Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get from one full episode
- 0:37Speaker 1: of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig into
- 0:40Speaker 1: the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to confront
- 0:42Speaker 1: the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're discussing the wild arrests, setups, and true crimes that
- 0:49Speaker 1: happened during holiday season's past for music history. In the
- 0:52Speaker 1: exclusive portion, we dive into the way in which Diddy
- 0:55Speaker 1: allegedly avoided serving hard time for one of those holiday
- 0:59Speaker 1: true crimes. We share with you something pretty awesome that
- 1:02Speaker 1: happened to us here in disgrace Land this past week,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and we get into your emails, comments, dms, and as
- 1:07Speaker 1: always a whole lot of rosie. This is the podcast
- 1:10Speaker 1: for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who
- 1:13Speaker 1: know that the best history is a history that gets
- 1:15Speaker 1: buried disgrace Lands, where I tell the stories they didn't
- 1:18Speaker 1: want told, the kind you'll end up telling someone else.
- 1:20Speaker 1: All Right, disc goes, Let's get into it. Merry Christmas,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Happy Honeka. I hope everyone's having a great holiday season,
- 1:33Speaker 1: however you celebrate, all right, listen, I'm late and putting
- 1:36Speaker 1: my Christmas list together this year. But it's a different
- 1:38Speaker 1: kind of list. It's not a list of what I
- 1:41Speaker 1: want for Christmas. It's not a list of my favorite
- 1:44Speaker 1: Christmas songs. It's not a list of my favorite unintentional
- 1:47Speaker 1: Christmas songs, though more on that later. It's a list,
- 1:51Speaker 1: a ranked list of true crimes from music history that
- 1:55Speaker 1: happened during the holidays. Now, you'd be surprised how many
- 1:59Speaker 1: of the stories that we cover here in Disgraceslam that
- 2:02Speaker 1: happened around the holiday season. It's way more than I thought.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Pretty shocking, actually. But I have a theory. You've heard
- 2:09Speaker 1: the phrase the devil finds work for idle hands to
- 2:12Speaker 1: do well. I prefer one that is slightly similar but
- 2:15Speaker 1: means the same thing. Idle hands are the devil's workshop.
- 2:20Speaker 1: One could also say that music history is the devil's workshop,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and the workshop gets real busy around the holidays, with
- 2:28Speaker 1: all those rock stars sitting around at home without the
- 2:30Speaker 1: structure of the road board to death by domesticity, just
- 2:34Speaker 1: itching to get themselves into trouble. The holidays are the
- 2:36Speaker 1: perfect time for rockstar true crime, as the record shows.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So here's a list, ranked, of course, of some of
- 2:45Speaker 1: the more outrageous crimes committed in music history. Not all outrageous,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm just interesting right around the holiday season. Okay, So many,
- 2:54Speaker 1: of course have been covered, like I said in detail
- 2:56Speaker 1: here in DISGRACELANMD, but most without calling out the relative
- 3:00Speaker 1: holiday spirit until now. Number ten comes from an artist
- 3:05Speaker 1: that we've yet to cover but definitely will at some point.
- 3:09Speaker 1: DMX now December fifteenth, two thousand and two, during a
- 3:12Speaker 1: run of his career where running into authorities for all
- 3:17Speaker 1: kinds of stuff, everything spanning weapons charges to animal cruelty,
- 3:21Speaker 1: DMX was arrested a couple weeks before Christmas for burying
- 3:26Speaker 1: his five four to eleven size seven in girls into
- 3:30Speaker 1: the gas pedal and burning one hundred and four miles
- 3:33Speaker 1: and an hour down the highway. I don't know that
- 3:36Speaker 1: I've ever gone I've never pushed it that fast. I
- 3:39Speaker 1: pushed it pretty fast sometimes, but I don't think I've
- 3:41Speaker 1: ever been just under one oh five. I hope not. Anyways. Anyhow,
- 3:45Speaker 1: speeding was the least of DMX's problems that Christmas. He
- 3:49Speaker 1: was also arrested for driving an unregistered vehicle without a
- 3:53Speaker 1: license on top of everything else DMX was up to.
- 3:57Speaker 1: He was sentenced to seventy days in jail event for
- 4:00Speaker 1: that incident. And there's a whole bunch of other stuff
- 4:03Speaker 1: the DMX got in trouble for the DMX story. To me,
- 4:06Speaker 1: it's a very sad story, and I don't yet know
- 4:10Speaker 1: how to tell it, but I know that we will
- 4:13Speaker 1: at some point here in disgrace, and I got to
- 4:14Speaker 1: find a different way of telling it than that doc
- 4:16Speaker 1: that came out a couple of years ago. That's what's
- 4:18Speaker 1: been holding me out anyhow. Number nine, Joan Bias, you
- 4:22Speaker 1: can't accuse Bob Dylan's girlfriend of being idle during the
- 4:25Speaker 1: holidays back in nineteen sixty seven, because on December nineteenth,
- 4:29Speaker 1: Joan Bias, I kid about the Bob Dylan girlfriend thing.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I'm not a huge I don't like Joe Bias. There,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I said it, but I don't. I don't mean to
- 4:36Speaker 1: just you know, discredit her as being Bob Dylan's girlfriend.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I understand how important she is in music history, and
- 4:43Speaker 1: I actually think that Joe Bias, for whatever reason, doesn't
- 4:47Speaker 1: get enough. I don't want to say credit. I guess credit.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I feel like we don't we don't understand fully how
- 4:54Speaker 1: big Joan Biaz was because Bob Dylan is caught up
- 4:59Speaker 1: in her story and she ends up in his shadow,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and he's massive. But she was an enormous star before
- 5:07Speaker 1: Dylan came along, and was after Dylan's split as well.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But for whatever reason, you know, maybe it's like I said,
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Dylan shadow thing. Whatever the reason is, it's we
- 5:17Speaker 1: don't think of it that way anymore. I don't know why.
- 5:20Speaker 1: We just kind of forget about it, you know, we
- 5:22Speaker 1: just kind of, Oh, that's John Bias anyhow. Joe Bias
- 5:24Speaker 1: nineteen sixty seven, also John Bias. This guess is absolutely stunning, beautiful,
- 5:31Speaker 1: And even though I don't like Joan Bias's music, her voice,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you can't you can't argue with how, I guess compelling
- 5:41Speaker 1: an artist she was, and she captivated not just the
- 5:45Speaker 1: American public, but she captivated men like John Lennon, for example,
- 5:50Speaker 1: Johnny Cash, all kinds of guys who were just blown
- 5:53Speaker 1: away by John Bias. Anyhow, nineteen sixty seven, like I said,
- 5:59Speaker 1: she was not resting during the holiday season, she was
- 6:02Speaker 1: arrested for leading an anti war, anti Vietnam War sit
- 6:07Speaker 1: in in Oakland, California, at an Army induction center. Joan
- 6:10Speaker 1: was putting in work during that holiday off time, unlike
- 6:15Speaker 1: Number eight Chuck Berry, who was fucking around in the
- 6:18Speaker 1: worst possible way, or one of the worst possible ways.
- 6:20Speaker 1: A couple of days before Christmas in nineteen fifty nine,
- 6:23Speaker 1: when Chuck was arrested in Saint Louis, Missouri for transporting
- 6:27Speaker 1: a fourteen year old girl across state lines for immoral purposes,
- 6:31Speaker 1: a crime known as the Man Act. Chuck Berry was
- 6:36Speaker 1: sentenced to five years hard time in federal prison. Chuck
- 6:40Speaker 1: appealed that sentence, and Santa smiled upon the Rock and
- 6:43Speaker 1: Roll pioneer and reduced his sentence to just three years.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Chuck ended up serving just twenty months. You know, I've
- 6:48Speaker 1: done a lot of work on Chuck Berry. We did
- 6:51Speaker 1: that chuck Berry episode, but there's also an expanded version
- 6:54Speaker 1: of that story in my book, and I don't think
- 6:57Speaker 1: the Christmas of it all ever really came into the story. Apologies,
- 7:02Speaker 1: if you can hear my the faint, the faint yelp
- 7:07Speaker 1: and shout of my kids. They're out in the front
- 7:09Speaker 1: yard here playing baseball, and you know what, it's Christmas break.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I can't, I can't, can't squash their spirit, all right?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Moving on from Chuck Berry at number eight, number seven.
- 7:18Speaker 1: In early December nineteen seventy three, as The Who were
- 7:23Speaker 1: wrapping up their tour in time to return home for
- 7:26Speaker 1: the holidays, they celebrated the performance of a particularly explosive
- 7:32Speaker 1: show in Montreal by destroying in epic fashion. They're suite
- 7:38Speaker 1: at the Hotel Bonaventure. Now, before allays said and done,
- 7:45Speaker 1: this is Look, this has been documented elsewhere, but it's
- 7:47Speaker 1: still shocking to me. And I didn't really get into
- 7:50Speaker 1: it in the Who Who episodes that we've that we've produced,
- 7:53Speaker 1: because it's just it's just such a part of rock
- 7:55Speaker 1: and roll lore. But let's fuck it, let's do it
- 7:58Speaker 1: before all was said and done. Okay, after this after
- 8:03Speaker 1: show party, this after party, after the Who show in Montreal,
- 8:08Speaker 1: they're back at the Hotel ponn Adventure and they decide
- 8:10Speaker 1: they're so excited. They're so pumped, they're so blitz on
- 8:13Speaker 1: whatever they're taking that they're going to destroy the hotel suite,
- 8:16Speaker 1: which you know, back in nineteen seventy three wasn't as
- 8:20Speaker 1: wrote as it is now for rock stars. But anyhow,
- 8:24Speaker 1: after all of a sudden, don sofas had been rocketed
- 8:26Speaker 1: out of the hotel suites windows, a television set ended
- 8:29Speaker 1: up in the pool, Pete Townsend's blood somehow was splattered
- 8:33Speaker 1: across the art on the hotel suite's walls, and Pete,
- 8:36Speaker 1: Keith Moon, and John Entwhistle were all hauled into jail
- 8:40Speaker 1: by the local police and in the end let go
- 8:43Speaker 1: and just ordered to pay damages. And with all that activity,
- 8:46Speaker 1: that who still made it to their gig in Boston
- 8:48Speaker 1: in time the next night before eventually breaking for the holidays.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So a little bit of epic rock star debauchery there
- 8:56Speaker 1: from the holidays. I'd heard that story before, I did
- 8:59Speaker 1: not know it took place during the holiday season number six,
- 9:02Speaker 1: just after celebrating the New Year's holiday in two thousand
- 9:05Speaker 1: and eight, Lil Wayne Lowayne, you might remember back from
- 9:08Speaker 1: season six, season seven of Disgray Sand, was arrested in
- 9:13Speaker 1: Arizona after his tour bus was raided. He was given
- 9:15Speaker 1: probation for that charge, probation to be completed once his
- 9:20Speaker 1: stay in prison was finished. I know it's all very confusing.
- 9:24Speaker 1: You can hear about it all in Our Little Wayne
- 9:25Speaker 1: episode number five. We just talked about this one. Trey,
- 9:28Speaker 1: anastagio of the Fish as the kids call them, was
- 9:31Speaker 1: arrested just before Christmas in two thousand and six while
- 9:34Speaker 1: whipping down the road, blitzed on prescription meds and charged
- 9:38Speaker 1: with heroin possession, an event that no doubt made for
- 9:40Speaker 1: a tense Christmas around the Fish camp that year. Trey
- 9:44Speaker 1: eventually pleaded guilty in avoided prison time, and got clean,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and continues to perform with the Fish and without the heroin.
- 9:51Speaker 1: So there you go. That's number five, Number four on
- 9:53Speaker 1: New Year's Eve. This is my favorite one on because
- 9:56Speaker 1: it's so fucked up. On New Year's Eve, nineteen forty eight, Holiday,
- 10:00Speaker 1: who I Love Okay, one of my favorite singers and
- 10:03Speaker 1: just I don't care. One of the greatest vocalists of
- 10:05Speaker 1: all time, Billy Holiday was caught up in a club
- 10:10Speaker 1: melee a brawl and charged with assault with the deadly
- 10:13Speaker 1: weapon on three counts. This is on New Year's Eve
- 10:16Speaker 1: nineteen forty eight. Now, on the day of her hearing,
- 10:20Speaker 1: she heads up to San Francisco to perform for a
- 10:24Speaker 1: sold out crowd at a club which the name is
- 10:26Speaker 1: escaping Me. While staying, however, in the San Francisco hotel,
- 10:31Speaker 1: Mark Twain, I can't forget that name. Billy was then,
- 10:35Speaker 1: so this is New Year's Day. Billy was then the
- 10:37Speaker 1: target of a just despicably shameful FBI raid and I
- 10:44Speaker 1: believe set up by her manager, which is a whole
- 10:46Speaker 1: other story. Billy was charged with opium possession and her
- 10:50Speaker 1: career speeds to an end quickly after this, and her
- 10:53Speaker 1: demise is just horrifically sad. But in a weird twist,
- 11:00Speaker 1: that notorious publicity for the arrest and the brawl a
- 11:06Speaker 1: fueled ticket sales for the rest of her tour. So
- 11:08Speaker 1: she got a little you know, New Year's Holiday bonus
- 11:11Speaker 1: for Billie Holiday there, who no doubt likely needed it
- 11:14Speaker 1: given all that was going on at the time in
- 11:16Speaker 1: her life. Number three in December nineteen ninety nine at
- 11:19Speaker 1: the club Kitcat in New York. You know this one.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Beyonce's husband jay Z back before he was Beyonce's husband
- 11:25Speaker 1: was busted for stabbing Lance on Rivera. Remarkably, somehow, jay
- 11:30Speaker 1: Z only got probation for stabbing a dude. Santa doesn't
- 11:35Speaker 1: fucking a round with no dirt on jay Z's shoulder,
- 11:38Speaker 1: is what I'm saying now. Number two not to be
- 11:40Speaker 1: outdone by his rival jay Z. A couple weeks later,
- 11:44Speaker 1: Sean Puff Daddy Combs was busted two days after Christmas
- 11:47Speaker 1: following a shooting in a different New York City club.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Puffy as he was known then, was charged with criminal
- 11:55Speaker 1: possession of a weapon and stolen property, but eventually eat
- 12:00Speaker 1: the charge. Now a lot of theories about how Sean
- 12:03Speaker 1: Combs avoided a guilty charge here and he avoided going
- 12:09Speaker 1: to prison. Lots of lots of smoke out there. Some
- 12:13Speaker 1: of it is more than smoke, I think. Anyways, we're
- 12:15Speaker 1: gonna get into these theories in the exclusive section of
- 12:17Speaker 1: the after Party for All Access members coming up in
- 12:20Speaker 1: a bit. But first number one on our list, Number
- 12:23Speaker 1: one country singer Merle Haggard, whose voice rivals Billy Holidays
- 12:28Speaker 1: in my estimation, I actually think, and this is because
- 12:31Speaker 1: I've been listening to a ton of Merle Haggard lately,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I think Merle Haggard has surpassed George Jones in my
- 12:38Speaker 1: opinion as far as country singers go, just you know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: subjectively my fave. I'm not saying that Merle Haggard is
- 12:47Speaker 1: the greatest country singing you know. Whatever. You might have
- 12:49Speaker 1: your if you might think it's George, you might think
- 12:50Speaker 1: it's Willie, Johnny whoever. But for me it was George
- 12:54Speaker 1: Jones for most of my life. But there's just something
- 12:57Speaker 1: about Merle that has has got me hooked lately. The richness,
- 13:02Speaker 1: the depth of that voice. I envy it, I really do,
- 13:06Speaker 1: and I just can't get enough of it. Anyways, Merle
- 13:09Speaker 1: was busted on Christmas Day for knocking over a restaurant
- 13:13Speaker 1: the night before in an armed robbery, and this was
- 13:16Speaker 1: an event that led Merle to do hard time at
- 13:19Speaker 1: San Quentin and eventually to getting serious about his musical
- 13:23Speaker 1: career after he saw Johnny Cash perform live at San Quentin,
- 13:26Speaker 1: and ultimately this all led to Merle Haggard writing one
- 13:31Speaker 1: of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, if we
- 13:34Speaker 1: make it through December, a song I'm proud to say
- 13:39Speaker 1: that my seven year old now loves. We've been listening
- 13:43Speaker 1: to It's actually there's a Merl Christmas album. We've been
- 13:46Speaker 1: listening to the whole album a lot lately, and that
- 13:48Speaker 1: might have something to do with why Merle Haggard is
- 13:51Speaker 1: number one on my list here. And the numbering doesn't matter.
- 13:53Speaker 1: The ranking doesn't matter. These are all fascinating stories that
- 13:56Speaker 1: you can tell this Christmas while you're hanging out with
- 13:59Speaker 1: your fans. You know, it gets to the later part
- 14:01Speaker 1: of the day. Football is, you know, not as interesting
- 14:04Speaker 1: as it was earlier. You know, you're all kind of
- 14:07Speaker 1: you get to get a little turkey hangover, maybe you
- 14:09Speaker 1: get a little a little too much bourbon in you,
- 14:11Speaker 1: whatever it is, and you need something alive and up
- 14:13Speaker 1: the party. You can go to any one of these
- 14:14Speaker 1: stories and there will be relevance, of course because of
- 14:17Speaker 1: the holidays, and you know, you'll, you know, you might
- 14:20Speaker 1: be a little entertaining yourself telling these stories of you know,
- 14:24Speaker 1: massively transgressive entertainers. This list could easily have been a
- 14:28Speaker 1: top twenty, maybe even a top fifty. I don't know.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I didn't mention holiday season arrests for a ton of
- 14:34Speaker 1: disgraceland artists, Jas Brown, Jim Morrison, Sam Cook, gig Allen.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm sure with more research into the Disgraceland archive, I
- 14:43Speaker 1: could have pulled out a ton more the holidays in
- 14:47Speaker 1: music history the Devil's workshop as demonstrated by Disgraceland. When
- 14:52Speaker 1: we get back, I'm going to play something that's sure
- 14:54Speaker 1: to blow your mind. And then we're also going to
- 14:56Speaker 1: get into your calls, voicemails, an texts. All right, we
- 15:20Speaker 1: are back, and before we get into your voicemails, text
- 15:23Speaker 1: and more, I wanted to mention that one of my
- 15:27Speaker 1: favorite disgrace Land stories is available for you guys right
- 15:30Speaker 1: now in the feed, and that is the Christmas story
- 15:33Speaker 1: on the death of one of Elvis Presley's favorite singers,
- 15:36Speaker 1: Memphis own Johnny Ace. And if you're looking for something
- 15:40Speaker 1: to do, this is you know, you know, get round
- 15:44Speaker 1: the tree here on Christmas, fire up the old disgrace
- 15:47Speaker 1: Land feed and get into the Christmas fives. This is
- 15:50Speaker 1: a dark but fascinating story and it's absolutely a holiday story.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Johnny Ace in the myth of Johnny Ace and his
- 16:00Speaker 1: death on Christmas Day was most definitely an influence on
- 16:04Speaker 1: an artist that I think most of us know and love.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Lou Reid from the Velvet Underground now Lou just like
- 16:10Speaker 1: those who spread the false myth of Johnny Ace's death
- 16:14Speaker 1: after the Johnny Ace Christmas tragedy, lou Reid himself was
- 16:18Speaker 1: about as unreliable a narrator as is possible to find
- 16:24Speaker 1: in rock and roll history. So because of that, we
- 16:27Speaker 1: thought it was a good time of year to bring
- 16:29Speaker 1: Lou back into the feed with our unreliable take on
- 16:32Speaker 1: the Lou Reed origin story. These two lou Read episodes
- 16:36Speaker 1: are I'm just gonna say it, they're fucking weird. Man.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I was reading a bunch of Raymond Chandler books at
- 16:43Speaker 1: the time, because Lou Reid was heavily influenced by Raymond Chandler,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and I had just had my head buried in that
- 16:51Speaker 1: massive book of Lou Reed lyrics, and I was obviously
- 16:55Speaker 1: reading and watching a ton of Lou Reed interviews where
- 16:59Speaker 1: Lou is basically just lying through all of them about himself.
- 17:05Speaker 1: So what you hear in these two episodes is a
- 17:08Speaker 1: result of me taking all of that in and kind
- 17:10Speaker 1: of channeling Lou as an unreliable narrator into this storytelling.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And you know, it's weird, but it's fun. And they're
- 17:20Speaker 1: produced in an excellent way. If I just I'm very
- 17:23Speaker 1: proud of the job that the Double Elvis team did
- 17:27Speaker 1: with these stories. So those are going to be available
- 17:29Speaker 1: in the archive coming up right right after this, right yeah.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Next week, we of course keep the holiday vibes alive
- 17:40Speaker 1: with our episode on Derek and the Dominoes, those Dominoes
- 17:42Speaker 1: being Dwayne Allmon and Eric Clapton and one Jim Gordon,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and we tell this story of violent schizophrenia in conjunction
- 17:50Speaker 1: with the story of the Lost and Family Murders, which
- 17:53Speaker 1: happened on Christmas Day back in nineteen twenty nine and
- 17:56Speaker 1: was immortalized in song in the Great Murder Ballad The
- 18:00Speaker 1: Loss and Family Murder by the Carolina Buddies and later
- 18:03Speaker 1: popularized by Doc Watson. If you're from the American South,
- 18:07Speaker 1: if you're a true crime fan, if you're from North
- 18:10Speaker 1: or South Carolina, if you love Clapton, the Almonds, or
- 18:14Speaker 1: are a drummer and want to hear about one of
- 18:16Speaker 1: the greatest drummers of all time and his slip into madness,
- 18:21Speaker 1: then you are going to want to listen to this episode.
- 18:24Speaker 1: If you are any of those things, and even if
- 18:25Speaker 1: you're not all right, let's hear from you guys, because
- 18:29Speaker 1: you know it's been about a week and you know
- 18:31Speaker 1: we haven't checked in. Charlie checked in from the nine
- 18:34Speaker 1: to one to two.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yo, Jake, this is Charlie calling it from Georgia. All right.
- 18:40Speaker 2: So here's the thing.
- 18:42Speaker 3: I think it goes out saying that you and your
- 18:44Speaker 3: team and everyone that listens to the show knows what
- 18:47Speaker 3: an awesome podcast that Disgraceland is. But I wanted to
- 18:50Speaker 3: take this opportunity to take you two reasons why specifically
- 18:54Speaker 3: love the show personally.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Number one, it's not about race, or politics or religion
- 19:00Speaker 3: of all the other horspreneur that we use to tear
- 19:02Speaker 3: each other apart day after day. No, it's a show
- 19:05Speaker 3: that has a great host, all right, that tells great
- 19:07Speaker 3: stories about great.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Artists that make the great music that we all know
- 19:11Speaker 2: and love. And at the end of the day, that's
- 19:13Speaker 2: what unifies us. Okay. Number two is.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I know I'm not alone when I say this, but
- 19:18Speaker 3: I think the best part about the show are the introductions, Okay,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and listening to you go and why what I play
- 19:25Speaker 3: you that.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Specific slice of such and such cheese? Could I afford?
- 19:28Speaker 1: It?
- 19:29Speaker 2: Just cracks me up every single time.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Man.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I love it, and I wish you guys the best
- 19:33Speaker 3: of the luck and I who success you could possibly handle.
- 19:36Speaker 3: And again, thank you so much for a great show.
- 19:38Speaker 2: All right, man, Peace, Charlie.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I appreciate the message. Thank you man, thanks for spreading
- 19:43Speaker 1: a little holiday, little Christmas cheer. I hope you and
- 19:46Speaker 1: your family are doing all right. Peace and love and
- 19:50Speaker 1: much more cheese coming my man. That's all I get
- 19:52Speaker 1: to say, specific slices of cheese. All right, Matt, let's
- 19:56Speaker 1: go to the seven three one.
- 20:00Speaker 4: That was the end of the seventry one. Just following
- 20:03Speaker 4: up on the video podcast of you and Zets talking
- 20:06Speaker 4: about the Christmas songs. The band was politically incorrect disdaining
- 20:10Speaker 4: your voice for Baby It's Code Outside, But right after
- 20:14Speaker 4: that you kind of understood the whole earth of kid
- 20:17Speaker 4: sultry performance. The thing with Baby It's Code Outside is
- 20:20Speaker 4: the same thing in the performances sometimes, like on television,
- 20:24Speaker 4: different things. The man would block the door kind of
- 20:27Speaker 4: keep it from going out, and I think that's what
- 20:30Speaker 4: led to some of the backlash, more so than just
- 20:33Speaker 4: the lyrics of the song. I'm not saying one hundred
- 20:35Speaker 4: percent agree with it. But I also could see the
- 20:37Speaker 4: point in the me through movement this song coming out
- 20:39Speaker 4: of Christmas kind of a bad timing situation, not that
- 20:42Speaker 4: it was a new song, but playing them again, and
- 20:45Speaker 4: a lot of it was the performance. The man blocking
- 20:47Speaker 4: the door not allowing her to leave. It did give
- 20:50Speaker 4: a little cringe factor not gonna lie and those very
- 20:53Speaker 4: depending on who performed it. So I think that might
- 20:55Speaker 4: play into it just as well as earth a Kid
- 20:58Speaker 4: be Infective's girl can hit it, you know what I'm saying.
- 21:01Speaker 4: So anyway, just following up on that definitely, so like, uh,
- 21:05Speaker 4: there's a little a little of that in there and
- 21:08Speaker 4: not be why pease enjoy your holidays?
- 21:11Speaker 1: Ah seven three one great great call. I didn't realize this.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I did not understand that. Uh, And I totally see it.
- 21:21Speaker 1: You know, there were TV performances of this song baby
- 21:23Speaker 1: It's Cold outside back in the day, and I can
- 21:26Speaker 1: I can, as you're describing it, I can see them
- 21:28Speaker 1: hamming it up and kind of acting it out and dramatizing,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and with that visual, I can see the thing being
- 21:34Speaker 1: a little more I can see the problem with it
- 21:37Speaker 1: a little bit more clearly. However, anyway you cut it,
- 21:41Speaker 1: baby it's cold outside, politically correct, politically incorrect, however you
- 21:45Speaker 1: view it. It's a fantastic song. Appreciate this little bit
- 21:48Speaker 1: of information here though, seven three one, Thank you all
- 21:51Speaker 1: right over on the text machine four one six, I
- 21:55Speaker 1: love this text four to one six right saying, Hey,
- 21:57Speaker 1: how about Christmas albums that don't exist but should, like
- 22:00Speaker 1: the Smiths, Maybe songs such as Christmas Is Over or
- 22:04Speaker 1: The Last Star I shall see. How about Santa will
- 22:07Speaker 1: not Arrive? Happy Christmas? It may be my last away
- 22:11Speaker 1: in a manger and it is cold there. This guy's
- 22:15Speaker 1: got a whole track listing for a fake Smith's Christmas album.
- 22:19Speaker 1: This is fantastic. It goes on the present I cannot
- 22:22Speaker 1: give the present I cannot give. That's a RC song
- 22:27Speaker 1: man Christmas, Christmas for Caligula, this Charming Elf, and last
- 22:36Speaker 1: but not least, Shoplifters of the world unite on Boxing Day,
- 22:40Speaker 1: Merry Christmas, Happy Honukah, and rock a rolla four one
- 22:43Speaker 1: six You text in any time you want. That was amazing.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Appreciate you. We had this whole thing going last week. Guys.
- 22:51Speaker 1: We made a mix and an unintentional Christmas mix that's
- 22:53Speaker 1: available for you to hear on Spotify if you're following
- 22:56Speaker 1: a Disgrace sampot or if you're in on the chat.
- 23:00Speaker 1: If you're in with us, this goes in Patreon. I
- 23:02Speaker 1: posted the link up there. You can find the link
- 23:04Speaker 1: to the mix the playlist very very easily. Get another
- 23:07Speaker 1: one here. Another suggestion for untraditional Christmas songs. This one,
- 23:13Speaker 1: the five Awight says an interesting Christmas song or a
- 23:16Speaker 1: version of a Christmas song. I believe it was the
- 23:19Speaker 1: band Weezer, Oh Holy Night, and it was in a
- 23:21Speaker 1: sitcom show called Raising Hope. That's when I first heard it,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and I was like, oh shit, love that five Await
- 23:28Speaker 1: Thank You two four eight writes in on the same
- 23:31Speaker 1: topic the Last Days of December. It's an obscure, neo
- 23:35Speaker 1: synthpop song from an obscure band on an even more
- 23:38Speaker 1: obscure Christmas compilation. It's one of the prettiest songs I've
- 23:41Speaker 1: ever heard, and one of the best things about December
- 23:44Speaker 1: is that I get to go play it again and again.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Here's too many more Decembers. Two four eight. Love That
- 23:50Speaker 1: Ish wants an episode on Paris Hilton, Sorry on Lionel
- 23:55Speaker 1: Richie and we work our way in through the gateway
- 23:58Speaker 1: of Nicole Richie in Paris, Hilton Ish. I like this idea.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I think there's a lot that I think. Lana Richie
- 24:07Speaker 1: has an autobiography as of as of recently recent as
- 24:10Speaker 1: of recently as of lately recently published. Yeah, yah yay,
- 24:14Speaker 1: I need more coffee that I'm just interested in reading
- 24:17Speaker 1: as a as a fan and learning more. I bet
- 24:19Speaker 1: he's got a great perspective. The guy's been around forever.
- 24:22Speaker 1: So ish you know, you might get your wish ish okay,
- 24:26Speaker 1: Christmas wish for ish. Unintentional holiday songs, now, this is
- 24:31Speaker 1: different from non traditional Christmas or holiday songs. Unintentional I
- 24:37Speaker 1: forget who was on Patreon brought up in the Ghetto
- 24:40Speaker 1: as being an unintentional Christmas song by Elvis Presley and
- 24:44Speaker 1: I can hear it. So we had a little convo
- 24:47Speaker 1: going on Patreon about that, and some folks chimed in.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Joni Mitchell's River has Christmas imagery, but I don't think
- 24:52Speaker 1: it classifies as a Christmas song. But I think it
- 24:54Speaker 1: should or no, she says, I think it could go
- 24:56Speaker 1: either way. That's christy kay. I don't know that song, KRISTI,
- 24:59Speaker 1: but I'm gonna check out. Michael Murphy writes in Apollo
- 25:02Speaker 1: one hundred Joy, a disco fied version of Jayhu Joy
- 25:06Speaker 1: of man's desiring? Is that drive like Jay Hum? Michael
- 25:12Speaker 1: has a bunch here human sexual response from Boston, Land
- 25:16Speaker 1: of the Glass Pine Cones. Wow, never heard that Ben
- 25:20Speaker 1: Folds five Brick as a Christmas song. Michael could have
- 25:24Speaker 1: started and stopped his list with this next recommendation here
- 25:29Speaker 1: for an unintentional Christmas song, and it just perfectly embodies
- 25:33Speaker 1: this concept. It is a long December by counting crows.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I mean, come on, love this tune. Haven't talked about
- 25:42Speaker 1: it at all this holiday season could have It's just smashing,
- 25:47Speaker 1: absolutely fabulous. Great TV show by the way, absolutely fabulous. Okay,
- 25:53Speaker 1: maybe next year we'll do more on this topic. I
- 25:55Speaker 1: really like it because it's hard. You know, my brain
- 25:58Speaker 1: just doesn't go to like ten exam this. You got
- 26:00Speaker 1: to think about it for a minute. Unintentional Christmas song
- 26:03Speaker 1: songs that weren't intended to be Christmas, but somehow I've
- 26:06Speaker 1: ended up representing the holiday season for us. Anyways, I
- 26:10Speaker 1: love this idea, and perhaps we'll do more of it
- 26:12Speaker 1: next year. Over on Instagram, let's see here Sam Dullivan
- 26:19Speaker 1: commented which membership tier is This film should be played
- 26:24Speaker 1: loud available to This will definitely persuade me to sign
- 26:27Speaker 1: up for Patreon, even if it's only for you guys, Well,

- 27:04Speaker 1: fellow discos twice a year to get on a zoom

- 27:15Speaker 1: slash Disgrace and actually just go to disgraceandpod dot com.

- 27:22Speaker 1: Hope to see it in the chat over in Patreon dude,
- 27:25Speaker 1: with all the other with all the other discos. Now
- 27:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break, and when I come back,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I got to lay this this thing on you, guys,
- 27:33Speaker 1: this thing that happened this past week that was pretty awesome.
- 27:37Speaker 1: You might have heard of it, you might not have.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Either way, we're going to get into it back in
- 27:40Speaker 1: the flash, all right, guys. So the other night, I'm
- 27:59Speaker 1: up in my eleven year old's bedroom. It's just after dinner,
- 28:03Speaker 1: and I'm using his stereo, his double cassette recorder to
- 28:06Speaker 1: try and dub these cassettes of this holiday mix that
- 28:13Speaker 1: I had made for a bunch of my friends. And
- 28:17Speaker 1: it's a Christmas mix, all stuff from mine and my
- 28:19Speaker 1: wife's Christmas vinyl collection. And anyhow I'm putting the mix together.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I'm fighting with this crappy little stereo because my my
- 28:30Speaker 1: double cassette recorder had broken previously wasn't working, So now
- 28:35Speaker 1: I'm using his, and he has a really shitty stereo.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It's not his fault. I bought it for him, and
- 28:40Speaker 1: I'm trying to get the thing to work. I'm super frustrated,
- 28:43Speaker 1: you know, trying to do this thing. It's supposed to
- 28:45Speaker 1: be easy it's suposed to be fun like it was
- 28:47Speaker 1: when I was a kid. It's not fun. It's paying
- 28:49Speaker 1: the ass. It's a pain in the ass to make mixtapes,
- 28:51Speaker 1: it really is. I'm so spoiled. We're also spoiled by
- 28:54Speaker 1: the by the ease with which we can put together
- 28:56Speaker 1: digital playlists. I'm in here, you know. Here's the thing
- 28:59Speaker 1: about making a making a cassette tape, you know, dubbing cassettes.
- 29:03Speaker 1: How the hell did we write the track listings on
- 29:06Speaker 1: those tapes? How did we fit the song and the
- 29:11Speaker 1: artist in one in fifty percent of the size of
- 29:16Speaker 1: the cassette tape? Insert It's impossible, absolutely impossible. So I'm
- 29:22Speaker 1: super frustrated trying to do this. My wife yells up,
- 29:25Speaker 1: She's like, hey, my aunt Anne just just texted me
- 29:29Speaker 1: and she told me that Disgraceland was just on Jeopardy.
- 29:33Speaker 1: And I'm going, that's not true. She's she's She's wrong.
- 29:38Speaker 1: At least it wasn't, you know, the podcast Disgraceland. Maybe
- 29:41Speaker 1: they just said the word or something. That's what I
- 29:44Speaker 1: was thinking. And I go back to being frustrated, and
- 29:50Speaker 1: about five minutes later, I get a text from Abvi'spivick,
- 29:54Speaker 1: who Aviy does all the great illustrations for disgrace Land
- 29:59Speaker 1: and has since we launched the show. And Abby lives
- 30:02Speaker 1: in somewhere in New York City. And I get this
- 30:07Speaker 1: text from Avi. He's like, pretty cool man, Disgraceland on Jeopardy.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I'm like what Now, I'm like, you're you're kidding? What?
- 30:15Speaker 1: Because now I'm thinking, I'm thinking two things. I'm thinking
- 30:18Speaker 1: it's real and wow, this is really freaking cool. Like
- 30:21Speaker 1: I loved, I love Jeopardy. I don't watch it every night,
- 30:24Speaker 1: but I've watched it a lot throughout my life and it's,
- 30:27Speaker 1: you know, obviously a huge part of the fabric of
- 30:29Speaker 1: our culture. So of course I'm like, this is amazing.
- 30:32Speaker 1: But then I'm also just thinking, like, wait a minute,
- 30:35Speaker 1: don't don't Shouldn't they have given me a heads up
- 30:38Speaker 1: if this was real, I'd know it was gonna happen,
- 30:41Speaker 1: And of course I had no heads up, So that
- 30:43Speaker 1: I text Matt and Zeth, who you guys know obviously,
- 30:47Speaker 1: and I know I just something without even asking. I'm
- 30:49Speaker 1: assuming that Matt Bowden is like the biggest Jeopardy fan
- 30:52Speaker 1: on the planet, and uh, I'm thinking if anybody watches
- 30:57Speaker 1: this every night, it's him, and yeah, he's super fan.
- 31:01Speaker 1: But these guys aren't watching TV. They're doing whatever. Neither
- 31:04Speaker 1: of them know what's up, and I think they're both
- 31:06Speaker 1: kind of like. As I'm texting them, my thought thinking
- 31:09Speaker 1: is like, dude, you're out of your freaking mind. Then
- 31:12Speaker 1: my sister, my little sister, who's like hours from going
- 31:15Speaker 1: into labor, texts me and she's like, we're watching it,
- 31:19Speaker 1: and they saw it. They actually like had the clip
- 31:23Speaker 1: and they sent it. And turns out it aired up
- 31:26Speaker 1: in the Northeast an hour before it aired where I'm at,
- 31:30Speaker 1: so I was able to actually watch it, tape it
- 31:34Speaker 1: and with my two sons, who didn't know what the
- 31:37Speaker 1: hell was going on but thought it was pretty cool,
- 31:39Speaker 1: as did my wife. And I don't know why, you know,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I don't know why I think this is such a
- 31:43Speaker 1: special thing. I've been the show has been mentioned on
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, other stuff that's as big, arguably, I guess
- 31:51Speaker 1: or I don't know, part of the culture, but this
- 31:52Speaker 1: is something about Jeopardy. It's been around forever since I
- 31:55Speaker 1: was a little kid, and it's just, like I said,
- 31:58Speaker 1: such a fabric of our culture. It really made me
- 32:01Speaker 1: happy that our show Disgraceland was mentioned. And we're going
- 32:05Speaker 1: to play the clip for you guys right now so
- 32:07Speaker 1: you can you can hear this. It was quick, of course, Matt,
- 32:11Speaker 1: go ahead and play this for the Peeps podcast before
- 32:15Speaker 1: ahead here as it focuses on music and misdeeds. Disgraceland
- 32:20Speaker 1: discussed the May through July twenty twenty five trial.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Of this rap modal.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Chris who is did yes? John Colmes, all right, guys,
- 32:28Speaker 1: that's Disgraceland as part of the question in Jeopardy and
- 32:33Speaker 1: the answer was, of course Sean Combs, who we will
- 32:36Speaker 1: be talking about in the exclusive section of this after party.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Going to be doing that with Zeth as I as
- 32:43Speaker 1: I typically do, typically do the exclusive sections of the
- 32:46Speaker 1: after party with Zeth, And like I mentioned before, guys,
- 32:49Speaker 1: if you signed up to become a Patreon member, you're
- 32:51Speaker 1: going to get access to that exclusive content plus other
- 32:54Speaker 1: bonus content, including the mini episodes that are released pretty
- 32:57Speaker 1: much every week, and also our new video podcasts. This
- 32:59Speaker 1: film should be played loud. You also get ad free
- 33:02Speaker 1: listening of all Disgraceland and hollywood Land episodes, So go
- 33:06Speaker 1: to disgrace landpod dot com. To sign up to become
- 33:08Speaker 1: a Patreon member. Got a lot going on in hollywood Land.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I mentioned Zeth and the show that he helms hollywood Land.
- 33:14Speaker 1: We did these special features for the holiday season. We
- 33:17Speaker 1: did two of them on Christmas films. I did one,
- 33:21Speaker 1: Matt did one, and we got one coming up on
- 33:24Speaker 1: New Year's Films, which I think are going to be into.
- 33:27Speaker 1: These are fun discussions. I get to indulge my fandom
- 33:32Speaker 1: of film history, and Zeth, of course, is the real
- 33:35Speaker 1: expert here. Matt give the people a little taste of
- 33:40Speaker 1: I don't know. I just pick one of the special
- 33:41Speaker 1: features here from the holidays, and guys, if you aren't
- 33:44Speaker 1: subscribed to hollywood Land, get over to that feed and
- 33:46Speaker 1: subscribe now.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Okay. So a couple of movies here that I think
- 33:51Speaker 5: are connected by the fact that they both have very
- 33:54Speaker 5: pivotal scenes that play out during New Year's Eve parties
- 33:58Speaker 5: are Boogie Nights and Godfather Part two. Boogie Knights has
- 34:03Speaker 5: this New Year's E party that takes us from the
- 34:06Speaker 5: decade of the seventies into the eighties, from film to video.
- 34:09Speaker 5: It's the beginning of the end. There's a good Fellow's
- 34:11Speaker 5: camp for this. You know, the moment where there's no
- 34:14Speaker 5: turning back with the story. You've been seduced by the lifestyle,
- 34:17Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden, you know, William H.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Macy puts a gun to his head and blows his
- 34:21Speaker 5: brains out, and the now you're paying for that lifestyle, right.
- 34:25Speaker 5: And then The Godfather too, of course, has this iconic
- 34:28Speaker 5: New Year's Eve party scene in Cuba, which is the
- 34:31Speaker 5: moment where Michael tells Fredo he knows that he was
- 34:33Speaker 5: the one that betrayed him. What do you want to
- 34:34Speaker 5: talk about first, boog Knights.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Well, I want to talk about both of them. I
- 34:37Speaker 1: want to make this point that one of them seems
- 34:39Speaker 1: like a New Year's movie and the other one does not.
- 34:41Speaker 1: And I feel like it goes to what I was
- 34:43Speaker 1: saying earlier where Boogie Nights it does. I don't know,
- 34:47Speaker 1: it just feels like they make they reinforced the New
- 34:49Speaker 1: Year's piece of it more than in Godfather. Godfather, It's
- 34:53Speaker 1: just part of this massive you use the word set
- 34:56Speaker 1: piece earlier, and certainly the party for Batista, that's all
- 35:00Speaker 1: you know. It's yeah, it's New Year's and feels it's
- 35:03Speaker 1: just everything kind of seems the drama is paying off
- 35:07Speaker 1: so fully in that scene, everything between Michael and Fredo
- 35:12Speaker 1: and Michael's plan is coming to fruition or starting to
- 35:16Speaker 1: the mechanics anyways of it, and the drama almost seems
- 35:20Speaker 1: like it's too big for the New Year's scenery piece
- 35:25Speaker 1: of it. So maybe that's why I never really think
- 35:27Speaker 1: of that movie as a New Year's movie. Great movie obviously,
- 35:31Speaker 1: Whereas with Boogie Knights, they're set in this New Year's
- 35:34Speaker 1: Eve party and the drama that unfolds there is more
- 35:39Speaker 1: of a surprise, perhaps more of a shocking turn that
- 35:43Speaker 1: you're not expecting. You can kind of and Godfather too,
- 35:45Speaker 1: you can kind of see what Michael's working up to.
- 35:49Speaker 1: He kind of knows this is gonna happen. He doesn't
- 35:51Speaker 1: set Fredo up, but he's kind of fishing to get
- 35:54Speaker 1: the information from Fredo because he already suspects him. Somewhat
- 35:57Speaker 1: does the audience kind of being brought along even if
- 35:59Speaker 1: you don't realize it. The Little Bill thing in Boogie Nights,
- 36:02Speaker 1: the first time I watched it was a total shock.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Absolutely, It was up until that point like you were laughing,
- 36:08Speaker 5: and you've been laughing at Little Bill every time he
- 36:10Speaker 5: turns around. His wife's like going to town with some guy,
- 36:13Speaker 5: and there's a whole group of people watching and it's
- 36:17Speaker 5: and he's sort of like the butt of the joke.
- 36:19Speaker 1: All Right, guys, that's the Hollywood Lamb podcast available for
- 36:23Speaker 1: you right now in the Hollywood Land Feed on whichever
- 36:26Speaker 1: podcast app you use. Go subscribe now if you're not already.
