Devin Davis signing off. episode out, was a great one and CC was an awesome interview and, back today and we have another college athlete this time, at a four year school. ⁓ And, ⁓ is a guy that I have gotten to know pretty well. And so, ⁓ it's going to be an interview that, I think y'all enjoy. So without further ado from Laramie, Wyoming, we have David Sains. David is ⁓ a, ⁓ will be graduating. just talked about that before, kind of off, off camera here, and he'll be graduating here in about a month or so. And he is a wrestler or I should say was a wrestler for the university of Wyoming, cowboy wrestling team, for the last couple of years. So, ⁓ David, we're sure glad thanks for joining us today and, for taking time to be on our podcast. So welcome in and, I'm just going to. David Saenz: Yeah Devin Davis: Have you start giving our listeners a little bit of a background on who you are and where you're from and how you ended up in Laramie. So give us all that information. David Saenz: Yeah, thanks for the awesome intro, Devin. So yeah, like Devin said, like you said, Devin, my name is David Sines. I am ⁓ from Eastville, California. So that's in the Southern part of California. I grew up there ⁓ my whole Yeah, ⁓ you know, so played baseball my whole life out there. That's usually the sports that. You know, they play out in California, baseball, basketball, and football. So you don't see wrestling, even though wrestling in California is like, you know, wrestling out there, it's a huge wrestling state, like in terms of like one class sport. I played baseball my whole life, got to high school and make the baseball team. So I was like, okay, well, I'm just not going to play sports anymore, I guess. ⁓ Yeah, the kind of mentality that my parents had is, no, you're going to do something. they told me everybody makes the wrestling team. So I was like, OK, well, I guess I have 100 % chance of making the wrestling team. So I go and try out. It wasn't really a try out. It was just to see, like, OK, if you could do basic moves like double leg, duck walk, and stuff like that. So I tried out, made the team. wrestled all four years in high school. started on varsity my freshman year in middle of the season and then kind of the guy who was above. So yeah, I was 113. He ended up dropping, kind of got booted out just because, you know, freshman, he was upperclassman. So then my sophomore, junior and senior season, I started ⁓ the year on varsity. wasn't really, wasn't really super good. cause my high school wasn't, you know, a powerhouse wrestling school. you know, you hear these other schools in California, St. John Bosco, Buchanan, ⁓ It was, you know, ⁓ mid tier, high school for, ⁓ wrestling. my senior year was the COVID year, unfortunately. ⁓ So. That was in 2021. So we didn't get a official ⁓ CIF wrestling season. We did a couple of duels here and there but nothing through the California Interstylastic Federation for Wrestling. So finished high school out ⁓ and be honest Devon, I ⁓ was be done wrestling. I know ⁓ we talking about school before this. I had no plans. on going to college after high school. I've really been ⁓ at school. I've always kind of struggled with school and homework tests and all that jazz. So I was like, you know, my dad's a project manager for a marker refrigeration company. So ⁓ he's a blue collared work guy. So I was like, okay, that's what I'm going to do. ⁓ I'm going go into blue collared field and just start working. But Within thinking about it more, my high school coaches kind of told me like, you should continue to wrestle. And I was like, okay. So there's a junior college about 30 minutes from where I live, more going up towards LA called Mount San Antonio College. And they have a wrestling team, pretty good. So I ended up going to Mount Sac where I would continue to wrestle for two years. I met my coach Chris McAtee who was a two-time division, just coming off of being a two-time division one All-American for Old Dominion University for wrestling. So I met him and gravitated towards him right away. He's like my older brother now. He's helped me out tremendously. Being around him and wrestling with him every day for two years, I mean, he would just beat the crap out of me and get me better. And that's sometimes what it takes to better your skill. Sometimes it takes getting the whooping every day. So ended up getting really good. Was a two time, triple C, two A, state finalist for the college. And my second year at Mt. SAC, started getting recruited by different schools out here the Midwest and West within the Big 12. ⁓ And came a visit out here to Wyoming. And I knew away, this is the place where I wanted to be. Prayed about it before came on my visit. ⁓ And I was just by the peace of the Lord. and being out here in Wyoming and Laramie and knowing that this is where he wants me to be. So forward three years later, now I'm here talking to you on a podcast. So it's crazy. Time flies, like you said. Devin Davis: Yeah, that's for sure. And I, you know, I think the interesting thing about your history, and I think a lot of folks, especially, know, that probably are listening to this, ⁓ that don't know ⁓ all that well. And just kind of thinking about your history is that, in, like you said, you have the CIF, but wrestling in California high school wrestling is all one class. Right. And, and so tell you, think a lot of people, ⁓ you still, Don't know how that process goes. so give, give us the background for the CIF and like what it takes to get, to be your state champion, you know, ⁓ California. Cause I think that's, know, here in Wyoming, we have three classes and, ⁓ ⁓ of, we have big schools and small schools, but man, everybody wrestles at the same level in California. tell us about that. David Saenz: Yeah. Yeah, so that's a great question. So basically, to even make it to the state championships in ⁓ you have your league tournament, which usually about, and this is all postseason. So you have your league tournament first. For my league, it's called the Big Eight League. So it's the Big Eight, but there's really six schools. So you have to place top three to secure an auto bid. to CIF. So CIF ⁓ is then, like, I could equate it to like sections out in states. So then for me, our CIF is called CIF, the Southern Division. now I'm going, instead of going against six schools, now I'm going against like 20. 20, 22 schools maybe, 24 schools. there, it just depends on your weight, but usually an auto bid to then go to masters, it's top, top five. So you gotta place top five at CIF and your little division to then go to masters, which is the whole Southern section. Every school in the Southern section that has wrestling is at the, ⁓ goes if your weight obviously qualifies, you're at the Masters Championship. And this is I think is like a 38 man bracket, something like that. And from there, now for Masters, you have to place top top 10 in your bracket to then go to the state championships to qualify for the state championships. And then once you're there, that's a 40 man bracket and winner takes all. So yeah, it's a little bit of yeah. Devin Davis: Man. David Saenz: Making the state championships in high school for California, it's big deal. Devin Davis: Yeah, that's been, and then at that huge of a bracket at, at state. how long of process when your regular season is over, how long does it take once your regular season is over to, you qualify for state and your wrestling state, how long a period of time is that after your regular season? David Saenz: ⁓ I think it's about a month. It's about a month. Devin Davis: Man. And, like you said, you know, that's all I've always kind of been curious, right? Because we know about how good wrestling is in Pennsylvania and Ohio in those areas. But, and mentioned that your school wasn't really one of the biggest wrestling ones, but how big is wrestling in the state of California ⁓ overall? David Saenz: Mm. I think you've seen a major jump in just support of the sport within the last couple years. When I was in high school, which all my guys on the team make me feel old. So when I was in high school, that was from 2017 to 2021. I'll be honest, it wasn't really, it wasn't that big. I feel it wasn't that big. And again, I wasn't super into the sport. In high school, I just wrestled. Like I wasn't how I am now. Like I'm watching the NCAA championships. I'll watch the California state championships. I'll watch like the Doc B and stuff. I wasn't super into the sport. To me, I feel that it wasn't that big. But I mean, now it's, you you see a lot more schools adding girls programs. You know, social media has helped tremendously within the sport across all I'm getting it out there. But again, going towards California and its growth over the last years, I think it's grown tremendously. you see a lot more, I mean, this year at the NCAA championships, division one, California had the most all Americans. So I think that just speaks volume for the state and what we're doing back at home. I think the... the sport has grown over the last four five years. Devin Davis: Well, that's, you know, and that's interesting because like a lot of the, wrestlers that I know, like, know, eat, sleep, drink wrestling. ⁓ and like that they know that's like what they want to do. Right. From the time they're five years old and all in. So, ⁓ and, say like, that wasn't that big a deal for you. When did it kind of become a bigger deal? Was there, there was something that happened or just kind of what was that experience like? David Saenz: Yeah. Yeah. So, this is an awesome question. So I remember it, man, like it was yesterday. So, after my freshman year, I remember my dad who never, you know, never wrestled. He never wrestled a day in his life. Like never put on a singlet, never strapped up a headgear, never laced up some wrestling shoes. He... came up to me, I forgot, it was in between that transition period of like summertime between your freshman and sophomore year of high school. he came up to me and he was like, do you want to be mediocre at the sport? And I was like, well, first you're gonna have to explain what mediocre means. Like, I don't know what that means. do I want to be average? And I was like, no, I want to. I want to be the best. And he said, okay, well, I want you to be great. I want you to be great. ⁓ said, okay. ⁓ said, I'll do what it takes to get you to be the best at the sport. But he's like, you got to give up everything. And I was like, In my now me and my brother joke around. joke around about it all the time. Like we should have just said, no, we're good. But I was like, you know what dad, like I want to be the best. He's like, okay, you're going to have to sacrifice everything, but I'll do what it takes. I'll do anything to get you to where you need to be. I said, all right. So that was in between my freshman and sophomore years. So then my sophomore, junior and senior year, I was uh more than average committed to the sport but I know I said that you know it was still something that I did I didn't really you know um take it super super seriously now when I got into junior college and I met my coach Chris McAtee that's when I realized because I told him I said coach I said I want to get to the division one level and he said well it's going to take a lot a lot, a lot, a lot of hard work and dedication and within the sport sacrifice. And I said, let's do it. I kid you not, Devin. mean, for those two years, ⁓ probably saw my friends maybe a handful of times. ⁓ was that man's shadow, my ⁓ Like I was with them and just like you said, eat, breathe and sleep. That's all I did for two years. I didn't do anything else, even in high school. Even in high school. I never went to any school dances. I was either wrestling at a tournament or I was practicing. I remember leaving high school practice and seeing football games and all my friends outside the football stadium. And I remember just driving off one time and telling my dad, like, man, like. I was sad, was like, man, I wish I could be out there hanging out with my friends and he's like, it's all gonna be worth it in the end. a 15 year old kid who all he wants to do is hang out with his friends and you don't really understand that in the moment. looking back at it now, it's like, man, I wouldn't go back and change anything. I would do it all over again if I could. Yeah, but I started wrestling very, very seriously. Like it was, it was my everything. It was, I thought about it 24 seven, talked about it 24 seven, did it 24 seven when I got into junior college. Devin Davis: And so, you know, it's interesting those thoughts that are going through your mind, right? It's like looking at what everybody else is doing and thinking like, is this worth it? and, then choosing like to go all in and ⁓ continue, plugging forward and it to be the best that you can be. and the, mean, the best part about that is now you look at that and it with no regrets, ⁓ right. And like, man, that was, that was worth it, but now let's fast forward. David Saenz: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Devin Davis: Um, to 2026. and, and now you're a wrestler at a division one school that wrestlers wrestles in the big 12. Um, you kind of get your shot, right. Um, and tell us about your, your senior season and, and kind of now, now that you're, we're like, Oh, probably a little more than a month out from the big 12 and, and just how things ended and, kind of looking back at on your career. David Saenz: Yeah. Yeah. Devin Davis: how you would evaluate or assess that. David Saenz: Yeah, yeah, so man, my this is my fifth year, so call it the super senior year. This ⁓ wrestling season was probably the most. emotional roller coaster I've ever been on within a wrestling season. So I start the year off, really did some self evaluating with the before this upcoming season ⁓ and put things aside that weren't, know, where I hindering my submission to Lord fully and completely. So, and not anything bad, just things going on, just internally and some external things as well. So fully submitted to Lord, my Lord and Savior, Christ, and just started training. Just my head down and train, just like I've always done, like how I told you in high school and junior college. That's all I know how to do. I, you know, was never the best. I just knew how to work hard. And that was, that came from my mom and my dad. Any, they just told me anything that I do, do your best at it and work hard. Be the hardest worker. You might not be the best, but be the hardest worker. And that's just always the mindset that I've had. So I start the season at 133 pounds. I win my wrestle off against the other. 133 you might know him, Cody Phelps, my good friend. So, but we have this true freshman who's another good friend of mine, Luke Willischel, little brother to Gabe Willischel. ⁓ And at moment talking about dropping to 125. ⁓ So I'm okay, he's dropping. Luke's phenomenal, by the way. I mean, he NCAA qualifier this year as a true freshman. So he's, he's really, really good. So Luke, the weight cut just kind of gets, it's too much for him, which I don't blame him. And he ends up staying at 133. So he goes up to 133. During our wrestle off, he's making his descent plan to 25. And I weighed in at 33. So we ended up just wrestling, just giving him a simulation match. Just throw on a singlet, throw shoes, throw a headgear on, me and him wrestle with the ref in the middle. I end up losing that match off riding time. So, but technically I'm the guy at 33, technically, because as of that moment, he's still dropping to 25s. So we go to national duels and this was our first year going we wrestled Ohio State ⁓ Virginia So two top five programs. And man, was a moment for me. I mean, I got teched in the first two periods, both my matches. And it was kind of like, what the heck? You you walk off the mat and you're like, what the heck just happened? Like, you know, one of the guys ended up being an NCAA finalist. So that makes me feel a little bit better. But the, you know, the other guy, he ended up getting hurt, but he was still really good. I think he was ranked like top 11 at that time. you get teched and you kind of walk off the mat, like what the heck just happened? And coaches ⁓ you rightfully so, kind of like, dude, like, you know, you didn't seize your moment. Like you didn't go out there and take full advantage of, I mean, not to say that they were expecting that, you know, I don't want to say expecting me to win because I think I know that they expect me to that I could win all my matches, but go out there and fight like there was no fight for me in those matches. So. I would get back to, ⁓ you know, Laramie and we start training and it was kind of like, hey, man, like rightfully so, you know, ⁓ one team, you. you you got to fight the bare minimum. You got to fight every match. they put Luke, they put Luke in at one thirty three to go to the cow Baptist duel, which was hard for me because cow Baptist is about 15 minutes away from where I live. So I was excited to go and wrestle in front of family and friends and get to spend time with them just for the night after the duel. So I don't end up going to that. And that for me, Devon was like the first just kind of like I was up here, I got my shot, I won my wrestle off and now it's like, okay, I'm all the way back down here now. I'm heartbroken, I'm very emotional and just confused. Lord, why is this happening? Why am I not able to go out and wrestle in front of my family and my friends and do what I love in front of them and all that, all those thoughts. So I end up ⁓ going to this tournament in Nebraska, Kearney. It's like a big like D2, D3 tournament. There's over 100 schools that go to the tournament. I win my bracket. Again, I'm still at 133 pounds. Luke wins the CBU duel. So the next weekend after that ⁓ ⁓ two weekends after that, I believe, ⁓ Cliff Keene Las Vegas. Huge tournament. I'd say other than. the your conference tournament and your national tournament. That's probably the biggest term in season tournament. So ends up going to that. And I remember, you know, seeing his name written up on the board and ⁓ and really feeling sad, but just trusting in the Lord. I think of Proverbs chapter three, five and six, you know, do not lean on your own understanding, but in all your ways, acknowledge the Lord and then. I just like, okay, you know what? I remember texting my mom and dad like, hey, I'm not going to Vegas. Cause they were, we live about three and a half, four hours from Vegas. So they got a hotel room and just let them know like, hey, I'm not going to cancel their hotel room. Like, and I remember just trusting him the Lord like, okay, God, like, you know, one mindset that I had this whole entire year was I I always would tell myself that I'm not the potter. I'm just the clay. I'm not the hand. I'm just the instrument. So you look at. clay in an instrument, if it just sits there and it doesn't have anybody to mold it or play it, it's just there. It's useless. So I just kept telling myself that and Luke had a phenomenal CKLV tournament. I mean, he took out number 15 and number 12 back to back. And in that moment, Devin, I knew I was like, okay, Luke's going to be the guy. Luke is going to have the spot at 133 pounds. Like, capiche, nail on the door, it's sealed. Which was very hard for me to acknowledge and realize. I remember just, my dad called me up and I was just, I was broken. Cause I was like, the last, I thought this year was gonna be my year. ⁓ I gonna have my opportunity to. You know, be on the starting lineup, which is all I've ever wanted. And just to, you know, get my shot to go out and compete and you know me, and I've told you this before, bigger than going out and competing Devin, I just wanted to proclaim the Lord's name as my Lord and savior on the biggest stage. And remember calling, my dad calling me up and I was angry, you know, we kind of got into it just a little bit. you know, he was, cause I was, you know, he's trying to comfort me, which, you know, a father is going to do, but I'm like, dad, I don't want to hear this right now. Like I'm mad, like let me be mad. you know, we kind of get in a little argument just cause I'm, you know, I'm, I'm fuming. Cause I'm like, that should be me. But after that we have a Reno tournament of champions, which is towards the end of, ⁓ I think it was like three days before Christmas this year, excuse me, this year. The big man, coach Branch ⁓ comes up to me, the boss, and you know, I think about a week before Reno comes and he goes, Hey, what do you think about bumping up to 41s? And I was like, oh, okay. Like, I like the sound of that. I was like, and I remember telling him, it was like, I told him, Branch, if you need me to wrestle 57, and I'm nowhere near 57, I'll wrestle. Like, I just want to wrestle, coach. Like, I don't care. And he goes, okay, well, you'll go 41 for Reno. And then based off that, you'll go 41 for Soldier's Salute in Iowa, which was... January 3rd and 4th. So it was about a week and a half after Reno. So I ended up going to a Reno Tournament of Champions, make it all the way to the finals, and I lose to my teammate, John Alden. that for me was, ⁓ and was again, broken. It's like, what the heck? I bump up, I have a great tournament. I have a big pin in the semis against a pretty good kid. And I lose to my teammate, you know. ⁓ I think it was like nine to four. like, what the heck? remember. And within all this, the awesome thing was like, I was constantly growing spiritually and this was a big spiritual growth moment for me. I remember as we were walking off the mat, they us our medal and as soon I grabbed it, Devon, I threw it in the trash. I like, I don't want this. And I remember after the tournament, my mom was, you my mom loves taking pictures. ⁓ She's taking pictures of me and my whole family came out to watch me and she's like, where's your metal? And I'm like, oh, I guess this is where I have to tell her. was like, I actually threw it away. And she goes, you better go dig in that trash can and go get that metal. So about 30 seconds later, I'm digging in this nasty trash can that probably had throw up and everything else in it. And I'm trying to finally get my metal. that for me was like, okay, you know what? Like, I can't be doing that kind of stuff. I have to. be appreciative and show gratitude to the Lord in my wins and in my losses. take second at Reno Tournament of Champions, go Soldier's Salute about a week and a half later. I do all right there. I think went like three and two, four and two, like that. Lost in the Bloods. As of right now, again, Luke has the spot secured at 33. Like that's his spot, rightfully so. So I'm kind of battling with the spot now with John Alden. So he goes and he wrestles. They weigh us in both for the South Dakota State Duel. And they told me like, hey, be ready. You're most likely gonna go out there. So I'm ready to go. I'm amped. My parents come out, they drive out. It's about a 13 and a half, 14. our drive so they drive out. You know, could I tell them, Branch said I'm most likely gonna wrestle. So I remember, you know, we're sitting behind that curtain and they come and tell John that he's gonna wrestle. So I was like, okay, you know what? I'm trusting in the Lord. Like all I could do at this point, Devin, is trust in the Lord. I can't, I'm not gonna try and understand. I'm not gonna try and figure it out because when I do that, it drives me crazy because I can't and I get mad. So I'm like, okay, you know what? I'm gonna trust in the Lord. I go back in the wrestling room, I do like, I do a cool down even though I didn't even wrestle and I was a little emotional. I'm not going to lie. And I remember again, just telling my dad, Hey, ⁓ the clay, not the Potter. I'm the instrument, not the hand. God's going to use me when he wants to use me and whichever way he decides to use me, he's going to do that. So John ends up losing that duel. And then after that is the West Virginia duel in West Virginia. And my coaches tell me, you're going. We're taking you on this trip and you're going to wrestle. We're not taking John, you're going to wrestle. So I'm like, oh sweet, like this is my shot. Like this is my time. So we go to West Virginia. I end up losing the match, think nine to five, something like that, against a pretty good kid. But like I told you in the beginning, I fought. I fought the entire time. I made a scrap. ⁓ towards the end of the match, that match I started, you know, to put the pace on them and, know, you get, think I, I believe, and I know my coaches would back me with this. You gave me another minute. I probably would have beat that kid. but we get back and after that, I started the rest of the season. You know, I didn't look back. I, the spot was mine. I, you know, I finally earned it and every dual drop some close matches against some good guys. Also beat some good guys and had some. good wins in there. Go to the Big 12 Championship for the first time and you know, man, the Big 12 Championship was probably the best wrestling experience I've ever had. You know, just the atmosphere, the environment, what's at It was awesome. fell short of making it to Nationals. ⁓ You know, my season at the Big 12 Championships, which, you know, it was hard for me because, you know, that goal was... before going in was, hey, to qualify for the national tournament and a national champ. That was my goal. Whether seemed impossible to the world and the rest of the wrestling community, it was possible for me because I know who I had on my side and that was Jesus. And ⁓ yeah, so that's how the season went. And again, it just an emotional roller coaster, but bigger than anything and most importantly, than how I did just my ⁓ growing ⁓ as man God. and my spiritual journey, man, I've grown so much and now done, but I'm gonna continue to carry my faith wherever I go. And that's something that we've talked about before, being in my faith and telling people about the good news of ⁓ Jesus Devin Davis: And, and I think, you know, going back to when I met you and how we got connected and we'll talk about that a little bit more in a minute, but was that FCA sports camp in Laramie a couple of years ago, um, as you were a huddle leader and I was the chaplain for, wrestling. And, um, and, and this is a little sales plug for FCA sports camp for any high school, middle school kids out there. It's an awesome time. have guys, you know, division one wrestlers who are huddle leaders. David Saenz: Yeah. Devin Davis: Um, and I know that you've had a huge impact on some of the guys that I know that are in high school. So, it's to me, it's, know, we always, uh, coach Brightman gives us time to share our testimonies and it's great to hear our huddle leaders testimonies and hearing your story about your faith. Um, but I'll tell you, you know, this is my perspective. Um, I, I am amazed. From the first time I met David signs, to ⁓ to David signs right now, how much you've grown in your face. ⁓ ⁓ I, I, you know, I think that is something not, not giving you a big head, right? Because, ⁓ but I think that that's, I'm just kidding. That's, that's, that's far more important in the scheme of life. ⁓ then David Saenz: Yes. Yeah, no, Yeah. Yeah. Devin Davis: You know, being an all American or whatever that might be. So I, I just really, I mean, it brings me a lot of joy to see the, man, the Christ follower you are today, not that you weren't two years ago, but just how you've matured in your faith ⁓ put your trust, put your faith in him and your impact, I think is, ⁓ is, you know, just crazy. And, and I think greater than you, ⁓ realized, but I, I want to kind of look at that as well as like, what were kind of those keys? Like you said, the hard season that you, you had, you know, you have, you have and, obviously those were the choices, but what other influences have you had in the last couple of years that have turned you in to the, to the faithful, Christian, that we've heard that testimony from this last What's happened in your life? David Saenz: Yeah, so again, like I said before season, I hadn't fully submitted to the Lord fully and completely. And I'll get a little ⁓ open and vulnerable. was in a, ⁓ again, God-centered relationship with an amazing girl. I was in a God-centered relationship with an amazing girl that was not in the Lord's timing for me to in a relationship. And again, I say God-centered because it wasn't like we were having a worldly relationship and doing worldly things. We were reading the Bible together. We were praying together. We were going to church together. We were talking about Jesus together. But again, it wasn't in the Lord's timing for me to be in a relationship. So within that, again, amazing girl, I put. you know that to the side and said, hey, you know what, I need to be obedient to the Lord fully and completely and submit to him. I've always had, again, we talked about Aaron Frude before this. Aaron Frude is one of my ⁓ He's one of my counselors. So I have about ⁓ four counselors out here in Wyoming, where when I was back home, I didn't really have counselors. And ⁓ these that I'm about to name will forever be my biblical counselors who I'll call. You know weekly if I'm if I'm able to and that is Aaron fruit, which I'm sure a lot of people know him Brady Brooks who you might remember him. He was He was helping out at the wrestling ⁓ portion of the FCA camp Creighton Tremblay ⁓ guy and JJ Byers over at ⁓ Laramie Valley Chapel Here Laramie, so I would with those guys in person if I could more so JJ and Aaron because they're in Laramie. Brady is in Wyoming and so is Creighton but I know exactly where but I forgot actually but ⁓ don't get mad at me guys. But yeah so they're you know ⁓ I just just I call them I would call them as frequently as I could again in the midst of wrestling season in school it was it was a lot like I was super busy I kid you not Devon this was my day this was my life every day for the last six months. I'd wake up, I'd go to class, I'd have lift. Sometimes, depending on the day, go back to class, come home really fast, get a quick bite to eat, go to wrestling practice, come home, spend time with the Lord, go back to the school workout again, come home, go to bed. Like that was my day every day. in between all that, when I was able to find time to spend time, you know, call these guys and you know, just let them counsel me in, you know, in, you know, my walk with the Lord and, and just the biblical counsel that I would, I would heed, I would do that. So having those counselors in my life were, were really big for my, my growth in the Lord. But above I think just growing my intimacy with the Lord. I think growing my intimacy with the Lord and I wake up. I thank the Lord for the day. I would open up my Bible, I sit down with them and I actually got this from Creighton was spending quiet time with Jesus. Like just, you sitting down in my room and not, know, my door, just peace and quiet and just waiting for the Lord to speak to me. I'd sit with a journal in front of me and a ⁓ pen or pencil in front of me. and I would just wait for the Lord to speak to me. I told Creighton about this, it was like, as believers, and not that there's anything wrong with it, but we're so quick to tell God, God help me with this, allow to do this, allow me to go here, do that, like almost present to him a wish list type of deal. Like, hey Lord, like, this is what I need in my life that I need you to provide for me, please. Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with that, but. As followers and believers of Jesus, how many times do we just sit at His feet and just wait for Him to speak to us? Devin Davis: Amen. And cutting you off here, but, I, I, I struggle with that. Cause I think that is something that's really important. And, it, know, when it's quiet and it's dark, I get up pretty early in the morning. Like my mind just goes a thousand different places. ⁓ and I'm thinking like, how, what could, what do I have to do today? You know, I got to text this person. had to call this person. I got to send an email and, but. David Saenz: You Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ yeah. Devin Davis: You know, that hard for you to ⁓ able to do that and feel like there was some worth or some value in that? David Saenz: Yeah, first, and like you said, I feel especially as a man, you're thinking about a thousand different things at once. you know, I saw this video once where it was like, people don't really understand when I say people, mean, know, the females and like all the thoughts that run through a dude's head all at once, you know. And again, like you said, it's like, When I woke up, I was already thinking about what I needed to take care of by the weekend, days out. And it's like, at first, yeah, and this is what Creighton told me, like, it was gonna be hard because it was like, you're sitting there and you're ⁓ that just quiet time with the Lord, just eyes closed, just sitting there in quiet, your mind's gonna wanna race to, I have to do this later, I have to do that tomorrow, I have to get this homework assignment done, and I have to. make wait this and like by this day and how am I going to do like it's like your mind would start to race to all these different places but just sitting there and being in communion and my intimate time with the Lord it was like okay God clear my mind of any thoughts any outside thoughts that are not regarding or specific to you right now put it to the side it doesn't matter it doesn't matter he did that And so the first couple of times it was a little hard, but I got to a point where I was like, I just emptied my mind. I emptied myself for the Lord and was like, okay, God. And that's when I feel that I heard his voice more, you know, more clear, like just what he wanted in my life and he wanted me to do it for the glory, and praise, not of myself, but of him. So yeah. Devin Davis: And. That, and I think, you know, it's, amazing because everybody is so busy nowadays. Right? Like they say that I'm so busy and, and obviously for some of us, that's true. Right. just hearing your schedule, what was the hardest thing to do in, that busyness of that schedule? And, and you said you tried to make time for God, on a daily thing and, and what's. David Saenz: Yeah. Devin Davis: You know, what's the hardest thing for you to do in the busy-ness as a college athlete to really grow your faith kind of to that next level? Where did you kind of have challenges? David Saenz: I think just sitting down and opening my word. I think sitting down and opening my word and. you know, giving time to the Lord. Because this is the way I grew up and my dad would always preach this. would tell me, if you spend an hour wrestling, you better spend an hour and one minute in your word. And sometimes hard to do because again, the busyness of life, it's like, okay, like I can't just tell branch like, hey, I'm not going to show up to practice today because I got to, you know. Devin Davis: Hey. David Saenz: open up my Bible and spend time with the Lord. Like I can't do that and the Lord knows that. But, you know, it's like, I think just. I got good at it towards the, you know, the the middle of season and towards the end, but like just opening up my word and spending time with them. I would I would take my Bible to school. So like when I would get done with class and I had that time in between practice or classes and. ⁓ practice, I would just go in our team room and I would just open up my Bible and just read. I read a couple of chapters before practice. would, you know, I always take my Bibles. I always take my Bible, excuse me, on on wrestling trips. If we traveled, I mean, that's even when I travel for non wrestling purposes, like that's my sword. You know, that that's my that's my defense. I take that wherever I go. That's my most prized possession. If someone were to come to me and ask me, hey, what's what object is most important to you? Devin Davis: Amen. David Saenz: without hesitation I'll go it's my Bible. I take that thing everywhere. yeah I think just spending you know finding time to read the Word and just you know learning no more about Jesus that. So ⁓ feel like that was kind of the the biggest battle that I had was you know finding time to open up my Word and ⁓ spend intimate time with them. Devin Davis: Amen. And yeah, I think that's, hard because, we, make excuses. I mean, right. That's just human beings and Satan wants to work against you. and, and your flesh, I mean, that's work. and we have be committed to that and discipline to be able to do that. But the funny thing about that is we have so much trouble doing that. You know, a lot of the high school kids that I work, we have so much trouble doing that. When that probably is the thing, like you just said, that is the most beneficial to us. you know, and, and I think that's, ⁓ that's just human being. That's just, that's just me, but think that's just a hard thing for us to do. So ⁓ really, I love that encouragement and that advice. ⁓ know, the, the other thing that I, I would like to talk about, as I mentioned earlier, we talked about sports camp ⁓ hopefully you told me you're coming. David Saenz: Yeah. ⁓ yes. Yeah. Yeah. Devin Davis: back to be a hubble eater this year. David Saenz: Yeah, Lord willing if you know, again, when I get back, you know, it's, I guess it's time to be an adult now, as my parents say. So not too stoked about that. But I know I got a couple of things I got to do within those first couple of weeks. I'm a right now I'm a Wyoming resident. So I got to switch all my stuff back over to California, unfortunately. Devin Davis: No, you don't have to do that. You could stay a Wyoming resident. David Saenz: Yeah, you're right. could, I could stay. could stay. But, you know, I gotta, you know, do some things. I got a couple interviews I gotta do with coaching staff, staffs, and because they want me to, they want to bring me on, on their staff. I think, again, Wyoming, the FCA camp for Wyoming is always, I mean, last year, I think it was the 27th to the 29th, something like that. So Lord willing, you know, I want to be back. and you know huddle. ⁓ Devin Davis: All right. Cause I, I, that's why I texted you guys. had a couple of your, your, ⁓ huddle members, ⁓ who reached out to me. was like, man, you got, you got to go to FCA camp again. Is David going to be there? ⁓ well, let me, let me find out. then, so, so, we have a couple of that have requested David as their huddle leader, but, ⁓ just, just, ⁓ and one of them is one of my leaders, Levi, Gail from Riverton. That was the first thing he texted me is. David Saenz: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ yeah, that's my guy. Devin Davis: Yeah. And he's, he was excited. That's why he, he signed up and it's coming back. But, I want you to just let people know, obviously that haven't experienced it from, from, ⁓ from a huddle leader perspective, because just to let people know, they don't know about FCA. We have our, we have our sports session. So huddle leaders, ⁓ we try to get, ⁓ you know, college kids, who, seniors who have graduated, have experience in wrestling to be able to help with the technique and drills and things like that, wrestle with the kids. mean, I think that's a highlight ⁓ the year. but also we break out into smaller groups ⁓ and a huddle eater, have the responsibility of, know, some probably pretty hard discussions and questions. So you have a lot of impact or influence on the kids who are attending FCA sports camp, but from a huddle eater perspective and just overall, what do you think, you know, Sell us FCA sports camp, Laramie, kind of particularly tell us what you kind of learned in the highlights and, how would talk somebody into going to FCA sports camp. David Saenz: Yeah, and I'll talk, mean, to whoever watches this and I tell this to everybody. Your identity should not lie within your sport. It should lie within the cross, your relationship with Jesus Christ, with Jesus. So when I'm telling whomever I'm talking to, the viewer or, you know, just a kid who's hesitant on going to the camp, go, felt, and this is what I feel kind of gets them, but it's true. that when I took my identity, when I broke that those chains free from David signs as a wrestler to David signs as a child of God, I felt that I advanced in my skill within wrestling extremely fast and my coaches saw it, my teammates saw it, my family saw it, everybody's like, I started to get really good at my sport. So when I saw and when and going to FCA camp, That's what we're preaching. That your identity doesn't lie within your sport because so many kids feel, again, across all sports, if I win, that's who I am. I'm a winner. But if I lose, that's who I am. I'm a loser. And no, that's not true. Whether you win or lose, most importantly above all, your Lord and Savior doesn't love you anymore or less. When I go up, when I stand before the Lord one day, He's not gonna ask me, hey, before I let you into heaven, how many All-American trophies did you give me? How many national championships did you give me? No. He's going to go, what did you do to, you know, I'm standing in front of him, like, what did you do to tell people about me? And then, you know, Lord willing, everybody, you know, this is what I'm, you know, my goal to ⁓ is well done, good and faithful servant, you know, ⁓ that's what I want to hear. I to hear well done, good and faithful servant. ⁓ don't to hear well done, ⁓ you a national champ because things of this world are, Devin Davis: Amen. Yeah. David Saenz: this is just how I felt. really felt this when I read the book of, I believe, Ecclesiastes, when I talked about vanity. If you think about it, Devon, everything in this world is vain. It's all gonna away one day. You don't take all your fancy cars, I bet that you got. Nah, I'm just like, ⁓ but you take, ⁓ yeah, you take your house, ⁓ your cars, ⁓ don't take of that with you, nor do I. Devin Davis: Yeah David Saenz: I don't take, you know, my every trophy that I've got. So I just tell kids, hey, we strengthen you in your sport, we better your skills, but more than anything, we strengthen your relationship with ⁓ Lord. And what's most important. Like we talked about a couple of minutes ago, know, wrestling's done for me on a competitive level, but the spiritual battle that I on go every day. That's going to happen till the Lord calls me home. So I got to prepare and equip. I got to prepare and equip myself every day through counselors, through talking to, you know, older, wise biblical men like yourself and helping me grow in my faith so I could come combat the enemy when they're trying to condemn me, when they're trying to get me to do things that I don't want. And especially in today's, you know, era, that's, ⁓ you within social and all this other stuff. Devin Davis: Yeah. David Saenz: man, the enemy is getting a lot of the youth, especially I feel within sports, making them think that, you know, hey, I have to make this my identity. This is more important than my relationship with the Lord. And I think FCA camp within Laramie is an awesome experience. Even as a huddle leader, I grow ⁓ on my with the Lord for three days. You know, I'm pouring in to my group young boys, but ⁓ we go back night. And I truly do feel that, you know, that is the best energizer, the best caffeine that you could have to keep you up as the Holy Spirit. Because man, it's from sunup to sundown thing. I mean, we're waking up, we're waking up at, you know how it is, we're waking up at 6 a.m. doing our quiet time with the kids. you know, our end of the night meeting every night, I mean, it's at like 11 o'clock and it goes for about two and a half, sometimes three hours. Devin Davis: Yeah. David Saenz: So we're going to bed sometimes around 1.30 and we're waking up at six. It's like, you you're dead tired, but when you wake up, you you just pray and the Holy Spirit's like, okay, it you little taze and you're like, okay, I'm up, I'm up. Let's go, let's go, let's go. So yeah, the FCA camp's amazing. I love it. Devin Davis: Yeah. And I think that a good observation as far as Ezekiel, right? Vanity. But it also says that like, know, eating and drinking are all from God. I mean, all those good gifts and all those things that we can enjoy in this life are a blessing from God. The life may pass away and... And all those things in it. they really don't matter. Our faith does and who we follow and who we surrender. But I think connected to that is those things, those good things that he's given us, like one of those things of sports. ⁓ and, and he's given that to us to enjoy. And I think we're made that way. had gifts that, that made you, able to wrestle at the level that you did, but we can't make it an idol. David Saenz: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, no. Devin Davis: Right. We can, that's, that's our calling is to love the sport, love the competition, love to glorify God through them, as long as we keep it from being an idol. And that's, I think that's another thing that we really try to stress through fellowship of Christian athletes is, sports aren't an idol to us. Sports are a way for us to worship and honor and glorify God. And the better job we do at that, then. David Saenz: Mm-hmm. Devin Davis: It draws us closer to him. And that sounds like that's really what's happened in the last couple of years, especially this last year in your, your wrestling career. you, you know what I'm, you know what I'm saying? I guess the point I'm trying to get across there. David Saenz: ⁓ yeah, 100%. 100%. I mean, again, there were, I talked about the me throwing away the over in Reno. In the beginning of the season, I would pray to the Lord, hey Lord, my identity away from wrestling. don't, before anybody thinks of, when think of David Sines, I don't want them to think of wrestler first. I want them to think of a servant of the Lord. That guy was a servant of the Lord. ⁓ And goes for the rest of my life. When I want people to talk about me, if I'm down here still on earth, or if I go out to be with the Lord, I would just want people to know. what my number one priority was and that was to serve the Lord with all my heart, mind and soul. ⁓ ⁓ talk about, would pray that to the Lord and I would just tell the Lord, hey, ⁓ my identity away from wrestling. But when I threw that medal away, I remember talking to my dad about it and this came through quiet time, the Lord revealing this to me that, hey, your identity still lies within wrestling a little bit because if... Devin Davis: Amen. Yeah. David Saenz: If it didn't, you wouldn't have thrown that medal away. You would have been appreciative. You would have shown gratitude. But because it to some degree, it still does tie within wrestling. You were so angry you threw that medal away when it's like that. Yeah. Growing moment. Devin Davis: That's it. That's good, that's truth. Isn't it? That's, that's a really good, your dad's a wise guy. Cause I'd never would've thought about that, but yeah, I mean, your, your natural response should have been gratitude if you were grounded. And so, yeah, that's, that's a good point. So as, ⁓ just kind of, things up a little bit, I just wanted you, you mentioned about, possibly coaching what. David Saenz: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Devin Davis: What is your, what does your future look like and in kind of what your plans are how do you see David signs post college wrestling? David Saenz: Yeah, see David signs post college wrestling and what's, you know, upcoming for me. I'm going to be coaching at a junior, my junior college that I attended, ⁓ Mount San Antonio college. So I'm to be coaching there and, one other place I'm still deciding between, two high schools that have, you know, given me some pretty sweet ⁓ offers and, ⁓ know, benefits you know, ⁓ in coaching there. So still praying on those. So if you could just be praying for me in that aspect, I would appreciate that. I'm going back to school. ⁓ I going to join a ASN program to be a nurse. So that's my plan right now. I'm to be ⁓ enrolling in a two year program, and whether at RCC or at SAC, which Devin Davis: Amen. David Saenz: Mount Sac would be sweet because I'll obviously be working there. So right now I want to ⁓ pursue a career in the registered nursing field and within that, you know, move up in the ranks and, know, just again, I was talking to, I don't know, forgot his last name, but Clayton over at LVC. I mean, and being in the hospital and ⁓ where people are, you know, of the time when you're at the hospital, it's when people are at the hospital, it's never good. ⁓ I feel that it's a great witness to share my faith to those who I am, you know, taking of, patience. So that's my and my plans right now. You know, again, with everything that I do, and again, you know, my parents always preach this to me is pray about everything, even the smallest of things that you think are common sense. They're not. Just pray about everything. So I'm praying about it every day, just that the Lord continue to add more peace onto me. And but within ministry, I definitely want to get plugged into a church. know they have a church back at home. I'm really good friends. My dad's really good friends with him. His name's Miner. He has a church called Calvary Chapel, The Barn. And I'd really like to get plugged into his church and his ministry and start going to his church and just getting plugged in over there. more than anything, I don't pray that... You know, I have a lot of money one day, I tell the Lord all the time. All I need Lord is a roof over my head, food on my plate and a nice bed to sleep in at night. when I, know, one day Lord willing have a and a family that I could provide the same for them. you know, what's most important to me is just, you know, how I'm serving the Lord, just being plugged in. And now that competitive wrestling is over and, you know, being out on that mat and being a witness to everybody that watches me now. whether I want to do it through my career and I want to get plugged into a church. So those are my goals right now. And I'm just excited to see doors the Lord opens for me and where he leads me. Devin Davis: And I, I think that, have several coaches, ministries, Bible studies here because coaching is such a ministry in itself and, and a calling itself just because you have such an influence over your, over your athletes. ⁓ And, so it's awesome to, to see you give back to wrestling through coaching, but, just also, ⁓ having that mindset is I, like, I want to, I want to impact kids, ⁓ to show them the, that there is. David Saenz: Bye. Yeah. Devin Davis: There are other options because you said that and I think you're exactly right, man. It, it, I don't know. ⁓ I was blessed to grow up when I did, but there are so many distractions, ⁓ in this life and so many temptations in this life. And unfortunately, a lot of them aren't all that great. And, to, be able to share, and show kids a different path. I think that's what we need. We need coaches. David Saenz: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Devin Davis: who have a heart for the gospel and for a heart for Jesus. So I think he'd be a really good coach. David Saenz: That's what I've been told. So I love coaching. I got a couple kids ⁓ that doing privates with right now. I mean, man, it just brings me joy when I show them something that they're like, ⁓ my gosh, I didn't know you could do this. And I'm like, yeah, dude, you could do this. And ⁓ it's again, and ⁓ I think it comes with, again, I got a little brother who's in the process of transferring right now to a Division I school and he's still deciding where he's gonna go. Devin Davis: Yeah. Yeah. David Saenz: I told him, you know, big ⁓ I was like, man, like I would take a thousand losses to see you win. ⁓ it brings more joy seeing him win, my brother, you know, win and, you know, accomplish his dreams and goals than it would for me. And that goes just with other kids too. You know, I rather, you know, I got a little... One of my little guys, his name's Anthony, he's getting ready to go. You might know him, Anthony, getting ready to go into high school. He's been to the FCA camp a couple of times, like he's getting ready to go into high school. And it's like, you know, I rather see him go and win a national championship, high school state championship than, than if I would have, you know, so. Devin Davis: That's awesome. Well, this is, this has been, I think we probably talked for a whole nother hour. and between wrestling and, and, ⁓ faith and, like there's nothing that excites me more than that. Everybody who listens to 307 faithful probably has already figured out I'm a wrestling guy. And so I don't, I don't need to, I monopolize, ⁓ 307 faithful with a wrestling. David Saenz: Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Devin Davis: interviews, but, I, I love just, the hard, hard stuff that wrestlers have to go through. ⁓ and, and really when they, know, they, they have to rely on their faith, ⁓ as a, as a Christ follower. And so there's such a connection there, but it's, it's, I sure appreciate this and hopefully I will see you again. Like you said, Lord willing, ⁓ at the ⁓ of June before you leave Wyoming, but, David Saenz: Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Devin Davis: I always say, is there anything that's kind of on your heart or on your mind before we close that you wanted to share with everybody who's tuned into this episode? David Saenz: Yeah, I just, think I said this when I was up on the big stage at ⁓ this last year, given the testimony, but my would always say, keep your eyes on Jesus. So, you know, I get emotional just even thinking about it, but just keep your eyes on Jesus. It's hard to do in the craziness of life. Again, you know what, like we talked about, there's so many distractions and things that will temporarily satisfy us, but Jesus satisfies for eternity. So keeping your eyes on Jesus and fully submitting your life to him. Don't hold anything back from Jesus. He knows your heart. He knows what you need and what you don't need. Give him full control of your life and the ways that he will use you. Devin Davis: Amen. Amen. David Saenz: You can't even, I can't even put them into words. I never would have thought you'd take me back to when we talked about my dad telling me, hey, do you want to get serious about wrestling? I never thought that I would be here. I never thought that I would be in a different state wrestling, that I wrestled for a division one program. But when you submit your 100 % to the Lord, Devon E., I mean, and to everybody watching, and I tell this to everybody who I speak to, he'll use you in ways that you never imagined. So just keeping your eyes on Jesus and just. fully being in submission to the Lord. Devin Davis: Yeah. And I, and tying to that, to something that you said also is that, you know, when you took your dad's challenge and to see where you're at now, that you fully committed to wrestling, uh, went all into wrestling and that you don't have any regrets that you did that at all. You know, that's the same thing with being a follower of Jesus. You're fully surrendering and submitting to him as your Lord and savior. be an obedient to him. I have not met anybody in, and. David Saenz: Mm-mm. Amen. Devin Davis: I don't think it's possible if you fully do that, if your faith is genuine, you're, you're saved by his blood born again. You will not have a regret in your life. And you, you know, and that's, and that's, that's the challenge. love now that I'm a officially a representative with SCA. could not be more blessed by that. And, and, ⁓ the big part of that is the message that I take to the huddles that I work with at, at camp ⁓ David Saenz: Nah. Amen. Devin Davis: Like, man, I, my regret is I, I called myself a Christian. I believed in Jesus, but, I didn't ever fully give my life to him until later on, you know, probably halfway through my life. And that's my regret is that I didn't do that from, from being in college, like, like you have, and, just thinking about what your life will be like fully submitted as a Christ follower and the impact that you're going to have is. is just amazing. Like you said, the way God's going to use you, I'm really excited to keep in touch and watch how that changes and how you change people. you know, that is the one thing that nobody, if their faith is genuine and they truly are trusting and surrendering, that there'll never be anything in their life that they'll say, man, I wish I would have done that different because there is nothing greater than that. David Saenz: Yeah. Amen. Amen. Yeah. Devin Davis: And this has awesome. I, I've sure appreciated.
