- 1:12Carter The Unwilling Accomplice. What's the matter? What is this another case for
- 1:30Nick Cotter, Master Detective. Yes, it's another case for that most famous
- 1:42of all manhunters, the detective who's ability it's solving crime is unequaled in the
- 1:47history of detective fiction. Nick Catter, Master Detective. The Night's Curious Adventure,
- 1:53The Unwilling Accomplice for Nick Carter, and the Mystery of the Society Burg.
- 2:07Oh, Lieutenant, what's new and interesting? Well, if it ain't
- 2:09my old friend, Nicholas Carter him that used to be a detective here,
- 2:14what do you mean used to be sure? My boy? Tell me how
- 2:16does it feel to be old and retired? Oh? Come now, Riley,
- 2:20I get it a little peel because I've turned down those few cases you've
- 2:23offered me lately. It's not a few separate cases, Nick, It's all
- 2:27been the same gang. I'm sure of it that the slickest bunch of this
- 2:30department's ever been up against. We need your help, Nick. Look at
- 2:34this came over the wire only this morning. Another society rabber. Oh yes,
- 2:40my boy, quite a hole. Seventy five thousand dollars in gems right
- 2:45out of the vault. When you say, now, Nick, really I
- 2:47think you're right. Looks like the same hand in every job. Well,
- 2:52well, I suggested for your criminal you look for someone who's accepted in the
- 2:55homes of society, and there's just about the greatest safe cracker in the country.
- 3:00Well, oh, thank you, Nick, that's a very great help.
- 3:02I'm sure. I'm sorry, Riley, but really I'm not interested.
- 3:06You know, I don't take a case. And that's well, what in
- 3:08the name that was close that stone missed you? By interest. Sure,
- 3:14somebody's trying to beat me, now, is it? Well, I'll fix
- 3:15that, that isn't it? This seems to be a little matter of communication.
- 3:21Communication. Yes, look there's a kno tied to that stone. Well,
- 3:23now hand that over here? Here you are, and I see what.
- 3:29Well I've listen to this, Nick, my dear Lieutenant Riley. Since
- 3:34the jobs I have pulled off lately have so completely mystified your department, may
- 3:38I suggest that you call upon the services of your very good and able friend,
- 3:42Nicholas Carter. It won't help much, of course, but at least
- 3:46I'll then have an adversary more worthy of my talents. You see, I'm
- 3:50very in the pattern and going on to much bigger things today. It has
- 3:53been the National Loan and Trust Company. It is not only theft, but
- 3:59murder as well. Well, Nick, what do you make of that?
- 4:02Very interesting? Interesting? Is it? Why the cheek of him? The
- 4:06National known in trust company, he says, And murder, he says.
- 4:11We're dealing with a conceited maniac. Give me that phone. I'm going to
- 4:14check up on this. It's now five thirty on Saturday afternoon. Riley.
- 4:16I doubt that you'll find anyone at the bank. Ah, yeah, lady
- 4:20and gentlemen had to see you, they say, it's most right. Well
- 4:23what are you waiting for? Show me? And yes, sir, that's
- 4:26right, Thank you Riley. Yes, but let me to introduce myself.
- 4:32I'm Butler Pierce and this is miss Olive Beldon. My fields. Pleased to
- 4:36make your acquaintance. Now what can I be doing for you? You can
- 4:40help us find Miss Beldon's father. He's missing. Oh missing, hen yestant
- 4:44j had been going for hours and I'm beginning to feel something dreadful me have
- 4:47happened. Oh excuse me. This is Nick Carter, missus Belden and mister
- 4:53Peers Carter the detective, the same as bel Oh. I'm so glad,
- 4:56mister Carter. Would you mean missing your alarms? I'm one unwarranted. Your
- 5:00father hasn't been missing very long. I take it that's true, mister Carter,
- 5:03only three hours to be exact. But under the circud Miss Beldon means,
- 5:06mister Carter, is that it seems as if her father had disappeared into
- 5:10thin air. How do you mean, mister Peers, Well, the last
- 5:13time she saw him it was through the living room window. From there she
- 5:15could look out over the court into his private office at the bank. And
- 5:18when she bank Did you say bank, mister Pearce, Why yes, Olive's
- 5:24father is Wayne Belden, president of the National Loan and Trust Company. Did
- 5:27you hear that, Nick is the National Loan and Trust Company? That's right?
- 5:30It not a minute to be lost. Come on, now, let
- 5:45me get this straight, miss Beldon. You say your father came into his
- 5:47private office here through that special passageway that leads from the house to the bank.
- 5:50That's right, mister Carter. Father often spent Saturday afternoons here writing letters,
- 5:55I see, And there was no one else in the bank at that
- 5:57time. No, this is Saturday, you know, and after banking hours.
- 6:00Of course. When is the last time you saw your father? About
- 6:03one o'clock, mister Carter, He was sitting at his desk here writing a
- 6:08letter. When I looked through the window again a few hours later, he
- 6:11wasn't there. Sure he hadn't returned to the house. Positive I'd have seen
- 6:15the passageway opens right into the living room where I was reading. What happened
- 6:18when you look for him and it wasn't there? Well, just about then,
- 6:23mister Pierce called on me. I told him about father's absence, and
- 6:26we both went to look for him. I say, by what time was
- 6:29that? Oh about four o'clock. And so you both went into the bank
- 6:33as soon as you missed your father. Yes, we found mister Beldon's office
- 6:36just as you see it now. Then we looked all through the bank.
- 6:40There wasn't a sign of him anywhore. I'll wait a minute, all of
- 6:43you. What mister prevent mister Belton from walking right out the front door of
- 6:46the bank as easy as that. That's not very likely, Lieutenant. He
- 6:49was wearing his house slippers at the time, and he had no colder hat.
- 6:53Oh and not only that, Riley. You see this letter here on
- 6:56Belden's desk. He was writing it when something interrupted him. M you notice
- 7:00anything peculiar about it? No, excepted he broke off in the middle of
- 7:05his hiddence more important than that rally. He stopped in the middle of a
- 7:09word. Belden was interrupted very abruptly. Oh that must be the cashier.
- 7:12Now, hello, mister cook In, how almost Beldon. I got here
- 7:16just as soon as I could. This is mister Carter and Lieutenant Riley now,
- 7:20what's all this I hear about mister Belton disappearing? That's right, mister
- 7:24Cook, but I have an idea he'll soon be found. What do you
- 7:28mean by that, mister Carter. I've asked mister Cook to come down here
- 7:30because it's the cashier of the bank. He's the only one beside mister Beldon
- 7:32who knows the combination to the large vault. And I want that vault opened
- 7:39immediately. But that's impossible, mister Carter. The Large Vault operates on a
- 7:42time mark. It can't be opened until nine o'clock Monday morning. We can't
- 7:45wait that long. It must be open now. I'm sorry, mister Cotter.
- 7:47That's impossible, and I'll do it myself. What did It's impossible?
- 7:49I tell you, you give me one hour and we'll see how impossible it
- 7:51is. You don't seem to be having much luck, do you, mister
- 8:09Carton. Don't you worry about that? Mister Pears. I never saw the
- 8:13luck yet that could keep it secrets from Nick Carter very long. Not that
- 8:16kind of luck, lieutenant. Why there isn't anybody in the world a good
- 8:20Why heaven see? Did it any way? Gentlemen? I told you so,
- 8:24Peers. Ray Eh, look there where is it? Nick? There
- 8:28in the corner? Yes, miss Beldon, your father's been murdered. Was
- 8:46Misspelton rally? No, she's all right now, Nick, mister Pears took
- 8:48her back to the house. Good. Well, mister Cook, have you
- 8:52finished examining the contents of the vault? Yes, mister Carter, and you
- 8:56are right there has been a robbery, fifty thousand dollars missing. Well,
- 9:00I'll be just as the note said, Nick. Remember theft and murdered,
- 9:05yes, Raley, But the theft, I'm sure it was just an afterthought,
- 9:07mister Cook. Did mister Belden have any enemies? Why not that I
- 9:11know of. What do you tell me about mister Pearce? What do you
- 9:15mean? Well? Was he friendly with mister Belden? Oh? Yes,
- 9:18yes quite they were very good friends. They known each other for years.
- 9:22And was mister Pearce in the habit of visiting mister Beldon in his office at
- 9:24the bank, Oh yes, yes, very often. He had an account
- 9:28here right, a large one, I might add, mister Pish, you
- 9:30know, is a very wealthy man. Indeed, yes, sir, Well,
- 9:33what's that you've gotten your hand in Nick, Oh, this is it's
- 9:37part of a cufflink, really, with a very interesting stain on it,
- 9:41a fresh blood stain. Where'd you find it, Nick, in the dead
- 9:43man's hand. But there was no blood on the body. He was done
- 9:48in by a crack on the sculdar. There was no bleeding exactly, Raley.
- 9:50It's undoubtedly the murderer's own blood, Papa, Bytre's hand on the broken
- 9:54edge of the cuff link in the scuffle. Do you wear it? Won't
- 9:56be for anything else, mister Carror. Oh no, thank you, mister
- 9:58Cook. Well, good day, Oh, mister Cook. One more thing,
- 10:03Yes, tell me, is mister Pierce in the habit of wearing his
- 10:07gloves indoors? His gloves? Why no, never, dear wait, come
- 10:13to think of it, he was wearing them just now, wasn't he,
- 10:18Yes, he was. Well, thank you, mister Cook, Thank you
- 10:22very much. Confounded, Patsy, this is the strangest case I've ever worked
- 10:35on. Well, you've suently been acting strangely, Nick, pacing up and
- 10:37down, muttering to yourself. Just isn't the shred of evidence anywhere, Patsy,
- 10:41As far as I can see, no motive whatsoever. Yet I'm positive
- 10:46that Butler Pierce is our man, that he's not only the murderer of Wayne
- 10:48Belden, but is also the society Robert, there's been battling the police for
- 10:52months now. But Nick, he's a rich man and Wayne Belden was one
- 10:54of his best friends. I know, I know, Patsy, but it
- 10:56still adds up to Butler Pierce. Look, he was thoroughly familiar with the
- 11:01bank, thoroughly familiar with Wayne Belden's habits. He called at the Belden house
- 11:03after the crime had been committed. He wore his gloves indoors, which might
- 11:07have been to conceal a bad scratch from a broken cuplink. He arrived at
- 11:09police headquarters immediately after that stone had been thrown through the window. Nick,
- 11:13miss Belin was with him when he called to see Riley. Surely you don't
- 11:16think he could have thrown that stone, No, Patsy, but his schauffeur
- 11:20could have. While we're entering the building. His chauffeur, Yes, was
- 11:24he who set me thinking on this line originally. What do you mean by
- 11:26that, Patsy. I got a good look at that chauffeur, and I'm
- 11:30sure I've seen him somewhere before, a long time ago, and he wasn't
- 11:35on the right side of the law either. Oh, it all sounds like
- 11:37a big hunch to me, Nick. Yes, you're right, Patsy,
- 11:39it's just what it is, a big hunch. Although I have to admit
- 11:43your hunches are usually pretty good. Patsy, I feel so sure this hunch
- 11:48is right. I'm going to play for Llisworth. What are you going to
- 11:52do. I'm gonna start playing it right now. Let's cuppy for me.
- 11:54We're going calling on mister Butler Pierce. You're taking a long time opening.
- 12:09That's safe, Nick, And it's a tough baby, Scubby. But I've
- 12:11almost got it now, Oh, I sure hope. So, Nick,
- 12:15I don't think mister Pearce would like to come home and find us here in
- 12:18his library. And at this stage I grant you that wouldn't be a trifle
- 12:20embarrassing. But when I get through, Ah, I did it. Now
- 12:28let's see what we have here, Stubby. Look at this Why, it's
- 12:39full of jewelry and that's the real stuff. Yes, unless I miss my
- 12:43bet, every piece of it. And for the description of some stolen gem.
- 12:46Wow, let's see what else now? Oh, what's that thick?
- 12:52What does it look like? It looks like a package of bills, and
- 12:54all big ones too. Exactly what it is, Scubby. Let's see how
- 12:58much boy? Look at those thousand dollars bills on it. Fifty thousand dollars
- 13:05Scubby, the exact amount stolen from the bank. Well, of course it
- 13:07could be a coincidence. Yes, it could be, but I doubt it.
- 13:13Ah, this does it, Scubby. We don't have to speculate any
- 13:16further. Oh, this letter I found on the drawer here clears up everything.
- 13:20Listen to this, dear butler. This is a warning to you to
- 13:22permit you to escape if you care to do so. I have definite proof
- 13:26that you are a thief, and on Monday morning I shall place that proof
- 13:28before the proper authorities. You haven't to let time to escape, Signed Wayne
- 13:33Belden Gosh. Nick, Yes, Scabby Gosh. And there we have the
- 13:35motive of Wayne Beldin's burder. So your hunch was right after all, Nick,
- 13:39The rich mister Pierce is nothing but a thief and a murderer. Scubby.
- 13:43Oh look, Nick, you better get out of the Scuy. It
- 13:45just came to me what Butler Pierce's chauffeur is really Jim Martin. I knew
- 13:48I've seen him before. Jim Martin, I never heard of him, Nick,
- 13:52Now that was before your time. I tangled with him many years ago
- 13:54on the West Coast, one of the cleverest cracksmen in the business. He
- 13:58could open almost any safe I could. Oh, so that's it. He
- 14:00and Pierce have been working together. Yes, he's with the front and real
- 14:03brains, while Martin supplied the technical skills, so to speak. Oh I
- 14:05see, well what now, Nick, Scubby? Yeah, I want you
- 14:11to clear out of very quick. Take Wayne Beldon's letter with you, get
- 14:13it to Lieutenant Raley immediately and tell him to pick up Jim Martin. Oh,
- 14:16well, what about Butler Pierce. Don't you worry about him, Scubby.
- 14:20I'm staying right here. I want to tackle Butler Pierce myself. Good
- 14:48evening, Nick Carter. What are you doing in my house waiting for you?
- 14:54Mister Pierce? What do you want? I want you to be reasonable.
- 14:56I'm not making any fuss. This isn't the water pistol I've got in
- 14:58my hand. Have you gone mad? What in the world are you talking
- 15:01about? It? Now? Go Piers, you can drop the act.
- 15:03I took the liberty of going through your safe. Oh so that's it.
- 15:07You're pretty clever at getting into safe, aren't you. Yes, as good
- 15:11at it as your pal Jim Martin. Oh I see, I guess I
- 15:18underrated you, Coder. No, Pierce, you overrated yourself. Perhaps what's
- 15:24your next move? My next move is to turn over to the law.
- 15:26Thief and a murderer. Turn around, get your hands behind you. Uh
- 15:31huh, so there is a scratch on your wrist, just as I expected.
- 15:39I guess those handcuffs at to hold you for a while. Sit down
- 15:41on that chair. Stay there, Riley, This is Nick got the murderer
- 15:56Wayne Belding for you, work butler Pierce, Nikka, are you sure you're
- 16:04not making a quite sure? Scobby should be at my head quarters in a
- 16:07minute now with all the proof you want from Pierce's home. He's sitting in
- 16:12a chair right behind me with a pair of handcuffs on him. I'll expect
- 16:15you. Oh, Nick, are you all right? He's coming to now?
- 16:32Patsy, I'm all right. I guess rather my head. That was
- 16:37a nasty bump you got, my boy. I'll take it easy. Here,
- 16:41give me your hand. Can you stand up? All right? Boy?
- 16:48Yeah, I guess I'm okay. Now what happened, I guess is
- 16:51as good as mine, passy. All I know is that I had Butler
- 16:55Pierce in my hands, and he's going, that's too bad. Nick,
- 17:00Hey, look at the safe. It's empty. Naturally it would be good
- 17:03and leave all that evidence lying around. Yeah, it's a good thing we
- 17:06got that letter at least that's But the important thing is to find Peers.
- 17:10He must be pretty clever, Nick, getting away from you like that,
- 17:12Yes, Ptcy, he's all of that more you got away this time.
- 17:17But I'll bring him to justice if it's the last thing I ever do.
- 17:32Well, Nick, we got Jim Martin anyway, picked him up late last
- 17:36night. Good work, Riley. That's half the gang anyway. Yeah,
- 17:38I know if we only had Butlo Peers, Yes, but I think it's
- 17:41gonna be a lot easier now with Jim Martin in our hands. What do
- 17:45you mean, got an idea? Rally? It works. It won't be
- 17:48long before we catch up with Wayne Beldon's murder rally. Well, Martin,
- 18:03we meet again. Yeah, it's been a long time, ain't it.
- 18:07Corner. Yes, but I never forget a face Martin, no matter how
- 18:11much it's been changed. I must say, though, the doctor did a
- 18:15really good job on you, but it just isn't quite good enough. Yeah,
- 18:19you're a smart aggle, right. I guess the boss knows that.
- 18:22Boy. Now it's a pretty keen one himself, Martin. I had him,
- 18:26but he got away. Yeah, eh, boy, he sure it
- 18:30is slick one. I thought him. I had the cuffs on him.
- 18:33You didn't make the mistake of trying to hauld him with a pair of handcuffs,
- 18:36did you. Yes? Why the rate a pair maid that could hold
- 18:41Butler peers? He's a regular whiz. Maybe so, Martin, You're in
- 18:48a pretty tough spot. Murder, serious business, murder, Harna, you're
- 18:53barking up the wrong tree, Carter. I didn't have nothing to do with
- 18:56that. But you did open the vault at the bank. Sure, like
- 19:00I don't know all the job for Pierce after he paid the weight, But
- 19:04murder, that ain't my rocket. Maybe not. It'll go a lot easier
- 19:10with you, Martin if you play ball, meaning you know where Pierce's hideout
- 19:15is. Sure, what about it? They want you to help us put
- 19:18the finger on him. Now, you want to know me better than that,
- 19:22Carter. That's what I thought you'd say. I have a proposition for
- 19:26you, Martin. He will help us track him down. We'll set you
- 19:32free. The answer is still the same. I'm no stool pigeon. Well,
- 19:38Martin, we're going to let you walk out of here anyway. What
- 19:41do you say to that? I say it won't work, Carter, What
- 19:44do you mean, mesten, I'm out of your game. You're gonna set
- 19:48me loose so you can tail me. That is because that's the last thing
- 19:52I'd ever do. And I'm telling you that right now. And yet,
- 19:56Martin, that's exactly what you're going to do. Lead us right to Butler
- 20:00Pierce. You must be off your nut. I wouldn't even try to go
- 20:06near him. In fact, I do everything I could to throw you off.
- 20:10I know that, Martin. And yet, inspired of yourself, you're
- 20:14going to help us catch Butler Peers clerk, Yes, sir, anyway of
- 20:30for me today? Names Martin, James Martin, just a minute, I'll
- 20:33see Oh nothing, mister Martin. Thanks hello Martin. You expecting a letter
- 20:41from someone? Who are you? I'll give you one guess that ough'll be
- 20:45enough. Oh you must be the guy that's following me, one of the
- 20:49guys, Martin. I'm Scubby Wilson. I work with Nick Carter. I'm
- 20:53great to see you. You know, I've been getting sort of anxious the
- 20:56last few days to know what you guys look like. Yes, I can
- 21:00understand. That must have been quite a strain on you, knowing that you
- 21:03were being watched every minute of the day and not knowing who was doing the
- 21:07watching. Yeah, it was sort of getting me done a little. Well
- 21:10that's what mister Carter was figuring on I guess. Oh, yeah, not
- 21:15a good it is gonna do him. You never know, Martin. Hey,
- 21:18I can't figure this thing at all. Oh you're not supposed to,
- 21:21Martin. No, you just keep on having a good time, that's all
- 21:23you bet. I will. And as for Nick Carter, you can tell
- 21:27him for me. Whatever his scheme is, it ain't working, to see.
- 21:30How do you know it isn't working. I haven't led you to pearce
- 21:34yet, have I pound? No, not yet. But you will your
- 21:40nuts too. You're all nuts night? Good night. Oh but Martin,
- 21:47knowing Nick Carter as I do, I don't think we're the ones that are
- 21:51nuts. Well, Nikki, you don't look like that little plan of yours
- 22:04is going to pay off that, does it? Know? Be patient,
- 22:07Riley's a question of time and all. But Martin's been on the loose now
- 22:11for over two weeks. How much long are we going to wait? Nick?
- 22:15As long as necessary? Are we? Now? Yes? Rany,
- 22:18you agreed. I'm positive what we're doing is the one sure way of getting
- 22:22on Pierce's trail. They sure don't seem very positive to me. You've got
- 22:26plan, clothes men and detectives outlooking for the manteer. Sure we set out
- 22:30a general alarm just as soon as Pierce got away from you, have they
- 22:33brought him in yet? Well? No, But I mean my way is
- 22:37slow, Riley, But it's sure. Well nickoll I can say? Is
- 22:41I wish I was as sure of that as you are. If we don't
- 22:45get Pierce this way, they're going to laugh me right out of the department,
- 22:48using ugh, valuable men and time. Just keeping an eye on this
- 22:51counter that should be behind bars this very second. You will be Riley.
- 22:55Just as soon as we got pierced too. They keep you company the police
- 23:00headquarters. Lieutenant Radley speaking, Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's here for
- 23:03you. Nick, Yeah, thanks very oh oh yes, Kevy yeah uh
- 23:12oh you did it? Okay, it's fine, Skeby, good work,
- 23:18so long, Skeby, Well, Rally, it looks like this is it?
- 23:22Yeah? What happened? Did Martin finally get in touch with Pierce?
- 23:25No, Raley, it happened as I expected. The mountain came to Mohammad?
- 23:29Who did what? Unless I'm very much mistaken? Pierce has finally got
- 23:33in touch with Martin? Oh? Is it? It's me him? Oh?
- 23:48Don't you recognize my boys? Hell, Jimmy, whow wore you?
- 23:55May? I come in? H Look, lady, I'm afraid that some
- 23:59mistake you got the wrong party. There's no mistake, Martton, Holy Mac
- 24:03got you Pierce. Yes, it's me much boys. I've seen most of
- 24:06your disguises, but this beach more really look like a woman. Thanks.
- 24:11Hey, you shouldn't have come here, though, boys. It's dangerous,
- 24:14yes, Martin, very dangerous for you. What do you mean boys?
- 24:17I don't like a squealer, Martin? A squealer? Me? Hey,
- 24:21you got this all wrong? Have I? I never read it on anyone
- 24:22bors, I wouldn't start now, not even to save your own neck.
- 24:26You were in this thing as deep as I you know, sure, I
- 24:29know that. But whatever gave you the idea i'd rat on you? What
- 24:30gave me the idea? Oh? I get it? You mean? Why
- 24:34am I on a jail? Honest? Boys, this wasn't my idea.
- 24:37Carter let me go? You see, he got enough mutton. I think
- 24:41I'm a fool. Let you go? Uh? Just like that? Well,
- 24:45I won't be so generous stool pigeon. Hey, what are you doing?
- 24:47Boss? No? Oh, he ain't gonna use that cat on me.
- 24:49Yes again, see, look you I'm making a mistake. Boys,
- 24:52Please, you gotta listen to me. Let me tell you how it happened.
- 24:55You listen to me, and I'll tell you. Carta didn't have a
- 24:56thing on me, not a thing, do you understand? Yes? Sure?
- 25:00Then he spotted your ugly mug. Put two and two together. I
- 25:03didn't think anybody would recognize that pan of yours anymore, but somehow Carter did.
- 25:07So he had you picked up, and what he got out of you
- 25:11must have been plenty of Why else would Carter have let you go? I
- 25:15don't know. I'll tell you why. Because you spill the works, Martin,
- 25:18spill the works and got your freedom for it. No any why they
- 25:21let me go. It was all a scheme they had. What are you
- 25:22talking about? Sure, Boss? They told me they'd let me go if
- 25:26I steered him to the hide art. But I wouldn't do it, not
- 25:29me. No, so they let you out anyway. Yeah, Yeah,
- 25:30that's it. Okay, squealer, I've heard enough now, no boss,
- 25:34no shooting, Nick, You're not the gun right out of his hand,
- 25:41Nick Carter. Yes, mister Butler Peers, we meet again. You are
- 25:45right, Martin? Yeah? I guess. So you didn't get here any
- 25:49too, soda. Oh so I was right you you were expected. Relax,
- 25:55Martin wasn't expecting anyone. He played square with you right along. Yes,
- 26:00And what was he doing on the loose? Just a temporary arrangement.
- 26:02Pierce. There's a trap we set for you, and you obliged us by
- 26:06walking right into it. Very clever of your cutter, not at all,
- 26:10you see, mister Pierce. I based my plan on the belief that at
- 26:11bottom you were not so clever really, And how do you mean that?
- 26:15Because instead of doing the really clever thing, getting as far away from you
- 26:19as you possibly could. I felt sure that your personal vanity would lead you
- 26:23to expose yourself to almost any risk in order to get the man you thought
- 26:26it'd betrayed you. All gangsters react that way. You can hardly consider me
- 26:30a gangster, mister Carter. At heart, that's exactly what you are,
- 26:34and that's what I counted on. So you had it all figured out.
- 26:38Yes, I also counted on your pal Martin doing exactly as he did after
- 26:44we let him go. He laid low for a while to pray to what
- 26:45we were going to do. But after a few days of that, he
- 26:48got bored doing nothing, just as I figured he would. Made a lot
- 26:52of money out of jobs you two did together, and now we wanted to
- 26:56spend something, so we stepped out visited the high spot state at Divine Hotel.
- 27:00So I heard, Yes, I knew you would. Matter of fact,
- 27:03I counted on him. You figured we got him loose, and I
- 27:07paid him well for squealing on you. Help is you put two and two
- 27:11together, all right, But you got the wrong answer, and the wrong
- 27:15answer you God is going to send you to the electric chair. It is
- 27:18the end of the road for you, mister pears. Mister Carter, I
- 27:22gotta take my hat off to you, really, Mart, and to what
- 27:26am I undebted for this great honor? Who you said i'd lead you to
- 27:30Pierce and I said I wouldn't, and you made me do it. You
- 27:33even know what I was thinking all the time I did it. Yes,
- 27:36Carter, you're cleverer than I thought you would. Thank you, gentlemen.
- 27:41I'm very happy I can't stay the same for you too. This has been
- 28:06another of the strange adventures off Nick Carter, Master Detective, which are brought
- 28:10to you regularly at the same time each week by w R Mutual. Oh,
- 28:15what's your story going to be next week? Nick? The title of
- 28:17the story that I want to tell you next week really gives you the clue
- 28:19to the whole thing. I call it the Corpse of the Cab. Oh
- 28:22you mean, I suppose that you're going to tell us how the corpse got
- 28:26into the cab, who the corpse was, and so on? Is that
- 28:27the idea? That's the idea is the Scott. But it's not nearly as
- 28:30simple as it sounds when you tell it. There were no clues on the
- 28:33corpse, no means of identification at all that isn't quite true, Passy.
- 28:37It would have been literally true if you hadn't been called in on the job.
- 28:41You know, Lieutenant Riley was completely down. Yes, but I'm not
- 28:45sure just how little it takes to stump my friend Raley completely. Anyway,
- 28:48Missus Scott, if Nick hadn't been able to apply a little real deductive reasoning
- 28:52to the few bits of evidence he could find, the case would still be
- 28:56a nitsy. I know that well, Passy. However that may be to
- 29:00show you that next week's story will keep your guessing right to the very end.
- 29:03And until then. So long folk, So long everybody, and solong
- 29:07to you, both Nick and Patsy. The strange adventure you have just heard.
- 29:11Nick Carter was impersonated by Lon Clark, Patsy by Helen Choke, Scubby
- 29:17by John Kaine. The story was written for Nick Carter by Ralph Burkey.
- 29:22Original music was played by Lou White. The entire production was under the direction
- 29:26of Jack McGregor. Next week, at the same time, listen to another
- 29:48curious experience of Nick Carter entitled The Corpse in the Cab for Nick Carter and
- 29:53the Mystery of the Murder in the Park. This story is a copyrighted feature
- 30:03of Street and Smith Publications, Incorporated. The Return of Nick Carter is produced
- 30:07in the studios of WR and is broadcast over most of these stations every Saturday
- 30:11evening at seven o'clock Eastern walktime. And don't forget the adventures of Nick's adopted
- 30:17son, Chick Carter, are broadcast over most of these stations Monday through Friday
- 30:21at five point thirty pm Eastern wartime. This is mutual welcome back. Well,
- 30:41it's rare for a detective show to episode to end with the detective being
- 30:48praised by you men who are headed up the river and possibly to the electric
- 30:52chair or his cleverness and cunning. But I think Nick does earn it here
- 31:00saw where he was going. But I still had to appreciate how he played
- 31:04the two off against each other to trap the other criminal. Though if Nick's
- 31:14psychological profile had been just slightly off, well then maybe you're looking at a
- 31:18different ending. But anyways, another episode in the books. We did have
- 31:22some comments and praise from Juliet regarding episode ten seventy four, nine Hours to
- 31:29Live. Juliet said, this was so good. Love this story. Thanks
- 31:34so much, Juliet. Jim says, love the shows. I injured my
- 31:40back fighting a fire years ago and wouldn't make it through the night without your
- 31:44superb shows. Thanks well, thanks so much, Jim, And then a
- 31:48comment from podcast ally doing a great job at him well, thank you very
- 31:52much for your kind comments. We will be back tomorrow with the conclude usion
- 32:00of the Lonely Hearts Matter and is somewhat unusual in But be sure and listen
- 32:06tomorrow and then next Thursday we'll be back with another episode of Nick Carter.
