- 0:04Hey guys, this is the Daily Ripples. This is Corey,
- 0:07August 1st, and this is the first of the month. And Pastor Mike
- 0:12was talking to me the other day, he was like, it's cool you get started
- 0:14out on the first of the month. And it is, because like each
- 0:18of these months we kind of go into a new thought. And this month
- 0:23we're on step 8, and we might cover some of that. And you
- 0:27know, but the information We just, what we do is we, we read over this
- 0:30stuff and kind of connect it to some things that we find
- 0:35that's important through the literature, and we just talk about it. And, um,
- 0:38I'm really grateful for this opportunity
- 0:42to do this as well, and I try to let you guys know that.
- 0:45So thank you for listening. And, um, today's August 1st,
- 0:49Faith Lived Out. The Stone: Spiritual
- 0:53truth only becomes real in my life when I choose to live it.
- 0:56Ripple 1: Practical. Today I will move beyond thinking and into action.
- 1:01I will not settle for agreeing with what is right. I will practice it.
- 1:05That may mean showing patience, asking for help, or choosing compassion when
- 1:09it is not easy. Living it means it shows up in what I
- 1:14do. Ripple 2: Spiritual. The Father
- 1:18calls me into a life not just as an idea. Jesus lived
- 1:22out every truth he taught. Showing what obedience and love
- 1:26looked like in real time. The Holy Spirit
- 1:30guides me today, and not just to understand, but to act.
- 1:34As I step into obedience, what once felt
- 1:38distant becomes real and active in my life.
- 1:42I remember hearing a talk that my sponsor did a
- 1:47while back, and it was talking about obedience to spiritual principles.
- 1:52I think I've always been obedient to some kind of principle,
- 1:56and mostly it was obedient to this principle
- 2:00of self, um, or, you know,
- 2:03principle of I need to, uh, have a job, or principle
- 2:08of I want to have friends, or,
- 2:11you know, principle of I need a woman, or, you know,
- 2:15just accept, like, you know, just there's a multitude of things that, like, you know,
- 2:18I thought those were principles that I needed to live by.
- 2:23And in the book, you know, in the big book, it kind of talks about
- 2:26that, you know, throw away theory or gadget for something new, which, you know,
- 2:30for something that doesn't work, for something new which does.
- 2:34And man, my theory and gadget on that, my life was not working,
- 2:37um, in every capacity, you know,
- 2:41not just in when I drank,
- 2:44it was in matters that just had to do with life.
- 2:49Um, and I think some people, you know, like, I just never understood how some
- 2:53people got it. You know, some people understood this life thing, and they—
- 2:57maybe they didn't, but they sure looked like it, and they did a really good
- 3:00job pretending. And there's times, like,
- 3:03you know, I would just pretend. And not pretend
- 3:07out of, like, you know, hey, you know, I know what I'm doing, but it
- 3:11was more of an ego thing because I thought I knew what I was doing,
- 3:13but I don't— didn't. At all.
- 3:16Um, in page 130 of the— in the,
- 3:19in the 12 and 12, page 130, I— there's so much
- 3:23in this paragraph. I, uh, I think
- 3:27that it, you know, there's so much to break down, but this little
- 3:32part in there, it says the AA member has to conform
- 3:36to principles of recovery. His life actually
- 3:41depends upon obedience to spiritual principles. If he
- 3:45deviates too far, the penalty is sure and swift.
- 3:49He sickens and dies. And, you know, like a
- 3:53dot in literature and in any form,
- 3:57if I was to go to the doctor and
- 4:01they were going to tell me I was going to die, that would be pretty
- 4:04important information. And it,
- 4:07like, you know, if someone told me, hey, if you do this, you're gonna die,
- 4:12and I'd look at them, you know, and people, you know, I think the electric—
- 4:14I work with wires, and you think about that. And someone
- 4:19said, hey, don't touch these 2 together, you could die. Well, I'm not going to
- 4:23touch those 2 wires together. Actually, I'm going to put tape around them,
- 4:26and then I'll go make sure the, the breaker's turned off
- 4:29before I touch them, right? Because, like, I don't want to die.
- 4:34But then I come up into this place of living and you tell me to
- 4:37act this way and I'm like, whoa, hold on a second. Like,
- 4:40it's been working so well so far for me. Like, but it hasn't.
- 4:46And so I come into that position of like, am I,
- 4:49am I willing? You know, and I was writing something this morning about this.
- 4:53I do a meditation on some thoughts and,
- 4:57you know, it says in How It Works in the big
- 5:00book of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says, you know, if you're willing to go to any
- 5:03length, for victory over alcohol? Are you
- 5:06willing to go to any lengths, right? Well, are you? If you're not,
- 5:10that's okay too. Um, but today
- 5:16I'm willing. Today I'm willing to love people.
- 5:19Today I'm willing to be of service. And I, uh,
- 5:23I've been coming around these rooms for quite a long time in my life,
- 5:26and I've— it's an interesting concept what some
- 5:31of these rooms look like, right? So You'll have people in these rooms
- 5:35of all sorts of lengths of sobriety,
- 5:39and the chairperson presents a topic out of the literature,
- 5:43and then these people talk about it. Well,
- 5:48but the one thing that's consistent in all these meetings is they
- 5:52open with a prayer. And I think about that today,
- 5:55and I think about what that means is like, you know, we've opened with
- 5:59a prayer. I do that in the morning right when I open my day up.
- 6:01I get on my knees and then a certain topic is presented.
- 6:05Well, for that next hour, most of those people,
- 6:09besides the people playing on their phones and,
- 6:12um, not paying attention, you know, they're, they're thinking
- 6:16about this topic for an hour. And so they're meditating on a topic.
- 6:21And so somebody says,
- 6:24you know, theorizes this topic of how it can connect in
- 6:28their life and so on. And So in the Big
- 6:31Book of Alcoholics Anonymous,
- 6:35on page 83, it says the spiritual life is not a theory.
- 6:39We have to live it. And maybe,
- 6:43you know, just compounding on these thoughts and ideas and,
- 6:48you know, I have to live this. You know, that hour is
- 6:52so important because that hour is
- 6:57just my meditation, and it's my chance to help another person.
- 7:01And I think we've gotten too connected to this room of,
- 7:05man, this meeting is going to save my life.
- 7:09Well, my job in that meeting is to carry the message
- 7:14to the sick and suffering people that are in there for that particular reason.
- 7:19And that's the— like, for me, that's, you know, so I'd come into a place
- 7:23of, you know, am I there to get fed or am I there to feed?
- 7:26And eventually it got to a point where, man, you know,
- 7:31I wasn't getting fed anymore. I'd heard all the magical
- 7:35words in there, the magic words and this, and I heard
- 7:39them talk about it so cool. And I, uh,
- 7:43I began, I began to not get what I was getting out of those places.
- 7:49And then I became in a position where I had to be able to feed
- 7:52people and to give. And yet when I said, when I live
- 7:56in my life and give and help and be of service, I mean,
- 7:59this literature, you know, and on page 14 and
- 8:0215,
- 8:08and in the Bible, it kind of connects to that too. It's, you know,
- 8:11in James, faith without works is dead.
- 8:15And it says this on page 14. It says, faith without works was dead,
- 8:19he said. And how appalling true for the alcoholic!
- 8:22And there's an exclamation mark right there. For if an alcoholic
- 8:27failed to perfect and
- 8:31enlarge his spiritual life through work and
- 8:35self-sacrifice for others, he could not survive.
- 8:40The certain trials and low spots ahead. If he did not work, he would surely
- 8:43drink, and again, if he drank, he would surely die. So there's like
- 8:47that another die word. So if I don't do this, I'm going to die.
- 8:51I think that's important. I think that's almost like, you know, maybe I don't want
- 8:54to touch those 2 wires together. And then so what spiritual principles?
- 8:59I would imagine love, truth,
- 9:03you know, the spiritual principles, you know, behind the steps. And then I'm like,
- 9:06My sponsor makes fun of me, but, you know, this was important to me
- 9:10at a time in my life that I was really going through things in
- 9:13my first stint at sobriety that I,
- 9:16that I thought it was the most important thing to learn the spiritual principles
- 9:20behind the steps. And it was honesty, hope,
- 9:22faith, courage, integrity, willingness,
- 9:28you know, those kinds of things. Right. So like, you know, but am I willing?
- 9:32Right. Am I going to be honest? I don't think when I come in,
- 9:34I'm going to really be honest. Perseverance,
- 9:38spirituality, service, right? These things like brotherly love.
- 9:42Am I willing to do any of that? Because I don't think of the capacity
- 9:46of me just waking up and I'm going to be, have brotherly love today or
- 9:49perseverance today. The commitment through this work
- 9:53is 4 through 9. I'm just making a decision on some
- 9:57of this, right? Am I going to do this work? And maybe you're not even
- 10:00beat into a place of reasonableness and that's okay too. Because there's
- 10:04more alcohol out there and there's more people sitting in the bars.
- 10:08You know, when I went back out after some time of being sober, you know,
- 10:10the same people were in the bars.
- 10:13Um, you know, what an amazing deal because like,
- 10:17I remember last, we had some company over last night for dinner
- 10:21and yeah, this person, you know, I really look up
- 10:25to this person today because, you know, she was a part of my old life.
- 10:29And she was a part of these principles. And I was thinking about this this
- 10:32morning in the shower, you know, of like how
- 10:37I would meet somebody and I would have motive behind meeting them because they had
- 10:40this and I wanted this. And I would keep, you know, moving along
- 10:44those lines of my life because if you had what I wanted,
- 10:48I would get it. Well, what if you
- 10:52have what I want in this deal? Am I willing to go
- 10:56to any length to get that? And so I've been, you know,
- 10:59thinking about— we— I've been every morning, I've been in the chapter We Agnostics
- 11:03for the last, I don't know, 5, 6 days. And,
- 11:07you know, so it talks about beat— being beaten to a state of reasonableness
- 11:12and alcohol being a great persuader. Well,
- 11:17you know, I've, I've kind of like, you know, flowed through I'm not
- 11:21beating myself up too much with where I stand on some of these positions today,
- 11:25but I used to be kind of, uh, I used to get upset when people
- 11:29would talk about their God in these meetings.
- 11:33And I, um, because I thought
- 11:37they were gonna hurt the newcomer. Because when I came in, I didn't want to
- 11:40hear about Jesus, about Allah,
- 11:43about all these different sorts of gods.
- 11:46Because it made me feel uncomfortable,
- 11:51and probably rightly so, because I was living a life with no spiritual
- 11:55obedience. And I don't think that
- 11:59I would want to have a part of some God that could judge me on
- 12:03how I was living, because maybe I wasn't
- 12:07living right. And I wasn't. I wasn't living to spiritual principles.
- 12:11I wasn't living to any standard of life that was even acceptable
- 12:15to anyone. Because I was hurting people, because I was lying
- 12:19to people. I was not living up to this thing of
- 12:23just being one with myself because I was 18 different people,
- 12:26right? You know, I wasn't living an honest life. In the
- 12:31chapter of James, it says in
- 12:34chapter James, or 1 James, or I
- 12:39don't know, it's James chapter 1.
- 12:42Verse 22, it says, do not merely listen to the word
- 12:47and so deceive yourself. Do what it says.
- 12:51Anyone who listens to the word but does not, does not do what
- 12:55it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and
- 12:58after looking at himself goes away and immediately forgets
- 13:02what he looks like. You know,
- 13:05I've been at a time in my life where I couldn't even look in
- 13:08a mirror. I've been like, you know, and if I did,
- 13:11it was just a glance to see if I got any toothpaste on my face,
- 13:14and then I'd go get out of there, you know, because I didn't like what
- 13:18I saw. And, you know, am I gonna forget who
- 13:21I am today? Am I gonna try to live on spiritual principles?
- 13:25And what are those principles? I think,
- 13:28you know, one of the biggest things in my life today is
- 13:32the first part, direction And to continue to watch.
- 13:36And I talk about a lot about this, but, you know, continue to watch for
- 13:40selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up,
- 13:44we ask God to remove them at once.
- 13:48At once. And, you know, that's such
- 13:51a big, uh, thing for me,
- 13:56for something, some way I didn't used to live, right? Because at
- 14:00once means we're Right when something happens, instead of saying
- 14:04that cuss word, I, I ask God into it.
- 14:08Right before I walk in the door to talk to my
- 14:12significant other, right before, you know, and the way I would do
- 14:15this before is I'd come up with a story because, you know, maybe I was
- 14:18late. Maybe I didn't do this. Maybe I didn't
- 14:22do this. And I needed a story first because I,
- 14:25I, you know, I couldn't live on spiritual principles of honesty and I couldn't just
- 14:29say, Hey, I was late because of this. And, you know, I don't think that
- 14:32was because I was always doing bad things. It was because I didn't know how
- 14:36to be honest. And being honest is, it was a big thing because
- 14:40I mean, I've been lying since I was a kid for no particular reason.
- 14:44You know, exaggerating the truth or just making something up for
- 14:48funsies. You know, that's something that I have, I've had to look
- 14:51at. My ego, it's mostly because of my ego, because I don't want you to
- 14:55find out who I really am. Because who I really am in my eyes
- 14:59is not good enough. But see, when I'm living in this
- 15:03world, you know, and I'm drowning
- 15:06myself in these different things, you know, I can drink past
- 15:10that. I can drink past this looking or walking away from
- 15:15the mirror thing, right? Because I'm not thinking about it anymore.
- 15:19But when I'm sober with a sober mind,
- 15:23I can feel that today. And every time I do a
- 15:27lie, we were talking about this last night, every time I do a little lie,
- 15:30a little white lie, every time I don't pray,
- 15:34you know, I'm drifting further away into this life of no spiritual obedience.
- 15:38And for me, this thing, and you know, it kind of
- 15:41goes into both of these, a lot of this literature, I die. And I
- 15:45don't think of dying as, you know, you hear in these places, you know,
- 15:48locked up or covered up. Maybe so. Maybe that's an
- 15:52option. Maybe that's not the option for me though. Maybe the option for
- 15:56me is something else, something deeper, something darker,
- 15:59something where I've hurt more people and I have to live with it every day.
- 16:04It goes on to say in the chapter of James, it says,
- 16:08but the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and
- 16:13continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard but
- 16:16doing it He will be blessed in what he does.
- 16:22I don't think that, you know, that's an immediate thing either,
- 16:26right? I don't believe that because one of
- 16:30those spiritual principles we were talking about was perseverance.
- 16:33Can I persevere through the good and bad? Do I help
- 16:37others through the good and bad, not just the bad? Because that's
- 16:41what I believed when I first came in, right? And Yep, back to page
- 16:45130 in the 12 in 12. That kind of, you know, talks about this.
- 16:48It says,
- 16:51it says, at first he goes
- 16:54along because he must. I went along because I must,
- 16:58because I must do these things, or if not, I'm gonna die.
- 17:03I'm gonna drink, so I must help people.
- 17:07You know, that was one thing when I went back out drinking after some time,
- 17:10a good amount of time too, What did I quit doing is I started—
- 17:15I quit praying to God. I quit helping others.
- 17:18You know, people would be at meetings. No. Well, what am I— am I being
- 17:21loving in my life or is my life looking like me? I— what
- 17:25can I get out of this person? And that's what it started looking like.
- 17:28What can I get out of you? Because, you know, I had nothing to give.
- 17:33But I found this thing, you know, that's the keystone, right? That, you know,
- 17:36we had a new employer. Being all-powerful.
- 17:40And you know, that kind of expounds on the first requirement.
- 17:44Me and a buddy of mine talk a lot about the first requirement.
- 17:47It says the first requirement is that we be convinced that any life
- 17:51run on self-will can hardly be a success.
- 17:56That's the first requirement. So if that be the case,
- 18:00and that's the requirement, me knowing that my life run on me is not going
- 18:04to be successful. So I had to have God,
- 18:09and I had to live by some spiritual principles.
- 18:13Um, you go over, and I think that this is kind of interesting because,
- 18:18you know, the Third Step prayer in there, it says,
- 18:21I've taken away my difficulties. Well, what are my difficulties? Well,
- 18:25they're me. I'm my difficulty because I get
- 18:29in the way. And if I have some things of I, there are usually some
- 18:33things that I need to unblock with God, like some different
- 18:37things. I might have hurt somebody here, I might have lied to someone here,
- 18:42and that's, you know, all that is. And since we're talking about, you know,
- 18:44we're going into 8 and making amends,
- 18:48we'll probably talk about this some more. But, you know, I believe, you know,
- 18:51the making the list is just as important as step 9.
- 18:56Because when I— it was such an interesting thing. And, you know, I remember
- 19:00sitting up at night. The way I went about this is this.
- 19:05And so the 3rd step prayer, there's not a, uh, there's not an amen after
- 19:09it. So what I would do is, because already we already made,
- 19:13you know, through this process, we made a list of the people that hurt us,
- 19:16but really we hurt them. Then we made a list of the fears,
- 19:20and then we made a list of the people we hurt out in our sex
- 19:23conduct. Or how we treated people poorly in the opposite
- 19:27sex. So after that, you know, it says we make a list
- 19:31of people we've harmed just as well, just in a general way.
- 19:36So I got this list and, you know, I've kind of come back and I
- 19:39come up with probably— I've come up with more and more and more as I've
- 19:42gone along. And that's okay. This is not a one-stop shop. There's a lot
- 19:46of words that say continue. And I find more and
- 19:50more and more as I go along because actually my brain's not as cloudy and
- 19:54I'm not And I'm not hesitant, you know, that's an important thing I think,
- 19:58is I'm willing and more open-minded to go deeper.
- 20:04And since I've gone deeper, then I have to come onto this place too of,
- 20:08hey, I'm deep in this deal. And when you know, you know.
- 20:13Man, a good friend of mine, after I came back in, he said, you know,
- 20:15the problem, Corey, with today is you knew before.
- 20:19You didn't know before, right? But now you know, and you knew what
- 20:23you didn't do. So now since you know, you get charged. And he wasn't talking
- 20:27about with the police. He was talking about on a moral standard, since you know
- 20:32now. And if I know now what to do and I just completely
- 20:35push that away, I mean, it tells
- 20:39me, you know, I sicken and die. And it's not, man,
- 20:43the way that looks is not cool. It's not fun.
- 20:47There's no— like, it's, you know, and there's
- 20:50no only way for me to do is blotting out the consciousness of my intolerable
- 20:54situation. That's what I do. And I drink and
- 20:59I blot it out and I blot it out. And so what that looks like
- 21:03is I do take an index card. On the
- 21:07front part of it, I put their name. In the right corner of I'm talking
- 21:11about the amends process. In the right corner of that,
- 21:14I put if I'm gonna be able to make this right now, I put a
- 21:18yes. I put a no or a later.
- 21:22So Y, N, or L at the
- 21:26top right. So I have their name, Y, N, L. I,
- 21:29I write what I did. Well, I stole Susan's
- 21:34money, or I stole this person's this,
- 21:37or I stole Bob's car.
- 21:41And then I go on, you know, on the back,
- 21:45I'll put how I can contact them. I think that's important.
- 21:49You know, today there's a lot of ways we can contact people via social
- 21:52media, mail, phone,
- 21:56email. I mean, you know,
- 21:58it's a really easy way to get in contact
- 22:02with people instead of how it used to be of like driving,
- 22:05you know, 600 miles to go knock on a front
- 22:08door that I don't know if that person's going to open that door.
- 22:13So I, uh, and then on the back side, so on the inventory
- 22:17process, if anybody's not familiar with this, and I'm sure there's some
- 22:22people that don't do this program I'm in, but when
- 22:25we went through the inventory process, we listed out
- 22:28how this person affected myself, how they affected me.
- 22:32Right? So this, I'm looking at the resentments.
- 22:35And did they affect my personal relationships? Did they affect my sexual relationships?
- 22:39Did they affect my, uh, pocketbook,
- 22:43my ambitions, my security, my pride?
- 22:47You know, so we look at that, that we've looked through the lens
- 22:51of how they affected us. So on the backside of that card, I look on
- 22:55the backside of that of how I may have affected them. How I affected
- 22:59their pocketbook, how I affected their ambitions,
- 23:02how I affected their security. Like if it was a woman, right?
- 23:06Their ambitions on how they're going to move forward in the dating world with
- 23:10somebody like me, because that's their past and that's something they got
- 23:14to live with because their trust in men has now gone down
- 23:18because of me. Their security in men has now gone down because
- 23:23of me. Right? And, you know, so in
- 23:26their personal relationships, they don't have these friends because of me,
- 23:29because they put their trust in this dude. But now I do that.
- 23:34So I do that on every single amends. So I know
- 23:37what they— so, I mean, I don't— I can't like tell you what they felt,
- 23:40but I sure— I've thought about how that made me feel. So I
- 23:43might do the courtesy and writing down how— what I did to make them feel
- 23:46in my eyes, because I am going to ask them to.
- 23:50How did I affect you? And so that's so important.
- 23:54But I'll tell you, man, I got just as much of a spiritual experience by
- 23:59writing these amends down than making them.
- 24:02I listened to a dude one time and he was in a prison cell.
- 24:06And when he made these amends, when he wrote down these things, his sponsor told
- 24:10him to go back to his cell and go make these amends. And kind of
- 24:13like, so when I write this down, I've almost become more willing to
- 24:17do it than before. 'Cause I got 'em on paper now and they're
- 24:21real because before they were just a theory, right?
- 24:24And I talked about that in the beginning. You know, this isn't a theory.
- 24:27We have to live this.
- 24:30This is the thing that like is kind of separating, you know, am I willing
- 24:34to go to any length? Am I willing to go stand trial
- 24:38to somebody that I hurt? And it's a hard deal.
- 24:43I heard this man say, he said, you're gonna hear a strange sound.
- 24:48When you go up and, you know, meet somebody. And the other
- 24:52dude was like, what's the strange sound gonna be? It was knock, knock, knock.
- 24:55It was gonna be you knocking on the front door of their house or you
- 24:59calling them, that ringing sound. Because this is not
- 25:02in my wheelhouse of how to live.
- 25:05And for me to be good at this would be crazy and me be ego-driven
- 25:09to think that I'm good at making amends, that I'm good at facing
- 25:13someone and telling them that I hurt them because I've never been good at anything
- 25:16like that. 'Cause that's not in the realm of how I used to live.
- 25:21You know, I probably rambled. Thank you, Pastor Mike. I'm sorry that I went
- 25:25over the— he'll probably cut this down a little bit and find some things that—
- 25:29but anyways, after I do the writing part of on my index card,
- 25:33I shut it down with a 7-step prayer because that means
- 25:37it's complete and I don't have to think about it anymore.
- 25:40And obviously you hear me talk all the time on here and I'm kind of
- 25:43crazy. So what I— my old sponsor used to do, he would tell me,
- 25:46write it Cory, before you go to bed, if your thoughts
- 25:50are racing, write them down on a sheet of paper, fold it up, and put
- 25:54it in your nightstand so the nightstand can worry about it and you can sleep
- 25:57and worry about it tomorrow. Well, I hope you guys have a
- 26:01good, uh, day. It's Saturday. And,
- 26:05um, yeah, man, it's cool because like it— I
- 26:09keep on talking. I just don't know when to shut up. I've had a lot
- 26:12of coffee this morning. Um, we do have an email, and man,
- 26:17me and Pastor Mike, I, I take on new dudes all the time,
- 26:20and I'll take people through this work and just talk about the literature.
- 26:24We have an email, reach out to us. Uh, well, it's on
- 26:28the Daily Ripples. That's probably in the show notes too. I'm not sure.
- 26:32Pastor Mike does all the editing for this. But, uh, thank you guys
- 26:36for listening to me rant. Prayer: Father God, help me
- 26:40live what I believe today. Through your Holy Spirit, guide my
- 26:43actions and not just my thoughts. Reshape my life
- 26:46through the example of Jesus and make my faith real in
- 26:50the way I live.
