- 3:17more there. This week's fifty fifty Friday went live at nine o'clock at WCHS
- 3:22network dot com. Let's bring in Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charleston. You
- 3:24made association with our adopt Me please Speed of the Week. Hannah, Good
- 3:28morning, How are you? I'm great? How are you? I am
- 3:30fine? Hannah. This is Doug scaff Doug scaff me and Hannah. Good
- 3:34morning, Hannah. It's great to have you on here with us. Thanks
- 3:37all right, before we get into our adopt Me, please ped of the
- 3:39Week. I gotta ask about tucks and tales you out of this past Saturday
- 3:43night at the Capital Market. Unfortunately I could not be there. How did
- 3:46everything go? It was great, It was very successful. We raised a
- 3:51lot of money for it for the shelter, and I mean it was just
- 3:55just a really really good night. I was there for a little while.
- 3:59It was great. There was often music to people, it was it was
- 4:03amazing. Well, it looked like I saw the pictures online, Doug.
- 4:06I know you probably saw him as well as I saw him. I've been
- 4:09to that. I've attended to before. It's always a great event. It's
- 4:11it's it's lovely to see all the costumes and then the festivites of all the
- 4:15pictures and the dogs, the ones that come in person and not and share
- 4:17those stories of their pets. Yeah, it's always good stuff. All right,
- 4:21let's get to this week's dot me please pet of the Weekend. A
- 4:24picture posted is always Dave All on Radio, on Facebook and at Dave a
- 4:28seventy on Twitter. This is Petunia. Tell Us about Petunia. Yeah,
- 4:32so, um, Petunia is a very very pretty I would have to say
- 4:38maybe pity or something. Um, she's definitely mixed with something. But I
- 4:43would say just by looking at her, you would say that she is a
- 4:46pit or maybe has a little bit of boxer in her face or something.
- 4:49But she does have that square head. She's black and white, she is
- 4:54a female, and she's eleven months old. She is kid friendly from what
- 5:00we have noticed. Of course, we always advised cautions for honestly forever,
- 5:04because you never know with dogs or with cats, even it doesn't matter,
- 5:09you know. And then she is good with other dogs. She put hers
- 5:14commer dogs, but she still likes to play. She still has some energy,
- 5:17so she still wants to play with dogs, but not dogs that are
- 5:23going to play super rough or super hyperactive. She is a beautiful Have we
- 5:28featured Petunia in the past here, because I was thinking maybe I think we
- 5:31may have had Petunia on the show in the past. You said she's been
- 5:34there since January, right, Yes, she has. She's been with us
- 5:38since January, so we've probably have done her before. But we're trying to
- 5:41push her because she has been here since January and she's creeping up to one
- 5:46of our longest residents. Yeah, that's what I was going to ask,
- 5:47you know, nor it seems like it she's she's overstayed or welcome a little
- 5:51bit looking for a fun home with kids. So what's the average time when
- 5:55i Ane was get adopted like them, Um, we usually have pretty like
- 6:00good turnout on dogs coming and then just going back out to a home.
- 6:05It's common, I would say for dogs to be there between like three to
- 6:10six months or so, especially ones that are like adult dogs that maybe are
- 6:15just like your average looking dog. People just kind of passed by them.
- 6:19But she is a really really good dog. She has them with us since
- 6:24January. She's never been adopted before. I don't even think she's been out
- 6:28in a foster home yet. But she doesn't have anything wrong. She does
- 6:32have a few medical things, but nothing that's like crazy she is. I
- 6:40believe when she came in she had it an injury from one of our playbooks
- 6:45or something, but that's it. Like she doesn't have anything lifelong or anything.
- 6:47So she is a really really good dog. She walks really well on
- 6:54the leash. She would be a great or a great dog for somebody who
- 6:58maybe wants to walk up hikes and stuff or even take on trips. Like
- 7:02she's just a really well well groom dog and she's eleven months old, which
- 7:08means that probably got well, I'll tell you. I mean, I'm sure
- 7:11she has a lot of energy, so you know, it probably would be
- 7:13better to have somebody that is physically fit enough to be able to take her
- 7:15on walks and things of that nature. And one of the things that I
- 7:18loved about her, you said that she is great with kids. I mean,
- 7:21this dog just absolutely loves kids. And what a better time going in
- 7:25the summertime too, to have a dog play with your kids outside. It's
- 7:28perfect time to go and adopt Petunia. Yeah, it's Doug is absolutely right,
- 7:33So we hope to get to Petunia. Petunia adopted. Go over to
- 7:38dave aland Radio and Facebook and at dave a seventy on Twitter if you want
- 7:41to see a picture, and then you can contact folks at the Canal Charleston.
- 7:43You made association for more information, and I know you have an event
- 7:46tomorrow up at Habitat for Humanity three store, three O one Piedmont Road.
- 7:51I love this name retails as in tail, as in dog, cat and
- 7:57other animal tails. Building homes for all it's new until four tomorrow. Tell
- 8:01us about them. Yeah, so it's nothing, nothing crazy, but it
- 8:05is an adoption event that we're having, so we're turning. We're hoping that
- 8:09we have lots of people come out and look at the animals that we have.
- 8:13I believe we're going to be bringing puppies if we have any, which
- 8:18I'm sure we will because we do still. And then also if we have
- 8:22any kittens, we're going to be bringing those two because we're gonna have our
- 8:24caravan, so so'll be. We'll have a sea, you'll have food with
- 8:30the hot water. But we just need people to come out and adopt them.
- 8:31We're gonna bring out some cute little babies. So come on. It
- 8:35is noon before, like you said, so we hope to see you.
- 8:39All right. It's good stuff again. It's happening tomorrow at the Habitat for
- 8:41Humanity Restore three o one Piedmont Road and Charleston. Get out there noon tole
- 8:46four cats, dogs all available, Hannah. I appreciate it. We'll talk
- 8:48to you soon. Thanks a lot, Thank you talking with you. An
- 8:52all right hand a garden from the canal, Charleston. You main an association
- 8:54with this week's adopt me. Please put of the week eleven months old Tunia
- 9:00it's a dog's name, Doug. Are you Are you a pet guy?
- 9:03You're a family have passed. You know. I love dogs and I have
- 9:05three little boys and they love chasing the dogs around as well too. When
- 9:09I was growing up, I had a Chinese sharpey, the kind of the
- 9:11dog with all the wrinkles on it. It was so cute and it was
- 9:13it was just cuddly. It had the wrinkles. It was hard to keep
- 9:16clean though, but it was just one of those that you see on TV.
- 9:18And then I have a I love chasing doground. I had one that
- 9:22was kind of a it was I was a little beagle mixed thing, you
- 9:24know. It was a mutt adopted as well too. When I was in
- 9:26college. You know, I thought it was cool to have one in the
- 9:28frat house. But that's always interesting and indeed, uh so, uh all
- 9:33right. Uh. The dog is again posted Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and
- 9:37at Dave A seventy on Twitter. It's Petunia, eleven months old. Not
- 9:39fixed you, but will be social. Butterfly Hannah tells this very kid friendly,
- 9:43prefers smaller dogs, loves to play. Came in in January. It's
- 9:48Astray and it's been there for a while. We need to get adopted,
- 9:50like today or this weekend. I hope that somebody finds a loving home for
- 9:54him tomorrow. At that event, it would be a great, great thing
- 9:56to do. And again as good point you brought up dog about having,
- 10:00you know, getting into warm weather once they can. This dog loves to
- 10:01ride in the car. You can take it to the beach, she can
- 10:03take it to the park. Take her to Jim Strawn's house. You know
- 10:07that the walk around the the the the palatial estate that Jim Strawn has.
- 10:15Go ahead, Jim, all right, I need a microphone for Jim to

- 14:56gonna be crazy when we come home. He looked at like, I have

- 15:18I just got a show and you said that, I just a chill
- 15:20went down my body. We had these of the Hustums Pizza, well,
- 15:24the Custins Pizza two, but no live on the levee. Man, this
- 15:28is crazy. We had the press conference on Wednesday over at the Overlook and
- 15:31just a beautiful day and a great setting, a great vibe. And I
- 15:35say it every year and I got the host of press conference. It just
- 15:39feels like my adult Christmas morning now as a child. I just I can't
- 15:41wait to see who's coming. I can't wait the unofficial beginning of summer.
- 15:46May twenty six, we're going to launch our twentieth season of the Moses Auto
- 15:50Group live on Levy. Twenty seasons. Moses has been with us. Jeremy
- 15:54was there the other day. Moses has been with us. This will be
- 15:56their fifteenth year. I'll never forget getting Suzanne and Bob on board. That
- 16:02went over to see them in downtown, and they've been just a great part
- 16:04of this. They loved the family atmosphere. They're a family business, so
- 16:07yeah, that's a great partnership for them. But we got some great music
- 16:11common opening night May the twenty six. That night, we're gonna salute our
- 16:15veterans and debut and I know we're not veterans, but we love to salute
- 16:18and we love to honor our veterans, So a veterans night to open things
- 16:22up with, and we're gonna have fireworks that night. Hair Supply was at
- 16:26the press conference and Hair Supply will be the headliner that night. They're there,
- 16:30their hair, they're just they have so much hair. Yeah, they're
- 16:33Lario and the character. To see the picture in the paper, Oh yeah,
- 16:40yeah, I ken he captured at Gray my boy straight out of logan
- 16:44camera, straight out ye la. So I don't know. They're everywhere.
- 16:48Yeah, Supply goes everywhere. They're playing together, going around. I'm not
- 16:52gonna be able to hit all the highlights, but I do want you know.
- 16:55John's going to do his thing again this year. It's a tribute to
- 16:56the Who. I always want people to understand it's not a Who tribute band.
- 17:00It's a tribute to the Who. There are two different things and that's
- 17:03what John does. We have another w TSQ night. We have a Fleetwood
- 17:07Mac. It's a Fleetwood Mac tribute ban. We do have a tribute band.
- 17:12Fleetwood Mac is coming. We're gonna stop doing the live on Levy.
- 17:18It's a little bit shorter this year. We're gonna stop. The final night
- 17:21will be August. The eighteenth instead of that Labor Day, a Friday,
- 17:25August the eighteenth will be the final one. And I think it was Amy's
- 17:27idea. May Or Goodwin. I think we're going to do back to School
- 17:30Night and we're going to really cater to the kids, have things for the
- 17:34kids, you know, have some back to school materials, just have a
- 17:37big night for kids to come down. And Salem is going to be the
- 17:41headline of that night. And kids just love him. Heck, I love
- 17:44him. I'm sixty three. I love him. So it'll be fun.
- 17:45He's high energy, and I think the kids will will have a blast.
- 17:49And then you know, you toss in you know, there were God and
- 17:52multifest and all of a sudden, you have it. Like Doug said,
- 17:56you have a heck of a summer and always something to do, whether you
- 17:59go to the Dirty Birds game or soccer tournaments or just get out on the
- 18:02river and hang out in a boat. They're just it's just an amazing opportunity.
- 18:07And we've become this Liva Levy has become kind of a destination. I
- 18:10don't care if you're from Charleston, the Kanaha Valley, but we have folks
- 18:12from Indianapolis, and Louisville come by, and Pittsburgh come down. People stop
- 18:15here on their way wherever they're going, and they come down to the levee
- 18:18and they're like wow. My favorite, My favorite story was from that guy
- 18:22from Indianapolis. He was just driving to the beach and he stopped and he
- 18:26came out and he said, are you in charge of this? I go
- 18:29no, I'm just the MC And he said, I'm from a big market.
- 18:32We don't do this in Indianapolis. This is unbelievable. But he said,
- 18:36you guys really have a going on. I felt really good about that.
- 18:37Well, it's exciting Jimmy. On Friday's, normally everyone's ready to exit
- 18:41town to go back home after they work. But now you see cars coming
- 18:44into the town starting at four o'clock to get that parking spot. It's it
- 18:45makes it live when the levee brings people back to Charleston before after all the
- 18:49Liven What a vision Tom Lane had. I always like to give Tom Lane
- 18:53some props. He's the father of Liva Levy. He and David Mulgard got
- 18:56together twenty one some years ago and said, hey, but what can we
- 19:00do this like this? Like Doug said, what can we do to keep
- 19:03people in town at five o'clock so they don't depart, And he said,
- 19:07listen, just do this little concert series. We didn't have it. We
- 19:10didn't have a canopy down there, we didn't have a stage down there.
- 19:12And the humble beginnings where somebody would pull a hay trailer down on the pickup
- 19:17truck and a band would get on the hay trailer and play for about twenty
- 19:21five or thirty people. That's how it started six weeks first season and now
- 19:25look at it now. So yeah, props to the city, props to
- 19:29Mayor Jones and David Mugard before the current administration, and Amy's just kept it
- 19:33going and it's it's going strong. It's fun. So yes, folks,
- 19:37hope to see you on May the twenty six. Is free to come down.
- 19:41The music starts at six thirty, The headliner goes on at seven forty
- 19:44five. We're always done at nine thirty. So it's always one of those
- 19:47things. It's a three hour fun pack, fun pack time for families.
- 19:51I don't care if you're four or one hundred and four. Come down.
- 19:52There's something down there for you. We have We have about twenty some vendors
- 19:57or more so, there's always a great variety of food, and get your
- 20:02favorite bed region, just stay hydrated and have a blast. I know,
- 20:06Dave, you've been down there. I've seen your boys down there. Duck.
- 20:07It doesn't get any better in Charleston, West Virginia than live on Levy
- 20:11on Friday nights in a hot summer with the breeze coming off of the river.
- 20:15It's just phenomenal. Even last night I was talking to somebody saying,
- 20:18you can't find something to do, and Charles, so we're gonna be talking
- 20:19about other event here after this, but we are something to do almost every
- 20:22weekend this summer. I have about thirty seconds for people that go, god,
- 20:26I just I just don't there's nothing to do. Jim, I don't
- 20:30know. This is just I go, well, I'll give him a little
- 20:32bit, and they go, no, I don't think that. Then I'm
- 20:33like, well, I tried, I'm out. I don't have time for
- 20:36him. I have time for people that have synergy and energy. We talked
- 20:40about that. McKinsey Spencer from for Festival on the show yesterday. McKenzie and
- 20:44I talked about she was part of the She was part of the announcement because
- 20:47we collaborate with Festival, we collaborate with Multifest, we collaborate with Bike,
- 20:51we collaborate with so many things. And that's what I was talking about at
- 20:53the press conference when I introduced the mayor, I said, synergy. She
- 20:56has so much synergy, and she worked so well in clab Rich with so
- 21:00many organizations, and she has to and so everything kind of dovetails together and
- 21:03goes hand in glove, and all of a sudden, you have so much
- 21:07fun things to do every single day, and I know every weekend you have
- 21:11something no excuse the zero zero excuse first show again, we'll be on Friday,
- 21:15May twenty six, coming in that morning. Okay, of course you
- 21:18are actually actually I won't. I won't be there. I'll be I'll be
- 21:22on vacation that week. But Dale k hosting, Dale Met co hosting it
- 21:26talk to coop in for the whole time. But the first the show is
- 21:32Friday, May the twenty six sets. The first one real quick Jim,
- 21:33one of the ones that really piqued my imagine. And I have the schedule
- 21:37posted on on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and at Dave Sebody on Twitter this
- 21:41Fleetwood Mac show Fleetwood Mac. It may say tk D mac uh the Fleetwood
- 21:45Mac tribute band. I'm a big, big, big Fleetwood Mac fan.
- 21:48If they do TUSK then I may go crazy, Yeah, because I love
- 21:52to us they John said they're one of the premier tribute bands in America right
- 21:57now traveling, so we were fortunate they get them. I want to mention
- 22:00this. You mentioned Fleetwood Mac, but right before they play, the opener
- 22:06that night is going to be the Battle of the Band's winner. And what
- 22:07we do for that is it's a Sternwheel Regatta event at Slack Plaza. And
- 22:11if you are not playing at Live on the Levee and you think you should
- 22:15be, by the way, we had two hundred and fifty bands submission,
- 22:18so this was not an easy task by the way, guys, but if
- 22:21you think you should be playing at Live on Levy, I would enter into
- 22:23the Battle of the bands. And that winner of Battle of the bands during
- 22:30the regatta is going to be the opener of Fleetwood Mac on July twenty first
- 22:33at Schoenbom Stage at Live on Level. So that's big stuff for a band.
- 22:37They can work their way in, they can work their way into Live
- 22:41on the levee. But I'm gonna take off, guys, I gotta run,
- 22:42and I there's the guy right behind me, the ones to jump on,
- 22:45mister Rick Cavitis here here, Rick, all right, all right,
- 22:48Jim, I appreciate it. May twenty six, and if again, if
- 22:51you want to see the whole schedule, I've got just posted on my Twitter
- 22:52page at Dave A seventy and also you can look at it on Dave Valor
- 22:56Radio on Facebook. Jim, I appreciate it, man, we'll talk so
- 23:00thanks A lot. Five eighty Live is presented in part by Travis Willard.

- 23:17Advisor. Travis Willard, Edward Jones member SIPC, Hollywood. Jeff Petties our
- 23:22producer today. This is what Fridays are like, scaff I mean, we
- 23:25just it's just in man, shuffle them out in amount. Rick Cabitaer is
- 23:30with us right now. Rick, how are you, ma'am? It's as
- 23:32a green Cincral station station. It certainly is. Rick, of course.
- 23:37Charleston Main Street's na Candy Board of Education. I want to talk about Foam
- 23:40on the Dome, originally set for tomorrow, but it's been postponed until July
- 23:45because of the threat of weather tomorrow. Yeah, we may we Leah and
- 23:48I in the office. We called the capital, we called our main sponsors
- 23:52and partners, board members, and made the decision um that it was best,
- 23:56I think for everyone's safety and um, for the for the overall health
- 24:02of the event in every possible way, just to go ahead and postponent Um.
- 24:06You know, people kind of get spooked whenever they see thunderstorms. Um.
- 24:10The new date is July twenty second. Yeah, so um, so
- 24:12we made the decision. We feel good about it. Um. You know,
- 24:15I think most people are just kind of hanging under their tickets. We're
- 24:18going to transfer them automatically to the new date. You don't have to do
- 24:19anything, you automatically get it. And if you do transfer your ticket to
- 24:22the new date we were going to we'll give you a ten dollar discount to
- 24:25October West, which will be September thirtieth of this year. Good stuff.
- 24:29So we were talking about there's something going on all the time. You found
- 24:32an open date. Probably just snuck it in there, and yeah, well
- 24:34it's probably I think it is one of the only open June was obviously totally
- 24:40out. There's so much going on in Charleston and June that's so exciting.
- 24:41Of course, Regatta and festival and Pride Week and all that. There's a
- 24:45lot of great stuff happening in June. So we didn't want to touch that.
- 24:48So we felt like July that that weekend of July was good year's this
- 24:52been going on though? This is the seventh Yeah, well it would have
- 24:55been the eighth if if COVID would have happened, So we don't count that.
- 24:59Yeah, yeah, that didn't you know, they didn't have normally,
- 25:02you know, we'd like to keep things up beating on Fridays. You actually
- 25:04said in mister Scaff's see just a few short weeks I did, Yeah,
- 25:07but but I didn't I didn't questions. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
- 25:11yeah, good luck, but it uh, you know, obviously it hasn't
- 25:15been the best two weeks for you, my friend. We all know the
- 25:18story about your house, so I don't want to get into all that.
- 25:18Everybody knows it, uh, but uh, I just want to talk about
- 25:22the outpouring of love and give you an opportunity to thank everyone uh in the
- 25:27Canal and the Canal Valley in Charleston area, because from what I have seen,
- 25:32all of these folks that have come together for you and your family.
- 25:34Uh, it's it's just been, it's been amazing. I just want to
- 25:37give you that opportunity. Yeah, I know, I appreciate that, Dave.
- 25:40I I do want to I'm so glad you gave you this opportunity because,
- 25:44um, you know you and I've sort of made this comment on my
- 25:48video that I put out the night after it happened. Um, you know
- 25:51you. You when you're in a role like I'm so blessed to be in
- 25:55in this community and you get to get up every day doing what you love
- 25:57and work in the community and do what you can to make it better and
- 26:02for all those people in that community, when something so completely tragic happens in
- 26:06your life that you would never expect ever to happen in your life, Um,
- 26:11when that happens and they all gather around you the way they have,
- 26:12it's just I'm still very overall. I don't think I've processed it fully yet.
- 26:17I mean, it's it's going to take me some time to process everything,
- 26:19obviously, but certainly this um, the and the love for my boys
- 26:22that this community has had and and for me and UM, it's just been
- 26:27I just I can't say thank you enough to everybody. It's just insane.
- 26:30Well you know that, it's the nail on the head. Uh. I
- 26:33always say, our communities like none other. It's a family. You stink
- 26:37together. And people ask why we do what you and I do, and
- 26:38the service heard the public it is because we want to give back and this
- 26:41is in the community. They respond, that's rightful, that's right people.
- 26:45They appreciate it. And I mean, my heart goes out to you and
- 26:48the family know its continue to continue to help and then we can. But
- 26:51this community always seems to rally around each other, whether they know you,
- 26:56where they don't know you or whatever. That's what's the beauty of Charleston and
- 26:57all value. Oh I've gotten, I mean I gotten messages and texts and
- 27:00emails and calls from people that I mean, I may know who they are
- 27:06past them, you know, in a meeting or something, right, but
- 27:07you don't really you know how that goes. You pass them on the meeting,
- 27:11you see him one time, talk to them, and then you may
- 27:12not see him again for a year. And those are the folks that are
- 27:15also reaching out saying anything you need, uh, you know, just give
- 27:18me a call, which is just I mean, it's just so incredible.
- 27:22Well, I appreciate you. I've been on with us this morning. You
- 27:23know, we're all we're all praying for you and your family. Rick.
- 27:26And I know, I know there's a fundraiser for you happeny tomorrow. I
- 27:30love the name. It's Foam a few blocks from the dome. Yeah,
- 27:34it starts starts at three tomorrow afternoon at Short Story Brewery and Charlton. That's
- 27:38on Summer Street, one eighty six Summer Street. Hope everybody, UM,
- 27:42we'll come out for this, um to help you guys out. Yeah.
- 27:47And I can't say enough things to to Aaron and the crew at short Story
- 27:49for putting that together. And I actually because we postpone phone with them.
- 27:52It's supposed to be in a post phone with the dome after party phone raiser,
- 27:56right, and so he changed the name because we postpone phone with the
- 27:59dome. So also I just found out yesterday that Fife Street Brewery is also
- 28:02doing a similar benefit from seven to ten I believe tomorrow night as well.
- 28:07So, I mean, again, just another example of just all these people
- 28:11rallying around my boys and eyes just and this is not something that Rick Cavender
- 28:15said, Hey, do this for me. I mean, you had nothing
- 28:17to do. I mean, actually, so I will say, Tracy White,
- 28:18my fellow board member, I know you. She's probably been l here
- 28:21before. If everyone knows Tracy when she set up that go fund me,
- 28:23she texted me and she said, she literally was like, I'm doing this.
- 28:29You have no control. I know you hate getting help from anyone.
- 28:33I just want you to just sit back and accept it and say thank you.
- 28:37That's all you need to do, which is hard for me because I'm
- 28:40usually on the other side of that at that table, and it's just not
- 28:44in my nature to to to accept things like that. So it has been
- 28:45I will say, it has been a shift in my natural reflex to be
- 28:51able to sit back and just accept these wonderful, all this wonderful love and
- 28:55support and gifts and just say thank you. But I can't say thank you
- 28:59enough and say you can feel good both ways. You canceled the phone with
- 29:02the dome, people get still enjoy their phone, and that's to help and
- 29:04then support them. Yeah, a great person like you and do something good.
- 29:07Yeah, Rick, no testament to you, man. I mean,
- 29:10you do so much for this community and that's the least people can do is
- 29:11help out. And I think they they we welcome the opportunity. So uh,
- 29:15my heart goes out to you again and the kids and everybody. Thank
- 29:18you, Doug. I appreciate that. But I got to ask you this.
- 29:19There were some fireworks at the school board meeting last night. Did you
- 29:23hear the audio from there? You heard it? I'm glad you did.
- 29:27We played it. Oh goody. It was Tracy's annualk Yeah. I mean,
- 29:33and I'm not going to get into the whole thing, but but there
- 29:34was somebody and that's that's certainly they're right. There was somebody at the school
- 29:37board meeting last night that had some disparaging things to say about the every education
- 29:42and they talked about how you guys don't really care about kids, and so
- 29:45on and so forth. And Tracy, who I've known for a number of
- 29:49years, she's not very outspoken issue. I think she's a logan girl.
- 29:57That's not where she lives now, but that's where originally. But but it
- 30:03is difficult being in your gas position. You know that we're people, UM
- 30:07think that I guess that the school boards get rich off this sort of thing
- 30:11if you serve school board. I told you my cousin used to be the
- 30:14president of the school board. And one of my really really good friends and
- 30:17former co worker of North Mike Queen, was with the Harrison Candy Board of
- 30:21Education. Mike told me one time he said everybody should have to serve on
- 30:23the school board at least once. Yeah, like jury duty. Yeah.
- 30:26I mean, well, I think you asked me this when I was a
- 30:29guest host right a few weeks ago, about this whole this concept that I
- 30:33think a lot of people think. And I think the lady who spoke to
- 30:37us last night made this comment that we were using as a stepping stone and
- 30:41you're the worst stepper in history. Right, what a step to take,
- 30:44right? And I think that I think that that sometimes is the perception that
- 30:47we just run for the seats this seat to like advance to something else.
- 30:52But I mean, if you think about it, I mean we're I mean,
- 30:53school board members typically are the ones who are usually being blamed for a
- 30:59lot of stuff, and which is fine that we we accept that we do
- 31:02get blamed for things. Um and and that's how that's how it goes.
- 31:06That's life. But um, I can guarantee you and as Tracy said last
- 31:10night, we get paid one hundred and sixty dollars a meeting, Okay,
- 31:12So I mean that, I mean think about that. We only have two
- 31:15meetings a month, maybe sometimes four meetings a month. So we none of
- 31:18us are doing it for the money. We do it because we're either parents
- 31:22or we were parents, and we our kids graduated already or whatever the case
- 31:25is, and we care about public education and we want to do our best
- 31:29to sit around the table and have and have a seat and have a voice
- 31:32in some of those those decisions. We none of us are there for any
- 31:34kind of like um selfish personal Yeah. So I mean, and you know
- 31:40the folks that keep coming to these meetings, everyone is welcome to come and
- 31:44speak as delegation that is the absolutely can Doug. You're you're very familiar with
- 31:47how that process works. Everyone is welcome to come and do that, and
- 31:49we we welcome it. Um. But I'm just I'm I'm personally, UM,
- 31:55I've heard enough as when it comes to our marginalized communities. I want.
- 31:59I'm not going to go into this whole thing. I'm just gonna say
- 32:00I've heard enough about it, and we as a system accept every single student,
- 32:05no matter who they are, every single employee, no matter who they
- 32:07are, no matter what walk of life they're from, no matter where they
- 32:12come from, no matter their orientation. We don't care. We accept everyone.
- 32:15That's that simple. And I'm just not interested in hearing hearing people being
- 32:19spoken about like they are not human beings anymore so, and I'm happy to
- 32:23publicly say that I don't really at this point. I mean, and I'll
- 32:25be honest. I walked out of the meeting and paste in the parking lot
- 32:30for about I don't know, fifteen minutes yesterday while some of them were speaking.
- 32:35I just I was, I was done so and I made I made
- 32:37my remarks very clear and I stand by them, so you know, And
- 32:39it's one of the things too. As you know, like people, they
- 32:42they don't offer any solutions. Probably they just come they just want to tell
- 32:44you that they're disappointed and they're do want a terrible job and can't believe you
- 32:47did this or said that. But then they don't want to help the system.
- 32:50They just want to make it worse. And especially on social media,
- 32:52it gives people that platform to just kind of say and speak how they wish
- 32:54and hey, listen, they work with me, talk to me. Yeah,
- 32:58we'll have to take this offline. Don't come here and make show out
- 33:00of it. Let's talk offline. Tell me how we can really get to
- 33:01the root of this and fix it. Do you want to fix it or
- 33:05you just want to try to embarrass them? Yeah? What are the solutions?
- 33:07We can talk all day about what you think an issue or a problem
- 33:09is, or something you personally or something based on your your experience or your
- 33:15experience or your religion. That is one hundred percent. You're a business.
- 33:16I'm not here to judge or make any comment on that. That is your
- 33:20business. But um, unless you have a solution that's going to benefit everyone
- 33:23in the system, I just I'm not interested in hearing about it anymore.
- 33:27And I know that sounds harsh, but that is where I am here.
- 33:29It is what it is. Rick. I appreciate you being here, man,
- 33:31our thoughts and prayers with you, with you and your family in this
- 33:34a difficult week. I love you, man, and I love it really
- 33:37means a lot. And I wanted to give you that opportunity. You know,
- 33:40I got you in here, you know, to talk about but I
- 33:44had alterior motives because I know you. I wanted to give you apply intuition
- 33:46I could, Yeah, I'm not very good at that, but I want
- 33:51to. I wanted to give you an opportunity to thank people. That's,
- 33:52of course basically what I want to because I know, I know you have
- 33:54known you for a number of years. I know that's kind of gay you
- 33:57are. And keep up the fight man. Yeah, all right, thank
- 34:00you. Also, Rick, we'll talk Rick Cavitaer from the Cana County Board
- 34:04of Education. Also Charleston Main Streets again. Foam on the Dome schedule for
- 34:07tomorrow has been postponed until July twenty second, So get out there and enjoy

- 37:50Of course, you know you're well known, your entire family heroes in
- 37:52valley. But for those who may be listening that do not know your story,
- 37:55what is the Dug Scaff story. I'm a South Chauston guy, born
- 37:59and raised and they're my family built the stuff from commercial real estate development,
- 38:02went to WVU, got a chance to graduate from South Rowson High School,
- 38:06had a leadership scholarship. WVU got a chance to serve in student government,
- 38:09worked with a lot of great people. A senator Mansion Robert C. Byrd
- 38:13got me in politics a little bit. I ran for student body president,
- 38:15met a guy named Glenn Hiner. He was the CEO of Owens Corning at
- 38:19the time. He recruited me right out of WVU. So after student Body
- 38:22President, I left, went to Owens Corning, became a regional sales manager,
- 38:25traveled the country all fifty states. First chance I had to move back
- 38:29to West Virginia, I came back. I was gone for about four years,
- 38:31lived in Pittsburgh, Ohio. Came back, lived with my parents for
- 38:35a couple of years, got my feet wet here, helped my dad grow
- 38:37his business, and then ran for office in the House of Delegates. This
- 38:40is my eleventh year in the House of Delegates, serving here my first year.
- 38:45My second term here back and also service a Minority leader. And I
- 38:49invested in the Charleston Gazette mail to help, you know, save the newspaper
- 38:52here, keep it local, and partner with Doug Reynolds to form HD Media.
- 38:57We have twelve newspapers all across West Virginia and Virginia. And now I
- 39:00sit in my day to day chair just one block from you as president of
- 39:04this ever changing news industry. And we're gonna talk about that a little bit
- 39:08later on. I'm gonna go back to the political thing for a moment.
- 39:10And you talked about your time as student body president and all these things.
- 39:14Well, what I mean a lot of people serving those roles and then they
- 39:15go on about their life. They don't hang onto that political What was it
- 39:19that made you want to serve? And you know what, I'm glad you
- 39:21said. So many people come and go and I see that list of student
- 39:22body presidents and they hang your name up there, and it's what you It's
- 39:25what you. David Hardessay, he was a president of the university time said,
- 39:28it's what you make of this role while you're in it, not just
- 39:30the title or just doing it and then get out. It's what you make
- 39:34of it and the connections you make. And I took advantage of it.
- 39:36I traveled at all with the university all around the country, meeting the alumni,
- 39:38you know, from Texas to California to South Carolina. I met people
- 39:42like I've met people from all over coast to coast, and that's where I
- 39:45made my connections. And to this day, I met Rod Thorne, I
- 39:47met Jerry West, I met all these people, and I was just a
- 39:50twenty one, twenty two year old student. And then I met Senator Robert
- 39:52C. Bird. We did a joint summit form together about bullying in the
- 39:59classroom of all things, and we did at WVU and I got to host
- 40:00it with Robert C. Bird. He got me interested in furthering my career
- 40:04in politics. I've always had in NACT and it's on politics. It's just
- 40:07helping people and finding a way in a platform to help help people in your
- 40:10community. And so I came back to West Virginia. I didn't want to
- 40:13do it in Ohio or Pennsylvania where I was living and working. I only
- 40:15wanted to come back and help the people that helped me grow as a kid
- 40:20and ruin And you know, and we're gonna talk about media, and I've
- 40:22I've got to kind of watch the things I gonna talk about because we're almost
- 40:25out of time, and I got to get to tend questions a little bit
- 40:28later on. But you know, there's this, I guess, stigma about
- 40:31traditional media, whether it's radio what I do, television, whether it's newspaper
- 40:36that it's that it's dying and start dying. It's just changing. Uh,
- 40:39And when to talking about that a little bit later on. But I want
- 40:42to quickly ask you one more political question that I try to avoid politics on
- 40:45Friday from it? Do you want to the Last Democrat Standing? And I
- 40:50joked with you a couple of weeks ago a text. I said, I
- 40:52want to do a show called Last Democrats Standing. Uh. It's changed quite
- 40:54a bit since you became involved in the world of politics. It keeps changing,
- 40:58you know. I was in there. I was in a supermajority as
- 41:00a Democrat when this all started twelve years ago, and now it's quickly changed.
- 41:05Within ten years. The Republicans have came in, they take over,
- 41:07they took all constitutional offices. As you know, the rest is history.
- 41:09I'm one of eleven Democrats and the House of Delegates serve as a minority leader.
- 41:13And I don't think the people's views are changing. I think they were
- 41:15party affiliations changing. We were always a conservative state, whether you're registered Democrat
- 41:21or a Republican. Most people were just registered Democrat because they always wanted to
- 41:23vote in the election. Remember when the Republicans couldn't even fill the ballot,
- 41:27so you know how it goes. You either you're the registered Democrat or you
- 41:30had nobody to vote for exact. So then people's views they were always pro
- 41:34live, pro gun, pro business, pro call, but they were registered
- 41:37Democrat. So then it started catching up to him. And then there was
- 41:39more and more than the Republicans, and then you had the Trump factor,
- 41:42and then the West Virginia started changing, but their views never changed. The
- 41:45people's views how much of the role to national politics. Master polics played a
- 41:47huge role. I think the people couldn't relate with some of the national candidates,
- 41:51and that's too bad because that was a trickle down effect and a lot
- 41:53of people. You know, I don't have any relationship with any of the
- 41:57national figures out there, but you get associated with them all that Doug scaff
- 42:00vote for Doug Scaff is a vote for Chuck Schumer. Yeah, I mean
- 42:04I don't even know the person. I don't care less like I, oh
- 42:06you know what he does really where he is or well he has fun.
- 42:08But the bottom line is you've got to get to know your people. All
- 42:10politics is still local. I think we can go back to that. In
- 42:14West Virginia. You got to vote for the person, not the party.
- 42:16And I think those Democrats that are out there surviving now, they really have
- 42:20to know their people. People have to know them. They get to be
- 42:22out there, get to know them. So it's not just about the party,
- 42:24it's about the person. Talking about Doug scaff who is our guest host
- 42:28today, we're gonna take a break. I'm gonna spend a little bit more
- 42:30time talking about media and the role of radio, television, newspapers quote unquote
- 42:35traditional media and how the demise of such may have been greatly exaggerated. We'll
- 42:39talk about that when we come back. Plus we'll do ten questions, all

- 45:12best you can. You don't know what the questions are ahead of time.
- 45:15Rapid fire as quickly as possible. I feel like I'm on family feud.
- 45:17Ready all right? Are you ready? I'm ready? All right? My
- 45:22go to sandwich is go to sandwich is all a single Big Dave's Classic at
- 45:30Wendy's. Okay. I can own any car past or present. What would
- 45:34that car be? Oh? I like a jeep wrangler, the old fashioned
- 45:37jeep rangler. Do you put the top down? You get out and get
- 45:39a little muddy. Okay. If you come into Doug Scaff's house and Doug
- 45:44is watching TV, you are most likely watching there's gonna be some form of
- 45:49sports on, you know. With three boys, that's all they care about
- 45:51is either watching Sports Center or replayed game. My favorite grade school teacher was
- 45:55favorite grade school teacher was, oh, miss mister Calhoun. Mister Calhoun,
- 46:02he's a sixth grade teacher. Man. He told you like it is.
- 46:05He taught your life lessons. He wasn't easy on you, but he abanded
- 46:07expectations and he knew what you were getting with him. Sunrise or sunset,
- 46:14Oh, I'm a I'm a sunrise type of guy. I used to love
- 46:15getting up at the beach early and watch that sun come up. No matter
- 46:17what time it was, I'd always want to race up, no matter how
- 46:20tired you are, whatever. Watching that sun come up is the most beautiful
- 46:22thing down there in Myrtle Beach that you could ever see. I will I
- 46:24will be on a beach in two weeks. So what I mean. The
- 46:29sports team that never fails to break my heart is Pittsburgh Pirates. They're just
- 46:34terrible. For the first place, are they sold? The first place?
- 46:36They'll find a way to's like trade everybody, you know they're in first place,
- 46:38they're doing great. Oh wait, we have some trade value now,
- 46:40so they'll trade everybody away before they pay him. I always break my heart
- 46:44all right, here's the newspaper question for the newspaper guy. And I don't
- 46:46know if this applies for reading online or not, but when reading the paper,
- 46:51I always read blank first. Phil Kabler, Oh, I used to
- 46:58always read it. He always talks. It's entertaining, you know, I
- 47:01know people always read it. I read this his opinion, and then I
- 47:06turned to the sports section, because you know I'm a big sports game.
- 47:07Okay, all right, you can get three toppings on your pizza. What
- 47:10are the three toppings? Three toppings? I'm a veggie guy on pizza because
- 47:15sometimes, you know, the meat gets a little too greasy for me.
- 47:16So when I order HUSS's Pizza guys, I always order your mushroom, green
- 47:20peppers and onions. Okay, what's the most beautiful place in West Virginia?
- 47:23Oh? The most beautiful place is I'm a big fan of Cooper's Rock.
- 47:28When I was up in Morgantown that spent a lot of time up there and
- 47:30just looking out. You know, at that point, there's so many beautiful
- 47:32places. It's hard to choose Cooper's Rock. Hawk's nest name it. If
- 47:36someone opens up the console to your vehicle, they're likely to find Oh my
- 47:40god, my whole life anyway, from mouth washed, toothpaste, to deodorant,
- 47:45to check book to cash. You do have a home, don't you.
- 47:50I do have a home. Yeah. I keep a suitcase in the
- 47:52back because you're always changing in my role. You're always changing from a polo
- 47:54shirt to a shirt and tie, sport codor shorts or you name it.
- 47:58All right, final one, complete the sentence. No day is complete to
- 48:00me until I No day is complete until I hug my three boys. Good
- 48:07way to end it, Tech, says Doug. Thank you for keeping our
- 48:09newspapers alive envibrant. Yeah, you know, I'm a big fan of the
- 48:14newspapers. I'm still an old school guy. I love to touch and film
- 48:15and that print and just smell the paper there it is right there. There's
- 48:19just something about the sound of my newspapers. Ja looking at the way out
- 48:22of the page. He came in and he said, I brought you a
- 48:23paper, but you already have one. I'm that guy. It's just a
- 48:28part of my daily routine, all right. I want to ask you this
- 48:30about media, and we're running short on time here, and you know,
- 48:31and I mentioned quote unquote conventional media. You know, radio, television,
- 48:36newspaper people say, oh, they're all dying, and they're not dying at
- 48:39all. And I can't speak for your medium, and I speak for radio.
- 48:43Radio listenership is through the roof right now. But the form, the
- 48:46way that people are I mean most the majority of people that are listening to
- 48:50this show right now are not listening on a quote unquote traditional radio. They're
- 48:53listening on their phone or their iPad or their device or some kind. We
- 48:57have almost as many people that listen to the podcast asked of the show that
- 49:00listen to it live. They listen two to three to four attacks from a
- 49:04friend of mine just now ask me about when they could go back and listen
- 49:07to a show from a couple of days ago while I'm on the air.
- 49:09So it's there. It's just changing down the way people access. People want
- 49:14news, they want local news, they want to key informed. It's we
- 49:16are a multimedia company that also still prints of paper. You're a multimedia company
- 49:22that has radio stations. It's the way people consume the news is what's changing.
- 49:25And you, as a paper, as a radio station or whatnot,
- 49:29have to adapt and give people that alternatives, multiple options, multiple ways to
- 49:34listen, to view, and to read. And that's what we're doing.
- 49:37We're even doing so much more with the QR codes. Who put QR codes
- 49:39with all the stories because people want to see it. They want to see
- 49:43a video, two to three minute video with almost all of our stories.
- 49:45We didn't have that. We didn't have that six months ago. We're hiring
- 49:47multimedia specialists. That's what they're called now. They're not called reporters anymore.
- 49:52Multimedia specialists out of the College School of Journalists are called Television's what they're called.
- 49:55They're called multidis specials. Who can write, who they can produce,
- 50:00they can film, and they can edit. That's what we're hiring. And
- 50:02our newspaper is alive, and well, hey, we're growing. We just
- 50:05bought two newspapers down in Virginia. They're weeklies that come out once a week.
- 50:07People still want to be informed. We are growing, we are expanding.
- 50:10We're hiring more reporters than we've ever had. We have one of the
- 50:14biggest staff that we've ever had now at the newspaper industry. Those positions,
- 50:17though, are just changing. And some of the roles and dudes from like
- 50:21you said, from podcast, if you can't catch this show live because everyone's
- 50:23busy. Go back and listen to it, right, and that's the way
- 50:27it is right now, all right, I didn't think we have a phone
- 50:29call, so let's try to grab well. I can give this this person
- 50:30maybe thirty seconds, so go ahead. You're on a Doug scaff Hey.
- 50:35This is Jim. Hey, Jim. I don't know if you remember me,
- 50:37Doug, but I was a teacher whenever mister Parsons was there. Okay,
- 50:44what'd you teach? Jim? Reading and computers? Okay? And you
- 50:51talking about South Chauser Junior High? Right, yes, right, you were
- 50:54there. I think you were ninth grade when I was there. I wasn't
- 50:58there very long, and it was whenever there was a teacher's strike. Okay,
- 51:02all right, Jim, do you have a question, because we got
- 51:04a roll, Do you have a question. Yeah. The media is the
- 51:08most important process in this country, I think because the free press was the
- 51:15only thing that was mentioned in the constitution? Am I not right? Yeah?
- 51:17You are correct, I stand by it. Local free press is more
- 51:22important than ever to keep our people informed. Nationally can get it from so
- 51:24many different outlets, but radio stations like this and Dave Allen show in our
- 51:28newspaper. Keep people locally in the community connected. I totally agree with you,
- 51:31all right, Jimmy. We appreciate your phone call. Thanks a lot.
- 51:34So we had about thirty seconds left on the show. Why is it
- 51:37so important, real quick, big question. Why is it so important for
- 51:40you to keep those local newspapers going to local one, not Charleston, but
- 51:44the local one. I think keep people informed. You can turn on your
- 51:45TV. You can hear about all the national stuff. What's going on in
- 51:46your community, what's the new business that's coming to town, what's your church
- 51:50doing, what's your family? A little old Johnny or Jimmy, you know
- 51:52that had a home run at the game last night. You want to know
- 51:54about your friends and family that you grew up with and in the community.
- 51:58That's why it's so important. That's why I moved back to West Virginia.
- 52:00This is my home. This is my town, this Pete, West Virginians
- 52:02are family to me. It's not sure town, it's my town. But
- 52:05okay, it's Dayowenstown. Here we are, it's the day Owens alright.
- 52:08I appreciate you being here, man. Thanks, It's a lot of fun.
