Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / FSD Self-Driving Software Set to Transform China's Roads in 2024
Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:05This. Is a show where we discuss.
- 0:07The Critical. Crossroads The Shape SpaceX,
- 0:09Tesla X The Boring Company. And Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will. Walden Tesla is preparing to
- 0:17register its Full Self Driving software with Chinese
- 0:19authorities aiming to launch the advanced feature this year, And
- 0:23it's according to three sources familiar with this matter now.
- 0:26The move is part of Tesla's broadest strategy to expand its
- 0:29presence in China, its second largest market.
- 0:31And additionally, the company is considering offering the FSD
- 0:34software as a monthly subscription to his Chinese
- 0:36customers. Now securing registration with
- 0:39China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the MIIT
- 0:44will allow Tesla to conduct internal testing of the FSD
- 0:47system using its employees on public roads in China.
- 0:51This testing phase is a precursor to making the software
- 0:53available to Chinese users as an upgrade in the coming months.
- 0:57And currently, Tesla offers 2 less advanced versions of its
- 1:00Autopilot driver assist system in China.
- 1:03The FSD system, which Tesla currently sells for a one time
- 1:06fee of ¥64,000 that's approximately $8800 US, might
- 1:11also be available as a monthly subscription fee, likely around
- 1:15the $100 mark. About $98 apparently.
- 1:18Now the introduction of a subscription model could attract
- 1:20more customers by lowering the upfront cost area.
- 1:24Now, Tesla's expansion plans include the potential licensing
- 1:27of its FSD software to other automakers in China, and the
- 1:31strategy could diversify Tesla's revenue streams amiss a
- 1:34competitive and discount driven market.
- 1:36Notably, Tesla sales in China have declined by 7.6% in the
- 1:41first four months of this year due to increased competition
- 1:44from local EV manufacturers. Yel Zhang, managing director of
- 1:49Shanghai based consultancy Automotive Foresight, said that
- 1:53Tesla's introduction of FSD in China would compel other EV
- 1:57startups to expedite the research and development
- 2:00efforts. The competitive pressure shows
- 2:03the significance of Tesla's technology and the competition
- 2:08between all these automakers and the roll out of FSD in China
- 2:12aligns with a strategic shift by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to power the
- 2:16development of its self driving system using data collected and
- 2:19processed within China. Now this approach not only
- 2:22leverages local data but also adheres to regulatory
- 2:25requirements regarding data localization.
- 2:29Now, Tesla aims to introduce version 12 of the FSD software
- 2:33in China, and Musk has expressed confidence that this version
- 2:37paves the way for fully autonomous driving systems.
- 2:40The software's evolution reflects Tesla's ongoing
- 2:42commitment to refining its self driving tech, and Tesla will now
- 2:47join a competitive field in China, where at least 10
- 2:50automakers and suppliers, including Huawei and Zping, are
- 2:54developing Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities.
- 2:57And unlike Tesla, some competitors like Lee Auto and
- 3:00Zping offer similar systems for free on high end models, while
- 3:04others, such as Neo provide trial periods at no cost.
- 3:08The Level 2 systems, including Tesla's FSD, still require
- 3:12active driver supervision and hands on control.
- 3:15However, Elon Musk has indicated that more fully autonomous
- 3:19vehicles are on the horizon. Tesla plans to reveal additional
- 3:22details about its robo taxi program in August, which could
- 3:25provide insights into his future autonomous vehicle strategy.
- 3:29A Tesla's autonomous driving system is built on an end to end
- 3:32neural network, a distinct departure from rule based
- 3:35algorithms. The AI enables the system to
- 3:38learn faster and make more human like decisions, a capability
- 3:42that sets Tesla apart from its competitors.
- 3:45Other companies like Huawei are following Tesla's lead by
- 3:48developing end to end AI models for autonomous driving.
- 3:51Despite this, catching up with Tesla in terms of data and
- 3:54computing power remains a significant challenge for
- 3:56rivals. Now this is going to be a
- 4:00competitive market in the next year and these other companies
- 4:04will hop on the bandwagon and get more processing compute.
- 4:09Tesla's advantage lies in a supercomputer, Dojo, which
- 4:12trains the FSD system using video data from millions of
- 4:15Tesla vehicles. This connected network, the
- 4:18largest fleet of its kind globally, provides Tesla with an
- 4:21unparalleled data advantage, essentially for advancing its
- 4:24self driving capabilities. And in parallel with the FSD
- 4:27rollout, Tesla has partnered with Baidu for in vehicle
- 4:31mapping and navigation services. This collaboration addresses one
- 4:34of the critical requirements for launching advanced self driving
- 4:38features in China, ensuring accurate lane level navigation
- 4:42and mapping. Now, Tesla initially engaged
- 4:45Baidu for mapping services way back in 2020, but the
- 4:48partnership has now intensified to support more advanced
- 4:51autonomous driving functionalities.
- 4:53The development follows Musk's recent visit to China, where he
- 4:57sought approval for the FSD software to counter declining
- 5:00revenues. The suite of FSD features, while
- 5:03requiring constant oversight, aims to enhance Tesla's
- 5:06autonomous driving offerings. The company's pricing strategy
- 5:09for FSD in China mirrors its approach in US, where customers
- 5:13can either purchase the software outright or subscribe monthly.
- 5:16Tesla also offers Enhanced Autopilot EAP in China and half
- 5:20the price of FSD has introduced subscription options for EAP,
- 5:25allowing customers to experience the technology for a monthly
- 5:27fee. This flexibility and pricing and
- 5:30access models could boost adoption rates among China
- 5:33consumers, and recent developments such as Tesla
- 5:36Shanghai factory passing data security requirements have
- 5:39facilitated the broader acceptance of Tesla vehicles and
- 5:41restricted areas within China. This compliance with national
- 5:45standards enhances the credibility and marketability of
- 5:48Tesla's products. Now, the FSD software rollout in
- 5:51China is anticipated to generate significant interest and
- 5:54discussion and revenue. Given the competitive nature of
- 5:57the Chinese EV market and the technological advancements it
- 6:00represents. The company's strategic moves
- 6:03and partnerships aims to solidify its position as a
- 6:06leader in autonomous driving technology in China and
- 6:10worldwide. Hey, thank you so much for
