- 0:03Speaker 1: All right, five past the hour, third hour of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: morning Show with Rustin Scott Busy Monday morning here on
- 0:08Speaker 1: the radio program. As we are now into the month
- 0:11Speaker 1: of November, and thank goodness we are here, and we
- 0:15Speaker 1: are joined by the managing editor at war chant dot com.
- 0:18Speaker 1: He is Iras Chaffell.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Ira.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Boy, October, what a horrible month of football it was,
- 0:27Speaker 1: but we have something to celebrate.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, they're calling it a new November, and price price
- 0:33Speaker 2: smart too. I'll latch onto the month of November because, yeah,
- 0:37Speaker 2: as you said, the month of October, some new Flordnesday
- 0:39Speaker 2: football team probably wants to forget about. We'll see if
- 0:42Speaker 2: it's totally in our rearview mirror, probably in these next
- 0:45Speaker 2: couple of weeks, but for at least one Saturday, we
- 0:47Speaker 2: can block that out of our minds.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Let's before we get into maybe a little bit more
- 0:52Speaker 1: of the microview macroview, what did you see Saturday night?
- 1:00Speaker 2: You know, I think the you know, the the big
- 1:02Speaker 2: question last week since the Stanford game, because there were
- 1:05Speaker 2: some reports that the players had checked out on Mike Norvel,
- 1:08Speaker 2: that they were tuning him out. You know, that became
- 1:11Speaker 2: the big focus. I think for a lot of people
- 1:13Speaker 2: is okay, we'll see that you're at home against Wake Forest,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and you know, one of the things I told some
- 1:17Speaker 2: people during the week was, you know, it's one thing
- 1:19Speaker 2: to look bad in the middle of the night across
- 1:22Speaker 2: the country, but if you come back in your home
- 1:24Speaker 2: stadium on homecoming and look like you don't want to
- 1:26Speaker 2: be there, that's going to answer all the questions we
- 1:28Speaker 2: have about Mike Norvel. Well, the team answered them in
- 1:32Speaker 2: the affirmative that they still are together. For at least
- 1:35Speaker 2: a day, they still played hard. Mike Norvell and the
- 1:38Speaker 2: coaches say they had two great weeks of practice, So again,
- 1:41Speaker 2: that all flies in the face of the idea that
- 1:43Speaker 2: the team had checked out on him. That doesn't change
- 1:46Speaker 2: the fact that they did lose four games. It doesn't
- 1:49Speaker 2: change the fact that they may not be good enough
- 1:51Speaker 2: to beat an average Clemson team on the road this Saturday,
- 1:54Speaker 2: or beat a Florida team without its head coach, or
- 1:56Speaker 2: a Virginia Tech with team without a coach. So to me,
- 1:59Speaker 2: it just kind of put a pause on everything. The
- 2:02Speaker 2: big concern everybody had apparently is not true. The players
- 2:06Speaker 2: came out and spoke highly of Mike Norvel after the game,
- 2:08Speaker 2: they kind of rallied around him, and well, now we'll
- 2:11Speaker 2: see if that lasts. But you know, I don't think
- 2:13Speaker 2: it changed anything in terms of what the season has been.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Other than that concern, I think it has been a lead.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Is there anything that any of the individual players said
- 2:23Speaker 1: that you quoted in in some of your articles, Ira
- 2:26Speaker 1: in the wake of the game against Wake? Sorry, is
- 2:31Speaker 1: there anything that stands out, anything that surprised you?
- 2:35Speaker 2: The biggest one to me and I you know, and
- 2:37Speaker 2: a lot of it. You know, he loves us, we
- 2:40Speaker 2: love him, that kind of stuff. It's you know, it's
- 2:42Speaker 2: with every coach. Every player should think about their coach
- 2:45Speaker 2: if they like them and respect them, and a lot
- 2:47Speaker 2: of times they do. Even when coaches get fired. Even
- 2:49Speaker 2: when coaches should get fired, the players don't usually get
- 2:52Speaker 2: to vote. I thought one that kind of stuck out
- 2:54Speaker 2: to me was, you know, Tommy Caslano's talking about how
- 2:57Speaker 2: consistent Mike Norvel has and then I think are a
- 3:01Speaker 2: Little said the same thing as either are a Little
- 3:03Speaker 2: or Jabill Rawls. One of them said, listen, when we
- 3:05Speaker 2: were down, he was the guy that was kind of
- 3:08Speaker 2: trying to lift us up. He never gave up on us.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And that is one thing to think about because what
- 3:13Speaker 2: happens in these relationships with coaches and players. And I
- 3:15Speaker 2: think you saw it on the sideline Saturday at Clemson
- 3:18Speaker 2: where Dabo is screaming at his sideline, screaming at his players,
- 3:22Speaker 2: kind of embarrassing them, you know, listen. Well, it'll be
- 3:26Speaker 2: interesting to see how those players respond to that, because
- 3:28Speaker 2: what happened. Sometimes these coaches are making all this money,
- 3:31Speaker 2: sometimes they can turn it on the players and they
- 3:33Speaker 2: can roll the players, and the players see that, and
- 3:35Speaker 2: that's how you lose a team. The fact that they're
- 3:37Speaker 2: saying that even when they were down, Mike Norvel was
- 3:40Speaker 2: lifting them up. He believed in them. That could be
- 3:42Speaker 2: a powerful thing. Now we'll see the results are you know,
- 3:46Speaker 2: are to be determined. That I think that's where, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 2: for the people that felt like Florida State should have
- 3:51Speaker 2: fired Mike after Stanford, and I think there's some people
- 3:54Speaker 2: in the administration and some people some other people who
- 3:56Speaker 2: felt like, let's let's see how this plays out. You know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: we're still going to see how it plays out. That
- 4:01Speaker 2: game didn't change anything long term, but I do think
- 4:04Speaker 2: those comments and that approach might be worth watching.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Joining me Irischaffel from warchan dot com. He's the managing editor,
- 4:18Speaker 1: talking FSU football finally winning again after a very that
- 4:23Speaker 1: bad streak of four straight losses. You talked about the
- 4:28Speaker 1: Dabo Sweeney thing and that you beat me to the punch, Ira,
- 4:31Speaker 1: because man, you know, things have changed. Back when you
- 4:36Speaker 1: and I were younger and maybe playing sports, coaches could
- 4:39Speaker 1: get on players rather routinely and that was part of
- 4:43Speaker 1: being coached. Then it just gradually changed where you don't
- 4:48Speaker 1: embarrass them on the sidelines if you want to keep
- 4:50Speaker 1: them around, especially now in the portal. What is your
- 4:55Speaker 1: hunch about I mean, we're talking about two very different
- 4:59Speaker 1: approaches that Dabo Sweeney and Mike Norvell have taken with
- 5:02Speaker 1: their teams. What what do you think we're going to
- 5:05Speaker 1: see on Saturday?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great question, and I think we you know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: the answer is not to be determined. This is such
- 5:12Speaker 2: a whole new world, you know. And I had some
- 5:14Speaker 2: conversations with some people last week because you talked about
- 5:16Speaker 2: other coaching candidates that are out there and in different
- 5:19Speaker 2: styles and and and so you ask yourself, Okay, could
- 5:22Speaker 2: that guy work in this environment? Could that you know,
- 5:25Speaker 2: could could the way you coached. You know, Brian Kelly
- 5:27Speaker 2: just flames out at LSU and he's a guy that
- 5:31Speaker 2: had unbelievable success in Notre Dame, and we thought, if
- 5:33Speaker 2: you give him LSU's talent, I mean, they're going to
- 5:36Speaker 2: be unbelievable, and then instead it goes very average and
- 5:40Speaker 2: he ends up getting fired in the year four. So
- 5:43Speaker 2: I just think there are no sure things, and so
- 5:45Speaker 2: when you look at you know, how how to predict
- 5:47Speaker 2: what Florida Sat Clemson looked this week? I think if
- 5:49Speaker 2: Florida State gets off to a decent start, I feel
- 5:52Speaker 2: confident they'll play well. I feel confident they'll play hard,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and I think Clemson's defense, for whatever is wrong with them,
- 6:00Speaker 2: and it's apparently a lot wrong with them, I think
- 6:02Speaker 2: Florida State will score some points. What I don't know
- 6:04Speaker 2: about Florida State, and we have to see is when
- 6:07Speaker 2: things start going, if things go poorly on the road,
- 6:09Speaker 2: how are they going to play and how do they respond?
- 6:11Speaker 2: And that's the thing. You know, you go back to
- 6:12Speaker 2: the Alabama game, and my only concern about that game
- 6:15Speaker 2: was everything they needed to go well went well. And
- 6:18Speaker 2: so it's easy to play well when you're ahead and
- 6:21Speaker 2: you're controlling the game. That Wake Forest game was very
- 6:24Speaker 2: much the same. When Wake Forest had a couple of
- 6:26Speaker 2: chances to put FSU under pressure, they get a holding call,
- 6:29Speaker 2: they drop a pass, they miss an open receiver. So
- 6:32Speaker 2: nothing really went wrong in that game, and we see
- 6:34Speaker 2: that this is how this team can play if things
- 6:35Speaker 2: don't go wrong. What I don't know is if you
- 6:37Speaker 2: go to Clemson and things go poorly, you fumble early
- 6:40Speaker 2: like you did in some of those losses, or you
- 6:42Speaker 2: just have a costly mistake, how do you respond to that.
- 6:46Speaker 2: That's to me going to be telling, because that's where
- 6:48Speaker 2: this team has really struggled so far.
- 6:50Speaker 1: When I watched the game on Saturday night, IRA, what
- 6:53Speaker 1: occurred to me was early on, I had to remember
- 6:56Speaker 1: this team had seemed to have a little bit of
- 6:59Speaker 1: rust from not having played, But as the game went on,
- 7:03Speaker 1: they just played a little better and a little better
- 7:07Speaker 1: and a little better. Now, granted, Wake Force, with the
- 7:10Speaker 1: exception of their running backs, they're pretty bad offensively, their
- 7:14Speaker 1: quarterbacks not very good. But that said, this was a
- 7:18Speaker 1: fairly disciplined, you know game for Florida State on both
- 7:22Speaker 1: sides of the ball.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and again it would would it would
- 7:26Speaker 2: have been interesting to see how they handled it if
- 7:29Speaker 2: Wake did make some of the plays that were there,
- 7:31Speaker 2: especially early in the game, because you know, it's it's
- 7:33Speaker 2: seven to nothing late in the second quarter, midway to
- 7:36Speaker 2: the second quarter, late in the second quarter. But yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 2: to your point, when FSU did get stopped on fourth down,
- 7:41Speaker 2: the defense came out and played well. Win FSU did
- 7:44Speaker 2: you know, make mistakes, they didn't compound and so those
- 7:47Speaker 2: are all positive things. And as you said, they were
- 7:49Speaker 2: more disciplined. You didn't see guys running wide open. Even
- 7:52Speaker 2: when wake Forest quarterback got out and he's athletic, the
- 7:56Speaker 2: one thing he can really do is run yep, when
- 7:58Speaker 2: he got out on the perimeter, Forest it pretty quickly
- 8:00Speaker 2: and kept them to maybe a twelve yard game as
- 8:02Speaker 2: opposed to a thirty yard game. You think back to
- 8:05Speaker 2: the pit game or you know, I'd rather not we're
- 8:10Speaker 2: well in those games when the quarterback would get loose,
- 8:13Speaker 2: maybe you'd run for thirty yards. You didn't see that,
- 8:16Speaker 2: Like they rallied to the ball they hit. So those
- 8:18Speaker 2: are all, you know, definitely positive things. You know, I
- 8:21Speaker 2: don't like to leave a game where you played well
- 8:24Speaker 2: and point out that what you did wrong in previous games.
- 8:27Speaker 2: But but you know, that's the reality. We're looking at
- 8:29Speaker 2: a small window right now where they played the way
- 8:31Speaker 2: they were supposed to play.
- 8:38Speaker 1: With the marching Chiefs in the background, we are back
- 8:41Speaker 1: with Irishchafellewarchant dot Com taking some time on Mondays to
- 8:44Speaker 1: talk a little Florida State football. Iras, I'm looking at
- 8:47Speaker 1: the schedule that October. Uh, well, I mean late September,
- 8:51Speaker 1: you got Virginia Miami Pitt Stanford Miami. Yeah, we kind
- 8:56Speaker 1: of got boat race there, but Virginian Pitt. Is it
- 8:59Speaker 1: hard looking back and say at this point those were
- 9:02Speaker 1: bad losses. Florida State shouldn't have lost those games because
- 9:05Speaker 1: it looks to me like we were in those games.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Virginia is definitely not a bad loss. You know,
- 9:11Speaker 2: you're on the road on a Friday night, on a
- 9:13Speaker 2: short week, playing a team that now is number twelve
- 9:16Speaker 2: in the country, had a six year starting quarterback. You
- 9:19Speaker 2: were playing your first road game. I mean, I think
- 9:21Speaker 2: you're going to double overtime, and it's a game where
- 9:24Speaker 2: even in double overtime, you know, or during that game,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you have a chance to win the game, where you know,
- 9:29Speaker 2: a touchdowns overturned, and so to me, that game is
- 9:32Speaker 2: not a game you look back and it's a missed opportunity,
- 9:35Speaker 2: But to me, it's not a bad loss. Losing a
- 9:37Speaker 2: Pit to Losing to Pit at home is never good.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And you know, even though they're seven and two right now,
- 9:44Speaker 2: that's a game that you know you're gonna it's you
- 9:47Speaker 2: knows a Florida State fan and what you believe the
- 9:49Speaker 2: sport is and where Florida State should be. You don't
- 9:52Speaker 2: feel like you should ever lose at home to Pit.
- 9:53Speaker 2: So that's a tough one to swallow. Even though they're
- 9:55Speaker 2: seven and two, they've got a really good quarterback, they're
- 9:58Speaker 2: a good football team. But you know, so those twos aren't.
- 10:00Speaker 2: But yeah, I think to the point you're probably going
- 10:03Speaker 2: to try to make is the Stanford game is completely different, right.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, Stanford is the one that you have to
- 10:09Speaker 1: just scratch your head at. And that's really the one
- 10:11Speaker 1: that that is the one that might nag the decision
- 10:17Speaker 1: makers out there or even those that want to just
- 10:20Speaker 1: evaluate Mike Norvell because that's the one game that, under
- 10:24Speaker 1: no circumstances should this Florida State team lose to.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and especially when it happened, you know, and again,
- 10:30Speaker 2: it would be one thing if you were seven and
- 10:31Speaker 2: to zero and went out to Stanford, who is bad
- 10:35Speaker 2: and they are they're not a good football team. The
- 10:37Speaker 2: week before you played them, they give up thirty four points,
- 10:40Speaker 2: the week after that they give up forty two points.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Then this past week they give up another ton of points.
- 10:44Speaker 2: So they're a bad defense, and they were there to
- 10:48Speaker 2: get beaten and Florida stays offense just picked that day
- 10:51Speaker 2: to play. It's probably the worst game of the season.
- 10:53Speaker 2: They scored thirteen points, a ton of penalties, ton of
- 10:56Speaker 2: just mistakes and turnovers, just played terribly. And so that's
- 11:00Speaker 2: a game that you know, if you're having a good
- 11:04Speaker 2: season and you sleep walk through that game but then
- 11:06Speaker 2: pull it out at the end, nobody remembers it. A
- 11:08Speaker 2: lot of teams have those kinds of games. But when
- 11:10Speaker 2: you've already lost two games or three games in a
- 11:13Speaker 2: row and you know that you've got to rally around
- 11:15Speaker 2: this coach and this team, and then you go out
- 11:17Speaker 2: there and play like that, it was just really just
- 11:22Speaker 2: not just disappointing, but kind of an indictment on this team. Now,
- 11:25Speaker 2: you did come back, you know, after the bye week,
- 11:27Speaker 2: and you look good again. And if you turn it
- 11:29Speaker 2: around these next few weeks, maybe you can look at
- 11:32Speaker 2: that whole month in a different lens. But as of
- 11:36Speaker 2: right now, yeah, the Stanford game, to me is the
- 11:38Speaker 2: game that's the most inexcusable.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Regardless of who the head coach will be next season,
- 11:43Speaker 1: whether it's coach and Orvel coming back or whether they
- 11:45Speaker 1: go in another direction, what is needed for Florida State
- 11:49Speaker 1: to be in the world of the Ohio states of
- 11:52Speaker 1: the world, And I use Ohio State because they do
- 11:55Speaker 1: not have the biggest nil budget. It's a good one.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It's healthy, they're part of the Big ten, get a
- 12:00Speaker 1: lot of money. But they pick and choose their their
- 12:04Speaker 1: portal recruits very very specifically and carefully. But what they
- 12:09Speaker 1: seem to do better than maybe anybody else is they
- 12:12Speaker 1: get them out of high school and they develop them.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Is that the secret sauce? And what has to happen
- 12:17Speaker 1: for Florida State to get to that territory.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Well, I think that's where everybody wants to be. The
- 12:23Speaker 2: challenge is if you weren't already there when the portal happened,
- 12:27Speaker 2: it's hard to navigate this and this is the you
- 12:31Speaker 2: know where Florida State though the land mines they've been
- 12:33Speaker 2: walking through for the last four or five years is
- 12:36Speaker 2: you know, Florida State wasn't in the position when Mike
- 12:37Speaker 2: Norvel got hired to just say, you know what, we're
- 12:40Speaker 2: going to take some time and recruit through high schools.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Like he inherited a bad programs. They went heavy in
- 12:44Speaker 2: the portal and was rewarded for that. You went thirteen
- 12:47Speaker 2: to know, you won nineteen straight games, and so from
- 12:50Speaker 2: that standpoint, that felt like the right way to go.
- 12:53Speaker 2: But then you get married to it, and then you
- 12:55Speaker 2: can't get out of it. It's just hard to make
- 12:57Speaker 2: that transition now. I think whatever would whoever you know
- 13:02Speaker 2: and listen, it's even tard for Georgia and some of
- 13:04Speaker 2: these other teams. They've had a hard time holding on
- 13:05Speaker 2: to the high school for recrus. Mario Christobalt Miami has
- 13:08Speaker 2: gotten a ton of credit for how he's recruited high schools.
- 13:11Speaker 2: They've lost a lot of these guys because what happens
- 13:13Speaker 2: is you sign them, but then if they're not playing early,
- 13:15Speaker 2: or if you bring in portal guys to play, they're
- 13:18Speaker 2: going to leave and go to other schools. So it's
- 13:19Speaker 2: a really tricky thing. I do think from a big
- 13:22Speaker 2: picture standpoint, Florida State really needs to look at what
- 13:25Speaker 2: they need to do to get back to being great,
- 13:27Speaker 2: and I don't know if the portal's the answer to that.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Maybe there is a way to step back and say,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you know what, these next two years are not going
- 13:33Speaker 2: to be what we want to do. We're going to
- 13:35Speaker 2: play these young guys. We're not going to sign them
- 13:36Speaker 2: and let them transfer out. We're going to give it
- 13:38Speaker 2: some time and try to build for a run in
- 13:42Speaker 2: a couple of years. Otherwise you may just be kind
- 13:44Speaker 2: of stuck in this limbo. But it's easier to say
- 13:46Speaker 2: that than it is to do it, because then you
- 13:48Speaker 2: have to actually take the losses to come with playing
- 13:50Speaker 2: those young guys.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I was just going to ask you, do fans have
- 13:53Speaker 1: the patients for that? Do administrators have the patients for that?
- 13:58Speaker 2: That's the tough part, man. A lot of people say
- 14:00Speaker 2: they do until you get into it, and then you
- 14:02Speaker 2: don't want to actually watch the losses. So yeah, it's
- 14:06Speaker 2: it would take a commitment, it would take a you know,
- 14:09Speaker 2: a lot of forethought. But again, it's easy to say
- 14:11Speaker 2: that it's a lot harder when you go to the
- 14:12Speaker 2: city month Saturday. Yeah, and watch your team lose lose
- 14:15Speaker 2: to a bunch of older transfers from another team.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Iras always appreciate the insight. Thanks very much reading what
- 14:21Speaker 1: you do at war chant dot com. Thanks as always,
- 14:24Speaker 1: thanks pressing taking Ira Chaffel, Managing Editor war chant dot com.
