- 0:14Speaker 3: Can Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:21Speaker 4: I need a party ready, Donnie said storage.
- 0:24Speaker 3: You know it's got like built in He's got a
- 0:27Speaker 3: little like a winel, you know, a little wine fridge.
- 0:29Speaker 5: Maybe, and you know, like just the whole thing, like
- 0:31Speaker 5: ready to party, both for beers to know.
- 0:33Speaker 6: And I'm thinking to myself, I can help him.
- 0:37Speaker 4: I take any of the top five quarterbacks over what
- 0:40Speaker 4: we've dealt with since Brady, and I'll scream if we
- 0:42Speaker 4: don't take Daniels, if May has gone at three, I'll
- 0:47Speaker 4: just stop talking. Then.
- 0:48Speaker 6: You know, Mike likes Jayden dammls. I like Jaydon Daniels too.
- 0:51Speaker 6: I'm with Mike, but doesn't mean that like you're wrong. Yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 6: I don't know, and he's too nice to just say yeah,
- 0:57Speaker 6: I don't buy it sucks And.
- 0:58Speaker 4: He just doesn't like the squint.
- 1:00Speaker 6: It's squinting because Mike is not sold on Jaydon Daniel Paul.
- 1:03Speaker 4: You're doing is repeating what everyone else is saying, right right,
- 1:06Speaker 4: but you're doing it while you're eating a lemon and.
- 1:08Speaker 6: Right he's squinting. I understand why you would think that
- 1:11Speaker 6: he's not a good prospect, Evan, because you don't know,
- 1:13Speaker 6: like I know.
- 1:14Speaker 7: This is how people think.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I said, email said I went to Northeastern, and Paul
- 1:18Speaker 4: saying I don't care that he went to Northeastern. I
- 1:20Speaker 4: still don't care about PFF stats.
- 1:22Speaker 6: You know how I usually say I never said that.
- 1:24Speaker 6: I am quite sure sure that I said exactly.
- 1:28Speaker 4: So every ball that each team has, you know that
- 1:32Speaker 4: that big ball bag here, it's infamous.
- 1:35Speaker 5: This is Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota's official website.

- 1:43Speaker 4: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is to a
- 1:47Speaker 4: Thursday here at the stadium.
- 1:49Speaker 8: It's Tuesday. It's you know, if it was draped.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Okay, I need to go to sleep and then wake
- 2:02Speaker 4: up and start this whole day over. I swear to god,
- 2:06Speaker 4: I had this whole thing in my mind that it
- 2:07Speaker 4: was Thursday. We're a week away from the draft. What's
- 2:12Speaker 4: happening to me, Paul, I ask you? Because right with me? Right, okay,
- 2:18Speaker 4: it's Tuesday here at Jilt Stadium and we're a week
- 2:22Speaker 4: and two days away from the nine days Yeah, nine
- 2:25Speaker 4: days away.
- 2:26Speaker 7: He couldn't do that.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yeah, And it's Tamara, it's Evan, it's Paul, it's me,
- 2:31Speaker 4: it's Jewels in the Booth with Chris Ferrera backing her up,
- 2:37Speaker 4: and Marine is away at Disney on.
- 2:41Speaker 7: Disney Vacation, Disney World, Disney World.
- 2:43Speaker 9: I will say this week communing has been fabulous because
- 2:47Speaker 9: all the kiddos are on break.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's beautiful.
- 2:49Speaker 7: Great.
- 2:50Speaker 4: I didn't even think of that.
- 2:51Speaker 8: It's so great. I love it.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Easy sailing.
- 2:54Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:54Speaker 4: So obviously we've got to talk about this draft, and
- 2:58Speaker 4: I want to start right off the top because we
- 3:01Speaker 4: often reference Paul's shows, and yesterday was listening to one
- 3:05Speaker 4: of them and they were talking about something that Greg
- 3:07Speaker 4: Badard wrote, and he talked to you know, unnamed, but
- 3:12Speaker 4: a an old time NFL executive who's touched all aspects
- 3:19Speaker 4: of he's been a head coach, he was a GM
- 3:22Speaker 4: I guess he was a quarterbacks coach. He's touched all
- 3:26Speaker 4: aspects of interacting with a quarterback. And he was saying
- 3:30Speaker 4: that as often the case, and he thinks it is
- 3:33Speaker 4: this year that teams start looking at these quarterbacks through
- 3:38Speaker 4: beer goggles that they're so desperate to have the guy
- 3:43Speaker 4: and they overrate these guys. And it resonated with me
- 3:47Speaker 4: because that's what I've been saying, are we overrating these quarterbacks,
- 3:51Speaker 4: maybe with the exception of Caleb Williams, because you know,
- 3:55Speaker 4: everybody needs a quarterback and you want these guys to
- 3:58Speaker 4: be good, and you know we're lowering the bar.
- 4:02Speaker 9: I really hope that's not true. I mean, if you
- 4:04Speaker 9: look at the twenty twenty one class and you see
- 4:06Speaker 9: how the overreaching happened there and what happened with that,
- 4:09Speaker 9: you would hope that they're going into this year's class
- 4:12Speaker 9: with twenty twenty vision like I would be getting Lasik
- 4:16Speaker 9: right now. I'm making sure I can see right because
- 4:18Speaker 9: you saw what happened with that, and I know that
- 4:19Speaker 9: we don't have a crystal ball to see how these
- 4:21Speaker 9: guys are going to turn out. But if you're not
- 4:23Speaker 9: absolutely sold on the guy, I don't want you to
- 4:25Speaker 9: reach for him.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Because the average person, the layman like myself, looks at
- 4:31Speaker 4: pass drafts and say, how could anybody think Josh Rosen
- 4:34Speaker 4: was going to be a franchise quarterback? You know, like
- 4:38Speaker 4: just one example, but there's plenty of those examples like
- 4:41Speaker 4: how do you miss that bad?
- 4:43Speaker 7: I think a lot of it. And when you say
- 4:45Speaker 7: are we lowering the bar? I think the bar is relative,
- 4:48Speaker 7: like are we lowering the bar to what? None of
- 4:52Speaker 7: these guys we can sit here and say this guy
- 4:55Speaker 7: is going to be the next Patrick Mahomes and that
- 4:57Speaker 7: guy's going to be the next Josh Allen because nobody knows.
- 5:00Speaker 7: So every year these quarterbacks are getting graded of off
- 5:03Speaker 7: of potential of what they could be at the next level.
- 5:06Speaker 7: So I don't know what we're what what's the bar?
- 5:08Speaker 7: You know, like what are we.
- 5:09Speaker 9: And I think we didn't know that Josh Allen was
- 5:12Speaker 9: going to look like that or Patrick Mahons.
- 5:14Speaker 7: And I guess that's kind of what I'm getting at
- 5:16Speaker 7: is at the end of the day, a lot of
- 5:18Speaker 7: it is between the years. Yeah, And it's it's not
- 5:21Speaker 7: just between the ears, between the lines. It's also off
- 5:23Speaker 7: the field and who has the drive and who has
- 5:26Speaker 7: the competitiveness and who has the want to And I
- 5:29Speaker 7: think you mentioned Josh Rosen. That was Josh Rosen's problem.
- 5:33Speaker 7: That's Zack Wilson's problem. Zack Wilson is not revy like
- 5:37Speaker 7: it's not a talent issue with Zack Wilson. Zack Wilson
- 5:40Speaker 7: just doesn't give a damn and that's how you get
- 5:42Speaker 7: to where you're at at this point, was Zack Wilson.
- 5:45Speaker 7: So I think that that's one of the things that
- 5:47Speaker 7: you hope that teams that have all the information and
- 5:49Speaker 7: have all the access to these guys have a leg
- 5:53Speaker 7: up on everybody, is that you would think. So they're
- 5:55Speaker 7: in the room with these guys, they're and they're getting
- 5:57Speaker 7: to know how they're wired, and they're getting to know,
- 6:00Speaker 7: you know how, what's important to them and those types
- 6:02Speaker 7: of things. This is why guys like JJ McCarthy have
- 6:05Speaker 7: these these rises up the board because we watch them
- 6:09Speaker 7: in the fall. They're not they're just what they are.
- 6:12Speaker 7: But then you get to this time of year and
- 6:14Speaker 7: you hear about the visits and the interviews and the
- 6:17Speaker 7: whiteboard and all these other things, and all of a sudden,
- 6:20Speaker 7: now he's a top five pick.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Yep.
- 6:22Speaker 6: So yeah, I agree Freddie that we probably do overrate
- 6:26Speaker 6: them a little bit because of the position. But I
- 6:29Speaker 6: also agree with Evans's point about I think that the
- 6:31Speaker 6: vast majority of guys that miss all positions early in
- 6:34Speaker 6: the draft, it's not necessarily a talent problem. It's not
- 6:38Speaker 6: because some coach looked at that guy and thought he
- 6:42Speaker 6: could do X and he physically can't. It's more of
- 6:45Speaker 6: the other stuff that Evan's talking about. Shouldn't there be
- 6:48Speaker 6: a way to uncover that, like how important it is
- 6:52Speaker 6: to people? I'm not saying you do like psychological but yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 6: but no, I guess an example, some people just don't
- 7:00Speaker 6: test well. But as an example, like Christian Barmore was
- 7:03Speaker 6: a guy who a lot of people at Alabama thought
- 7:05Speaker 6: football wasn't all that important to him. That's why he
- 7:10Speaker 6: kind of dropped down a little bit to the second round.
- 7:13Speaker 4: But exactly, but it wasn't.
- 7:15Speaker 6: But it wasn't a talent issue because people thought that
- 7:18Speaker 6: that he wasn't necessarily a high motor guy, and he
- 7:21Speaker 6: had thought about quitting I think at one point at Alabama.
- 7:24Speaker 4: But those things were identified and that's why he dropped.
- 7:27Speaker 6: Why didn't ident But they were wrong. I'm not done.
- 7:31Speaker 6: They were wrong. But he doesn't have those issues. But
- 7:35Speaker 6: I'm just saying, or he got past those issues and
- 7:38Speaker 6: he's been a productive player. The opposite can be true too,
- 7:42Speaker 6: Like you think that a guy doesn't have any problems
- 7:45Speaker 6: like Josh Rosen to use the example you brought up.
- 7:48Speaker 7: But obviously he can play.
- 7:50Speaker 6: He has the ability to throw the ball at the
- 7:51Speaker 6: NFL level, but there's other things that go into it
- 7:54Speaker 6: that he evidently didn't have. I find it really amazing
- 7:58Speaker 6: with him, in particular that he got drafted in the
- 8:01Speaker 6: top ten with Arizona. They moved on when they had
- 8:04Speaker 6: a coaching change. Happens all the time. New guy comes in,
- 8:07Speaker 6: he wants his own guy. He never really got another shot. No,
- 8:11Speaker 6: he played a little bit in Miami, yep, but not
- 8:15Speaker 6: really anything extensive that you could see.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Can this guy?
- 8:17Speaker 6: But he's no one's ever really given him a shot.
- 8:20Speaker 7: Trey Lance has never had a shot. Yeah, well Trey
- 8:24Speaker 7: Lance started, he got Yeah, but I mean he's he
- 8:27Speaker 7: lost his job twice for injury. It just wasn't really.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Yeah, But like I think when he he hasn't proven
- 8:36Speaker 6: he can't play, like for whatever reason, no one is
- 8:39Speaker 6: interested in finding out.
- 8:40Speaker 7: If Josh or not.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Like And my guess is it's all the stuff that
- 8:44Speaker 6: Evan's talking about that's especially a quarterback probably.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Just I just I just look at the guys who
- 8:51Speaker 4: you know, obviously, no one's that can't miss. But the
- 8:54Speaker 4: guys who were true blue Chippers that were drafted high,
- 8:57Speaker 4: and I'm talking, you know, recently, like Andrew.
- 9:00Speaker 7: You know, we don't throw it like I try not
- 9:04Speaker 7: to throw generational talent around as much anymore. Andrew luck
- 9:07Speaker 7: was a generational talent, you.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Know, and and even I and I don't say he's
- 9:12Speaker 4: a generational talent, but someone who deserved to be drafted
- 9:17Speaker 4: one one. Trevor Lawrence. I mean, obviously he's having his
- 9:21Speaker 4: you know, stumblings, you know, over in Jacksonville, but I
- 9:25Speaker 4: still think that he deserved to be one one. A
- 9:30Speaker 4: lot of guys, though, that are up there in the
- 9:33Speaker 4: top five, I don't think deserve to be up there,
- 9:35Speaker 4: And they're just there because we need somebody to be
- 9:38Speaker 4: up there that's a quarterback.
- 9:40Speaker 7: And I mean I think that's true for JJ McCarthy.
- 9:44Speaker 7: I think Drake May and jayde and Daniels are worth
- 9:46Speaker 7: top five picks because of the physical ability you do.
- 9:50Speaker 4: And that's where I want to get, you know, obviously,
- 9:52Speaker 4: I want to get this a long way to Grandma's house,
- 9:55Speaker 4: but that's where I want to get to. Are these
- 9:57Speaker 4: guys truly worthy of being up there or are they
- 10:01Speaker 4: only up there because of the competition because that's who's available.
- 10:04Speaker 7: So like, if you were to do a true big
- 10:07Speaker 7: board of this class where positional value and the fact
- 10:10Speaker 7: that their quarterbacks is not supposed to be part of this,
- 10:13Speaker 7: then pretty much everybody has Jaden Daniels in Drake May
- 10:19Speaker 7: in their top ten prospects in the entire draft, and
- 10:22Speaker 7: then those guys get propped up to two and three
- 10:24Speaker 7: maybe a little bit by the fact that they play.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I know everybody's got him up there, but is that correct?
- 10:28Speaker 6: But like, just to use the quarterbacks and you have
- 10:31Speaker 6: the beast in front of you that you printed out
- 10:33Speaker 6: and killed a lot of trees.
- 10:36Speaker 4: So renewable resource you can always plant.
- 10:38Speaker 6: More So, Michael Pennix is a very gifted passer. He's
- 10:43Speaker 6: got them. Dane Brugler, I can never say Brugler. He
- 10:47Speaker 6: hasn't rated in the mid fifties, right, so he doesn't
- 10:51Speaker 6: get the quarterback bump. He's raking the players as he
- 10:54Speaker 6: sees them fitting in. Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Well, I think Pennis because of his age and injury,
- 11:00Speaker 4: that's why he's.
- 11:01Speaker 6: In the skill set. Like he's a really gifted passer.
- 11:04Speaker 6: But that's kind of it, yeah, whereas these other guys
- 11:07Speaker 6: can pass and move, yeah, and offer a different level
- 11:12Speaker 6: of athleticism I think than some of the other guys.
- 11:15Speaker 6: That's why I would separate the top three from the rest.
- 11:19Speaker 6: But a lot of people putting McCarthy right in there,
- 11:22Speaker 6: So I think he has them in like twenty one.
- 11:24Speaker 7: So like to keep going with Dan because the Beast
- 11:27Speaker 7: is right there in front of you. He has Drake
- 11:29Speaker 7: May as the fourth rated prospect on his board, He
- 11:33Speaker 7: has Jade and Daniels at eight, and he has JJ
- 11:35Speaker 7: at twenty one, twenty one, and Daniel Jeremiah. I think
- 11:38Speaker 7: has JJ in the twenty to twenty five range as well.
- 11:41Speaker 7: That's a player to me that gets overdrafted every single year.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Is the JJ McCarthy's the world because these coaches and
- 11:47Speaker 7: executives fall in love with the intangibles.
- 11:49Speaker 6: That's the quarterback bump. If he goes in the top five,
- 11:52Speaker 6: like a lot of people think, I think most people
- 11:56Speaker 6: feel like he's a mid twenties prospect.
- 11:58Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, think that Drake May and Jayden Daniels fit
- 12:02Speaker 7: that that same way that McCarthy does.
- 12:05Speaker 6: And it goes back to Tamara's point when you brought
- 12:06Speaker 6: up Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. That's the kind I
- 12:10Speaker 6: mean again, no one's if anybody knew that it's gonna happen,
- 12:15Speaker 6: everybody would take in these two guys one too. Yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 6: but that's the to me, that's the upside that you're
- 12:20Speaker 6: looking at, is those kinds of skill sets with these
- 12:22Speaker 6: three guys, Caleb Williams we've talked about with Mahomes and
- 12:26Speaker 6: you know May and Daniels, with Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
- 12:30Speaker 6: If they all hit, no one's gonna sit there and say, Wow,
- 12:32Speaker 6: I can't believe.
- 12:33Speaker 7: They took Drake May three.
- 12:35Speaker 9: And then I feel like you also have to like
- 12:37Speaker 9: add into the equation the teams that they're going to
- 12:39Speaker 9: go play for, and the systems that they're going to
- 12:41Speaker 9: go play for, and the pieces that are around them too,
- 12:42Speaker 9: because like, what if someone's really great and then they
- 12:45Speaker 9: have no support around them, they have no offensive line,
- 12:47Speaker 9: no weapons, bad coaching, like pretty much a situation that
- 12:51Speaker 9: Trevor Lawrence went into, like he went into a disaster
- 12:54Speaker 9: his first year.
- 12:55Speaker 7: So that's such a great point because you're evaluating the
- 12:58Speaker 7: prospect in the draft is different between what happens to
- 13:02Speaker 7: them after that, Like their development after that is now
- 13:05Speaker 7: on all the teams to to your point, put the
- 13:07Speaker 7: right stuff around them, you know, to iron out some
- 13:10Speaker 7: of their weaknesses in their game and things like that.
- 13:12Speaker 7: And I think a lot of the time these guys
- 13:14Speaker 7: fail because of that piece of it, not because they
- 13:17Speaker 7: come into the draft and they get drafted high and
- 13:19Speaker 7: they don't have the talent. It's because they go to
- 13:21Speaker 7: situations that ruin them. I mean, we kind of had
- 13:24Speaker 7: one of those here in some ways. So I talked
- 13:26Speaker 7: about that. The big part of it were you went
- 13:28Speaker 7: with us last week.
- 13:29Speaker 6: I know that you were doing the interviews on one
- 13:32Speaker 6: of the days. Yeah, And I brought that up Freddy
- 13:34Speaker 6: with with Mike and you and just if there could
- 13:37Speaker 6: be a really end depth, in depth study as to
- 13:40Speaker 6: why these guys fail and take away a lot of
- 13:44Speaker 6: take a lot of factors, like everybody is just it's
- 13:47Speaker 6: such a blanket thing like the guy played too soon,
- 13:49Speaker 6: you ruined him, he wasn't ready. They ruined them, or
- 13:52Speaker 6: you know, whatever the case may be. Whereas all these
- 13:56Speaker 6: other things like maybe he played too soon and it
- 14:01Speaker 6: ruined him, Maybe he played too soon and he didn't
- 14:05Speaker 6: have the didn't have the mental toughness to fight through it.
- 14:08Speaker 6: So you just as Fred pointed out last week, you
- 14:11Speaker 6: were just going to find that out anyway, whether it
- 14:12Speaker 6: was going to be in the first year or like
- 14:14Speaker 6: mac Jones in year two and year three. You know,
- 14:16Speaker 6: at some point it's going to come out. But what
- 14:19Speaker 6: kind of weapons does he have to work with? What
- 14:21Speaker 6: kind of protection does he get, What kind of a
- 14:23Speaker 6: system is he entering into. Is it conduce it to
- 14:25Speaker 6: his skill set? What kind of defense does he have?
- 14:28Speaker 6: Is he constantly you know, throwing the ball forty five
- 14:31Speaker 6: times because he's playing from behind every week. There's a
- 14:33Speaker 6: million different factors that go into this. And I think
- 14:37Speaker 6: that just to say, like, well that guy, he was
- 14:39Speaker 6: a bust, I.
- 14:41Speaker 9: Would love that, Paul, especially when you're looking at somebody
- 14:43Speaker 9: like Bryce Young, for example in the Panthers, Like if
- 14:46Speaker 9: he gets keeps getting a new head coach every year,
- 14:47Speaker 9: like what's going to happen to him?
- 14:50Speaker 7: Right?
- 14:50Speaker 9: And they keep trading away their pieces and his team
- 14:52Speaker 9: isn't very good.
- 14:55Speaker 6: You find out, you know that Frank Reich didn't want him.
- 14:58Speaker 6: You know, you think that's easy to play under a
- 15:00Speaker 6: coach that didn't want you. And I'm not blaming Frank
- 15:02Speaker 6: Reich by the way, but that came out after he
- 15:04Speaker 6: got fired last year, is that he wanted Stroud. Now,
- 15:07Speaker 6: I know a lot of guys, after the guy hits,
- 15:09Speaker 6: they want, you know, the the Ben McAdoo theory after
- 15:13Speaker 6: the guy hits, like you know, I was on that.
- 15:15Speaker 7: Yeah, so I had that nailed it.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Maybe someone's listening can send me the exact quote from
- 15:21Speaker 4: the badart story. Uh, the quote is from this NFL executive.
- 15:25Speaker 6: I thought it was Charlie again.
- 15:27Speaker 4: It was a cautionary tale.
- 15:28Speaker 6: It well, it kind of sounds like it could have been.
- 15:31Speaker 7: It could have been he said GM. He was never
- 15:34Speaker 7: a GM.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Yeah, it could have been.
- 15:36Speaker 7: I just don't know what the alternative is, you know,
- 15:39Speaker 7: I agreed that the likelihood is is that if five
- 15:43Speaker 7: quarterbacks get taken in the first round, two of them
- 15:46Speaker 7: will probably be pretty good, like can play in the league.
- 15:49Speaker 7: One of them will probably be really good, and then
- 15:51Speaker 7: the other three teams are going to be Zach Wilson
- 15:54Speaker 7: and you're gonna be back in the draft two years
- 15:55Speaker 7: from now looking for a quarterback, right, and I but
- 15:57Speaker 7: the alternative is to not take the swing and and
- 16:00Speaker 7: just forever be in quarterback purgatory. That's the gamble.
- 16:05Speaker 6: They can either take a guy and have them bust
- 16:07Speaker 6: and you have to do it again, or you cannot
- 16:10Speaker 6: take a guy and you still have to do it again.
- 16:12Speaker 7: I mean the Jets took Donald and Zach Wilson within
- 16:15Speaker 7: like a three or four year span, and they missed
- 16:17Speaker 7: both times, so that that can easily happen.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 9: I also think when you have two of those three
- 16:25Speaker 9: teams in the top three with brand new coaching staffs too,
- 16:29Speaker 9: it's like it can go either way for both the
- 16:31Speaker 9: commanders and here like all of us have brand new everything.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Yeah. How often, you know, do three of the top
- 16:40Speaker 4: three teams quarterbacks all need quarterbacks every year? That? I mean,
- 16:44Speaker 4: I haven't I can't remember, but.
- 16:47Speaker 7: It was it was three quarterbacks.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Yeah, usually you're drafting that high because you have that quarterback.
- 16:55Speaker 7: There's been a lot of I would say, like in threes,
- 16:58Speaker 7: but when you got four inner, I don't even know
- 17:00Speaker 7: if that's ever happened.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Last year was three out of four, then two years
- 17:05Speaker 6: earlier it was the first three. There have been times
- 17:09Speaker 6: where I think there's been some other examples of three.
- 17:13Speaker 6: I don't know about four.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, and that somebody said that this could
- 17:18Speaker 4: be a record amount of offensive players. If you're a
- 17:22Speaker 4: set on offense and you're looking for defensive help, this
- 17:25Speaker 4: is a good draft this year because you're gonna get
- 17:27Speaker 4: a pick of some of the best players.
- 17:28Speaker 7: Well, the defensive players aren't as good though they're not.
- 17:32Speaker 4: No, Well, cornerback's pretty deep.
- 17:34Speaker 7: Cornerback's deep, but I wouldn't say that there's top end
- 17:36Speaker 7: talent in the cornerback class. Edge is really good too
- 17:40Speaker 7: in this class, But Dallas Turner is probably the best
- 17:43Speaker 7: prospect in the edge group. I mean, I know it
- 17:46Speaker 7: depends on who you ask. You know, some people like Verse,
- 17:48Speaker 7: some people like Law too, but I think Dallas Turner
- 17:51Speaker 7: is the consensus. But he's not He's not Miles Garrett,
- 17:54Speaker 7: you know, Like he's not like one of these a
- 17:56Speaker 7: you know, freak of nature edge rushers that's gonna go
- 17:59Speaker 7: have a chance to go with the first overall pick
- 18:01Speaker 7: and most drafts, so right, Like, he's not one of
- 18:04Speaker 7: those types of guys.
- 18:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I like Verse, not that it matters because it's
- 18:08Speaker 6: not you. He's going to go in the middle of
- 18:10Speaker 6: the first round somewhere, and not really well, but I
- 18:13Speaker 6: love his story.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Our first email handed one around. Our first emailer, Johnny
- 18:19Speaker 4: from Germany. This is nice to see Tamara round again.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Uh So, my question, what would be the favorite draft pick,
- 18:26Speaker 4: not may or Daniels for each of you? Maybe one
- 18:29Speaker 4: not at three? So other than quarterback, what's who do
- 18:33Speaker 4: you hope that the Patriots get the most?
- 18:38Speaker 6: I don't have a specific I mean I hope they
- 18:40Speaker 6: get a wide receiver who can play immediately the most,
- 18:43Speaker 6: But like I don't know which one it is. You know,
- 18:47Speaker 6: you guys have heard all those names down there in
- 18:49Speaker 6: like the third round, you know, like I asked the
- 18:53Speaker 6: Beast the Beast Master today about that. He mentioned Malachi
- 18:56Speaker 6: Corley is one of the guys. I mean, just someone
- 19:01Speaker 6: they should be able to draft a receiver in the
- 19:03Speaker 6: third round who can play right away. I'm not talking
- 19:06Speaker 6: about excel right away. I mean play, you know, can
- 19:09Speaker 6: you get a Pop Douglas right?
- 19:10Speaker 10: You know?
- 19:11Speaker 7: Right? You know?
- 19:11Speaker 6: You know I would like more than that, but something
- 19:15Speaker 6: that that would most excite me because they need they
- 19:18Speaker 6: need some weapons, they need some help on offense.
- 19:20Speaker 9: I'm going to be boring and say, Joe Alt, I
- 19:24Speaker 9: think if they did trade back and they were able
- 19:25Speaker 9: to get him, that'd be really great. Just addressing offensive
- 19:28Speaker 9: line needs to protect whatever quarterback is out there.
- 19:32Speaker 7: Okay, assuming they go quarterback at three, I would say
- 19:35Speaker 7: ad Ni Mitchell from Texas Adie Mitchell. I think that
- 19:39Speaker 7: that is the best combination of size, speed, upside, be
- 19:43Speaker 7: able to play on the outside that they're going to
- 19:46Speaker 7: have a chance to get. Like Brian Thomas Junior is
- 19:48Speaker 7: the dream, but he's not going to fall that far.
- 19:51Speaker 6: I kind of like Evan's thinking to like second round
- 19:54Speaker 6: receivers that don't wait till the third.
- 19:56Speaker 7: The third round is tough because I think all those guys,
- 19:59Speaker 7: although they're is talent, in the depth of the class,
- 20:02Speaker 7: it's all complimentary guys like I don't see a Jalen
- 20:06Speaker 7: Polk being a number one receiver in the league. I don't.
- 20:09Speaker 7: I'm not a big Malachi Gorley guy in general, but
- 20:12Speaker 7: I don't see him being, you know, three years from now,
- 20:15Speaker 7: it's looking and saying, oh, well, that was like the
- 20:17Speaker 7: AJ Brown of this class or the Terry McLaurin of
- 20:19Speaker 7: this class. There's probably gonna be one or two of
- 20:21Speaker 7: those types of guys that do end up, you know,
- 20:24Speaker 7: exceeding expectations, But I think at the top of the
- 20:27Speaker 7: second round is where you can get place. You know,
- 20:30Speaker 7: your guy Lad mcconca, it's going to be a tackle.
- 20:33Speaker 9: Do you think it's better to get a second second
- 20:36Speaker 9: round wide receiver or a second round tackle.
- 20:40Speaker 7: I go back and forth on that one. I would
- 20:42Speaker 7: say receiver because I just think that that player is
- 20:45Speaker 7: gonna make more of an immediate impact than the tackle.
- 20:48Speaker 7: I think once you get to those second round tackles,
- 20:50Speaker 7: you're starting to talk about some developmental guys.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Who's the behemoth? I think he's from Texas. Is it
- 20:55Speaker 4: Mims or not?
- 20:56Speaker 6: Georgia. He's the guy I like to but he's played, Yeah,
- 21:01Speaker 6: that would be my worry about him.
- 21:02Speaker 7: He's got seven career starts, like eight hundred snaps in college.
- 21:07Speaker 7: He was injured last year and then he was behind
- 21:08Speaker 7: Broderick Jones before that. So you know that's tough with Georgia.
- 21:13Speaker 7: You have so many NFL players around you that to
- 21:16Speaker 7: crack the lineup can be difficult. But he's a guy
- 21:19Speaker 7: that I wonder if he could last at thirty four
- 21:22Speaker 7: because of those reasons. You know, he's got first round
- 21:24Speaker 7: tape all day, but teams might be scared off by
- 21:27Speaker 7: the injury last year, might be scared off by the
- 21:29Speaker 7: fact that they don't have a ton of film to
- 21:30Speaker 7: pull from yea to really see him. But if you
- 21:33Speaker 7: just turn on the tape, then he's a first round
- 21:35Speaker 7: grade one hundred.
- 21:37Speaker 6: The tackle wide receiver thing in the second round, I
- 21:39Speaker 6: think is hard. I don't really care as much about
- 21:42Speaker 6: playing immediately because I don't like, I'm not I'm not
- 21:45Speaker 6: sure mayo, I don't have to worry about like what
- 21:48Speaker 6: my record is right away. But I but Evan makes
- 21:52Speaker 6: a good point about, like, if you think there's that
- 21:54Speaker 6: big of a difference between the caliber of player, that's
- 21:57Speaker 6: why point I listened to to. I'm just gonna call
- 22:00Speaker 6: him Dane from now on this morning. You know when
- 22:03Speaker 6: I was on my show Fred, it was actually my show. Yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 6: he did talk a lot about that sort of drop
- 22:10Speaker 6: off after like six or seven tackles, and that's what
- 22:14Speaker 6: you might get at the top of the second round.
- 22:17Speaker 6: And if it's that big of a difference, then it's
- 22:20Speaker 6: it's gonna be hard to say, ad Mitchell is not
- 22:23Speaker 6: substantially better than some tackle that's available with the eighth
- 22:28Speaker 6: tackle off the board or the seventh Taple's.
- 22:31Speaker 7: That's how I'm looking at it is that you got
- 22:33Speaker 7: to stick to the board, and I feel like at
- 22:35Speaker 7: thirty four, the tackle pick is more likely to be
- 22:38Speaker 7: a reach than the receiver pick. At that point, you know,
- 22:41Speaker 7: maybe a guy like Mims falls, maybe a guy like
- 22:43Speaker 7: Tyler Goeyiton from Oklahoma falls, just because of the way
- 22:45Speaker 7: the board breaks down. But assuming that the consensus top
- 22:50Speaker 7: five or six tackles are off the board, I have
- 22:53Speaker 7: to think that the fifth receiver off the board might
- 22:56Speaker 7: be better than like the seventh or eighth tackle off the board.
- 22:59Speaker 7: So I don't think the order of operations matters all
- 23:01Speaker 7: that much. I just want to take the best player
- 23:04Speaker 7: available at thirty.
- 23:05Speaker 4: So someone who might be a receiver who might be
- 23:07Speaker 4: available like in the third round. Yeah, what do you
- 23:09Speaker 4: think of Johnny Wilson from Florida?
- 23:11Speaker 7: Interesting player. I don't know him. So Johnny Wilson is
- 23:15Speaker 7: like six six, three hundred and thirty pounds or two
- 23:18Speaker 7: hundred and thirty pounds three hundred to be crazy, two
- 23:20Speaker 7: hundred and thirty pounds. Quite a receiver, two hundred and
- 23:22Speaker 7: thirty pounds, built like a tight end, but moves like
- 23:25Speaker 7: a receiver.
- 23:26Speaker 6: It's kind of crazy. It's a weird It's the weirdest
- 23:30Speaker 6: player that I think in this in this receiver class
- 23:33Speaker 6: to project and understand, because he plays like a wide receiver,
- 23:38Speaker 6: but he's in the tight end's body like he's not
- 23:40Speaker 6: very consistent at the catch point.
- 23:41Speaker 7: He's not one of these. But he can move like
- 23:45Speaker 7: he can run routes at that size.
- 23:48Speaker 4: So he intrigues me a little bit.
- 23:49Speaker 7: Yeah, he's a he's an interesting player. I just the
- 23:52Speaker 7: part that I think concerns me with him is I
- 23:54Speaker 7: think what Paul is kind of getting at is what
- 23:56Speaker 7: is he you know, what position does he actually play?
- 24:00Speaker 7: And where are we actually going to find a way
- 24:02Speaker 7: for him to be a high volume guy. But as
- 24:04Speaker 7: an athlete, he's just super different that he moves that
- 24:08Speaker 7: well at that size but doesn't like really play to
- 24:10Speaker 7: that size, like it doesn't play like a big receiver,
- 24:12Speaker 7: but he moves like a small receiver.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Yeah, bizarre, that's interesting. Some people have him at six seven.
- 24:18Speaker 7: You interested in lunch?
- 24:19Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we gotta get lunch.
- 24:20Speaker 9: Ok.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Yeah, I just got the message from Juweles.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Oh oh so yeah, what are you gonna get Italian?
- 24:27Speaker 4: You're gonna get an Italian. Yeah, I got a small
- 24:30Speaker 4: PEP make it easy, all right. Web radio at patries
- 24:34Speaker 4: dot com is the email address. We get a lot
- 24:36Speaker 4: of people emailing. Uh, we still don't have a phone system. Yeah,
- 24:41Speaker 4: marine's not here. And then he just sent me an email.
- 24:44Speaker 4: We need even more equipment to make it happen. So boy, Yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 4: this thing is getting more complicated by the day. Jason
- 24:51Speaker 4: writes in We're obviously getting a lot of emails about
- 24:55Speaker 4: the quarterback, and that's fine. Like I said, we're nine
- 24:57Speaker 4: days away from this. What be an historic pick for
- 25:02Speaker 4: the New England Patriots, Jason says Jade and Daniels completed
- 25:05Speaker 4: seventy three percent of his throws in college versus Drake
- 25:08Speaker 4: May sixty three percent. Jaden threw sixteen more TD passes
- 25:12Speaker 4: in May. Yes, Jaden had better talent to throw to,
- 25:14Speaker 4: but he's also competing against much tougher competition. May throw
- 25:19Speaker 4: nine interceptions Daniels through four. May rush for four hundred
- 25:22Speaker 4: forty nine yards. Daniels rush for one and thirty four.
- 25:25Speaker 4: I understand the hype for Drake May. He's tall. Josh
- 25:27Speaker 4: Allen like has years to grow and learn, and supposedly
- 25:31Speaker 4: has a cannon for an arm, but something just doesn't
- 25:33Speaker 4: click for me with him as a Patriots fan. Helped
- 25:35Speaker 4: me get excited about Drake may as he will probably
- 25:38Speaker 4: be our third pick in the first round. I can't
- 25:41Speaker 4: do it on my own. Go easy on me, Evan
- 25:44Speaker 4: and Paul.
- 25:45Speaker 7: Would I would just say that that's a lot of
- 25:47Speaker 7: box score scouting.
- 25:48Speaker 8: Yeah, I was gonna say.
- 25:49Speaker 7: I would go watch. I'm not asking you to go
- 25:52Speaker 7: do what I do and grind the tape and all
- 25:54Speaker 7: that kind of stuff, but just go watch like some
- 25:56Speaker 7: YouTube highlights, like actually watch the guy play, because while
- 25:59Speaker 7: looking at the box score is not going to tell
- 26:01Speaker 7: you anything.
- 26:02Speaker 9: Yeah. I was going to say the same thing too,
- 26:04Speaker 9: and just say you have to actually look at their
- 26:05Speaker 9: system and how it translates to the NFL, because if
- 26:08Speaker 9: you're just looking at numbers, I mean, then a lot
- 26:10Speaker 9: more quarterbacks would be in the picture if all you're
- 26:12Speaker 9: looking at is just ats.
- 26:13Speaker 6: So I looked at Jayden Daniels a little bit. And
- 26:16Speaker 6: I'm not positive on the timelines on this, but his
- 26:19Speaker 6: best year by far at Arizona State was when Brandon
- 26:22Speaker 6: Ayuk was still there early on, and his best year
- 26:26Speaker 6: by far at LSU was when Malik Neighbors and Brian
- 26:30Speaker 6: Thomas were there. So I do wonder if this is
- 26:33Speaker 6: a guy who would look more like Drake May look
- 26:35Speaker 6: this year if he was playing with Drake May's cast
- 26:39Speaker 6: of supporting characters. Yeah, that's probably and that's just I mean,
- 26:45Speaker 6: that's a little bit of a it's a projection.
- 26:47Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Daniels had by far the better year. I don't really
- 26:51Speaker 6: care about completion percentage quite honestly, it's to me the
- 26:55Speaker 6: most meaningless stat in football. But you can watch a
- 27:00Speaker 6: guy and I would say that Drake May struggles with accuracy.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Like I don't think that that's unfair to say. So
- 27:07Speaker 6: no one's jumping on you. I think a lot of
- 27:09Speaker 6: people can look at all these guys and come up
- 27:11Speaker 6: with a guy that they like the best. I think
- 27:14Speaker 6: it's kind of in the eye of the beholder in
- 27:15Speaker 6: some of these cases. So if you like Jayden and
- 27:18Speaker 6: Daniels better, There's a guy that called in a couple
- 27:20Speaker 6: of months ago yelling at all of us about Jayden Daniels.
- 27:23Speaker 6: If you remember, yeah, the guy from Albany, Right, He's
- 27:25Speaker 6: been on Jaden Daniels for a long time.
- 27:27Speaker 7: There's there's nothing not to like about Jayden Daniels like Idaic. Yeah,
- 27:31Speaker 7: some of the passing profile is not great in terms
- 27:34Speaker 7: of translation to the NFL, you know, passing up middle
- 27:37Speaker 7: of the field throws it probably being the biggest thing
- 27:39Speaker 7: his His profile matches a lot of the same things
- 27:43Speaker 7: that Justin Fields was coming out of Ohio State, which
- 27:46Speaker 7: I think is probably my biggest concern. You know, takes
- 27:48Speaker 7: a lot of sacks, holds the ball a lot, passes
- 27:51Speaker 7: up throws that are open NFL open type, throws over
- 27:54Speaker 7: the middle of the field. Like, those are the concerns
- 27:57Speaker 7: that you have. But his tape is electric. I mean
- 27:59Speaker 7: he watched the high the highlights, you watch whatever you
- 28:01Speaker 7: want to watch, go watch them play against Florida. I
- 28:03Speaker 7: think he had like six hundred total yards of offense.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Like he just guy can't be stopped. He's unstoppable.
- 28:09Speaker 9: It'd be so fun too if we were able to
- 28:10Speaker 9: draft one of his wide receivers and kind of get.
- 28:13Speaker 7: Like a yeah, I mean that I don't.
- 28:15Speaker 8: Joe Burrow and Chase situation.
- 28:16Speaker 7: How you never know neighbors. I think is gone by
- 28:18Speaker 7: six to the Giants. I think that's probably his floor
- 28:21Speaker 7: and Brian Thomas junior. I think is a top twenty guy.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Maybe he's lines.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Maybe. Joe writes in if the Patriots draft JJ McCarthy,
- 28:30Speaker 4: I want my money back for my season tickets there.
- 28:32Speaker 4: And it proves Wolf and the rest of the current
- 28:35Speaker 4: front office help Belichick screw up the draft for the
- 28:37Speaker 4: last five years.
- 28:38Speaker 7: I wouldn't go that far, but I understand.
- 28:41Speaker 9: I will also cry if they draft him.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Really you're anti.
- 28:46Speaker 8: Yeah, not at three. Not at three.
- 28:50Speaker 9: Now, if we were like the eighteenth pick, maybe, but
- 28:55Speaker 9: not at three.
- 28:56Speaker 4: It's tough.
- 28:57Speaker 7: I think it's tough to look at him and put
- 28:59Speaker 7: him in the same tier as the other guys, which
- 29:01Speaker 7: has been where I've been at it since probably January
- 29:05Speaker 7: or February. With JJ McCarthy, it's just he's not He
- 29:08Speaker 7: doesn't have you know, the it's a projection that he's
- 29:13Speaker 7: going to be able to carry a team.
- 29:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:15Speaker 9: I think that had he not won the National Championship,
- 29:18Speaker 9: we would not be having this conversation right now. I
- 29:20Speaker 9: think he's a clean prospect, Like he doesn't make mistakes,
- 29:23Speaker 9: he's smart, you know, looks the part.
- 29:26Speaker 8: But like he's not dynamic.
- 29:27Speaker 9: He's not as exciting to watch as the other three.
- 29:29Speaker 4: The only thing I could say in rebuttal to that
- 29:31Speaker 4: is he wasn't asked to be dynamic. He didn't need
- 29:33Speaker 4: to be dynamic. He didn't need to put the team
- 29:35Speaker 4: on his shoulders very often and win the game. And
- 29:38Speaker 4: that's not his fault.
- 29:39Speaker 9: Is that Mac Jones' fault? What do you mean, Like
- 29:42Speaker 9: he wasn't ask to do that in college either.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Different offense, mac Jones different.
- 29:46Speaker 7: I would say mac Jones did it more than j
- 29:48Speaker 7: j Yeah, I.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Would say so too. I mean he threw downfield, he
- 29:50Speaker 4: had to really dynamic.
- 29:52Speaker 9: But he never faced anyone good. And like the SEC
- 29:54Speaker 9: wasn't the SEC when Mac was playing in it, like
- 29:57Speaker 9: they blew everybody out, whereas the SEC now like you
- 30:00Speaker 9: actually have to go through Georgia and LSU, like there's
- 30:02Speaker 9: actually conte.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Georgia was pretty good back then.
- 30:04Speaker 6: Now the SEC, but not the Big Ten. Like I
- 30:07Speaker 6: just don't think that McCarthy, I don't look at the
- 30:11Speaker 6: Big Ten is all that different than ACC. I said
- 30:13Speaker 6: this a couple of these two teams at the top.
- 30:15Speaker 6: I think that Ohio State and Michigan have sort of
- 30:18Speaker 6: progressed to the point where they can compete with anybody. YEP,
- 30:22Speaker 6: the rest of the conference kind of stinks. Penn State
- 30:24Speaker 6: is decent, but they can't beat Ohio State or Michigan, right,
- 30:29Speaker 6: And you know, maybe McCarthy is that guy. Maybe he's
- 30:35Speaker 6: going to be one of those guys that he's better
- 30:37Speaker 6: in the pros than he was in college because he's
- 30:40Speaker 6: allowed to do more and he never was allowed. That's
- 30:42Speaker 6: the way that Hardball wanted to play.
- 30:45Speaker 4: But we talk about you know, mostly these guys are
- 30:48Speaker 4: being talked about in the first round because they're all talented.
- 30:51Speaker 4: They all have talent. And Bill has talked about this
- 30:54Speaker 4: before Belichick. You know, you get to the draft and
- 30:57Speaker 4: all the guys have talent, right, you know, But it's
- 31:01Speaker 4: the intangils. Are they coachable? You know? How fast do
- 31:04Speaker 4: they process? You know? What's their attitude toward the game
- 31:07Speaker 4: of football? Do they love it? Is it really important
- 31:09Speaker 4: to them? And it seems that McCarthy really checks all
- 31:13Speaker 4: those boxes.
- 31:14Speaker 7: I wouldn't say he checks the processing box the rest
- 31:16Speaker 7: of them. I think the intangibles are definitely true.
- 31:19Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I don't know, Like I read the
- 31:22Speaker 6: quote about him wanting guys that were interested in winning
- 31:24Speaker 6: and not chasing girls and partying. Okay, so that's an
- 31:27Speaker 6: intangibles box.
- 31:28Speaker 7: The rest of it.
- 31:29Speaker 6: I don't know how you can determine from here if
- 31:33Speaker 6: he's smart, if he like and all these things like
- 31:36Speaker 6: you can. I mean, certainly the teams will have more
- 31:39Speaker 6: intel on that because they're going to have meetings with them,
- 31:42Speaker 6: And Evan talked about some of the stuff about putting
- 31:45Speaker 6: plays on boards and then coming back the next day
- 31:47Speaker 6: and doing things like that. That's like that to me
- 31:53Speaker 6: is stuff that teams can know. But I don't like
- 31:55Speaker 6: I went on a rant about this last week. I
- 31:57Speaker 6: don't know how JJ McCarthy is emerged as quote unquote
- 32:00Speaker 6: the safe prospect.
- 32:02Speaker 7: I don't understand it.
- 32:03Speaker 4: I don't.
- 32:04Speaker 6: I don't know why his bust rate is any less
- 32:06Speaker 6: than Caleb Williams or anybody else.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, if you get just gonna because people
- 32:11Speaker 4: look at what he did in college and they think
- 32:13Speaker 4: that's what he's gonna do in the pros, no more,
- 32:15Speaker 4: but then that more it's gonna be.
- 32:17Speaker 6: That would be a bust. Right, Like, if he plays
- 32:19Speaker 6: the way he did in college and is under center
- 32:21Speaker 6: all the time, he turns around, he hands the ball off, right,
- 32:24Speaker 6: he'll be a bust.
- 32:24Speaker 4: And the team's gonna stay. I mean, more is going
- 32:27Speaker 4: to be asked of him in the pros. There's no
- 32:28Speaker 4: doubt about it. Yeah, can he handle it?
- 32:30Speaker 7: I mean, I just think that's that's what it comes
- 32:32Speaker 7: down to, is can you imagine this guy consistently, not
- 32:36Speaker 7: like the one time Mac Jones beat Josh Allen, but
- 32:39Speaker 7: like consistently go toe to toe with Josh Allen where
- 32:42Speaker 7: you are in a thirty five to thirty game and
- 32:45Speaker 7: you actually have a chance to win the game at
- 32:47Speaker 7: the end of the day against that level of quarterback
- 32:49Speaker 7: and that level of offense. And I just think with
- 32:52Speaker 7: JJ like if he goes to Minnesota, I think he
- 32:55Speaker 7: has a really good chance of succeeding with Minnesota because
- 32:57Speaker 7: they can ask him to do what he did at Michigan.
- 33:00Speaker 7: We're just gonna ask you to get the ball to
- 33:01Speaker 7: Justin Jefferson and make some plays on third down.
- 33:04Speaker 4: I think with the advances in technology AI and VR
- 33:08Speaker 4: and all that, I think there's gonna be a way
- 33:11Speaker 4: within ten years to bring up to bring in a
- 33:15Speaker 4: quarterback prospect and actually put the goggles on them whatever
- 33:19Speaker 4: the tech is, and have them go through a game
- 33:21Speaker 4: and have to process a game in real time, against
- 33:26Speaker 4: real pressure.
- 33:27Speaker 7: They do have stuff like that already. I remember a
- 33:30Speaker 7: couple of years ago the Cardinals were it was a
- 33:32Speaker 7: big thing with the Cardinals. It's it's VR like it's
- 33:35Speaker 7: a VR headset and you wear it and you go
- 33:37Speaker 7: through it. But I just think the problem is that
- 33:39Speaker 7: there's no fear that you're gonna get a hit.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Well that's no. But they'll figure that out too.
- 33:43Speaker 7: Oh oh they actually hit them. Yeah.
- 33:44Speaker 6: Is this like a like an offshoot of your Kicker competition?
- 33:48Speaker 7: I mean I love it.
- 33:49Speaker 6: From like fifteen years ago. I forget when Vinitari left
- 33:54Speaker 6: and we.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Drafted Carcels told him he had the gun to his head.
- 33:58Speaker 6: We were going to have no I think you wanted
- 33:59Speaker 6: to to his throat. Yeah, him and Martine Gramatica.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Yeah I like that.
- 34:03Speaker 7: Yeah yeah.
- 34:04Speaker 6: And we have Oh we have your wife right, you know,
- 34:07Speaker 6: held hostage and if you miss this kick, she's dead.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Yeah. Some way to really test their mental.
- 34:12Speaker 6: This is what I deal with. Yeah, you guys think
- 34:15Speaker 6: I'm just cranky.
- 34:16Speaker 4: This is what Listen. I'm going to invest a lot
- 34:18Speaker 4: in you. You know you're gonna be my the face
- 34:21Speaker 4: of our franchise. We have to make sure that you
- 34:23Speaker 4: can handle this.
- 34:23Speaker 7: That's why you watch the tape. Yeah, that's all you got.
- 34:26Speaker 4: But again, even the tape, it's who's the competition, what
- 34:29Speaker 4: was the situation? Blah blah blah blah.
- 34:32Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess I don't know. I think you can
- 34:34Speaker 7: just I.
- 34:35Speaker 6: Mean, there's a reason why the first round hit rate
- 34:37Speaker 6: is much higher than the second round and the third round,
- 34:40Speaker 6: and like the better.
- 34:42Speaker 7: They get it right right a lot.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Hey Patriots fans, if you want to see Toyota's best offers,

- 35:33Speaker 6: Word Yeah, all right.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Back to the emails web radio at Patriots dot Com,
- 35:39Speaker 4: Christian writes in I just wanted to clear the air.
- 35:41Speaker 4: He says, Oh Paul mentioned last week some of us
- 35:44Speaker 4: had quieted down regarding not wanting May because it looks
- 35:47Speaker 4: like that's who the Patriots may draft. I'm still in
- 35:50Speaker 4: the camp of not wanting May, and we'll much rather
- 35:53Speaker 4: have Daniels or Penix trade down and get some extra
- 35:56Speaker 4: capital from the Vikings, Raiders, etc. If you're able to
- 36:00Speaker 4: possibly fill two holes and still get the quarterback, I'd
- 36:03Speaker 4: like I'd much rather do that than a guy who
- 36:05Speaker 4: I believe won't make it in the NFL. Also mis
- 36:09Speaker 4: my list, Mike. I respect your view. He's not here
- 36:12Speaker 4: on May, but have you watched Jayden play? You said
- 36:15Speaker 4: you don't want college football. I think that will help
- 36:18Speaker 4: you get more in on Jaden if you spent some
- 36:21Speaker 4: time watching the kid play.
- 36:23Speaker 6: Jeez, accusing Mike of not watching this is Those are
- 36:26Speaker 6: my favorites.
- 36:27Speaker 7: Yeah, Like, I know who this is and he's been
- 36:29Speaker 7: on the same train about Drake May. The whole time,
- 36:32Speaker 7: which is fine, but Mike watches plenty of these guys don't.
- 36:35Speaker 7: Don't be taking shots at Mike.
- 36:37Speaker 6: And I like Jayden Daniels more than Mike does. But yeah,
- 36:40Speaker 6: I just like May more. I understand conventional than Yeah Daniels.
- 36:45Speaker 6: I understand all the reasons why Mike doesn't like Jayden Daniels.
- 36:48Speaker 6: I think that Mike is working. I grew up and
- 36:51Speaker 6: away liked his quarterbacks just sit back in the throw
- 36:54Speaker 6: the football.
- 36:55Speaker 7: Yeah, no, he was.
- 36:55Speaker 6: He's a little bit more old school.
- 36:57Speaker 7: I think he's a little bit worried about about him
- 37:00Speaker 7: being a high level passer, which I think is totally valid.
- 37:03Speaker 4: But if you're a guy who needs time, is it
- 37:07Speaker 4: better to be like a Drake May type player or
- 37:10Speaker 4: Jayden Daniels where Jayden and Daniels can always rely on
- 37:12Speaker 4: his legs to get him out of trouble.
- 37:14Speaker 6: So doesn't that hurt his development that he that he
- 37:17Speaker 6: does that?
- 37:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 37:18Speaker 6: Yeah, But because he's not sitting in the pocket processing
- 37:20Speaker 6: and learning, he's i know, for a sign of trouble,
- 37:23Speaker 6: he's tucked tail.
- 37:24Speaker 9: This is giving me like flashbacks if when Lamar Jackson
- 37:27Speaker 9: was getting drafted and how everyone kind of doubted him
- 37:31Speaker 9: and like what he was going to be able to
- 37:32Speaker 9: do in the NFL because he did use his legs
- 37:34Speaker 9: so much.
- 37:35Speaker 7: Yeah, they're very different players and stylistically, I would say,
- 37:40Speaker 7: but I agree that the impact they have on the
- 37:43Speaker 7: game is very similar because of their mobility. Like you're defensively,
- 37:47Speaker 7: I think the game plan, even though they run differently
- 37:49Speaker 7: and they throw differently and all that, it's not conceptually
- 37:53Speaker 7: it's not going to be very different. Like you're gonna
- 37:55Speaker 7: have to keep that guy in the pocket, You're gonna
- 37:57Speaker 7: have to have spies, You're gonna have to have you know,
- 37:59Speaker 7: zone coverages with all eyes on the quarterback. You're gonna
- 38:02Speaker 7: have to scheme up a way to stop a designed
- 38:05Speaker 7: quarterback or on game like those those runs are going
- 38:07Speaker 7: to be in the game plan every single week. If
- 38:09Speaker 7: you're the Patriots and you have Jayden Daniels, those things
- 38:11Speaker 7: are really attractive for any team. I think the biggest
- 38:15Speaker 7: thing with him that he just needs to work on
- 38:18Speaker 7: is you know, having that ability to process the middle
- 38:21Speaker 7: of the field and take those throws that are available
- 38:23Speaker 7: to him in those areas. And I would also say
- 38:26Speaker 7: he's not a off script thrower. He's not a guy
- 38:29Speaker 7: that's going to get outside the pocket with his legs
- 38:31Speaker 7: and keep his eyes downfield and make throws off platform.
- 38:34Speaker 7: I think that's the biggest difference to me between Lamar
- 38:37Speaker 7: and Jaden is Lamar is willing to take those throws
- 38:41Speaker 7: when he gets off I think. I think that's exactly
- 38:47Speaker 7: what he is. And I'll say, you know, I love
- 38:49Speaker 7: Lamar Jackson. He's one of my favorite players in the
- 38:51Speaker 7: league to watch.
- 38:53Speaker 6: But I'll tell you that I hear from a lot
- 38:55Speaker 6: of fans that to this day tell me how he's
- 38:57Speaker 6: not that good, he's overrated. He's he's a running back
- 39:01Speaker 6: playing quarterback. He's gonna win m vps, but you're not
- 39:04Speaker 6: ever gonna win anything with him. So there is still
- 39:09Speaker 6: like this element of people that they don't want their
- 39:12Speaker 6: quarterback to be a runner. They want him to be
- 39:14Speaker 6: a passer who can run like Mahomes.
- 39:17Speaker 7: I think Lamar and Jaden Daniels are different though, Like Lamar,
- 39:22Speaker 7: Lamar peppers the middle of the field like that's that's
- 39:26Speaker 7: where he lives, seems.
- 39:30Speaker 6: But think back to when Lamar came into the league
- 39:33Speaker 6: that first year, he was overmatched. He just made plays
- 39:37Speaker 6: with his.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Legs when he played the Patriots. That was first year
- 39:41Speaker 4: because they killed us that game.
- 39:43Speaker 6: Right, That wasn't his first year. That was the second
- 39:45Speaker 6: year when he won m v P. But when he
- 39:47Speaker 6: first came into the league, he they won some games
- 39:50Speaker 6: and they ended up making the playoffs because he relieved
- 39:53Speaker 6: Joe Flacco that year and took took the job for good.
- 39:56Speaker 6: But I remember he was completely overwhelmed by a very
- 40:01Speaker 6: bad San Diego Chargers defense in the first round of
- 40:04Speaker 6: the playoffs because he had no ability to beat you
- 40:06Speaker 6: from the pocket. He wanted to run all the time.
- 40:09Speaker 6: The Chargers, if you remember this you like to make
- 40:12Speaker 6: fun of me, used all those like defensive backs as linebackers,
- 40:17Speaker 6: Adrian Phillips, and they kept Lamar Jackson from running to
- 40:20Speaker 6: beat them, and they dominated that game. That same Chargers
- 40:24Speaker 6: defense tried to come to Foxborough the following week and
- 40:26Speaker 6: do the same thing and gave up forty one points
- 40:28Speaker 6: or something like that in the divisional round to the Patriots.
- 40:33Speaker 6: So I think there's a lot of people that I
- 40:36Speaker 6: love Lamar Jackson. I think he's dynamic. I think he
- 40:39Speaker 6: throws certainly well enough that you can win with him,
- 40:43Speaker 6: But he hasn't won big. He hasn't won in the
- 40:45Speaker 6: playoffs when it counts Now, I've taken a lot better
- 40:48Speaker 6: as a thrower, oh by leaps and bounds. And if
- 40:50Speaker 6: Jayden Daniels has that kind of a track, you're gonna
- 40:53Speaker 6: talk about him the same way because he can run.
- 40:55Speaker 7: Yeah. I think the biggest the advantage that Jayden Daniels
- 40:58Speaker 7: has is that he's a much more canically sound thrower
- 41:01Speaker 7: coming coming into the league. I agree, much smoother throwing delivery,
- 41:04Speaker 7: and much more efficient in the pocket with his feet.
- 41:07Speaker 7: Lamar Jackson had some true mechanical things that needed to
- 41:10Speaker 7: be work out, you know, footwork. You kind of had
- 41:12Speaker 7: like a shot put release coming out. It wasn't really
- 41:14Speaker 7: like a smooth, you know, typical release. Jandon Daniels looks
- 41:18Speaker 7: the part throwing the ball that you would think of
- 41:20Speaker 7: a prototypical quarterback.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Diana from New Hampshire getting excited about the draft. First
- 41:26Speaker 4: of all, so grateful for your insight and entertainment every
- 41:29Speaker 4: week as I look forward to watching you Tuesday and Thursday.
- 41:32Speaker 4: Do you think there's a possibility the Patriots could make
- 41:35Speaker 4: a trade during the draft for either Ayuk or Higgins.
- 41:39Speaker 4: What would be the cost of the trade, required to
- 41:42Speaker 4: get either of them. What do you think?
- 41:45Speaker 7: Probably the second round pick up?
- 41:47Speaker 4: So as erased all forty nine ers from his timeline,
- 41:52Speaker 4: Is that true? Yeah? I mean guys have done that.
- 41:54Speaker 7: He doesn't follow the forty nine ers anymore.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Yeah, okay on like Instagram and stuff.
- 41:58Speaker 7: Very very hurt.
- 41:59Speaker 4: Yeah, he's his hit feelings hurt.
- 42:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 42:02Speaker 4: See what would you give for Ayuk? Thirty four? You
- 42:06Speaker 4: wouldn't give a first round? No?
- 42:09Speaker 6: No, no, I mean no, because only because of the
- 42:12Speaker 6: situation they ran.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, what I give first round? You might as
- 42:16Speaker 4: well take Marvin Harrison.
- 42:17Speaker 7: Well you're not very God, you're not giving three, Like
- 42:20Speaker 7: that's not even part of the conversation. I think thirty
- 42:22Speaker 7: four this year and then maybe a pick from next
- 42:24Speaker 7: year's draft on Day two or Day three, like a
- 42:27Speaker 7: third or fourth rounder from next year. Like maybe I
- 42:30Speaker 7: would do that and that would get it done. I mean,
- 42:32Speaker 7: I Youk's a great player and it would be a
- 42:34Speaker 7: great fit here, so I would. I would definitely entertain it.
- 42:37Speaker 7: But no, you're not you're not giving you can't as
- 42:40Speaker 7: the Patriots be giving up first round picks right now
- 42:43Speaker 7: for for guys like Ayuk.
- 42:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it's justin Jefferson.
- 42:47Speaker 6: And you don't have a quarterback. Like if you had
- 42:49Speaker 6: a quarterback, then you can make a trade like that.
- 42:53Speaker 6: But I don't see how you can up your first
- 42:55Speaker 6: round pick and to acquire or this is like taking
- 42:57Speaker 6: Marvin Harrison at three right.
- 43:00Speaker 7: At more expensive and old.
- 43:01Speaker 4: What's the issue with him? He wants more money a you.
- 43:04Speaker 7: Yeah, he's he's coming up on the contract. I think
- 43:08Speaker 7: he was a first round pick, so he probably has
- 43:10Speaker 7: the fifth year option. I think this is year four,
- 43:12Speaker 7: and then he has the fifth year option on top
- 43:14Speaker 7: of that. So he's not a true free agent yet
- 43:17Speaker 7: and you know, and for the next couple of years.
- 43:19Speaker 7: But he needs to be paid.
- 43:21Speaker 4: Any chance instead they pay him and get rid of
- 43:24Speaker 4: Deebo Samuel and we get him.
- 43:26Speaker 6: That could So let's we could talk about that a
- 43:28Speaker 6: little bit because that's one of my pet peeves is, Oh,
- 43:31Speaker 6: look at the free agent class is going to be
- 43:32Speaker 6: huge next year because all those guys, It's Jefferson, Chase,
- 43:36Speaker 6: Jalen Wattle, CD Lamb, there's.
- 43:38Speaker 4: A lot of by the way, he's pissed off.
- 43:41Speaker 6: Right, So there's a lot of big time receivers that
- 43:44Speaker 6: are going to be due money. Like you saw with
- 43:47Speaker 6: DeVante Smith. You know, cross one off the list. Then,
- 43:49Speaker 6: like the great players like that will generally get re signed.
- 43:54Speaker 6: And if they don't, if this turns out to be
- 43:56Speaker 6: a thing with Ayuk and he has to get dealt,
- 43:58Speaker 6: it's gonna cost you a lot. Yeah, Like when AJ
- 44:00Speaker 6: Brown went from Tennessee to Philly. It's a high pick
- 44:04Speaker 6: and a big money contract. Now a guy to keep
- 44:07Speaker 6: mind Now is aj Brown not this year because his
- 44:10Speaker 6: contract is very affordable. But after the twenty four season
- 44:15Speaker 6: there's an out for them. And you know, heading into
- 44:17Speaker 6: the twenty five season, his numbers is and when I
- 44:20Speaker 6: say numbers, his base salary skyrockets. So that's a guy
- 44:24Speaker 6: to keep him keep an eye on. Down the road.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Ryan and Connecticut. Here's a little game for the crew
- 44:30Speaker 4: to play involving only the realistic draft prospects in May Daniels, McCarthy,
- 44:35Speaker 4: and Pennix. If you could only pick one restaurant to
- 44:38Speaker 4: bring them to, which would it be? So you're in Boston,
- 44:44Speaker 4: let's assume that's separate, but you're going to bring them
- 44:46Speaker 4: all to the same restaurant in separate times. What would
- 44:48Speaker 4: the restaurant be that you'd want to host these guys.
- 44:51Speaker 7: At and you're in Boston, not Foxborough, be anywhere in
- 44:55Speaker 7: this area. Well, I just tell you know Foxborough, Like,
- 44:57Speaker 7: if you were here, it's Davio's.
- 44:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:00Speaker 6: But if you're in Boston, I would go to the
- 45:01Speaker 6: North End.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Yeah, bring him to the North End.
- 45:03Speaker 7: Yeah, yep, I would take them to Mother Annas in
- 45:06Speaker 7: the North End.
- 45:06Speaker 4: Okay, there you go. There's a straight answer.
- 45:08Speaker 7: But really, what.
- 45:12Speaker 4: These are weird questions? So that's one thing.
- 45:14Speaker 7: I think d they took drink made it gains Steaks,
- 45:17Speaker 7: which it could be Davio's still, so I don't know
- 45:19Speaker 7: what that necessarily means, but that's what Schrager said today.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Where do you think the Patriots took them? I don't
- 45:26Speaker 4: know where they took them. What is the green flag
- 45:30Speaker 4: drink and red flag drink for a prospect to order
- 45:33Speaker 4: at dinner?
- 45:35Speaker 8: Green flag water?
- 45:37Speaker 4: That's that's a green flag? Yeah, what's red flag? Like
- 45:41Speaker 4: a like a like a Long Island iced tea Long
- 45:44Speaker 4: Island ice double.
- 45:46Speaker 7: Yeah, if you order and it seems like that's not
- 45:48Speaker 7: your first.
- 45:49Speaker 4: No Long Island iced tease, okay, knowing the next day
- 45:53Speaker 4: is a workout. What is the green flag dinner and
- 45:56Speaker 4: red flag dinner. So he's got to work out next day.
- 46:01Speaker 6: So we're operating on the assumption he's working out. Yeah,
- 46:04Speaker 6: you probably want to go a little lighter.
- 46:06Speaker 8: Then, right, Maybe a salmon.
- 46:07Speaker 4: Yeah, you're in New England, you know little, you're open
- 46:12Speaker 4: to new things. You should order fish, clam chowder, yeah,
- 46:16Speaker 4: some type of seafood.
- 46:18Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the guy that.
- 46:22Speaker 6: I heard a story like within the last week, some
- 46:25Speaker 6: someone was out on a draft visit like that and
- 46:28Speaker 6: they got them and they took him out and they
- 46:30Speaker 6: ordered a steak and he didn't order anything.
- 46:34Speaker 7: That was a story. Yeah, who was Like who was
- 46:38Speaker 7: the guy?
- 46:38Speaker 6: Like he wouldn't say oh okay, so interesting. He had
- 46:41Speaker 6: another meeting set up, right, Yeah, he was going on
- 46:44Speaker 6: a bunch of other dinner was going right from that
- 46:45Speaker 6: one to another one.
- 46:46Speaker 7: So you don't want to spoilless episode.
- 46:48Speaker 4: You ordered dinner at the last one that was before
- 46:50Speaker 4: a pro day, all right, So May Daniels, McCarthy and
- 46:53Speaker 4: panics give each a sign, each one a drink.
- 46:57Speaker 7: Oh h.
- 47:01Speaker 4: May is moonshine. I don't know, Yeah, I don't know.
- 47:07Speaker 6: I don't know. Yeah, and I'm not I'm not poo
- 47:11Speaker 6: pooling the silly question.
- 47:12Speaker 4: I love wine McCarthy's milk.
- 47:15Speaker 7: I just don't know.
- 47:16Speaker 8: What Pennis wine because it's from Washington. Okay, he's older.
- 47:20Speaker 7: Okay is Jaden Daniels So is a California So I
- 47:27Speaker 7: would say, like, you know, like you know, Minnesota Gin
- 47:31Speaker 7: and Tonic or something like that, like something you get
- 47:33Speaker 7: at a club in l A.
- 47:34Speaker 6: You know, May would just Miller Light, diet Miller.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Okay, what is a running quarterback? Order something with caffeine?
- 47:45Speaker 7: Red Bull?
- 47:46Speaker 4: Red Bull? And if you were the prospect, what drink
- 47:51Speaker 4: would you get?
- 47:52Speaker 7: Life?
- 47:53Speaker 4: Life?
- 47:55Speaker 7: I feel like it is a little bit of a test,
- 47:57Speaker 7: isn't it?
- 47:57Speaker 6: Like you know, I would think everything you don't want.
- 48:00Speaker 6: I would think of everything as a test.
- 48:03Speaker 7: You don't want to order. I think a water is
- 48:05Speaker 7: like trying too hard.
- 48:07Speaker 4: No.
- 48:07Speaker 7: I think a water is like they're gonna look at
- 48:09Speaker 7: that and be like, you know, you can't even lose
- 48:12Speaker 7: a little bit and have some fun, like you know.
- 48:15Speaker 8: Then I would do wine wine safe.
- 48:18Speaker 7: I think beer is the safest. You can't get mad
- 48:22Speaker 7: at a dude for ordering a beer.
- 48:23Speaker 8: You can't get mad at.
- 48:25Speaker 7: No matter what you think of the guy, if he
- 48:27Speaker 7: orders a beer like that's a dude's drink, Like, you're
- 48:30Speaker 7: not gonna there's no judgment for ordering a beer.
- 48:33Speaker 4: So if you were sitting with the Prospect and all
- 48:35Speaker 4: of a sudden, you know, hey, Evan, you know, what
- 48:38Speaker 4: do you want to drink? And he says, you know,
- 48:41Speaker 4: let me see the wine list. I'm out, And he
- 48:44Speaker 4: was like, you know, I'll have the two thousand and eight.
- 48:50Speaker 7: It's sophisticated and I like wine, but I'm not I'm
- 48:52Speaker 7: not trying to be a quarterback in the NFL.
- 48:54Speaker 6: He knows, he knows, he knows wine. So that means
- 48:57Speaker 6: he just doesn't know how to read defenses.
- 48:59Speaker 4: No, it's just you out because of that, because like that,
- 49:02Speaker 4: that's just maybe he has interests other than you know. No, no, no,
- 49:05Speaker 4: you wouldn't like that.
- 49:07Speaker 7: I want my quarterback to be like a dude's dude,
- 49:10Speaker 7: like you know, I want him to you know, that's
- 49:12Speaker 7: what I want.
- 49:13Speaker 9: Like he's also coming from someone who's obsessed with Josh Allen.
- 49:16Speaker 7: He wants some toughness, you know, you want some some
- 49:19Speaker 7: some bravado. No, no, if he starts taking the wineless,
- 49:24Speaker 7: I'll have a you know, a cabernet.
- 49:26Speaker 4: So he says, No, I'll have a Jack Daniels and
- 49:29Speaker 4: leave the bottle. That would impress you.
- 49:31Speaker 10: Absolutely, we're talking. Just just give me their straight jack. Yeah, yes,
- 49:39Speaker 10: I mean if you want an alcoholic is what you know?
- 49:41Speaker 10: I just want a guy that can hold his own.
- 49:43Speaker 10: Like you look, look at Tom Brady. There's all sorts
- 49:46Speaker 10: of stories about how much, you know, how he could
- 49:49Speaker 10: put him back, or how he could chug you know,
- 49:53Speaker 10: beers and things like that.
- 49:54Speaker 6: Yeah, but did you the story about how he would
- 49:57Speaker 6: mix Iteah?
- 49:58Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 49:58Speaker 7: Yeah, because he was competing with three than thirty pound people.
- 50:01Speaker 6: He's cheatings, he was cheating. Well, he had to little foreshadowing. Yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 6: what he's not on the Patriots anymore, we can be
- 50:09Speaker 6: on the Patriots.
- 50:10Speaker 4: Yeah, he's coming back. Alex and Inglewood.
- 50:13Speaker 7: Can we touch on that too later?
- 50:14Speaker 4: Maybe? Yeah?
- 50:15Speaker 6: Would you want that?
- 50:16Speaker 4: No, neither would I.
- 50:18Speaker 6: Nothing against Brady either, but I just think like, let's
- 50:22Speaker 6: do that. We're gonna do this, let's just do it.
- 50:24Speaker 6: We've moved on rebuild. Yeah, yep, I touched on it.
- 50:28Speaker 6: He was just kidding he wouldn't come back. I kind
- 50:30Speaker 6: of think it was more of that too, But I'm
- 50:34Speaker 6: I heard them talking on your station.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Which station is my station?
- 50:37Speaker 6: Your boy with Barthy in Serrill and they were like
- 50:42Speaker 6: legitimately like breaking it down. I'm like, are you guys serious?
- 50:45Speaker 4: Ten games? Why would you want Flora's ten games? Ten
- 50:47Speaker 4: games they're gonna win. I've heard the oh big deal.
- 50:50Speaker 7: You draft Drake May and then he sits behind Brady
- 50:53Speaker 7: for a year and Brady, you know, tutors him and
- 50:55Speaker 7: behind the scenes.
- 50:56Speaker 4: And Brady's not interested in tutoring anybody.
- 50:58Speaker 6: And Brady's not interested in playing for the Patriots. If
- 51:01Speaker 6: you're using the third pick on a quarterback and not
- 51:04Speaker 6: Marvin Harrison.
- 51:05Speaker 7: I'm not disagreeing with it that that's the logical way.
- 51:07Speaker 7: But I got asked that. I was on with the
- 51:09Speaker 7: Newman Football Journal guys last night on their podcast Tony
- 51:13Speaker 7: and and John, and how did you get.
- 51:15Speaker 4: On that show? They asked me to come on, man,
- 51:17Speaker 4: it's a tough, tough get. It's tough to get on
- 51:19Speaker 4: that show.
- 51:20Speaker 7: You're a bad person, they just asked me.
- 51:23Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 51:24Speaker 6: They're so good.
- 51:25Speaker 7: I know they work so hard.
- 51:27Speaker 4: I know I know I know that I've known them
- 51:31Speaker 4: a long time. The great guys.
- 51:33Speaker 7: Kevin asked me the straight face if if Brady would
- 51:35Speaker 7: come back, and if I would want him back, Like,
- 51:38Speaker 7: it's an honest question that people have.
- 51:39Speaker 6: I think people have entertained it. I was listening to
- 51:42Speaker 6: Beatle and Phil Perry, and Beatle was making fun of
- 51:45Speaker 6: Phil because you wouldn't entertain it last week evidently, And
- 51:48Speaker 6: it's still like, it.
- 51:50Speaker 7: Was kind of nice that he did say the Patriots though.
- 51:52Speaker 4: That was nice.
- 51:54Speaker 6: Yeah, he threw that out there for everybody, Like it
- 51:56Speaker 6: wasn't just you know, yeah, because the other guy was like.
- 52:00Speaker 7: Raiders, Dolphins, you know, all the other teams. He's been rumored.
- 52:03Speaker 6: Raiders, I think, yeah, and he put the Patriots on.
- 52:06Speaker 4: I just don't it's the Raiders owner ownership think gone through.
- 52:09Speaker 6: It's not resolved.
- 52:10Speaker 4: Yeah, mister Kraft, if you're listening, give him a piece
- 52:15Speaker 4: of this team. Let him be part owner of this team.
- 52:17Speaker 4: He should not be affiliated with any other team besides
- 52:20Speaker 4: this team.
- 52:21Speaker 6: So that's so I think part of the thing is,
- 52:25Speaker 6: like they will, They're looking to give him a piece
- 52:27Speaker 6: of the team for a fraction of what I know.
- 52:28Speaker 4: And that's why, no, no, make it fair. It's got
- 52:31Speaker 4: to be make it of value, you know.
- 52:34Speaker 6: But I don't think that Tom is necessarily interested in
- 52:37Speaker 6: other opportunities because I think not because of Vegas specifically,
- 52:41Speaker 6: although that's part of it. I think Davis was given
- 52:44Speaker 6: him an unbelievable deal, like he was getting like let's
- 52:48Speaker 6: just just use round him. He's getting a billion dollars
- 52:50Speaker 6: worth of the team for like a million, Like that's
- 52:53Speaker 6: like how often was right?
- 52:54Speaker 4: But in this case, I would say to whatever the
- 52:58Speaker 4: percentage is here, it is you to pay us. You
- 53:01Speaker 4: own it, but if you ever want to cash in,
- 53:04Speaker 4: here's the amount that we have to get back, you know,
- 53:08Speaker 4: so like you can't just sell it and make the money.
- 53:10Speaker 4: If you sell it, we get the money, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 4: because we're not asking you to pay.
- 53:14Speaker 6: For sell in your house before it's you know, paid for.
- 53:16Speaker 4: Yeah, something like that, you know. But he should be part.
- 53:19Speaker 4: He should have equity in the Patriots. I think if.
- 53:22Speaker 7: He's gonna have equity in any because I don't think.
- 53:24Speaker 4: He's got three hundred million dollars in cash lab Maybe
- 53:27Speaker 4: he does, but you know he's not. He doesn't want
- 53:29Speaker 4: to outlay that amount of money.
- 53:31Speaker 6: I think that's probably a safe bet, right, although he
- 53:34Speaker 6: does have a contract worth three hundred and something million
- 53:37Speaker 6: from five yeah, I know.
- 53:38Speaker 4: But over how many years?
- 53:40Speaker 7: Ten years? Right?
- 53:42Speaker 4: So Alex and Inglewood. First off, I want to say
- 53:44Speaker 4: I enjoy the show. Nothing gets rid of my morning
- 53:46Speaker 4: anxiety like hearing Paul's voice and I mean it.
- 53:48Speaker 7: Wow.
- 53:49Speaker 6: So then that's stunning.
- 53:51Speaker 4: My question at this point in the draft process, do
- 53:53Speaker 4: you think the decision makers, Elliott Wolf and maybe Mayo
- 53:56Speaker 4: know who they want to take in the draft. I'm
- 53:58Speaker 4: sure they have contingency plans for any scenario, but will
- 54:01Speaker 4: they go off a big board or could it be
- 54:04Speaker 4: a draft day situation where Elliott Wolf has Drake may
- 54:08Speaker 4: no matter what written on a piece of paper like
- 54:10Speaker 4: the movie. Yeah.
- 54:14Speaker 7: I think they have a pretty good idea.
- 54:15Speaker 4: They know who they want to take, they know why,
- 54:17Speaker 4: and they have contingency plans. Yeah.
- 54:19Speaker 7: Well I talked to him on Thursday. Maybe we can
- 54:21Speaker 7: get it out of them.
- 54:22Speaker 6: Michael don't want to know, right, Yeah, the Michael Pennick.
- 54:26Speaker 4: Why do you want to know?
- 54:27Speaker 7: What are you going to do with that so I
- 54:28Speaker 7: can know ahead of time?
- 54:29Speaker 4: Yeah? We don't. We don't want to know what.
- 54:33Speaker 6: Wait wait, why wouldn't I mean I understand like competitively
- 54:36Speaker 6: and all that, but why wouldn't you personally want to know.
- 54:39Speaker 4: First of all, because if they're telling me, then I
- 54:43Speaker 4: question them.
- 54:43Speaker 6: Oh okay, So it's just a competitive thing. It's not
- 54:46Speaker 6: that you don't want. Like if we were if you
- 54:48Speaker 6: were off the air and like walked out of the
- 54:51Speaker 6: studio and Gerard was right there and he said, oh,
- 54:53Speaker 6: by the way, just so you guys know, we're taking
- 54:55Speaker 6: Drake May.
- 54:55Speaker 7: That wouldn't bother you.
- 54:56Speaker 4: Yea, that would Oh, it wouldn't bother you. Yeah, I'd
- 54:59Speaker 4: be like, why are you even saying that?
- 55:01Speaker 6: Because I know you won't tell anybody, right, I know
- 55:03Speaker 6: You've been here for thirty years.
- 55:04Speaker 4: I know the organization.
- 55:05Speaker 6: I just I just I know it's in the vault.
- 55:07Speaker 4: I don't want that.
- 55:09Speaker 7: You don't want that pressure.
- 55:11Speaker 4: Yeah, Plus you don't know.
- 55:12Speaker 6: I would love to know what.
- 55:12Speaker 4: Plus you don't know that you've taken Drake May because
- 55:15Speaker 4: maybe the commanders take Drake May. So you don't know that.
- 55:18Speaker 7: Maybe they've already talked to Washington and they all have
- 55:21Speaker 7: sorted out.
- 55:22Speaker 4: Plus it will spoil it for me.
- 55:24Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I'm good with that.
- 55:26Speaker 4: I don't want the Knights spoil it.
- 55:27Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 55:28Speaker 7: I think the biggest for me, it's just from a
- 55:30Speaker 7: work like content perspective to have a leg up and
- 55:32Speaker 7: knowing who they're gonna take, so you have everything already
- 55:35Speaker 7: ready to go. It's easy.
- 55:36Speaker 6: What else are we going to write?
- 55:37Speaker 4: I don't think the twenty minutes are gonna kill you.
- 55:39Speaker 6: I mean, you've written like exhaustive film.
- 55:41Speaker 7: I know, but I'm saying, you know, one of the
- 55:44Speaker 7: things about the draft that does give me anxiety is like, Okay,
- 55:46Speaker 7: they're on the clock, Like you know, there's seventeen million
- 55:50Speaker 7: names that could take to anybody, and then all of
- 55:51Speaker 7: a sudden we see the name and then it's like
- 55:53Speaker 7: the whole thing just comes kind of comes.
- 55:55Speaker 6: For twenty years, I've had that same feeling when we're
- 55:58Speaker 6: doing our show. Then they picked someone and I'm.
- 56:01Speaker 7: Like, there's a million things to do.
- 56:05Speaker 6: I should be writing. I should be doing this, I
- 56:07Speaker 6: should be doing something. We should be talking, you know,
- 56:09Speaker 6: we should be doing a like you'd never feel like
- 56:12Speaker 6: you're prepared. Yep, that's why I'm just going to delegate
- 56:16Speaker 6: speaking of not being prepared.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Uh Rick and Dallas writes in since it's the off season,
- 56:22Speaker 4: I'm sure you are all sick of constantly talking about
- 56:25Speaker 4: Drake May and Jayden Daniels. I figured i'd ask a
- 56:27Speaker 4: fun question. Fun My favorite draft moment in recent history
- 56:31Speaker 4: was evans classic reaction to the cold strange pick. The
- 56:34Speaker 4: way he transitioned perfectly from bewildered rage to barely held together.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Professionalism should be taught at journalism school. So what is
- 56:42Speaker 4: everyone's best, worst, most confused draft moment from the past
- 56:46Speaker 4: five to ten years? And why does it even have
- 56:49Speaker 4: to be a Patriots pick best worst, most confused.
- 56:53Speaker 7: Well, I'll go first because my worst is right out
- 56:56Speaker 7: there on the internet for everybody to see. So be
- 56:59Speaker 7: cold Straan in twenty twenty two.
- 57:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I think. I think the day that Andy and
- 57:04Speaker 4: I got into the argument about rivers and tides, well that.
- 57:07Speaker 7: Was that was great.
- 57:08Speaker 6: Yeah for me, it's Mac. Yeah, I didn't want Mac.
- 57:12Speaker 6: I didn't think they were going to take Mac. Then
- 57:14Speaker 6: they took him, and I'm like, like the reality said,
- 57:17Speaker 6: it is like I worked for the team and they
- 57:20Speaker 6: just took a guy that I really don't.
- 57:22Speaker 7: Think is very right.
- 57:23Speaker 6: So now I'm in out of position and he plays quarterback.
- 57:25Speaker 7: Yeah, so I figured that was going to make my
- 57:27Speaker 7: life different. That's how I feel about JJ. I feel
- 57:30Speaker 7: like and maybe why part of the reason why I'm
- 57:32Speaker 7: so anti JJ is because if they take him, and
- 57:35Speaker 7: then I had like, I'm not spinning it, and like
- 57:37Speaker 7: we don't want to be you know.
- 57:40Speaker 4: That said, I think in your breakdown, you did breakdowns
- 57:42Speaker 4: of all the quarterbacks, but your breakdown of McCarthy was
- 57:45Speaker 4: even handed. I don't think you were overly negative or
- 57:48Speaker 4: anything like that.
- 57:49Speaker 6: Not the JJ people didn't feel that way, and I
- 57:52Speaker 6: would just say, like, don't mistake me saying, look, I
- 57:55Speaker 6: work for the team, so that means I have to
- 57:57Speaker 6: change my opinion on it. No, I never changed my
- 57:59Speaker 6: opinion on Mac based on anything I saw.
- 58:02Speaker 7: Now.
- 58:03Speaker 6: What I was thinking was, it's gonna be hard to
- 58:07Speaker 6: embrace this until he plays, like I don't really feel
- 58:12Speaker 6: like I did. But once once training camp came now,
- 58:17Speaker 6: I said he was the better of the two guys,
- 58:20Speaker 6: you know, when we were doing the show. As we
- 58:21Speaker 6: were watching, he was better than Camp in training camp.
- 58:24Speaker 6: And I said, as long as they're at worst, they're even,
- 58:28Speaker 6: And as long as that's the case, why wouldn't you
- 58:29Speaker 6: play the rookie?
- 58:31Speaker 7: You know?
- 58:31Speaker 6: But that's sort of stuck in my head, like I
- 58:35Speaker 6: don't really believe in this guy, and he's the quarterback.
- 58:38Speaker 7: It's hard to fake that. I think the last the
- 58:41Speaker 7: Mac lesson that I learned from that perspective is just
- 58:44Speaker 7: to trust your gut. Because I was not a big
- 58:47Speaker 7: Mac guy going into the draft. Honestly, I had him
- 58:50Speaker 7: as the fifth quarterback of the draft. Clearly I thought
- 58:53Speaker 7: he was like an NFL starter. Was his ceiling, you know,
- 58:56Speaker 7: just an average run of the mill NFL starter. They
- 58:59Speaker 7: draft him and all all of a sudden, I'm bye
- 59:02Speaker 7: bought it. Like I thought, all right, this guy's going
- 59:04Speaker 7: to be you know, they see something I Bill see
- 59:06Speaker 7: something that I don't like. It's Bill Belichick making the pick.
- 59:08Speaker 7: Like you have to think if he's going to invest
- 59:10Speaker 7: a first round pick in a quarterback who's getting drafted
- 59:13Speaker 7: from the school that his best friend is, you know,
- 59:15Speaker 7: the coach at they must know something about Mac that
- 59:18Speaker 7: I don't know. And so I I took the cheese.
- 59:23Speaker 4: So my my probably my favorite draft moment for us
- 59:27Speaker 4: was and you'll remember this Paul old timer back in
- 59:31Speaker 4: ninety seven when they traded Drew Bledsoe and we were
- 59:34Speaker 4: allowed to break the news on Day two of the draft.
- 59:37Speaker 7: And that was two thousand and two.
- 59:38Speaker 4: Oh I mean two thousand and two.
- 59:40Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, that was that was big for us. That's
- 59:46Speaker 7: a good that's a good memory. Yeah.
- 59:48Speaker 6: We did just like Fred said, we we broke that news.
- 59:52Speaker 4: People were pissed.
- 59:53Speaker 7: Oh yeah, yeah, people were pissed. Good stuff with their
- 59:57Speaker 7: own website.
- 59:58Speaker 4: That's not fair. Yeah, no, literally, Patriots dot com broke
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: that news. Interesting that Bledsoe is going to be trade.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: Ever broke another story.
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: I have no good stories to report from the draft
- 1:00:11Speaker 9: since I've been here.
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: I would say last year was good. I loved last year.
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: I mean it was the first time that I did
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: the draft party and was, you know, here to work
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: here for that, and then they picked the guy I wanted.
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: So it's hard like I would go to the ones
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: that we hit, like Ty Warren was one that we had,
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: Chandler Jones was one that we had, Brandon Merriweather was
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: one that we had. So when they when they took
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: guys that we were saying what we were mocking to
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: the Patriots.
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: And I know.
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: Everybody says that no one ever gets them right, Like, no,
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: sometimes you get them right. Sometimes you do, And those
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: are the ones that stand out for me.
- 1:00:48Speaker 7: It is more positive.
- 1:00:49Speaker 9: I'll never forget when Cole Strange was picked. That room
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: was probably one of the most uncomfortable rooms I've been,
- 1:00:56Speaker 9: Like you could hear a pen drop in there. Yeah,
- 1:00:58Speaker 9: one when they traded back everyone, but then two when
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: they picked him. It was crazy, especially because I think
- 1:01:04Speaker 9: someone called him was like it was disbelief if they
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: picked so and so, like I'm jumping off a bridge.
- 1:01:09Speaker 8: I think that was the same draft party.
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: I was like, this is and you know, poor Cold Strange.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: You know, he's the he's like the example of the
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: overreach in recent years for the Patriots, and it's not
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: his fault, you know, but like, man, was that an overreach?
- 1:01:25Speaker 7: Frankly, the whole draft, that whole classes they draft, they
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: overdrafted every single player in that draft by like a
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: round or two. Yeah, Cold Strange, Taekwon. I think Marcus
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: Jones is probably the only guy and he's the best player,
- 1:01:36Speaker 7: And that was the only pick that I liked.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: Yeah, And the thing about it, you know, other than Bill,
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: it's all the same people here, so like it'd be
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: really interesting with the you know, the truth serum. Yeah,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: like who's picks worthy?
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Onse?
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: You know, well, I think it was a lot Bill
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: ninety five percent Bill, and then I think Mac.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: I still believe the cold Strange pick is because of
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: his ties to Tennessee. Bill he wanted to have He
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: wanted to be able to say, I'm from Tennis, I
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: was born in Tennessee, and I picked a Tennessee player.
- 1:02:06Speaker 9: Okay, but why not pick one from like Tennessee. Yeah,
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: like Tennessee in the not a school, Give.
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: Me a Memphis.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: He probably met the head coach at one time at
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: Chattanooga and he really complimentated Bill up and down, and
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: he wanted to give him a solid.
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: Rule.
- 1:02:22Speaker 9: You can give him a solid by having him come
- 1:02:24Speaker 9: in as an undrafted free agent, but not as your.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: First round pick.
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: I think that Bill has the final say. But I
- 1:02:32Speaker 6: do think that the whole collaborative part, like they're putting
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: like boards together and Bill's the one that's identifying. I
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: don't think that they had Cole Strange as a fifth
- 1:02:42Speaker 6: round pick. Everybody else in that room and Bill just
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: went rogue and said we're going to take him in
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: the first round. I think they thought higher of him
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: than everybody else.
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I believe that. I think that they probably had
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: like a second round grade at that point in the
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: draft twenty eight is probably going to be a guy
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: that you graded out as a second rounder, because you
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: don't you have maybe fifteen to eighteen first round grades
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: in a good draft class. So I can believe that
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: they probably thought cold Strange was with that pick. But
- 1:03:09Speaker 7: it was just the combination of the position he plays
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: and the fact that they reached on a guard in
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: the first round was just a very bad combination.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: A little draft scenario game, would you rather this? Three scenarios?
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: The first one, would you rather take May eighty, Mitchell
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: and then Patrick Paul? That's your first group. The second
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: group is Jaden Daniels, Tyler Geiten, and Xavier Loguette. And
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: the third group is Marvin Harrison, bow Nix and Max Melton.
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: The second one, okay, the only one I would have
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: no interest in is see I.
- 1:03:45Speaker 7: Don't know how Max Melton got in there.
- 1:03:46Speaker 9: Good play a was good, but something about be that
- 1:03:50Speaker 9: mixture of the I mean, the quarterback obviously is great,
- 1:03:54Speaker 9: but the tackle and the wide receiver. I really like
- 1:03:56Speaker 9: Xavier a lot and also just be able to get
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: a good tackles either of.
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: The first two. But is Patrick Paul? I assume that
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: he's going round one, round two, round three. Is that
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: a little that's what I thought like the third round
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: for him a.
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: Little earlier late. I don't know which way, wait a
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: little bit, just because I think, you know, because of
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: the tackle premium. Yeah, but I think that he's probably
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: a third round graded player. Oh okay, but I don't
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: I don't know then, I don't know if he'll be
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: there just because tackles are tackles. You know you're gonna
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: you're gonna see a lot of tackles going in the
- 1:04:28Speaker 7: twenties in this draft. You know you're gonna have Alt Fugawa,
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: I would say, fashion you probably still and then you're
- 1:04:36Speaker 7: gonna see a lot of tackles.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: The guy ends the mims is those guys are gonna
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: all go in the twenties. And so then Day two
- 1:04:42Speaker 7: becomes Kingsley, Sua, Mattia, Patrick Pollock. These guys are gonna fall,
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: you know, fly off the board because.
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: Kingsley guy's the one that's Peninsule's cousin.
- 1:04:50Speaker 7: Yeah, really really talented.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: Floyd in Michigan rights in for all those fans who
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: want to trade back, and we will figure out the
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: QB position down the Road. Please pay attention to the
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: Minnesota Vikings in their negotiations with the Patriots, and the
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Vikings they have been embarrassing themselves. They come across as
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: a desperate team that grossly underestimated the cost to move
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: up into the top four to draft a quarterback. I
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: don't care how bad a team is. When you have
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: an opportunity to draft a possible franchise quarterback, you draft them.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: Plus bad teams pick at the top of the draft
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: and pick quarterbacks all the time.
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: What has Minnesota done?
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: I don't know. How would they embarrass them themself?
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: Well, Jeremy Fowler had a reporter over the weekend, which
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: I don't know if this is what he's getting at,
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: but I have to imagine it is. The Vikings are
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: trying to make this trade without including twenty three. They won't.
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: They don't want to. They don't want to trade both
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: ones to.
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: Move Sow's how's that embarrassing?
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: I don't I have no idea, but that's the latest
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: report is that they acquired twenty three to hopefully still
- 1:05:53Speaker 7: trade up from eleven to get the quarterback and then
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: also take a non quarterback at twenty three.
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean they're obviously trying for a pie in
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: the sky situation. I don't think there's anything embarrassing about
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: trying to give less to make a move. I think
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: the embarrassing thing would be, well, it's worth X and Y,
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: but we're gonna give you X, y Z everything else
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: in the future. That's embarrassing. That's being desperate and overpaying
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: like that, to me would be what you don't want
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: to do. Trying to get away with paying less.
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: To me, is smart.
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: They also have It's not gonna work, but it's smart.
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: Quezi, their general manager, is one of these analytics guys,
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: and his math is a little bit different in terms
- 1:06:32Speaker 7: of the trade chart than everybody else is. And he
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: doesn't put as much value in picks, like he thinks
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: picks are not worth as much.
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: Well the trade charts too, and I understand like a
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: lot of people have said that, like they're not going
- 1:06:45Speaker 6: to get what they want because if you look eleven
- 1:06:47Speaker 6: and twenty three, well, the emailer that emailed in just
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: now he's right, like when you have the quarterback, then
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: that's a premium. It's not just the X on the spreadsheet.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: It's different, right, This is basically a three quarterback draft,
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: and this is the third spot, right, so that costs
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: more than just what it says on the trade show.
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: Absolutely, Mike and Brockton, if reasons why a quarterback fails
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: is an important thing to consider, how can you draft
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: one third overall? With the uncertainties and deficiencies on this team?
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: The offensive line is unproven, regardless of if you draft
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: a left tackle. There's no go to receiver. We have
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: no idea if this offensive coaching group is capable of
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: developing talent or calling plays productively. Why not give it
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: one year to see what your support system actually is
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: so you can identify your deficiencies properly and fix them
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: before bringing in a quarterback who may shoulder the blame
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: for things that aren't his fault. Where these quarterbacks are
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: a crapshoot, why not take the crap shoot next year?
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: See I'm not big on the crapshoot thing.
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: You keep saying that you can't guarantee who will be
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: available at quarterback next year, But it's the same non
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: guarantee this year's class being.
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: Good, right, So why is it better to wait till
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: next year?
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: Take take one year to enhance your roster and system
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: and staff so when you do draft a quarterback, he
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: has the support necessary to succeed.
- 1:08:06Speaker 7: I understand where he's coming from. I don't like, it's
- 1:08:09Speaker 7: not like he's he's totally wrong or anything like that.
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: I would just say, you know, Will Anderson was up
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: at the podium during OTA's the other day and he
- 1:08:16Speaker 7: said that people were coming up to him at the
- 1:08:19Speaker 7: Pro Bowl and asking him to get him to get
- 1:08:23Speaker 7: them to Houston to play with Stroud and to play
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: with Damiko Ryans. Does anybody want to play on the
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: Texans before they drafted C. J.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Stroud?
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: Like, like where the Texans a destination or a team
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: that people looked at as a super Bowl.
- 1:08:36Speaker 6: His argument is basically, you know, like, you're right, it's
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: not you know, it's not wrong. It's you know, build
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: the team before you get the quarterback. But I just
- 1:08:43Speaker 6: I don't really understand if you don't get the quarterback,
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: it's not really gonna matter. You know, with very few exceptions.
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: I think San Francisco was an outlier.
- 1:08:53Speaker 7: It matters.
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: It's it's it's mattered for San Francisco because they're that good. Yeah,
- 1:08:58Speaker 6: I don't think there are a lot of teams like that. Yeah,
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: I think the Texans. The only thing that Texans have
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: offensively is Laramie Tunzel, Like Tunzel was there before Stroud
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: was there and that. But maybe the Patriots look at
- 1:09:10Speaker 6: Mike on Winnu and say he's a blue chip offensive
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: lineman too.
- 1:09:13Speaker 9: I think the Lions are another good example of they
- 1:09:16Speaker 9: built their team. Obviously they didn't draft the quarterback.
- 1:09:19Speaker 6: Well, they got the drafts.
- 1:09:23Speaker 8: But then they built around him and got him everything.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: I think there's no there's no way, there's no way
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: to do it. Like if you are a team that
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: has a lot of holes, you start shipping away at
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: those holes, and when the best player is available for
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: a certain hole, you take them, whether he's a quarterback,
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: a wide receiver, or whatever. You know, like my drafting,
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: like no, let me just finish. Like you know, people say, oh,
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: you can't draft a quarterback until you have people to
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: throw to. Well, I've also heard people say you can't
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: draft a receiver until you have a quarterback to throw to.
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: Him, right, Like both of those things are probably accurate, but.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: But you have to get somebody. You also, like, if
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: the receiver comes first, so the quarterback comes first. Just
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: take the best guy and then you'll fill in the
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: you'll fill in the holes. Like there's no set way
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: of one has to come before the other. You start
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: building your team. It's a process and when an opportunity
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: is there, you take it, and you know, you start
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: filling in the holes after that.
- 1:10:20Speaker 6: And what I hate, like the drafting, the whole crapshoot thing,
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: it's the quarterbacks. I just feel like there's busts at
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: a lot of positions and I just you know, so,
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: what if, for arguments sake, Okay, we're not going to
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: take the quarterback because it's too risky. What if they
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: take Marvin Harrison and he turns out to be the
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: worst wide receiver you've ever seen, Roy Williams or Justin
- 1:10:46Speaker 6: Blackman or Kevin White top ten receivers who missed right, Okay,
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: what if that happens? Are you were in better shape
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: because it wasn't a quarterback?
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:10:56Speaker 7: No, we're screwed.
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: We had the three, We had the third overall pick
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: and got nothing thing out of it. Like, I mean,
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: I just don't understand why we're eliminating the crapshoot part
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: of it by not taking a quarterback.
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: No, you're not.
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: I mean, he wasn't as high. But Nikhil Harry hurt
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: this franchise by missing on that first round pick. That
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: hurt us, you know.
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: Yeah that's an understatement. Yeah it did.
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: There's no there's no argument.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: He wasn't even the third overall.
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: Right, just think about it. How much worse it would
- 1:11:22Speaker 6: be if you miss on the third pick.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: Yeah, let's see, this is emery. Uh, he says. I
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: agree with Paul that beyond Michigan in Ohio State, the
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: Big Ten doesn't have many oppressive teams. However, the Big
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: Ten does have defenses that are much better than ACC.
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: McCarthy has faced seven top twenty scoring defenses in the Big.
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: Ten because none of those teams can play in the
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: past and they can't score. Iowa is in the Big
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: Ten Championship over the past and they can't score ten points.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: While May has faced two in the ACC, not to
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: mention facing the number one rank Michigan defense in practice.
- 1:11:58Speaker 9: Also, and JJ might have had a coaching staff cheating
- 1:12:00Speaker 9: and looking up people's places.
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: But like, I'm not a huge ACC guy. I don't
- 1:12:06Speaker 6: think the ACC is great now, Okay it's not. But
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: I'm sorry if I look at North Carolina having to
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: play Clemson in Florida State every year is being comparable
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: to anybody in the Big Ten having to play Ohio State.
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: More or even n C State this past year was
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: But I'm not even counting them.
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: Like, to me, that's like Wisconsin. But none of those
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: teams can score.
- 1:12:26Speaker 8: But that's just big good this year.
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, Iowa is in the Big Ten Championship because
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: of the way the Big Ten is split, and they
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: could not score ten points in a game.
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: Right, That's just how the games in the Big Ten
- 1:12:39Speaker 7: are played. It's thirteen to ten. It's old by nature.
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: It's old school smash. It's not great defense, it's just
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: bad offense.
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you know. So he goes on to say, uh,
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: McCarthy's QBR is higher than May's QBR in those games
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: where he played better defenses. He says, I'm in favor
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: of drafting May at three purely because of the trades,
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: but their level of defensive competition wasn't similar, you know.
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: So do you know how we say, like in the
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: NFL that the teams, you know, the teams that are
- 1:13:10Speaker 6: in those divisions that have bad offenses have inflated stats. Yeah,
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: well that's in the league when there's only thirty two
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: teams and everybody plays the same teams. Do you imagine
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: how much more out of whack it is in the
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: Big Ten as opposed to playing the team that has
- 1:13:24Speaker 6: a pulse.
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: Well, like, so he goes down, you know, the.
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: Like if Megan, If Megan was here, I'd even go in,
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: you know, double battles. I mean, but you play in Northwestern.
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: Last time, Northwestern could score.
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: But here's here's kind of I make your point, Illinois, he.
- 1:13:39Speaker 6: Goes to Minnesota. None of those teams can move the
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: ball and score.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: You know, since Maryland for better defense that McCarthy's played.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Iowa was second, And I'm telling you what would happen
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: to Iowa if they played in the SEC. I know,
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: I'm That's what I'm making your point. Now, Penn State
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: was tenth at the time, Illinois was number one in
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: twenty twenty two, Nebraska thirteenth, Penn State third, and twenty
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: three Ohio State. Okay, they were good. Ohio State's good
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: and then Iowa again in twenty three. So like Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska,
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:14:10Speaker 6: They're not that good in defenses. Yeah, I know what
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: their numbers say. Their numbers are incredible because they play
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: against a bunch of teams like them that can't go
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: from here to there without falling down.
- 1:14:22Speaker 7: Yeah, is that what you were looking for? I love
- 1:14:24Speaker 7: this thing. Is that what you because I used to
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: feel this way. You know, the Pac twelve has gotten
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: a lot better.
- 1:14:30Speaker 6: Pac twelve had a really good year last year, but
- 1:14:32Speaker 6: the pack twell ironically last.
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: Year of his existences like this for me, where like
- 1:14:37Speaker 7: everybody in the PAC twelve is slow, and so you
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: have like a guy like Nikhil Harry who can reverse
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: field in the PAC twelve. If Nikil Harry tried to
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: reverse field in the SEC, he would have he would
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: have been tackled for like a ten yard loss.
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: And that's why.
- 1:14:49Speaker 6: Michigan and Ohio State have separated themselves from the rest
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: of that conference because they the rest of it still
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: can't move.
- 1:14:55Speaker 7: They got athletes and they get nowt.
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: That's how I feel about the Big twelve. Like all
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: of them can score a ton of offense, like it's
- 1:15:02Speaker 9: like a basketball score, but then none of them can
- 1:15:04Speaker 9: play defense. Like why is the score like seventy two
- 1:15:07Speaker 9: to fifty one.
- 1:15:08Speaker 7: Why it's just the way that those teams are built.
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: You know, they're they're recruiting, they're coaching is all on
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: the offensive side of the ball.
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: It's a great it's a great example. Glad you brought
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: up the Big Twelve. So what happened two years ago?
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: Everybody talks about the National Championship this year from Michigan.
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: Two years ago they played a thoroughly average TCU team
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: out out of the Big Twelve and gave up fifty
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: in the semi finals. And how did JJ McCarthy do
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: in that game? Oh, we threw a couple of pick sixes.
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: Like this great defense couldn't slow down TCU that night.
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: With say it again, Max Duggan, who by the way,
- 1:15:44Speaker 6: was a terrific college quarterback drafted free agency, is nowhere
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: near the caliber of players that we're talking about with
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: with even JJ McCarthy and stone Hands Johnson Stonehands.
- 1:15:55Speaker 9: Yeah, and I would I would say, like, was it
- 1:15:58Speaker 9: this year that we saw Likexas play Alabama tight, Texas
- 1:16:02Speaker 9: beat out Yeah, Like I feel like their offenses can
- 1:16:06Speaker 9: play well. Now Texas is going to the SEC, but
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: their offenses can play in the SEC.
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: That's because they have Steve Sarkisian, right, But if you
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: had like the Biggest twelve offenses that are good offense
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: is year in and year out. If they played in
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: the Big Ten, they would score just the same. Oh yeah,
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: it's not just because the Big twelve can't play defense,
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: which is true, but it would look a lot different
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: if Illinois was playing against Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, even
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: you know back in not not now, but West Virginia
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: about five years ago. Like those Big twelve offenses can
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: can score and TCU is a good offense too. If
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: they were playing those teams instead of Illinois and Nebraska
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: and Northwestern, they wouldn't be ranked number two in the
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: in the country. And defense of disrespect to Megan, but
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: I'll take the game they like when Diego puts the
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: glasses on, which she does the Northwestern they.
- 1:17:00Speaker 7: Or like the one that's like, what's his best film
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: for JJ McCarthy's against Michigan State, who was an absolute
- 1:17:07Speaker 7: train wreck sast year. And every single time you go
- 1:17:10Speaker 7: through a Big ten offensive player and you say, oh,
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: where was his best game? It was against Michigan State.
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: Marvin Harrison junior. You know, all of these guys all
- 1:17:18Speaker 7: went off against Michigan State.
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: Good because they should, right Yeah, their best game should
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: be against the worst play team, you know, Dylan writes
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: in from Augusta, Maine, thinking about McCarthy. What I can't
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: get past when people argue he wasn't asked to do
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: much in college, is wouldn't he be asked to do
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: more if he had the ability. I can't imagine Harbor
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: would hold him back if he truly had elite abilities.
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: That is what scares me up.
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: I'm gonna defend McCarthy a little bit on that, Okay, Like,
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: if you're in college and your Jim hobball, you do
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: what you do to give you the best chance to
- 1:17:51Speaker 6: go twenty seven to one. Yeah, Like, No, I wouldn't
- 1:17:55Speaker 6: have asked him to say, you know, I'm gonna try
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: to help your draft stock here, I'm gonna we're gonna
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: throw it all over the yard. No, I mean hardball
- 1:18:01Speaker 6: was under fire right before he finally started beating Ohio State. Yeah,
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: with Kate McNamara, by the way, he was under fire
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: and he had to win. Yeah, So I don't think
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: that he should have you know, I don't think that's
- 1:18:16Speaker 6: necessarily an indictment on McCarthy, that they played that one the.
- 1:18:18Speaker 7: TCU game is kind of an indictment on McCarthy though,
- 1:18:21Speaker 7: But he was. But in his defense, he put up
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: a bunch of plastic numbers. Second, he was like twenty,
- 1:18:25Speaker 7: and he was like I think he was a true sophomore,
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: like he was young. But yeah, that was the one
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: game where you had to put up points.
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: Like the Alabama game started the same way and he
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: got bailed out.
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: So that was the one game where they couldn't use
- 1:18:38Speaker 9: the extra scouting that they.
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: Got to the game very good. I like this angle
- 1:18:42Speaker 7: as well, just pilot it all.
- 1:18:43Speaker 6: So that's why he would make sense for the Patriots.
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: Knows how, knows how to decipher information.
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: The Big ten stinks is they were signed, stealing and
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: near the players ahead of time.
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: I liked it, so.
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: I thought you were ready to like argue with me
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: on my Big ten. No, it's really it's been bubbling
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: under the surface because I like Drake May, I'm not
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: gonna lie. Yeah, And I just don't think there's a
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: huge difference in those two conferences. I think high end
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: Michigan and Ohio State are better than anybody in the ACCA.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: I think they should get rid of all these stupid
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: conferences and have one Super Conference. It's coming the top
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: fifty teams and it's like soccer in Europe where you
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: can be relegated out. If out of the top Western
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: you're gone right.
- 1:19:27Speaker 7: Well, because of nil and all the TV deals and
- 1:19:29Speaker 7: stuff like that, I think that something they're going to
- 1:19:32Speaker 7: have to reconfigure college football that's coming. Yeah, where it's
- 1:19:35Speaker 7: gonna reckon. There's gonna be all the top teams are
- 1:19:38Speaker 7: going to just play each other and it's not going
- 1:19:39Speaker 7: to be by conference, and you're not gonna have Michigan
- 1:19:42Speaker 7: beating you know.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: All these conference fat cats in their suits. Too bad,
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: you're out. You're out because they're making boat loads of
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: money off you know, running the Big Ten and all
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: that stuff. You're out one one. Super conference. It's coming
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: top fifty teams. That'd be cool, huh.
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: And football is driving the boat chief yep. And basketball
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: is gonna end up having to follow suit. It's gonna
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: ruin that tournament you watch.
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: Oh yeah, this year was wild.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: Why do you think I think so? You think basketball
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: would do?
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: Basketball wants more of the power teams, the money teams
- 1:20:21Speaker 6: in the tournament, and they want to push out the
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: little guys that get automatic bits. Yeah, I personally look
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: at it, not just because I'm a Northeastern guy. Before you,
- 1:20:29Speaker 6: I'll take your little punchline away from you. Yeah, I
- 1:20:32Speaker 6: think that the little guys that would make the tournament.
- 1:20:34Speaker 6: Oh yeah, like the first the first round or two,
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: like when Oakland beats Kentucky. That's what people remember about this.
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: You know, all due respect to Yukon, people will remember
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: those upsets in the first round before long after people
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: remember that.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you know you sixty four teams make that tournament. Like,
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: how many of the money teams are getting shafted.
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: There's a handful, are there. Yeah, there's a handful, not
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: a lot. But they want all of their teams that
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: are quote unquote good in the tournament because they put
- 1:21:04Speaker 6: so much money into it. Yeah, and that's how the
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: that's how we enjoy the n So let's face it,
- 1:21:09Speaker 6: like those are the teams, those those programs are the
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: ones that.
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: Feed the whole.
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: Oh yeah, well Seaton Hall, Saint John's Indiana State is
- 1:21:19Speaker 6: not a big time, but they probably should.
- 1:21:22Speaker 7: Have been into.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: Larry Bird went there, so it big time.
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: Those those teams they want everybody in, like if you
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: went eighteen and fifteen, they want you they want that
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: team in the tournament.
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: Yeah all right, uh Paul's Foods here. But before we
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: take a break, suns out, funds out, and guns out.

- 1:23:33Speaker 3: And we are back with another edition of the PU
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: Halftime Show, joined by Chris Cassidy. I'm a Tis Bauman
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: and Chris. It has been a while, Yes, I think
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: people have been happy being like they're gone. We're not gone.
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: We're taking we were taking all the sabbatical at Cray
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: Well break.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: It's been crazier, all right. Question one.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: I think you're gonna get a T shirt, but we'll see.
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: I don't know what they're sending out these days. Question one,
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: how many touchdowns did Matt Castle throw as a New
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: England Patriot? All Right? His whole career as a Patriot.
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: Question two, before Billy Kundiff's missed game time field goal
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: attempt in a twenty eleven AFC Championship game, the Patriots
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: stopped the Ravens on a potential touchdown to Lee Evans,
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: which Patriots defensive back broke up the potential game winning touchdown.
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: All right, yeah, you have no idea about that one.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: And question three, this is a layup for some how
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: many passing yards of Tom Brady have in Super Bowl
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: fifty two. All right, so Chris.
- 1:24:27Speaker 7: Hold on, Yeah, I had a.
- 1:24:29Speaker 13: Matt Castle jersey when I was little. I begged my
- 1:24:32Speaker 13: parents to get me a mac Castle jersey for my
- 1:24:34Speaker 13: birthday one year because because they were like, I was
- 1:24:37Speaker 13: on the Castle train when Brady was in that starting
- 1:24:41Speaker 13: role and he went down. I was like, it might
- 1:24:43Speaker 13: have been the only nine year old who asked for
- 1:24:46Speaker 13: a Matt Castle jersey.
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: Do you still have it?
- 1:24:49Speaker 7: I mean, if I do, I would never wear it,
- 1:24:51Speaker 7: definitely not.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: Bring it to the studio. But all right, Chris, we're
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: gonna get into this. We got football movies. You know,
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna ease back into the halftime show stuff here.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: So what are your favorite football movies? Do your top three,
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: top three.
- 1:25:02Speaker 7: We can rattle off some yeah, some special ones though, Okay, outside.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: Of well, do your top three and I'll do my time.
- 1:25:08Speaker 7: That sounds good. So my top three.
- 1:25:10Speaker 13: I mean, this is just all, like all time, even
- 1:25:15Speaker 13: out of the category of football movies. Just one of
- 1:25:18Speaker 13: my favorite movies of all time. Remember the Titans. Yep,
- 1:25:22Speaker 13: you know that whole movie what it stands for. It
- 1:25:27Speaker 13: really brings everything together, whether it's football, whether it's you know,
- 1:25:33Speaker 13: just everything, the whole storyline. It's amazing the way they
- 1:25:39Speaker 13: show those players and they're sort of how they interact
- 1:25:43Speaker 13: with each other. It's very interesting and its teaches you
- 1:25:47Speaker 13: about history and it also teaches you just about the
- 1:25:49Speaker 13: game of football in general.
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: Classic Disney.
- 1:25:51Speaker 13: Yeah, and I met coach Boon there you go. He
- 1:25:54Speaker 13: talked to my team one year. It was pretty cool
- 1:25:56Speaker 13: to listen to.
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: Talk of that a legend of the game. What else
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: you got other two?
- 1:26:01Speaker 7: I would put Friday Night Lights at two?
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: All right?
- 1:26:03Speaker 13: I mean Boomy Miles another great story. Yeah, of course,
- 1:26:07Speaker 13: if not a spoiler, but came down to the wire
- 1:26:09Speaker 13: in that championship game. But actually, I think isn't.
- 1:26:12Speaker 7: That that's a based on true stories. Yeah, so's I
- 1:26:16Speaker 7: guess people know this story.
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: Ernie Adams has a tie to that. By the way,
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: he went on his podcast. He knew the writer. The
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: writer went to school with him, and he said he's
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: gonna write about football in Pennsylvanian already. I was like, no,
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: you should go to Texas.
- 1:26:28Speaker 7: Damn those guys.
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Like what else you got?
- 1:26:31Speaker 7: H three?
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: This is great?
- 1:26:33Speaker 13: Iron Gang another great one. I know we talked about
- 1:26:36Speaker 13: it earlier. But first of all, one of the rocks
- 1:26:39Speaker 13: best movies.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: Yeah, just that right before he became like.
- 1:26:44Speaker 7: He was still ding and his arms weren't like crazy
- 1:26:49Speaker 7: blowing out of his shirts.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: All right, all right, that's I had a little more
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: of a description, but no, all right, so responded that,
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: first of all, I love Friday Lights the show more
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: than the movie.
- 1:27:01Speaker 7: I haven't seen the show.
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: The show. You should get on that, by the way.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: But those are great choices. I'm gonna this is in
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: no order, by the way, I think I have grid
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: Iron Gang in my top three. And then I got
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: Varsity Blues, which you're showing my age here because you
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: don't even know what that is. That's Paul Walker playing
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: the quarterback. It has some Friday vibes. That's your homework.
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: Varsity Blue, Varsity Blues. He's never seen Varsity Blues? Crazy?
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: Was that like nineteen ninety two?
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: That was?
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: That was I check real quick? Yeah, Chris, okay, and
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: then I'm throwing any given Sunday in there? Have you
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: seen that one?
- 1:27:42Speaker 7: So that movie is very slow for me? Okay, I
- 1:27:45Speaker 7: don't really like that movie. I watched the first hour
- 1:27:48Speaker 7: and I shut it off because I was like, I'm
- 1:27:50Speaker 7: kind of tired.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: Oh my god, that's a great plot in my idea,
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: Willie Demon. Yeah, all right, all right, So talked about
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: some others that we didn't get in there? Yeah, go ahead,
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: right were Marshall?
- 1:28:00Speaker 13: Ohang, absolute banger. I mean that first of all, that
- 1:28:04Speaker 13: story is horrible, horrible.
- 1:28:06Speaker 7: So so sad.
- 1:28:07Speaker 13: But Matthew McConaughey, Oh my gosh, Matthew McConaughey in that
- 1:28:11Speaker 13: movie is amazing and just again, it tells the whole
- 1:28:16Speaker 13: story very remember the Titans, ask tells the whole story.
- 1:28:20Speaker 7: You get it all there, and like you, you kind
- 1:28:21Speaker 7: of feel the emotions throughout the whole movie, and I
- 1:28:24Speaker 7: love that. I love every part of it.
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: We got the express have you seen that? Is that
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: Ernie Davis? Ernie Davis? Yes, yes, have you seen that one? Though?
- 1:28:33Speaker 7: So we had it on a.
- 1:28:34Speaker 13: CD when it came out. I don't fully remember everything
- 1:28:38Speaker 13: about it, but also I just his story.
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: This is another one.
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: I love the replacements Jean Reeve Shane. Have you not
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: seen that either? No, Chris, you are killing me, brother.
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: That's not that's nineties too, That's no, that's two thousand,
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: two thousand on the dot.
- 1:28:54Speaker 7: Dude, What do you want me to do about these?
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: I want you to go back and do some homework,
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: all right?
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: What about?
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: What about this one? Isn't really focused on the field
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: draft day? It's all right? Yeah, yeah, it is draft season.
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: It's a good movie, ye.
- 1:29:07Speaker 13: I mean, if you're somebody that needs to learn the
- 1:29:11Speaker 13: ins and outs of how a GM functions during draft time,
- 1:29:16Speaker 13: that's a great movie to watch, all right, But I
- 1:29:19Speaker 13: just think it's silly.
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: All I'm amost three more for you. I hope you've
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: seen them. Longest Yard, the Adam Sandler version.
- 1:29:27Speaker 7: Long Long He Started.
- 1:29:28Speaker 13: Adam Sandler version is one of the best Burt Reynolds,
- 1:29:31Speaker 13: the original Reynolds, but the originals, Okay, alright, I prefer
- 1:29:36Speaker 13: that Adam Sandler.
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: One Invincible Mark Wahlberg, that movie's overrated. Okay, but you've
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: seen it, Yeah, okay, I've seen it. And then the
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: water Boy was that six? Yea invisible six? And what
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: about the water Boy?
- 1:29:48Speaker 7: Water Boy is also legendary. Although that's more Is that
- 1:29:52Speaker 7: less about football? Or is that more boy about just
- 1:29:56Speaker 7: Adam Sandler?
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: Adam Sandler, Adam Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. All right, Chris,
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: we had some good, good stuff here. You have some
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: homework because you gotta watch some of these damn movies.
- 1:30:04Speaker 7: I'm probably not going to watch our Sea Blues or replacements.
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: I hate to hear that they might talk about that
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: m filtered actually, but my guys, thanks for tuning in.

- 1:34:30Speaker 4: I thought it was Thursday today. He did all day.
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: I'd say, all right, it's one week away from the draft.
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: All right, little Tuesday trivia you want to partake?
- 1:34:40Speaker 7: Yes, sir?
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: How many touchdowns did Matt Castle throw as a Patriot
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: twenty two incorrect, nineteen incorrect, twenty three. Oh, I was
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: close before Billy Kundiff's missed game tying field goal attempt
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: in the twenty eleven AFC Championship Patriots.
- 1:35:01Speaker 7: That's correct.
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: The Patriots stopped the Ravens on a potential touchdown to
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: Lee Evans. Which Patriots defensive back broke up that potential
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: game winning touchdown?
- 1:35:10Speaker 6: Refras that question which Ravens receiver dropped the pass in
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: the end that would be Lee Evans?
- 1:35:15Speaker 7: Well, I wasn't sure if we were going.
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: I was going to say Sterling Moore. And at the time,
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: I remember Paul pooh poohing, how good a play that
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: was for Sterling Moore?
- 1:35:25Speaker 7: Hands baby laid hands?
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: Because right, it's a it's a drop.
- 1:35:29Speaker 7: And if.
- 1:35:32Speaker 6: If Wes Welker or Randy Moss ever did that, yeah,
- 1:35:36Speaker 6: they'd be destroyed.
- 1:35:37Speaker 7: I actually saw that going around Twitter, the Welker play
- 1:35:39Speaker 7: in twenty eleven, and like, again, the was it a drop?
- 1:35:43Speaker 7: Was it a bad throw? It's like, guys, it's been
- 1:35:45Speaker 7: it's been over ten years.
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: It's a drop. I think we can move on. It's
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: both it's a drop. Wasn't a perfect throw, but it should.
- 1:35:51Speaker 7: Have been a bad throw that was that was could
- 1:35:53Speaker 7: have could have been caught.
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: How many passing yards did TB twelve have in Super
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: Bowl fifty two? Five o five five oh five is correct?
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: The one they lost?
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: I mean, the answer tells me which one it is,
- 1:36:08Speaker 6: but I, you know, like the fifty two, I have
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: a hard time with those, like knowing which one, which
- 1:36:13Speaker 6: one is which.
- 1:36:14Speaker 7: Yeah, when you watch that game, which I did watch
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: it back one time, and like how wide open some
- 1:36:21Speaker 7: of the Patriots receivers were in that game for a Super.
- 1:36:23Speaker 6: Bowl is wild And there was a couple of like
- 1:36:26Speaker 6: broken plays for like fifty yards.
- 1:36:28Speaker 7: Yeah, like chrim the sideline gronk. You know, Brandon Cooks
- 1:36:32Speaker 7: before he got hurt obviously had a big catch, and
- 1:36:35Speaker 7: these guys there's nobody within twenty yards. Like I have
- 1:36:37Speaker 7: no idea what the Eagles secondary was doing.
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: So I had to do with the Patriots have won
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: that game if Cooks didn't get hurt. Does that happened
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: in the first half?
- 1:36:46Speaker 14: I thought you were gonna say, Malcolm Butler, it's hard
- 1:36:48Speaker 14: to argue that they would have won that game because
- 1:36:50Speaker 14: of anything.
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: In addition, they could have done offensive. Yeah they didn't punt.
- 1:36:53Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah. If Malcolm Butler plays easily, they win that
- 1:36:57Speaker 7: game easily easily.
- 1:36:59Speaker 6: So I had to do a thing for Sailor on TikTok. Yeah,
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: I'm not sure if that ever got posted.
- 1:37:06Speaker 14: I saw it.
- 1:37:06Speaker 8: Yeah, it came up on my feed.
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: So we were doing like a quick bracket of the
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: best postseason games, and she had it on the bracket
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: with the Super Bowls with the Roman numerals, and I'm like, yeah,
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: we're gonna need to do I need to write the
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: numbers out.
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: I always have to do thirty six and work upwards.
- 1:37:26Speaker 7: Right, you know.
- 1:37:27Speaker 6: But when you just look at it real quick and
- 1:37:29Speaker 6: you're like, oh, that's forty nine, Okay, Seattle. But it
- 1:37:34Speaker 6: takes me a second to think about what is one.
- 1:37:36Speaker 8: It was TikTok loves Paul and Evan.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: I think, yeah, I think Seattle is the best one.
- 1:37:41Speaker 7: That's my favorite super Bowl. I think obviously the twenty
- 1:37:44Speaker 7: eight to three story is more Hollywood, you know, the comeback.
- 1:37:49Speaker 7: But just two heavyweights in the middle of the ring
- 1:37:53Speaker 7: for four quarters. Yeah, two all time great rosters.
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: Yep, Barton Poland, I see Daniels as a Jalen Hurts type,
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: someone who you just want and need to maximize on
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: the rookie contract, and as soon as they get paid,
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: I don't know if they can lead your team without
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: the surrounding cast. I think you'd be wasting twenty percent
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: of what makes him valuable dropping him into this offense.
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: And he's talking about Daniels. That's why I'm declaring myself,
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: take Drake May if he's there. If not, trade down, I.
- 1:38:27Speaker 6: Mean, I get his Daniels take. I don't get the
- 1:38:29Speaker 6: comparison to Hurts.
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: There's some passing comparisons to hurt No.
- 1:38:33Speaker 6: No, I don't mean as a player, Like he's sort
- 1:38:35Speaker 6: of making this line of demarcation about you don't pay them, Like,
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: well they pay. They were like eleven and one.
- 1:38:42Speaker 8: Yeah, was he saying if you take away Hurtz's surround.
- 1:38:44Speaker 6: Recording cast, like they're a good team. Yeah, Philadelphia has
- 1:38:48Speaker 6: good players, and they went to the Super Bowl and
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: had every chance to win it, and the next year
- 1:38:54Speaker 6: they were well on their way to do that and
- 1:38:55Speaker 6: they fell apart at the end of the like they
- 1:38:57Speaker 6: were ten and one right finished the eleven and yeah,
- 1:39:01Speaker 6: Like is that because the supporting cast was not there
- 1:39:04Speaker 6: like that. That's the only part that I can get.
- 1:39:07Speaker 6: I get the comparisons, you know, obviously stylistically.
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: Yeah, this this next email, I don't know what I
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: feel about. I might have to go on a rant
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: about this one. Wanted to respond to the email. Let
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: me know when you decide, Okay, I wanted to respond.
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: This is Longino from Jersey. I want to respond to
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: the emailer that wants to draft Daniels. Just want to
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: say that I honestly believe we don't have the coaching
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: staff that fits Daniel's play style. I would love a
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: dynamic player like him, but I don't think he'll work
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: in whatever system this is. I feel like May is
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: the better choice and fits the profile we need for
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: this organization. What's your int My My problem with that
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: is if we have a coaching style that can't take
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: the better player, then I have a problem with our
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: coaching staff.
- 1:39:54Speaker 7: Well, maybe he's not the best. Maybe it's more closely,
- 1:39:58Speaker 7: you know, it's sort of like, you know, the intangible
- 1:40:01Speaker 7: stuff with McCarthy or the record with McCarthy. I wouldn't
- 1:40:04Speaker 7: say that that puts him above the tier two quarterbacks.
- 1:40:09Speaker 7: But if you feel like it's close, and then you
- 1:40:10Speaker 7: have a guy that's got those intangibles. I think it's
- 1:40:13Speaker 7: the same thing with the system, where the system is
- 1:40:15Speaker 7: like maybe the difference maker. Like you if you have
- 1:40:17Speaker 7: a kind of split between Daniels and May, I.
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: Guess if they're close. But if you're saying that Daniels
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: is going to be the better quarterback in the NFL
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: and because of our coaching staff in their system, he
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: wouldn't be a fit in the Patriots, I got a
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: big problem with that.
- 1:40:33Speaker 6: You know, well, yeah, I understand what you're saying on
- 1:40:36Speaker 6: the surface, but if you have an offense that you
- 1:40:38Speaker 6: don't think Daniels would be a better player than May and.
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: Change your offense, oh okay.
- 1:40:42Speaker 7: I just don't know if it's that easy.
- 1:40:45Speaker 6: But like new coaching staff, like why, I mean, because
- 1:40:49Speaker 6: you have a coaching staff that has a system that
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: they want to put in.
- 1:40:52Speaker 9: But I would say that when, by the way, when
- 1:40:55Speaker 9: the Ravens picked Lamar Jackson and they decided to.
- 1:40:57Speaker 8: Go with them, they had to change their whole offense exactly.
- 1:40:59Speaker 8: He's not the same.
- 1:41:01Speaker 6: But they went out and hired a different guy.
- 1:41:03Speaker 7: Yeah, they hired Greg who is the king of the
- 1:41:06Speaker 7: mobile quarterback.
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: Do you think it's that drastic between Daniels in May
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: that you would have to hire a.
- 1:41:12Speaker 6: New statf I'm just saying hypothetically, I know, but.
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: I'm asking, does Daniels require as the Patriots exists today?
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: Would he require different coaches to be successful?
- 1:41:22Speaker 7: On the surface, I'd say yes, just because I think
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: a VP wants to run a West Coast Cleveland style offense,
- 1:41:31Speaker 7: tons of under center, tons of play action, bombs away
- 1:41:35Speaker 7: off of play action, you know, like vertical shots down
- 1:41:38Speaker 7: the field off of that. But do I think that
- 1:41:41Speaker 7: av Do I think highly enough of a VP that
- 1:41:43Speaker 7: he could maybe adjust it? Yeah, but he's not Greg Roman, Like,
- 1:41:47Speaker 7: he's not you know, college coach that has the background,
- 1:41:51Speaker 7: like a Cliff Kingsbury that has a background in that
- 1:41:53Speaker 7: type of offense. So it is different, Like it is
- 1:41:57Speaker 7: stylistically something that I have talked about a lot. But
- 1:42:00Speaker 7: that Drake May is the best fit for the traditional
- 1:42:04Speaker 7: Alex Van Pelt offense, does that mean that Alex van
- 1:42:07Speaker 7: Pelt can't morphit to fit Daniels. I know, I mean,
- 1:42:11Speaker 7: he's a professional coach, so maybe he could.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: That's what I think. I mean.
- 1:42:15Speaker 6: It's football, you know, yeah, that's but that's not true though,
- 1:42:20Speaker 6: you know. I mean, I understand your point on the surface,
- 1:42:23Speaker 6: but if you have an offense that wants to do
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: X and you don't think that that quarterback can do X,
- 1:42:28Speaker 6: it doesn't make any sense.
- 1:42:30Speaker 7: I want to do what's best for the quarterback, right,
- 1:42:32Speaker 7: which means changing the system. And I think the one
- 1:42:34Speaker 7: thing that probably got him fired in Cleveland was Deshaun Watson, Right.
- 1:42:39Speaker 7: He couldn't build the system around a quarterback like that
- 1:42:41Speaker 7: is the thing that got him fired, and that's Jaden Daniels.
- 1:42:44Speaker 7: He wanted Deshaun Watson under center, turning around with hard
- 1:42:47Speaker 7: play action. And I heard Evan has used this phrase
- 1:42:51Speaker 7: with Jaden Daniels. If you want to have him play
- 1:42:53Speaker 7: like that, that's sort of taking away his superpower. Right,
- 1:42:56Speaker 7: that's a phrase that you've used in the past, and
- 1:42:58Speaker 7: I agree with it.
- 1:42:59Speaker 6: It doesn't mean that he can't do another offense Alex
- 1:43:02Speaker 6: van Pelt, but I don't think that's the offense that
- 1:43:05Speaker 6: he is really a customer running.
- 1:43:06Speaker 7: Like we're gonna put Jade and Daniels under center and
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: then we're gonna hard play action, nine step drop bootleg.
- 1:43:14Speaker 7: Then we're gonna have him come off the bootleg and
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: we're gonna have him throw it fifty yards down the field.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:43:19Speaker 7: No, not not the quarterback for that.
- 1:43:22Speaker 9: So in.
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: In Lamar Jackson's first year, he didn't have Greg Roman, right.
- 1:43:27Speaker 6: I believe they got him after that, but they might
- 1:43:30Speaker 6: have had him, I don't remember.
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: I think he was.
- 1:43:31Speaker 7: I don't think he was the play caller yet. I
- 1:43:33Speaker 7: think he was like on the staff, but I believe
- 1:43:36Speaker 7: he was already in the building.
- 1:43:37Speaker 6: I remember John Harbaugh getting a lot of credit for
- 1:43:40Speaker 6: sort of scrapping his offense, Yeah, and sort of doing
- 1:43:43Speaker 6: it differently with you know, you know, with a change.
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: But yeah, no, it was real. It was a I
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: think a courageous move to take Lamar Jackson and just
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: we're gonna run an offense that's gonna be best for
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: our quarterback. And I think they've worked.
- 1:44:00Speaker 7: He was the tight ends coach the Eagles to seventeen eighteen.
- 1:44:05Speaker 6: He was assistant head coach, tight ends coach. Yeah, well
- 1:44:09Speaker 6: so he wasn't, but he wasn't the play caller until
- 1:44:11Speaker 6: the next year.
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: I think they did, but I don't think they really
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: started using Hurts the right way until his second year.
- 1:44:16Speaker 7: You know, they definitely turns. His offense is notoriously one
- 1:44:19Speaker 7: of the most watered down offenses in the league. Yeah,
- 1:44:22Speaker 7: they they run like five different plays. There's like three
- 1:44:25Speaker 7: different types of Reid option style plays that they run
- 1:44:27Speaker 7: with him, and it's ISO shots to those two receivers
- 1:44:30Speaker 7: and push and sixth places.
- 1:44:33Speaker 6: But to that point, they did have a different coach
- 1:44:37Speaker 6: come in. Yeah, right, his rookie year. It wasn't the
- 1:44:41Speaker 6: same coordinator. Right, wasn't stik in there?
- 1:44:46Speaker 7: Yes, Stichen's there. Yeah, I mean I think that that's
- 1:44:48Speaker 7: a big reason why they fell off last year, was
- 1:44:50Speaker 7: I think he left. I think Stichen might be the
- 1:44:52Speaker 7: brain of that entire thing, because they are very simplistic
- 1:44:55Speaker 7: and they just found ways to dress it up differently,
- 1:44:58Speaker 7: pre snapped to make you think it was something else
- 1:45:00Speaker 7: when it wasn't.
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: Florian writes in from Germany. Assuming the Patriots take May
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: or any other quarterback at three, how do you feel
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: about taking wide receivers in round two and three? For
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: examples able to get in tz Walker. I don't like that,
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: you know, doubling up. You don't want to do that.
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: I don't mind doubling up, but not in two and three.
- 1:45:21Speaker 7: Yeah, too much or to I think that it is
- 1:45:24Speaker 7: a if they decide to go receiver with thirty four
- 1:45:28Speaker 7: and then they wanted to take two tackles in rounds
- 1:45:31Speaker 7: three and four, maybe they have two guys that are
- 1:45:33Speaker 7: graded pretty similarly and they both think could project the starters.
- 1:45:36Speaker 7: So we're just gonna hedge our bets and take two
- 1:45:38Speaker 7: of them, and that double dip I think makes sense
- 1:45:40Speaker 7: they which have done multiple times in the past.
- 1:45:43Speaker 6: Right, Or if you take the tackle in the second
- 1:45:46Speaker 6: round and you wait till the third round, then I'm
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: not necessarily minding if you go third and fourth with receivers. Yeah,
- 1:45:53Speaker 6: but I think that you need to take three different
- 1:45:56Speaker 6: positions with the first three picks.
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: Emailer rights in and he says, Hello, we host the
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: podcast out of Colorado. We're looking for Patriots insiders that
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: be interested in being a podcast guest next week to
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: discuss the Patriots Draft, and anyone be interested, Paul will
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: do it.
- 1:46:11Speaker 7: That's Paul. Why is that Paul?
- 1:46:14Speaker 6: Actually the one that did the.
- 1:46:17Speaker 7: That was you. I actually have another one tomorrow too.
- 1:46:19Speaker 6: I did the main radio station to.
- 1:46:22Speaker 7: People up there.
- 1:46:23Speaker 14: Actually the person that does these is Deuce. You gotta
- 1:46:26Speaker 14: you gotta call. You got deuce written on it. You
- 1:46:28Speaker 14: gotta in all serious to send us. You know, forward
- 1:46:32Speaker 14: that email friend to me and make sure I get it.
- 1:46:34Speaker 7: Oh is that a web radio?
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: Yeah, you got it.
- 1:46:37Speaker 7: I respond to those people. I have a soft spot.
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: Remember, you want to reach back down. You're not a
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: ladder puller. You keep the ladder down so others can
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: reach your heights.
- 1:46:47Speaker 7: Right, Okay, do you respond to the heights?
- 1:46:52Speaker 4: Heights?
- 1:46:53Speaker 7: Heights is a strong word ever to Everest whatever I
- 1:46:57Speaker 7: can't do you listen? Do you respond to like the
- 1:47:00Speaker 7: college kids?
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: Yeah, Paul does a whole school circuit and where he
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: goes to like grade schools and high schools and talks
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: to them.
- 1:47:09Speaker 6: This is where he's really a bad guy. You know
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: how many times Fred has said to me, like separately,
- 1:47:14Speaker 6: like you know, it's really cool that you do that.
- 1:47:16Speaker 6: And now he's on Now we were on the radio
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: and everybody's listening.
- 1:47:20Speaker 4: This morning. You knew that he was he was right.
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: You were making fun of him. You said you were mean.
- 1:47:25Speaker 7: Well, it was different.
- 1:47:26Speaker 6: He was making fun of a tennis that I know, Dennis,
- 1:47:29Speaker 6: I know, but.
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: He was right. Kind of Yeah, so sometimes you play
- 1:47:33Speaker 4: a car.
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: But yeah, I do some some high school stuff, some college.
- 1:47:38Speaker 14: I'm going to send them all to you, not because no, no, no,
- 1:47:40Speaker 14: you're not going to send them all to me. Just
- 1:47:42Speaker 14: wait till you get the wait till you get the
- 1:47:43Speaker 14: library circuit.
- 1:47:44Speaker 7: I did a couple of live.
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: Paul also does the awards banquet circuit where he talks
- 1:47:50Speaker 4: at awards.
- 1:47:51Speaker 7: I don't do couple libraries.
- 1:47:53Speaker 9: Oh.
- 1:47:53Speaker 7: I do the club.
- 1:47:54Speaker 6: I've done the club a couple of times.
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: Club that's ef every club, that's my club.
- 1:48:00Speaker 7: A club I've ever said.
- 1:48:01Speaker 6: It's like the athletic club.
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: It's hard to get into. Can anyone join?
- 1:48:07Speaker 6: Well, yeah, as long as you roshdy athlete. Well, I
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: mean I think anybody. It's it's like a charity. It's
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: you give scholarships for the current.
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: Like the Harvard club.
- 1:48:17Speaker 7: They don't.
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: I did get a tie with the crest on it
- 1:48:24Speaker 6: the club.
- 1:48:26Speaker 9: I met someone from your Everett High school Friday. I
- 1:48:29Speaker 9: had a panel and doctor Shirker I think is his name.
- 1:48:33Speaker 9: He played football and lacrosse there and now he's an
- 1:48:36Speaker 9: orthopedic surcher.
- 1:48:37Speaker 7: How old is he?
- 1:48:38Speaker 8: I have no idea, but.
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: It's probably after Paul's time, maybe because maybe they have across.
- 1:48:48Speaker 6: You can't give every guys every kids.
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: It's a weapon. Wow, baseball bat isn't what I went.
- 1:48:54Speaker 6: I went. No, A hockey stick isn't either a friend.
- 1:48:58Speaker 6: It's a stupid Paul, Why are you killing me today?
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:49:04Speaker 4: But anyway, Paul, like he gives back to the kids.
- 1:49:08Speaker 7: Make fun of this, but what what I'll take it?
- 1:49:11Speaker 7: Who's making fun of you? I try to as well,
- 1:49:13Speaker 7: but I always feel like I don't wanna you know,
- 1:49:17Speaker 7: not that I love my job, don't get me wrong,
- 1:49:19Speaker 7: but you gotta be honest too about about certain things.
- 1:49:22Speaker 7: Like one kid asked me, like, what's the work life balance?
- 1:49:24Speaker 7: Like I'm like, well, like during football season, not so good,
- 1:49:30Speaker 7: it's not so great. Like I'm not gonna lie. I'm
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: not gonna sit here and tell you because then you
- 1:49:33Speaker 7: get into it and you don't you know, you're thinking
- 1:49:35Speaker 7: one thing and then it's a totally different.
- 1:49:37Speaker 6: Ever, catch yourself trying to be so like deep, you know, like,
- 1:49:40Speaker 6: so what are you interested? I just I love sports? Yeah,
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: but do you love to write?
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: But do you love it?
- 1:49:45Speaker 8: What's the thing you love?
- 1:49:46Speaker 7: Do you really really love it?
- 1:49:48Speaker 9: So it's funny you talked about that because in my
- 1:49:50Speaker 9: higher view or whatever it's called. They asked me what
- 1:49:52Speaker 9: work life balance look like for me? Like, is this
- 1:49:55Speaker 9: a true question?
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that that question should never be asked to someone
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: going for a job. Been pro sports. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:50:02Speaker 4: if you're looking for work life balance, go find another professional.
- 1:50:06Speaker 7: Which is totally fine, Like, you know what you're signing
- 1:50:07Speaker 7: up for. Just these kids should know that that's what
- 1:50:10Speaker 7: they're signing up for. You at kids today, they're different, Evan,
- 1:50:13Speaker 7: keep in mind, it's different.
- 1:50:15Speaker 6: It's it's like, you know, working for a hospital, Like
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: there's no weekends, there's no off days, there's no holidays.
- 1:50:21Speaker 6: We've had games in recent years on Thanksgiving that's exactly Christmas, Eve,
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: New Year's. You know, you just you figure it out
- 1:50:29Speaker 6: when when the game falls. You work beats working for
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: a living.
- 1:50:33Speaker 4: But sure so one of our listeners actually work for
- 1:50:36Speaker 4: PFF and we've gone back and forth about their grading system.
- 1:50:40Speaker 4: But he's writing back in.
- 1:50:42Speaker 6: If I apologize, can we stop talking about this?
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: He says, I was excited to hear the email read
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: last week and uh caused some discussion. Normally I listened
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: to the podcast, but trying to get this on the show.
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: A couple answers and reactions to the questions. Mike's question
- 1:50:57Speaker 4: he asked how I graded Vince Wilfork. I actually wasn't
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: a greater. I was assigned to watching games and labeling
- 1:51:04Speaker 4: each player at each position defensive formations, offensive formations. This
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: was entry level. It used to take me seven to
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: eight hours per game. It was brutal and the hardest
- 1:51:13Speaker 4: money I ever made. Two people did each game. They
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: would compare each person's mapping for discrepancies. If you were
- 1:51:19Speaker 4: one hundred percent accurate, you made one hundred bucks, scaling
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: down to zero if you were less than ninety percent accurate.
- 1:51:26Speaker 4: I once got zero dollars for a Patriots Raiders game
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: where the Raiders swapped out a guard in the third
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: quarter that they didn't notice. And this was the moment
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: I knew I couldn't keep doing eight hours of rewatching
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: per game.
- 1:51:38Speaker 6: That's a funny start. I don't mean to laugh at you,
- 1:51:40Speaker 6: but that's a funny story.
- 1:51:41Speaker 7: I interviewed for one of their positions like that coming
- 1:51:44Speaker 7: out of college, and I knew at the beginning that
- 1:51:49Speaker 7: this was something that was not.
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: Going to be worth even for you.
- 1:51:52Speaker 7: Yeah, it was, because it's like one hundred dollars a game,
- 1:51:55Speaker 7: and it just you're charting like, oh, he was the
- 1:51:58Speaker 7: one technique, he was the zero, he was the five,
- 1:52:01Speaker 7: he was this. It's it's tedious, he says.
- 1:52:04Speaker 4: Overall agreement with Evan. Ultimately I get, I get not
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: putting one hundred percent stake in the ratings, But what
- 1:52:10Speaker 4: PFF tracks is ultimately a net positive and getting a
- 1:52:15Speaker 4: pulse on who is playing well. And a lot of
- 1:52:17Speaker 4: the metrics they tracked do provide insight. Not surprising that
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: some NFL players are going to roll their eyes at
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: some of the ratings. But I can also say that
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: when I was there in twenty eleven twelve, there were
- 1:52:29Speaker 4: a couple NFL scouting departments that work directly with PFF
- 1:52:32Speaker 4: on getting data from them, So the metrics were valued
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: in the NFL, as some departments preferred to use PFF
- 1:52:38Speaker 4: to outsource some of those metrics and analysis.
- 1:52:42Speaker 7: Yeah, they all thirty two teams now have contracts with PFF.
- 1:52:46Speaker 7: Is that right?
- 1:52:46Speaker 4: The entire league bill is no longer what do you
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: mean contracts with them?
- 1:52:50Speaker 7: They they subscribe. No, no, no, they like work with
- 1:52:52Speaker 7: them on the things that they're talking about. Because a
- 1:52:54Speaker 7: lot of these tedious jobs like if you can outsource
- 1:52:58Speaker 7: it and free up people to do things maybe are
- 1:53:00Speaker 7: more important than mapping out you know, alignments and stuff
- 1:53:03Speaker 7: like that. That saves people time and they go do
- 1:53:06Speaker 7: other things with that time. So PFF for a lot
- 1:53:09Speaker 7: of these places used a lot of this stuff. I
- 1:53:11Speaker 7: couldn't agree more about the grades. The grades to me
- 1:53:13Speaker 7: are like past fail. If you look at them to
- 1:53:15Speaker 7: like rank, you know, who's the best quarterback versus the
- 1:53:18Speaker 7: second versus the third, You're probably not gonna get that.
- 1:53:21Speaker 7: But if a guy has you know, a good grade
- 1:53:24Speaker 7: and is grading out well in their system, or a
- 1:53:27Speaker 7: guy has got an F grade in the system that
- 1:53:29Speaker 7: usually is pretty stable of this guy's had a good season,
- 1:53:32Speaker 7: that guy's had a not so good scealed Yeah, But I.
- 1:53:34Speaker 4: Think where people roll the rise is when they say
- 1:53:36Speaker 4: so and so is the highest gradedlignment, and you know
- 1:53:39Speaker 4: by watching he's not he should be.
- 1:53:41Speaker 7: You know, they have a tough time. I would say
- 1:53:43Speaker 7: with alignment in particular, my.
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: Problem isn't necessarily the evaluation per se. It's it's all percentages.
- 1:53:50Speaker 6: And that's why I think, and it's not their fault
- 1:53:54Speaker 6: that their numbers get interpreted. And I think incorrect ways,
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: Like this guy is the best cover corner in the league.
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: He's played, you know, twenty percent of the snaps, so
- 1:54:06Speaker 6: that means like he was successful on like, you know,
- 1:54:10Speaker 6: eighteen of his twenty plays, so he's ranked higher than
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: Steph Gilmore the year he won Defensive MVP. Like that's
- 1:54:17Speaker 6: the kind of stuff that I think gets in the mainstream. Yeah,
- 1:54:20Speaker 6: and again that's not PFF's fault. Yeah, that people don't
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: understand how the numbers are arrived at.
- 1:54:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that's why we're kind of on the
- 1:54:28Speaker 7: same page. Like when the Patriots are when we turn
- 1:54:31Speaker 7: the page to another game another week, I'll pull up
- 1:54:34Speaker 7: their depth chart page that has like they're starting eleven
- 1:54:38Speaker 7: on both sides of the ball, and it will have
- 1:54:40Speaker 7: the colors of like, this guy's a good starter, that
- 1:54:42Speaker 7: guy's a bad starter, or whatever, and just to get
- 1:54:44Speaker 7: a feel of who's playing well, who's not playing well.
- 1:54:46Speaker 7: You know what the lineups are, Like, they're very good
- 1:54:49Speaker 7: at that. You know, these are the five guys on
- 1:54:50Speaker 7: the offensive line that are playing right now. You know,
- 1:54:52Speaker 7: this guy's hurt, so he's not in the lineup card.
- 1:54:55Speaker 7: You know that sort of thing.
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: Jack writes in in response to Paul ranked against the
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: defenses against which Michigan has played, I have only this
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: to say, Michigan twenty seven, Alabama twenty in, Michigan thirty four,
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: Washington thirteen.
- 1:55:11Speaker 7: Washington defense wasn't all that great, so that one Washington
- 1:55:14Speaker 7: defense was terrible. Yeah, Alabama's defense forgot to cover Blake
- 1:55:19Speaker 7: Kormon for it down. Yeah, and great throat. Though I think.
- 1:55:25Speaker 6: I think Alabama was lucky to be in the playoffs.
- 1:55:29Speaker 8: They should not have been in the playoffs.
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: I thought it should be and Emory says, I appreciate
- 1:55:33Speaker 4: the discussion of Big Ten versus ACC, but the league
- 1:55:36Speaker 4: disagrees with you. Over the last two drafts, there have
- 1:55:39Speaker 4: been ten ACC defenders taken in the first three rounds
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: of the draft. For first three, second, three to third,
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: the Big Ten has had twenty four. To your point,
- 1:55:50Speaker 4: the offenses do contribute to defensive rankings, but there is
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: also simply way more defensive talent in the Big Ten
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: than the ACC.
- 1:55:59Speaker 6: Over how many years that I don't know. I don't
- 1:56:04Speaker 6: don't understand why we're limiting to just one side of
- 1:56:06Speaker 6: the ball. Yeah, as an example of one conference, but
- 1:56:09Speaker 6: I think those two conferences very comparable. I think Ohio
- 1:56:13Speaker 6: State and Michigan are better than Florida State and Clemson
- 1:56:16Speaker 6: right now.
- 1:56:17Speaker 8: Agreed.
- 1:56:18Speaker 6: The rest of it, I think is the same.
- 1:56:21Speaker 7: I also think that it's you know, you'd start to
- 1:56:23Speaker 7: look at how many defensive players, offensive players are drafted, well,
- 1:56:26Speaker 7: when twenty of them are coming out of Michigan and
- 1:56:28Speaker 7: Ohio State exactly, then it's you know, it's a little
- 1:56:31Speaker 7: bit different. I'm not saying that. Is it like the
- 1:56:33Speaker 7: ACC has all those towns and.
- 1:56:34Speaker 6: I'm not even telling you that the Big Ten isn't better.
- 1:56:37Speaker 6: I'm just saying they're comparable. We're talking about the Big Ten.
- 1:56:40Speaker 7: It's like like it's the Big Ten and the SEC.
- 1:56:44Speaker 7: It's not.
- 1:56:44Speaker 6: It's the SEC and everybody else.
- 1:56:47Speaker 4: And really you should talk about the teams. It's Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia.
- 1:56:52Speaker 4: You know, it's like ten tens.
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: But I would even say in the in the SEC,
- 1:56:57Speaker 6: give me Texas, A and m give me uh Florida.
- 1:57:01Speaker 6: You know, Florida, you know more often than not Tennessee
- 1:57:04Speaker 6: the last few years. Yeah, like the mediocre Missouri was
- 1:57:09Speaker 6: really good last Oh yeah, they were the mediocre teams
- 1:57:12Speaker 6: in the SEC are far better than n State.
- 1:57:15Speaker 7: Always got some some prospects.
- 1:57:18Speaker 6: Robinson Ole Miss Ole, miss has had some high end talent.
- 1:57:22Speaker 4: L from Wish, Wisconsin. Listening to Fred talk about the
- 1:57:26Speaker 4: quarterbacks this year, it's clear that he has some unresolved
- 1:57:28Speaker 4: trauma stemming from the mac Jones pick. Probably shut up, Fred,
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: All these guys are better than mac Jones. Just look
- 1:57:34Speaker 4: at the bright side.
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: Uh, these all four of these guys are absolutely better
- 1:57:39Speaker 6: than more physically talented. Yes, and I would throw panics
- 1:57:42Speaker 6: and make it five yep. Okay, they're all They're all
- 1:57:46Speaker 6: more talent, more athletic, better arms.
- 1:57:49Speaker 4: Okay, well, let's say in something. All Right, that's gonna
- 1:57:51Speaker 4: be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered. We'll be
- 1:57:54Speaker 4: back on Thursday, Thursday, catch twenty two tomorrow. Am all right,
