Latest / Outspoken the Podcast / Revisiting The State of Steph Claire Smith & Laura Henshaw's Friendship
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken Plus. It's your extra dose
- 0:07Speaker 1: of the hottest influencer and pop culture news.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I'm Sophie Torber.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And I'm Kate Torber. And coming up on today's show,
- 0:14Speaker 1: Kate Cassidy's epic airport fail and the state of Steph
- 0:18Speaker 1: Clare Smith and Laura Henshaw's friendship. But first, Rhys Hawkins
- 0:22Speaker 1: has backflipped on his playful swipe at his ex-fiancé and
- 0:25Speaker 1: baby mama Tammy Hembrough. He shared a photo of himself
- 0:29Speaker 1: smoking with the caption, Caffeine and cigarettes are going to
- 0:32Speaker 1: ruin your heart.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Have you seen my taste in women? I'll be fine.
- 0:37Speaker 1: This post got people talking clearly because it had 2.4
- 0:40Speaker 1: thousand send-ons.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I mean, it's a bit of a burn, isn't it,
- 0:43Speaker 2: to his ex Tammy Hembrough? Yeah, well, she was quick
- 0:46Speaker 2: to jump in.
- 0:47Speaker 1: She wrote, I beg your finest pardon, which got over
- 0:49Speaker 1: 6,000 likes. Now, Rhys quickly responded writing, just a joke,
- 0:53Speaker 1: we besties. It's a bit of a low blow because
- 0:55Speaker 1: his most high-profile relationship has been with Tammy Hembrough. I mean,
- 1:00Speaker 1: he could also be referring to London Gowan as well.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Things didn't seem to end very nicely there. Well, he
- 1:05Speaker 1: was married to London. I mean, the awkward thing is
- 1:07Speaker 1: he's actually got children with both of the women. So
- 1:10Speaker 1: you would think he would kind of steer clear of it.
- 1:12Speaker 1: To me, this just looks like an attempt to build
- 1:14Speaker 1: engagement and it's clearly worked. I mean, it appears that
- 1:17Speaker 1: Tammy and Rhys have quite an amicable relationship. They seem
- 1:20Speaker 1: to joke around. It's funny because most of the comments
- 1:22Speaker 1: underneath the post were calling for the pair to get
- 1:24Speaker 1: back together.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Everyone's like, when's it happening? Yeah, because at the start.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Of the year, Outspoken was reporting first that there was
- 1:30Speaker 1: some photos taken by citizen journalists that got sent in
- 1:34Speaker 1: to us of them canoodling on the beach.
- 1:36Speaker 2: We were asked so many times to release those photos.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And... We chose not to because their kids were in
- 1:42Speaker 1: the photos.
- 1:42Speaker 2: It was a little bit awkward. This post gives me
- 1:44Speaker 2: a bit of an ick though.
- 1:45Speaker 1: That being said, Tammy is guilty of producing a lot
- 1:48Speaker 1: of content like this just to get engagement. Well, maybe
- 1:51Speaker 1: they're perfect for each other because they seem both as
- 1:53Speaker 1: intention-seeking as one another.
- 1:55Speaker 2: No, Kate, but she's found that in her latest boyfriend. True,
- 1:58Speaker 2: but I don't know. I would actually like to see
- 2:00Speaker 2: her end up with Rhys.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I mean, I don't really think that this relationship with
- 2:03Speaker 1: Grayson is going to last much longer. I just think
- 2:05Speaker 1: she's going to be an Elizabeth Taylor kind of person
- 2:08Speaker 1: because I really think that she loves the start of
- 2:10Speaker 1: a relationship and she is very romantic. She romanticizes some
- 2:15Speaker 1: absolute douchebags. It was funny because Matt Zukowski jumped on
- 2:18Speaker 1: the same trend as Rhys Hawkins and posted a video about,
- 2:21Speaker 1: you know, his taste in women, but.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I actually can't find it. So I'm guessing.
- 2:24Speaker 1: maybe he deleted it because of some sort of backlash
- 2:27Speaker 1: and people like stopped talking about Tammy. And he also
- 2:30Speaker 1: recently posted a reel where he was saying that at
- 2:33Speaker 1: this stage in his dating life, he would actually be
- 2:36Speaker 1: happy to be love bombed and enjoy that kind of
- 2:39Speaker 1: relationship for a couple of months but then break up
- 2:41Speaker 1: and not sort of go through the rest of it
- 2:43Speaker 1: which was clearly in reference to what happened with his
- 2:45Speaker 1: relationship with Tammy I wonder if he's been watching off
- 2:47Speaker 1: campus too I feel like there's been a lot of
- 2:49Speaker 1: us who have been watching it and oh that spark
- 2:51Speaker 1: the start of the relationship I mean I don't really
- 2:54Speaker 1: have him down for off campus because he loves horror
- 2:56Speaker 1: movies so I think he loves all tv to be
- 2:58Speaker 1: fair maybe not the the teen girl sort of drama
- 3:01Speaker 1: things but we'll see he might do a review who
- 3:04Speaker 1: knows Laura Henshaw has apologized for being too business-focused following
- 3:08Speaker 1: the birth of Steph Clare Smith's first child, Harvey. The
- 3:12Speaker 1: former Kik CEO admitted it wasn't until she became a
- 3:15Speaker 1: mother herself that she understood what Steph was going through. God,
- 3:19Speaker 1: that sounds relatable.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Laura went as far as saying she acted like a C-U-N-D.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think this is a pretty common feeling for a
- 3:27Speaker 2: lot of new moms.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I know when I had Luca, I just had this
- 3:30Speaker 1: sudden urge to to literally apologise to every single one
- 3:34Speaker 1: of my friends who had kids before me because you
- 3:37Speaker 1: finally understand what they've been going through. I think that
- 3:39Speaker 1: as much as people try and tell you what they've
- 3:42Speaker 1: gone through, until you've lived it, you really truly can't
- 3:45Speaker 1: appreciate it, can you? As one of the recipients of
- 3:48Speaker 1: that apology, God, it felt sweet when I got it
- 3:50Speaker 1: because leading into the birth of your son, my husband
- 3:54Speaker 1: and I had countless discussions. Well, I think it was
- 3:56Speaker 1: more of a pep talk from him to me being like,
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's okay, they're going to get it.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And this is my other sister, Amy included, and they'll apologize.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And you did. So apology accepted. You don't know until
- 4:06Speaker 2: you're in the situation, do you?
- 4:08Speaker 1: See, I think when I was pregnant, I just hated
- 4:10Speaker 1: all of the people saying, just you wait. And I've
- 4:12Speaker 1: literally turned into that person. I mean, we have spoken
- 4:16Speaker 1: a lot on the Mums Group about this concept of
- 4:18Speaker 1: the apology tour. And it seems like Laura Henshaw has
- 4:22Speaker 1: been on one herself. So speaking on their podcast, The
- 4:25Speaker 1: Kick Pod, The women were asked by a listener if
- 4:28Speaker 1: their friendship dynamic has changed since Laura had a baby.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And for some quick background, Laura gave birth to her
- 4:34Speaker 1: son Atlas in December, while Steph has a five-year-old son
- 4:37Speaker 1: called Harvey and a daughter called Billy, who's just turned one.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And it was very clear that Steph tried to choose
- 4:44Speaker 1: her words very carefully. She said that she thinks Laura
- 4:48Speaker 1: has always been an incredibly patient and supportive person, but prefaced,
- 4:52Speaker 1: to the level.
- 4:53Speaker 2: You can be without being a parent yourself.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I feel like as she spoke more, the cracks started
- 4:58Speaker 1: to appear.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It was like word vomit. Yeah, it was.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And I found the whole conversation really interesting because it
- 5:05Speaker 1: was only, I think a year or so ago when
- 5:08Speaker 1: Laura and Steph spoke about, and let's call it for
- 5:11Speaker 1: what it clearly was, a bit of a feud behind
- 5:13Speaker 1: the scenes. So from memory, I think they went on
- 5:17Speaker 1: a little bit of a retreat or something for their business.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And then I think they were in their prospective rooms
- 5:23Speaker 1: with their partners and basically had a fight and their
- 5:26Speaker 1: partners were trying to resolve things. And I'm guessing it
- 5:28Speaker 1: was probably after hearing this conversation because Steph was just
- 5:32Speaker 1: so frustrated because it appears that Laura was on a
- 5:35Speaker 1: completely different page than her. Like she was really wanting
- 5:38Speaker 1: world domination with kick. Like she wanted this.
- 5:41Speaker 2: To go global.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Well, they both said that since becoming parents, they've become
- 5:45Speaker 1: closer because they find it easier now that they're in
- 5:48Speaker 1: the same season of life. And Laura did say that
- 5:52Speaker 1: she doesn't think she did a very good job when
- 5:54Speaker 1: Steph first had Harvey and now feels a lot.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Of yuckiness about it.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I mean, I could tell when Laura was speaking that
- 6:00Speaker 1: she genuinely does hold a lot of guilt around the
- 6:03Speaker 1: way she acted. And I think it was really exacerbated
- 6:06Speaker 1: by a recent phone call that they had the night
- 6:09Speaker 1: before they recorded this podcast because Steph was opening up
- 6:12Speaker 1: to Laura about how different her breastfeeding journey had been
- 6:15Speaker 1: with her two kids and So she has just finished
- 6:18Speaker 1: breastfeeding her one-year-old Billy. And she said that it felt
- 6:22Speaker 1: different this time because she was in control of her
- 6:24Speaker 1: decision to stop. Whereas with her son, Harvey, she had
- 6:28Speaker 1: no choice to stop because she was expected to be
- 6:30Speaker 1: back in the office working five days a week. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: this was all happening in 2021 when Kik was experiencing
- 6:37Speaker 1: this major growth because during the pandemic, there was this
- 6:40Speaker 1: huge demand for at-home fitness plans. And Their business reportedly
- 6:45Speaker 1: had a 91% increase in revenue over a two-year period
- 6:49Speaker 1: and a 60% growth in its customer base. So they
- 6:53Speaker 1: actually revealed on this podcast that at the time there
- 6:55Speaker 1: was this huge carrot dangling over their heads and they
- 6:58Speaker 1: were told if they went really hard for the next year,
- 7:01Speaker 1: they would in turn unlock this extra level of freedom
- 7:04Speaker 1: in their lives and So it actually seems like that's
- 7:07Speaker 1: the level of freedom that they're experiencing now because it
- 7:09Speaker 1: sounds like their work-life balance is a lot different now.
- 7:12Speaker 1: They have the opportunity to be home with their kids
- 7:14Speaker 1: a lot more. See, I interpreted that differently because they
- 7:18Speaker 1: made a comment that they're glad that they didn't go
- 7:20Speaker 1: down that path. because it's something that they think they
- 7:23Speaker 1: wouldn't have actually wanted. And I took that as that
- 7:26Speaker 1: they were trying to be bought out and that they
- 7:28Speaker 1: were no longer going to be involved in the business.
- 7:31Speaker 1: A little bit like what happened with Kayla with Sweat originally.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I mean, she's bought Sweat back now. But I think
- 7:37Speaker 1: at that time, businesses were being snapped up by these
- 7:40Speaker 1: big corporations. And I think they're probably glad that they
- 7:43Speaker 1: can hold on to their business, which they've referenced is
- 7:46Speaker 1: like their baby. but still run it and not have
- 7:49Speaker 1: to work as many days in the office? Yeah, it
- 7:52Speaker 1: sounded like maybe they had a huge investor who wanted
- 7:54Speaker 1: to take things globally and have them as the face
- 7:56Speaker 1: of the business and eventually.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Buy them out.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But then as you say, Kate, they decided, no, they
- 8:01Speaker 1: want to have control over their business and maybe they
- 8:03Speaker 1: just hired more people to make it easier for them.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I mean, Laura stepped down as the CEO of Kick
- 8:08Speaker 1: right before Atlas was born. So it just seems like
- 8:11Speaker 1: they have a really good team around them. I found
- 8:14Speaker 1: this little nugget that Steph dropped really interesting. So she
- 8:17Speaker 1: told this story on the podcast about how she and
- 8:19Speaker 1: her husband, Josh, were out at dinner with Laura and
- 8:21Speaker 1: Dalton and another couple who had just moved to the UK.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And at the time, Steph was pregnant with Billy. So
- 8:28Speaker 1: that would have meant that this dinner was either late
- 8:30Speaker 1: 2024 or early 2025. And off the back of their
- 8:35Speaker 1: joint friends moving overseas, Laura and Dalton announced at this
- 8:38Speaker 1: dinner that they were thinking about living in New York
- 8:42Speaker 1: for the following year for around six months.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Let's take a listen to what Steph said.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And Josh and I were just like sitting there nodding,
- 8:48Speaker 3: being like, yeah, we just bought a property out like
- 8:50Speaker 3: an hour away from the city.
- 8:52Speaker 2: About to settle down and enroll Harvey in.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Primary school like it was just so weird because we
- 8:57Speaker 3: were like sitting there nodding and smiling being like fuck
- 9:00Speaker 3: we are lives apart like from this crew right now
- 9:03Speaker 3: but still like so excited for you both and everything
- 9:06Speaker 3: you were telling us but yeah we walked away from
- 9:08Speaker 3: that dinner being like whoa our lives are very different
- 9:11Speaker 3: I mean fast forward you then had the surprise of
- 9:13Speaker 3: your life and that you know didn't happen I.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Mean, is this sort of code for we went home
- 9:19Speaker 1: and had a big bitch about how out of touch
- 9:21Speaker 1: you are and what separate lives we're living? I mean, yes,
- 9:24Speaker 1: but I think bitch has a negative connotation. I think
- 9:26Speaker 1: it would have been more like, oh my gosh, like
- 9:28Speaker 1: an envious thing. Like, can you believe? that they can
- 9:31Speaker 1: even consider that. Because when you're a parent, you can't
- 9:33Speaker 1: even fathom the stuff that you're like, I should have
- 9:35Speaker 1: done that.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And I should have done that. And all the time
- 9:37Speaker 2: that you had.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I wonder if they had plans to expand the business
- 9:40Speaker 1: to the US and Laura was going to go and
- 9:42Speaker 1: set up that arm of the business over there. I mean,
- 9:44Speaker 1: that makes sense considering like how she can't just really
- 9:46Speaker 1: up and leave when she's got the business there. It's
- 9:49Speaker 1: interesting because a lot of their marketing was targeted towards
- 9:52Speaker 1: the UK. They did quite a few trips there a
- 9:54Speaker 1: couple of years ago and they seem to be really
- 9:57Speaker 1: booming there. So perhaps America was their next stop. Liam
- 10:01Speaker 1: Payne's girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, has broken down after an embarrassing
- 10:05Speaker 1: ordeal at the airport.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Now, she travels through airports a lot.
- 10:09Speaker 1: This time she was on her way home to see
- 10:11Speaker 1: her sister graduate college. And she explained on a TikTok
- 10:14Speaker 1: that she was standing in line at the airport security
- 10:17Speaker 1: waiting to go through and She got to the front
- 10:19Speaker 1: of the line, handed her passport to the officer and
- 10:22Speaker 1: he proceeded to run.
- 10:23Speaker 2: The facial recognition technology.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So this is where they take a live photo of
- 10:27Speaker 1: you and then the computer converts it into a digital
- 10:30Speaker 1: face print to see if it is you in your
- 10:33Speaker 1: passport photo. Now, she was expecting to get the green
- 10:36Speaker 1: light to say she could go through, but she got
- 10:38Speaker 1: the red light and this led.
- 10:40Speaker 2: More officers to come over and investigate. This is what
- 10:44Speaker 2: happened next. So he calls over a woman and she
- 10:47Speaker 2: literally looks at my passport. She looks at me. She's
- 10:49Speaker 2: literally doing a double take, like up and down, up
- 10:51Speaker 2: and down.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And this woman literally keeps going on and on and
- 10:54Speaker 1: on about how this isn't you.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You're giving me somebody else's passport. She goes, new nose,
- 11:01Speaker 2: new lips, something to your eyes, new hair. I pull
- 11:05Speaker 2: out my ID.
- 11:06Speaker 3: She looks at my ID.
- 11:07Speaker 2: She looks at my passport. She looks at me. She goes, one, two, three.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Those are three different people.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And literally....
- 11:17Speaker 2: God, I feel so sorry for Kate.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Like I can actually feel myself burning up and sweating
- 11:20Speaker 1: just thinking about this happening to you. It got even
- 11:24Speaker 1: worse though, because the agent ended up calling over three
- 11:26Speaker 1: more of her colleagues to look.
- 11:28Speaker 2: At the passport.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And one asked her, oh, do you have an ID
- 11:32Speaker 1: that we can compare your passport photo to? She actually
- 11:35Speaker 1: offered to pull up her Instagram account, which I don't
- 11:37Speaker 1: think is legal.
- 11:39Speaker 2: So they didn't accept that.
- 11:40Speaker 1: She just said it was such a humiliating experience as
- 11:43Speaker 1: everyone behind her was listening in.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I mean, imagine the person saying, oh, all three.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Of these photos don't look like you. You've literally had
- 11:50Speaker 1: so much work done. We can't even recognize you. I
- 11:53Speaker 1: get that this is a security thing, but I think
- 11:55Speaker 1: there's a way of going about it. And to me,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Kate's recount just shows that they were being really judgmental.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Like I think they knew it was her, but they
- 12:03Speaker 1: were just trying to be like, oh, you've changed all
- 12:05Speaker 1: of these things. Like to say, oh, new nose, new lips,
- 12:08Speaker 1: like wouldn't you say different nose, different lips?
- 12:11Speaker 2: I disagree. I think that they were just doing their jobs.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I mean, airport security is really important. And I mean,
- 12:17Speaker 1: she showed her TikTok, the picture of her passport photo.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And to be fair, she did look like a completely
- 12:24Speaker 1: different person in it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I think all she needs to do is update her
- 12:27Speaker 2: passport photo.
- 12:28Speaker 1: This is going to really become a problem though, because
- 12:31Speaker 1: obviously with plastic surgery and different procedures being normalized, people's
- 12:34Speaker 1: faces are changing. And I mean, how long do passport
- 12:38Speaker 1: photos last now? Is it still 10 years or is
- 12:39Speaker 1: it five years? Well, it just depends what passport you get.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I think you can get like a long-term one for
- 12:44Speaker 1: 10 years and I think it's like three or five years.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Obviously, you have to pay more if you want to
- 12:49Speaker 2: update your photo. I haven't really ever thought.
- 12:51Speaker 1: About it, but I remember having an experience where I
- 12:54Speaker 1: wished that I was rejected from my passport because the
- 12:56Speaker 1: photo was from 10 years earlier and I think I
- 12:59Speaker 1: was 17 at the time and it was an incredibly
- 13:03Speaker 1: unflattering photo. It looked about 12. And I was having
- 13:05Speaker 1: to travel on that passport as an adult. And I
- 13:09Speaker 1: was like thinking, how are people actually approving this?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Like, do I still look like that?
- 13:13Speaker 1: I remember there was this TikTok trend where people were
- 13:15Speaker 1: giving advice on how to take the perfect passport or
- 13:18Speaker 1: driver's license photo and how to look glam in it.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And I was thinking, I actually don't want to have
- 13:23Speaker 1: a really glamorous passport photo because knowing me, I travel
- 13:26Speaker 1: looking like absolute crap when I go through an airport.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And I don't want people having this situation where they're like,
- 13:31Speaker 1: hold on, this isn't you.
- 13:33Speaker 2: What's going on? Yeah, you want them to be pleasantly surprised. Like, oh,
- 13:35Speaker 2: she scrubbed out well for a 24-hour flight.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 2: There weren't actually that.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Many people who felt sympathetic for Kate Cassidy. A lot
- 13:42Speaker 1: of people pointed out that the airport security were just
- 13:45Speaker 1: doing their job. So one person wrote, the woman is correct.
- 13:48Speaker 1: She's just doing her job. The photo doesn't match. Another said,
- 13:52Speaker 1: I mean this in the best way. It's time to
- 13:54Speaker 1: update the picture on the passport. You're gorgeous in both,
- 13:57Speaker 1: but there's a lot of differences. And if I didn't
- 13:59Speaker 1: know better, it does look like a different person. I'm
- 14:02Speaker 1: not saying how they treated you was okay. but I
- 14:04Speaker 1: can see why they asked for additional IDs. You really
- 14:07Speaker 1: have changed a bit since that photo. Whilst another said
- 14:10Speaker 1: they should have been more polite about it, but in
- 14:12Speaker 1: the heat of the moment, they were more likely concerned
- 14:14Speaker 1: with the safety and security of their airport and keeping
- 14:17Speaker 1: their jobs at a time when things are so predictable.
- 14:20Speaker 1: They likely were not thinking of your feelings.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And I tend to think that they've hit the nail
- 14:24Speaker 2: on the head with those comments.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I actually recently got my driver's license photo updated because
- 14:29Speaker 1: I changed my name And it's so weird now you're
- 14:32Speaker 1: not allowed to smile in the photo.
- 14:34Speaker 2: And I found that really weird. I'm like, well, why not?
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah, well, they say that when you're pulled over, you're
- 14:38Speaker 1: hardly going to be smiling, particularly if you've been.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Pulled over by police. But I think it's stupid as well.
- 14:43Speaker 1: One thing that I've always wondered when we travel together
- 14:46Speaker 1: is how can the airport security determine if we're traveling
- 14:49Speaker 1: on each other's passports? You know, being identical triplets, how
- 14:52Speaker 1: could they tell the difference? I've always been tempted to
- 14:54Speaker 1: see if I could get through using one of yours.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I mean, I wonder with the increase in plastic surgery
- 15:00Speaker 1: and fillers and all of that sort of stuff that
