- 0:21Speaker 1: and I are sitting down today on the fall equinox
- 0:25Speaker 1: to chat about our relationship and coming together on the
- 0:29Speaker 1: fall equinox 14 years ago. We're going to talk about
- 0:32Speaker 1: our anniversary. We're going to talk about how things have
- 0:37Speaker 1: changed and how we've navigated and how we are each
- 0:39Speaker 1: other's favorite person. So just sit back, relax, and enjoy
- 0:44Speaker 1: this podcast on The Observatory. Welcome back to The Observatory podcast.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Ray and I are sitting here this morning in our
- 0:53Speaker 1: living room on... It's not quite the equinox yet. It's
- 0:57Speaker 1: one day before the equinox.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Right, but when this plays, it'll have been.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It will be on or it'll be past the equinox.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But fall equinox is something pretty special to us. The
- 1:10Speaker 1: 21st is today, which most of the time the equinox
- 1:15Speaker 1: falls on the 21st. But sometimes, every once in a while,
- 1:19Speaker 1: it falls on the 22nd. And that happens to also
- 1:23Speaker 1: be our.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Anniversary.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Our wedding anniversary.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Because the year... We got married. We decided to be
- 1:30Speaker 2: married on the fall equinox.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And the fall equinox was on the 22nd that year.
- 1:36Speaker 1: 2012. 2012. Wow, honey.
- 1:39Speaker 2: 14 years.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I know. We're celebrating 14 years today. And tomorrow, I
- 1:44Speaker 1: should say. And we wanted to talk a little bit
- 1:49Speaker 1: about the equinox, the balance that that is in our experience.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Equal light and dark on this day as it is
- 2:00Speaker 1: on the equinox in the spring. It's that transition period
- 2:05Speaker 1: moving toward winter. And that darker time, colder time, a
- 2:13Speaker 1: time of almost death. And then when spring comes, the rebirth.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Fall is the harvesting. And there were so many things
- 2:21Speaker 1: that we used in our wedding ceremony that were symbolic
- 2:25Speaker 1: of that. Like, for example, the aspen trees. We use
- 2:32Speaker 1: the aspen trees as the metaphor for our own lives
- 2:38Speaker 1: and coming together.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Because we were married in the aspens. We were married
- 2:41Speaker 2: outdoors in the aspen trees.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Actually in an aspen grove up above Park City, Utah.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And the The symbolism of the aspens, if you don't
- 2:56Speaker 1: know and you may know, is that they share a
- 2:59Speaker 1: widespread root system. So it's like one organism spreads over
- 3:07Speaker 1: these giant areas. Utah has the largest one down in
- 3:11Speaker 1: central Utah near Fish Lake called Pando. And it's just
- 3:17Speaker 1: thousands and thousands of acres of Aspen trees everywhere in it,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and they all share the same root system. So basically,
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's one organism with multiple manifestations. And you and I,
- 3:31Speaker 1: our roots came from the same place. We were both
- 3:35Speaker 1: born in the Bear Lake Valley of Idaho, and we
- 3:38Speaker 1: shared an ancestry that was similar. We both came from
- 3:43Speaker 1: pioneer stock, as they say, from the Mormon ancestors who
- 3:47Speaker 1: crossed the plains Yours came from Switzerland. Mine came from
- 3:51Speaker 1: more the England area and migrated across the country at
- 3:57Speaker 1: that time to escape persecution and came here to the
- 4:02Speaker 1: Salt Lake Valley and then started spreading out. And we
- 4:05Speaker 1: ended up, both of our families ended up in the
- 4:08Speaker 1: Bear Lake Valley of southeast Idaho. And in a time,
- 4:14Speaker 1: 1863 was when my great-grandfather Amos went there And yours
- 4:18Speaker 1: came shortly after that and settled in the little town
- 4:22Speaker 1: of Bern, Idaho, named for Bern, Bern, as they say, Switzerland. Correct.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Because they were from a small area just outside of
- 4:32Speaker 2: Bern in the Dimtigan Valley.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Dimtigan Valley, which we visited.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Right, which was beautiful.
- 4:38Speaker 1: We got to see that town. Heritage that you had
- 4:42Speaker 1: and witnessed those who.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Were still there. And family that's still there, yeah. Family
- 4:44Speaker 2: that is still there.
- 4:45Speaker 1: That was one of the best trips of my life.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It really was. It wasn't my family. It was your
- 4:50Speaker 1: family I got to witness, but it was one of
- 4:52Speaker 1: the most amazing things that I've got to witness, especially
- 4:55Speaker 1: since you had relatives that didn't come across and were
- 4:58Speaker 1: still there, didn't speak English, but they were really into music.
- 5:02Speaker 2: They were into music. They were into community. They were
- 5:05Speaker 2: into the forest, into all the things that you love. Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And when we got married, we recognized that we also
- 5:13Speaker 2: had very large families, both of us. We come from
- 5:17Speaker 2: big families.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I have seven siblings and you have six.
- 5:22Speaker 2: And so it was kind of that, again, going back
- 5:26Speaker 2: to that large root system and that large connectivity and
- 5:30Speaker 2: just wanting to be married outside and in the Aspens
- 5:33Speaker 2: and on the fall equinox because... I remember telling you,
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, we're in the fall of our lives. We're
- 5:39Speaker 2: starting something in the fall of our lives. And I
- 5:43Speaker 2: had a big aha this last week.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:48Speaker 2: So, um, I had been, I have a women's circle
- 5:52Speaker 2: group that I belong to and we were connecting and, um,
- 5:57Speaker 2: the woman that kind of facilitates it, she, she welcomed
- 6:00Speaker 2: us to the season of Virgo.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And, um, And a little backstory before I talk about
- 6:07Speaker 2: Virgo is I remember my brother-in-law asking me at one
- 6:11Speaker 2: point as the years kept going by and I'm not
- 6:14Speaker 2: getting married, he's like, you know, you might just be picky.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And I think I've shared this on the podcast before.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And I said, no, I don't think I'm picky. I
- 6:23Speaker 2: just want, I want something deep. I want someone whose
- 6:28Speaker 2: waters run deep. So that was kind of what I
- 6:32Speaker 2: had held off looking. I didn't want to merger. I
- 6:34Speaker 2: didn't want an acquisition. I didn't want a power couple.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You'd had enough experience with that.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I wanted something very real and tangible and something where
- 6:46Speaker 2: someone who was deep, right, that explored mysteries of life
- 6:51Speaker 2: and all of that. And so as we're starting our
- 6:55Speaker 2: women's circle, and Krista welcomes us to the season of Virgo,
- 7:00Speaker 2: and you are a Virgo.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I am a Virgo. Along with my two sons.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yes. And I said, you know, the season of Virgo.
- 7:09Speaker 2: And she said, oh, yes. Virgo is the inner landscape.
- 7:15Speaker 2: The depths of who we are. And I became actually emotional.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Because I suddenly, in that moment, felt you were the one.
- 7:28Speaker 2: You know, this deep one that I had been calling out.
- 7:33Speaker 2: into my life for some time without knowing that you were.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And entering fall, we're entering a, if you talk about
- 7:44Speaker 2: shadow and light, a shadow season, which is not bad,
- 7:48Speaker 2: but it's more reflective, right?
- 7:50Speaker 1: Sure.
- 7:51Speaker 2: It's to go inside. It's to have more self-exploration, self-discovery.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Reflection.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And healing.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And so.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I just became emotional because I was like, oh my gosh,
- 8:05Speaker 2: how have I not seen this before? That I have
- 8:10Speaker 2: felt that you were the deep one because I now
- 8:12Speaker 2: joke that some days there's like, you know, we may
- 8:16Speaker 2: be way above my hips. I've waded in way too
- 8:19Speaker 2: deep sometimes. But just that whole metaphor of the fall
- 8:26Speaker 2: and the fall equinox and the season of shadow and
- 8:30Speaker 2: the inner work. And as I reflect back on our
- 8:34Speaker 2: marriage and our lives, I can see so clearly how
- 8:41Speaker 2: that is what we have been doing. Without it being
- 8:47Speaker 2: a goal or a strategy or a five-year plan, I
- 8:52Speaker 2: have said to you often, we couldn't have goal-set ourselves
- 8:57Speaker 2: to where we are. We had to just show up
- 9:00Speaker 2: and live our lives. And the first few years, me
- 9:03Speaker 2: never having been married, you with the whole change with
- 9:10Speaker 2: having children and a former wife and all of that
- 9:13Speaker 2: that I had to learn how to adapt to and
- 9:15Speaker 2: we had to navigate together. All of that, those first
- 9:19Speaker 2: few years were different than the latter years have been.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But it's been such a.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Pivotal and meaningful path for me. And just when I
- 9:36Speaker 2: look at the self that I had curated, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 2: from the time that I left college and then the
- 9:45Speaker 2: self that I am today, those changes and those, you know,
- 9:52Speaker 2: that coming into knowing who I am has been really
- 9:58Speaker 2: meaningful for me.
- 10:00Speaker 1: So let me ask you a question. I don't think
- 10:04Speaker 1: I've ever asked you this before. What do you think
- 10:07Speaker 1: it was or is within you that made you feel
- 10:12Speaker 1: like you wanted to have someone in your life whose
- 10:15Speaker 1: waters ran deep? I mean, what was the draw to that?
- 10:18Speaker 1: What was it about you? that you felt like that
- 10:20Speaker 1: was something that was necessary in your life?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Well, for myself, I think it was a place that
- 10:27Speaker 2: I often went. I was always very curious about my
- 10:32Speaker 2: emotional landscape. Growing up as a middle child in a
- 10:36Speaker 2: family of seven, I was always aware of the older
- 10:41Speaker 2: ones and the younger ones, of emotions. And I think
- 10:45Speaker 2: that that emotional landscape was a place that I was
- 10:48Speaker 2: really curious about. You know, when I entered the corporate
- 10:51Speaker 2: world and I remember when the Daniel Goldman book came
- 10:56Speaker 2: out and he introduced this thing called EQ. I read
- 11:01Speaker 2: those books with such an appetite of what is this?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Why is EQ more important than IQ? And what does
- 11:08Speaker 2: that mean? And all of the personality tests that were
- 11:12Speaker 2: very popular. EQ is like emotional intelligence. And It was
- 11:19Speaker 2: all the studies, the Myers-Briggs test, the DISC test, all
- 11:23Speaker 2: these sort of evaluations that I went through as an
- 11:28Speaker 2: executive when they were working to build more cohesive teams
- 11:33Speaker 2: and teams that understood each other and that would take
- 11:35Speaker 2: risks together. So as part of that development, that corporate development,
- 11:40Speaker 2: it was merging so perfectly with this appetite that I
- 11:44Speaker 2: had for self-discovery. And I look back on that and
- 11:49Speaker 2: I eventually got to a place where those tests became
- 11:54Speaker 2: less appealing to me because I started to see, especially
- 12:00Speaker 2: in the work environment, people kind of showing up and saying,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I'm this or I'm that, so deal with me. And
- 12:08Speaker 2: there was no adapting their style to fit the world
- 12:11Speaker 2: or understanding someone else's style so that they could work together.
- 12:15Speaker 2: It was just like, I'm a driver, get over it.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, they'd categorize themselves and give themselves permission to act
- 12:21Speaker 1: that way rather than see that they didn't have to.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Right, rather than taking it as data or as information.
- 12:27Speaker 2: And so that sort of strong lines around this is
- 12:33Speaker 2: who I am, so get over it, or this is
- 12:36Speaker 2: who I am, that makes me better than you, started
- 12:40Speaker 2: to create a lot of confusion for me because people,
- 12:46Speaker 2: You can imagine, in a competitive, commerce-driven workplace, some of
- 12:52Speaker 2: that can be really damaging for people who are more
- 12:55Speaker 2: the glue. They're more quiet. The work is done in
- 13:01Speaker 2: more of an amiable way. And so some of those
- 13:05Speaker 2: things started to feel really uncomfortable for me. And I
- 13:10Speaker 2: kind of moved away from the whole testing idea because
- 13:13Speaker 2: I didn't like people... saying what they were, gave them
- 13:18Speaker 2: permission to behave badly, basically. But it did feed that curiosity.
- 13:23Speaker 2: So to go back to your question, why was I
- 13:26Speaker 2: drawn to that? I think there's a part of me,
- 13:30Speaker 2: and I'm a Sagittarius, so I live in the mystery.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I live in the free-spirited part of the mystery and
- 13:44Speaker 2: the wonder of and the creation of it all. And
- 13:48Speaker 2: so I wanted more of that. And I wanted someone
- 13:52Speaker 2: who would, instead of defining so hard today, dream about
- 13:57Speaker 2: tomorrow with me and see it really uninhibited and without
- 14:04Speaker 2: fear and without limitation. And so to me, that's what
- 14:08Speaker 2: the deeper waters meant. It meant someone who wasn't afraid
- 14:12Speaker 2: of possibility. and what could be. Now, while I may
- 14:19Speaker 2: have initially had that as the potential of my own ambition,
- 14:25Speaker 2: and I didn't really see it as a depth of my,
- 14:30Speaker 2: let's call it spiritual landscape or spirit landscape, that's where
- 14:36Speaker 2: when you came in, that shifted. You know, it shifted
- 14:40Speaker 2: with less focus about all the possibility of my ambition
- 14:43Speaker 2: and what I could create and what I could turn
- 14:45Speaker 2: into commerce and what I could explore, it became more
- 14:49Speaker 2: that a deeper dive internally into spirit, into knowing what
- 14:58Speaker 2: life is all about. I remember the day when you
- 15:00Speaker 2: told me that life's an illusion. And I just remember thinking,
- 15:05Speaker 2: what does that even mean? And how can he say that?
- 15:07Speaker 2: And how can he feel so convicted by that? I
- 15:10Speaker 2: wanted to understand how how you had come to that
- 15:14Speaker 2: conclusion and why you lived there. And, you know, given
- 15:17Speaker 2: your Virgo nature, and we've talked about this on the podcast,
- 15:25Speaker 2: you know, that because you live in your head and
- 15:28Speaker 2: you solve in your head and you explore in your
- 15:31Speaker 2: head and then you bring it into your heart, the
- 15:35Speaker 2: challenge for you has been that knowing, that head knowing
- 15:39Speaker 2: that makes you right, And the heart knowing that makes
- 15:42Speaker 2: you right. And really moving, migrating more of the head
- 15:46Speaker 2: to the heart so that the knowing that you have
- 15:49Speaker 2: intuitively is always coming from your heart.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that was definitely a process to get there because
- 15:59Speaker 1: I lived my life, I was the youngest in my family,
- 16:03Speaker 1: so I didn't feel like my voice was heard. I
- 16:05Speaker 1: was kind of in the background most of the time
- 16:07Speaker 1: and didn't feel like I was being heard. But I
- 16:11Speaker 1: knew within myself, in my head, that I was right
- 16:14Speaker 1: about a lot of things. And that's kind of part
- 16:18Speaker 1: of my nature was I know that I'm right. But
- 16:21Speaker 1: I wasn't super expressive about telling people that I was right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: You weren't obnoxious or arrogant.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I wasn't arrogant about it. But I would listen to
- 16:30Speaker 1: people say something. And then I would say within my head,
- 16:34Speaker 1: that's total bullshit. You know, you're, you're, this is, you're,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you're speaking of illusions. You're, you know, this is totally
- 16:43Speaker 1: an illusion. That's really not, not real. That's not true.
- 16:47Speaker 1: But I was doing that within myself. I wasn't saying it,
- 16:49Speaker 1: but I got to a certain point in my life.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And this was in recent years where I, I didn't
- 16:54Speaker 1: want to be in that energy. I didn't want to
- 16:56Speaker 1: feel like that because it would close me down to
- 16:59Speaker 1: hearing more. And so I wanted to let go of
- 17:03Speaker 1: my need to be right.
- 17:04Speaker 2: It prevented you from being curious.
- 17:05Speaker 1: It prevented me from being curious. That's a great way
- 17:07Speaker 1: to put it. So when I started to let go
- 17:12Speaker 1: of that need to be right about something, it still
- 17:15Speaker 1: crops up once in a while, but I notice it now.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I can notice when I'm feeling that need to be
- 17:22Speaker 1: right about something. And in the world that we live
- 17:25Speaker 1: in today, I mean, that's everyone wants to be. It
- 17:27Speaker 1: seems like it's a world full of Virgo's. Everyone thinks
- 17:32Speaker 1: they're right. And I feel like that dynamic that exists
- 17:42Speaker 1: in the world today is not serving humanity. And I
- 17:46Speaker 1: wanted to let go of that, and I wanted to
- 17:47Speaker 1: be more curious. I wanted to be able to be
- 17:50Speaker 1: open to hearing and listening. And, you know, I've got
- 17:54Speaker 1: friends that are, you know, conspiracy theorists. And I, I
- 17:59Speaker 1: listened to what they say. I just got back from
- 18:01Speaker 1: rabbit stick and, you know, some of the conversations that
- 18:04Speaker 1: we had around the fire there were so open. And I,
- 18:07Speaker 1: I listened, I really tried to listen to what people's
- 18:10Speaker 1: opinions were and, and kind of questioned them. Why do
- 18:14Speaker 1: you feel that way? And, and, you know, there's various reasons,
- 18:18Speaker 1: but the beauty of attending a gathering like that, where
- 18:21Speaker 1: there's 500 people, uh, is that you get to hear
- 18:24Speaker 1: and experience so many diverse, um, ways of being, people
- 18:29Speaker 1: from all walks of life, all over the country, not
- 18:33Speaker 1: only this country, other countries, lots of people there from Canada.
- 18:37Speaker 1: And it was refreshing to walk in the energy of
- 18:42Speaker 1: that openness for a week and have that experience because
- 18:48Speaker 1: it's beautiful to witness that.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Well, and that's a perfect word because when I was
- 18:55Speaker 2: having this aha the other night with the women's group,
- 18:58Speaker 2: I just came into such a knowing. And it's, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 2: I've had some of that recently with other things. But
- 19:08Speaker 2: I had this such deep appreciation and knowing that when
- 19:13Speaker 2: our lives came together, that I had come to the
- 19:19Speaker 2: point where the work... I now see it more in
- 19:22Speaker 2: reflection than I did then. What was driving me then
- 19:26Speaker 2: was just a desire to be married. I really felt
- 19:31Speaker 2: I had turned 50. I didn't want to be alone anymore.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I didn't find my days filled with work being fulfilling enough.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I wanted a partner. And now I see that there
- 19:44Speaker 2: was this undertone of much of the work that was
- 19:47Speaker 2: still left for me to do and is still left
- 19:50Speaker 2: for me to do had to be done in partnership.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I had to have a witness to my life in
- 19:58Speaker 2: a meaningful and intimate way that only partnership could bring me.
- 20:04Speaker 2: And that doesn't mean that, you know, everyone who doesn't
- 20:07Speaker 2: have a partner today, isn't having meaningful change. Perhaps they
- 20:11Speaker 2: had a partner earlier in life. I had not had
- 20:14Speaker 2: that partnership other than siblings. And so the work that I,
- 20:23Speaker 2: where I was in my life, the work that was
- 20:25Speaker 2: calling to me without me really being aware of, but
- 20:28Speaker 2: I had this knowing, was, oh my goodness, it was
- 20:32Speaker 2: all in the fall. It was on the equinox. It
- 20:38Speaker 2: was with a Virgo. It was with someone that our
- 20:43Speaker 2: histories were common. We knew each other from that.
- 20:47Speaker 1: There was a familiarity.
- 20:48Speaker 2: The familiarity. And there was this invitation to the deep end,
- 20:57Speaker 2: and the deep end being my internal landscape. And it
- 21:03Speaker 2: was just emotional for me. And the witness that you
- 21:06Speaker 2: have been, there's days when it's like, I don't need
- 21:10Speaker 2: anyone to tell me. And then I get quiet and
- 21:14Speaker 2: I'm like, or do I? And I do. Because we've
- 21:19Speaker 2: talked about it before, my own perceptions, your own perceptions,
- 21:23Speaker 2: our own preferences can really keep us blind to the
- 21:27Speaker 2: very thing that life keeps bringing to us over and
- 21:31Speaker 2: over and over again for us to learn. And that's
- 21:35Speaker 2: that's kind of the work that's been happening is a
- 21:38Speaker 2: lot of things that kept coming up as a question. Like,
- 21:42Speaker 2: and I've had people say this to me, like, why
- 21:44Speaker 2: does this come up? I thought I already solved this.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Why does this keep coming up? And it's, those are
- 21:49Speaker 2: the things that keep coming up because it's still work
- 21:53Speaker 2: that's left undone. Right. We watched a really interesting podcast
- 21:59Speaker 2: yesterday with Mel Robbins and her husband, Chris. And they
- 22:03Speaker 2: openly talk about the challenges that they faced in their
- 22:06Speaker 2: marriage and the crushing death that they were trying to
- 22:09Speaker 2: navigate through and the things that they wish they would
- 22:12Speaker 2: have known before that they learned through the challenge and
- 22:17Speaker 2: the heartache and the way they treated each other. But
- 22:20Speaker 2: one of the things that they said was, you know,
- 22:23Speaker 2: that a therapist had said to them is, can you
- 22:25Speaker 2: look at the person that you're married to and say,
- 22:28Speaker 2: you're my favorite person? And we both looked at each
- 22:32Speaker 2: other and said, like, you're my favorite person.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally feel that way.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And I don't think there's, since our lives have come together,
- 22:40Speaker 2: I don't think there's been a day that I have
- 22:41Speaker 2: not felt that. And so, you know, as we celebrate 14,
- 22:47Speaker 2: 14 married, 16 actually together, you know, you are my
- 22:51Speaker 2: favorite person. And I can only guess what the next
- 22:56Speaker 2: 14 years are going to look like. I even said
- 22:59Speaker 2: that to you. I said, Wow, if you think of
- 23:01Speaker 2: all the things that we've done, all the change that
- 23:03Speaker 2: we've navigated, is it just amazing where we might be
- 23:09Speaker 2: in the next 14 years?
- 23:10Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think we should be straightforward and honest
- 23:16Speaker 1: with the audience and just saying that it wasn't perfect
- 23:20Speaker 1: from the get-go. There were definitely challenges and things that
- 23:23Speaker 1: we navigated together. things that you needed to let go of,
- 23:29Speaker 1: things that I needed to let go of. And, you know,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you had never been in a relationship where you had
- 23:37Speaker 1: considered getting married, and I hadn't done that for over
- 23:44Speaker 1: a decade. When I left my first marriage, it had
- 23:47Speaker 1: been a decade of being single. I was pretty independent,
- 23:51Speaker 1: kind of had my life path figured out until I
- 23:55Speaker 1: realized that I was not happy I realized I needed
- 23:59Speaker 1: something more. It's like you said, you realized that you
- 24:02Speaker 1: needed to have a reflection, a mirror, someone else that
- 24:08Speaker 1: you could walk with, someone else that could swim with
- 24:12Speaker 1: you in the deep end.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And that's what I felt like I needed too. I've
- 24:19Speaker 1: got a couple of friends who got divorced and they
- 24:21Speaker 1: never remarried nor even considered getting remarried. They continued to
- 24:25Speaker 1: live alone. Because navigating relationships is not easy, and it's
- 24:30Speaker 1: easier to just remain single, not have to navigate through
- 24:34Speaker 1: the difficult times and all of that. But the growth
- 24:37Speaker 1: that you can achieve with another person, as you said,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I think is significantly more than you can do by yourself. Right.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Well, one of the other things that Mel and her husband,
- 24:50Speaker 2: they were talking about a therapist that they had worked
- 24:52Speaker 2: together with, Terry Rill. And I loved what he said
- 24:56Speaker 2: because we talk about this in the book that we're writing,
- 25:00Speaker 2: and that is we all marry our unfinished business. And,
- 25:04Speaker 2: you know, at times we may or may not be
- 25:07Speaker 2: aware of what is unfinished. And we may come into life,
- 25:14Speaker 2: and especially after the Gabor Mate training that I went through,
- 25:18Speaker 2: the Compassionate Inquiry, that unfinished business begins at a very
- 25:23Speaker 2: young age. We begin adapting at the age of five
- 25:26Speaker 2: and creating and curating a story that limits us. We
- 25:33Speaker 2: adapt because of our environment, because of our needs maybe
- 25:37Speaker 2: not being met or the early messages, pre-language, that start
- 25:42Speaker 2: to tell us things. And so we adapt and we
- 25:46Speaker 2: start curating the story. And so it's later in life
- 25:49Speaker 2: when you really have the opportunity to revisit that story
- 25:52Speaker 2: and to let it go. And while that all sounds
- 25:56Speaker 2: like a great path and concept, it is challenging to
- 26:01Speaker 2: revisit that story that is such a part of who
- 26:04Speaker 2: you are and whether or not you're even truly aware
- 26:08Speaker 2: of it. And when people come up against that, that
- 26:14Speaker 2: can be tremendously frightening and unsettling and the blaring signs
- 26:21Speaker 2: can go off. I'm not safe. I'm not safe. I'm
- 26:23Speaker 2: not safe. Because you've curated this for the sole reason
- 26:27Speaker 2: to create safety.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:30Speaker 2: And so, you know, as I thought about that and
- 26:34Speaker 2: I thought about some of the challenges that I was facing,
- 26:38Speaker 2: there were many steps we took that life started to
- 26:41Speaker 2: be very untraditional for us. You know, one of the
- 26:46Speaker 2: first ones was telling you to stop working because intuitively
- 26:51Speaker 2: I knew that if you were unhappy... Coming home unhappy
- 26:55Speaker 2: from work, that was not going to be something that
- 26:58Speaker 2: I was going to do well with. Right. Because I
- 27:02Speaker 2: knew how I didn't like to come home unhappy from work.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And I didn't want to be unhappy.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:07Speaker 1: It was super stressful.
- 27:09Speaker 2: It was a stressful time at the time you were
- 27:11Speaker 2: doing mortgages, and it was a super unusual stressful time
- 27:14Speaker 2: for that. And so everything was like a perfect storm.
- 27:18Speaker 2: And I wasn't even working at the time. And so
- 27:22Speaker 2: it was like, how's this going to work? I'm going
- 27:25Speaker 2: to quit working and you're not working, you know? And
- 27:28Speaker 2: so those, those very non-traditional places that we looked, I
- 27:34Speaker 2: think helped us. And then, you know, there was all
- 27:39Speaker 2: of the shift and changes with your, you know, your children,
- 27:44Speaker 2: they were still young. Um, there was still a lot
- 27:48Speaker 2: of co-parenting, um, How that showed up and how that worked,
- 27:53Speaker 2: I had zero familiarity with and really zero preparedness for.
- 27:59Speaker 2: And so all of that was a lot of change.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And stressful.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And stressful. And then I had come in. We had
- 28:08Speaker 2: both come in with coping mechanisms that were unhealthy. I
- 28:14Speaker 2: would turn to alcohol. It was easy for me to
- 28:17Speaker 2: just say, Let me have a glass of wine and relax.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And that was, the more stressful it became, then that
- 28:29Speaker 2: meter reflected that. And that was not something healthy that
- 28:33Speaker 2: was going to be healthy in our lives together. It
- 28:36Speaker 2: wasn't the way you coped. And so it wasn't something
- 28:41Speaker 2: that felt like it was going to be something we
- 28:46Speaker 2: would enjoy together. nor did I have a healthy relationship
- 28:50Speaker 2: with it. And so all of that just in those
- 28:54Speaker 2: early couple of years was like, okay, here's something that's
- 28:58Speaker 2: going to have to change. Here's something that's going to
- 29:00Speaker 2: have to change. We kept bumping up into things that
- 29:03Speaker 2: had to be changed. And I just think about the
- 29:07Speaker 2: willingness that we more intuitively had to kind of look
- 29:11Speaker 2: at those things one at a time and not be
- 29:13Speaker 2: overwhelmed by them. Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:16Speaker 1: And I was an internalizer. You know, I kept everything inside.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I didn't communicate well. And as we were navigating through
- 29:26Speaker 1: all of these things, I recognized that I needed to
- 29:29Speaker 1: do better at that. And I'm still learning how to
- 29:32Speaker 1: do that better.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Well, but, you know, and that's, again, we talk about
- 29:37Speaker 2: that in the book, about just selflessness. of those patterns
- 29:40Speaker 2: that we each had to break you were a runner
- 29:45Speaker 2: when things got hard you'd leave and I was a
- 29:49Speaker 2: chaser you know I would at least while you were
- 29:53Speaker 2: physically in the house it was like I would follow
- 29:55Speaker 2: you around like let's finish this conversation let's finish this
- 29:57Speaker 2: conversation and so There were a lot of those things
- 30:01Speaker 2: that had to be learned and adapted and we had
- 30:05Speaker 2: to give each other grace. I sometimes wonder how we
- 30:11Speaker 2: figured that out or if it wasn't as much figured
- 30:16Speaker 2: out as we both had such a desire for it
- 30:19Speaker 2: to work that our hearts just kept staying open and
- 30:24Speaker 2: we were just guided by grace. more of our higher
- 30:29Speaker 2: knowing that we didn't really recognize as much at the time.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Yeah. I think for me to be open and communicating,
- 30:38Speaker 1: I need to feel safe to be able to do that.
- 30:41Speaker 1: So I don't feel like I'm being judged or I
- 30:44Speaker 1: don't feel like I'm being criticized or all those things.
- 30:49Speaker 1: These are my preferences. It's something that, you know, for
- 30:54Speaker 1: me it's something that I– become more open to, but
- 30:59Speaker 1: you've always been my safe place. You've been something I've
- 31:02Speaker 1: been able to really talk to you about anything and
- 31:05Speaker 1: know that, uh, even if I might say something that
- 31:08Speaker 1: might be upsetting to you, that you're not going to
- 31:11Speaker 1: just walk out the door. You're going to, we're going
- 31:14Speaker 1: to sit here and we're going to process through this
- 31:16Speaker 1: together and we're going to approach it together. We're going
- 31:19Speaker 1: to be a team. We're not, um, We are definitely
- 31:24Speaker 1: each other's best friends. You're my favorite person. I'm your
- 31:28Speaker 1: favorite person. And so we navigate those things together. Does
- 31:31Speaker 1: that mean we only like all the same things? No.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I have my independence of going
- 31:38Speaker 1: to the gatherings and doing that because I really enjoy it.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And you know that I enjoy it. And you have
- 31:43Speaker 1: your independence for the creative things that you work on,
- 31:46Speaker 1: the things that you do. and working with businesses and
- 31:50Speaker 1: the different things that you do to do consulting work
- 31:53Speaker 1: with people. But those are the things that feed your soul.
- 31:58Speaker 1: These are the things that feed my soul. Yet at
- 31:59Speaker 1: the same time, we can talk about those things together,
- 32:03Speaker 1: process those things together. You're reflecting things off me and
- 32:08Speaker 1: I'm reflecting things off you so that we can have
- 32:13Speaker 1: more than just what's for me. having more than just
- 32:16Speaker 1: what's in my head to figure it out. Because even
- 32:19Speaker 1: though I might think I know everything, one thing I
- 32:24Speaker 1: do know is that I don't know everything. I finally
- 32:28Speaker 1: learned that I don't know everything. And letting go of that,
- 32:34Speaker 1: that's been life-changing for me because it allowed me to
- 32:38Speaker 1: be more curious. It allowed me to be more open.
- 32:40Speaker 1: It allowed me to see others' points of view more.
- 32:44Speaker 1: without that feeling within myself, oh, you know, that's totally
- 32:49Speaker 1: an illusion. You don't know what you're talking about. I
- 32:51Speaker 1: don't feel like that anymore. I remain open to others
- 32:57Speaker 1: and their opinions. I'm less Virgo-like in that aspect now
- 33:02Speaker 1: than I was before, but I had to learn how
- 33:05Speaker 1: to not be that way.
- 33:07Speaker 2: I love to hear that because it's, you know, I
- 33:10Speaker 2: do find our conversations just really magical. Um, I'm very
- 33:15Speaker 2: curious about the things that you love to do and
- 33:18Speaker 2: that you like doing, you know, I don't, I don't
- 33:22Speaker 2: find it, um, as enjoyable to drum for four hours.
- 33:26Speaker 2: We kind of joke about that, but I like to
- 33:28Speaker 2: come for a few or for the gatherings, you know,
- 33:30Speaker 2: I'll come for one or two days, but I'm not
- 33:32Speaker 2: there for the whole week. And, you know, and similarly,
- 33:36Speaker 2: you'll engage with me with working with others and people,
- 33:40Speaker 2: and you found it really enjoyable. Um, you know, we
- 33:44Speaker 2: both love the, the expression of finding ways to express
- 33:52Speaker 2: and yours predominantly is in music. There's other things that
- 33:56Speaker 2: are cropping up, but you also reminded me that initially
- 33:59Speaker 2: it wasn't music. You know, that expression first started with
- 34:03Speaker 2: photography and then with gardening and then moved to music. And,
- 34:08Speaker 2: you know, that gave me a lot of, um, pause
- 34:12Speaker 2: because I, I have looked and wondered why getting to
- 34:18Speaker 2: my love for writing has been such a, like a
- 34:22Speaker 2: thorny path. Like why I couldn't just because I loved it,
- 34:25Speaker 2: why couldn't I just go there? And, um, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 2: what makes me feel inhibited and what makes me feel self-critical.
- 34:35Speaker 2: And again, it's a story that only I've curated.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 2: And while I would like to say, oh, it's because
- 34:42Speaker 2: of this or it's because of that, it is only
- 34:45Speaker 2: a story that lives inside my head that prevents me
- 34:49Speaker 2: from embracing it. And so each step that I take
- 34:51Speaker 2: where I can embrace it more just unravels some of
- 34:55Speaker 2: that story that has been told. And I'm getting there.
- 35:00Speaker 1: You are. It's been cool to witness and watch you
- 35:05Speaker 1: let go of your self, Judgment around writing and just
- 35:10Speaker 1: being open to let it go. You've started a sub
- 35:13Speaker 1: stack now. And, you know, as it got started, it
- 35:18Speaker 1: kind of blew up. It was interesting to watch how
- 35:22Speaker 1: many people were coming and making comments to you on
- 35:25Speaker 1: you in your beginning in sub stack. I think it's awesome.
- 35:29Speaker 1: I know.
- 35:30Speaker 2: And I was, you know, I was like kind of
- 35:33Speaker 2: shocked about it. Yeah. And very curious as to why
- 35:36Speaker 2: people were, you know, not just why they were spending
- 35:40Speaker 2: some time to write to me and say things to me,
- 35:43Speaker 2: everything about my, from little things like my hair.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:47Speaker 2: You know, because I had posted a picture and introduced
- 35:50Speaker 2: myself and, and yet at the same time, it felt
- 35:54Speaker 2: just so authentic for me. And then there was this
- 35:59Speaker 2: huge message that just kind of whispered to me, just
- 36:01Speaker 2: show up and be who you are. Like, Stop trying
- 36:05Speaker 2: to write the perfect piece. Stop trying to express it
- 36:08Speaker 2: in the perfect way. Stop trying to sound clever or
- 36:11Speaker 2: this or that. All those things that are so busy
- 36:14Speaker 2: in my head saying, it's just show up and be
- 36:17Speaker 2: who you are. And that's so much easier. And yet
- 36:24Speaker 2: the barrier that we've created in our minds to get
- 36:28Speaker 2: there takes kind of taking one of those boulders off
- 36:32Speaker 2: at a time.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 2: And moving it to the side to say this doesn't matter.
- 36:36Speaker 1: It becomes effortless.
- 36:37Speaker 2: It really does.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I've seen that with me and playing music, that it
- 36:43Speaker 1: became effortless when I recognized that music is infinite. It's
- 36:48Speaker 1: created in the moment. Nothing needs to be written down
- 36:52Speaker 1: or recorded. It's like the mandalas from Tibet, the sand
- 36:57Speaker 1: paintings where they create the sand paintings. It's just this meticulous,
- 37:02Speaker 1: you know, multiple people doing it, like one grain of
- 37:04Speaker 1: sand at a time, and then they just wipe it away.
- 37:08Speaker 2: And start over.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Start over. Yeah. You know, we don't need to be
- 37:12Speaker 1: so attached to our creations. Just allow them to be.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Allow the beauty to exist, and being part of the
- 37:18Speaker 1: creation of the beauty makes us feel beautiful, too. It's
- 37:22Speaker 1: like the flower. If the flower is beautiful, I must
- 37:24Speaker 1: be beautiful, too.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:26Speaker 1: If the writing is beautiful, I must be beautiful, too.
- 37:28Speaker 1: It's just a reflection of you. As the music is
- 37:32Speaker 1: of me, we don't want it to be anything. We're
- 37:35Speaker 1: not expecting it to be something. We're not looking for fame.
- 37:39Speaker 1: We're not looking for fortune. We just want to express
- 37:44Speaker 1: in this thing we call a lifetime.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Oh, sweetheart, I love that. I mean, I believe, you know,
- 37:51Speaker 2: as we celebrate the 14th year, that the magic that
- 37:55Speaker 2: has happened in being in partnership and marriage with you
- 38:00Speaker 2: has been the ability for us to find ways where
- 38:04Speaker 2: we can both be more and more and more of
- 38:07Speaker 2: who we are truly meant to be. We have very
- 38:10Speaker 2: little traditional roles. If the garbage needs dumping, there are
- 38:16Speaker 2: days you dump it. If I'm the one that's noticing it,
- 38:20Speaker 2: I don't suddenly get upset and say, Scott, you haven't
- 38:24Speaker 2: dumped the garbage. I dumped the garbage.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I even do the dishes sometimes.
- 38:29Speaker 2: You do the dishes sometimes.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Not very often, but I do do the dishes sometimes.
- 38:33Speaker 2: You know, and there's, you bring me, you cut beautiful
- 38:36Speaker 2: flowers yesterday from the sunflowers and brought into me. And
- 38:41Speaker 2: it's just those little surprises that take us out of
- 38:47Speaker 2: kind of a stuck role or just, you know, places
- 38:52Speaker 2: that we become so habitually comfortable in that we stop
- 38:58Speaker 2: looking to say, how do I show up and how
- 39:01Speaker 2: can it be different? And it feels so good when
- 39:07Speaker 2: it can be all in flow and that we do
- 39:11Speaker 2: for each other. And by doing for each other, we're
- 39:13Speaker 2: actually doing for ourselves.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Can I give you a metaphor that just came to me?
- 39:20Speaker 1: Maybe we can end with this. You can comment on it.
- 39:24Speaker 1: but I remember back to our our wedding and then
- 39:31Speaker 1: I remember our honeymoon so we went on our honeymoon
- 39:36Speaker 1: to the island of Dominica the nature island 365 rivers
- 39:41Speaker 1: on that island it's volcanic hot springs everywhere it's one
- 39:45Speaker 1: of the most beautiful places I've ever been to in
- 39:49Speaker 1: my life it's it's a hidden gem.
- 39:51Speaker 2: It really is fantastic and we stayed in a tree house.
- 39:55Speaker 1: We stayed in a tree house for a week with
- 39:57Speaker 1: a tropical storm one night yes and um we had
- 40:03Speaker 1: an experience there where we went to the ocean and
- 40:06Speaker 1: uh we went swimming out into the ocean so ray doesn't.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Swim and it had champagne bubbles champagne bubbles it had
- 40:15Speaker 2: uh There were hot springs. Hot springs. So there was
- 40:17Speaker 2: like a lot of bubbles. It felt like you were
- 40:19Speaker 2: swimming in champagne bubbles. Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 1: We're snorkeling. So you can look down and you can
- 40:24Speaker 1: see all these champagne bubbles coming out. And we just
- 40:28Speaker 1: kept swimming out further and further. And Dominica is an
- 40:30Speaker 1: interesting place that the ocean just drops off into the abyss.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Yeah. It goes from beautiful coral and fish to total black.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Total blackness. And it's like this deep. beautiful kind of
- 40:46Speaker 1: turquoise blue water and then all of a sudden you
- 40:49Speaker 1: come to the edge and it's just dark, dark, dark,
- 40:52Speaker 1: dark blue. Do you remember that? Oh, vividly. So she
- 40:58Speaker 1: doesn't swim again and we're swimming out to the edge
- 41:00Speaker 1: of the abyss. Yes, we're snorkeling. And she's got her
- 41:04Speaker 1: floaty on. I've got a floaty on. We both had floaties.
- 41:07Speaker 1: So we didn't end up going to Puerto Rico or something.
- 41:10Speaker 1: We wanted to make sure we could get back to shore.
- 41:13Speaker 1: And as we As we're approaching that, I'm just thinking
- 41:17Speaker 1: about how you were looking for someone whose waters ran deep.
- 41:22Speaker 1: That was definitely deep. And I was helping you and
- 41:26Speaker 1: I was guiding you along. And it's kind of the
- 41:29Speaker 1: way that things have gone. And now over the last
- 41:35Speaker 1: few years, you've started stepping into your creativity. You've witnessed
- 41:38Speaker 1: what I've been doing. Not that I was doing it right,
- 41:41Speaker 1: because there was a lot of, fluctuations and ups and
- 41:45Speaker 1: downs through that whole process. But like you said, I
- 41:48Speaker 1: had moved into this place where, like the R.E.M. song,
- 41:52Speaker 1: I was letting go of my religion, all of the
- 41:55Speaker 1: dogmatic thinking, all of the stuff when we came together
- 41:58Speaker 1: and started moving into this very open place of creativity
- 42:04Speaker 1: through the photography and through the garden and music, as
- 42:08Speaker 1: you said, And I've just witnessed you coming along the
