- 1:15And glory worth dying for.
- 1:17Well, today we're going to find out if we're talking about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, one of my all time favorite films.
- 1:23Back with the last episode this summer for the Systematic Ecology Summer Drive In.
- 1:28Really excited for this.
- 1:29You know, each year we have five different bonus series that we do on Fridays, usually shorter segments just for fun.
- 1:34At the end of the week we have our Halloween drive in, our Christmas drive in, we do an icon series.
- 1:39At the beginning of the new year, we have a spring bonus series that changes yearly what it is.
- 1:44And then of course we have the one that started all a classic, the summer Drive in series where we just kind of pretend like we went to a drive in.
- 1:50Talking about a movie for the first time.
- 1:52I'm really excited.
- 1:53Today we're talking about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
- 1:55I think it's my favorite movie.
- 1:57Sometimes I switch between it and Star Wars A New Hope, but usually I think I'll say Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom.
- 2:02I'm Joshua Noel here with the one and only pot almighty, TJ Tiberious.
- 2:06Juan Blackwell.
- 2:07Good to have you, tj.
- 2:08Thank you.
- 2:08Yeah, I mentioned this is the last one for the summer, so we're excited.
- 2:12We this summer we've been doing prequels to go along with the annual theme on systematic ecology of the faces behind us.
- 2:17We've been talking about prequel films.
- 2:18This summer we've talked Star Wars, Revenge of the Sith.
- 2:22TJ and I did.
- 2:23We didn't do line Q1 2.
- 2:25Somebody else did.
- 2:26We did some other Disney one.
- 2:27Ah, Monsters University.
- 2:29Yep.
- 2:30Monsters U.
- 2:31Yeah, yeah, we, you know, we had a lot of fun ones this year.
- 2:34Alien, Prometheus, one of those was on there.
- 2:36Something like that.
- 2:38And next week there's going to be a bonus.
- 2:41We recorded an extra.
- 2:43So if you're a member, even a free member of our show, you can hear Kevin Schaefer and myself talk about Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
- 2:51So come back next week for that.
- 2:54As long as you're a member or a free member.
- 2:56You can hear one more drive in after our last one that we're doing today on Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom.
- 3:03Couldn't possibly be more excited, tj, if we just left the drive in and this was our first time ever seeing Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or any Indiana Jones film for that matter.
- 3:13What do you think would be your first reaction?
- 3:15Like, what's the first thing you say?
- 3:16You turn to me and you're going to say, What?
- 3:18I have no idea.
- 3:19I can't imagine seeing it for the first time.
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:22Like, if I've never seen another Indiana Jones film, the best guess I have is I probably look at you and be like, damn, I knew Harrison Ford was going to be the better Rambo.
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:32Like, best Rambo.
- 3:34Here's the best movie of all time.
- 3:36Like, yeah, could just be stunned.
- 3:39Like, that was.
- 3:41Maybe I'd be like, you think they're going to play it again next week?
- 3:44Come back.
- 3:45It's like one of the.
- 3:46It's like they so rarely make movies that give you that feeling anymore where you leave theater.
- 3:52Like, holy crap.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:53And this.
- 3:54You feel like you just accomplished something.
- 3:56Yeah, yeah.
- 3:57Like Project Hail Marrying.
- 3:59I think that was the last time that I kind of felt that way.
- 4:01That was.
- 4:02Imagine that would be.
- 4:03Yeah.
- 4:04So, yeah, there's just no words.
- 4:08That's the name of the episode that's.
- 4:09Like, That's a classic.
- 4:10I'm gonna watch that forever.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:13Yeah.
- 4:14So Indiana Jones, Temple of Doom, it is a prequel.
- 4:17The first Indian Raider of the Lost Ark chronologically happens after the events of this film.
- 4:23And then you have the third movie, Indian Jones Last Crusade.
- 4:26And then Crystal Skull.
- 4:27And Crystal Skull, then Indian Dial of Destiny, which I actually do really like Dial of Destiny.
- 4:33But this is the only one that chronologically happens out of order.
- 4:36It's kind of weird.
- 4:37I do love this film because it's religion other than like what I grew up with.
- 4:41So to me, it was a kind of mysterious growing up.
- 4:42And I was like, oh, this is fun.
- 4:43I don't know anything about this people group.
- 4:45And it was whatever.
- 4:47And then you get older and you're like, oh, I don't know if that was great.
- 4:49And then you get even older and you learn some of the history of Indiana Jones and how all of Indiana Jones was actually a parody and it was meant to comment of other films at the time.
- 4:58But then you watch it again and you're like, I just have so many thoughts, so many unending thoughts and questions about how they handled it.
- 5:05Yeah.
- 5:05The contextualizing the movies adds a lot because.
- 5:10I don't know, I'm kind of big on it recently.
- 5:12But, like watching, you know, a murder mystery and then watching it again and you're like, oh, yeah, I'm not.
- 5:19I could have figured that out.
- 5:20Yeah.
- 5:21It wasn't impossible.
- 5:22I'm just stupid.
- 5:23That's what some of the paranormal ones bother me because it's like a mystery.
- 5:25And I'm like, yeah, I wasn't gonna figure that out.
- 5:27Y' all just invented the rules at the end of the movie.
- 5:30That irritates me.
- 5:31But that's different.
- 5:32Yeah.
- 5:33So for this movie, I wanted to do it.
- 5:35That's who picked it.
- 5:36And it was gonna be me, you and Justin.
- 5:38Reverend Justin had some other things to do.
- 5:40It's a great time.
- 5:41Usually we throw some of these up on Facebook for people to vote on, too.
- 5:44With Summer, we just let the host of run with what we want to do.
- 5:47Yeah, we do this for ourselves a little bit.
- 5:48Sometimes we just enjoy hanging out and talking about movies.
- 5:52My relationship with Indiana Jones films, I've watched them like every year since forever.
- 5:57I was talking with some cousins last weekend.
- 6:00My first reoccurring nightmare I ever remember having was about this movie where the guy pulls out Indian Jones heart.
- 6:06I remember being like a kid and I would wake up with that nightmare.
- 6:10And as an intelligent child, my first thought was, I should watch that now.
- 6:15So I would just watch in the middle of the night because I woke up with a nightmare about it.
- 6:18I guess just go see that.
- 6:19Yeah.
- 6:20My first nightmare was about sunshine.
- 6:22I don't know if you've ever seen sunshine.
- 6:24Not.
- 6:24Not nearly as popular as Temple of Doom, but there's a scene they have like a sun room.
- 6:29I thought you meant literal sunshine.
- 6:31No, no, no.
- 6:32I hate this.
- 6:33I hate this so much.
- 6:34But yeah, horrifying.
- 6:38Horrifying scene for like a six year old.
- 6:41They have like a sun room.
- 6:42Their mission is to nuke the sun.
- 6:45So after a certain point they're like, hey, don't go in the sunroom.
- 6:47It'll kill you.
- 6:48You'll die.
- 6:50Yeah.
- 6:51And someone does, and his body is covered in burns.
- 6:53And that used to horrify me.
- 6:55What's weird is I do remember one nightmare I had before, the Indiana Jones one.
- 6:58It involved Donkey Kong, but it wasn't a recurring nightmare.
- 7:01This one happened somewhat regularly and I just kept watching it.
- 7:04And I still watch all the Indiana Jones movies, like once or twice a year.
- 7:07So was that kind of like you have you just like growing up and a Jones has just always been there, right?
- 7:11Yeah, yeah.
- 7:12I mean, it's kind of weird.
- 7:13Like, what's your relationship with this movie like?
- 7:14I don't know, man.
- 7:15I'm an American.
- 7:16I was born after it came out.
- 7:18I'm seeing these movies.
- 7:21It's like 15 years older than I am.
- 7:24Yeah.
- 7:25If you had to summarize the movie, though, like what happens in Temple of.
- 7:29Doom, I think you should do it.
- 7:32I think you should see if you can do it in a minute.
- 7:34I don't think I can.
- 7:36I'm pretty confident I can't.
- 7:38Indiana Jones is a better James Bond on the run.
- 7:42His airplane goes down and proves that he's a better Rambo.
- 7:45Helps some indigenous people to India by restoring a relic that was a stone.
- 7:50Gets his heart pulled out in the meantime, but he's fine.
- 7:53That's pretty much it.
- 7:54Yeah, sure.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:55That wasn't even 30 seconds.
- 7:57Yeah.
- 7:58You know, that's a lot better than I thought I was going to do.
- 8:00I watched this movie a lot, though.
- 8:02Unfair advantage.
- 8:03I mean, you do.
- 8:05I missed a lot.
- 8:06I hate summarizing.
- 8:08Summarizing big movies like this because, like, you miss, you know, you miss all.
- 8:11The fun action because you're like, yeah, don't take that.
- 8:14Like, that's not the movie.
- 8:15Watch the movie.
- 8:16Watch the movie.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:19Why?
- 8:19You don't need a summary.
- 8:20You just need to watch it.
- 8:21Correct.
- 8:23So, you know, our annual theme this year on Faces behind us.
- 8:27So while we're doing prequel movies, we kind of want to look at some of the characters that maybe.
- 8:31We learned a lot of the prequels that helped show, shape the character in the original film.
- 8:35The only two I can really think of that might have shaped Indiana Jones is the female lead, Willie Scott.
- 8:40Then classic character, Short Round.
- 8:42Amazing.
- 8:43Best.
- 8:44I don't know, man.
- 8:45He's not protagonist.
- 8:46Sidekick.
- 8:47I don't want to say sidekick because he's short Round.
- 8:49He's a sidekick.
- 8:50Yeah, but it's Short Round.
- 8:52I don't know.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:53So anyway, how do you think Willy and Short Round influence Indy by the time we see him in Raiders arc?
- 8:59I don't know.
- 9:00That's hard for me because, like, I don't watch these movies all the time.
- 9:02To me, Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones.
- 9:05He is a turn.
- 9:06Yeah.
- 9:06You know, fair, unflappable, unshakable.
- 9:09So you probably don't like Dial of Destiny.
- 9:12I haven't seen it.
- 9:13Well, he's shakable, but, oh, no, I mean, shakeable.
- 9:17You know, he doesn't like snakes.
- 9:19Yeah, I.
- 9:21I don't know.
- 9:21I think Short Round, it's hard to say.
- 9:24I really don't.
- 9:25I don't know.
- 9:26I mean, Short Round is just cool.
- 9:27I feel like he probably wasn't that funny, you know, Indy wasn't that funny before this movie.
- 9:32Probably.
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:34Made him lighten up a little bit.
- 9:35Short Round made him lighten up a little bit.
- 9:36Yeah, Willie.
- 9:37I think.
- 9:38And, man, I don't know how to say this in a way that's not just Awful.
- 9:41But I feel like being with girls like Willie because, you know, Indiana Jones is kind of a promiscuous character for the most part.
- 9:47I think being with girls like him allowed him to be more open to whenever he goes back and he sees Miriam and all them and the other films and eventually does find the love of his life and things
- 9:58happen, you know.
- 9:59But I think without girls like Willie, I don't think he ever finds himself, you know?
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:04Yeah, I can see that makes sense.
- 10:06That's the best I got.
- 10:07Sorry, guys.
- 10:09Yeah, I mean, it's Indiana Jones.
- 10:10Who's he influenced by?
- 10:11Harrison Ford.
- 10:12Correct.
- 10:13So one of the cool things, though, so I mentioned earlier what Indiana Jones are supposed to do is comment on other films of the time.
- 10:20So as much as we all like to hate on Crystal Skull, films at the time were heavily focused on aliens.
- 10:26So they said, hey, if we're gonna be continuing to do what Indiana Jones does, we have to parody some sci fi films.
- 10:31And I think it was fair game.
- 10:33Was it the best film?
- 10:34No, but I think with that context of what the films are supposed to be, it kind of makes sense.
- 10:38And this one, when you know that, I feel like it really like that beginning scene where you're like, oh, this is just Harrison Ford being James Bond and this is just Harrison Ford being Rambo.
- 10:48I think it does a lot for the film, especially with the indigenous people of India in the Rambo films or films like that.
- 10:56They're either all bad guys or they're all just so uneducated, not able to do anything.
- 11:01So we have more of a range here.
- 11:03And India doesn't just save the day.
- 11:05There are good guys and bad guys who are from this place.
- 11:08So, like, there's much to be desired on how it handles, you know, foreign people, but it still sheds a light on how that's handled in other films and how it's not great.
- 11:19So, like, I feel like it pushes the envelope in the positive direction, but there's still much to be desired, you know?
- 11:23Yeah, it adds a lot, the different lens that it gives you to watch the movie, especially at the time.
- 11:30I can really imagine how, you know, oh, this is.
- 11:34This is kind of like Rambo.
- 11:35Yeah, yeah.
- 11:36Well, and.
- 11:37And, you know, there is that whole the white savior complex.
- 11:40Like, it's always the white guy has to go save the day.
- 11:42So it's kind of fun that, like, he gets trapped and, yes, he does save the day, the white savior thing, but he also gets saved.
- 11:50You know, like, they do help him also.
- 11:53So it's Kind of like they flip the script a little bit, but not so much that I'm like, oh, this is a flawless film.
- 11:58This is exactly how race should be handled, you know?
- 12:00Yeah.
- 12:01They don't flip the script enough for it to not be a Harrison Ford movie.
- 12:05Yeah.
- 12:05But they're still obviously pointing out some of the flaws that's in Rambo, even while going, hey, wasn't Rambo awesome?
- 12:13Yeah, Rainbow is awesome.
- 12:16Yeah.
- 12:16And Rainbow two's extra awesome.
- 12:19Yeah, Correct.
- 12:20Because the bad guys are white people, bad guys are cops.
- 12:25Yeah.
- 12:25I like when Harrison Ford fights the Irish people, actually.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:30So I'm just gonna keep making other action film references.
- 12:35So what is it about Temple of Doom that you really love?
- 12:38What do you.
- 12:39Is there anything you don't love about the movie?
- 12:41I don't know.
- 12:41Yeah, I'm not a big fan of cults.
- 12:43You know, like the big, over the top, fantastical.
- 12:46So you're not gonna join me and my.
- 12:49Okay, are you doing, like, human sacrifices,.
- 12:52Like a reasonable cult?
- 12:53It's fine.
- 12:53You know, I was just like, I was just gonna see who shows up for the most recordings and who doesn't, and we'll just, you know.
- 12:58Oh, yeah, it's a super.
- 12:59Not me.
- 13:02You.
- 13:02Christian Kevin.
- 13:04Yeah, but I mean, you don't show up for the least amount.
- 13:07I don't.
- 13:08That's true.
- 13:09Yeah.
- 13:10So probably, like, most things I would be around.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:15No, I mean, I think I love almost everything about this film.
- 13:19Even the stuff that I don't love, I still love.
- 13:22And I mean, like, that's.
- 13:23I don't know.
- 13:24It's hard to explain.
- 13:24Like, Willy's character is annoying.
- 13:28She is incredibly annoying.
- 13:29But also, again, understanding that this film's trying to parody other films of its style, like, of the time.
- 13:35And I'm like, yeah, I understand why they had an annoying damsel in distress and show you why that's not a character in real life.
- 13:41And they had to be really exaggerated about it.
- 13:43And I'm like, yep, nope, I don't love the character.
- 13:46But just because I know, like, what the film is supposed to be, I still kind of love it.
- 13:50It's hard to explain.
- 13:51Kind of.
- 13:52It's kind of like rose tinted glasses.
- 13:54Yeah.
- 13:54Yeah.
- 13:55The problem is knowing that it's at least partially parroting things.
- 13:59It's almost like the wrong answer is still the right answer.
- 14:02It's kind of cheating.
- 14:03It is cheating and you can't.
- 14:05Which makes it unfair if you're like, oh, yeah, but it's supposed to be bad.
- 14:10That's one of the signs.
- 14:11It's hard to critique parody because someone's always there.
- 14:13Like, it's supposed to be bad.
- 14:15It doesn't have to be.
- 14:16I think this is a great example of that.
- 14:17It's not.
- 14:18It's not bad.
- 14:19It's annoying.
- 14:20Indiana Jones is both a parody and just a good action film at the same time.
- 14:24Mm.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:25Yeah.
- 14:26Which is kind of a lost art.
- 14:28Oh, yeah.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:29Honestly, I still love the ripping the heart out scene.
- 14:32Like, I'm like, you know.
- 14:33Yeah.
- 14:34Of course the visual effects don't live up to today's standards.
- 14:36It's still pretty cool.
- 14:38Yeah, it is.
- 14:39And I think.
- 14:40I think if we're.
- 14:41If we're slogging these in with parody films, they exist in an echelon above so many others in terms of good, fun movie to watch.
- 14:51Like, it's at the very tip top of parody film.
- 14:55It is Temple of Doom, Raiders, not as noticeably.
- 15:00And Blazing Saddles.
- 15:03Blazing Saddles was funny also.
- 15:05I actually like 100 or a million Ways to Die in the West.
- 15:07Whatever it was that was funny.
- 15:09I don't know if that's a parody as much as it's just straight comedy, but.
- 15:12Hateful Eight, Adam Sandler.
- 15:14Hateful Eight.
- 15:15I have a soft love for Adam Sandler, so maybe.
- 15:17Yeah, I do love Adam Sandler.
- 15:19I think it's also really good.
- 15:20Yeah.
- 15:21Short Round also is probably why this is my favorite Indiana Jones film, to be fair.
- 15:25I don't know if he does a lot to change Indiana Jones character, but, God, Short Round is just so funny.
- 15:30And he just gives me so much joy watching him go down, like the little cart ride and stuff.
- 15:34And I'm like, yeah, yeah.
- 15:36Ever since I was a kid, I'm like, I want to do that.
- 15:38And now they're building an Indiana Jones coaster in Animal Kingdom, and I'm like, I'm going to do that.
- 15:43Yeah.
- 15:44That feeling has never gone away, actually.
- 15:46I just hope it matches the movie.
- 15:48Not because.
- 15:48Or particularly care, but because if we go and it doesn't, Josh is going to be like, that doesn't match at all.
- 15:54I'm really disappointed.
- 15:57Or it would be okay if they were like, didn't try to match the movie.
- 16:01They were like, this is just another adventure Indiana Jones did.
- 16:03That wasn't in the movies.
- 16:04That.
- 16:05That's cool.
- 16:05That's fine.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:07Because it is.
- 16:08But there's like.
- 16:09If there's like a short round cardboard cutout now, that's.
- 16:12That's going to just make me mad no matter what.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:16I Love that that actor is starting to get.
- 16:18Go around more, getting more props because it's just good to have Short Round in my life, you know?
- 16:24Phenomenal.
- 16:25Whatever ways I can get.
- 16:26Yeah.
- 16:26He's just a good actor.
- 16:27He's the best part.
- 16:28Yeah.
- 16:29Anything else you want to say about Temple of Doom?
- 16:31The phenomenal classic that we watch at the drive in and we're just speechless after and then recorded 20 minutes of silence for a podcast?
- 16:38Yeah.
- 16:39I think, to me, when I think Indiana Jones, I think Temple of Doom.
- 16:44Really?
- 16:44Yeah.
- 16:45Wait, are you with me?
- 16:46I'm like, Tipple Doom your favorite, or is it just first one you think of?
- 16:49It's just the first one.
- 16:50Okay.
- 16:51Yeah.
- 16:52Because most people like, it's Raider of our.
- 16:54You know, I'm trying to say Ray's Lost Ark or Last Crusade.
- 16:58That's most people's favorite.
- 16:59I love.
- 17:00Always love Temple of Doom.
- 17:01I.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:02Every.
- 17:02Like when he's running across the bridge, the crazy stuff in the river down below, like, every.
- 17:06Every part of it, I'm like, this is great.
- 17:08Like, I have everything I need from, like, a good spy film and a good Rambo film packed into one in his Harrison Ford and short round.
- 17:15And I'm just like, every part of this just brings me so much joy.
- 17:18The score is phenomenal.
- 17:20This was the first time I ever learned about other religions outside of Jude.
- 17:23Jewish, Christian stuff was like.
- 17:25I was like, yeah, what's a Hindu?
- 17:26I mean, it's not portraying things accurately, but, like, it's the first time I saw any of that.
- 17:31I think it awakened some kind of curiosity in me from a young age, like, I don't know.
- 17:35This film is integral to me as a human.
- 17:40Also, in case you're not familiar, what we were talking about, KE Huy Quan is short round, like, from Parasite.
- 17:48That's probably important to throw out.
- 17:49Yeah.
- 17:50In the Goonies.
- 17:51Yeah.
- 17:52Incredible.
- 17:53Incredible actor.

- 17:54Yeah.
- 17:54Well, we could do a whole thing.
- 17:56I did.
- 17:56I was on Ryan Doe's podcast, one of his podcasts, a while back and talked about this.
- 18:00So maybe I can find that and link it.
- 18:02We could do a full episode if you guys want us to.
- 18:04Just let us know, because I'll do an Indiana Jones series.
- 18:07I'm down.
- 18:07But you guys let us know.

- 18:12Question we've asked every episode this summer, tj, if we were designing a flavored tea or lemonade to go along with Temple of Doom at the.
- 18:20At the movie.
- 18:22What tea?

- 18:26I'm going to go with blood orange and or Joe.
- 18:31Or wait, is that tea or lemonade?
- 18:34Lemonade.
- 18:36I feel like it's got to be something native to India, you know?
- 18:40So I'm thinking like mango or something.
- 18:44Jackfruit maybe.
- 18:46Yeah, I could see like a good jackfruit tea or lemonade, but also have some kind of kick.
- 18:52I feel like we need to have some kind of spice in it or something.
- 18:54Yeah, I don't know, man.
- 18:56Maybe a mango spiced tea.
- 18:59Chamois, which is Thai, but still.
- 19:02Sure, why not?
- 19:03Yeah, I feel like it'd be good though.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05All right, cool.
- 19:06So let us know what you guys think as far as tea or lemonade for the Temple of Doom movies.
- 19:10I'm just kind of curious.
- 19:11I'm down to try any variety of teas and lemonades.
- 19:13Yeah, I just like beverages sometimes.
- 19:15Yeah, there's a Dutch bros near me.
- 19:17Now, so go over there and ask them.
- 19:19Yeah.
- 19:19What would you drink if you were about to watch?
- 19:22You can.
- 19:23They'll answer.
- 19:23I don't know how they find some happy, helpful people to hire.
