- 0:28Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:30coop. So today we're talking about
- 0:32failure, and we're talking about it in a completely different
- 0:36context than what some people would be used to talking about
- 0:40it. So for me, when I grew up,
- 0:42teachers, parents, nobody discussed failure other than it
- 0:47was a bad thing and there was certain connotations to it that
- 0:52were, you know, just, you know, you didn't do well.
- 0:55It was a failure. And for me, it never really felt
- 0:59100% right. But I accepted it because that's
- 1:01what everybody else was talking about.
- 1:03Then I heard that quote from Thomas Edison about in the
- 1:07process of doing all of his experiments to get us with to
- 1:12the light bulb that he, you know, quote UN quote failed 1000
- 1:16times. But he did not questioned by
- 1:18that with the reporter, he said I did not fail 1000 times.
- 1:21I figured out what did not work 1000 times and that resonated
- 1:25with me because it felt so true. So most of us have a context for
- 1:29that. So the real question comes down
- 1:32to, as a human being, how do you define failure?
- 1:36So for me, it's not about having things not work.
- 1:40You know, the first chicken coop that I got, I thought, oh, this
- 1:44is going to be more than big enough.
- 1:45This is going to be great. And then after having it for a
- 1:48year, I recognized that. It was not great.
- 1:52It was greater than a lot of people had.
- 1:55But for me, it was just not great.
- 1:56It was not how I wanted my girls to be spending their time.
- 2:00I wanted them to be able to have space from each other.
- 2:03I didn't want them to pick on each other.
- 2:05I wanted them to have, like, you know, their own little areas
- 2:08that they could have and not feel squished.
- 2:10Because half of the problem when chicken coops is the squishing.
- 2:14That's where they get their nasty behaviors from.
- 2:16It's, you know, that phrase all cooped up.
- 2:18It's real, my friends. Very real.
- 2:20So I didn't look at that like it was a failure, that I bought the
- 2:23wrong size coop. I looked at it like, OK, I
- 2:27learned something here. It taught me something.
- 2:30So it wasn't a failure. Some people might have thought
- 2:33it was a failure and probably a costly failure because I paid to
- 2:36have the shed and then I converted it to the coop.
- 2:38So yeah, it was, it was a bit of money to do that.
- 2:41But, you know, I didn't look at it like it was a failure.
- 2:44So I I started thinking about the fact that OK.
- 2:50Recently, in converting, you know, working in this new studio
- 2:53to be able to have a place where I can go and record classes and
- 2:57other things, I started thinking to myself, well, you know, we
- 3:00started off and that was not the intention for that space
- 3:02originally. Does that mean it was a failure?
- 3:04No. I learned something and I
- 3:06realized that my definition for failure is very different than a
- 3:11lot of people. I realized that my definition
- 3:14for failure is giving up on something and knowing you still
- 3:17want it. But for me, that's the
- 3:21definition. And when I recognize that, it's
- 3:24like, wow, okay. So I don't know that that's
- 3:27something that I had ever really considered before.
- 3:31And still I until I started consciously thinking about it.
- 3:33Then I started asking some friends and some clients and
- 3:37getting their opinions on it and they were like, wow, I guess.
- 3:39I don't know. My true definition of failure.
- 3:42And like most things, we are very poor at discerning our own
- 3:46definitions of things until we really put some energy into it.
- 3:49So for me, that's the definition.
- 3:52If I really want something and I give up on it, that's a failure.
- 3:56If I don't want it and I give up on it, that's very different.
- 3:59That's just me making a decision that I learned enough
- 4:01information and I decided I no longer want to align with it,
- 4:05pursue it because it no longer fits in with me, and then I move
- 4:09on. But it's not about giving up.
- 4:12It's just about that other piece.
- 4:15It's about, you know, when you give up, that's a true failure
- 4:21because you're just like, you know what, I'm throwing the
- 4:25towel and you know what? I I I can't see how to get here.
- 4:30I still want it. If I just give up.
- 4:32That's a real failure. Because we know better in
- 4:35ourselves. We know better.
- 4:37We know that we should not be feeling that way.
- 4:39We know that we should do better, be more and and stay on
- 4:44point. We know we should do better.
- 4:46We could try something. We could ask for someone else's
- 4:49help, perspective, whatever it might be.
- 4:52But the truth is. Not doing that and still wanting
- 4:56it, Still having that yearning. That's the failure.
- 4:59Knowing that there's some yearning desire inside of you
- 5:02and saying, hey, you know what, just because I don't know how or
- 5:06just because I can't see the path clearly, that means I
- 5:09should just quit. And for me, that's when you
- 5:12start to die with your music in you.
- 5:15So figure out what is your definition of failure so you can
- 5:18avoid it. And if yours is very similar to
- 5:21mine and you have things on your list and they are there for you
- 5:24to say, hey, they have things weighing in your heart that you
- 5:27want to get done while you're in this portion of your life.
- 5:31It's not about just giving up. It's about saying, you know
- 5:35what? I can do this because if it's in
- 5:38your heart, make it happen. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:41you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 5:43Bye.
