Helen Haines critical after alleged ramming in Victoria
Independent MP Helen Haines remains in critical condition after being rammed against a vehicle near her electorate office in Wangaratta, northern Victoria. Witnesses alleged the driver made a U-turn, struck Haines, then reversed and hit her again. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said a bystander pulled the driver from the vehicle and held him until police arrived. Haines was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital for emergency surgery. A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee was arrested at the scene. Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason said police expected to interview the suspect.
