- 0:11Speaker 1: The broadcast in voice of the Texas Long Bots, Craig Way,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I hope your Monday's going all right.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It is, after all, Monday, but it's a Monday of
- 0:24Speaker 2: a holiday weeks. Maybe they're in as much of a
- 0:26Speaker 2: grind on you.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I hope not.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Anyway, school is out right now for a lot, including
- 0:30Speaker 2: on campus at ut which is why some things were
- 0:34Speaker 2: shifted with the football program. No practice in the morning
- 0:40Speaker 2: because the guys didn't have afternoon classes. So practice this
- 0:45Speaker 2: afternoon so those guys could sleep in a little more,
- 0:49Speaker 2: the bodies rest up and restore a little bit, and
- 0:52Speaker 2: they moved the press conference up with coach Sartin. Sark
- 0:56Speaker 2: spoke to the media at eleven o'clock this morning, Steve
- 0:58Speaker 2: eleven thirty, which you heard live here on the Zone,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and among those comments was the fact of the noise level,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and we know how noise he did. If you've ever
- 1:14Speaker 2: been to a game at Kyle Field, you know how.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Noisy he is.
- 1:17Speaker 2: The over one hundred thousand people are. It's very steep,
- 1:19Speaker 2: it's very loud, it's very noisy, and there's all us
- 1:22Speaker 2: talk about Expert speakers have been brought in to increase
- 1:27Speaker 2: the decibel. Level and the noise level and all that
- 1:29Speaker 2: kind of stuff and sarcus as had he heard about
- 1:33Speaker 2: that and how does he feel about all that?
- 1:35Speaker 3: First is the speakers have to be turned off when
- 1:37Speaker 3: we're getting ready for play, So make sure the officials
- 1:40Speaker 3: know that. The second, the second key to that is,
- 1:45Speaker 3: you know, I think it's a mentality that we work on.
- 1:50Speaker 1: All of the time.
- 1:51Speaker 3: We don't wait for games like this to say, hey,
- 1:54Speaker 3: we got to have great poison composure. We really try
- 1:56Speaker 3: to work on that throughout the summer, throughout training camp,
- 1:59Speaker 3: as the season goes on, so that when games like
- 2:02Speaker 3: this come we can we can play a really poised
- 2:05Speaker 3: and composed game. Or even last Saturday when when everybody
- 2:12Speaker 3: you could almost feel a level of frustration with everybody
- 2:15Speaker 3: in the stands and ourselves included on the sidelines of
- 2:18Speaker 3: we had three out of four plays we put the
- 2:19Speaker 3: ball on the ground that we were able to regroup, resettles,
- 2:23Speaker 3: keep our composure, and stay together as a team to
- 2:25Speaker 3: go do those things. And so again, I don't think
- 2:28Speaker 3: this is like a one shot thing where we're talking
- 2:30Speaker 3: about poison composure when it's a big game. I think
- 2:33Speaker 3: there's a level of consistency and our approach to that
- 2:36Speaker 3: that allows us to feel comfortable talking about poison composure
- 2:40Speaker 3: when you're going into a game like this.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Ex what's a question. I think it was a friend
- 2:44Speaker 2: Terry Middleton Orange illustrated as Sark. He said, when I
- 2:46Speaker 2: visited with Quinn, I asked him about things, and he
- 2:49Speaker 2: said that his key is just to get the ball
- 2:52Speaker 2: in the hands of the playmakers. And he asked about
- 2:55Speaker 2: that being and that is something if you talk to Quinn,
- 2:58Speaker 2: if you talk too if you talk to Trey Weisner,
- 3:04Speaker 2: if you talk to just about any of the guys,
- 3:05Speaker 2: they talk about the totality of the team concept. And
- 3:11Speaker 2: Sark was asked about that player focused mentality.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Well, it really is, you know, and that's on that's
- 3:17Speaker 3: in all three phases, you know, Terry, like, we don't
- 3:20Speaker 3: talk about individuals like that, you know, we don't. We
- 3:23Speaker 3: don't go into games thinking, man, we got to get
- 3:26Speaker 3: this guy three sacks, or we got to get this
- 3:28Speaker 3: guy ten catches, or we got to get this guy
- 3:30Speaker 3: to throw five touchdowns. It's about let's do what we
- 3:34Speaker 3: need to do as a team to go win the game.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And there's a team first mentality we use an adage.
- 3:40Speaker 3: We not me around here. It's about us, and you
- 3:43Speaker 3: guys hear me say it all the time, being enamored
- 3:45Speaker 3: with us.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And what comes out of that.
- 3:48Speaker 3: The byproduct of team's success is individual accolades, awards, honors,
- 3:54Speaker 3: and achievements. And there's probably not a national award right
- 3:58Speaker 3: now that that's going out that we don't have somebody
- 4:01Speaker 3: nominated for as a semi finalist or a finalist for.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I'm sure when the.
- 4:05Speaker 3: All American teams come out we'll have players that make those.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I'm sure when the NFL Draft rolls around here in
- 4:10Speaker 3: a few months, we'll have a ton of players get
- 4:13Speaker 3: drafted in that. But all that stuff is a byproduct
- 4:16Speaker 3: of the team's success. And I think it was really
- 4:19Speaker 3: well said by Quinn. You know, it was about how
- 4:22Speaker 3: do I get the ball to those guys so that
- 4:23Speaker 3: they can go do what they need to do, rather
- 4:26Speaker 3: than how do I throw X number of touchdowns or
- 4:28Speaker 3: whatever completion percentage? And I think if you really asked
- 4:32Speaker 3: any of our guys that question, you'd probably get a
- 4:34Speaker 3: similar response predicated on the position that they play.
- 4:36Speaker 1: No question about that.
- 4:37Speaker 2: And then he was asked about how much reinforcement goes
- 4:41Speaker 2: into this being a different kind of week, and it's
- 4:44Speaker 2: only ninety five miles wherever you are, depending in the
- 4:46Speaker 2: Greater Austin area, it could be anywhere from ninety to
- 4:50Speaker 2: about one hundred and ten to go over to the
- 4:52Speaker 2: Brasses Valley. But we're talking an hour forty five minute
- 4:54Speaker 2: drive something like that. And he was asked about how
- 4:58Speaker 2: does he gear his guys into the difference mentally speaking
- 5:02Speaker 2: of what they're encountering.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I just think that the best thing that we get
- 5:06Speaker 3: to do is sleep in a little bit. You know,
- 5:10Speaker 3: being a Division one football player, Power five, Power four
- 5:13Speaker 3: football player is a grind, you know. You think about
- 5:16Speaker 3: these guys do every single day. We look at them
- 5:19Speaker 3: just on the field, right as like an NFL player.
- 5:22Speaker 3: These guys go to class every day. These guys are
- 5:25Speaker 3: going to study Hall, right, They're doing other things in
- 5:28Speaker 3: their lives that consume time and energy as well. And
- 5:32Speaker 3: so I'm really just trying to recharge their batteries a
- 5:34Speaker 3: little bit, give them a little bit more time to sleep,
- 5:37Speaker 3: understanding that the game this week is at six point
- 5:40Speaker 3: thirty in the evening as well, and so a little
- 5:42Speaker 3: bit of their biological clocket and that in the right frame,
- 5:46Speaker 3: and so we're just trying to take advantage of the time.
- 5:48Speaker 1: But I do think it is helpful.
- 5:51Speaker 3: It's interesting that you know, our guys are coming in
- 5:54Speaker 3: now for treatment and different things before we get ready
- 5:56Speaker 3: to go this afternoon, and they all look bright eyed,
- 5:59Speaker 3: they all upbeat. Even our staff looks up beat because
- 6:02Speaker 3: everybody's just getting a little bit more sleep, which I
- 6:04Speaker 3: think is helpful.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Now you want to stump Sark, ask him which player
- 6:09Speaker 2: has made the most improvement this season.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'll start ground floor and work my way up.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Like Kobe Black had his best game on Special Teams
- 6:21Speaker 3: this past week.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And I know that probably doesn't seem.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Like much because you gouty to see him play corner
- 6:25Speaker 3: and different things, but he was one of our Special
- 6:27Speaker 3: Teams players of the week. And so when you can
- 6:29Speaker 3: watch the development of a young player grow into that,
- 6:33Speaker 3: I think has been tremendous. I think Jelanie McDonald has
- 6:37Speaker 3: really grown into playing safety and where he's at now
- 6:41Speaker 3: and it's easy to point to that interception, but he's
- 6:43Speaker 3: he's a great tackler man. He's really good in the
- 6:45Speaker 3: open field. That's been a great improve I think Jermaine Lola. Continue,
- 6:49Speaker 3: here's an older player that came in a little nicked
- 6:52Speaker 3: up with his knee but continues to play better and
- 6:55Speaker 3: better and better. Had a great stop for us there
- 6:57Speaker 3: on fourth down this past weekend.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Jeez, that's a that's a that was a loaded question. Uh.
- 7:08Speaker 3: But those are some, you know, just throwing some guys
- 7:11Speaker 3: out that I think have really shown the ones that
- 7:12Speaker 3: are just popping into my head, you know.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Off first thought, Yeah, there's a lot. There's also a
- 7:18Speaker 2: lot of guys who were on this roster. The fact
- 7:21Speaker 2: that it's about a fourth of the roster and a
- 7:23Speaker 2: lot of the starting positions manned by guys from the
- 7:27Speaker 2: Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Sark was asked, what was that
- 7:34Speaker 2: a specific effort when he first got in there to
- 7:37Speaker 2: establish DFW as recruiting hotbed, because you look at it
- 7:41Speaker 2: right now, like, for example, in the offense, Jake Majors
- 7:45Speaker 2: the centers from Prosperous in Collin County north of Dallas.
- 7:48Speaker 2: D J. Campbell, the starting right guard is from Arlington
- 7:51Speaker 2: Bowie Cam Williams. The right tackle was from Duncanville. Jan Davis,
- 7:55Speaker 2: one of the tight ends that rotates him Gunner Hilm
- 7:58Speaker 2: is from Everman, Trey Wisner is from Desota, Quinn Ewers
- 8:04Speaker 2: is from South Lake Carrol. So there's several guys from
- 8:09Speaker 2: the Dallas Fort Worth air alone. Bert Auburn is from
- 8:12Speaker 2: flower Man. That's on the on the offensive side, and
- 8:18Speaker 2: then on the defensive side. They got plenty of guys
- 8:21Speaker 2: from the Metroplex as well. Malik Muhammad is from South O'cliff.
- 8:24Speaker 2: That's in that You're gonna hear Sark talk about this,
- 8:27Speaker 2: this southwest Dallas County corridor that features Duncanville, De Soto,
- 8:34Speaker 2: South Oakcliff. There's other good programs there too, Lancaster, Cedar Hill,
- 8:38Speaker 2: There's other programs that are good there. Uh, then you
- 8:41Speaker 2: got Anthony Hills from Denton. Ryan, you have Warren Roberson
- 8:46Speaker 2: is from Red Oak. You have there's somebody else on
- 8:52Speaker 2: the I was trying to think of a thought on
- 8:54Speaker 2: the defensive front. Well though, Jordan Johnson Rebella is from
- 8:57Speaker 2: Fort Worth, but he played it. I amg Academy, you
- 8:59Speaker 2: know the which there's lots of guys. Alex January's from Duncanville.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Colin Simmons is from Duncanville. So there's lots of guys
- 9:05Speaker 2: from the Dallas forward area. Was there a concerted effort
- 9:08Speaker 2: to make the FW recruiting hot bid for this university.
- 9:12Speaker 3: When we came on board, we just kind of assessed
- 9:17Speaker 3: the rosters of kind of our rivals, and we assessed
- 9:21Speaker 3: the rosters of some of the better SEC teams and
- 9:25Speaker 3: where were they getting their players from. And then we
- 9:27Speaker 3: assessed the roster here and we really felt like we
- 9:31Speaker 3: were we didn't have enough of the marquee players coming
- 9:35Speaker 3: out of the Dallas region. And oddly enough, at that
- 9:39Speaker 3: time when we came on board, we made a huge
- 9:44Speaker 3: emphasis to go do that. But at that time too,
- 9:47Speaker 3: the South Dallas area in particular really had this big
- 9:51Speaker 3: uptick in play, and it just happened to coincide almost simultaneously,
- 9:58Speaker 3: as those programs really star had to grow and go,
- 10:02Speaker 3: we came in and that was like our focus. And
- 10:04Speaker 3: we've been able to get some really good players out
- 10:07Speaker 3: of that region, not just South Dallas but the Dallas
- 10:10Speaker 3: region in general. And but all that being said, we
- 10:15Speaker 3: can't just rely solely on that, right. We have to
- 10:18Speaker 3: spread our wings and we have to do a great
- 10:20Speaker 3: job in Houston, We have to do well in East Texas.
- 10:23Speaker 3: We have to do well in Central Texas. We have
- 10:26Speaker 3: to do well in our surrounding states where we can
- 10:28Speaker 3: where we have a reach into Louisiana, where we can
- 10:31Speaker 3: start to reach now into more of the southern states
- 10:33Speaker 3: with being in the Southeastern Conference, we have to continue
- 10:37Speaker 3: to reach some into California because that's kind of been
- 10:39Speaker 3: my home and so I know a lot.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Of people there.
- 10:41Speaker 3: And so as much as Dallas had been a focal
- 10:44Speaker 3: point for us, I think it's important that, Yes, but
- 10:47Speaker 3: we still have to spread our wings and get into
- 10:49Speaker 3: the other areas.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And one more comment from Stark this hour, and it's
- 10:52Speaker 2: about again it goes back to that unselfish play. Roger
- 10:56Speaker 2: Wallace had asked a question about the I'm for this
- 10:59Speaker 2: guy and for that guy, and the DB's all saying,
- 11:01Speaker 2: you know, Jade for Thorpe. They were even said it
- 11:04Speaker 2: on the post game interview with Hey, Jade for Thorpe,
- 11:07Speaker 2: Jade for Thorpe, for the Thorpe Award. And he was
- 11:11Speaker 2: asking about that all for one and one for all things,
- 11:13Speaker 2: but they're all really promoting that, and he was asked,
- 11:16Speaker 2: what does that mean where you've got several guys promoting
- 11:19Speaker 2: one specific guy for the award.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, No, I think it's really neat. Man. I love
- 11:23Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 11:23Speaker 3: It's like I see Michael Taff wearing a Jade for
- 11:27Speaker 3: Thorpe T shirt, Macouba talking about ja Day and then
- 11:31Speaker 3: Jah Day's wearing a Quinn Yours T shirt, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 3: and I think that just speaks to the team we have,
- 11:36Speaker 3: the culture, we have, the love these guys have for
- 11:38Speaker 3: one another.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You know.
- 11:42Speaker 3: You look at the six sacks, five different guys getting sacks,
- 11:45Speaker 3: and I look at the celebrations with Colin and Baron
- 11:47Speaker 3: Currell or Trey and Alfred Collins and all these different
- 11:50Speaker 3: guys like they're just playing for one another, and then
- 11:53Speaker 3: they love one another and then they want to promote
- 11:55Speaker 3: one another, and like I said, in the end, the
- 11:58Speaker 3: individual accolades come because these guys are playing really well
- 12:01Speaker 3: as a team.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Right now. Yeah, good stuff too.
- 12:03Speaker 2: All right, we'll hear more from Start coming up next hour,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and some more NFL stuff up next on Sports Radio
- 12:09Speaker 2: AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
