SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to the Deep Track Podcast, an exploration of watches, trends, and culture with a few adventures in between.
0:14
SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Blake Bettner.
0:16
SPEAKER_00: This week I welcome back to the podcast Wesley Smith of Standard H.
0:21
SPEAKER_00: In this episode, we cover a lot of ground from the Rolex Daytona.
0:25
SPEAKER_00: Looking back a few generations, he is the owner of a five-digit 16520, and uh we kind of talk about some of the subtleties and changes that have happened over the generations and where we stand on them.
0:35
SPEAKER_00: We also talk about some other new releases and share our thoughts on them.
0:39
SPEAKER_00: Uh we talk about getting older, what that's like, how becoming fathers has shifted our perspectives on uh, well, more than a few things and how we take care of ourselves.
0:47
SPEAKER_00: And finally, we talk about Monaco and really the state of the Formula One season.
0:53
SPEAKER_00: This is a uh new rule set, so there's been more than a few controversies to come along with that.
0:58
SPEAKER_00: Uh, we take a look, though, at the really unbelievable performances that we've seen from Kimi Antonelli uh and others and give our thoughts on uh on some of the cars that we are like this season.
1:08
SPEAKER_00: And with the 24 hour of Le Mans upon us this coming weekend, we talk a little bit about that as well.
1:13
SPEAKER_00: I've got more standard watch content to coming to the podcast next week, so keep an eye out for that.
1:18
SPEAKER_00: I've also got a lot of new things that have gone live over on thedeeptrack.com, including a review of the Vacheron Constantine Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points from Devin Pennypacker.
1:29
SPEAKER_00: We talked a little bit about it last week.
1:30
SPEAKER_00: The full review is now live up on the site.
1:33
SPEAKER_00: Uh I will leave a link to where you can find all this stuff down below.
1:36
SPEAKER_00: All right, with that, please enjoy this week's episode with Wesley Smith.
1:39
SPEAKER_00: Hi, Wesley.
1:40
SPEAKER_00: How are you?
1:41
SPEAKER_00: Hey, buddy.
1:42
SPEAKER_00: It's good to see you.
1:43
SPEAKER_00: You too.
1:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh dude, we're smacking the middle of summer uh uh here, and that means a lot of really like cool stuff, all right?
1:51
SPEAKER_00: We've got uh we're like in the thick of we're just heading into like the European tour of F1 stuff.
1:57
SPEAKER_00: Um my one of my favorite weekends of the year is the Lamont 24 hour race.
2:02
SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
2:03
SPEAKER_00: Which is this coming weekend?
2:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't um I keep seeing the promo stuff, and uh I've gotta be on my P's and Q's with the with the with the viewing of it because I I can't wait.
2:13
SPEAKER_02: Um the cars are just so cool, you know, the variety and and everything.
2:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the a lot of cool cars uh this year.
2:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh obviously, unfortunately, we lose the 963 from Porsche.
2:23
SPEAKER_00: So it always uh a Laman without a Porsche in the top class always feels a little weird to me.
2:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
2:29
SPEAKER_00: Um and uh uh I think there, but there are also like a lot of really cool cars that are coming in.
2:35
SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we've got the Genesis this year, which is it's uh a rookie entry.
2:39
SPEAKER_00: We'll have the McLaren next year, uh, which would be great.
2:42
SPEAKER_00: And uh the BMWs uh in the top uh hypercar class just won the last round um in uh Spa, I believe.
2:51
SPEAKER_00: And uh uh so I feel like there's there's you know, this will be Alpine's last year.
2:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I there's a lot of like interesting storylines.
2:58
SPEAKER_00: Moving and shaking.
2:59
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
3:00
SPEAKER_00: So I don't I don't know necessarily, like I wouldn't say Ferrari's a lock, like they've won the last three years straight.
3:07
SPEAKER_00: The way these things go, they can go in kind of those spurts, right?
3:10
SPEAKER_00: Like four or five years straight of of win, like Toyota before before this, and uh uh or Porsche, all that kind of like they've always always kind of been kind of streaky.
3:19
SPEAKER_00: So but I don't know.
3:20
SPEAKER_00: This year I feel like I don't know what's gonna happen, and it's a lot of fun to to watch.
3:23
SPEAKER_00: So I'm really excited about that uh this weekend.
3:25
SPEAKER_02: Do you have a a favorite track as far as is WEC goes or or F1 for that matter?
3:31
SPEAKER_02: Because mine's Spa.
3:33
SPEAKER_00: I I was gonna say I love Spa, you know, it's uh it's it's fantastic.
3:36
SPEAKER_00: Um I I also like the Nerber Ring, the Nerber Ring and North Life together.
3:41
SPEAKER_00: Sure.
3:42
SPEAKER_00: Um that um you know 24 hour race obviously was was a few weeks back with uh with Max um unfortunately having to retire from that.
3:49
SPEAKER_00: But I like I really love that track.
3:51
SPEAKER_00: Like I know you're not like a video game guy or whatever, but Grand Turismo.
3:54
SPEAKER_00: Like I'll pop open, you know, uh the Nerber Ring North Life and and and and just do laps on that.
4:01
SPEAKER_00: I love it.
4:01
SPEAKER_00: And the same with Spa.
4:03
SPEAKER_00: And those two geographically are not all that far apart.
4:06
SPEAKER_00: Uh in the world, it'd be a really fun trip to do.
4:09
SPEAKER_00: I was just about to say that.
4:11
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
4:12
SPEAKER_02: You know, week in, week out, you know, go to Monaco, then hop up to Le Ball, you know.
4:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just casual, casual from Mediterranean and then up uh to the north of France, and then over to Belgium.
4:24
SPEAKER_00: Um I guess uh over Germany and then Belgium, maybe you'd end in uh in Spa because I think uh the Nerbergring is in um northwestern uh Germany, and then uh the um and then Spa is in southeastern Belgium.
4:40
SPEAKER_02: Belgium.
4:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
4:42
SPEAKER_02: So thereabouts.
4:44
SPEAKER_02: I I couldn't help but notice, and not that we always do a wrist check on this show, but I couldn't help but notice the Daytona today, and uh it's very uh on on the same page with Laman, even though you're not wearing a Laman specifically.
4:57
SPEAKER_02: Uh tell tell me about the history of this watch for you, because I uh you've owned it for several years.
5:04
SPEAKER_02: I know that.
5:05
SPEAKER_02: Um, you went white dial, which is probably if I were to buy a modern Daytona, I would do the same.
5:12
SPEAKER_02: But tell me what what appeals to you about this watch?
5:15
SPEAKER_02: Why did you buy it?
5:16
SPEAKER_02: Where did you get it?
5:18
SPEAKER_02: How did you get it?
5:19
SPEAKER_02: The people want to know.
5:21
SPEAKER_00: You know, I have kind of a sordid relationship with the Daytona overall.
5:25
SPEAKER_00: It's it's a watch that like many of us have always like kind of had a thing for, right?
5:29
SPEAKER_00: Yep, uh, from the very early days of being into the hobby.
5:32
SPEAKER_00: And and uh one of the things that always kind of kept me interested in it is it always seemed like there were interesting wrinkles to its history to learn about and to discover and different weird variations.
5:43
SPEAKER_00: And I'm always like there's always something new to learn about the new tona.
5:46
SPEAKER_00: I still feel like that today.
5:47
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and there's still things that I come across about it that I that I didn't know that I enjoy reading about.
5:52
SPEAKER_00: Um, so for me, it's like one of those watches that is like perennially interesting because of that.
5:57
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
5:58
SPEAKER_00: Um you know, all the the the hypey stuff around it kind of um uh sapped some of my enthusiasm around it for for a period there.
6:08
SPEAKER_00: Totally.
6:09
SPEAKER_00: That stuff comes and goes, you know, and and this is a watch that's been um you know, it's just been kind of a mainstay, uh, obviously, since um since the late 50s.
6:17
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, to me it's it's it's bigger than that than just being defined by a single kind of like era when a bunch of assholes wore it and wanted it, right?
6:27
SPEAKER_00: Sure.
6:27
SPEAKER_00: Like uh like it's it was here before that, it'll be here here after that.
6:31
SPEAKER_00: Um so um I sold my modern Pepsi because of what you just said.
6:37
SPEAKER_00: So you get it, right?
6:38
SPEAKER_00: Like in and I've I've had those feelings.
6:41
SPEAKER_00: I think anybody who's owned watches that have gone through those periods has has to kind of deal with that and and really kind of confront like their own identity around the watch.
6:51
SPEAKER_02: And I don't I don't I don't even know if you know, but I sold it for my Zenith Daytona.
6:55
SPEAKER_02: Oh, did you?
6:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, interesting.
6:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that's not a bad uh you know, like the you know, the the the uh the 16520, I think is its own kind of interesting story and and chapter, obviously, in the in the Daytona history.
7:10
SPEAKER_00: I'm actually looking at one uh right now uh to potentially add uh because of it's a reference I've never owned.
7:18
SPEAKER_02: And uh I just it wears better than the Pepsi.
7:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the the the I think that's a that's like a real strength of of that generation of like like any five-digit roller right?
7:29
SPEAKER_00: Like they wear just like fantastic.
7:31
SPEAKER_00: So the case is a great size.
7:33
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, obviously that this this generation that I have on my wrist is the one, two, six, um, five, zero, zero, and it adopted the the uh the same kind of precious metal symmetric case of the the previous generation.
7:44
SPEAKER_00: So uh so it has like a kind of a slightly larger flare to the end of its lug, and you know, it wears ever so slightly larger, but yeah, you know, not big by like it's still like a very great watch.
7:56
SPEAKER_02: That's kind of like my 2018 OP no date, is like those lugs are a little there's broader shoulders, let's call it, um, as opposed to the the current that are kind of uh slightly more tapered.
8:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the the the the the shape though of of yours, I think, has there's a really nice kind of just taper into a point, you know, where there's more of a foot on the lug of this one.
8:16
SPEAKER_00: And then obviously it's a symmetrical case unlike um uh the pr the the previous generation, so that kind of fills out a little bit more of the space on on the wrist.
8:25
SPEAKER_00: I always kind of think it's it's like like like that perfect pair of jeans that you've worn for like or that you've worn for like 10 years, and you slide them on and they just like fit perfectly to your body.
8:34
SPEAKER_00: Like the Daytona always kind of feels like that kind of a watch to me, like on my wrist.
8:37
SPEAKER_00: And the newest generation like isn't that far off of that either.
8:41
SPEAKER_00: Um the the my you know my my big hang up, uh so I actually I owned um four different Daytona references of the previous generation, and um my my biggest niggle with that watch was always the shape of the hour markers, which are which are kind of rotund and portly, they're kind of boat-shaped.
9:01
SPEAKER_00: And I always really like the elegance of the kind of thinner bar-shaped hour markers of older of previous generation, including uh including yours.
9:10
SPEAKER_00: Uh so when the new 126 generation came out and it had those thinner markers, it was kind of an instant, like, oh, this is this is kind of what I've been waiting for.
9:18
SPEAKER_00: Uh like this is the kind of uh Daytona.
9:21
SPEAKER_00: And I've had various precious metal references as well.
9:25
SPEAKER_00: And uh I find that I don't wear them enough because it feels you know, the precious metal kind of feels like more of a special occasion type thing.
9:31
SPEAKER_00: And I don't want the Daytona to be that.
9:32
SPEAKER_00: Like I am a guy that will wear it with a t-shirt and jeans and backwards hats, and totally you know, it's it's all messy.
9:38
SPEAKER_00: I can see gunk on it right now.
9:40
SPEAKER_00: Like it's just kind of like that's how I like to wear it.
9:42
SPEAKER_00: And if it's steel, I don't feel so bad about it being that, right?
9:45
SPEAKER_02: So it's slightly more resilient as a resort, you know.
9:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or result, rather.
9:50
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
9:51
SPEAKER_00: Uh in the white dial, um, you know, I I I it really comes down to like the the black rings uh around it.
9:58
SPEAKER_00: If the white dial or if the sorry, if the black dial had um like white, pure white rings defining it, subdials instead of a reflective polished surface, I think it'd be a different story.
10:10
SPEAKER_00: That said, I think the black dial of this watch is more photogenic of this in this generation than the white dial.
10:17
SPEAKER_00: So um I I mean I could I could honestly talk for for uh an hour on on just like in my thoughts on the on the Daytona.
10:25
SPEAKER_00: Um but that's that's kind of like personally what what uh what is kind of speaks to me.
10:30
SPEAKER_00: You know, I think when when I think of the Daytona, it's like there's there's never like a perfect one.
10:34
SPEAKER_00: There's always something that I would change.
10:37
SPEAKER_00: And uh the the newest Daytona that was released this year, the bezel on it, uh is uh it's great, it's anthracite, right?
10:46
SPEAKER_00: They call it.
10:46
SPEAKER_00: Uh I care less about that, but what I do love about it, and that I would love to if if this one had um all of the the tachymeter, the numbers of the tachymeter are all situated horizontally, like old school bezels rather than radially, uh like this.
11:02
SPEAKER_00: And and that's one of those things, kind of like the hour markers.
11:05
SPEAKER_00: Like um you notice something's different when you look at it, but you maybe can't quite put your your your finger just on what it is, but it makes a difference in like how it feels overall, like as a whole, you know.
11:16
SPEAKER_00: Rolex are really good at doing that kind of a thing, you know, like it's greater than the sum of its parts, kind of a sure uh kind of a thing.
11:22
SPEAKER_00: So um, so yeah, that's that's that's my story with this thing.
11:25
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I got it after it it it came out, and uh and I'd had um a 116509 full white gold reference with a silver dial and uh before this, and and again it just it didn't get a whole ton of risk time, even though I like that watch quite a bit.
11:43
SPEAKER_00: Um, but and then I kind of traded that um uh with uh with the dealer for for this and uh and something else as as well.
11:51
SPEAKER_00: So um so that's how I ended up with this guy.
11:53
SPEAKER_02: What uh where did you buy the white gold?
11:57
unknown: Where did I get that?
12:00
SPEAKER_02: Was it pre-owned or did you get it new?
12:02
SPEAKER_00: No, it was pre-owned.
12:03
SPEAKER_00: Um I found it like I one of the collector guys that I knew, I think he's based out in California.
12:08
SPEAKER_00: Okay, um, is this who I found it with.
12:11
SPEAKER_00: And I had the 116519, uh, which was on the Oyster Flex before that.
12:17
SPEAKER_00: Uh got it.
12:18
SPEAKER_00: So we did a swap, uh, plus like a little bit of of cash because he had wanted that one, and I wanted to try the full white gold bracelet.
12:25
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah, it's nice to know a lot of different collectors, you know.
12:29
SPEAKER_00: Well, you're around the space long enough, yeah.
12:31
SPEAKER_00: I guess I'm sure you do that.
12:32
SPEAKER_00: You just you you you collect these kind of people that you know and that are on your radar.
12:35
SPEAKER_00: So it's funny.
12:36
SPEAKER_02: I've never done a deal, actually, now that I think about it, between two collectors.
12:40
SPEAKER_02: Like if I were to, you know, for you and I to do a swap of some variation, like I've never done that before.
12:45
SPEAKER_02: I've only worked either with ADs or I've worked with pre-owned dealers.
12:50
SPEAKER_02: Um it's kind of funny.
12:52
SPEAKER_02: So the one on your wrist was pre-owned as well then.
12:56
SPEAKER_02: Um or did you get that one at a boutique?
13:00
SPEAKER_00: Uh this was uh yeah, it it was new, uh in a part of kind of a broader trade trade deal.
13:07
SPEAKER_00: Okay, cool, cool.
13:08
SPEAKER_00: Nice.
13:09
SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, I've I've enjoyed it, and it's uh you know, it gets uh more wrist time than the precious metal ones did.
13:15
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
13:15
SPEAKER_02: Do you have a particular go-to AD for Rolex?
13:19
SPEAKER_00: Um, I know a few.
13:21
SPEAKER_00: Um, and I know some of the people that work there uh at at some uh at a couple different places, but um but yeah, I'm generally not a guy that's you know uh I don't it's not like I buy all kinds of modern Rolexes and that kind of stuff.
13:35
SPEAKER_00: And right um so you know I try not I'm not like the guy calling in favors or when people find out like casually what I do, you know, like you know, like uh my wife's friend's husband or something, and then I get a check, hey, can you get me one of the like you know, I'm not I'm not that guy.
13:51
SPEAKER_00: And and frankly, I don't think anybody can.
13:53
SPEAKER_02: Somebody recently reached out to me and said, Hey man, I'm really interested in an AP.
13:57
SPEAKER_02: Can you get me this AP?
13:59
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I can't even get an AP.
14:01
SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you talking about?
14:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's not how it works.
14:04
SPEAKER_00: You know, I play pretty much by the same rules as everyone else, I just know more people, you know, so I have like kind of more opportunities um to uh to to do trade deals to do all that kind of stuff.
14:15
SPEAKER_00: Sure.
14:16
SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
14:16
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, cool, man.
14:18
SPEAKER_02: So how long has it been?
14:19
SPEAKER_02: How long have you own that one?
14:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh let's see, this came out in 2023 and I had it by the end of that year.
14:26
SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
14:26
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, right, right.
14:27
SPEAKER_02: 2023.
14:28
SPEAKER_02: So it's got like the thinner inner uh like the thicker.
14:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's the other kind of you know, I guess controversial thing around it, right?
14:39
SPEAKER_00: Because uh the bezel itself has a liner around it, um, which is also kind of akin to the older references um that accepted an insert um into that assembly.
14:49
SPEAKER_00: Uh so this one has that kind of you know, Rolex called a protective kind of ring around it.
14:54
SPEAKER_00: It's the same metal as the case in this instance, and because that thinned out the bezel a little bit, they kind of reproportioned the rings defining the subdials.
15:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
15:03
SPEAKER_00: Which I think in pictures is always kind of like looked maybe a little funny, especially right off the bat, but in person it makes a lot more sense, I think.
15:10
SPEAKER_02: I really want to get my zenith pressure tested because like I kind of like want to wear it on vacation and wear it in the water.
15:17
SPEAKER_02: You know, I mean, you've got the screw-down pushers, obviously.
15:20
SPEAKER_02: So like I I I need to get that looked at.
15:22
SPEAKER_02: Um, no idea what that would cost, but um, I genuinely want that thing to be functional for sure.
15:28
SPEAKER_00: I think that's a great idea.
15:29
SPEAKER_00: That's uh that's such a great watch to wear.
15:31
SPEAKER_00: And in and that that's that particular reference set, I think, is one that looks better with wear because the bezel is polished, obviously.
15:40
SPEAKER_00: So the the more kind of little dings and scratches and whatever you get on it, the the more kind of like muted it looks and yeah.
15:47
SPEAKER_02: I mean, when that thing's like really polished and clean, which I think I got uh I mean mine uh was pre-owned, clearly, um, and I bought it, uh it it appears to be completely unpolished, right?
15:57
SPEAKER_02: Like it still has all its uh sharpness to a degree, uh, given that it's 30 years old.
16:03
SPEAKER_02: But um yeah, what's funny about it is if you're in the right light or the right setting, or like you have something black over your head and you're looking down at it, the bezel can look black and the indice or the subdial, I keep saying indices, the subdials can turn black to where it almost looks just like your watch, and which is kind of a wild thing to experience because you're like, oh well, maybe I wouldn't mind a modern one after all, because it kind of looks like this, but then you rotate your wrist 20 degrees and it goes.
16:37
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it really just depends if you if you want that kind of you know, that polished bezel look or or a black bezel look.
16:45
SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't obviously there's no like one right answer or anything like that.
16:48
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I think uh they both have their place.
16:51
SPEAKER_00: And you know, like I said, I'm I'm kind of on the cusp of of adding one of those to to my collection as well.
16:57
SPEAKER_00: So I I would hopefully we'll be able to do kind of like a side-by-side retro review type thing with um uh with the with the older one, I which which would be great.
17:05
SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, so you're going white dial TBD on that.
17:10
SPEAKER_02: Okay, you're not doing uh Patrizie.
17:13
SPEAKER_00: Nah, there's there's kind of a couple on my radar right now.
17:16
SPEAKER_00: Uh okay.
17:17
SPEAKER_02: So we'll see.
17:18
SPEAKER_02: So uh well, TBD.
17:20
SPEAKER_02: Stay tuned, folks, including me.
17:22
SPEAKER_02: I can't wait.
17:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
17:25
SPEAKER_00: Dude, speaking of chronographs, uh I gotta get your your thoughts on the the new Tudor uh Bumblebee Chrono 39.
17:34
SPEAKER_00: Did you see this thing?
17:35
SPEAKER_00: What do you think about it?
17:35
SPEAKER_00: I saw it on television, in fact.
17:37
SPEAKER_02: Uh on television, you saw it on the telly.
17:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I saw it uh on the broadcast of F1.
17:43
SPEAKER_02: Um it was uh really yeah, one of the Racing Bulls um uh pit guys had it or the pit the head what what's his name?
17:52
SPEAKER_02: I can't remember his name.
17:53
SPEAKER_02: Anyway, they showed him and the guy was like wearing it at the race.
17:56
SPEAKER_02: Oh, cool, which was cool.
17:58
SPEAKER_02: Um I I like it.
18:00
SPEAKER_02: I mean, yellow is a uh to use, I think it was uh I don't remember whose terminology it was.
18:06
SPEAKER_02: They called yellow a big swing.
18:08
SPEAKER_02: I think it might have been Tony Traina, but yeah, I'm not a yellow fan.
18:12
SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't wear yellow t-shirts.
18:15
SPEAKER_02: Uh it makes me look jaundist.
18:17
SPEAKER_02: Um, so uh yellow is not really my dial color, but should they come out with I used to own the tutor Black Bay Chrono uh and just found it to be just not uncomfortable.
18:30
SPEAKER_02: That that's uh a bit drastic, but it was thick, it would dig into the back of my hand a bit.
18:37
SPEAKER_02: Um in fact, the Black Bay 41, you know, the Black Bay Black with the ETA original, I had that one, and that crown would sort of dig into the back of my hand as well.
18:48
SPEAKER_02: So not unlike the chrono.
18:50
SPEAKER_02: So I ended up moving on.
18:52
SPEAKER_02: I think I owned the chrono for maybe six months, and I was just like, I can't do this.
18:56
SPEAKER_02: But I loved the look.
18:58
SPEAKER_02: I like the twin register, I think it's a really cool look.
19:01
SPEAKER_02: Uh, by all accounts, this new chrono wears much more like a black bay 58, which is a sweet spot for 99% of the people out there.
19:11
SPEAKER_02: As a Black Bay 54 owner, I find that to be even better wearing, but there's no way we're getting a chronograph at 37 mil, which is totally 54 is dope though.
19:20
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's just it's got all that pedigree and heritage look and and just vintage vibe.
19:26
SPEAKER_02: And every time I look down at it, I'm like, oh yeah, 5508, of course.
19:31
SPEAKER_02: Save a hundred grand, but um, whatever.
19:34
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I think it's awesome.
19:36
SPEAKER_02: And I can't foresee a world where they wouldn't issue that with other dial colors.
19:41
SPEAKER_02: I just hope it's not that blue that they just released because that is shiny.
19:47
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I'm I'm I'm with you there.
19:49
SPEAKER_00: I'm also not like a huge yellow person, uh, but I do think you know, if it was like uh like a fance yellow or uh uh speed yellow or something like that, you know, it was something matte, yeah, exactly.
20:01
SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is just I don't know, it's just so the vibrant and bright yellow that I'm like, you know.
20:08
SPEAKER_00: Uh but if it was that more kind of subdued yellow, then well, I don't know how I'd feel about it.
20:13
SPEAKER_00: I'm also not a huge yellow guy though, like you know.
20:15
SPEAKER_02: Well, if people are kind of like, why would you do this?
20:18
SPEAKER_02: You know, like which I'm sure someone out there has said uh publicly, I haven't read any negativity actually yet.
20:25
SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think it's because like look, when they came out with like the pink dial chrono for like the Miami soccer team, um, and they've taken some swings with that watch with colors and have seemingly done very well.
20:39
SPEAKER_02: Now I think the fashion in which they release them, sort of like hush hush, or this is for David Beckham only or or for Messi only or whatever.
20:48
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think that maybe sort of commands a different attention.
20:52
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, um I I like it.
20:55
SPEAKER_02: I like it.
20:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I do too.
20:57
SPEAKER_00: And and sure, yeah, surely we'll get a white one, a black one, and whatever, you know, just more kind of standard, standard one.
21:03
SPEAKER_00: So it's a good one.
21:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh yeah, they'll be uh yeah, they'll be high.
21:08
SPEAKER_02: And a hell of a price point, right?
21:10
SPEAKER_02: Like so approachable with a robust sort of movement, let's call it.
21:14
SPEAKER_02: I think it's still using the B01, right?
21:17
SPEAKER_02: From Brightling or no?
21:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh it's a very it's yeah, it's a it's a basic because it's it's the same one that was in the regular Black Bay 50.
21:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
21:26
SPEAKER_00: Right.
21:27
SPEAKER_00: So it's like uh Black Bay chronograph, yeah.
21:30
SPEAKER_02: Um and you just wonder, too, like I think it's not just Tudor, I can't remember who else, but by making it thinner, you're just moving the dial closer to the sapphire oftentimes, and things like that.
21:43
SPEAKER_02: So you're move moving the movement higher in the case.
21:47
SPEAKER_02: And you just kind of wonder like, why wasn't that ever done initially?
21:52
SPEAKER_02: Or was it no one thought of it?
21:53
SPEAKER_02: I I just don't know.
21:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I think that's that's a good point, right?
21:56
SPEAKER_00: Like, the uh uh there there is a way that they Could have done this from the get-go.
22:01
SPEAKER_00: The Black Bay chronograph could have always been 14 millimeters.
22:05
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
22:05
SPEAKER_00: You know, it's so it was obviously a kind of a design and aesthetic choice around how they wanted the dial to look, but you know, which is which is fine.
22:11
SPEAKER_00: That's their prerogative.
22:12
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but yeah, I I don't mind a dial that's like kind of a little bit closer.
22:15
SPEAKER_00: I think this would be even really cool if it just had like a flat crystal.
22:18
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, sure.
22:20
SPEAKER_00: Because this still has kind of kind of the domed crystal.
22:22
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it needs it now to get to make room for the hands faster.
22:25
SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't know.
22:26
SPEAKER_02: And then what the slimmer hands, too?
22:28
SPEAKER_02: Didn't they like thin up the hands so they don't obscure the subdials quite as much?
22:32
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that I have a harder time discerning, to be perfectly frank with you.
22:36
SPEAKER_00: I do.
22:37
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
22:37
SPEAKER_02: Uh like I looked at at the two of them side by side, and it's uh maybe when you're well, it becomes a proportion thing too, because they didn't just make the hands smaller because the whole watch is smaller, so it's like yeah, it's kind of honestly it reminds me somewhat similar to the uh the ingenure coming out in a blue dial and a 35 millimeter.
22:57
SPEAKER_02: And it's like by all accounts, a lot of people love the way that watch fits.
23:01
SPEAKER_02: And of course, that watch is incredibly comfortable, but there's just something off.
23:06
SPEAKER_02: I think the dial aperture is just too small for me.
23:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all those things that you they're all the little details that you know you that all kind of add up, and it can be something like that.
23:16
SPEAKER_00: The size of the dial aperture is something that not a lot of people think about, but that make a huge difference in like how big the watch visually it looks.
23:24
SPEAKER_02: Yep.
23:25
SPEAKER_00: And legibility for that matter, and and legibility, all that kind of stuff.
23:28
SPEAKER_00: Uh, so yeah, I'm um I'm curious uh at how this will evolve.
23:34
SPEAKER_00: I like that they've opened up this development direction for uh for the watch, and I think it's a healthy thing for them to do overall.
23:40
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, uh, you know, born to dare.
23:43
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, yeah, that's true.
23:44
SPEAKER_00: Born to dare exactly, yeah, totally all yellow.
23:48
SPEAKER_02: But that's why um that's why Tudor is what it is, you know.
23:52
SPEAKER_02: I I like to refer to it as Rolex's skunkworks.
23:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there you go.
23:57
SPEAKER_02: That's uh like it's just they are the daring one, right?
24:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, I think that's that's kind of how they use it to segue into more of kind of like a lifestyle territory, you know.
24:08
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, you know, just I as we record this just this morning, I think they had some news around aligning with like some runners.
24:15
SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
24:15
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I haven't really looked looked at it or so uh or read the the the release that uh that I was sent uh but I was like, like are we talking ultra marathon folks or are we talking about um it looks like maybe uh let's see here it's like the thing is you know tutor goes goes running.
24:36
SPEAKER_00: So I think they've aligned with um Tudor hits the trail with the world's top running athletes.
24:42
SPEAKER_00: So it has new like trail running athletes that are now like a part of the brand.
24:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
24:49
SPEAKER_00: Uh let's see here.
24:50
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, these let's see here.
24:51
SPEAKER_00: These guys run 171 kilometers.
24:53
SPEAKER_02: There you go.
24:54
SPEAKER_02: Ultra marathon.
24:55
SPEAKER_02: I thought so.
24:56
SPEAKER_02: So well, here here we go.
24:58
SPEAKER_02: Um what watch are they gonna be wearing?
25:00
SPEAKER_02: Because you would think that's like a Richard Meal sort of lightweight, because God knows you don't want to weigh your wrist down.
25:08
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I wonder, you know, it would be really cool if they came out with some like super lightweight, you know, Black Bay 54 on titanium, or maybe like a you know, like a um I don't even know.
25:20
SPEAKER_00: What would you even what would you even do?
25:21
SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
25:21
SPEAKER_00: Maybe like a like a smaller fixed lug uh fixed FXD thing.
25:26
SPEAKER_00: Um just for like just for athletes, but it's like a little maybe lower profile or something like that.
25:31
SPEAKER_02: That makes more sense, yeah.
25:33
SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, I mean athletes uh these are obviously like world-class little athletes doing this kind of stuff, so I'm sure they have their own kind of sophisticated gadgets and stuff that they're wearing uh to track their.
25:44
SPEAKER_02: I think if they did like a carbon-cased FXD with the Pelagos blue dial, that'd be killer.
25:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it maybe like just slightly smaller, right?
25:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, then I think that would that would be a good one.
25:58
SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine that and carbon with like that brighter blue?
26:03
SPEAKER_00: That would work well.
26:04
SPEAKER_02: That would work really well.
26:05
SPEAKER_02: I think it'd be a really great combination.
26:07
SPEAKER_02: Or titanium, I guess, but like carbon would be for running, I would think.
26:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd run it, I'd give it a try.
26:14
SPEAKER_00: I don't run uh 171 kilometers in one go.
26:19
SPEAKER_00: Because you do 200?
26:20
SPEAKER_00: Because I do 200.
26:22
SPEAKER_00: Uh let's see.
26:24
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I run a little bit here, you know.
26:26
SPEAKER_00: I I I I run about 30 miles a week.
26:28
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I but I I don't wear a mechanical watch while I run.
26:32
SPEAKER_00: I have, but I I would like that's what I use an Apple Watch for.
26:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
26:35
SPEAKER_00: And so I can keep like my uh my heart rate, my my um, you know, my distance of how far my pace, all that kind of stuff, yeah, to to a more or less approximately accurate like degree, right?
26:48
SPEAKER_00: Um so that's that like is that true?
26:50
SPEAKER_00: Is an Apple Watch not to I mean I don't know if it's like as is as accurate if I was doing like um like a chest band for the heart rate or whatever.
26:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but like it gets me in the ballpark.
27:00
SPEAKER_00: I wear it like kind of tight on the wrist.
27:01
SPEAKER_00: I have very light skin, so I think it it can get like a decent read on my on my heart rate, which is really like the most important, you know, because I want to train like with my heart rate in a certain level, like in a certain zone.
27:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I kind of want to make sure that I'm keeping it in that uh in the is like a Garmin more accurate than an Apple Watch.
27:18
SPEAKER_00: I think they all have the like the same thing similar technology, like yeah, like if you got a bunch of tattoos on your wrist or or a darker skin color, if you wear it kind of loose or sweat gets in between there, like it can affect like the accuracy.
27:29
SPEAKER_02: Oh, no way.
27:30
SPEAKER_00: Tattoos even wow, yeah.
27:32
SPEAKER_00: But it you know, for me, like again, I'm not some elite athlete that's trained for for whatever.
27:36
SPEAKER_00: So if it can like kind of keep me in the ballpark of where I want to be, then that's like uh I'm more of a power lifter myself.
27:42
SPEAKER_02: So um I could tell you're huge.
27:45
SPEAKER_02: I'm in bulking season right now.
27:46
SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you could tell.
27:48
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
27:49
SPEAKER_00: You've got a you've got a protein meter on your uh watch, right?
27:52
SPEAKER_02: What is funny?
27:53
SPEAKER_02: I I guess I never shared what I was wearing, but um just the G Shock baby.
27:57
SPEAKER_02: All right, I like the high low here.
27:59
SPEAKER_00: That's like a murdered out uh G Shock.
28:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it doesn't have like the uh the red and blue on the dial or the face.
28:06
SPEAKER_02: Um it's pretty cool.
28:07
SPEAKER_02: I got this from Amazon, I want to say during COVID, probably 2020.
28:13
SPEAKER_02: All right, you know, I felt it was uh kind of you know a COVID-esque watch, you know, sort of the apocalypse feeling in 2020.
28:23
SPEAKER_02: So I was like, what better to get than a G-Shock?
28:27
SPEAKER_02: How often do you wear it?
28:29
SPEAKER_02: Uh good question.
28:31
SPEAKER_02: Um if I I so I haven't been on my bike in like a year and a half, but this was almost exclusively like my cycling watch.
28:39
SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, just because like if I god forbid ever crashed, I didn't want to like screw something up.
28:44
SPEAKER_02: Like I know Zach Pinha like wears anything and everything on his bike, but yeah, he's a psycho though.
28:50
SPEAKER_02: He's just below pro level, I think, as far as cycling goes.
28:54
SPEAKER_00: Um we love Zach, by the way, around here and totally giving a shit about that.
28:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, a hundred percent.
28:59
SPEAKER_02: Like, but like legit, he's like probably sub just under pro.
29:05
SPEAKER_02: Um dudes dudes built for the bike.
29:07
SPEAKER_02: Uh whereas I did it more for just cardio and enjoyment and sightseeing around San Diego.
29:14
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I mean I would do some big miles.
29:16
SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, my average ride, I would say during COVID was 24 to 40 miles, and then you know, somewhere in that neighborhood, and then once in a blue moon, I'd do like 50, 60.
29:29
SPEAKER_02: Um, but I've never done a century, never ridden it 100 miles.
29:33
SPEAKER_02: I've always wanted to.
29:34
SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, yeah, for sure.
29:39
SPEAKER_02: Um, but right now I just don't have the time, you know, um, with with the little one and everything, and um juggling, traveling, and and all the rest of that.
29:49
SPEAKER_02: But um I really do want to get back on the bike.
29:51
SPEAKER_02: But I just I I always prided myself historically on having a lot of hobbies, you know, watching F1.
29:58
SPEAKER_02: I like photography, I rode bikes, I played golf, I like to surf, I love driving cars, you know, and it's like and then throw in the watches and the watch meetups and dining out and traveling and you know, it's all this stuff, right?
30:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, snowboarding if I could ever find the time.
30:15
SPEAKER_02: And now it's just kind of like okay, I wonder if it does make sense to sort of pair some of this back and uh just to like put more focus into like a couple like fewer amounts of things.
30:27
SPEAKER_00: Well, I only have so much time, right?
30:30
SPEAKER_02: Well, it's less about that and more just like not the FOMO aspect of well, God, I haven't ridden my bike, and now I feel bad because every time I step into my garage and see it hanging on the wall, I feel like it's just the reminder of and then sometimes you know, once in a blue moon, I'll step on the scale and also be reminded that I haven't ridden.
30:49
SPEAKER_02: Um so you know, it's a combination of things.
30:52
SPEAKER_00: Well, you're a dad now, so that means you can, you know, you can let yourself go a little bit.
30:56
SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it's funny, I didn't gain that much weight as much as what kills me is the travel.
31:04
SPEAKER_02: And I've I've like, you know, because you're going out, you're eating, you're drinking, you're partying, whatever.
31:10
SPEAKER_02: You know, it gets to you quick.
31:12
SPEAKER_02: And it just yeah, it and that's really it.
31:15
SPEAKER_02: But I've I've really kind of leaned into this year, especially, is the hotel gym, and just like really making sure that I'm like don't plan anything before like 11 a.m.
31:27
SPEAKER_02: so that I can like really wake up, get my coffee, go to the gym.
31:31
SPEAKER_02: You know, I'm not running 30 miles a week, but you know, I'll I'll you know run for 20 minutes and then get in and lift, or you know, so I've got like an hour or something in the gym.
31:41
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, love a good hotel gym.
31:43
SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, it just I don't know, it just makes such a big difference.
31:46
SPEAKER_00: Like ironically, I it was probably becoming a dad that kind of like made me think about my own health moral.
31:53
SPEAKER_00: Sure.
31:53
SPEAKER_00: And like exactly well, and like you know, I wanted to be able to play catch and do all the active things, you know.
32:01
SPEAKER_00: Cause when you have a kid, you you think about all these things that you want to want to start doing.
32:06
SPEAKER_02: And uh I got a much start, I got a much later start than you did.
32:09
SPEAKER_00: Uh to I had like you know, I was I was I had I had let myself go, and it was really becoming that that made me kind of think like, oh, I gotta get my I gotta get my ass back in shape if I wanna I didn't know Chubby Blake.
32:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean I don't know what you call it, but yeah, I was I was definitely I was uh you know larger um okay on the larger side and then uh but I did crow like I ran cross country in high school so I knew how to r get myself into rescue.
32:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
32:35
SPEAKER_00: Um so I did that, and obviously you can't outrun a bad diet, so it was like that in in the kitchen and then you know running and uh those two things, but you know, it can't be like a fad thing because other it can't be something that's just you can gonna do for a few weeks or a month or two, lose a few pounds and then be like, great, I'm done.
32:51
SPEAKER_00: Like it has to be how you think about your your life as a as a whole, and and things that you can sustain over the course of like years and decades.
33:00
SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, you're always gonna be battling um you know, the scale, the fork, the you know, whatever however you want to.
33:05
SPEAKER_02: I mean, that that is my life, honestly.
33:07
SPEAKER_02: Like I I get into these routines and it's great, and then I hit the road and it gets disrupted, and then I come home, and then it's recovery like from a work standpoint, not a body standpoint.
33:17
SPEAKER_02: Well, sometimes a body more of a liver recovery standpoint.
33:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, no, I know, I know what you mean.
33:21
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I've I've actually been a lot more like top of mind too, as to like, okay, maybe maybe just like cap it at two or three drinks.
33:29
SPEAKER_02: Like, we don't really need to go.
33:31
SPEAKER_02: And I'm not actually historically one to get that hung over, really.
33:35
SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I've been blessed with that my entire life, where I could drink five IPAs and be fine the next day, you know.
33:42
SPEAKER_02: Um now not so much, but um Yeah, it's never easy as you get older.
33:47
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
33:48
SPEAKER_00: I've I've yeah, it it's it's it's and that's another thing too.
33:51
SPEAKER_00: The kid, like how I even think about my long term, like I can see where like I've got cut like kind of I don't drink all that often these days.
33:59
SPEAKER_00: And okay.
34:00
SPEAKER_00: Uh and you know, I could see a future where I just like it's not that big a deal at all.
34:04
SPEAKER_00: Like I don't drink at all, right?
34:06
SPEAKER_02: I thought about quitting at 50.
34:08
SPEAKER_00: At 50, that's the that's the that's the number.
34:11
SPEAKER_00: I've I I've thought about it.
34:12
SPEAKER_02: Just because it's like, all right, you're halfway to a hundred.
34:16
SPEAKER_02: Though you've only been drinking, I guess legally for what is that, 29 years.
34:21
SPEAKER_02: Um I I just thought about 50 just because by that point my daughter will be I don't know, four or five.
34:29
SPEAKER_02: And like I just think that like I don't know, like I've I've done it, you know?
34:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like it's kind of like watch ownership.
34:38
SPEAKER_02: Like sometimes you're just like, okay, I've experienced it.
34:40
SPEAKER_02: I I don't need it, you know?
34:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
34:43
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, we'll see.
34:44
SPEAKER_02: I got four years.
34:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, you don't need it.
34:47
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's uh it's it's when when I'm 50, let's see here.
34:51
SPEAKER_00: My my birthday's tomorrow, actually.
34:53
SPEAKER_00: Uh as we're no way.
34:55
SPEAKER_00: Well, happy birthday.
34:56
SPEAKER_00: Uh well, thank you.
34:56
SPEAKER_00: I turned 43, so that'll be seven years.
35:00
SPEAKER_00: In seven years, my son will be just about to turn 21.
35:05
SPEAKER_02: Oh, so maybe maybe you go out with one.
35:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I go hang with all him and his 21-year-old buddies.
35:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, get wasted one good time with your son.
35:15
SPEAKER_02: That's then he'll probably say, Dad, I never want to see you like that again.
35:19
SPEAKER_02: And you're saying, No problem.
35:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no problem.
35:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
35:23
SPEAKER_02: That's actually sounds kind of fun.
35:25
SPEAKER_02: Like, that's cool.
35:28
SPEAKER_00: That's not that long though, seven years.
35:30
SPEAKER_02: God, I have three and a half.
35:31
SPEAKER_02: I'm doing the math.
35:33
SPEAKER_02: You're old, you're too old.
35:36
SPEAKER_02: A hundred percent.
35:37
SPEAKER_02: Trust me, I'm reminded every day when you're like, Oh yeah, like I want to be healthy to throw the ball and stuff.
35:42
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I want to tie my shoe.
35:45
SPEAKER_02: Are you kidding me?
35:46
SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm wearing loafers now.
35:47
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh yeah, dude.
35:49
SPEAKER_00: Bend in the back some, you know, bending down, you're tying your shoes some days, all that kind of stuff.
35:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you feel it.
35:56
SPEAKER_02: You feel it.
35:56
SPEAKER_02: So funny.
35:57
SPEAKER_00: I think as a whole, though, we're doing pretty well.
35:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, totally.
36:00
SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not, I'm not sweating it.
36:02
SPEAKER_02: Oh, although, yeah, I mean, I I feel pretty good.
36:05
SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, there are the the subtle reminders.
36:08
SPEAKER_02: This morning I woke up with like a sore back, and I'm like, what did I do yesterday?
36:13
SPEAKER_02: You know, anyway, let's uh maybe maybe you know uh get off this path.
36:19
SPEAKER_02: I doubt people want to listen to our ailments, but um our wisdom uh so this past weekend.
36:27
SPEAKER_02: Um, for those listening, unfortunately Blake had some trouble with the internet, but uh yeah uh had to stream the F1 race on his phone, no less.
36:36
SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's true.
36:38
SPEAKER_02: You missed the pit coverage with the bumblebee, obviously.
36:40
SPEAKER_02: So yeah, which is totally fine.
36:44
SPEAKER_02: Uh but this race in Monaco, okay, so yeah, I I made a comment, I think maybe even on the F1 uh Instagram.
36:52
SPEAKER_02: So I don't remember what the post was, but it was like, oh, a beautiful day here, and this was like Thursday, Friday.
36:57
SPEAKER_02: So I was like, oh wow, it's gorgeous.
36:59
SPEAKER_02: It must rain on Sunday.
37:00
SPEAKER_02: And then someone replied, nothing in the forecast.
37:03
SPEAKER_02: Ended up being a gorgeous day in Monaco.
37:07
SPEAKER_02: My one of my favorite weekends, like I said, Spa's my favorite track.
37:10
SPEAKER_02: There, I do have a soft spot for Monaco as well.
37:13
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I just love the I mean June on the Mediterranean, it looked gorgeous, like the overhead shots.
37:20
SPEAKER_00: You just wanted to be there, yes, yes, the whole time.
37:23
SPEAKER_02: The water is so crystal clear in a way that like it doesn't always appear that way, probably because of the cloud cover, right?
37:30
SPEAKER_02: And the often rain.
37:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
37:32
SPEAKER_02: Um Max didn't even get off the line.
37:36
SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, what's up?
37:37
SPEAKER_00: I was uh what I feel terrible.
37:39
SPEAKER_02: He did he did the Kimmy walk right right off the track.
37:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would have yeah, he just like went home.
37:46
SPEAKER_00: Probably to like uh you know to get to get on the sim and uh yeah, he or destroy a vase of some sort.
37:53
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, who knows?
37:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I but he feels he seems kind of like over over a lot, but man, you know, he custled that car uh around that track in qualifying.
38:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, honestly, just like incredible.
38:06
SPEAKER_00: Him and Kimmy watching them were just like on another level, it seemed uh from everybody else.
38:11
SPEAKER_00: And you know, obviously Max is dealing with a Red Bull, uh, which now, according to the FIA, have the strongest engine in terms of the internal combustion component, actually.
38:23
SPEAKER_00: So um, and not Mercedes.
38:25
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, the the adjustment benefits, all that kind of stuff, the adjuo will be given to Mercedes-powered cars, Ferrari powered to what extent I don't think is quite clear yet.
38:35
SPEAKER_00: But I thought that was really interesting that uh right out of the gates, this Red Bull Ford developed engine is you know so strong, has been so strong.
38:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I I still think everybody on the grid would say the Mercedes engine is the best engine.
38:48
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but for however whatever metric they're using to judge it, you know, they're saying that that's the str like uh the internal combustion component of it is the strongest engine on the grid.
38:57
SPEAKER_00: So you know, hats off to Red Bull and Ford.
39:00
SPEAKER_00: You know, that could be Horner's crowning achievement at the end of the day, like getting that thing developed and in the car, you know.
39:07
SPEAKER_00: So hats off to them.
39:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the race itself was was um entertaining, boring, and perplexing, I think, are the three words I would I would use.
39:19
SPEAKER_02: Uh the penalties was just it almost seemed like a not a conspiracy, but it was almost just kind of like, oh, well, nobody's getting past, nothing's happening, so let's see if we can mix this up, is how it started.
39:30
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:31
SPEAKER_00: I know, right?
39:32
SPEAKER_00: It's uh yeah, all the penalties was crazy, and that's I think came down to how they judge the speed of the cars, which is like um like over like distance traveled over time instead of literally like using a speed gun to measure their speed.
39:47
SPEAKER_00: Uh so they it there's like uh blocks of the grid um of the pit lane, sorry, and and if they if it takes more than X amount of time to cover that distance, then they get dinged with the the speeding.
40:01
SPEAKER_00: And some of the cars they're saying were cutting a corner, which was effectively making that distance shorter, so they weren't technically speeding.
40:08
SPEAKER_02: But I was gonna say, how is it that this percentage of cars could do this in the pit lane?
40:13
SPEAKER_02: I've never before seen something like this.
40:15
SPEAKER_02: But then that makes all the sense of the world.
40:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, you know how tight the pit lane is there.
40:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's so the cars, I think you know, leaving and maybe entering, it's like a corner that they kind of cut a little bit, which I think they do at every track.
40:27
SPEAKER_02: I mean, it must be like speeding by two hundredths of a second or something.
40:32
SPEAKER_00: It was it was 0.1 kilometers per hour for for them, which is what it turned out to be.
40:37
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's insane.
40:39
SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I I think so too.
40:41
SPEAKER_00: Uh the and the only one that really ended up kind of getting, you know, a bum, you know, the bum end of the stick uh because of it is Pierre Gasly, who would have finished on the podium.
40:51
SPEAKER_00: Right.
40:51
SPEAKER_00: Uh, because it was very much a race of attrition.
40:54
SPEAKER_00: Uh and you know, that's just where he netted out.
40:57
SPEAKER_00: Uh so uh, but because of the penalties in the speeding, I think Alpine is going to um appeal it, like uh formally appeal, yeah, and like make their case to the to the FA in um uh Barcelona this uh this weekend.
41:11
SPEAKER_02: So that's wild.
41:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I hate it.
41:13
SPEAKER_02: I mean, Charles crashing out, you know, like that's just he was complaining about his brakes, which actually I don't recall in the broadcast him ever being on the radio complaining about it, but I thought it was a cold tire thing because it was just the one lap, right?
41:29
SPEAKER_02: After the the restart.
41:30
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I think it was cold brakes, uh, probably.
41:33
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but the the but he was saying the rears weren't even working.
41:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
41:39
SPEAKER_00: So he was saying, I think complaining about the brakes, right?
41:41
SPEAKER_00: But then they showed the road in that section, it was like all chocolate like uh like it looked like the road had been kind of like torn apart almost in certain sections.
41:49
SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what they were saying.
41:50
SPEAKER_00: Was that the same section that uh stroll wasn't that turn 19 as well, right?
41:55
SPEAKER_00: Going into Rascass or coming out of it.
41:57
SPEAKER_00: I think it's I don't know.
41:59
SPEAKER_00: I don't I didn't see which exactly what Stroll was, but it was about the same part of the track.
42:02
SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it was the same like issue of the road being like that, like there was no surface right, yeah, like for the tire to to catch on to.
42:11
SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
42:11
SPEAKER_00: It's so weird though.
42:12
SPEAKER_00: So what let me ask you this.
42:14
SPEAKER_00: So after qualifying, and it's uh you know, Kimmy Max 1-2 with both Ferraris right behind them.
42:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so this year the Ferraris have been traditionally very good at off the line, they've got those smaller turbos, so they've were you thinking oh the Ferraris are just gonna whoop like swallow these guys up?
42:31
SPEAKER_00: Or or what how are you thinking the start was gonna go?
42:33
SPEAKER_00: It seems like the other cars have maybe got their start sorted, though.
42:36
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
42:36
SPEAKER_02: But you're talking about the initial start of the race, or you're talking about the streets.
42:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the start of the race.
42:40
SPEAKER_02: Okay, like yeah, the initial start.
42:42
SPEAKER_02: Because I thought Lewis was gonna get him on the restart.
42:45
SPEAKER_00: Um that too, right?
42:47
SPEAKER_00: Because again, the Ferraris generally started better than the Mercedes cars, like just from zero.
42:53
SPEAKER_00: Correct.
42:53
SPEAKER_00: So I thought, oh, this is Lewis's chance.
42:56
SPEAKER_02: Because Max was where he was in two, right?
42:59
SPEAKER_02: So those guys were even further back from Kimmy.
43:03
SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, that's the only reason why on the restart I'm saying, like, I was I was kind of fingers crossed.
43:11
SPEAKER_02: I mean, look, as an IWC fan, I'm pulling for Mercedes.
43:14
SPEAKER_02: Sure.
43:15
SPEAKER_02: As a race fan, I'm pulling for Ferrari.
43:17
SPEAKER_02: I'm a Ferrari man, right?
43:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
43:18
SPEAKER_02: And I've come around on Lewis.
43:20
SPEAKER_02: Like, I did you see that clip by the way?
43:22
SPEAKER_02: Let me interrupt myself for two seconds of Toto looking at the board and being like, oh, I thought we had three drivers there for a second.
43:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
43:30
SPEAKER_02: Did you see that clip?
43:31
SPEAKER_00: I love how proud he still is.
43:32
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
43:33
SPEAKER_00: I just think it's so touching, man.
43:35
SPEAKER_02: I really think it's really beautiful.
43:36
SPEAKER_00: I think he genuinely cares for for these guys, you know, and he fostered Lewis for, you know, obviously, uh six of his um seven championships.
43:47
SPEAKER_00: Uh right, yeah.
43:49
SPEAKER_00: So he like I I think those two have a special like a very strong.
43:53
SPEAKER_02: They've gotta be like uh uh brothers or like uncle nephew type of vibe, you know?
43:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
43:59
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
44:00
SPEAKER_00: Um yeah and it's great to see you know how Toto kind of looks after Kimmy now in brand you know kind of bringing away.
44:08
SPEAKER_00: Well you better obviously like he he saw something in him, you know, I don't know what it was, that uh he's like, nope, this kid is gonna be something special.
44:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and look at him five races in a row.
44:20
SPEAKER_00: Unbelievable.
44:20
SPEAKER_00: It's insane.
44:21
SPEAKER_02: Did you I saw all the metrics of like the youngest to do XYZ, and it was like Vettel, Max, Lewis, Max, and it's now all Antonelli.
44:31
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it was like I think um winning four races in a row, youngest to win a Grand Prix, I think.
44:38
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh there was like I don't know, like nine metrics, and it's all Kimmy Antonelli now.
44:44
SPEAKER_00: We could be witnessing something special uh you know unfold before before us.
44:48
SPEAKER_00: I do think coming in comparisons, yeah.
44:51
SPEAKER_00: Uh but I think coming into these uh these these more kind of traditional European tracks that we're about to will be a good indicator of, you know, because Monaco's like always an outlier.
45:00
SPEAKER_00: There's all these kind of like, well, yeah, but well, yeah, this, you know.
45:05
SPEAKER_02: So well, and then it's also the car, right?
45:08
SPEAKER_02: Everybody wants to say, Well, it's the car, it's the car.
45:11
SPEAKER_02: But look at George.
45:12
SPEAKER_02: George, George has the same car by all accounts.
45:15
SPEAKER_02: Um, no shots of George, but I mean it's and George is like the mature established driver, like for all intents and purposes, you know, he's the one that should be uh you know, head and shoulders out and take everybody else, yeah.
45:28
SPEAKER_00: You know, and and and he's of course kind of in this stage of like I just don't quite get along with this generation of car, whatever it is, you know, I don't know.
45:35
SPEAKER_00: But um uh but for Kimmy to like really just kind of adapt to it, right?
45:39
SPEAKER_00: Just write like this, and uh and then if you if you have the best car, what are you expected to do with it?
45:45
SPEAKER_00: Make the most of it, and that's exactly what he's doing.
45:47
SPEAKER_00: Like he's doing what you would expect somebody with the best car to do, who's also the best driver, right?
45:52
SPEAKER_02: And Kimmy's what this is a sophomore season, right?
45:54
SPEAKER_02: This is a sophomore season, so he's still got that like grit because he still feels obviously like he's got something to prove.
46:02
SPEAKER_02: Because literally, like last year was you know, it wasn't this year as far as his results go.
46:07
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah, um, I think he doesn't know what he doesn't know, and then once you start winning, it's like a there's the momentum, there's the emotional momentum, there's the self-confidence, but then throw in like the Senna comparison where it's almost like I'm just doing whatever I have to do to win this race, you know.
46:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's he's drives with like reckless abandon.
46:28
SPEAKER_00: It's awesome.
46:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if I if I run George off the track, that's a George problem.
46:32
unknown: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
46:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, obviously, it would it's great when when the cars are you know able to when the dri when the drivers are all right there and and they all get to be competitive with each other, and we see great racing as a result.
46:44
SPEAKER_00: Like, I want that.
46:45
SPEAKER_00: I think we all want that.
46:46
SPEAKER_00: Totally.
46:47
SPEAKER_00: You know, so you know, hopefully this weekend in Spain we'll see we'll see more of that, um, which is more kind of like old school style track, um, you know, wide, big runoffs, all that kind of stuff, big sweeping corners.
47:00
SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, the cars should be able to stretch their legs a little bit more.
47:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, I don't know, I don't know how the energy situation is going to play out.
47:08
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, I think I saw they have I think there's four like straight line areas on the track uh this year that they'll be able to open up the front and rear wings.
47:16
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, hopefully, yeah, I want to see the cars racing in and amongst each other up front, you know, whether it's on the same team or or a different team.
47:25
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I do think that the um the McLaren will probably look better in Spain than they're gonna be.
47:33
SPEAKER_02: I'm just feeling for that guy.
47:34
SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, going from championship winner to like middle of the pack, which is kind of where he's existed most of his career, right?
47:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I mean look, he got that chip, so yeah, he's you can tell you can tell he has like kind of this like a load off of him now.
47:51
SPEAKER_00: Like okay.
47:52
SPEAKER_00: I got my I got my dub for the drivers championship, and uh, you know, I can I can go out there and and still perform, but he doesn't seem like as high strung tense as he had in the past, I guess.
48:05
SPEAKER_00: And I'm not even gonna be a little bit more than that.
48:08
SPEAKER_02: That's why.
48:10
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm sure they're getting along better now.
48:12
SPEAKER_02: Uh sure.
48:14
SPEAKER_00: Look, it's still a long season, so I mean, look at Piastri last season.
48:17
SPEAKER_02: Um what do you think the relationship is between Charles and Lewis?
48:22
SPEAKER_02: Do you find them to be close?
48:24
SPEAKER_02: Or sort of just like, hey man, we're here, we're just gonna do our own thing.
48:28
SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know.
48:30
SPEAKER_00: I think they they both seem a little tough to read, and I think that's probably intentional.
48:35
SPEAKER_00: Uh and I think Lewis seems very kind of like closed off for the most part.
48:39
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
48:40
SPEAKER_00: Like uh, like I like I don't know.
48:43
SPEAKER_00: I I don't have a sense of like what he's maybe like behind closed doors or what kind of a person he is because he seems so like um just measured in how he responds to everything, and obviously through many years of training and doing all this kind of stuff, right?
48:57
SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I feel like his uh his celebrity to some degree has almost eclipsed him being a driver, if that makes sense.
49:05
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, almost it's and it's not because of Kardashians and all that stuff, it's really just him.
49:11
SPEAKER_02: Like this is pre-Kim, all that.
49:13
SPEAKER_02: Like uh it just seems almost like he's like he's the celebrity of the sport, so to speak.
49:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
49:23
SPEAKER_02: Like even if you're like doing a grid walk, it's like Lewis is like almost like in a different category than the rest of the drivers on the grid.
49:32
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
49:32
SPEAKER_00: He's from an aura standpoint.
49:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's true.
49:36
SPEAKER_00: And but I think he I think it's by like by design that he is kind of like you you can't penetrate that, like it just kind of is what it is.
49:44
SPEAKER_02: Because he's a purple Jedi, or well, yeah, right.
49:47
SPEAKER_00: He's he's but look at like the you know, the fits that he comes to the track with, all that kind of stuff.
49:51
SPEAKER_00: Like I think that's all designed to kind of put up this this image of who he is and all that kind of stuff, but yeah, like just chilling with him, like behind closed doors.
49:59
SPEAKER_00: What's like I have no idea what he might be.
50:01
SPEAKER_00: Whereas, like, you know, Max, I could probably he's probably exactly the same, no matter what.
50:07
SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like you're getting exactly who he is all the time, and that's that, which is great.
50:11
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and and maybe some of the other guys too.
50:13
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but uh, but with Lewis, it's I don't know.
50:17
SPEAKER_00: I don't know, man.
50:18
SPEAKER_02: I um well, most of these guys have YouTube channels now, right?
50:21
SPEAKER_02: So you can like follow Carlos signs, you can follow Charles Leclerc, like and maybe even Lando.
50:26
SPEAKER_02: And it's like they do seem like super approachable, like Carlos.
50:30
SPEAKER_02: Like, I want to play golf with that guy, like he just like seems like the real deal.
50:34
SPEAKER_00: Seems fine, yeah.
50:35
SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, you know, Lewis was on a hot ones episode.
50:39
SPEAKER_00: Was he last year, maybe?
50:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think he was.
50:42
SPEAKER_00: Um just remember I had to have seen that.
50:45
SPEAKER_02: Like, uh, that's a show I don't miss, actually.
50:47
SPEAKER_00: And even even um, even that, it's a little bit hard to like you can tell there's still a little bit of a guard up.
50:53
SPEAKER_00: Um, but he does let down maybe a little bit uh more.
50:57
SPEAKER_00: So definitely find that.
50:58
SPEAKER_02: If uh we'll link it in the I got yeah, I gotta yeah, I gotta pull that up, see if I saw that one.
51:03
SPEAKER_02: I I'm sure I did, especially if it was Lewis, right?
51:06
SPEAKER_02: Like, not even just hot ones, but hot ones with Lewis.
51:09
SPEAKER_02: It's like, yeah, I'm not missing this.
51:11
SPEAKER_02: Hot ones with Lewis?
51:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll have to give that a quick Google.
51:14
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I think he was already a Ferrari driver.
51:16
SPEAKER_00: I think it was last year uh that that he did it.
51:18
SPEAKER_00: Oh funny.
51:18
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
51:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
51:19
SPEAKER_02: Uh you think you think his competitive nature brought out the hey, don't make mine quite as spicy.
51:27
SPEAKER_02: I gotta look good here.
51:29
SPEAKER_00: Well, he's he's he is vegan, I think, or vegetarian.
51:33
SPEAKER_00: So I think he does the the vegan wings.
51:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the yeah.
51:36
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the cauliflower or whatever.
51:38
SPEAKER_00: Which which people do.
51:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, tons of people have done it.
51:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
51:42
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
51:42
SPEAKER_00: I yeah.
51:44
SPEAKER_00: Traditionally, it's always been like Daniel Ricardo's the guy that I would like go go to the pub with and like cut loose, right?
51:50
SPEAKER_00: And then have a great time probably doing it.
51:53
SPEAKER_02: Although I will say now he's like a Ford ambassador for trucks and stuff, and you know, I guess the raptor.
51:59
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
52:00
SPEAKER_02: I just feel like look, I'm in no position to tell others what to do with their lives, but I just feel like I really selfishly, I just wish he was closer to F1.
52:11
SPEAKER_02: I feel like he's just left and gone.
52:14
SPEAKER_00: Hey, Daniel, if you're listening, listen up here.
52:17
SPEAKER_02: Well, really, I mean, I just like he's such a lovable character, he's such a good energy for the sport.
52:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I feel like his talents sadly were eclipsed by contracts and cars he shouldn't have been in, and maybe he was chasing the bag a little too much.
52:32
SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
52:33
SPEAKER_02: But like, I I just think that like he was so good for the sport that like I just wish he was closer to it.
52:42
SPEAKER_02: Like, you don't see him at any races, you don't but uh look, every it's no secret this is a very political sport as well, and God only knows how he feels about that.
52:52
SPEAKER_02: I imagine there's there's an inkling of him that's like screw you guys, like I'm out.
52:57
SPEAKER_02: Like, and and obviously that is the case, I guess, to some degree.
53:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he should, you know, it seems like he's having fun though with what he's doing.
53:04
SPEAKER_02: And oh, I mean he's a millionaire.
53:06
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I agree that if I was if I was if I was people in charge of the sport, I would make more of an effort to like bring him to be there with open arms and be like, hey man, like come and be a part of this family that you're you know that you that you've have historically been a part of, all that kind of stuff.
53:22
SPEAKER_00: Uh I think it'd be great.
53:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think uh yeah, we're all big fans of uh of him.
53:27
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
53:28
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.

SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's almost like that in reverse.
54:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
54:40
SPEAKER_00: Except it's even caterer in the Red Bull ring.
