Latest / The Craig Way Show / Steve Sarkisian on what characteristics all Nick Saban disciples share
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now I wanted to get to some comments from log
- 0:07Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. Now, we didn't get a
- 0:11chance to play all of the ones from the Monday
- 0:15press conference, but there's some important things that you need
- 0:18to hear out. First of all, one about his defense
- 0:22and how they've had what we know in the industry
- 0:26to be sudden change defense. If you give up the
- 0:30ball on an offensive turnover, how the defense could clamp down.
- 0:33And that's what they did against Oklahoma last week with
- 0:36the early interception throne by Quinn e Weers on the
- 0:38third play of the game, and they held Oklahoma without
- 0:41a point as Sooners went up missing a field go.
- 0:43So sark was asked about the prowess his defense has
- 0:47displayed in not allowing scores following turnovers.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'll say, first of all, we're turning the ball over
- 0:53too much and that has to be rectified, and so
- 0:57we continuing to work on it, always looking for things
- 1:02and our team where we can improve and where we
- 1:04need to get better. Clearly, that's one of them. We
- 1:06can't We cannot keep doing that to our defense and
- 1:09putting them, putting them in those positions. But a credit
- 1:12to our defense, and I touched on it Saturday. We
- 1:15practice those scenarios. We practice that mentality of sudden change
- 1:19and what that feels like to take the field and
- 1:23a lot of teams take the field with the poor means,
- 1:26oh man, why do we have to go and they
- 1:27get the ball in the fifteen yard line going in
- 1:29or whatever it is. We take the field as it's
- 1:31an opportunity to seize momentum, and I think our players
- 1:34really respond to it and have done a fantastic job.
- 1:39I'm lucky that that's the way we do approach it,
- 1:41but I don't like it, you know, because that means,
- 1:43you know, eight turnovers is way too many through six games,
- 1:46and that that's got to improve the second half the
- 1:48season for us.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so there's that. He was also asked
- 1:53about his running back depth. You know, Jaydon Blue of
- 1:56course had the couple of fumbles and then came back
- 1:58and he's bounced back and he's had the end had
- 2:00to go through that jerk Gibson runs top between the tackles,
- 2:03but of course he is a true freshman. You have
- 2:05Trey Wisner now and Wisder of course had the fumble
- 2:08that went into the end zone that Silas Bolden fell
- 2:11on for a touchdown was a huge moment, and then
- 2:15the defense was able to get the ball right back
- 2:18on the fumble, and one play after that, Wiser went
- 2:20forty three yards for a touchdowns. So who was asked
- 2:22about Trey Weisner and the depth at the running back position.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I want to say yes, And you guys might not
- 2:27believe me, but you know, he had a heck of
- 2:30a freshman year of just developing as a running back.
- 2:34But at the same time, we found out a lot
- 2:36about his speed and his toughness because of what he
- 2:39did on special teams last year, and he had a
- 2:42tremendous spring ball and the growth that what we saw
- 2:46during spring practice and then the growth we saw in
- 2:49training camp, you know, as he continued to get more opportunities,
- 2:52and so I'm not surprised, you know. The I guess
- 2:56what I'm learning more and more about him is he
- 2:59has a real natural running ability. He kind of reminds
- 3:02me of Jonathan Brooks at times that you don't get
- 3:06wowed by the size. I don't know if you get
- 3:09wowed by the outright speed, but there's just a natural
- 3:13feel that he finds his way through holes. He's tough
- 3:17to get on the ground, he's physical when he has
- 3:19to be physical, and so I just think that he's
- 3:23got a natural running ability about him. But he also
- 3:26has speed and he has real toughness, which are kind
- 3:29of prerequisites at the position.
- 3:31Speaker 1: A couple other questions, and this is something I definitely
- 3:34wanted you to hear in cause you did not hear
- 3:35it when we brought to the news conference live on Monday,
- 3:41Sark was asked about how well he knows Kirby Spartan.
- 3:48He talked about that, and Kirby, by the way, talked
- 3:51about it in his press conference. He said that the
- 3:54same thing Sarks said. They're both good friends. They're part
- 3:56of I guess a sponsor trip every year. Afterwards, and
- 4:00then Sark had mentioned something about there's, you know, there's
- 4:04certain things both of them being Nick Saban disciples and
- 4:08former assistance and all that kind of stuff. So he's
- 4:10asked if there's a specific characteristic that both he uh
- 4:15and Kirby spart have displayed being Nick Saban disciples.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I'd say the first characteristics is everybody recruits really good players.
- 4:24You know, when you're at Alabama, with coach Saban. I
- 4:26think you come to learn and value that you get
- 4:29to coach great players, and when you've got great players,
- 4:32we all become better coaches. I'm smarter, I call better
- 4:35plays because those guys make me look better, right, And
- 4:38so I think we, you know, all of us that
- 4:40have been with Coach Saban recruit really good players, you know,
- 4:43and whether that's laying at old Miss Kirby myself, you know,
- 4:47they're allys trying to find really good players. I think Two,
- 4:51I think all of us believe in the value of
- 4:53a complete team, you know, whether that's offense, defense, and
- 4:56special teams. You know, because when you when you play
- 5:00games like this at a really high level against really
- 5:02good people, and the goal is to try to win
- 5:04that last game, it's hard to win that last game.
- 5:09It's hard to be a national champion if if you're
- 5:11not a complete team, if you're not a versatile team,
- 5:15and so you got to have depth of quality players.
- 5:17And two, you better be good in all three areas
- 5:20because it's tough to get to that game and it's
- 5:22tough to win that game if you're just a one
- 5:24dimensional team.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Okay, So there was that, and then he was also
- 5:28asked a question about things that the players have said
- 5:33about this big week and and and and the program
- 5:36overall and get ready to take on Georgia, of what
- 5:40what kinds of things does he hear from his players
- 5:43in a week like this, and coming off the winn
- 5:44of Oklahoma, there was.
- 5:46Speaker 2: A there was a few things that got said coming
- 5:48out of the game from those guys. You know, I talked,
- 5:51I did hear that from Jake, And I think that
- 5:53that that just kind of speaks volumes to the mindset
- 5:56of where our team is at right now. I heard
- 5:58John A. Baron talking about getting healthy as quickly as
- 6:02everybody could so that we can come back Monday. You know,
- 6:05how you do anything is how you do everything, as
- 6:06it kind of a mantra we live by. And so
- 6:09all those little things that our guys say, even today
- 6:12when you guys visit with them, the how easy it
- 6:17comes out of them, how easy it flows out of them,
- 6:20has been ingrained in them now for three and four years.
- 6:23Some of these guys that they don't have to think
- 6:26about it, I think they truly believe it. And then
- 6:28that to me is what permeates through our locker room.
- 6:30And so I don't think Jake Majors is the only
- 6:32guy that feels that way. I think he was able
- 6:35to say it was such ease because I think that's
- 6:38what our guys are talking about, you know, and I
- 6:40think that that's a topic of discussion rather than just
- 6:43a personal thought that he has.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 1: That was in response to a question Roger Wallace asked
- 6:47him about Jake Major sitting down there in the general
- 6:49media session, big old band aid across the bridge of
- 6:52his nose. You were there, cam, you saw it, and
- 6:54he said, what wins like this? They're like they're celebrated
- 7:01more by good teams than great teams because great teams
- 7:04want to be.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Better, he said. I think he said good teams celebrate wins.
- 7:07Great teams don't because they still want to get better.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and it's a good thing. And I will
- 7:14tell you this. You were down in the locker room,
- 7:16so you saw this. Were they happy? Of course they
- 7:19were happy, and they tried on the golden hat. Did
- 7:23you get the trial the golden hat? Did you put
- 7:25the golden hat on?
- 7:25Speaker 3: No?
- 7:26Speaker 1: I did not.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I wouldn't feel comfortable puting the golden hat on.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Oh, tons of people put the golden hat on right
- 7:31down there, my son put the Golden aut I never
- 7:33put the golden hat on, but Jason was down there
- 7:36assisting with the locker room coverage it there and then
- 7:38there was I was sitting there for all any and
- 7:40all the trial if they wanted to, and he put
- 7:41it on, so he had that. No, but you did
- 7:45take a good Instagram photo when he went out to
- 7:47midfield wearing your cowboy hat. And when I first pulled
- 7:51it up, Linda looked at it and said, is he
- 7:52wearing the golden hat? But no, no, he's just wearing his
- 7:54regular cowboy hat standing at midfield on that. My point
- 7:59was going to be that the player, yes, they celebrated it,
- 8:02and they should. A win in this rivalry is big.
- 8:05You put so much of yourself into this, the strategy,
- 8:08the hard work and the emotion, all this they did.
- 8:10They did all of that. Then they released it and
- 8:15went back to work Sunday and Monday and you know,
- 8:18and started working toward getting ready for this game. Because
- 8:21that's how this They've been told this the last couple
- 8:24of years camp, that it's an every week grind in
- 8:27the SEC, and we saw this on the schedule in
- 8:30advance Scott Howard when he was on with US mentioned that,
- 8:33you know, hey, Georgia has to play Alabama on the road,
- 8:37Texas on the road, and Ole Miss on the road.
- 8:39Everybody's got, as my dad used to say, every man
- 8:42has his own sack of rocks to tote. Texas plays
- 8:46all three of its rivalry games away from Austin the
- 8:49OU game in Dallas, at Arkansas, at Texas A and M.
- 8:53Everybody's got challenges on their schedule. And by the way,
- 8:58for those who you know were tracked the schedule earlier,
- 9:01they still have to go to Vanderbilt, which is proving
- 9:03to be certainly no picnic. With Vanderbilt having beaten Alabama Nashville,
- 9:08they have to go to Kentucky. Kentucky a very good
- 9:10team that played Georgia to within a point. They have
- 9:13to do that. And we mentioned the A and M game.
- 9:16Even Florida's been improved, they're gonna have to play them
- 9:19at home, and of course going to Arkansas, and Arkansas
- 9:21beat Tennessee at home. So everybody's got to deal with
- 9:24that sort of thing.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Sark had a really good comment postgame presser on Saturday
- 9:29when he said, after Texas beat Oklahoma forty nine to nothing.
- 9:33They celebrated it like it was a Super Bowl. What
- 9:36happened was they barely got by Iowa State the next
- 9:39week and then ended up losing the Oklahoma State and
- 9:42still and there's other factors to that, but he said
- 9:45that this season, after that game, it's Oklahoma. They just
- 9:49celebrated like it was a win and then moved on.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Now that shows you the difference in the mindset and
- 9:54the difference in the culture in this year's team versus
- 9:57two years ago.
- 9:58Speaker 1: The culture of the growth, maturity, all of that stuff,
- 10:00it rolls in and they know what they are dealing
- 10:03with now in the SEC and they've been told what
- 10:08they're going to be dealing with, you know about this
- 10:10every week grind. They've been told that for the past
- 10:12two years, so they're living it right now. All right
- 10:15up next latest power rankings and the probabilities and things
- 10:21like that for reaching the college football Playoff. We get
- 10:24to that when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 10:26under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app
