- 0:00Father God, we thank you for tonight and a chance to gather
- 0:02together to understand more of what Your Word says.
- 0:06You realize, Lord, that you are a great God, and You have given
- 0:10us Your word to explain to us who You are and what You've
- 0:13done. The whole Bible is about you,
- 0:16and we have come to worship and to honor you.
- 0:20We've come to understand You. Lord, You want us to know you.
- 0:25You've said that your people Israel were destroyed because
- 0:29they did not know you. And so, Father, we have come to
- 0:33understand the greatness of your character.
- 0:36So tonight instruct us in the way that we should go, that we
- 0:40might grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ our
- 0:44Lord, until you come again, as you most surely will, in Jesus
- 0:47name, Amen. There was once a man who was
- 0:55extremely unfulfilled, unhappy, unsatisfied.
- 1:05He was not satisfied with his job.
- 1:09In fact, he was depressed about his job.
- 1:13He was not happy with his family nor his wife.
- 1:18So he decided to escape it all. He decided to get away and he
- 1:27joined a mute monastery where he took a vow of silence where he
- 1:36could not say anything for five years.
- 1:42So he went and thought, this is going to be great.
- 1:46Nobody to bug me, nobody to criticize me, nobody to yell at
- 1:51me. It's going to be great.
- 1:54So he went to this mute monastery and didn't say
- 1:59anything for five years. At the end of those five years
- 2:04he could say 2 words. So he was called into the
- 2:08superiors office and he said you were able to say 2 words, would
- 2:12you like to say them today? He nodded and said bad food.
- 2:25So he went back to the monastery, was there for another
- 2:29five years. At the end of those five years,
- 2:33he was able to meet with the superior, and the superior asked
- 2:38him, You have an opportunity to say 2 words, which 2 words do
- 2:42you choose? He said hard bed and he went
- 2:50back to the monastery and was there for another five years.
- 2:56Upon meeting with the superior one more time, his superior
- 3:01asked if he had any words or any 2 words you would like to say.
- 3:07He nodded his head and said I quit, to which the superior
- 3:17responded. Well, I'm not surprised you've
- 3:21done nothing but complain ever since you got here.
- 3:28I read that story and I couldn't help but laugh to myself.
- 3:31Because so many of us are unsatisfied with where we're at.
- 3:37If we can change our circumstances, If we can change
- 3:39our situation, If we can change our job.
- 3:42If we can change our wife or husband or family or kids.
- 3:46If we could just change things the way we think they should be,
- 3:51maybe we'll be fulfilled, maybe we'll be happy, maybe finally
- 3:57I'll gain some kind of satisfaction.
- 4:02And the reason that is, is because man is driven by 1
- 4:09motivating factor, and that factor is simply the drive for
- 4:19fulfillment. Every man that's ever born has
- 4:25that same drive, that same passion within him or within
- 4:30her, that somehow I could be, can be fulfilled in life.
- 4:41Israel was that way as a nation. They were driven to be
- 4:47fulfilled. So to begin tonight, turn with
- 4:51me in your Bible to do Jeremiah chapter 2.
- 4:54I want to show you something. God is going to speak to the
- 5:01nation right before they go into captivity.
- 5:06Jeremiah is the prophet, and so the Lord says in chapter 2 verse
- 5:12#4 hear the word of the Lord, O House of Jacob, and all the
- 5:16families of the House of Israel. Thus says the Lord, What
- 5:20injustice did your father's find in me that they went far from
- 5:27me, and walked after emptiness and became empty?
- 5:36Or to ask a question what? What is it that drove you away
- 5:40from me so much so that you would you would be driven to
- 5:47something that's unfulfilling? What caused you to do that?
- 5:55Verse #8 at the end says they walked after things that did not
- 6:01profit. You left me for no advantage.
- 6:06You left me for no satisfaction. You left me for no fulfillment.
- 6:10You left me to be empty. Why?
- 6:18And the Lord says in in verse 10, you can, you can look as far
- 6:21to the West as you want or as far to the east as you want.
- 6:26No matter how far you look in the West or the east, no matter
- 6:31how far you look, the answer will escape you.
- 6:40So he says in verse 11, has a nation changed gods when they
- 6:47were not gods? He asked a question.
- 6:52Did did the Canaanites change from worshipping Baal when Baal
- 6:59is not a God? Answer no.
- 7:04Did they change from worshipping Ashtaroth?
- 7:10And Ashtaroth is not even a God. But did they change their gods?
- 7:15Answer no, not at all. Did the Babylonians change from
- 7:23worshipping Marduk and Marduk's not even a God?
- 7:28Answer No. Nations didn't change their gods
- 7:38when they didn't even have a God.
- 7:44But he says my people have changed their glory for that
- 7:53which does not profit. My people who have the
- 8:00opportunity to worship the one true God, have turned from me to
- 8:10pursue that which does not profit.
- 8:15So he says in verse 12, Be appalled the heavens at this and
- 8:19shudder. Be very desolate, declares the
- 8:21Lord. For my people have committed 2
- 8:24evils. They have forsaken me, the
- 8:28fountain of living waters, to dig for themselves.
- 8:32Cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
- 8:41The Lord says, I want you to stand back and be appalled and
- 8:44be astonished at this. So heavens, you're not going to
- 8:48believe what I'm going to tell you, but I'm going to tell you
- 8:53that my people have forsaken me. They have committed 2 evils.
- 8:58And notice the evil wasn't they murdered somebody.
- 9:02The evil wasn't that they committed immorality.
- 9:08The evil was simply that they, as he says, forsaken me, the
- 9:17fountain that gives true living water.
- 9:22And they, they dug for themselves broken cisterns that
- 9:30can never hold water. He, he helps you understand what
- 9:35evil really is. This is evil.
- 9:39Whenever you choose to be satisfied and fulfilled with
- 9:45something other than the true God, you have committed that
- 9:50which is evil because you have forsaken the true and living God
- 9:56to pursue something that cannot fulfill you.
- 9:59It's empty, it's it's vain, it's useless, but people do that all
- 10:06the time because the the motivating factor in every man's
- 10:10life is a drive for fulfillment. But yet if you drive in a way
- 10:18that takes you away from God, you're committed evil and you
- 10:25will never be satisfied. In fact, he says down to verse
- 10:29#17 have you not done this to yourself by your forsaking the
- 10:36Lord your God, when he led you in the way, I mean, you did
- 10:40this, I LED you all the way. I cared for you, I nurtured you,
- 10:44I protected you, I provided for you, I did everything for you.
- 10:47I fought your enemies for you, I part of the Red Sea for you, I
- 10:50fed you manna from heaven. I did everything for you.
- 10:54And yet you did this to yourself.
- 10:56You decided to forsake me. You decided to walk away from me
- 11:00because in your mind you thought that there was something else
- 11:04that was better than me. There is something that will
- 11:09fulfill you and satisfy you better than me.
- 11:18And God defines that as evil. We don't think it that way.
- 11:25We think that people who commit heinous sins, they're evil.
- 11:30But in God's eyes, whenever you turn from him and pursue that
- 11:34which is nothing but you think it's something that's evil.
- 11:43Verse 19, he says your own wickedness will correct you and
- 11:47your apostasies will reprove. You know therefore and see that
- 11:51it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God.
- 11:58He tells him why, And the dread of me is not in you, declares
- 12:03the Lord God of hosts. He says you don't fear me.
- 12:11That's why you turn from me, verse 22.
- 12:15Although you wash yourselves with Lye and use much soap, the
- 12:19stain of your iniquity is before me, declares the Lord.
- 12:23You go through the motions of trying to cleanse yourself.
- 12:26You try to get things right, but you're not.
- 12:31You're not truly repenting of your sin.
- 12:36How sad. Many years earlier, Isaiah the
- 12:44prophet was prophesying to the nation.
- 12:47This is what he says in chapter 55 verse #1 Ho, everyone who
- 12:55thirsts, everyone. Anybody who's thirsty.
- 13:00Now remember the number one motivation in the heart of every
- 13:04man is a drive for fulfillment, a drive to satisfy whatever
- 13:08thirst you have, the drive to satisfy whatever hunger you
- 13:12possess. Every man is driven the same
- 13:16way. So God says to the prophet
- 13:20Isaiah, everybody you thirst, no matter where you are, whether
- 13:23you're a Jew or you're a Gentile, whoever is thirsty,
- 13:29come to the waters and you have no money.
- 13:34Come buy, eat, come buy wine and milk without money and without
- 13:38cost. Why do you spend your money for
- 13:42what is not bread and your wages for what does not satisfy?
- 13:47Listen carefully to me and eat what is good and delight
- 13:50yourself in abundance. Incline your ear and come to me.
- 13:54Listen that you may live. You see, God is is is pleading
- 13:59with people. He's pleading with the nation.
- 14:03You come, come that you might live.
- 14:06You're thirsty. I will satisfy your parched
- 14:09soul. You're hungry.
- 14:12I will feed you with in ways you'll never understand, but you
- 14:17got to listen to me. Verse 6 Seek the Lord while he
- 14:22may be found. Call upon him while he's near.
- 14:24Let the wicked forsake his way and the righteous man his his
- 14:28thoughts, and let him return to the Lord, and he will have
- 14:32compassion on him and to our God, for he will abundantly
- 14:38pardon. This is Isaiah, he's prophesying
- 14:43before Jeremiah. He is pleading with the people.
- 14:47This is what God says. Come and the Lord will satisfy.
- 14:53He'll protect you, He'll provide for you, and by the time
- 14:58Jeremiah prophecies, they have committed the evil of turning
- 15:04away from the one true God who can fulfill them to pursue
- 15:11something that can do nothing for them.
- 15:16It could be a person, it could be an event, it could be a
- 15:20situation, but they're pursuing all all that there is, but never
- 15:30be satisfied. Excuse me.
- 15:35So Jesus comes along in Matthew chapter 5 and says, I want to
- 15:44give you, provide for you fulfillment.
- 15:51You are driven that way anyway, but you need to be driven my
- 15:56way. You be driven to me.
- 16:01And so he begins this Sermon on the Mount by saying, blessed are
- 16:07the poor in spirit, for there's the Kingdom of heaven.
- 16:11Blessed are those who mourn, for they should be comforted.
- 16:17Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
- 16:23I'm offering you my Kingdom. I'm offering you comfort.
- 16:28I'm offering you the world. And then he says, blessed are
- 16:37those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they and they
- 16:45only will be satisfied. Nothing else is going to satisfy
- 16:52you. Every other pursuit you have
- 16:57will end up in emptiness but you hunger and thirst for
- 17:03righteousness. Then you will find satisfaction.
- 17:12That's the beatitude for this evening.
- 17:16If you have your notes in front of you, the outline is the same
- 17:19as it was the previous three weeks.
- 17:22We will define the condition, describe the consequences,
- 17:26detail the characteristics, and then determine our course.
- 17:32Let's define the condition. Blessed are those who are hungry
- 17:40and are thirsty for righteousness.
- 17:47First of all, the negative aspect of hungry and thirsty.
- 17:52It's interesting to note that every one of us has pursuits in
- 17:59life, driving ambitions. Usually they're material and
- 18:08temporal, not spiritual and eternal.
- 18:15That 17th century philosopher Blaise Pascal said.
- 18:19All men seek happiness. This is without exception.
- 18:24Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this
- 18:29end. The cause of some going to war,
- 18:33and of others avoiding it is the same desire in both attending
- 18:38with different views. They will never take the least
- 18:43step but to this objective. This is the motive of every man,
- 18:49even to those who hang themselves.
- 18:52He understood that man is driven with passion.
- 19:00Everybody has a driving mechanism within them.
- 19:06It's always the same. I must be satisfied, I must be
- 19:11fulfilled because I'm empty. So we begin to pursue whatever
- 19:17avenues out there to fulfill my emptiness.
- 19:23Sometimes it's praise. People need praise.
- 19:29So we work hard at work so that my boss and my fellow employees
- 19:33will praise me. I'll work hard in in the gym so
- 19:38that when I go to the field, I'll perform at a great, great
- 19:42height and everybody will praise me.
- 19:46People have an ambition to be praised, to be honored, to be
- 19:49recognized, to be affirmed, and that that motivates them.
- 19:53It drives them so much so that they begin to manipulate events
- 19:57so that they are praised even all the more.
- 20:02Christ would say in Matthew chapter 6 verse one, beware of
- 20:07practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by
- 20:09them. Otherwise you have no reward
- 20:11with your Father who is in heaven.
- 20:14So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you,
- 20:18as the hypocrites do in the synagogues.
- 20:21And in the streets that they may be honored by men.
- 20:26Truly, I say to you, they have their reward in full.
- 20:31Don't be like the hypocrites. They want everybody to know how
- 20:34much they give. So they'll blow the trumpet as
- 20:37they begin to drop their gifts in the in the offering basket
- 20:40and walk away so proud because others have seen that they've
- 20:44given to God. Christ says that's the only
- 20:48reward they're going to get because they seek praise from
- 20:53man. Others are are driven by the
- 20:58ambition for more possessions, more things, more object.
- 21:05It's like the rich, the rich fool when the Lord said man's
- 21:10life does not consist in the abundance of things in which he
- 21:13possesses. And we read that, but we, we
- 21:17still still want just a little bit more of this or a little bit
- 21:21more of that and possessions and having them drive me for more.
- 21:29Then then there's the lust for power to be in charge, to be in
- 21:35control, to be recognized as an all powerful one.
- 21:38Like like Lucifer. He was driven by power, by
- 21:42pride. He wanted to be just like God.
- 21:45He wanted to be worshipped like God.
- 21:50It was driven by power others are hungry for, for pleasure.
- 21:57Remember the prodigal son? He wanted his inheritance.
- 22:01What drove him pleasure. He spent all of his money and
- 22:06all of his efforts on wanton sin.
- 22:09When he recognized the very end, it was empty.
- 22:11It was nothing that got him nowhere.
- 22:17Classic example. Of course you know Solomon says
- 22:24these words in Ecclesiastes 2 verse #9 I became great and
- 22:30increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem.
- 22:34My wisdom also stood by me. All that my eyes desired.
- 22:39I did not refuse them. Whatever my eyes saw, whatever
- 22:46they wanted, I did not refuse them.
- 22:51I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure.
- 22:56Whatever pleasure I wanted, I obtained, for my heart was
- 23:01pleased because of all my labor, and this was my reward for all
- 23:06my labor. In other words, I built gardens
- 23:11and I built more gardens. I built houses, and I built more
- 23:15houses. I obtained horses, and then I
- 23:18obtained more horses. I obtained wives, and then I
- 23:23obtained even more wives. Whatever my eyes desired,
- 23:27whatever my heart pleasured, whatever I wanted to do,
- 23:30whatever I labored on, I just purchased, obtained, received.
- 23:40Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had
- 23:42done, and the labor which I exerted, and behold, all was
- 23:48vanity and striving after the wind, and there was no profit
- 23:54under the sun. Solomon is a great example of
- 24:01the passion to hunger and the thirst for for possessions or
- 24:07for wives or for more power, more pleasure.
- 24:14And he had the opportunity at his fingertips to do whatever he
- 24:17wanted. None of us do, but he did.
- 24:23And the end result was what? It's empty.
- 24:27It's driving after the wind. There's nothing there.
- 24:33So Christ says I've I've come to offer you fulfillment.
- 24:39I've come to offer you satisfaction, and those who
- 24:44hunger and thirst for righteousness, they will be
- 24:50satisfied. The drive you have on the inside
- 24:55of you is to be directed only to Me.
- 25:01And when you find me, you find a life.
- 25:05You find everything there is in life, but you must hunger and
- 25:11thirst for righteousness. That's the positive aspect.
- 25:16What is that? Well, in the Old Testament, it's
- 25:20unique to understand that righteousness is equated with
- 25:23salvation. So when you're hungering and
- 25:27thirsting for righteousness, to be reconciled to God, to be
- 25:32right with God, that's what salvation is.
- 25:35And those who hunger and thirst for justification, for
- 25:39reconciliation, for righteousness, our Lord gave us
- 25:45His righteousness at the cross when we embrace Him as our Lord
- 25:48and Savior. And so we had this positional
- 25:52righteousness that we have, we are declared right before God,
- 25:55not because of anything that we have done, but because of
- 25:57everything that He has done. And He says, when you hunger and
- 26:02thirst for righteousness, not just positional righteousness,
- 26:08but practical righteousness, not not just salvation, but
- 26:12sanctification, when when you pursue to be set apart unto me
- 26:18for my purposes, when you pursue to be holy as I am holy, when
- 26:24you set your eyes, when you set your heart, when you set your
- 26:27mind on on following after me, you will be satisfied.
- 26:34Your search will be complete. You'll recognize that everything
- 26:38you've longed for, I will give you.
- 26:43Everything that you need I have, but you must hunger and thirst
- 26:50for righteousness. That's why you would say in
- 26:53Matthew 6, Seek ye first. My Kingdom and My righteousness
- 27:00make the priority. It's all about My Kingdom and
- 27:03I'm a righteous king, and I want you to be as righteous as I am
- 27:07righteous and I want you to pursue me and I all these other
- 27:12things will be added unto you, but you got to make me the
- 27:14priority. That's why Paul says in Romans
- 27:171417, the Kingdom of heaven is not eating and drinking.
- 27:22It's righteousness, it's peace, it's joy in the Holy Spirit.
- 27:29When you're righteous, when you declared right before God,
- 27:32you've been reconciled to God. You're no longer his enemy,
- 27:35you're on his side. You have peace, and those who
- 27:39have peace have joy. And that's what my Kingdom is,
- 27:44righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
- 27:51So important to understand. Interesting that this word
- 27:55righteousness is used seven times in Matthew's gospel, five
- 28:04times in the Sermon on the Mount.
- 28:09Only one other gospel writer mentions the word righteousness,
- 28:18but Matthew mentions it quite frequently.
- 28:21Why? Because the only way to get into
- 28:24the Kingdom is to obtain the righteousness of the king.
- 28:28He's come to present the Kingdom.
- 28:34So the condition is simply this. You hunger, you are thirsty for
- 28:41righteousness. And if you are, you'll be
- 28:46satisfied, which tells us the consequences.
- 28:53The consequences are three. You'll be happy, you'll be holy,
- 29:01yet you'll still be hungry, you'll still be thirsty.
- 29:05He says blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
- 29:10righteousness. The the contentment, the joy,
- 29:15the the blessing that comes. Listen to what Psalm one O 7
- 29:18says it says, For he satisfieth the longing soul, and fillet the
- 29:24hungry soul with goodness. Psalm 34, verse #10 They that
- 29:31seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.
- 29:37Jeremiah 31. My people shall be satisfied
- 29:40with my goodness, saith the Lord.
- 29:44Luke 153. Mary says He has filled the
- 29:48hungry with good things. John 4/14 Whosoever drinketh of
- 29:54the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.
- 29:57John 635I in the bread of life, he that cometh to me shall never
- 30:04hunger. Wow, there is something about
- 30:10what God does in the life of an individual that satisfies his
- 30:15soul. He says, You come to me, you're
- 30:19blessed, you come to me, you'll be happy #2 you'll be holy.
- 30:25Why? Because you would have obtained
- 30:26my righteousness. And Peter would say, I want you
- 30:30to be holy as the Lord God is holy.
- 30:34I want you to be holy in all your conduct, not just some of
- 30:37your conduct. Peter says, I want you to be
- 30:40holy in all of your conduct. Why?
- 30:43Because the Lord your God is a holy God.
- 30:46In other words, I, I want you to be set apart when when you are
- 30:50pursuing God, when you are hungry and thirsty for
- 30:53righteousness, you are, You are set apart unto God for his
- 30:57purposes. That's what it means to to be
- 30:59holy or to be sanctified. You are set apart unto God for
- 31:04his purposes and all of a sudden you are.
- 31:08You are an antithesis to society because you pursue what they
- 31:16don't pursue. You are driven inwardly by God
- 31:23to God for more of God and they are not and they don't
- 31:29understand that. But the the consequences of
- 31:38pursuing and hungering for righteousness is happiness,
- 31:45holiness, yet you're still hungry.
- 31:53In other words, you're satisfied, but yet you're still
- 31:57not satisfied. You know, you've, you've been in
- 32:00that place where, where you just sit down.
- 32:03You've had a long day and you come home and, and you, you make
- 32:07your favorite cup of coffee and your wife has just made those
- 32:11beautiful chocolate chip cookies with macadamia nuts in them.
- 32:15And they're really warm coming out of the oven.
- 32:19And you, you, you set that, that warm cookie right there.
- 32:22And then you, you've got your coffee right there.
- 32:24And, and maybe you'll, you'll, you'll dip the, the cookie into
- 32:28the coffee and, but, but you will sip your coffee and eat
- 32:32that beautiful warm cookie and say, ah, I am satisfied.
- 32:40But as soon as that cookie's done, you're unsatisfied.
- 32:45And so you want another cookie and you say, I'm so satisfied.
- 32:52But then you want another one. And the next day you want more.
- 32:57See, that's, that's the way it is.
- 32:58That's the way it is with with righteousness.
- 33:02You're hungry and thirsty for righteousness and God says I
- 33:06will satisfy you. But then again, you're never
- 33:09really fully satisfied. In fact, the psalmist says it
- 33:13this way, Psalm 1715 I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy
- 33:19likeness. When I'm finally dead, which I'm
- 33:25really alive and I'm in heaven, and I awake with your likeness,
- 33:29then I will fully be satisfied. Remember, Remember Paul, he said
- 33:37in Second Timothy 112 I know whom I have believed, and then
- 33:44persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed
- 33:47unto him until that day. I know whom I have believed.
- 33:51And yet in Philippians 3 he says, Oh, that I may know him,
- 33:55that there was a hunger to know God even all the more.
- 33:58He knew him, but he wanted to know Him all the more.
- 34:02And that's what happens to those who hunger and thirst for
- 34:05righteousness. It's whenever you are parched in
- 34:09your mouth and you want some water and you drink the water.
- 34:13Listen, having drank the water doesn't mean you won't be
- 34:16thirsty tomorrow. You will be.
- 34:19Or the next day. You're going to continually be
- 34:22thirsty in the physical realm when you eat your dinner
- 34:26tonight. Well, maybe you've already eaten
- 34:27dinner, you're satisfied, but when you wake up for breakfast
- 34:30tomorrow, you're still going to be hungry.
- 34:32With The same is true with scripture.
- 34:35The same is true with righteousness.
- 34:37The same is true with learning to live a holy separated life
- 34:41unto God. All that is true, you just want
- 34:44more of it. I had a had a phone call today
- 34:50with Don and and Wanda Slavin and they had just listened to
- 34:55last Sunday's sermon and they were praying for me and for our
- 35:03church and I called them out of the blue.
- 35:06Just want to know how they work because they haven't been here.
- 35:08Of course they can't get here because Don is is too weak to
- 35:15drive and and Wanda is going to have a procedure pretty soon and
- 35:20so she can't really drive until that time.
- 35:22And so they're stuck at home. And she said to me, you know, I
- 35:26heard your sermon. And she said, you know, I, I, I
- 35:29would love to drag my family to church with me.
- 35:32At the end. I hear the gospel of John, she
- 35:34said, but I can't even drag myself out of my house to get to
- 35:37church to drag somebody else with me.
- 35:40But she wants to be here and Don wants to be here.
- 35:45These can't make it, but but they're the, the example of I
- 35:50want to be here. I can't be here, but I just
- 35:52hunger and thirst for more of the word and they said you know
- 35:57what physically we're we're we're hurting, but spiritually
- 36:00we are we are alive and our souls are are filled with the
- 36:06joy of the Lord. What a great testimony.
- 36:10Beautiful couple love the Lord. They want to be here so bad, so
- 36:16bad. They just can't physically make
- 36:21it. Same is true with Jan and Jerry
- 36:26Simmons spoke with her today and they're just having a hard time.
- 36:32And she says, oh, I just miss church.
- 36:35I miss my church family. I just long to be there.
- 36:40There, there's this hunger, there's this thirst to be with
- 36:44the people of God, to hear the word of God.
- 36:47I wonder if you have that. I would hope you do.
- 36:51I mean, you're here. So I would assume that that
- 36:53that's part of your DNA that you, you want to be here because
- 36:57you're hungry and thirsty for righteousness and you want to
- 37:00know what the Bible says and you, you want to grow and you
- 37:02walk with the Lord. That's why that's why you're
- 37:04here. I don't want to assume that
- 37:07necessarily, but I don't think the best of you, right?
- 37:12And so you, you got to realize that, that, that that's what
- 37:15happens. God says blessed are those who
- 37:19hunger and thirst for righteousness.
- 37:20These are the happy people. These are the holy people
- 37:24because they're saved. They're set apart unto God for
- 37:28my purpose, but they're still wanting more holiness.
- 37:33They're still wanting more happiness because they hunger
- 37:36more and more for my righteousness #3 detailing the
- 37:47characteristics. What are the characteristics of
- 37:51those who hunger and thirst for righteousness?
- 37:53There are many of them. I'm just going to give you 41.
- 37:59Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness squelch all their
- 38:05sin. They separate themselves from
- 38:10their sin. They silence their sin.
- 38:15In other words, they want nothing to do with evil.
- 38:22Psalm 97, verse #10 says You who love the Lord hate evil.
- 38:29Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are increasingly
- 38:36dissatisfied with substitutes. It is our the mind recognizes
- 38:46sin, the heart is repulsed by sin, and the will refuses to
- 38:52sin. Those who hunger and thirst for
- 38:57righteousness that they want to suppress, squelch, separate,
- 39:01silence, all sin in their lives. Jerry Bridges, in his book The
- 39:08Pursuit of Holiness, said these words.
- 39:13He says, I realized that my personal life's objective
- 39:17regarding holiness was less than that of the apostle John.
- 39:22He was saying, in effect, make it your aim not to sin.
- 39:27As I thought about this, I realized that deep within my
- 39:31heart, my real aim was not to sin very much.
- 39:37Can you imagine a soldier going into battle with the aim of not
- 39:40getting hit very much? The very suggestion is
- 39:45ridiculous. His aim is not to get hit at
- 39:48all. Yet if we have not made a
- 39:52commitment to holiness, without exception, we are like a soldier
- 39:56going into battle with the aim of not getting hit very much.
- 40:02We can be sure if that is our aim, we will be hit not with
- 40:07bullets but with temptation, over and over.
- 40:13Again, so the will just refuses to sin.
- 40:20Why? Because I'm hungry and thirsting
- 40:23for that which satisfies my soul.
- 40:27The righteousness of God #2 the life that hungers and thirst for
- 40:35righteousness not only squelches all sin, but surrenders every
- 40:40substitute. Surrenders every substitute.
- 40:49A truly spiritual man will never be satisfied with that which is
- 40:55material or that which is temporal.
- 41:02In fact, a hungry man doesn't want food and a new shirt, he
- 41:12just wants food. A thirsty man just wants water,
- 41:17not water and something else. And so you surrender every
- 41:24substitute. Psalm 119 verse #20 My soul is
- 41:29crushed with longing after Thy ordinances at all times.
- 41:40Vance Havner was was a a country preacher.
- 41:43I don't know if you've read any of his books or not.
- 41:47He's got a a multitude of books in his his book entitled Pepper
- 41:56and Salt. He says this.
- 42:00He says we have too many casual Christians who dabble in
- 42:03everything but are not committed to anything.
- 42:08They have a a nodding acquaintance with a score of
- 42:12subjects but are sold on nothing.
- 42:16Of course I'm interested in church, but with my club and my
- 42:22lodge and my golf and my activities and my stamp
- 42:26collecting and and my ceramics and my African violets, I just
- 42:31can't get too excited about religion.
- 42:35Our Lord had no place in his program for casual disciples.
- 42:42It was all or it was nothing. That's so true.
- 42:49Christ demands everything. Come after me, come after me,
- 42:56deny yourself. Take up your cross and follow
- 42:59me. Don't follow me and someone else
- 43:02Follow me. Serve me, honor me.
- 43:09The person who hungers and thirst for righteousness, he
- 43:12surrenders every substitute. Anything that will sort of take
- 43:18the place of God, he wants to get rid of because it never
- 43:24satisfies #3 #3 He searches the Scriptures.
- 43:38He searches the Scriptures. Psalm 26 verse #9 With my soul
- 43:43have I desired Thee in the night, and with my Spirit within
- 43:49me will I seek Thee early. There's something about a hungry
- 43:57man that that searches for the bread of life.
- 44:03Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
- 44:05proceeds out of the mouth of God.
- 44:08And so he searches the scriptures.
- 44:10Psalm 63, verse number 10. God, early will I seek thee.
- 44:13Jeremiah 1516. What did Jeremiah say?
- 44:15Thy words were found, and I did eat them, and they were the joy
- 44:18and the rejoicing of my heart. He said that knowing that all
- 44:24the people he preached to would never listen, never repent, and
- 44:30never follow his God. So you realize that the joy was
- 44:35not in the response of the people.
- 44:38The joy was in the opportunity to hear the word, digest the
- 44:43Word, feed on the word of God. That's what a hungry man does.
- 44:50That's what a thirsty man does. This is this is the living word
- 44:54of God. This is living water.
- 44:57This is bread of life. This is what satisfies #4 the
- 45:06one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness is satisfied even
- 45:11in suffering. Satisfied even in suffering.
- 45:17Proverbs 27 Seven To the hungry soul every bitter thing is
- 45:26sweet. The hungry soul remains content,
- 45:32The hungry soul remains satisfied.
- 45:36The hungry soul remains pursuing righteousness in spite of
- 45:41troubles and trials, in spite of persecution and affliction, in
- 45:45spite of difficulties and hardship.
- 45:49Because to him, even in the bitterness of life there was
- 45:54sweetness. Because he knows his God is at
- 45:56work. His God is a plan is God always
- 46:01knows what's best and so he continues to pursue
- 46:06righteousness. Where do we go from here?
- 46:123 things. One, you need to develop an
- 46:19appetite for the righteousness of God, need to develop the
- 46:29appetite for the bread of life and for the living water.
- 46:35And Psalm 34, eight says, O taste and see that the Lord is
- 46:41good. I wonder what your appetite is
- 46:45like for the word of God. I wonder if there's a hunger in
- 46:50your soul to learn more and more and more.
- 46:54I wonder if there's a thirst in your soul that caused you to
- 46:57want to drink from the living water.
- 47:01Do you have the kind of appetite that can never be satisfied with
- 47:05just one sermon or just one reading of the scriptures or
- 47:10just memorizing one verse? Do you have the kind of appetite
- 47:15that once you've memorized one verse, you you want to memorize
- 47:182? Once you've read 1 chapter, you
- 47:20want to read 2. Once you've heard one sermon,
- 47:22you want to hear the whole series.
- 47:24Once you are with the people of God, you want to continue to be
- 47:27with them. There's this driving force in
- 47:30your life that moves you further and further to hunger and thirst
- 47:34for more of the salvation and sanctification that comes to the
- 47:38righteousness of Christ Himself. You need to develop an appetite
- 47:45for the things of God, Peter says as newborn babes desire the
- 47:53pure milk of the word that you may grow thereby.
- 47:59If if you have tasted that the Lord is gracious, if you have
- 48:10tasted the the grace of God, if you look, if you've come to
- 48:13taste just the goodness of God, then you should be like a a
- 48:18newborn babe screaming for more of God, never getting enough.
- 48:24There's so many times we are unwind to surrender our
- 48:28substitutes. We're unwilling to squelch the
- 48:31sin in our lives. We're unwilling to search the
- 48:36Scriptures because we think down deep that maybe the Lord isn't
- 48:44enough. There's got to be something
- 48:47else, but there's not. Just read the book of Jeremiah,
- 48:53Just read Ecclesiastes. Just read the Bible.
- 48:59It comes only from the Lord. Develop an appetite #2 Delight
- 49:05yourself in the Lord. You're not going to delight
- 49:07yourself in the Lord unless you develop an appetite for the
- 49:09Lord. Psalmist said.
- 49:12You know the verse, Psalm 37 verse #4 delight yourself in the
- 49:16Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
- 49:20Augustine said it well. Thou has made us for thyself,
- 49:24and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee and then
- 49:30deny the world. Deny the things of the world.
- 49:36John the Baptist did. He was raised in the priesthood.
- 49:42His father was a priest, but he denied the things of the world.
- 49:48He didn't dress like all the other priests.
- 49:52He didn't eat what all the other priests ate.
- 49:56He certainly didn't speak and preach like the other priests.
- 50:02He was the antithesis to Judaism.
- 50:06He lived a different kind of way.
- 50:09He denied the things of the world over in Psalm 58.
- 50:27Psalm 58, listen, I'm sorry, Isaiah 58, Isaiah chapter 58,
- 50:39listen to what the Lord says. Verse 13.
- 50:44If because of the Sabbath you turn your foot from doing your
- 50:55own pleasure on my holy day, I think that's just so good.
- 51:03If he says because of the Sabbath, because of the day,
- 51:08that's a holy day. If you set aside my day to honor
- 51:18me. If you do that and call the
- 51:23Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable and honor
- 51:29it, desisting from your own ways, This is everything we just
- 51:37said to you. If you're, if you're willing to,
- 51:41to set aside one day for me, if you're willing to separate
- 51:49yourself from everything else, desist from doing anything else,
- 51:55focus on me, he says. Desist from your own ways, from
- 52:04seeking your own pleasure and speaking your own word, then you
- 52:19will take delight in the Lord. That is just so clear, God.
- 52:28God says you need to set apart a day for me.
- 52:32You need to keep it holy. You need to stop seeking other
- 52:37pleasures. You need to desist from your own
- 52:42way. Stop thinking that your way is
- 52:44better than my way. You do that.
- 52:50You will take delight in the Lord.
- 52:53Listen to this and I will make you ride on the heights of the
- 52:57earth, and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob, your
- 53:01father, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
- 53:08God says I'm going to, this is what I'm going to do, but this
- 53:14is the requirement. It's all about hungering and
- 53:18thirsting for me. So you're willing to set aside
- 53:23every substitute? Search only for me.
- 53:29Stop seeking the pleasures of your life.
- 53:33Focus solely upon me. Search my scriptures.
- 53:39Deny yourself, and you'll be satisfied.
- 53:45That's God's promise to you. It's God's promise to me as He
- 53:50sits on the the North Shore of the Sea of Galilee and all these
- 53:54people are all around him. He says, you know what, I really
- 53:58want you to be blessed. So if you're willing to
- 54:03recognize that that you have nothing to offer me, that the
- 54:06Kingdom is yours, if you're willing to to mourn over your
- 54:12sin, I will. I will comfort you.
- 54:17If you're willing to be meek, I'll give you the earth.
- 54:25And if you hunger for my righteousness, I guarantee your
- 54:33satisfaction. That's what the Lord says.
- 54:40I just happen to believe that. I wonder if you do.
- 54:46I would trust that that's the case.
- 54:48Let's pray together. Lord God, thank you for today.
- 54:53We are a blessed people to have been able to spend a few moments
- 54:57in your word. We are grateful, Lord, for how
- 55:02it is you make all these promises.
- 55:07And yet, Lord, so many times we we are driven to move away from
- 55:11you by that inner compulsion to be satisfied.
- 55:17And mostly it's just temporal, material things that never last.
- 55:21But we just keep doing it over and over and over again.
- 55:26And you're a patient, you're kind, you're loving, and you're
- 55:29graceful. And you keep calling us back to
- 55:33you. Oh, everyone who thirsts, come
- 55:38to me, come to me. Those of you who are hungry,
- 55:45come to me. I will feed you with the bread
- 55:50of life. I will give you the the water of
- 55:54life. I will satisfy the deepest needs
- 55:59of your soul so that you will delight in me.
- 56:02And when you do, you'll be fully, totally satisfied.
- 56:11And yet you'll still want more. You'll still cry for more, as it
- 56:18should be, until the day we awake in Your presence, and we
- 56:26will be fully like you till that day comes.
- 56:29Lord, give us the drive and the motivation to pursue only Christ
- 56:36in Jesus name, Amen.
