- 0:21Speaker 1: Thanks to Bijan Robinson and Justin Jefferson for joining us.
- 0:24Speaker 1: The NFL kicks off tonight. Jerome Bettis could have joined
- 0:27Speaker 1: us in a couple of minutes. Mikey, I was wrong
- 0:29Speaker 1: about the tennis match that I tried to get off
- 0:31Speaker 1: the ground earlier, and you stole it with your bowling match,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and it was a much better story, and I'm glad
- 0:35Speaker 1: we went there, and it made my day. That match
- 0:37Speaker 1: was over at 3.33 a.m. last night. Three, and it
- 0:40Speaker 1: was a packed house. Packed house, Flushing Meadow, 3.33 a.m.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Alcaraz and Shelton walked off that court. I mean, that's crazy, man.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I've been to the U.S. Open.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I've covered the U.S. Open.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I pity anybody who was trying to leave that match
- 0:59Speaker 3: in that stadium at that time and trying to get home.
- 1:03Speaker 3: That must have been an absolute nightmare.
- 1:06Speaker 1: The amazing thing was no one in that crowd wanted
- 1:09Speaker 1: to leave. The quality of tennis was so high. The
- 1:13Speaker 1: match was so good. Yes, of course, they're thinking, hey,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I got work the next day. Hey, I need to
- 1:19Speaker 1: get home at some point. But if you pay that
- 1:21Speaker 1: kind of money for those tickets to see Alcaraz play
- 1:24Speaker 1: for a chance to go to the semifinals against an
- 1:27Speaker 1: American at Ben Shelton, who's trying to get a win
- 1:30Speaker 1: like this on his resume against someone like Alcaraz, and
- 1:33Speaker 1: he actually does it, you were glued. There's no way. Mikey,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I could have went to sleep in my bed. I
- 1:38Speaker 1: was already home, and I chose to stay up and
- 1:40Speaker 1: watch the match. I mean, crazy.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, or they didn't want to fight the traffic.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah, well, the NFL kicks off tonight.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I'm sitting here.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Where's that, Dan? It's your fault. So anyway, what are
- 2:00Speaker 1: you interested in tonight's game? We'll get to Jerome Bettis
- 2:02Speaker 1: in the second year. Patriots Seahawks. I think the Seahawks
- 2:05Speaker 1: are a three and a half point favorite, according to FanDuel.
- 2:08Speaker 1: There's the obvious new wide receiver with the Patriots. There's
- 2:11Speaker 1: the obvious off field stuff with with Mike Vrabel. to
- 2:16Speaker 1: keep an eye on as the season rolls along here.
- 2:19Speaker 1: But what are you looking at? And people aren't taking
- 2:20Speaker 1: Seattle for real, and they should. Seattle's a really good
- 2:23Speaker 1: team with a good defense and a solid quarterback and
- 2:26Speaker 1: very good wide receivers. I mean, we should be taking
- 2:30Speaker 1: Seattle more seriously than we are as a team that
- 2:33Speaker 1: just won a Super Bowl, but we're not because of
- 2:35Speaker 1: Sam Darnold. It's odd, you know?
- 2:37Speaker 3: That's a Super Bowl-winning quarterback or whatever else. For me, personally...
- 2:42Speaker 3: But they didn't.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Win a Super Bowl despite Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold made
- 2:45Speaker 1: big plays along the way. This is not a Trent
- 2:48Speaker 1: Dilfer situation, and yet somehow we're still disrespecting Sam Darnold.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's weird to me, that's all.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, he didn't make the mistake, and he made the
- 2:56Speaker 3: throws that he needed to make, and he did what
- 2:58Speaker 3: he had to do. Going into tonight, I mean, A.J.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Brown was on one of the best teams in the NFL,
- 3:06Speaker 3: and he demanded out. And He got his wish and
- 3:10Speaker 3: he went to the Patriots. So one of the things
- 3:12Speaker 3: I'm going to be looking for is I'm curious how
- 3:15Speaker 3: much they're going to spoon feed. How much is Drake
- 3:17Speaker 3: May going to give A.J. Brown what he coveted so
- 3:21Speaker 3: much in Philadelphia from Jalen Hurts and never got, which
- 3:24Speaker 3: is always throw me the ball. He always wants the ball.
- 3:28Speaker 3: He wants his numbers. He wants his stats. He wants
- 3:30Speaker 3: his offense to run through him. And I'll be curious
- 3:33Speaker 3: to see if Drake May will be able to oblige
- 3:36Speaker 3: at least early on and against one of the better
- 3:39Speaker 3: defenses in the NFL. I want to know if he's
- 3:43Speaker 3: going to get the targets that he so craves.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Drake May shouldn't have to be thinking about that. You
- 3:49Speaker 1: want it to come naturally. You don't want it to
- 3:51Speaker 1: be forced. It seems like you're concerned about that. Like, hey,
- 3:53Speaker 1: we need to spoon feed A.J. Brown. He came here
- 3:56Speaker 1: not to win. He's already won. He came here for
- 4:00Speaker 1: 10 catches, 154 yards, and two touchdowns, and he doesn't
- 4:03Speaker 1: care if they lose 34 to 31. He doesn't matter
- 4:06Speaker 1: to him.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And I'll be curious if Mike McDonald is going to
- 4:10Speaker 3: draw something up with his defense to go, we know
- 4:12Speaker 3: they're going to try and get him the ball because
- 4:15Speaker 3: that's why he went there, and we're going to try
- 4:17Speaker 3: and bait them into trying to throw this, and we're
- 4:20Speaker 3: going to pick it off. We're going to do something
- 4:22Speaker 3: to make sure that, The more they try and feed
- 4:27Speaker 3: him the ball, the worse the game is going to
- 4:29Speaker 3: go for them.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yes, that is going to be interesting. Do you think A.J.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Brown would prefer 10 catches, 154, two touchdowns, and a
- 4:37Speaker 1: three-point loss, or two catches, 27 yards, no touchdowns, Patriots
- 4:43Speaker 1: by 10?
- 4:45Speaker 3: I think he answered that question. I mean, I guess
- 4:49Speaker 3: when you already have won a Super Bowl that it
- 4:51Speaker 3: doesn't matter, but he kind of answered that question because
- 4:54Speaker 3: he was on the team that was winning. They were
- 4:58Speaker 3: rolling teams in the Eagles, and they were the– The
- 5:02Speaker 3: Eagles going into last year were the prohibitive favorites. And
- 5:04Speaker 3: they're still one of the best teams in the NFL.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And he wanted out. And he didn't want out because
- 5:09Speaker 3: they couldn't win. He didn't want out because he hated
- 5:13Speaker 3: the coach. He wanted out because he wasn't getting his numbers.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:17Speaker 1: What I trust is Mike Vrabel's knowledge of this particular player,
- 5:21Speaker 1: having coached him in Tennessee. I think A.J. respects Vrabel.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I think Vrabel respects what it is A.J. is all about.
- 5:28Speaker 1: That's the only thing, Mikey. I agree with everything you're saying.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You don't want May to be forcing it to him.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You don't want to be thinking about that kind of stuff.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But I trust Rabel. If Rabel went out on a
- 5:38Speaker 1: limb for A.J. Brown to bring him into a team
- 5:40Speaker 1: that already made it to the Super Bowl, he must
- 5:42Speaker 1: think pretty highly of A.J. Brown. I have to trust
- 5:45Speaker 1: him as a coach. I don't need to trust him
- 5:46Speaker 1: as a human being, but as a coach, I need
- 5:48Speaker 1: to trust him.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And I think that trust will buy A.J. Brown a
- 5:52Speaker 3: few games, which again is why I'm curious to see
- 5:54Speaker 3: how it goes tonight. But at some point, If A.J.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Brown isn't getting his numbers, I'm not saying they have
- 6:00Speaker 3: to be tonight because, again, top level defense, first game together.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I get that.
- 6:06Speaker 3: But at some point, if A.J. Brown isn't getting his numbers,
- 6:09Speaker 3: whatever whatever Rabel has won't mean anything.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Well, Rabel has to wrangle that in. He does. If
- 6:17Speaker 1: indeed we arrive at that point where the Patriots are
- 6:19Speaker 1: four and one, but A.J. Brown is not putting up
- 6:20Speaker 1: numbers again. which seems improbable based on the fact that
- 6:25Speaker 1: he has a young quarterback at Drake may. And he's
- 6:27Speaker 1: the number one rod. Like there's no Devante Smith there.
- 6:29Speaker 1: There's no one else there. Right.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He's the clear number one. If you had to take
- 6:34Speaker 1: the game tonight, who you take it? I, I, I
- 6:36Speaker 1: like Seattle. I do. Mine is three and a half
- 6:39Speaker 1: at home, hanging a banner, tough place to play. uh, God,
- 6:43Speaker 1: the NFL has started tough place to play hanging a banner.
- 6:46Speaker 1: This is so exciting. I like the Seahawks tonight. I
- 6:49Speaker 1: think the Patriots are going to be good. I just
- 6:50Speaker 1: like the Seahawks tonight.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I like the Seahawks. I, I, I think the Patriots
- 6:55Speaker 3: are going to come back down to earth a little
- 6:57Speaker 3: bit from the massive step. Remember that last year, the
- 7:00Speaker 3: Patriots were, were a year or two ahead. I think
- 7:03Speaker 3: they're going to come back down a little bit and, and,
- 7:05Speaker 3: and I just trust Seattle's defense so much, and I
- 7:10Speaker 3: think Sam Darnold has found his groove in what he's
- 7:13Speaker 3: supposed to do, what his role is, and I just
- 7:16Speaker 3: think Seattle does it. I'll take the Seahawks minus three
- 7:19Speaker 3: and a half.
- 7:20Speaker 1: One of the handful of guys you want to speak
- 7:22Speaker 1: to headed into opening night of an NFL season is
- 7:26Speaker 1: Jerome Bettis. The boss. The boss joins us next. Very
- 7:41Speaker 1: excited about this. Jerome Bettis, Super Bowl champion, Walter Payton
- 7:45Speaker 1: Man of the Year, six-time Pro Bowler. He is joining
- 7:48Speaker 1: us on behalf of Pepsi with college football and the
- 7:51Speaker 1: NFL right around the corner. Jerome, thank you for doing this.
- 7:53Speaker 1: What are you doing with Pepsi?
- 7:58Speaker 5: I'm having an incredible time with Pepsi. I'm an official
- 8:02Speaker 5: game day ref, and I'm really refereeing all of those
- 8:07Speaker 5: really bad and poor tailgates I'm trying to make sure
- 8:15Speaker 5: all the tailgates, they have the right game day food
- 8:20Speaker 5: because they deserve the bold taste of Pepsi. So I'm
- 8:24Speaker 5: throwing flags on any of these tailgates that aren't correctly.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Using the right cola.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Which is Pepsi. Yes. Okay. So I love this. You
- 8:39Speaker 1: are walking across NFL stadiums, parking lots, and you're checking
- 8:42Speaker 1: out tailgate parties. And if they're not doing it correctly,
- 8:45Speaker 1: according to Jerome Bettis, you're going to throw a flag
- 8:48Speaker 1: at him, right?
- 8:49Speaker 5: I'm, I'm throwing flags and, and you know, it's one
- 8:52Speaker 5: of those, you gotta let them know, Hey, No Pepsi?
- 8:55Speaker 2: That's a flavor file. I'm telling you. Yes. I'm throwing
- 8:59Speaker 2: it back.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Are you wearing a Zebra's jersey? Like, what are you
- 9:02Speaker 1: doing here? Are you really sinking in?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 9:04Speaker 1: You are.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I am Zebra'd out.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Oh, I love it. So, really, they just have to
- 9:10Speaker 1: have Pepsi, though. That's it. Then they get a good grade.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You move on to the next one, right? And if
- 9:14Speaker 1: they don't have Pepsi, you'll make sure they do have Pepsi, right?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Absolutely. That's a file. That is a file.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I love it. It's such a fun idea. You officiating
- 9:26Speaker 1: tailgate parties is actually an outstanding idea by Pepsi. Jerome,
- 9:31Speaker 1: we'll get back to that in a second. We'll talk
- 9:33Speaker 1: about it and promote it again here on the way out.
- 9:36Speaker 1: But I am wondering here, last week we were having
- 9:38Speaker 1: a conversation. We do a thing around here. It's Think
- 9:42Speaker 1: About It Thursday. And so we were talking about if
- 9:44Speaker 1: you can only have one utensil for the remainder of time,
- 9:48Speaker 1: a fork, a spoon, or a knife, which one are
- 9:51Speaker 1: you going with? He likes this question.
- 9:54Speaker 5: That's the real man. you got me thinking. I'm taking
- 9:57Speaker 5: my glass up. I would say the knife.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Wow, a knife. Really? Wow.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Because the knife, I can... The knife can act like
- 10:09Speaker 5: a fork, but the fork can't act like a knife.
- 10:14Speaker 4: And the spoon is just ridiculous of a choice.
- 10:16Speaker 2: The spoon... The spoon.
- 10:19Speaker 5: That's the extra. The spoon is just extra. I mean,
- 10:22Speaker 5: you know, that's the bonus is a spoon. I mean,
- 10:26Speaker 5: because ultimately, if you got a scoop, you can scoop
- 10:29Speaker 5: with your hand.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, well, of course.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But the spoon is a bonus. That's a bonus utensil. Right.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It's about fork, knife, I think, ultimately.
- 10:37Speaker 5: And I think because you could do so much and
- 10:40Speaker 5: you need so much with the knife, you got to
- 10:42Speaker 5: have it because the fork, it's only doing so much.
- 10:47Speaker 5: The knife is going to be across the board. You're
- 10:49Speaker 5: going to use that in your life skills in terms
- 10:52Speaker 5: of cutting down something to create a fire. You can't
- 10:56Speaker 5: do that with a fork. That's why I'm going with
- 10:59Speaker 5: the knife.
- 11:00Speaker 1: So you're willing to forgo soup. Well, you'll drink soup
- 11:03Speaker 1: right out of the bowl, right?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Scoop it, scoop it.
- 11:08Speaker 1: With your hand?
- 11:10Speaker 2: Scoop and score, baby. Scoop and score if you have to.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And how are you going to navigate ice cream with
- 11:17Speaker 1: a knife?
- 11:17Speaker 2: Listen, listen.
- 11:19Speaker 5: If I'm in bad shape, the last thing I'm thinking
- 11:21Speaker 5: about is ice cream.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yes. And you better believe. Yes. You see my body type.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I'm not a big soup guy. So that's not on
- 11:31Speaker 2: the menu very often.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Totally fair. I'm sorry. I'm hesitant to ask you football
- 11:36Speaker 1: questions because I'm not certain we'll get a better response
- 11:38Speaker 1: than the one we just got to that question.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I am a meat, potato, and Pepsi guy.
- 11:44Speaker 1: That's it.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So the mashed potatoes just right on the knife and
- 11:47Speaker 1: just boom, right in your mouth, right?
- 11:49Speaker 2: That's it. Boom, bam, boom, bam.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Boom, bam. The bus is with us. He's so great.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Where are you sitting right now? That is a really
- 11:57Speaker 1: nice room, man.
- 11:58Speaker 5: I am in my man cave downstairs in the house.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I used to be in my office, but this is
- 12:06Speaker 5: a little bit more visually stimulating, if you will. So
- 12:10Speaker 5: it's a good time. And then what you don't see
- 12:13Speaker 5: is the front of the, let me see if I
- 12:16Speaker 5: can turn the front of it. You can see I
- 12:20Speaker 5: got the golf simulator up front, so I'll have a
- 12:23Speaker 5: good time with it.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Wow. How's the golf game?
- 12:26Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 12:28Speaker 5: I'm going through a swing change, so it's some rough
- 12:32Speaker 5: days right now, but good days and bad days.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So I'm playing well, though.
- 12:36Speaker 1: All right, I'm thinking eventually, if you're okay with it,
- 12:38Speaker 1: me and Taylor, we come up to the man cave
- 12:40Speaker 1: there just with knives, okay? And we just have a day, okay?
- 12:43Speaker 1: What do you think? You're good?
- 12:45Speaker 2: Knives only. That's it. And Pepsi. And Pepsi.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Of course.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Leave the soup at the front door.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yes, and I'll bring the Pepsi, okay? I promise you.
- 12:54Speaker 1: That's right.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Okay.
- 12:54Speaker 2: That's right.
- 12:54Speaker 1: All right, go ahead, Taylor.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Jerome, you are a Notre Dame legend. Your son's a
- 12:59Speaker 4: sophomore now at Notre Dame. When he was going through
- 13:02Speaker 4: his recruitment process, if he came to you and said, Dad,
- 13:05Speaker 4: I'm thinking about going to USC. What would that conversation
- 13:09Speaker 4: have been like?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Mike Norvell was on with us recently. We asked him
- 13:12Speaker 1: the same question about his kids. He said his kids
- 13:14Speaker 1: know better than to ask him about the University of
- 13:16Speaker 1: Miami or the University of Florida.
- 13:21Speaker 2: So it was one of those.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Times where what I didn't want to do was I
- 13:29Speaker 5: didn't want to be overly pushy about Notre Dame.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I wanted him.
- 13:33Speaker 5: To come to his own conclusion, ultimately, because my philosophy was,
- 13:38Speaker 5: you got to spend, you know, four years there. And
- 13:40Speaker 5: if you don't like it, you're going to always, hey,
- 13:43Speaker 5: if dad made me go there, dad, no, I want
- 13:48Speaker 5: this to be your decision. So I was very conscious
- 13:51Speaker 5: of not over-hyping Notre Dame, but I did want to
- 13:56Speaker 5: explain the true benefits that it's not only the football
- 14:02Speaker 5: that you gained from going to university. But the, the biggest,
- 14:06Speaker 5: the biggest sales job for me, it wasn't me saying
- 14:12Speaker 5: a word.
- 14:13Speaker 2: His older sister, his big sister.
- 14:16Speaker 5: And her, his best friend, she decided to go to
- 14:20Speaker 5: Notre Dame over USC.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:22Speaker 5: And that is what saved the day because she almost,
- 14:26Speaker 5: it was, she, USC was one for her. So I was,
- 14:29Speaker 5: I was, this was a real situation for me. It wasn't,
- 14:33Speaker 5: The one thing I did tell her, though, I admit,
- 14:35Speaker 5: I told her, you can go to USC, but I'm
- 14:38Speaker 5: not writing a check.
- 14:39Speaker 2: To the University of Southern California.
- 14:41Speaker 1: You have to get that.
- 14:44Speaker 5: I said, my name is not going to be anywhere around.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Your mother's going to pay for everything.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You can't even write it out. You don't want to
- 14:55Speaker 1: give your money to that institution. I understand it.
- 14:57Speaker 5: I don't want them with anything with USC and my
- 15:00Speaker 5: name on it.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Period.
- 15:04Speaker 1: All right, Jerome. We'll get you out of here in
- 15:05Speaker 1: just a second. Wondering here, were you surprised that Mike
- 15:09Speaker 1: Tomlin finally walked away from the Pittsburgh Steelers?
- 15:12Speaker 5: You know, I was with the timing of it, but
- 15:17Speaker 5: I wasn't surprised ultimately because obviously this game is so
- 15:22Speaker 5: much pressure and it's so much, and I really felt
- 15:26Speaker 5: the end of his career, he didn't necessarily get a
- 15:29Speaker 5: full buy-in from the team in terms of the organization
- 15:35Speaker 5: because he never really had the weapons that he really needed.
- 15:41Speaker 5: I mean, you look at what they did this year
- 15:42Speaker 5: in the offseason, right? They go out, they get a
- 15:45Speaker 5: wide receiver, they get a running back, they draft another
- 15:48Speaker 5: wide receiver. They're doing all these things to upgrade the offense,
- 15:52Speaker 5: and they didn't do any of those things the last
- 15:56Speaker 5: two or three years of Coach Tomlin's tenure. So I
- 16:00Speaker 5: just think it was time for him to move on
- 16:03Speaker 5: in time for the organization to have another voice.
- 16:06Speaker 1: All right, let's get you out of here one more time.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Tell everyone what you're doing. This is one of the
- 16:09Speaker 1: great ideas, promotional ideas I've heard. Tell everyone one more
- 16:12Speaker 1: time what you're doing with Pepsi here.
- 16:14Speaker 5: I am an official game day referee. And I'm refereeing
- 16:19Speaker 5: tailgates that do not, I'm throwing flags to any tailgate
- 16:23Speaker 5: party that does not include Pepsi. You got to have
- 16:26Speaker 5: the bold taste of Pepsi at every tailgate party.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I'm watching.
- 16:32Speaker 1: All right. The boss just said he's watching you people.
- 16:37Speaker 1: We appreciate you doing this, man. I can't have you
- 16:39Speaker 1: around here enough. You are great. Thank you for doing this.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Good luck to your son. Better luck to your daughter.
- 16:47Speaker 5: She's a senior at Notre Dame. She's about to finish.
- 16:50Speaker 5: And I'm so happy. I'm about to stop writing checks
