- 0:12Speaker: And he had throw up on his shirt
- 0:14Speaker: as his feet and regurgitation or
- 0:16Speaker: something.
- 0:17Speaker: So I'm like, I'm panicking and I'm shaking him.
- 0:19Speaker: And I mean, I could have picked him up with one hand.

- 1:00Speaker: Matt Deig.
- 1:05Speaker: Welcome to episode thirteen.
- 1:07Speaker: We're going to be talking about the murder of fifty year old
- 1:10Speaker: Troy Dwayne Smith, who was shot in the back of his head while he
- 1:14Speaker: sat in his own couch in his own apartment on the five hundred
- 1:18Speaker: block of South New York Avenue in Evansville, Indiana, on May
- 1:21Speaker: twenty fourth, twenty twenty.
- 1:24Speaker: His brother, Taran, found his body.
- 1:28Speaker: By all accounts, Troy was a nice, quiet guy.
- 1:32Speaker: He had studied mechanical engineering at ITT Technical
- 1:35Speaker: Institute and was working at Tri-State Resource Recovery.
- 1:39Speaker: Initially, this case was classified as an overdose, so
- 1:42Speaker: there was really no investigation into, you know, a
- 1:46Speaker: murder for several weeks.
- 1:47Speaker: Once a coroner and the detectives figure out that he
- 1:50Speaker: was actually shot in the head.
- 1:52Speaker: Several weeks had passed.
- 1:55Speaker: A reporter noticed that there
- 1:56Speaker: was a discrepancy in the police
- 1:58Speaker: reportings of homicides and
- 2:00Speaker: questioned the police about the
- 2:02Speaker: discrepancy.
- 2:03Speaker: And that's when it came forward that Troy was actually a
- 2:06Speaker: homicide victim versus natural causes or overdose.
- 2:10Speaker: And the case just kind of slipped through the cracks as
- 2:13Speaker: far as the media went.
- 2:14Speaker: And it's just it's not been very public.
- 2:17Speaker: And there are just a few
- 2:18Speaker: articles about the murder to be
- 2:19Speaker: found.
- 2:20Speaker: And of course, this was during the beginning of Covid.
- 2:23Speaker: So that story was probably on everyone's mind.
- 2:26Speaker: And it's just an unfortunate situation where this particular
- 2:30Speaker: murder did not have a lot of attention on it.
- 2:34Speaker: And I've been talking to Troy's
- 2:36Speaker: siblings, Tamara and Tehran, and
- 2:40Speaker: Tehran agreed to talk about his
- 2:42Speaker: perspective in the story, since
- 2:43Speaker: he definitely has a
- 2:44Speaker: unfortunately unique perspective
- 2:46Speaker: since he's the one who found his
- 2:47Speaker: brother's body.
- 2:49Speaker: And so this is Tehran's story.
- 2:53Speaker: It was a holiday, and I was at a
- 2:54Speaker: little get together, and next
- 2:56Speaker: thing you know, I I get a phone
- 2:57Speaker: call from two people that used
- 3:00Speaker: to be around my brother all the
- 3:01Speaker: time, and they're with my
- 3:02Speaker: brother, like at least, you
- 3:03Speaker: know, three or four times out of
- 3:05Speaker: the week.
- 3:05Speaker: So I get a call from him saying,
- 3:07Speaker: have you heard from your
- 3:08Speaker: brother?
- 3:08Speaker: And I was like, I just talked to him another night.
- 3:10Speaker: But that was the last time I talked to him.
- 3:12Speaker: But I called him a couple of
- 3:14Speaker: days on his phone that day and,
- 3:15Speaker: uh, he wasn't answering and he
- 3:17Speaker: was going straight to voicemail
- 3:18Speaker: and everything.
- 3:19Speaker: So I said, that's not it's not like him.
- 3:21Speaker: So when these two people would call me, I rushed over there.
- 3:25Speaker: They, they said they were over at my brother's apartment, which
- 3:28Speaker: used to be my old apartment.
- 3:29Speaker: I let my brother stay there and take it over.
- 3:31Speaker: So this, uh, female friend of
- 3:34Speaker: his acquaintance that called me
- 3:36Speaker: and said that, uh, she was
- 3:37Speaker: knocking on the door and, uh,
- 3:38Speaker: she heard his TV on heard, uh,
- 3:41Speaker: you know, music playing and
- 3:42Speaker: everything, but, uh, the screen
- 3:43Speaker: door was locked, which is not
- 3:45Speaker: normal.
- 3:45Speaker: So I get over there and, um,
- 3:48Speaker: we're both there and, um, a
- 3:50Speaker: friend, another friend of my
- 3:51Speaker: brother's, this guy was there,
- 3:53Speaker: so they're there and I get there
- 3:54Speaker: and I told him, I said, well,
- 3:56Speaker: the door is locked, so we're
- 3:58Speaker: banging and banging and no
- 3:59Speaker: answer.
- 3:59Speaker: So I asked him.
- 4:00Speaker: I said, well, does anyone have like a screwdriver?
- 4:02Speaker: Because it's my old apartment
- 4:03Speaker: and I know how to kind of pry it
- 4:05Speaker: open.
- 4:05Speaker: So I went to pry it open and when I kicked the door in.
- 4:08Speaker: Next thing you know was all you seen was my brother, and he was
- 4:11Speaker: slumped over on the couch.
- 4:13Speaker: And I mean, blood just coming from everywhere, from his mouth,
- 4:16Speaker: nose, ears, eyes.
- 4:18Speaker: And he had throw up on his shirt
- 4:20Speaker: as his feet had Gerd or
- 4:22Speaker: something.
- 4:22Speaker: So I'm like, I'm panicking and I'm shaking him.
- 4:25Speaker: And I mean, I could have picked him up with one hand.
- 4:26Speaker: He was stiff like a mummy.
- 4:28Speaker: So I said he had had to been sitting there for a minute.
- 4:30Speaker: So call nine hundred eleven right away and they get there.
- 4:33Speaker: Police get there and they have us all get out of the the house
- 4:37Speaker: and, uh, corner paramedics come.
- 4:39Speaker: So they rule it as if, uh, he had took something or, uh, I had
- 4:44Speaker: a bad reaction or something.
- 4:45Speaker: I'm like, no, there's no way.
- 4:46Speaker: There's too much blood and everything.
- 4:48Speaker: And, you know, so so I called family members, my sister, my
- 4:52Speaker: mom, everybody gets there.
- 4:54Speaker: and corners rule it as that.
- 4:55Speaker: So after that, you know, me and
- 4:57Speaker: my mom and sister and everybody,
- 4:59Speaker: we kind of get ourselves
- 5:00Speaker: together and we just get some of
- 5:01Speaker: the stuff out of the apartment
- 5:02Speaker: that was in there and
- 5:03Speaker: everything.
- 5:04Speaker: At this point, you know, we're contaminating everything.
- 5:06Speaker: We're touching as many people in and out of the apartment, right?
- 5:09Speaker: So a week or two goes by and my sister calls me like, get over
- 5:13Speaker: to your apartment.
- 5:14Speaker: Um, the police and sheriff and everyone's around and we get
- 5:17Speaker: over there and they have it taped off and everything and
- 5:19Speaker: like, as if it's a crime scene.
- 5:21Speaker: So I'm like, this is weird.
- 5:22Speaker: So, uh, and then, you know, the detectives pulled me and my
- 5:25Speaker: sister in the car and they're like, we did the autopsy and we
- 5:28Speaker: found gunshot wounds to the back of his head.
- 5:30Speaker: So I was like, okay, you know,
- 5:32Speaker: with so much blood on him, I
- 5:33Speaker: would have never known at the
- 5:34Speaker: time, which was weird to me, but
- 5:36Speaker: I knew it had to be like foul
- 5:37Speaker: play involved.
- 5:39Speaker: That was the whole topic.
- 5:40Speaker: But the thing to me was that the
- 5:42Speaker: two people that were there, they
- 5:44Speaker: called me at the time, um, we're
- 5:46Speaker: always around my brother and I
- 5:47Speaker: know I thought it was mighty
- 5:48Speaker: fishy that they call me and come
- 5:50Speaker: to find out, this female
- 5:52Speaker: companion, a friend of his so
- 5:53Speaker: called, was with him the day
- 5:55Speaker: before.
- 5:56Speaker: Which is word to me.
- 5:58Speaker: And all of a sudden, you know, you call me.
- 6:00Speaker: It was it to me.
- 6:01Speaker: It was if they wanted me to come and find him.
- 6:04Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 6:05Speaker: And what I hear on this, you know, the streets talk.
- 6:08Speaker: And from people that I know that were in circles with my brother
- 6:11Speaker: and stuff, come to tell me to find out that they believe that,
- 6:15Speaker: um, the two people were in that house earlier, something went
- 6:18Speaker: wrong and then they had the nerve to call me as if they
- 6:22Speaker: weren't ever in there.
- 6:23Speaker: You knocked the door and someone
- 6:25Speaker: had locked that door on the way
- 6:26Speaker: out to make it seem like my
- 6:28Speaker: brother had locked it and he was
- 6:29Speaker: in there.
- 6:29Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 6:30Speaker: And it had to be someone my
- 6:32Speaker: brother knew, because the
- 6:33Speaker: bullets were back to the back of
- 6:35Speaker: the head, and no one's going to
- 6:36Speaker: let anybody come over and stand
- 6:37Speaker: over him, shoot him in the back
- 6:38Speaker: of the head, you know what I
- 6:39Speaker: mean?
- 6:40Speaker: And he hadn't been off the grid for very long when they called
- 6:43Speaker: you to say, hey, I'm worried because you said the day before,
- 6:46Speaker: you know, you guys were.
- 6:47Speaker: So it's not like he was gone for weeks or something.
- 6:49Speaker: And I'm like, hey, you better go over and check on him.
- 6:51Speaker: That's definitely very strange.
- 6:52Speaker: Yeah, it was just an overnight thing.
- 6:54Speaker: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker: Have the investigator.
- 6:56Speaker: Have you been in touch with the detective?
- 6:58Speaker: Have they been keeping you in the loop?
- 6:59Speaker: No. What's weird about the detective is my mom.
- 7:02Speaker: She works downtown.
- 7:03Speaker: She was working downtown in the prosecutor's office in different
- 7:06Speaker: areas down there.
- 7:07Speaker: But she retired now, so she's been away.
- 7:09Speaker: And there was two detectives on this case.
- 7:12Speaker: The first detective he was keeping in good contact with us
- 7:15Speaker: and everything, but he had got promoted and took over another
- 7:18Speaker: woman who was missing in Evansville named Donnetta
- 7:21Speaker: Wilkinson or something.
- 7:22Speaker: It was all over Evansville.
- 7:24Speaker: So he went to that case.
- 7:25Speaker: So my brother, my brother's
- 7:26Speaker: case, got put to this other new
- 7:29Speaker: detective.
- 7:29Speaker: His last name is McCormick.
- 7:31Speaker: So this McCormick guy, when he
- 7:33Speaker: when he first took over the case
- 7:34Speaker: was called.
- 7:35Speaker: This came in contact with he said he was doing what he could
- 7:37Speaker: and he was still investigating.
- 7:39Speaker: And yet on top of this, you know, my mom put out a five
- 7:41Speaker: thousand dollars reward to anyone who had any information.
- 7:45Speaker: So after that, after a week or two went by, it was dry.
- 7:48Speaker: No. No contact from the detective.
- 7:50Speaker: Nothing.
- 7:51Speaker: You know, we hear nothing.
- 7:52Speaker: So we're thinking, man, maybe it's a cold case.
- 7:55Speaker: Not just last Friday when I got off work, did this detective
- 8:00Speaker: call me and say that the case was not closed?
- 8:03Speaker: He's still looking into it, and
- 8:05Speaker: he's trying to figure out some
- 8:06Speaker: more information.
- 8:07Speaker: And he's got a new, uh, type of, uh, Google, uh, research where
- 8:11Speaker: he can go and look to see what my brother's phone was last
- 8:14Speaker: recorded with cell towers and this and that.
- 8:16Speaker: But the only reason he called me is because me and my sister had
- 8:20Speaker: contacted, uh, a cousin of ours that is in, um, has a lot to do
- 8:24Speaker: with like, uh, the downtown.
- 8:26Speaker: Uh, she's, she's like real known in politics and stuff.
- 8:28Speaker: So she got Ahold of the Billy
- 8:30Speaker: Baldwin, the police, um, captain
- 8:32Speaker: in Evansville, and told him,
- 8:33Speaker: well, this detective is not
- 8:35Speaker: getting Ahold of, uh, a family
- 8:36Speaker: member.
- 8:37Speaker: And they're, they're not knowing what's going on.
- 8:39Speaker: And, uh, it's, it's, we, I don't know if it's a cold case or
- 8:42Speaker: what's going on.
- 8:42Speaker: So not just this Friday, he called me and contacted me and
- 8:46Speaker: said that, uh, he's going to be on vacation for a whole month
- 8:50Speaker: this month, and when he does get back from vacation, he wants to
- 8:53Speaker: set up a meeting with me, my sister, and my mom.
- 8:56Speaker: I thought that was mighty odd
- 8:57Speaker: for you just now to get back to
- 8:59Speaker: us.
- 8:59Speaker: Yeah, the timing is definitely strange, but at least I guess
- 9:01Speaker: it's a good thing that he's at least, you know, putting more
- 9:04Speaker: attention on it.
- 9:05Speaker: Um. All right.
- 9:06Speaker: Have has he looked into the two.
- 9:09Speaker: I mean obviously I think they've looked into the suspects, the
- 9:11Speaker: two people who you know, you mentioned that were in the, uh,
- 9:14Speaker: they've all been kind of vetted by the detective.
- 9:16Speaker: I'm assuming at the beginning of
- 9:19Speaker: it, he was looking at the the
- 9:21Speaker: lady and the other guy more and
- 9:23Speaker: more.
- 9:24Speaker: So the lady, because the lady was around him a lot.
- 9:27Speaker: And what's what's bad about this whole situation?
- 9:29Speaker: My mom not knowing what's going on.
- 9:31Speaker: The lady, uh, was actually at the funeral and everything.
- 9:34Speaker: And we thinking that she, we
- 9:35Speaker: don't think she did it, but we
- 9:37Speaker: believe that she knows more to
- 9:40Speaker: the, to the story, you know what
- 9:41Speaker: I mean?
- 9:42Speaker: And from what I'm hearing on the streets, uh, you know, I, I
- 9:45Speaker: can't prove anything, but from what I'm hearing on the streets
- 9:48Speaker: is and whoever did this, I'm pretty sure I know him too,
- 9:51Speaker: because, you know, my brother felt and trusted this person,
- 9:53Speaker: these people that come in his house for that to happen.
- 9:56Speaker: So from what I heard was three people in this home, you know,
- 10:00Speaker: and it was an argument that pursued, from what I'm hearing
- 10:02Speaker: on the streets and this other fella who I heard, who I know
- 10:06Speaker: and I see still to this day, I've approached him a couple of
- 10:10Speaker: times, but he claims he has nothing to do with it.
- 10:12Speaker: But three or four people told me that he he was the shooter and
- 10:15Speaker: he was the one in there.
- 10:17Speaker: So, you know, I can't prove anything.
- 10:19Speaker: Say anything in.
- 10:20Speaker: The detective has talked to this
- 10:21Speaker: guy too, because at the time,
- 10:23Speaker: right after this happened, the
- 10:24Speaker: guy was locked up and the
- 10:26Speaker: detective said he went to his
- 10:27Speaker: one of his cells and talked to
- 10:29Speaker: him.
- 10:29Speaker: And the guy was just like, you know, fuck you.
- 10:31Speaker: I don't want to talk about it, this and that and made it try to
- 10:34Speaker: blow it off.
- 10:35Speaker: So he didn't say he had nothing to do with it.
- 10:37Speaker: He just blew it off as if he wasn't saying anything.
- 10:39Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 10:40Speaker: So I'm like, you know, it's it's just this is an ugly situation.
- 10:44Speaker: But you know, no one I guess people are scared.
- 10:46Speaker: No one wants to come, come and say anything with that reward,
- 10:49Speaker: which I understand because the person, two or three of the
- 10:52Speaker: people, one of the main, um, resources I had that told me all
- 10:56Speaker: this information, uh, is kin to, to the girl that was there.
- 10:59Speaker: And she came and told me what she had heard the girl over sin
- 11:03Speaker: in her house one time.
- 11:04Speaker: So you know, that right there
- 11:06Speaker: kind of had me like, well, she,
- 11:08Speaker: she might, she might be on to
- 11:09Speaker: something.
- 11:10Speaker: And, and I've already and then
- 11:11Speaker: this guy and this guy who we
- 11:13Speaker: believe has something to do with
- 11:15Speaker: it a month prior to this, had
- 11:17Speaker: got into a physical altercation
- 11:18Speaker: with brother two and there was a
- 11:20Speaker: police report on this and
- 11:21Speaker: everything.
- 11:21Speaker: And I asked the detective, what did you know this?
- 11:23Speaker: And this happened previous.
- 11:25Speaker: And he said, yeah.
- 11:26Speaker: And that nothing was ever charged.
- 11:27Speaker: He was, you know, no one that, uh, he aggravated assaulted my
- 11:31Speaker: brother, but there was no charges brought up or anything.
- 11:34Speaker: My brother didn't press charges.
- 11:35Speaker: And there was another woman and guy in the house that he
- 11:38Speaker: assaulted, too, and no one pressed charges on him.
- 11:40Speaker: So, you know, with that being
- 11:42Speaker: said, nothing was ever done
- 11:44Speaker: about it.
- 11:44Speaker: So that was that too.
- 11:46Speaker: Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker: It's been it's been a long you
- 11:48Speaker: know, I just wanted to have some
- 11:49Speaker: kind of justice served or
- 11:51Speaker: something.
- 11:51Speaker: But, you know, with everything going on, you know, we just it's
- 11:55Speaker: just been a long battle.
- 11:56Speaker: But I mean, not only my brother, I know there's a lot of cases
- 11:58Speaker: going on around here right now with, with all kind of, you
- 12:02Speaker: know, murders going on and no one coming forward.
- 12:05Speaker: So it's, there's definitely a lot of that.
- 12:07Speaker: And I mean, you know, you just got to focus on one at a time
- 12:10Speaker: and your brother's case, you know, there's just there's so
- 12:12Speaker: little out there about this.
- 12:13Speaker: And I thought, yeah, maybe I could put some attention on it.
- 12:16Speaker: Maybe maybe somebody will hear
- 12:18Speaker: this and be like, you know,
- 12:19Speaker: maybe I'll come forward and say
- 12:20Speaker: this one little, this one little
- 12:22Speaker: piece, maybe that'll break open
- 12:23Speaker: the case because maybe that
- 12:24Speaker: detective kind of agrees with
- 12:25Speaker: you, but needs that one little
- 12:27Speaker: tip or something to put him over
- 12:28Speaker: that edge.
- 12:29Speaker: And another thing to what you
- 12:30Speaker: just said, like, I know a lot of
- 12:32Speaker: these cases in Evansville, a lot
- 12:33Speaker: of was brought forward and
- 12:35Speaker: broadcasted.
- 12:35Speaker: But when my brother's situation
- 12:37Speaker: with them first pronouncing him,
- 12:39Speaker: you know, just dying of like,
- 12:41Speaker: you know, a natural cause and
- 12:42Speaker: this and that, and being like
- 12:44Speaker: two or three weeks later saying
- 12:45Speaker: that it was a, you know, a
- 12:47Speaker: homicide.
- 12:48Speaker: It was never put in the paper.
- 12:49Speaker: It was never, you know,
- 12:51Speaker: mentioned until like weeks
- 12:52Speaker: later.
- 12:53Speaker: And it was already too late by then.
- 12:54Speaker: So, you know, it was kind of swept, swept under the rug.
- 12:57Speaker: And the only the only way people knew that my brother was
- 13:00Speaker: murdered by word of mouth or by me mentioning it or, you know,
- 13:04Speaker: something like that.
- 13:05Speaker: But they did put it on the news.
- 13:06Speaker: But when they put it on the news, it was already like, I
- 13:09Speaker: want to say like weeks later.
- 13:11Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:11Speaker: Because I saw I was reading one
- 13:12Speaker: of the articles said, you know,
- 13:13Speaker: they didn't even report it for
- 13:15Speaker: weeks.
- 13:15Speaker: I guess that makes sense because
- 13:16Speaker: they didn't report it for weeks,
- 13:17Speaker: but because it was reported as,
- 13:18Speaker: I guess, like an OD or something
- 13:20Speaker: like that.
- 13:20Speaker: So then when they flipped it over to a murder, then it was
- 13:22Speaker: just kind of like updating paperwork, kind of a situation
- 13:25Speaker: that probably didn't help.
- 13:27Speaker: Was your brother involved in any sort of groups that might.
- 13:30Speaker: Does he did he have any enemies?
- 13:32Speaker: I know he had this altercation
- 13:33Speaker: with this guy a month earlier,
- 13:34Speaker: but I mean, he seemed, from what
- 13:35Speaker: I've read, like he was a pretty
- 13:37Speaker: nice guy.
- 13:37Speaker: And no, he he was a pretty.
- 13:39Speaker: Well, I'll put it like this.
- 13:40Speaker: Here's the whole deal.
- 13:41Speaker: My brother, he was a pretty nice guy.
- 13:43Speaker: He was quiet.
- 13:44Speaker: He. He was the type of dude that wouldn't even harm a fly.
- 13:47Speaker: A fly on him, you know what I mean?
- 13:49Speaker: But what it was, was he was involved with the wrong people,
- 13:52Speaker: the wrong crowd.
- 13:53Speaker: And my brother had let a lot of people take advantage of him.
- 13:56Speaker: And I think he had a little drug problem going on too.
- 13:58Speaker: So at the same time, I thank
- 14:00Speaker: these people that he was around,
- 14:01Speaker: were involved with drugs and
- 14:03Speaker: whoever this person was that
- 14:04Speaker: shot him and might have been
- 14:05Speaker: involved over, you know, drugs
- 14:06Speaker: or something.
- 14:07Speaker: Right.
- 14:07Speaker: But yet still, even though that's all involved, it doesn't
- 14:10Speaker: give you the right to, you know, take someone's life like that.
- 14:13Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 14:13Speaker: No. Absolutely not.
- 14:14Speaker: It doesn't make the person less any less valuable and meaningful
- 14:17Speaker: to everyone else.
- 14:18Speaker: So yeah, so, and I think a lot of times those, those cases get
- 14:21Speaker: kind of brushed under the rug because they just, oh, it's a
- 14:24Speaker: drug situation and they, and they just kind of stop and it's,
- 14:26Speaker: it's not right.
- 14:27Speaker: Exactly, exactly.
- 14:28Speaker: That's, that's exactly what I said.
- 14:30Speaker: I, I don't know, but yeah, my
- 14:32Speaker: sister told me that you were,
- 14:33Speaker: were doing these cases and had
- 14:35Speaker: the podcast and different things
- 14:37Speaker: going on.
- 14:37Speaker: I think it's a pretty good, good idea, man.
- 14:39Speaker: At least someone out there, you
- 14:40Speaker: know, is spreading the word and,
- 14:42Speaker: you know, willing to, you know,
- 14:44Speaker: put stuff out so people, you
- 14:45Speaker: know, are informed about what's
- 14:47Speaker: going on.
- 14:47Speaker: Well, I'm going to do my best to get the word out there.
- 14:50Speaker: And you know, you never know where it might lead.
- 14:52Speaker: So I appreciate you taking the
- 14:54Speaker: time out to talk about your
- 14:55Speaker: brother's case.
- 14:55Speaker: And like I said, hopefully this
- 14:57Speaker: helps make a difference and, you
- 14:58Speaker: know, bring some closure to your
- 15:00Speaker: family.
- 15:01Speaker: I got you, I got you.
- 15:01Speaker: I truly appreciate you, man.
- 15:04Speaker: If you have information that you think may be useful to this
- 15:07Speaker: case, call the Evansville Police Department at eight one two four
- 15:11Speaker: three six four zero two five.
- 15:13Speaker: Or you can leave an anonymous
- 15:15Speaker: tip at eight hundred seventy
- 15:17Speaker: eight.
- 15:17Speaker: Crime and Troy's family has put
- 15:20Speaker: up that five thousand dollars
- 15:21Speaker: reward for information leading
- 15:22Speaker: to a successful prosecution in
- 15:24Speaker: this case.
- 15:25Speaker: So keep that in mind.
- 15:26Speaker: I do have all these links and information on my show notes at
