:50Warlock didn't understand death and briefly animated Doug's
- 4:53corpse to remind him what it was like to be alive, but the New
- 4:58Mutants eventually laid dug to rest.
- 5:00Later, Eli Bard resurrected Doug using the Transmode virus, and
- 5:05Doug ended up fighting alongside the reanimated hellions on
- 5:09Utopia. Warlock eventually freed him
- 5:13from mind control, and Doug reconnected emotionally with
- 5:16Magma after whispering a secret language only she could
- 5:19understand. Which is, I don't want to say
- 5:23cute, but it's oddly sexy. I don't know.
- 5:28I don't know, just ignore that. Doug went on to play a huge role
- 5:34during the Bastion attacks, convincing Warlock to absorb
- 5:38Hodge to save the team, helping X Force and Cable stop a
- 5:41Sentinel invasion, and ultimately surviving Cable
- 5:44sacrifice. Afterward Doug struggled with an
- 5:47addiction to decoding everything, which I guess
- 5:50there's worse addictions to the point where he became a filthy
- 5:54half starved hermit trying to decode the entire Internet.
- 5:59Daredevil and others pulled him out of it, though he did almost
- 6:02kill someone for unplugging his Wi-Fi.
- 6:05Same. He eventually admitted to
- 6:08needing help. Doug kept getting pulled into
- 6:11major mutant events. Getting injured by Albert,
- 6:15decoding secrets from the Zatoria, and eventually being
- 6:20brought to Krakoa by Xavier and Myra Mctaggart.
- 6:23Doug was the one who communicated with the living
- 6:27island and created the systems mutants used to travel, defend
- 6:31the island and basically make the place function.
- 6:35While acting suspicious of Xavier, he secretly fused with
- 6:39Warlock again, let Warlock listen in on Krakoa's secrets,
- 6:43and even helped create Myra's Hidden No Space.
- 6:47Doug joined the Quiet Council representing Krakowa itself,
- 6:51helped establish Krakowa's laws, and later participated in the 10
- 6:56of Swords tournament. Instead of fighting, he ended up
- 6:59marrying his opponent, BAE the Blood Moon, and earning points
- 7:03for both of their teams. When a Rocco evaded, Doug
- 7:08convinced BAE to switch sides and the two moved to Krakowa
- 7:12together. He also had a strange back and
- 7:15forth. A Saber tooth in the pit helped
- 7:17stop Mystique and Destiny from killing Myra and got temporarily
- 7:21imprisoned by Krakow to protect him when the Council came under
- 7:26Sinister's influence. Krakowa eventually released him
- 7:30during the Orcas War, where Doug hacked the Sentinels using code
- 7:35Sebastian Shaw slipped him. Doug later helped reinstate A
- 7:39displaced piece of Krakoa, traveled to the White hot room,
- 7:43and against all odds, won a tournament to choose
- 7:46Apocalypse's successor. So Doug Ramsey, the kid who
- 7:50understood languages, ended up becoming Revelation Apocalypse's
- 7:54heir. And that's where we are today.
- 7:56He is Revelation. I did read the Apocalypse, the
- 8:01tournament for Apocalypse's successor.
- 8:04That was a that was a fun miniseries that I feel like
- 8:07really didn't get the appreciation it deserved.
- 8:11So, but right now in Marvel Comics, as I've mentioned
- 8:15before, the Age of Revelation is in full swing and it's going
- 8:19really well. It is dark that you get a little
- 8:23bit of everyone's perspective in it.
- 8:27I can't remember what comes out this week.
- 8:30I think it's Omega Kids 2 and something else, but it's been
- 8:34really cool. Basically, it's about 10 years
- 8:38into the future. Scott's mind was switched in the
- 8:44new X-Men run run with his future self.
- 8:48And now he's, you know, in the future and revelation has taken
- 8:53over everything. He released a gene bomb that
- 8:57released an X virus that turns that basically it will it will
- 9:05mess with your mutation. If you are a human, you will
- 9:08either become a mutant or you will die.
- 9:10Like black cat's a mutant right now and loving it like it's
- 9:13very, very interesting. Also Sam Wilson as president.
- 9:17They just dropped that little bit of tidbit of knowledge.
- 9:21But it's it's cool. I like it, it's fun.
- 9:23It's in the future. So it's like it could all just
- 9:26be undone, you know? So there's no not going to be
- 9:30any lasting effects of it, but it's fun.
- 9:32I definitely recommend checking it out.
- 9:36But yeah, like always, I have some comics for you to check out
- 9:39to get to know Doug Ramsey even better.
- 9:41So I say New mutants #13 through 64.
- 9:46It's a lot of reading, but it's good reading.
- 9:50X-Men, Heir to Apocalypse, it's a miniseries.
- 9:53I think it's like 4 or 5 comics. It's fun, it's quick, you'll
- 9:57like it. And I say dive into the X-Men
- 10:02Age of Revelation. So I would say start with X-Men
- 10:05Age of Revelation Overture. You really don't need to know
- 10:10much about it going in. They do a really good job
- 10:13explaining it, so you should be fine.
- 10:15But yeah, so that is Doug Ramsey.
- 10:18I thought it would be a good time to talk about him since he
- 10:20is the big man on campus. He's the talk of town.
- 10:24Oi hope you enjoyed it. I hope you'll like and
- 10:26subscribe, and I hope you have a marvelous day.
