- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Good morning, everybody! Uh, it is time for a Christmas special, holiday episode, holiday special, Bards and Barrels.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, I hope you're not thinking this is gonna be like the Charlie Brown special.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: It's not gonna be quite that heartwarming, but we'll do our best.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: So, how are we doing this Christmas, boys?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: It could be very heartwarming.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: What are you talking about?
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: When we want to.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: His beer might be heartwarming.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: So, okay, so here's here's what we're gonna do tonight because Brett Brett's already ooing there over one of the things.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're we're kind of combining all of our things into this episode for everybody just as a as a special.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: We're going to uh create Santa Claus tonight, uh, a good old Chris Kringle for everybody to play.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: We're gonna talk about some traditions in Fey Rune that are very similar to Christmas.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do a Christmas beer, which is uh Brett has dipped into apparently already.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Is it good?
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's pretty good.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: It's kind of potent.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: But we're pulling out a seven and a half percent on Christmas, so you know if you're season, if you're not feeling the family today, maybe you should have this beer.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: So so pay attention to what we got here.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then um we're gonna talk a little bit about uh a giveaway that we're gonna do today as well on our Facebook page.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: So we'll start there.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Um the details are on the Facebook post or the Instagram post, but we are giving away um a big and little barbs and barrels sticker plus some coasters that we have.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll try to post a picture in the comments for everybody to see.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: But if you like and share the post on either Facebook or Instagram, you will be entered to win that.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Uh and then we'll message you and get your information uh from the winners so we can send that out.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: You'll get a nice little certificate and stuff from us.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is the one time we autograph things.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: So you if you want one of the early autographs, if we ever get famous or something, there you go.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: It might be worth money someday.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we're gonna kick off this Christmas special with uh building good old Kris Kringle.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Brett, you want to kick us off here?
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: So we're running through DD Beyond, so they're gonna walk us through it.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: First off, the name Santa Claus.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, wait, do we want to do Santa?
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Do we want to do Kris Kringle?
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Do we want to go bubble Gijgel?
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, which one do you want to go?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Oh man, that 7%'s kicking in already.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: At that exact moment, the scene popped into Philip and I's head in same wavelength.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: You have to.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Kris Kringle, Pair Noel.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Pablo Gijgel.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Well, Merry Christmas, everybody.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: That's it for this episode.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: We'll see you next year.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, I I don't know.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Santa Claus is fine.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Kris Kringle, I think one of those two probably fits the bill.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: And then a race.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: What do we want to do?
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: I think he's gotta be an elf.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Human?
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Elf?
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Ooh, why not both?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Half of elf.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Half elf?
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Uh with a half elf.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Half half, half rough.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Half elf.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Half rough.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Uh we get to pick two ability scores to start off with.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, what do we want to increase?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: By two.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: You're sorry.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Charisma increases by two, and we get to pick an additional two skills to increase by one.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Charisma fits great.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: That's nice.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Slide hand.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Well, no, skill ability.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Skills, ability.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Ability scores down.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: So dexterity?
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Dexterity.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Um.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: How about some constitution?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's gonna be eating a lot of cookies all night.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, I can't drink a lot of milk.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: I think that makes a lot of sense.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Is he lactose intolerant?
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, if that's the case, he's taking some crabs by the third house of the night.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Watch your stockings.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: No.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Man, stockings full this year.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Did you get cold?
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: No.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Got a stocking full of shpeep.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Hey, this is a good one.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: He also gets dark vision.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: That's gonna come in handy.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And then Faye Antrus.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I can't even talk tonight.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Faye Ancestry.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Uh skill versatility.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: So gain proficiency in two skills.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Animal handling.
- 5:04unknown: Oh, yeah.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Gotta handle the reindeer.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And maybe stealth.
- 5:09unknown: Yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Gotta get in and out of the houses.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And then an additional language, which he's already got common and elvish, so he's pretty much good.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Anything else?
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Celestial.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe reindeer.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Can you type in custom languages?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Sylvan?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Hey, common.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Alright, oh, there's the big one.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Class.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: I think Santa's gotta be a rogue, right?
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Uh maybe.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, he could be he could be like a wizard.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Does he like study magic though?
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I feel like if anything, he's almost like a wild magic sorcerer if he's gonna be magic.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Potentially that too.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I could see the rogue though.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I think he fits more with rogue.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Like he just doesn't, he's not a stereotypical rogue, but he needs a lot of those rogue-ish.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Sneaky sneaky abilities.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: It is kind of uh uh funny to think of some of the other classes.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Like, hmm, Santa as the barbarian.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: I don't want oatmeal raisin cookies.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: There's no chip next.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Okay, rogue.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: We got it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Uh oh my goodness.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: More proficiencies.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Oh all right.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Uh so we've got sleight of hand, acrobatics, athletics, deception, intimidation, investigation, persuasion, performance, insight.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Well, that's so many choices.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: I feel like we need a sleight of hand for the gifts.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Uh performance?
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: I think that's fine.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's got a lot of mall appearances.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: That's what I was thinking.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Like, he's got to keep the kids happy.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: How would you like to be his booking agent?
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: That'd be awful.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: He's got the list.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: So we need some skills to be able to know if a kid's naughty or nice.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: So what would that be?
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Um, it's either gonna be like probably perception or maybe insight.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: We've got two spots.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Take them both?
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: I take them both, yeah.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Uh oh my goodness.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: More more skills.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, then he gets expertise in something that we've already picked.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Stealth.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, stealth.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: And then animal handling?
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think, well, yeah.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: It's it's either animal handling or that's half of his job is flying the sleigh.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Fair.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Animal handling.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: He's got a sneak attack as a rogue.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Definitely gonna come in handy.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: It's necessary.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then thieves can't.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, ability scores.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, let's roll.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Let's roll for him.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Let's roll.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, I have four dice.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I'll roll for the first one if we just want to keep passing around.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Does that work?
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Go for it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: I'll put him in.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: You guys roll for it.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: Are we okay?
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: So are we taking whatever I have, or are we gonna see how bad we're just gonna take it?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is your strength roll.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, we don't have to do that.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna go.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: If this is crappy, that's okay.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: We're not going that hard.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: I rolled one, one, two, three.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: That was a practice roll.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's do it again.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Or we can give Santa that.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Those were cold dice.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: What's the what's Santa's dump skill?
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Strength?
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Better.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: 6-6-2-4.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: But he's got to carry the whole sack of toys.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Magic, maybe.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Does he have magic?
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: No, he's a rogue.
- 8:35unknown: Ooh.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Santa needs a feat.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Santa needs a feat.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, so our first score is gonna be a 16.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Ooh, that's pretty good.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Pulled out a 6-6-4 on that one.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, what does he need?
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Dexterity?
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: 17.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, do we go ahead and put that at decks?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Wait.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Write these down, Russell.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: You're up, you got the paper.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: I'll put him in once we've decided where they're 16, 17.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, I see lots of sixes over there.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Ooh, boy.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: That would be another 16.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Santa's stacked.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: This is the character you want to use.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: We'll be putting this character up on Facebook as well.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: If you want to play a Santa in your next one-shot or maybe a full campaign of Santa.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Get those dice out of your bike.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Hey, bells.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Phil, can you give me some bells?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I hope you rolled once.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: I did roll two ones.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Eleven.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: You gotta have a bad one in there somewhere.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say if we roll all like 16s or higher, we're gonna take that first one.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: We're going back to that.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Seven.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Ooh boy.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Speaking of dump stat.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Well, so here's our final one.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Santa's wisdom just took a hit.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: That would be an eight.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Okay, so what are we dumping first?
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Seven and eight.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Well, we said we need a constitution, so we can't dump constitution.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: We gotta have decks.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: And he's gotta be charismatic.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: There's our three high scores, so the others are your dubs.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Intelligence by wisdom.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Hopefully we didn't need yeah, yeah.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: I would say wisdom's the highest of the three.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we'll put seven eight as strength, seven for intelligence.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Santa.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Eleven for wisdom.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: And then, okay, so we have decks, constitution, and charisma left.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: I think you gotta put 17 as decks.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Dex as highest.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And then the others are sixteens.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Santa is stacked.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I can go that far, but he's Santa's not the brightest bulb of the box.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: He's not our Santa.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: You're yellowing it.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: You gotta go with the dice.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Um, background.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: We need something like um Sword Coast Adventures Guide had something I feel like that would fit.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Um, what's it called?
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, here's a good one.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Uh this might be the one you're thinking of.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Clan Crafter.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, actually, I think that sounds right.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Uh so that is one.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my, this this kind of fits well.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Uh you labored for years um under a dwarf master of the craft, um, gaining the fine skills you possess today.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Uh you are most like a a dwarf, but not necessarily, particularly in the north.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: I think that fits.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: And it's heavily focused on uh crafting and skills and that sort of thing.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: So making toys.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: That's perfect.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: That is exactly the one I was looking at too.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I just checked.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: So another skill proficiency we have to pick.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: This how many skill proficiencies have we picked for this?
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: It's Santa.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: He's a skillful one.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, gotta make up for those.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: But these are different ones.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: So acrobatics, arcana, athletics, deception, intimidation, investigation, medicine, nature, persuasion, religion, or survival one more time.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: I feel like he's gotta have some sign of sort of like arcana or something like that.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: He needs to know something about magic.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, right?
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't really have anything in that world yet.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then tool proficiencies.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: There's a lot that could fit here.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, woodworking probably would make the most sense.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Like woodworker's tools, car yeah, carving okay carving toys and stuff.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: I think that that fits.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then we will add uh before if you want to play with this, we'll add in all of the wonderful flavor text of his background, his his height, weight.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Santa.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: All those details.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: If you want to play with him in one of your campaigns.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Everybody wants to play with Santa.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Heck yeah.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: I would play Santa.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: That'd be awesome.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Especially if you gave me eight tiny eight tiny reindeer.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Ooh, ooh.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Equipment.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I forgot this one.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, we gotta have equipment.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: So, do you want to go with equipment or gold?
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Equipment.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Uh ooh.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: We have to go with the burglars back, right?
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yes.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Ball bearings, you never know.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, do we want a short sword or a short bow?
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: If we can take both, I think you would.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Actually, you can take you can you can take both.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: So take one of each.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: I don't know about the oh oh.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: So I think his sword has to be a candy cane, right?
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: I like oh, and the bow?
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Do you guys ever have one of those like little plastic bows that shoots the sticky darts?
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: That's definitely what the bow is.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: It's for the dogs.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: That's it's all you use it for, is a 1d6 of plunging.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: Alright, so we'll finish filling out the details on that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: We will post that on the Facebook page.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: So there's gonna be the picture of the giveaway.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: There's going to be the PDF of our uh Santa Claus character that you can play today.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Actually, if you do play today in in a uh home match somewhere, please, please, please, please, please let us know because that would be that would be excellent.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Okay, moving on from our character creation.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Guys, let's just have a little open conversation about what the holidays.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Obviously, they're not going to be Christmas, but what do the holidays look like in Faroon?
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Well, for which like for any race in particular, or just uh like I don't know.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I would guess very similar to us, they probably have some sort of harvest celebration regardless of race and religion.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Um probably thinking like what's the difference between a bugbear celebration and like a high elf celebration, you know?
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: I think those are pretty different.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Let's let's well the elves are busy, they're making toys.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Had to go way up north.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Those are the northern elves.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: To the always winter, not the never winter.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Game go.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Uh this is the season for bards.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: They just go around town to town singing and uh caroling seasons.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: They are so right.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: On the side of every damn rogue.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Or every damn rogue, every damn road, road, not rogue.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Bard singing off the side.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Singing.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: There's a bard.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Every city square has a little podium set up, and there's like four of them lined up in a row.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Trabadours.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: It's it's kind of it's kind of like how the uh the salvation army shows up at like every Walmart ringing the bell.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Except in Feyroom, there's a bard in every town square everywhere, and they don't ring a bell, they just sing all damn day.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Which is okay.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: No, but there is somebody standing there ringing a bell.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: It's the rogue.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: It's a long con.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: It's been your pennies.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: It's a long play.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Long play for the rogue, yeah.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Uh so do we think this this would like it?
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: It's probably not gonna be harvest because it's gonna be more winter.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: So maybe it's like a solstice festival or something like that.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Might make some sense.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, I mean, if we're thinking of like early origins of Christmas, it's it's around the pagan holidays that were that were the solstice holidays.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: So it's like short nights, dark time of year.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: It's like the festivals that surrounded that.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: So I think that would be very similar for uh the inhabitants here.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Maybe it'd be like a celebration of light, because days are short or something like that.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: So a lot of your your temples for your deities and stuff, like light candles, and maybe there's like lots of floating candles this time of year around the temples and stuff like that.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: I could see like the halflings, halflings or buttons, potentially the elves too, like having some sort of celebration of uh the seasons, the change of seasons too.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: I was I don't know why, but I get kind of nostalgic thinking about like Feirune during winter, like like soft falling snow, like everything's just so quiet by like candle and lantern light.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: It's just there's something about that that just makes me feel all warm and cozy inside.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Until like, you know, the troll walks through the room.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like you're watching the snow cascade over a hill until a hill troll comes over the top with a giant ass club.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Rolling a shape.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I I think that's pretty good though for that.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Any other thoughts before we before we move on?
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Hopefully that gives everybody a little picturesque Norman Rockwell-ish.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Do they exchange gifts in Faroon?
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you just don't accept anything from the bard, though.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: That just seems like a bad idea.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Something he found on the side of the road.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: Found or solstice.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: The bard's definitely re-gifting something.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Every white elephant gift he's ever gotten.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, yes.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Okay, so let's move on from that to something a little closer to home.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you don't listen to our bonus episodes, the opening crack, this is gonna be a little new to you, but uh, we do have a beer that we're gonna talk about.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Phil, you want to intro this beer that you brought?
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so today we are drinking a beer by New Belgium.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: This is called the Holiday Ale.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, flavors of cranberry and spice and everything nice.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and they are brewed or based in trying to read my can here.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Uh Fort Collins, Colorado, and yeah, New Belgian brewing company, Fort Collins, Colorado.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Another Colorado beer.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Didn't do that on purpose.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but the can is pretty neat.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: So it says a limited edition beer comes out this time of year.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Uh it has a nice ornament on the can, uh, red can, uh, green foliage.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Um what we say earlier, 7.5 something.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: 7.5.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: That's right, right next to ale.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: 7.5%.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: I do I do find this interesting.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: So uh on the the website they go into the flavors a little bit more where they say it's cranberry, orange, cinnamon, and spices.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Um when we talked about pale ales and IPAs on the opening crack, we we talk a lot about how they taste like grapefruit, but it's it's like citrus tasting, typically leaning toward grapefruit.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: This is the first uh orange I have tasted in a beer that we've had so far.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: And I'm sure that was very intentional because it's it's a common like mulling ingredient, but it's like it works so well, it's really good.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: It definitely tastes different than all of the other ale style ones we've drank so far.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely, yes.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: I like this one.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: I love the cranberry in it too.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it adds a little brightness, doesn't it?
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: It's like it's like it's not too much.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: You can see you still get beer flavor in it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't I don't know if it's like a a wheat beer base or if it's a little darker than that, but it's like the beer's there and it has these nice like layered tones over the top, which is very interesting.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: I love too, like as you go to drink it, you get just like a hint of the smell of the cinnamon, too.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Like it's not super overpowering, it doesn't taste like you're chewing cinnamon, but it just has that like nice little note on the on the nose.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: I do I do really like this beer.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: This is definitely one though that you need to have when it's cold.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Like this would not be good in the summer.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: I think I think those molline spices make it feel too warm for summer.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: That just I cinnamon during the summer just doesn't sound good to me anyway.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: But I I think you're absolutely right.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean I'm sure they have the problem like every brewery has where December 26th, this one doesn't sell at all.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: Selling it for a while after December 26th.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: But since you're hearing about it on December 25th, uh Hey, it might be on sale.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: It might be on sale.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: So I would encourage you to go grab some and have some for New Year's because it is holiday ale, it's not Christmas ale.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Uh so definitely go grab some.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: If you want to check out the uh uh just their webpage that talks a little bit about this, you can go to newbelgium.com slash beer slash holiday dash ale, or just go to New Belgium's website, newbelgium.com.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: You can make your way there.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: You know, or Google it like a normal person.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Or Google it like that too.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: No, I like to give direct links.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Any other thoughts?
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, we so during the opening crack we do CRs.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: To say where this is at.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: Um by CR we mean challenge rating.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: Uh low end of our challenge rating scales like cream ales, domestics, things like that.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: High end at a CR20 is gonna be like uh double IPAs, Imperial styles, things like that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: So, guys, where does this bad boy fall?
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: This is a hard one.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Like it's not it's a harder beer to drink, but not in the way of like it's not bitter, it's not super.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: No, it's just so flavorful that it's like it's a punch you in the face beer with flavor.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: And it could sneak up on you too, ABV wise if you're not.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Oh yes, two or three of these.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Woo-hoo-hoo.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Uncle Ken is having some fun at Christmas today.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Cousin Eddie.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: That's probably a better round.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: Cousin Eddie, that one.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking upper mid, like 14.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: I was right around 1213, so that makes sense.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Gosh, for once, I'm gonna I'm lower than that.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go like a seven.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: I I I mean, if you're cool with holiday spices, there's nothing offending about the beer part of this.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: So I think if you're if you're open to trying something, I I think I think people would be okay with this.
- 23:26unknown: Yeah.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: If you if you like eating uh ginger snaps, oh yeah, that's a good like I taste that you probably would like this beer.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: If you like ginger snaps and beer, this is a good one.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, excellent beer.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, so the other tradition that we have uh in the opening crack is uh where do we find this beer in Fey Rune, guys?
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: I I think there is a slightly shady place somewhere north of Neverwinter called the North Pole that has this on tap, ready to rock and roll.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: I don't know what they call it.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Ginger's snap.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: She's the bartender at the North Pole.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Bartender, sure.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm going polar opposite.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Um, I think this is gonna be at a a little like pub and grub type of place where the little old lady in the back has been baking cookies for way too many years and is just like immune to all these spices, and just says, like, I want to make a beer.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: And so she dumps all the spices she normally does, and this is what came out is is a Christmas cookie beer.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Also called ginger snap.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think that uh this is brewed actually at the not the North Pole that uh Ross is speaking of, but the true North Pole.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: So uh Santa and Mrs.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Claus get this ready each year for the elves that are working on the toys.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: And uh they do serve it at a um maybe unsavory establishment called uh Naughty and Nice in the North Pole.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Naughty and Nice opens up immediately after Santa flies off in his sleigh.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Free drinks all night for the elves.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: This has been a long, hard season.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Okay, so uh Yeah, you had to say it, didn't you?
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: What?
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: A long hard season.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: You can play it back later.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, baby.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: All right, that's gonna do it for this episode of Bards and Barrels.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: From our family to yours, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy holidays.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Merry Christmas!
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Merry Christmas, everybody.
