- 0:00In 2 Corinthians chapter 3, verse 13, it is written,
- 0:04we are not like Moses who put a veil over his face so
- 0:09the people of Israel would not see the glory fading away.
- 0:12But the people's minds were hardened, and even
- 0:16to this very day, whenever the Old Covenant is being read,
- 0:21a veil covers their minds so they cannot understand
- 0:25the truth. And this veil can be
- 0:28removed only by believing in Christ.
- 0:33I have a question for you. Is it possible that
- 0:37you are under a veil? Is there a veil that is obscuring
- 0:42your view and your vision, your understanding and
- 0:45discernment of the Scriptures? Ask the Lord
- 0:49to reveal if there is a veil. And Jesus will
- 0:54remove it. Only he can.
- 0:56Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is
- 1:00August 29th. Now let's continue our journey reading through
- 1:03the entire Bible in one year. This week we are reading from the
- 1:08New Living Translation for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 1:14Deuteronomy 16:1-17.
- 1:20In honor of the Lord your God, celebrate the Passover each year in
- 1:23the early spring, in the month of Aviv, for that was
- 1:27the month in which the Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night.
- 1:32Your Passover sacrifice may be from either the flock or the herd,
- 1:36and it must be sacrificed to the Lord your God at the designated place of
- 1:40worship, the place he chooses for his name to be
- 1:43honored. Eat it with bread made without yeast,
- 1:47For 7 days the bread you eat must be made without yeast,
- 1:50as when you escaped from Egypt in such a hurry.
- 1:54Eat this bread, the bread of suffering, so that as long as
- 1:58you live you will remember the day you departed from Egypt.
- 2:02Let no yeast be found in any house throughout your land for those
- 2:067 days. And when you sacrifice the Passover lamb on the evening
- 2:10of the first day, do not let any of the meat remain until the
- 2:14next morning. You may not sacrifice the Passover in just
- 2:18any of the towns that the Lord your God is giving you.
- 2:21You must offer it only at the designated place of worship,
- 2:25the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored.
- 2:29Sacrifice it there in the evening as the sun goes down on the anniversary
- 2:34of your exodus from Egypt.
- 2:38Roast the lamb and eat it in the place the Lord your God chooses.
- 2:42Then you may go back to your tents the next morning.
- 2:46For the next 6 days you may not eat any bread made with yeast.
- 2:50On the 7th day proclaim another holy day in honor of the
- 2:54Lord your God, and no work may be done on that day.
- 2:58Count off 7 weeks from when you first begin to cut
- 3:02the grain at the time of harvest. Then celebrate
- 3:06the Festival of Harvest to honor the Lord your God. Bring him a
- 3:10voluntary offering in proportion to the blessings you have received
- 3:14from him. This is a time to celebrate before the Lord your God
- 3:18at the designated place of worship he will choose for his name to be
- 3:21honored. Celebrate with your sons and daughters,
- 3:25your male and female servants, the Levites from your
- 3:28towns, and the foreigners, orphans, and widows who live among you.
- 3:33Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, so be
- 3:36careful to obey all these decrees.
- 3:41You must observe the Festival of Sukkot for 7 days at the end of the
- 3:44harvest season. After the grain has been
- 3:47threshed and the grapes have been pressed. This festival will
- 3:51be a happy time of celebrating with your sons and daughters, your male
- 3:55and female servants, and the Levites, foreigners, orphans,
- 3:58and widows from your towns. For 7 days you must celebrate
- 4:03this festival to honor the Lord your God at the place he chooses,
- 4:06for it is he who blesses you with bountiful harvests and
- 4:10gives you success in all your work.
- 4:14This festival will be a time of great joy for all.
- 4:17Each year, every man in Israel must celebrate these 3
- 4:21festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread,
- 4:25the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Sukkot.
- 4:30On each of these occasions, all men must appear before the Lord
- 4:34your God at the place he chooses, but they must not appear before
- 4:38the Lord without a gift for him. All must give as
- 4:41they are able according to the blessings given to them by the Lord
- 4:45your God.
- 4:49Job 31:1-33:33.
- 4:58I, Job, made a covenant with my eyes not to look
- 5:01with lust upon a young woman. What has God above chosen for
- 5:05us? What is our inheritance from the Almighty on high? It is calamity
- 5:09for the wicked misfortune for those who do evil.
- 5:13He sees everything I do and every step I take. Have I lied to
- 5:17anyone or deceived anyone? Let God judge
- 5:21me on the scales of justice, for He knows my integrity.
- 5:24If I have strayed from His pathway, or if my heart has lusted for
- 5:29what my eyes have seen, or if I am guilty
- 5:32of any other sin, then let someone else harvest the
- 5:36crops I have planted. And let all that I have planted be uprooted.
- 5:40If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I
- 5:44have lusted for my neighbor's wife, then may my wife belong to
- 5:49another man. May other men sleep with her. For lust is
- 5:53a shameful sin, a crime that should be punished.
- 5:56It is a devastating fire that destroys to hell. It would
- 6:00wipe out everything I own. If I have been unfair to my
- 6:04male or female servants, if I have refused to hear their
- 6:08complaints, How could I face God? What could I say when
- 6:12He questioned me about it? For God created me,
- 6:16both me and my servants. He created us both.
- 6:20Have I refused to help the poor or crushed the
- 6:23hopes of widows who looked to me for help? Have I
- 6:27been stingy with my food and refused to share it with hungry orphans?
- 6:31No! From childhood I have cared for orphans,
- 6:34and all my life I have cared for widows. Whenever I saw
- 6:38someone who was homeless and without clothes,
- 6:41did they not praise me for providing wool clothing to keep them warm?
- 6:45If my arm has abused an orphan because
- 6:49I thought I could get away with it, then let my shoulder be wrenched out
- 6:53of place, let my arm be torn from its socket. That would
- 6:57be better than facing the judgment sent by God.
- 7:00For if the majesty of God opposes me, What hope is there?
- 7:05Have I not put my trust in money or felt secure because of
- 7:08my gold? Does my happiness depend on my wealth and
- 7:12all that I own? Have I looked at the sun shining in the skies
- 7:16or the moon walking down its silver pathway and been secretly
- 7:20enticed in my heart to worship them? If so, I should
- 7:24be punished by the judges, for it would mean I had denied the God of
- 7:28heaven. Have I ever rejoiced when my enemies
- 7:32came to ruin, or become excited when harm came their
- 7:36way? No, I have never cursed anyone or
- 7:39asked for revenge. My servants have never let others go hungry.
- 7:44I have never turned away a stranger, but have opened my doors to
- 7:48everyone. Have I tried to hide my sins as people normally
- 7:52do, hiding my guilt in a closet? Have I feared the
- 7:56crowd and its contempt so that I refused to acknowledge my
- 8:00sin and would not go outside? If only I
- 8:03had someone who would listen to me and try to see my side.
- 8:07Look, I will sign my name to my defense.
- 8:11Let the Almighty show me that I am wrong. Let my accuser
- 8:15write out the charges against me. I would face the accusation
- 8:19proudly. I would treasure it like a crown. For I would
- 8:23tell him exactly what I have done. I would come before him like
- 8:27a prince. If my land accuses me and all its furrows
- 8:30weep together, or if I have stolen its crops or murdered its owners,
- 8:35then let thistles grow on that land instead of wheat and weeds instead
- 8:40of barley. Job's words are ended.
- 8:45Job's 3 friends refused to reply further to him because
- 8:49he kept insisting on his innocence. Then Elihu
- 8:54son of Barakel the Benzite of the clan of Ram became
- 8:58angry. He was angry because Job refused to
- 9:01admit that he had sinned and that God was right
- 9:06in punishing him. He was also angry with Job's 3 friends because
- 9:10they had condemned God by their inability to answer Job's
- 9:13arguments. Elihu had waited for the others to speak
- 9:18because they were older than he. But when he saw that they had
- 9:22no further reply, he spoke out angrily.
- 9:25Elihu son of Barakel the Busite said,
- 9:28I am young and you are old, so I held back and did not dare
- 9:32to tell you what I think. I thought those who are older should speak,
- 9:36for wisdom comes with age.
- 9:39Surely it is God's Spirit within people, the breath
- 9:43of the Almighty within them, that makes them intelligent.
- 9:47But sometimes the elders are not wise; sometimes the aged
- 9:51do not understand justice. So listen to me and let
- 9:55me express my opinion. I have waited all this time,
- 9:59listening very carefully to your arguments, listening to you grope
- 10:03for words. I have listened, but not one of you has refuted
- 10:07Job or answered his arguments. And don't tell me he is too wise for
- 10:12us. Only God can convince him. If Job had been arguing
- 10:16with me, I would not answer with that kind of logic.
- 10:20You sit there baffled with no further response. Should I
- 10:24continue to wait now that you are silent? Must I remain
- 10:28silent? No, I will say my piece.
- 10:32I will speak my mind. I surely will, for I am pent up
- 10:36and full of words, and the spirit within me urges me on. I I am
- 10:40like a wine cask without a vent. My words are ready
- 10:43to burst out. I must speak to find relief. So let
- 10:48me give my answers. I won't play favorites or try to flatter anyone.
- 10:52And if I tried, my Creator would soon do away with me.
- 10:57Listen, Job, to what I have to say. Now that I have begun
- 11:00to speak, let me continue. I speak with all sincerity.
- 11:04I speak the truth. For the Spirit of God has made me,
- 11:08and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Answer me if
- 11:12you can. Make your case and take your stand. Look,
- 11:15you and I are the same before God. I too was formed
- 11:20from clay, so you don't need to be afraid of me.
- 11:24I am not some great person to make you nervous and afraid.
- 11:28You have said it in my hearing. I have heard your very words.
- 11:32You said, I am pure. I am innocent. I have not sinned.
- 11:36God is picking a quarrel with me and He considers me to be His enemy.
- 11:40He puts my feet in the stocks and watches every move
- 11:44I make. In this you are not right, and I will show you why.
- 11:48As you yourself have said, God is greater than any person.
- 11:52So why are you bringing a charge against Him? You say,
- 11:56He does not respond to people's complaints. But God speaks again
- 12:00and again. Though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams,
- 12:05in visions in the night when deep sleep falls on people
- 12:08as they lie in bed. He whispers in their ear and terrifies
- 12:12them with his warning. He causes them to change
- 12:15their minds. He keeps them from pride. He keeps them
- 12:19from the grave, from crossing over the river of death. Or God
- 12:23disciplines people with sickness and pain. With ceaseless
- 12:27aching in their bones. They lose their appetite and do
- 12:31not care for even the most delicious food. They waste away to
- 12:35skin and bones. They are at death's door. The angels of death
- 12:38wait for them. But if a special messenger
- 12:42from heaven is there to intercede for a person, to declare that
- 12:47he is upright, God will be gracious and say, set him free.
- 12:51Do not make him die, for I have found a ransom for his life.
- 12:54Then his body will become as healthy as a child's, firm and youthful
- 12:59again. When he prays to God, he will be accepted, and God
- 13:02will receive him with joy and restore him to good standing.
- 13:06He will declare to his friends, I sinned, but it
- 13:10was not worth it. God rescued me from the grave, and now
- 13:13my life is filled with light. Yes,
- 13:17God often does these things for people. He rescues
- 13:21them from the grave so they may live in the light. Of the living.
- 13:24Mark this well, Job. Listen to me and let me say more.
- 13:28But if you have anything to say, go ahead. I want to hear it,
- 13:32for I am anxious to see you justified. But if not,
- 13:35then listen to me. Keep silent and I will teach you
- 13:39wisdom.
- 13:442 Corinthians 3:1-18.
- 13:49Are we Paul and his coworkers beginning again to
- 13:53tell you how good we are. Some people need to bring letters
- 13:56of recommendation with them or ask you to write letters of recommendation for
- 14:00them. But the only letter of recommendation we need
- 14:04is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter
- 14:07written in our hearts, and everyone can read it and recognize our
- 14:11good work among you. Clearly, you are a
- 14:14letter from Christ prepared by us. It is written
- 14:18not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God.
- 14:22It is carved not on stone, but on human hearts.
- 14:26We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through
- 14:30Christ. It is not that we think we can do anything of lasting
- 14:34value by ourselves. Our only power and success come
- 14:38from God. He is the one who has enabled us to represent His
- 14:42new covenant. This is a covenant not of
- 14:45written laws, but of the Spirit. The old
- 14:50way ends in death. In the new way, the Holy
- 14:54Spirit gives life. That old system
- 14:58of law etched in stone led to death.
- 15:02Yet it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not
- 15:06bear to look at Moses' face. His face shone
- 15:10with the glory of God, even though the brightness was
- 15:13already fading away Shouldn't we expect far greater
- 15:18glory when the Holy Spirit is giving life?
- 15:22If the Old Covenant, which brings condemnation,
- 15:25was glorious, how much more glorious is the New Covenant,
- 15:29which makes us right with God!
- 15:33In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared
- 15:37with the overwhelming glory of the New Covenant.
- 15:42So if the Old Covenant, which has been set aside,
- 15:46was full of glory, then the new covenant,
- 15:51which remains forever, has far greater glory.
- 15:56Since this new covenant gives us such confidence,
- 16:00we can be very bold. We are not like Moses, who put a
- 16:04veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the
- 16:08glory fading away. But the people's minds were hardened,
- 16:12And even to this day, whenever the Old Covenant is being read,
- 16:16a veil covers their minds so they cannot understand
- 16:21the truth. And this veil can be
- 16:24removed only by believing in Christ.
- 16:30Yes, even today when they read Moses's writings,
- 16:34their hearts are covered with that veil and they do not understand.
- 16:40But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, then the
- 16:44veil is taken away. Now the Lord is
- 16:48the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, He gives
- 16:52freedom. And all of us have had
- 16:55that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that
- 16:59brightly reflect the glory of the Lord.
- 17:03And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more
- 17:06like Him and reflect His glory even Psalm
- 17:1343:1-5. O God,
- 17:17take up my cause; defend me against these ungodly people.
- 17:22Rescue me from these unjust liars, for You are
- 17:26God, my only safe haven. Why have You tossed me aside?
- 17:30Why must I wander around in darkness, oppressed by my
- 17:33enemies? Send out Your light and Your truth, Let them
- 17:37guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain,
- 17:41to the place where you live. There I will go to the
- 17:44altar of God, to God, the source of all my joy.
- 17:48I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God. Why am
- 17:52I so discouraged? Why so sad? I will put my hope
- 17:56in the Lord. I will praise him again, my Savior and
- 18:01my God. Proverbs 22:8-9.
- 18:09Those who plant seeds of injustice will harvest disaster, and their
- 18:13reign of terror will end. Blessed are those who are generous
- 18:17because they feed the poor. I want
- 18:21to speak to you today from our reading from 2 Corinthians chapter 3,
- 18:25and this is a really important and foundational
- 18:30chapter, and there's a really wonderful truth
- 18:34that I want to unpack with you here. And so in this chapter,
- 18:38Paul is talking about the Old Covenant
- 18:42and the New Covenant. He's comparing and
- 18:46contrasting these 2 things, and he goes on to say in verse 6,
- 18:50He is the one who has enabled us to represent
- 18:55His New Covenant— that is, Jesus. This New Covenant— this
- 18:59is a covenant not of written laws but
- 19:03of the Spirit. The old way ends
- 19:06in death, and in the new way the Holy Spirit gives
- 19:11life. So what was the old way?
- 19:14The old way was the first covenant that was given at
- 19:18Mount Sinai by God to Moses and
- 19:21then communicated to the people. It was the Torah.
- 19:26It was the law. It was the Ten Commandments, and it
- 19:30was a covenant, an invitation to the people to be in a covenant
- 19:34relationship with the God of Israel, the King of
- 19:38Kings, by obeying his covenant.
- 19:42But the people failed. They failed immediately
- 19:47while Moses was up at Mount Sinai. They made a golden
- 19:50calf and called that golden calf Yahweh.
- 19:54They immediately fell into idolatry and worship of
- 19:57false gods. They were not able to keep
- 20:01this Old Covenant. Paul goes on to say
- 20:04in verse 7, that old system of law etched in stone led
- 20:08to death, yet it began with such glory that the
- 20:12people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses's face. His face
- 20:16shone with radiance because he had been in the presence
- 20:20of God. But the people couldn't stand looking at his face, so he covered his
- 20:24face with a veil.
- 20:27So if the Old Covenant, which has been set aside, was full of glory,
- 20:31then the New Covenant, which remains forever, has far greater
- 20:36glory. Now here's the real bottom
- 20:40line. The linchpin, the conclusion of the matter.
- 20:44Verse 14: But the people's minds were hardened,
- 20:49and even to this day, whenever the Old Covenant is
- 20:52being read, a veil covers their minds so they
- 20:56cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed
- 21:00only by believing in Christ.
- 21:05Yes, even today When they read Moses's writings,
- 21:09their hearts are covered with that veil and they do not
- 21:13understand. So here's my
- 21:17warning. I want to give a strong warning here.
- 21:22There's a real danger in the Hebrew Roots movement
- 21:27to come back into that veil,
- 21:30to spend all your time in the Old Testament,
- 21:34in the Tanakh and
- 21:38getting into the food laws, following the feasts of the
- 21:42Lord, doing all the Old Testament practices and
- 21:47trying to follow the letter of the law. Basically, you are
- 21:51going back to Mount Sinai and you are trying to put yourself under Moses,
- 21:55and that is putting yourself under the letter of the law.
- 21:59The Old Covenant or the First Covenant leads
- 22:03to death. It does not lead to life.
- 22:07It leads to legalism. It leads to Phariseeism.
- 22:13It leads to the pointing of the finger.
- 22:16It leads to an arrogance and a pride. And Jesus
- 22:21wants us to be in the New Covenant, the Second Covenant,
- 22:26where we follow the Spirit of the Law.
- 22:30Where we are filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 22:36And the only— if there's a veil over a person's mind,
- 22:40whether you're talking to a Jewish Orthodox person or you're talking
- 22:43to somebody in the Hebrew Roots world that does the Sabbath
- 22:48and does the feasts and doesn't eat pork or shellfish and follows
- 22:52all the Old Testament laws to the best of their ability, and of course it's
- 22:55impossible to follow all of the laws because there isn't a temple.
- 23:00There's no more— there's no temple, so they can't even do much
- 23:05of what the Old Testament talks about regarding temple
- 23:09worship and temple practice and temple sacrifices.
- 23:13This veil can only be removed by believing in
- 23:17Christ, and then the veil comes off.
- 23:21And so my warning is, if you're involved
- 23:26yourself in the Hebrew Roots Movement, Be careful.
- 23:30I know a lot of well-intentioned people. I am good friends with many people
- 23:35in the Hebrew Roots world, and they begin with an innocence
- 23:39and a joy and a purity and a love for the Feasts and a love
- 23:42for the Sabbath. But if you stay in it for very long,
- 23:47a veil can come over a person's mind and heart,
- 23:51and they are back under the Law. Of Moses,
- 23:55and they're trying to follow the letter of the law.
- 23:58And when they get into all kinds of controversies and conflicts
- 24:02about what calendar to follow— the dark moon, the sliver moon, the Zadok
- 24:06calendar— they get into all of these controversies about
- 24:10what is the purest, what is the most correct.
- 24:14That's the letter of the law. That's not the spirit of the law.
- 24:18That's going under Moses. And not
- 24:23under the Holy Spirit, that not under Jesus.
- 24:28And so I'm— my concern is that
- 24:31many in the Hebrew Roots world have lost their
- 24:34way. Many of the leaders have lost their way.
- 24:39They've disconnected from Jesus Christ.
- 24:43They've disconnected from the Holy Spirit. And instead
- 24:46they are following Moses.
- 24:50Paul warns about this also in Galatians.
- 24:54He says, you started by walking in grace,
- 24:58walking in faith. You began your walk by walking in faith,
- 25:02and I am afraid now you want to go back to following the law?
- 25:07You have fallen from grace. So what is this New
- 25:11Covenant? It is spoken of in Jeremiah chapter 31, verse 31,
- 25:16where it is written: Behold, the days are coming, says the
- 25:19LORD, when I will make a New Covenant with
- 25:25the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not according to
- 25:28the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them
- 25:31by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt,
- 25:34My covenant which they broke. Though I was
- 25:38a husband to them, says the LORD. So there He is referring back
- 25:41to that first covenant that was made at Mount Sinai when
- 25:45they left Egypt, the Ten Commandments, and it was
- 25:49a marriage covenant, but they broke it. He is
- 25:53referring back to that first covenant. Verse 33:
- 25:57But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
- 26:02after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in
- 26:06their minds and write it on their hearts,
- 26:09and I will be their God and they shall be my people.
- 26:13And how does that happen? It happens when we are born again
- 26:17and we repent of our sins, and God takes the heart of stone
- 26:21out of us and gives us a heart of flesh. And with that
- 26:25heart of flesh, then He's able to write the Word of God upon

- 26:40So my question for you to ponder and think on and reflect
- 26:44on and pray about is, are you under a veil?
- 26:49Are you wearing a veil? Is there a veil that is obscuring your
- 26:53vision and your understanding of the Word of God?
- 26:57Only Jesus can remove that veil.
- 27:02Ask Him. Ask Him,
- 27:05Jesus, am I under a veil? Is there a veil covering
- 27:09my mind that I'm not discerning and understanding the Word
- 27:13of God? And only Jesus can remove
- 27:18that veil. Have a blessed day, and we'll
- 27:22see you tomorrow. Shalom.
