- 0:10Speaker 1: the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah
- 0:13Speaker 1: and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away. 2 Kings 23-24
- 0:22Speaker 1: My Lord, I want to take time to thank you
- 0:25Speaker 1: for guiding me and protecting me in my youth. so
- 0:29Speaker 1: that I could get to the place where I am now.
- 0:33Speaker 1: As I rest and meditate on your goodness in times past,

- 1:59Speaker 3: In our last story, Josiah became king over Judah. He
- 2:05Speaker 3: was only eight years old when he took office. However,
- 2:08Speaker 3: he clung to the wisdom of God and became beloved
- 2:11Speaker 3: as the righteous king of Jerusalem. He restored the temple
- 2:15Speaker 3: and repented on behalf of the people. In this story,
- 2:19Speaker 3: we see Josiah bringing Judah out of the depths of
- 2:22Speaker 3: darkness and slavery to sin. He goes throughout the city
- 2:26Speaker 3: and wilderness to rid Judah of all its shrines to
- 2:30Speaker 3: past gods, inspired by the book of 2 Kings.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Hello, Pastor Jack Graham here with today's episode of the
- 2:39Speaker 2: Bible in a Year. We're always glad to open God's
- 2:43Speaker 2: Word together. In our previous episode, we were introduced to
- 2:47Speaker 2: King Josiah. He began to rule Judah at a very
- 2:50Speaker 2: early age, but his constant search for wisdom and godly
- 2:53Speaker 2: instruction led him to rule with honor, faith, and integrity.
- 2:58Speaker 2: He tore down the altars of the false gods and
- 3:01Speaker 2: restored the temple, and during the restoration, the scroll of
- 3:04Speaker 2: the law of Moses was discovered— God' s Word. When faced with
- 3:09Speaker 2: the reality of Judah and Israel's unfaithfulness, Josiah sought a
- 3:13Speaker 2: prophet of God for insight on how to make things right.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And even though the prophecy he received foretold judgment and captivity,
- 3:21Speaker 2: Josiah committed himself and his people to live in obedience
- 3:25Speaker 2: before God. Today, we'll hear about all the reforms that
- 3:30Speaker 2: Josiah enacted in Judah, cleansing the land and God's people,
- 3:35Speaker 2: cleansing them from sin and idolatry that had kept them
- 3:38Speaker 2: in slavery. So once again, let's listen to the Word
- 3:42Speaker 2: of God.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Midday was beginning to turn into dusk. The sun was
- 3:48Speaker 3: grazing the top of the holy temple. The gold adorned
- 3:51Speaker 3: on the pillars spread the light into a hundred different directions.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Josiah climbed the smooth steps into the house of the Lord.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Behind him were all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. All people,
- 4:03Speaker 3: young and old, followed their king as their ancestors followed
- 4:07Speaker 3: Moses to the tent of meeting. There Josiah knelt before
- 4:11Speaker 3: the Lord. He beat his chest and lamented the sins
- 4:14Speaker 3: of his forefathers. The people watched their king weep over sin.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It was a new feeling for them. They had spent
- 4:21Speaker 3: several decades with kings hell-bent on destroying all forms of holiness.
- 4:26Speaker 3: To see a king bow before God was an odd sight.
- 4:30Speaker 3: They wondered if this is what David looked like all
- 4:33Speaker 3: those years ago. Josiah read before them the law of
- 4:37Speaker 3: Moses and exhorted them on the love and justice of God.
- 4:41Speaker 3: The sea of faces were somber and contemplative as they
- 4:45Speaker 3: listened to their king. When Josiah finished, he closed the
- 4:49Speaker 3: scroll and sighed. He raised his hands high into the
- 4:52Speaker 3: air in front of his people and cried out to
- 4:55Speaker 3: the Lord on their behalf. King Josiah made a covenant
- 4:59Speaker 3: with God that he and the rest of his people
- 5:02Speaker 3: would seek him alone for their worship. that they would
- 5:05Speaker 3: hold fast to him and his statues with their whole
- 5:08Speaker 3: hearts and souls. Josiah fell to his knees and prayed
- 5:12Speaker 3: to God. His hands still lifted in praise. A hush
- 5:16Speaker 3: fell over the vast crowd. Then, one by one, they
- 5:20Speaker 3: all began to bow as well. For the first time
- 5:23Speaker 3: in nearly 400 years, God's people bowed to him in
- 5:26Speaker 3: reverence and worship. After a while, the people returned to
- 5:30Speaker 3: their homes. The torches were snuffed out and the city...
- 5:34Speaker 3: became silent. Yet Josiah remained. The echoes of his slow
- 5:39Speaker 3: breaths filled the empty sanctuary. Josiah remembered how close the
- 5:44Speaker 3: Lord had been to him as a child. Josiah would
- 5:47Speaker 3: not have been able to survive being king as a
- 5:49Speaker 3: boy if it weren't for the comfort of love and God.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Josiah rose to his feet and called for a few
- 5:56Speaker 3: of his men to be gathered. Although it was late,
- 5:59Speaker 3: there was still much work to be done before Judah
- 6:02Speaker 3: was truly free. Josiah stood outside the temple with his
- 6:06Speaker 3: most trusted men in front of him. The sun had
- 6:09Speaker 3: set completely, and they all stood with torches lit in
- 6:12Speaker 3: a circle. Josiah looked to the high priest Hilkiah and
- 6:17Speaker 3: ordered him to take his servants back into the temple.
- 6:21Speaker 3: There were still some old idols and shrines in Baal
- 6:24Speaker 3: and Asherah dwelling there. He wanted them removed and burned
- 6:28Speaker 3: outside the city. He looked to some of the city
- 6:31Speaker 3: guards and ordered them to scour the city for the
- 6:34Speaker 3: priests of Baal. Once they were all found, they were
- 6:37Speaker 3: deported out of the city. Lastly, he had his generals
- 6:41Speaker 3: break down the homes of the male cult prostitutes who
- 6:44Speaker 3: lured men and women into the temple to fornicate on
- 6:47Speaker 3: the altar of Asherah. Once all of the men departed,
- 6:50Speaker 3: Josiah took a few of his guards to the hills.
- 6:54Speaker 3: That is where his grandfather and other worshippers would kill
- 6:57Speaker 3: and burn their children. The woods were silent. The trees
- 7:02Speaker 3: swayed slightly to the breeze as Josiah and his men walked.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Josiah looked around. He could see fire pits and altars
- 7:09Speaker 3: in different parts of the woods. Charred infant bones were
- 7:13Speaker 3: illuminated in the moonlight. Josiah remembered his father coming here often.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He had lost brothers and sisters to these wretched rituals.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Looming over the charred ground were large twenty-foot wood altars
- 7:26Speaker 3: to Molech. A righteous anger filled Josiah as he peered.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Up at it.
- 7:31Speaker 3: How many innocent lives were given for this false god?
- 7:35Speaker 3: How many children burned in these forests, all for the
- 7:38Speaker 3: vain pleasure of wicked men? Josiah could hardly stand it.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Some of the altars were much older than others. It
- 7:46Speaker 3: was Solomon himself who first erected altars in the high places.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Josiah gestured to his men, and they tore down the pillars.
- 7:55Speaker 3: They crushed them and burned them. Then they went into
- 7:58Speaker 3: the small shrines and filled them with dead men's bones
- 8:01Speaker 3: to defile it. Josiah wanted to make sure that no
- 8:04Speaker 3: man or woman would come to this place for worship again.
- 8:08Speaker 3: So he could not simply destroy these shrines. He had
- 8:11Speaker 3: to make the ground itself unclean. Josiah descended down from
- 8:16Speaker 3: the high place back into the city. There he lay
- 8:19Speaker 3: in his bed, praying for the Lord to spare him
- 8:21Speaker 3: and his people. Dawn's light was covered from the lingering
- 8:25Speaker 3: smoke of burning Asherah poles and ceremonial brothels. Yet Jerusalem
- 8:30Speaker 3: seemed cleaner than it had ever been before. Priests were
- 8:34Speaker 3: making sacrifices in the temples, and people were freely entering
- 8:37Speaker 3: into the temple's gates to worship. Men who had made
- 8:41Speaker 3: a living corrupting the minds of young people were gone.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Families were restored to one another, broken marriages were beginning
- 8:48Speaker 3: to mend, and a selfless culture was beginning to blossom.
- 8:52Speaker 3: It was then when Josiah restored the Passover feast as
- 8:55Speaker 3: a national tradition. It had been forgotten with the age
- 8:58Speaker 3: of wicked kings, yet Josiah brought it back as a
- 9:01Speaker 3: reminder that God is the source of true freedom. After
- 9:05Speaker 3: Josiah's period of reform, he marched into battle against Egypt
- 9:09Speaker 3: to protect Judah from further harm. The two armies raged
- 9:14Speaker 3: against one another, and Josiah leapt into battle with his men.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Josiah was not a mighty man of war like his
- 9:21Speaker 3: ancestor David, He was a gentleman, but noble and filled
- 9:25Speaker 3: with courage. Necho, the king of Egypt, spotted Josiah from
- 9:28Speaker 3: the other end of the battlefield. Necho rode through the
- 9:32Speaker 3: enemy lines, toppling Judeans in his wake. Necho held his
- 9:36Speaker 3: spear high and sent it whistling through the air. Before
- 9:40Speaker 3: Josiah had a chance to even see it, the spear
- 9:43Speaker 3: impaled him. Josiah's heart stopped beating before he could even
- 9:47Speaker 3: hit the floor. Thus ended the rule of Josiah. Never
- 9:52Speaker 3: had there been a more righteous king before him. He
- 9:55Speaker 3: pursued righteousness and loved his people. Yet all men must
- 9:59Speaker 3: follow him.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Their end.
- 10:01Speaker 3: So Josiah was buried with his ancestors.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Today's scripture passage is a fantastic scripture when King Josiah
- 10:13Speaker 2: gathers the people for a tremendous momentous occasion. The book
- 10:18Speaker 2: of the law of Moses, God's perfect word of instruction
- 10:22Speaker 2: and guidance to his people has been discovered. But this
- 10:26Speaker 2: was no museum relic. This was the living word of God,
- 10:31Speaker 2: the word of God without error, inspired by God himself,
- 10:35Speaker 2: which is the key to living right before the Lord
- 10:38Speaker 2: and others. Josiah knew that people needed to hear the
- 10:41Speaker 2: word of God. Like David the psalmist and the king,
- 10:45Speaker 2: his delight was in the law of the Lord. And
- 10:48Speaker 2: if the people would only hear it and read it
- 10:50Speaker 2: and open their hearts, healing could begin in Judah. God's
- 10:55Speaker 2: law expresses God's love, his incredible love for his people
- 10:59Speaker 2: to protect them and to provide for them. It was
- 11:02Speaker 2: how Israel and Judah were set apart from all the
- 11:05Speaker 2: nations of the world. The word of God is how
- 11:08Speaker 2: the Jewish people became the people of God. After reading
- 11:13Speaker 2: the book of the covenant, Josiah renewed his promises with
- 11:16Speaker 2: God as we read in 2 Kings 23 and verse 3.
- 11:21Speaker 2: And the king stood by the pillar and made a
- 11:23Speaker 2: covenant before the Lord to walk after the Lord and
- 11:26Speaker 2: to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes
- 11:30Speaker 2: with all his heart and all his soul to perform
- 11:33Speaker 2: the words of this covenant that were written in this book.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And all the people joined in the covenant. Don't miss this.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Just as an evil king turns his people away from God,
- 11:46Speaker 2: a righteous king who seeks the Lord shepherds God's people
- 11:50Speaker 2: back to the Lord. It's a spiritual principle for all
- 11:53Speaker 2: of us. As parents, we are to live godly lives
- 11:57Speaker 2: and serve as an example to our faith for our family.
- 12:01Speaker 2: As pastors and church leaders, as national leaders and governmental leaders,
- 12:07Speaker 2: we are to turn from our sins. We are to
- 12:10Speaker 2: renew our hearts always before the Lord and call people
- 12:14Speaker 2: to follow the Lord obediently. But Josiah knew that this
- 12:19Speaker 2: was just one part of the process. Evil needed to
- 12:22Speaker 2: be rooted out, and the land rid of the idolatry
- 12:24Speaker 2: that had plagued the people for so long. He had
- 12:28Speaker 2: already torn down these evil altars in the city and
- 12:31Speaker 2: destroyed symbols of pagan gods. But the country was large,
- 12:35Speaker 2: and in the shadows of the forest were altars and
- 12:37Speaker 2: idols hiding. waiting to seduce people away from the one
- 12:40Speaker 2: true God again. These were demonic altars that needed to
- 12:44Speaker 2: be destroyed. He sent his men through the woods, taking
- 12:47Speaker 2: down the places where these horrible, evil things happened, places
- 12:52Speaker 2: where women and children were offered to bloodthirsty gods, shrines
- 12:56Speaker 2: that trapped men and women with empty promises and powerless deities.
- 13:01Speaker 2: What a lesson is this for us to learn. Though
- 13:05Speaker 2: you may not have an altar or an idol built,
- 13:08Speaker 2: In your life, there are often dark and hidden places
- 13:11Speaker 2: where temptations lurks that demand our attention, that we need
- 13:15Speaker 2: to destroy. If we are wise, as Josiah was, we
- 13:20Speaker 2: will pray for the cleansing fire of God's Spirit to
- 13:23Speaker 2: burn through any of these dark places in our lives
- 13:26Speaker 2: that threaten to rob us of the joy of the Lord.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Josiah was truly committed to cleansing the land, and when
- 13:33Speaker 2: the work was done, he called the people to a celebration.
- 13:36Speaker 2: that reminded them of how God is all about releasing
- 13:39Speaker 2: the captives and freeing his people from slavery. They observed
- 13:43Speaker 2: the Passover, glorifying God for their newfound freedom. Our reading
- 13:49Speaker 2: ends with the end of a life very well lived. Josiah,
- 13:54Speaker 2: the most righteous king in Judah, ultimately died in battle.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Never in all of his years did he stray from
- 14:00Speaker 2: seeking the Lord. This does not mean that he was
- 14:03Speaker 2: a perfect man, but he was God's man, And God
- 14:06Speaker 2: had his heart to his last day. Dear God, we
- 14:10Speaker 2: thank you for good King Josiah, for his life and
- 14:15Speaker 2: his legacy. We also pray that we will live for
- 14:18Speaker 2: you to our last day, till our very last breath,
- 14:21Speaker 2: that we will live in obedience to you and follow
- 14:24Speaker 2: you all the days of our lives until you take
- 14:27Speaker 2: us home to be with you forever. Thank you for
- 14:31Speaker 2: the strength of your spirit to do this. In Jesus' name, amen.
