- 0:00Chapter 11 from the book of Ezekiel.
- 0:04Dear Lord, first let's pray. Dear Lord, please be with us as
- 0:08we read through this chapter. Please open our eyes and give us
- 0:12wisdom to what you have to say to us.
- 0:15And please let us take what we hear and apply it to our lives
- 0:19in any way that we can. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:24It begins the. Then the Spirit lifted me up and
- 0:28brought me to the gate of the House of the Lord that faces E
- 0:33There at the entrance of the gate were 25 men, and I saw
- 0:37among them Jazanaya, son of Azur, and Pelletaya, son of
- 0:42Beninaya, leaders of the people. The Lord said to me, son of man,
- 0:48these are the men who are plotting evil and grieving
- 0:52wicked advice or giving wicked advice in the city.
- 0:56They say, haven't our houses been recently rebuilt?
- 1:00This city is a pot and we are the meat in it.
- 1:03Therefore, prophecy against them.
- 1:05Prophecy, Son of man. I'm going to pause here because
- 1:09this whole pot and meat thing needs to be explained and
- 1:13luckily the study Bible explains it.
- 1:15So it says, why did the leaders or what did the leaders mean by
- 1:20calling Jerusalem a pot and themselves meet?
- 1:24The wicked leaders, perhaps using a familiar proverb,
- 1:29suggested that they belonged in Jerusalem just as the meat
- 1:32belongs in a pot. They may have been urging people
- 1:36to make long term plans to live there, or they may have thought
- 1:40Jerusalem's buildings could offer protection from the
- 1:43Babylonians. Either way, their counsel was
- 1:46opposed to God's purposes and would bring even greater
- 1:50destruction. Few more questions and answers.
- 1:53Who was Jayaznia son of Azur? This was not the same Jayaz
- 1:59Anaya mentioned in chapter 8, verse 11.
- 2:03All that is known of these two men is that they wielded
- 2:07considerable power and LED the people to defy the Lord.
- 2:11They proclaimed peace and safety when God's message to the people
- 2:15was one of judgment and destruction.
- 2:18See, that's something else that we we'll hear about.
- 2:23Well, we have heard in the Bible that that's what is prophesied
- 2:28in the future, that there's going to be people saying that,
- 2:31oh, we're in peace and safety. But it says, you know, when
- 2:33there's, when they say peace and safety and prophecy, then comes
- 2:37sudden destruction, 'cause there's deceived people who are
- 2:41saying things that are not of God.
- 2:44So it's important to observe things and make sure that we
- 2:50align things with Scripture that are happening in the world right
- 2:52now. So why is Ezekiel called Son of
- 2:55Man? Used some 90 times in the book
- 2:58of Ezekiel, this label underscores Ezekiel's humanity
- 3:01and his dependence on God's supernatural power.
- 3:05It may have also. It may also have reminded
- 3:08Ezekiel that his job was to convey, not create the message.
- 3:16OK, continuing with verse 5. Then the Spirit of the Lord came
- 3:19on me and he told me to say this is what the Lord says.
- 3:24That is what you are saying, you leaders in Jerusalem.
- 3:27But I know what is going through your mind.
- 3:30You have killed many people in this city and filled its streets
- 3:34with the dead. Therefore, this is what the Lord
- 3:38says. The bodies you have thrown there
- 3:41are the meat, and this city is the pot, but I will drive you
- 3:46out of it. You fear the sword, and the
- 3:49sword is what I will bring against you, declares the Lord.
- 3:53I will drive you out of the city and deliver you into the hands
- 3:57of foreigners and inflict punishment on you.
- 4:00You will fall by the sword, and I will execute judgement on you
- 4:04at the borders of Israel. Then you will know that I am the
- 4:10Lord. This city will not be a pot for
- 4:13you, nor will you be the meat in it.
- 4:16I will execute judgement on you at the borders of Israel, and
- 4:21you will know that I am the Lord.
- 4:23For you have not followed my decrees or kept my laws, but
- 4:28have conformed to the standards of the nations around you.
- 4:33So God again is giving His reason.
- 4:36He, he wants to be known. And he's reminding them that you
- 4:41know, this is all happening because you have not followed my
- 4:43decrees or kept my laws and you conform to the standards of the
- 4:48nations around you. And so I thought it was
- 4:52interesting that in both of these, he repeated it twice that
- 4:56he was going to bring judgement on you at the borders of Israel.
- 5:00That just, I don't know what the significance of that is.
- 5:04But as soon as I read that, it just reminded me of what
- 5:07happened in Gaza on October 7th, 2023.
- 5:11I have no idea if that has any relation at all, but it it just
- 5:18brought that to mind when I read it, which is terrible.
- 5:21But so we in real life could imagine what was going on back
- 5:26then if the same thing happened. So verse 13 Now as I was
- 5:31prophesying, Pelletiah son of Beniah died.
- 5:36Then I fell face down and I cried out in a loud voice, At
- 5:40last, sovereign Lord, will you completely destroy the remnant
- 5:45of Israel? So God is bringing forth a
- 5:49significant judgment upon people.
- 5:54In the study Bible it says who killed whom in Jerusalem.
- 5:57This was a prediction of what would happen because of the
- 6:00corruption of Jerusalem's leaders.
- 6:03Though the leaders had executed many, King Manasseh filled
- 6:07Jerusalem with innocent blood. We read that in Second Kings
- 6:10chapter 24, verse 4. God would avenge the deaths of
- 6:14the innocent with the lives of the disobedient rulers.
- 6:18Second Kings 25, verses 18 through 21, what were the
- 6:24standards of the nations around them?
- 6:26Some of the things, the nations surrounding, some of the things
- 6:30the surrounding nations practiced were idolatry,
- 6:34exploitation of the poor, ritual sex, astrology, and human
- 6:40sacrifice, all as part of their worship.
- 6:45And that's found in Second Kings chapter 23, verses 4 through 10.
- 6:50So who was Pelletaya and why was Ezekiel so distressed over his
- 6:54death? Pelletaya means Yahweh has built
- 6:58up. We are not sure of his identity
- 7:01or why his death elicited such a strong reaction from Ezekiel.
- 7:05Pelletaya was most likely an elder of the city, and his fate
- 7:09may have been indicative of what was coming to many of the elders
- 7:13of the city. Ezekiel was horrified at the
- 7:16severity of the Lord's retribution.
- 7:19So going back to the book of Ezekiel, verse 14, the word of
- 7:24the Lord came to me, Son of man, the people of Jerusalem have
- 7:28said of your fellow exiles and all the other Israelites, they
- 7:33are far from me. Lord, this land was given to us
- 7:37as a possession. That's kind of interesting too,
- 7:40because Israel was saying, you know, you gave us this land.
- 7:44We still have this battle going on today about whose land is it?
- 7:48But here in the Bible, Ezekiel affirms that again, that this
- 7:51land is Israel's. The disputed land over in the
- 7:57Middle East is what we're referring to, or Jerusalem is.
- 8:00So verse 16 from Ezekiel Chapter 11 therefore say this is what
- 8:06the sovereign Lord says. Although I sent them far away
- 8:10among the nations and scattered them among the countries, yet
- 8:14for a little while I have been a sanctuary for them in the
- 8:18countries where they have gone. Therefore, this is what the
- 8:22Sovereign Lord says. I will gather you from the
- 8:25nations and bring you back from the countries where you have
- 8:29been scattered, and I will give you back the land of Israel
- 8:34again. Now I think this is actually a
- 8:38way future prophecy for them and a future prophecy for us because
- 8:43of the next things that it says. Verse 18.
- 8:47They will return to it and remove all its vile images and
- 8:51detestable idols. I will give them an undivided
- 8:56heart and put a new spirit in them.
- 9:00I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a
- 9:03heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees
- 9:08and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people and I
- 9:13will be their God. But As for those whose hearts
- 9:16are devoted to their vile images and detestable idols, I will
- 9:20bring down on their own heads what they have done, declares
- 9:24the Sovereign Lord. Then the cherubim with the
- 9:28wheels besides them spread their wings, and the glory of the God
- 9:32of Israel was above them. The glory of the Lord went up
- 9:36from the city and stopped above the mountain east of it.
- 9:42The Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the Exiles in
- 9:45Babylonia in the vision given by the Spirit of God.
- 9:49Then the vision I had seen went up from me, and I told the
- 9:54Exiles everything the Lord had shown me.
- 9:58That's the end of Chapter 11, so I will read the remaining
- 10:03explanations that are given in the study Bible.
- 10:08So who were those far away from the Lord?
- 10:12Those in Jerusalem who initially escaped exile and death thought
- 10:17that they were more favored by God than those who have been
- 10:20carried off to for faraway lands because they still had the
- 10:24temple. But the Lord promised to be a
- 10:27sanctuary for those exiled in foreign countries.
- 10:31And I also remember, if you remember too, that he said
- 10:34anybody who stayed in Jerusalem was actually going to die by
- 10:37sword. And that was prophesied, I
- 10:40believe, by Jeremiah. How was the Lord a sanctuary?
- 10:45This is a critical verse here for understanding the book of
- 10:48Ezekiel. Before the time of the exile,
- 10:50God's people associated Jerusalem and the temple with
- 10:54God's presence among them. Now God revealed to his people
- 10:58that He Himself could be their sanctuary.
- 11:01God cannot be confined geographically.
- 11:05God would be with them in their exile, even in Pagan Babylon.
- 11:10Later Jesus came to replace the temple, referring to John
- 11:16chapter 2 verses 19 through 21. I thought this that response
- 11:20question and answer was interesting because as I put
- 11:25forth before, it seems like God actually gives certain
- 11:30territories to certain potentially spiritual beings
- 11:35just because these certain lands that from way back continue to
- 11:41be at odds with Israel. If you look, you know, like
- 11:46Elam, Iran is against Israel, Egypt is backed and back and
- 11:51forth with Israel and you look at, you know, Turkey is not a
- 11:56friend of Israel. You know, if you talk about
- 11:58Assyria, so and then Syria too is another one.
- 12:02So there's lots of different similarities.
- 12:05And even the land of Gaza, that's where the Philistines
- 12:07were and the Philistines were the, the giants, I guess the
- 12:11Nephilim offspring that lived there that Israel was at war
- 12:16with. So there's there's quite a bit
- 12:20of history repeating itself. And so On the contrary, all
- 12:27these other entities that these people in these areas worshipped
- 12:30other beings. God is omnipresent, He is
- 12:35everywhere. You can't hide from him.
- 12:38You can't go to a different territory and get away from Him,
- 12:41not that you'd want to, but if you are, if he was pursuing you,
- 12:45you can't get away from Him. And, and he's everywhere.
- 12:48So even if you are not in Jerusalem with the temple, you
- 12:53know the land that God claims as his and says that he will.
- 12:57You know Jesus will reign from Jerusalem if if someone isn't in
- 13:03Jerusalem, that doesn't mean that God is not present.
- 13:06He is omnipresent everywhere and no matter where we are, we will
- 13:09feel the presence of God and that is is significant.
- 13:15The the part where, well, OK, I'm going to read a little bit
- 13:20more. How would the returning exiles
- 13:22do away with idolatry, which had been practiced for centuries?
- 13:26When the Jews began to return to Jerusalem in 538 BC, the people
- 13:31living in Jerusalem were still practicing false religions.
- 13:35Although it took more than 100 years after their return to
- 13:39correct the abuses and promote true worship and obedience to
- 13:44God's law, the tide was turned. By the time of Christ, the Jews
- 13:49no longer were involved with idol worship.
- 13:52So that's interesting because I kind of still see idol worship
- 14:00happening and like the Bible, like the ancient deities that
- 14:07were worshipped back then, I see their replicas at concerts and
- 14:13other things around the world. And so whether it's, you know,
- 14:19it's not necessarily a temple that's been set up, but then
- 14:23when you look at every religion that has another entity besides
- 14:29the one true God, those are all false religions and those are
- 14:33all still being practiced today. So I don't, I don't know that I
- 14:38agree necessarily with what the study Bible says.
- 14:41I think there still is idolatry out there.
- 14:44And and then I don't know, like certainly God is giving his Holy
- 14:48Spirit to people. There's no question about it.
- 14:50But you know, it says I will give them an undivided heart and
- 14:54put a new spirit in them. Yes, but if if that has
- 15:00happened, that hasn't happened yet for everyone because people
- 15:06don't believe in Jesus and I don't believe Jesus is the Son
- 15:10of God and it's the Spirit that testifies that he is the Son of
- 15:15God. So if they are not testifying
- 15:17that Jesus is the Son of God, that means they don't have the
- 15:19Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit is received
- 15:22when we believe in Jesus and Jesus knows that with sincerity
- 15:26that we believe in what he did for us and we've repented.
- 15:32So when that come when that happens, we have the Holy
- 15:35Spirit. But I think there's could be a
- 15:38lot of people who maybe think they have a spirit, but maybe
- 15:41they don't. When you start looking at what
- 15:45the Bible tells us is a result of someone having the spirit,
- 15:49it, it produces actions in a person.
- 15:52It's not just a feeling or an experience that somebody gets
- 15:55one time and they said, Oh yeah, I got it.
- 15:57And you know, and then they live life contrary to what Jesus
- 16:01taught. It's once you know, you see that
- 16:05people are changing and living more and more like Jesus, then
- 16:08you can see, well, they probably have the Holy Spirit in them,
- 16:14But and that's discernment, not judgment.
- 16:16So I think we need to be careful about saying, Oh, you can't, you
- 16:20know, do that. I mean, I think you're foolish
- 16:24if you don't try to discern if someone has the Holy Spirit or
- 16:27if they don't, because if they have the Holy Spirit, then you
- 16:37should be able to expect better things from them.
- 16:40Then if they don't have the Spirit, then they need to learn
- 16:45more about God, about Jesus, and so that they can receive the
- 16:52Holy Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit, as
- 16:54Jesus said was, is so important for somebody to get into the
- 16:58Kingdom of God because he said that no one can see the, no one
- 17:03can enter the Kingdom of God unless they're born again, born
- 17:06of the water and born of the Spirit.
- 17:08So that is something that we all need if we want to be in God's
- 17:13Kingdom. So then it says what is a heart
- 17:17of stone? What is a heart of flesh?
- 17:20These terms are recurring theme in Ezekiel and Jeremiah.
- 17:25They describe the radical spiritual change that leads to
- 17:30genuine obedience. See that?
- 17:33Obedience of God's laws. So if somebody's calling
- 17:36themselves a Christian, but they're deliberately disobeying
- 17:39God, you kind of have to wonder, is the Holy Spirit functioning
- 17:46in their life? Have they surrendered to God?
- 17:49Have they made God Lord of their life, or are they still battling
- 17:54with God? So as the Exiles repeated, that
- 18:02means turning your mindset away from those things and took steps
- 18:07to demonstrate their repentance. That's the other thing, taking
- 18:10steps forward in a new life, such as removing idol worship.
- 18:17God gave them hearts of flesh, tender hearts that were open to
- 18:21him. And that's what the Holy Spirit
- 18:23does. The Holy Spirit does soften our
- 18:25hearts to God because initially when we see like the the wrath
- 18:29of God, you know, it offends most people and and people
- 18:33don't. They only want to think about
- 18:35the loving God, but in all honesty, the wrath is a result
- 18:41of his love because he cannot let evil continue.
- 18:44So he has to do something about that.
- 18:46And until we, our eyes are open to that, perhaps because the
- 18:53Holy Spirit helps us to understand that that really
- 18:57makes sense, then we're we're thinking that it was like, you
- 19:03know, people are concerned about God being that way, but that is
- 19:10how God is. So I have one more thing that I
- 19:13wanted to talk about or read from in Exploring Ezekiel.
- 19:18It's from the book of Amir Sarfati and it's called
- 19:23Exploring Ezekiel. You can get it on Amazon.
- 19:26It's a really good, easy read book that kind of talks about
- 19:30some of these things, But there's a few things in here
- 19:33that he said that I I thought was very interesting.
- 19:39So he talked about OK, the phrase little sanctuary in verse
- 19:5016 is a translation of the Hebrew phrase mikdashmiat.
- 19:56The word mikdash means temple. So a mikdashmiat is a little
- 20:01temple. God told the Israelites that no
- 20:04matter where his people went, he would dwell in the holy places
- 20:09they created for him. It is from this specific
- 20:12prophecy that the entire concept of synagogues arose.
- 20:17Synagogue is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bek
- 20:22Knesset, which. Both of which mean House of
- 20:27gathering or place of gathering. So I didn't know that about
- 20:31synagogues. And I think that's interesting
- 20:34there. And then I want to read kind of
- 20:38the very end of Amir's book because just the things he says
- 20:43are so good to remind ourselves of here.
- 20:49So he says on page 68 of Exploring Ezekiel.
- 20:55The third and final element of this promise jumps ahead to a
- 20:59future time when God will gather his chosen people to prepare
- 21:04them for Yeshua's millennial reign quote.
- 21:08Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit
- 21:12within them, and take the Stony flesh out of their, the Stony
- 21:17heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, that
- 21:21they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them,
- 21:26and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
- 21:30Verses 19 through 20. What a wonderful promise.
- 21:34The day is coming when the entire Jewish people will be
- 21:38right with God, loving Him and serving Him as was intended from
- 21:43the day the promise was given to Abraham.
- 21:48But Amir, why are you saying this is in the future?
- 21:51Isn't this exactly what God did when he brought the Exiles back
- 21:54to Jerusalem? Unfortunately, no.
- 21:57Otherwise there would have not been a need for Zechariah to
- 22:01tell the returnees to get their acts together and a Haggai to
- 22:05push them to get off their backsides and get the temple
- 22:09built. And when you read Nehemiah and
- 22:14especially Ezra, it's very clear that there are a people who are
- 22:20much better. There are a people who are much
- 22:25better than they used to be. However, they are far from being
- 22:28what they will one day become. Ezekiel himself points to a
- 22:33distant future nature of his promise later in chapter 36 of
- 22:38his book, as we'll see in more detail when we get there, one
- 22:42more regathering of God's people will take place in the land of
- 22:46Israel. It is then that the spiritual
- 22:50transformation will take place and God will be able to say that
- 22:54both in name and in relationship.
- 22:57Quote, They shall be my people, and I will be their God.
- 23:01Verse 20 With these final prophecies stated, it was time
- 23:05for the glory of God to let the hand of His people slip from His
- 23:10own, so that he could turn his back and leave and quote.
- 23:14This is quote, and the glory of the Lord went up from the midst
- 23:18of the city, and stood on the mountain which is on the east
- 23:22side of the city. Verse 23.
- 23:24One last look from the Mount of Olives and the glory was gone.
- 23:30The vision ended. Ezekiel found himself back with
- 23:33the other exiles, and he told them of the long, strange
- 23:36adventure he had experienced. It's a tragic story, but let me
- 23:41add a happy coda to the sad Symphony of separation.
- 23:45When the glory of the Lord lifted from the Ark of the
- 23:48Covenant set between the cherubim, it rose above the
- 23:51temple, then travelled to the Eastgate.
- 23:54After pausing, the glory moved to the Mount of Olives, from
- 23:58which it then rose to heaven. For some of you, that location
- 24:02may already have you. Your prophecy censors pinging.
- 24:06God wasn't done with the people of Israel.
- 24:08He still had a plan for them. He had taken His glory from
- 24:12them, but He would bring it back twice.
- 24:15A little more than 600 years later, a man sat on the donkey
- 24:19as the animal cantered down that same Mount of Olives.
- 24:23The writer who was astride the animal was more than just a man.
- 24:27He was the God Man, Jesus the Messiah in his human body.
- 24:33In his human body resided the full glory of the Lord as Jesus
- 24:38rode toward Jerusalem and the people called out to him.
- 24:41Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the
- 24:44name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, Matthew
- 24:4821, verse 9. As they directed their praises
- 24:51to heaven, they didn't realize that the recipient of the worst
- 24:55of their worship was right in front of them.
- 24:58When the Lord reached Jerusalem, he went straight to the temple.
- 25:02Once there, he angrily turned over the tables of those who
- 25:06were profiting off the worship of God.
- 25:09Crying, It is written, My house shall be called a House of
- 25:12prayer, but you have made it into a den of thieves.
- 25:16Verse 13. The glory of the Lord had
- 25:18returned to the temple and sadly found it in found it still in a
- 25:24state of spiritual disarray. Rather than being awash with
- 25:29idolatry and adultery, it was drowning in profiteering and
- 25:33religiosity. His time at the place dedicated
- 25:37to his name was short. Soon he was back on the Mount of
- 25:40Olives, from which he once again left, taking his glory with him.
- 25:45From Acts verse 1, chapter 1, verses 6 through 12.
- 25:50The first return was not intended to be a permanent
- 25:53residency. It was merely A visitation.
- 25:57A day is coming when he will be back to stay, when the glory of
- 26:01the Lord returns once again in the person of the resurrected
- 26:04Christ. To where will it come?
- 26:07The same location that it left, then came back to, then left
- 26:11again the Mount of Olives. Quote.
- 26:15In that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which
- 26:19faces Jerusalem on the east and on the mountain.
- 26:22The and and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east
- 26:29to West, making a very large valley.
- 26:32Half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it
