- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker, quicker.
- 0:36Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt pen knife.
- 0:43Yes, that's me. I'm my ukulele.
- 0:45The Doctor Who Commentary podcast.
- 0:47Hello, my name is Joe Ford and I have assembled the Dream team.
- 0:53Once again, the acidic barbs of. Father and son John, and in a
- 1:00while. Maybe I should do it the other
- 1:01way around actually. Because I know which direction
- 1:03the aesthetic barbs are coming from.
- 1:05Eddie and John Arnold. Hello, gentlemen.
- 1:11Good evening. We did say see you next Tuesday
- 1:15last time. It's a few Tuesdays are.
- 1:17It's a few Tuesdays. Yeah, well, you know,
- 1:19Australians, these southern Australians coming over here and
- 1:23demanding social time. It's outrageous.
- 1:28I understand that. Did you gentlemen meet him at
- 1:30the BFI? Yeah.
- 1:32I certainly did. Yeah, well, I think we did,
- 1:35because to be fair, I don't recognize faces of my father's
- 1:38Middle East friends. Excuse me?
- 1:40You don't recognize my face then?
- 1:43You're not as Middle East as he is.
- 1:44Oh, thank you. Oh, John, how Middle East are
- 1:48you? John can't possibly say it
- 1:51slightly more middle-aged than you are.
- 1:52Slightly less middle-aged, you're. 51.
- 1:55Definitely less middle-aged than Eddie.
- 1:58God, yeah. OK, but I have a question for
- 2:01you both. How excited are you after the
- 2:05previous two episodes of let's be honest, adolescent animation?
- 2:10How excited are you to have live pictures moving again?
- 2:14Let's start with you, Eddie. I am gobsmacked to have a 60s
- 2:19Doctor Who episode. This is actually moving image.
- 2:23That's right. And it's not animated.
- 2:25John. Well, we've got the return of
- 2:28Deborah Watling to look for too, so all is well with the world.
- 2:33Yes, now that was a bit of a bone of.
- 2:35Contention in the first half, wasn't it?
- 2:36Because obviously Eddie and I are on the same page with the
- 2:39ICE 4 as we both think it's rather good.
- 2:41John doesn't think it's rather good, however.
- 2:45John And I think that Victoria is just.
- 2:49A wench and. You're both wrong.
- 2:51Eddie rather live so well. Eddie, what do you like about
- 2:53her so much? What's not to like about her do?
- 2:59You want a list. Yeah.
- 3:01OK. OK, you watch her in episode. 4
- 3:04Where she's going. Help somebody.
- 3:10OK. So if you're in that situation.
- 3:12Even with the Daleks 2. Even with the Daleks 3.
- 3:15Even with the Daleks 4. Yes, and those are all good.
- 3:18So once a few from the and then few from Deep 6 I'll give a pass
- 3:22because she's off. If I was in that situation, I
- 3:25would have grabbed the nearest bin bag and ice skated down that
- 3:30mountain away from that ice warrior so far.
- 3:32So I would have been like, what's the name of a famous
- 3:35skier? John.
- 3:36Oh, friends clamor. You see me going down there, woo
- 3:42snow flying, the Ice Warriors would never hope, and then I'd
- 3:45go so long suckers, and bring the mountain down.
- 3:49On their heads. Frankly, I thought you were
- 3:52going to say would have gone up and shagged one of them.
- 3:54What an ice work. Yeah, you.
- 3:57Know that first one was quite airy.
- 4:00No, I don't think. It's quite quite big and Butch
- 4:02aren't. They yeah, I don't think there's
- 4:03a future in human Ice Warrior relationships outside of a Craig
- 4:07Hinton novel. Or Gary Russell comic strips.
- 4:10Oh really? Oh, was you talking about?
- 4:12Oh yeah. It's just it's Stacey, so party
- 4:14lucky it's not state that's it. It's in party.
- 4:17Lucky it's 1999. Well, look fellas, I mean, I'm.
- 4:21Riveted that we get to go and watch moving pictures.
- 4:23I do think episode 4 actually might be one of my favorites of
- 4:26the serial. It's got all that lovely stuff
- 4:28in the caves, isn't it? It's.
- 4:30It's so much better than two and three, just that those character
- 4:34escape. The lovely stuff in the lovely
- 4:37caves because for some reason you 2 don't know what good caves
- 4:40are Cough cough. Your Empress of Mars opinions
- 4:44cough cough. Your whole hungriest and cold
- 4:46blood opinions cough cough. I do like these caves though, I
- 4:50just don't like the ones from the Hungry Earth.
- 4:52They don't like cheap old jabalo.
- 4:54What about the Empress of Mars Cave?
- 4:57Oh yeah, they were pretty bad as well if I'm honest.
- 4:58When the 60s does it better? You know you're doing something
- 5:01wrong. Well to be fair, the 60 did do
- 5:06Doctor Who better because they did it with the second Doctor
- 5:08and no doctor has topped him since.
- 5:10Well, and also yes. I'm not going to.
- 5:13Go for that one, John. I will leave that one there.
- 5:17Also. The new series, of course, did
- 5:20the Great Intelligence and absolutely forgot to mention the
- 5:24the Yetis. Shocking.
- 5:30Eddie is just shaking. Eddie just.
- 5:34Are you over the shock here? No.
- 5:36No, I'm still counting the days. It's it was Muffet must ghost if
- 5:42I tell you from that point. You know, I tell you, you're
- 5:44counting the days that those yetis are going to appear.
- 5:47It's the same way Caroline Falls counting the days for her
- 5:49appearance at the end of The Reality Wars.
- 5:51Turn up on the cinema screen. What?
- 5:54Something that's never coming. That's right.
- 5:56Unfortunately, I think it might be the case with both if.
- 6:00It is then I will personally store into the BBC takeover
- 6:04Doctor Who, make every story have Yeti in them and I will not
- 6:07let them escape. But there is a lot of action in
- 6:13Episode 4. We do a lot of dashing around
- 6:15those snowy. Not for that.
- 6:17The mountain starts coming down, there's wolves attacking and
- 6:20things. It's all very exciting.
- 6:21You're. Promising us a good time, you
- 6:25Joe. I have.
- 6:26To say, I'll tell you what, count us in and let's go and see
- 6:29what we got out of school. My father counting us into the
- 6:33ice for his You acting as if he wants to watch it.
- 6:36I don't think he's got much choice.
- 6:40You wait till I'll wait to see what I'm rejecting you to next,
- 6:45right? Everybody ready in 54321?
- 6:53Don't. Lanel.
- 6:54Don't Lanel. Don't Lanel.
- 6:58John, you're going. To.
- 7:00Do. It often you hadn't pressed
- 7:01play. Did you forget to play?
- 7:04Did you forget to play? No, I had to just press mute on
- 7:09the thing. We're not that bad, you know?
- 7:13Well, Hermit. Tomorrow.
- 7:15One of you forgot. Forgot what?
- 7:18One of you forgot to play or did got delayed so you can't really
- 7:23be commenting. Yeah, you don't miss a trick.
- 7:26You do you. No, I remember.
- 7:30Oh, is that music? What the music we can't hear?
- 7:36Yeah, I love it though. Yeah, Jones versions are better.
- 7:40Don't worry. Don't you like the, the sort of
- 7:41the glacier that we get there, that lovely photograph.
- 7:44Yeah, the Stalag tights or? It's about.
- 7:47It's going to be. The UK in about 8 weeks time.
- 7:50Oh, is that right? Well, probably.
- 7:53Look what we did to the Earth. We've turned it into a load of
- 7:55snow. That's one thing I wish we got
- 8:00more of did. You see that it opened up on
- 8:03Victoria sniveling on the screen.
- 8:08That's just her entire time on. The Oh yes, you remember there's
- 8:12a great gun pointing her in the face shooter.
- 8:16Not yet. Oh, not yet.
- 8:18Not yet that. Would have been a great way for
- 8:22her to go though, don't you think?
- 8:23Being shot in the face. No, a great way for her to go
- 8:26would be to live her life safe and sound and for all her haters
- 8:30to suffer a painful and torturous death like this do.
- 8:33You know they are quite hairy, aren't they?
- 8:35Around the neck? Those eyes for.
- 8:37You and I know that's what you like.
- 8:39Well, I mean, look at them. It's a bit disturbing, isn't it?
- 8:43Oh, no, look, they're trying to talk to Victoria now.
- 8:45Now. Young lady, please tell us what
- 8:49engines do they have? And now, John, will you do
- 8:53Victoria's response? Again, This is why all Victoria
- 9:03hated her, to have a painful and torturous dare.
- 9:06I think. So oh, this is just gold.
- 9:11I mean it is like it. Is the equivalent of like abuse,
- 9:15right? Putting her through all this.
- 9:17Why do you think she leaves in Fury from the Deep?
- 9:20I would have gone before there they've.
- 9:22Sensibly. Very sensible.
- 9:23She's so. Anxious.
- 9:25Well to to be fair, do you think she'd have rather left on tell
- 9:29offs or in a monastery that had just been destroyed?
- 9:33Well, it's not. That far off to 1930 and no
- 9:361930? It's only, what, 67 years at a
- 9:38time? I've got a big people suggest,
- 9:41you know John, that maybe they should have just taken her
- 9:43somewhere safe after even love the Daleks.
- 9:46That might have been the best option for her.
- 9:49Well, Telf was probably safe outside of that tomb, yeah.
- 9:53Well, Perry's come in there in the future.
- 9:56Oh gosh, yeah. That makes it even more
- 9:58dangerous a natural life. You see the whopping great close
- 10:02up on the ice for you there, hissing away at this camera.
- 10:05That's really great. Derek Martinez does a great job
- 10:10with what he's got. Was that a compliment, John?
- 10:15But yeah, Derek Martins. Yeah, not for Brian Hales.
- 10:18Oh, here we go. You know how the music goes.
- 10:20Hey, it goes boop. Boop, boop.
- 10:22Boop, boop, boop, boop. Most Lego figure here it.
- 10:26Comes here it comes. Is there a Lego figure over the
- 10:30OS Warrior? You said you were going to find
- 10:32out. Oh, there is a Lego one.
- 10:34Yeah, there was a Lego one back in.
- 10:36It would be a massive missed opportunity considering they
- 10:38have Lego hands. Would you look at how well lit
- 10:41this cave is? Look at that.
- 10:43I would swear that was outside it's.
- 10:47A really nice. Set.
- 10:48Is it shot on film? It's really soft with picture
- 10:52policy. So this is what this is Ealing.
- 10:55Must be, yeah. Oh yeah, they froze.
- 10:58Yeah, they froze over the entire studio.
- 11:01It's very funny, Eddie. It's the really smiley Ice
- 11:04Warrior that comes after her. He's so happy to be hunting her
- 11:06down. He's just so happy to see one of
- 11:09the best companions. Oh, is that what it?
- 11:12Is be my friend. Be my friend.
- 11:15Yeah, he's just so happy to see her because she's such, he's
- 11:18such a nice person. And I'm going to teach you now
- 11:20about telephones. All right?
- 11:21You see what the doctor's doing there, sort of dialing away on
- 11:23the thing. Now, my grandmother used to have
- 11:25a telephone where it was a big chunky one with one of those
- 11:28dials on it. Honestly, if you if you was in
- 11:31an emergency, you have to dial 999.
- 11:33You have to take it all the way around like he was doing there.
- 11:36I mean, a lot of people died, Yeah.
- 11:41Yeah, frankly, your whole house could have been down in that
- 11:44time. Honest to God, if you've got to
- 11:46do yes. If you've got to do a six.
- 11:48Digit number I. Mean you feel like you're there
- 11:50half your life, God. Yeah.
- 11:55Now, what's the doctor taking across there?
- 11:57Ammonium sulfide? What's?
- 11:59That no. It's a chemical, I presume.
- 12:03Is it a stink? Bomb chiefly.
- 12:06Nudge him with a hydrogen. That's what it is.
- 12:09What are you, John? What a stink bomb.
- 12:12So you're implying you're implying he's going he's going
- 12:14to hit the Ice Warriors for the Heaven Sent bomb?
- 12:17Or the bombs from the time warrior.
- 12:20Do you remember the ones he loves his over there?
- 12:22Oh yeah. Over.
- 12:24The walls. Frankly, no, I don't.
- 12:27Shocking. So is he going?
- 12:29He's going to the Ice Warrior ship and he's going to use
- 12:31weapons to kill them. Is that right?
- 12:34He never uses guns. He never used anything else is
- 12:38fair game though. He never uses guns unless it's
- 12:42plot convenient. It's a second Doctor.
- 12:44He doesn't mind off in. Whichever little monster he
- 12:47comes up against. You know he's going to send them
- 12:50into the Suns next time he sees them.
- 12:52It's quite plot convenient. Quite a lot.
- 12:54Then Eddie because he does use weapons quite a lot.
- 12:59Now I don't use guns, but my companions can.
- 13:02Draw your attention, please, to Miss Garrett's attire now.
- 13:07I don't think that's particularly appropriate for a
- 13:09professional environment. Do.
- 13:12You no. John.
- 13:17It's. More.
- 13:20It's more appropriate for a sexy fashion show.
- 13:23Eddie, honestly, you better tell your mother when you're done,
- 13:25all right? He's been admiring Miss Garrett
- 13:27on this call. Me.
- 13:30Yes. Don't you tell me you're above
- 13:33dubbing him in. Oh no.
- 13:35I thought you said I was admiring her.
- 13:37First thing he does. No, your father I'd share what
- 13:43she she came along to one of those phantom photo shoots.
- 13:47You know of that weird church, all that they do.
- 13:50You ever been to any of those? No, I've never been the phantom
- 13:53ones. I've done the Riverside.
- 13:54Stuff. They're very strange.
- 13:56I mean, they're in this weird church all in the middle of
- 13:58Chiswick somewhere when they've only got like baby chairs
- 14:02because it's like a. Like a nursery school is it?
- 14:05Yeah, and so you'll have to stand around with the
- 14:08celebrities anyway. Miss Garrett was there, the
- 14:09actress, and it was sort of just out of COVID time.
- 14:13So she. Wouldn't sit near anyone so she
- 14:15was having photographs. Done where she was, sort of
- 14:18really. Close to the camera.
- 14:19And then they was putting the person next to her in averted
- 14:22commas right at the back of the room.
- 14:24It's the weirdest photographs you've ever seen.
- 14:27Did you go there? I mean, Mama paid for it.
- 14:30He pays for all these bloody Pete nobodies to have pictures
- 14:33with him. Oh, run, Victoria, run.
- 14:38Oh my God. Oh.
- 14:41That does look a bit of. Plastic.
- 14:42That's a bit the way it moves, isn't it?
- 14:46But that bit was quite good. Watch when this ice water comes
- 14:50through. Now it takes the whole bloody
- 14:51wall out with him. Great.
- 14:54Yeah. Of course, Victoria lets out an
- 14:57ear. Piercer as he comes through.
- 15:00Victoria goes back. Why the freaking hell does she
- 15:03go back? Oh, she's so stupid, isn't she?
- 15:06Run away, Vic. Bullying innocent young
- 15:11companions. Yeah, well, it's no good.
- 15:13To bully the ones that can fight back, you may as well do it to
- 15:16the ones that can't. Exactly.
- 15:18What? So what?
- 15:20And you're saying bullying Amy Pond's good?
- 15:22Well, she no, she'd fight back. She's.
- 15:25Taller than. To be fair Eddie, she'd floor me
- 15:28in 2 seconds. Flat, I think.
- 15:33Have you met many Scots? They're absolutely terrified,
- 15:37you know? We've, well we've, we did stay
- 15:43up in Scotland early this year. Whereabouts.
- 15:49Whereabouts. I don't know, off Glasgow, OK.
- 15:54Because we went up there and we saw a few police boxes with all
- 15:57cops are bastards on them. Was that what it said on it?
- 16:01Yeah, a cab. All cops.
- 16:03Straight down there. Did you see that police box
- 16:05that's been turned into sort of a coffee bar?
- 16:08I think that was in Edinburgh. No, no, because Edinburgh was
- 16:14three years ago when I think so. No, Edinburgh was.
- 16:17Edinburgh was 2021. Now there.
- 16:20You go four years. Unthinkable as it may be fellas,
- 16:24we barely spoke about Jamie in the first 3 episodes.
- 16:28Now, can I ask you both please, your opinion of Jamie?
- 16:31I didn't realize he wasn't a Scottish until last year.
- 16:35What you were convinced by the? Accident.
- 16:36No, he didn't. Yeah.
- 16:38It's pretty. Actually even one of my friends
- 16:41who would you just finished watching the 2nd Doctor era.
- 16:44I literally just had to tell them that he wasn't actually
- 16:46Scottish and they were like what the fuck?
- 16:49Do you like him as a companion though?
- 16:51Yeah, he's the only reason Victoria isn't the best Second
- 16:55Doctor companion. Oh, what about?
- 16:57Zoe we that's you know, are you saying that so he's.
- 17:03You know you've met Wendy Pampriere and.
- 17:05I've also met Fraser Hunt. Yeah.
- 17:09Have you met them? Together they're so.
- 17:10Bitchy when they're together. Oh yeah, I had a picture of them
- 17:12together. Oh, you did.
- 17:14Oh, lovely. I can only imagine.
- 17:18You know that when Doctor Who's celebrities meet you, Eddie,
- 17:20they just adore you. Well, yeah, because again, when
- 17:25I was a baby, I was a sexy magnet 10.
- 17:28Years. Ago it's like, it's like every,
- 17:32every time we're an event in Katie Manning, Serial always
- 17:34goes here and she'll she's always delighted to see me.
- 17:38What do you imagine? But she's mad, and now we know
- 17:40she's mad. Well, she, I mean she is mad.
- 17:44Do you imagine the design of the Ice Warriors is all about?
- 17:47Is it supposed to be like a turtle?
- 17:49Yeah, it's yes. Well, turtles aren't from miles,
- 17:53are they? Or from ice.
- 17:55But like the shell, You know, the big shell, Yeah.
- 17:58Or is it a crocodile? I don't know.
- 18:00It looks more crocodiles and turtley.
- 18:03Well, we know that it's armour now, obviously, so they can get
- 18:08out of it. So they're just.
- 18:11Before, you know, we were exposed to the dismal CGI of
- 18:15Cold War. Did you imagine?
- 18:17Cold War's a bad episode. I mean, I you can infer that
- 18:22from what I just said, yes, fuck off then.
- 18:24It's terrible. It's so boring.
- 18:28So anyway, sorry, did you think that was just what they looked
- 18:32like then with the helmets on like that?
- 18:34That was part of their face. Well.
- 18:37I wouldn't have imagined it because I I wouldn't have
- 18:42imagined that at birth their mothers just lay out a giant
- 18:46fucking shell. What happens with a turtle after
- 18:50they get their shell? They lay back.
- 18:53But surely a turtle was born with a shell, isn't it?
- 18:56No, I think turtles. No, I might be thinking of
- 19:00snails that go find. Oh, snails definitely aren't.
- 19:03Yeah, the snail's like a slug, isn't it?
- 19:05The finds a shit. Yeah, and I this, it's giving me
- 19:08flashbacks. At the time, I was going to open
- 19:09a open one of the cabinets in the kitchen to get to get my
- 19:13breakfast. And then there was a slug on it.
- 19:14And I didn't realize. So I touched a slug and Needless
- 19:17to say I nearly burnt my hand off because I would not feel
- 19:20clean having my hands clean about 30 times.
- 19:24Oh, slug is being useful. Very useful as ever.
- 19:28Useful as a slug less. Help.
- 19:30Somebody help me. Let's say there is.
- 19:35There is one moment in this episode, though, where when I
- 19:38watched it back, I was, I felt genuinely anxious for her.
- 19:42When she's dragged into the ship towards the end of this episode
- 19:46and she screams out, you're not going to kill me, are you?
- 19:49And I thought, wow, she really thinks she's going to die.
- 19:52In that scene, like, please, Victoria, tell them you've had
- 19:56enough. What, you think she can just go
- 20:00up to the ice forest and say I've had enough and they'll go
- 20:02all right, let you. Go I mean the doctor at the end
- 20:04of the story like. Please just tell him like enough
- 20:07now. You think Victoria would like to
- 20:09go and stay in that sort of area where?
- 20:14Why not? Why not?
- 20:15Why not? We could leave.
- 20:16Move in with leader Clint and Penley.
- 20:18You know that could be her two dads.
- 20:21Oh, that. 'D be beautiful, wouldn't it?
- 20:25Frankly, I think I prefer her fear from the depending.
- 20:29Yeah. Now what is occurring here with
- 20:32these two hairy men, Penley and Storr?
- 20:35I think we we made a. Few of you be paying attention
- 20:37to that. Well, we know what's going on
- 20:41there. And, and Jamie.
- 20:42And let's face it, Jamie isn't the straightest guy ever.
- 20:45Look, come on. But you think is happening here.
- 20:49Well, Fraser Hines has. Been on the fish?
- 20:51Father Fraser Hines has been on Twitter and denied the Doctor
- 20:54and Jamie shit. He's denied that they have a
- 20:58shit. No, he's denied their ship like
- 21:02you know how. Oh shit, sorry, Ship.
- 21:05Yes, like, well, yeah, of course he's going to say that.
- 21:09He's the most heterosexual man on the planet.
- 21:11Yeah, but but really they're. Why did you find out the hard
- 21:14way? No.
- 21:16I just I love it when they hold hands and two.
- 21:18Of the side men though, it's very funny.
- 21:20Oh, it's gorgeous. Yeah.
- 21:21Well, no one knew that when it came back.
- 21:23And it's like, that's genius. Did you see that special effect
- 21:26then? That was a bit unfortunate.
- 21:27Someone sort of pulled. Together, the two areas of the
- 21:30ceiling and all the snow fell through the middle.
- 21:32Yeah, I did and. Oh this is great, where the
- 21:35doctor meets Penley. Me, yes.
- 21:38In the in the caves, it sounds attractive.
- 21:41He's 2 good actors. He's 2 great actors here of
- 21:45Peter Salas and Patrick Trouten. I mean, come on, that's.
- 21:48Can you imagine Patrick Trouten in Wallace and Gromit?
- 21:51Yeah. Oh, definitely.
- 21:53Your God, yes. Shane was a bit too dead to be
- 21:55in it. Yeah, I hear that does cramp
- 21:58your performance style. Yes, but he's not dead when he
- 22:02made this, though. He's very good in a minute.
- 22:05It goes to Victoria. You know, after she stops.
- 22:08Sniveling. Come on, Victoria.
- 22:10Blow, blow, you know. No, no, I don't mean it like
- 22:13that, John. He's going to distract them, you
- 22:15know? Snivel a bit.
- 22:17That means I like the fact that they lean into it a bit.
- 22:20Snivel on it. I can't say.
- 22:24Anything without you people taking it as rude.
- 22:28Oh, yeah. But then again, that's because
- 22:29we know you. That's.
- 22:30Right. Disturbingly so, the pair.
- 22:33Of you, yeah. And what?
- 22:36So hang on, did the whole ceiling fall on the ass for his
- 22:39head? Yeah.
- 22:41He's dead now then. Looks like it.
- 22:44So Victoria is a murderous then? Yeah, she's learned it from the
- 22:48doctor. You know she knows how to carry
- 22:50on. Oh I love this.
- 22:53You think she's You think she's an innocent girl who will scream
- 22:56for her life? Think again.
- 22:58She will scream you to death. Literally do.
- 23:01You remember. When she does in the last
- 23:03episode. Yeah, 2 bit of sidemen.
- 23:05She shoots that sideman straight away first time.
- 23:10Don't. Don't mess around.
- 23:11With this is all she. Won't she won't hesitate.
- 23:15This is all the front. It's a bit like Nissan, you
- 23:17know, they think they're really innocent and then you turn your
- 23:20back on this son. She's got a bloody gun in around
- 23:22taking out loads of guards on Gallifrey and things.
- 23:24Oh God. You watch her with an eye on
- 23:26Bonder. Oh damn.
- 23:28God, with that eye on Bonder, she takes out all those.
- 23:32What they call fosters in the Grove.
- 23:35Yeah, that's it. The Fosters on trial.
- 23:37They are imposing though, the Ice Warriors, aren't they?
- 23:39Like they're they're really tall and the silhouette is quiet.
- 23:43Because you had both of bristles what 6 foot 66 foot 7 and the
- 23:47all the regulars and all these actors are tight are actually a
- 23:51shorter statue, shall we say. So they're all 5 foot mid 5 foot
- 23:55type thing. So they are deliberately
- 23:57important. It's it's one of those really
- 23:59nice cheap tricks, but it's nice.
- 24:01It works really kind of thought through production.
- 24:04I think, and please save the date, everybody.
- 24:07When I said this, I think Stephen Moffy is right that
- 24:11there was no place for the ice. Warriors in the new.
- 24:14Series like they are cumbersome, they are clunky, they.
- 24:18Yeah, but they look awesome. They do look great, but you
- 24:21can't, I mean none of those action sequence are especially
- 24:24dynamic they're. In load things down.
- 24:27Hardly. Did you not see like every way
- 24:30the shot and Cold War of the Ice Warrior faced him?
- 24:32The lighting there, it's fucking gorgeous.
- 24:34But he's not moving very fast because he can't.
- 24:39Can't see where he's going for God's sake.
- 24:41But here, here, they're treated like characters, aren't they?
- 24:44They've got personalities, they've got names.
- 24:48They do an Empress of Mars as well Friday.
- 24:51Oh, I. Do like the woman an Empress.
- 24:52Of Mars. Actually, she's pretty.
- 24:54Of course she did. Yes, she's.
- 24:57Got like diamond teeth, hasn't she?
- 24:59Yeah, you forget. You forget that Friday has
- 25:01personality. Yeah, What was that?
- 25:04Is that the? Is that Nicholas Briggs?
- 25:07What? What?
- 25:08Here. This is Nicholas Briggs.
- 25:10Yeah, it is. No, the one in the one in
- 25:12Empress of Miles. Well, I mean, I wouldn't be
- 25:14surprised. I think it.
- 25:15Probably is. But yes, this is also Nicholas
- 25:17Briggs here in 1967, performing as an infant child.
- 25:21This is so great. Look, he thinks he's going to,
- 25:24he's going to like, convince the Ice Warriors to take on the base
- 25:27and they just murder him in cold blood.
- 25:30They murder him in what? In cold blood, well, in hot.
- 25:34Blood, actually. So yeah.
- 25:36Yeah, they murder him in an amazing series 5 episode.
- 25:40No. 7 and terrible. Joe's not wrong there.
- 25:46Come on. Do these films not learn their
- 25:50lessons from Tomb of the Cybermen?
- 25:52I want to help a villain get did.
- 25:55They just high five. They just high five, yeah.
- 25:58Of course they did, yeah. Yeah, we got one.
- 26:01We killed that peasant. Yes, they've got great.
- 26:04Personalities and did. You hear when?
- 26:07Stall was saying to Victoria like, you know.
- 26:10Oh, where are? They the the Ice Warriors, where
- 26:12are they? And she goes.
- 26:13Why? Why do you?
- 26:14Want to see them? Well, they're going to attack
- 26:15the base. And she goes, is that what you
- 26:17want? Well, I think that's.
- 26:18Wicked, she goes. It's a good thing it's not ACE
- 26:23there because if you if it was interpreted in ACE context, I.
- 26:28Fear, you know, Eddie, if Ace was here, then the entire.
- 26:31Mountain would have been destroyed by now.
- 26:33Yeah, I think the I charge with them one episode long.
- 26:37Ace would have sorted it inside 10 minutes flat.
- 26:40Blow back up, off we go. Boom.
- 26:42Tell me if I'm mad, John, but is that the same staircase as in
- 26:45the Doctor's lab in the 3rd Doctor's era?
- 26:48I think it might. Be it does look exactly that
- 26:51staircase, it's got to be the second.
- 26:54Well they used to have someone on the top of the pop set as
- 26:56well, so it could be a standard thing they had around.
- 26:59Well, so you're telling me the top of the pops next from the
- 27:02doctor's lab? They were like, yo doctor, can
- 27:05we just borrow this for this? Charge the other way round.
- 27:08It's the BBC prop storage. Oh, look how the Doctor looks
- 27:14after Jamie. Yeah, see, I don't think it's a.
- 27:17Bromance. Loving now you behave yourself.
- 27:19Romantic. No, it's just lovely.
- 27:22It's paternal bromance. It's a bromance.
- 27:25Gorgeous. Yeah, yeah, because I'm sure
- 27:27that Jamie would want to date someone who's like 4 centuries
- 27:30older than him. Well, Rose Tyler did.
- 27:34And do you see what she got for that and then?
- 27:36She got on this. She got and do you see what they
- 27:38got for that? Clara Jasmine can't it?
- 27:43And do you see what? And do you see what happened to
- 27:45Yaz? She got dumped.
- 27:47And you? See what happened to Amy?
- 27:49She jumped off a building and committed suicide.
- 27:53And do you see what happened? Do you see what happened to
- 27:55Rose? She fell into a very large white
- 27:58pool that I will not refer to. Amy literally said I just, I'm
- 28:02sorry I can't act with Matt Smith anymore and threw herself
- 28:05straight off that roof. And that well too.
- 28:08Have you not seen an interview? She said she would only come
- 28:10back if it was Matt Smith, not the Darfol.
- 28:13Well, that ain't going to happen, is it?
- 28:16She's paid way too much to come back to doctor.
- 28:18Yeah. She's doing Marvel Movies Now,
- 28:20for God's sakes. Yeah, and I'm sure that's why
- 28:23you would love to watch them. Oh, look at this.
- 28:27It's the doctors on the screen. Here we go, Clint, old chap.
- 28:30I'm going in. It's great if if it is a little
- 28:35bit too. Serious Trouten's always there
- 28:37to provide a laugh or two. Yeah, and then if it's and then
- 28:40if it's eventually silly, Trout's always here to provide a
- 28:43dark moment or two. Doesn't he say in a minute?
- 28:46Nope. I'm only going to talk to you
- 28:47face to face. And they go, we're fine, we're
- 28:49going to let the air out and. We're going to die.
- 28:53Imagine just walking under there and then and then someone from
- 28:56the BBC just go and shakes a ton of like white dust over you, I
- 29:00mean. That is quite a big set again,
- 29:04isn't it? I don't know if it convinces as
- 29:06the exterior of a spaceship, but that's a big gum isn't?
- 29:12It he's looking at dead in the face.
- 29:14Hang on, what does that do? It looks like a needle.
- 29:20I am I. Was it blast?
- 29:26No, no, it just sticks out to look frightening.
- 29:30John, are you looking? To take my crown.
- 29:32In this podcast. What are you?
- 29:36Are you playing that he? Are you playing that he should
- 29:39be the one to take over. No, just that his mind's turned
- 29:43to filth, Eddie. It's always been filthy.
- 29:47Look at look at these extreme close-ups.
- 29:49Of the ice Warrior mouth I just love all of this it's.
- 29:54A great yeah, that plus one Trenton as well.
- 29:58And he and he keeps it interesting.
- 30:00And he's sort of. Stubborn until he realizes in
- 30:02danger, and then he does his sort of Oh my word, so face.
- 30:07Fucker. Yeah, Eddie, notice how much
- 30:10enjoyment we're getting from this episode.
- 30:15Notice how much enjoyment my father's giving.
- 30:17It actually he is, isn't he? I have noticed that.
- 30:20It's it's such a relief after those last two episodes.
- 30:24After after a few weeks then. Something's happening.
- 30:29Oh my God. So hang on all.
- 30:31The questions are happening. Goes out of that room.
- 30:33Is he going to explode like a big melon?
- 30:35He probably. Would, yeah.
- 30:37I honestly. As soon as you breathe in, it'd.
- 30:40Be like, you know what I have to say?
- 30:42I have to say the part four comment.
- 30:45Oh yes, please. Fraser Gregory himself.
- 30:48Fraser Gregory, champion done, who didn't put this on his big
- 30:52list of 60. Oh, and he's the one that bangs
- 30:55on about it all. The time as well have you?
- 30:57Have you been had a look through that?
- 30:58I'm disappointed. I've been having look through
- 31:01it's not there. No.
- 31:02Have you seen that anyway? The comment is it's got a bear
- 31:06in it. An actual fucking bear.
- 31:09None of your stick footage here. Let's bring an actual bear onto
- 31:12set, let it wander around and film it for a bit.
- 31:15Because this season is dull. Yeah, just does the same thing
- 31:18over and over. Yeah, my ass.
- 31:21This just highlights what a bold, ambitious and visually
- 31:23stunning story this is. I mean, I think he's right about
- 31:28the bear. Like they didn't.
- 31:29Oh yeah, definitely. It's stock footage though,
- 31:31right? I thought it was.
- 31:34Is there a bear in the studio? And he's rushed out a bear in
- 31:37the. Studio.
- 31:38I. Know safety standards?
- 31:40Relax. But.
- 31:42I'm fine enough. He's also right about Season 5
- 31:45being a good season. Well, who said Season 5 wasn't a
- 31:48good season? My father.
- 31:50Oh, all right. He thinks it's like he likes
- 31:54season 4 and season 6, and he thinks season 5 is one of the
- 31:56worst seasons ever. Meanwhile, it is my fifth
- 31:59favorite season of all time. Individually, I think the
- 32:02stories all have merit. I just think if you watch them
- 32:05back-to-back. You're basically like I did.
- 32:08The same story over and over again.
- 32:10Yeah, it's I'm not big on the base under siege type story, so.
- 32:14Oh yeah, but that's because you're shit so.
- 32:17What, John? You don't like Terror of the
- 32:19Vervoids? You don't like the impossible
- 32:21fan of? Christie.
- 32:22Yeah, Fuzzy, you don't like Trevor of the Vervoids?
- 32:25Or the second best up to who story ever made.
- 32:28Second best up to who story ever made.
- 32:30Yeah, the Impossible Planet. That's fine, that's done well.
- 32:33I hadn't seen one for about a new one for whatever it was 20,
- 32:3920 odd years so. I would make a case.
- 32:42I would make a case that the base under siege should be done
- 32:48every generation you know when. There's a new production team
- 32:51and when there are new. Production techniques in place
- 32:54and as things get better so we can see that that sort of format
- 32:57done in different ways. I would maybe suggest you
- 33:00shouldn't do 6 on the bounce. Yes, exactly that.
- 33:05And 2A. Season at most. 2A season, yeah,
- 33:08would be perfect. I mean, it's 2.
- 33:11Each other in rooms. Just big rooms, in big
- 33:16scientific sets, which are quite dull usually.
- 33:19Not in this one, I admit. Not in the Ice Warriors.
- 33:22But no way you can't. You complement it.
- 33:24You complemented it. That's amazing.
- 33:26We've done it quite a lot in this episode.
- 33:30Yeah, well. Should we see if he's gonna
- 33:32continue to compliment as we head on into Episode 5?
- 33:36And shall we see if I remain as quiet as I have been?
- 33:40I sincerely doubt it.
