- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I am really looking forward to
- 0:18this episode today. This is an ask anything episode
- 0:22and going to be looking at one particular question today and
- 0:25that is the topic and person of Satan.
- 0:29And so I'm really, really looking forward to this study.
- 0:33This is something that I'm really passionate about
- 0:36something that I enjoy and you might go wait, why did why did
- 0:39Brian enjoy Satan? Well, it's not Satan himself
- 0:43that I have a particular thought on.
- 0:45Rather, it is what Satan is do what's coming to him and the
- 0:52fact that our God is just and he is good.
- 0:56And so I am excited for evil to be finally conquered and
- 1:01eradicated in our world. And so we're going to look today
- 1:07at the topic of Satan. And the particular question that
- 1:10had come in was that I had mentioned before that Satan is
- 1:14not currently in hell. And so the person wanted to know
- 1:17a little bit more about that. I'm going to give the the quick
- 1:20and easy answer right away, and it's because the Scripture never
- 1:24tells us that he is in hell. And actually, it doesn't mention
- 1:28that Satan will be in hell until after Jesus has returned.
- 1:34And in the final condemnation of evil, he will throw Satan into
- 1:41the lake of fire. So that's that's what Scripture
- 1:45says. I'm going to give you a little
- 1:46bit more back story though, 'cause that'd be a tremendously
- 1:50short Tabernacle talk. And so I'm going to tell you who
- 1:52Satan is, who he is, not what his purpose or what his identity
- 1:58is, who God created him to be, and then how we are called to,
- 2:04if you will interact with him or not interact with him, what we
- 2:07should be wary of as regards Satan.
- 2:11And so I believe this time we'll be edifying.
- 2:15I know in my heart, even as I was preparing some notes for
- 2:19this, I went, God, thank you that you are the one who is
- 2:23victorious, that Satan is nothing compared to you, and
- 2:27thank you that you give us victory through Christ Jesus.
- 2:31So going to start off first with this.
- 2:34Satan was created by God. Satan is not a rival to God.
- 2:40Satan is not a brother or Co created being with Jesus as many
- 2:49cults today have said, the Son and Father and Spirit they are
- 2:54one. There is one God who together is
- 2:59uncreated who is the cause of everything in existence.
- 3:04There is no creation of the Son or creation of the Spirit, but
- 3:09instead our one triune God has existed, did throughout all of
- 3:15eternity past and will exist to all eternity future.
- 3:19Satan is created and even as we look at perhaps the timeline of
- 3:24when did Satan come into existence, Genesis chapter 1
- 3:29would give us the indication through the creation of the
- 3:32heavenly beings. That is those sign.
- 3:37There's signs in the skies to indicate day and night and the
- 3:42time of year and the time of the month and all of those things.
- 3:48In the Old Testament when the heavenly beings are mentioned,
- 3:54and by that I mean sun, moon and stars, it's almost always
- 3:57connected with this spiritual reality as well the the
- 4:01spiritual beings, angels and what would later become demons.
- 4:07That is to say, not that the sun or the moon or something is a
- 4:12spiritual being in and of itself.
- 4:14It's not that you look at the sun and you go, OK, well that
- 4:16must be this particular, you know, spiritual being.
- 4:21This is Gabriel or this is, you know, Satan is Venus.
- 4:25It's not like that, but instead just as far away in control
- 4:33things, if you will, signs, planets, stars, shooting stars,
- 4:39comets, meteors, all that, that give indications to us that if
- 4:45you will, in the mindset of those in the ancient Near East,
- 4:50it was almost like they control some aspects of our lives.
- 4:53That when these things show up, it is now this time of year,
- 4:58when these things appear, we know that there will be, you
- 5:02know, a high tide or there will be this or that.
- 5:04And so in their mind it was there is a alternate reality.
- 5:11There is a place far and above us and there are other beings
- 5:16that are in charge of things that we have no control over.
- 5:19And so in one sense they are greater than us.
- 5:23And so it became a way to think about the spiritual beings, that
- 5:27is things that are unseen but yet have an impact on our world.
- 5:34And so a great way to talk about that was the celestial beings.
- 5:39And so you and as you look at, you know, ancient Greek and
- 5:42Roman, I almost said theology, I don't know if that religions,
- 5:47they thought that those particular items were the gods.
- 5:54So they said, you know, Jupiter, this is this God as opposed to
- 6:02when it's written in scripture, it's this is a picture of this
- 6:07other reality. We don't have some sort of
- 6:10concrete thing that we can point to and say just, you know, go to
- 6:14this location and you can meet Michael or Gabriel or whatever
- 6:17other Angel or demon. And so things were pictures of
- 6:23spiritual beings. And so Satan, when you look at
- 6:28the creation narrative, the seven day creation narrative in
- 6:31particular, you would look at day, day #4 when God had
- 6:38inhabits the space above the heavens with the sun, moon and
- 6:45stars that he places the heavenly beings in their
- 6:49location and they are called to rule over days and nights and
- 6:55seasons and times and all of that.
- 6:57You can look at Genesis one for some of that.
- 6:59So that would be the first kind of elements of it.
- 7:02And then in in Genesis chapter one on day #5 God puts the birds
- 7:12in the air, He puts the fish in the sea.
- 7:14And then it says, and he made the Teneen.
- 7:18Also several translations will have that as the great sea
- 7:24monsters. This would be in other religions
- 7:30in the ancient Near East. They would say there's like
- 7:33chaos creatures, normally some sort of sea serpent type thing
- 7:39that rules over the sea and the sea always wants to take back
- 7:46over the land and to destroy it. And so as the writers of Genesis
- 7:51are writing, they say no, anything that exists, God has
- 7:54put in place. And while yes, there are, if you
- 7:57will, chaotic elements to our world.
- 8:00You can think of hurricanes and tornadoes, you can think of
- 8:03floods, you can think of tsunamis, and these different
- 8:05things that destroy and take life.
- 8:07But everything that exists comes from God.
- 8:12Not everything operates in the way that God intended it to
- 8:15because of some choices of free will.
- 8:19And we'll look at that just in one second.
- 8:21But as as the writers are thinking about the sea and about
- 8:30the forces of chaos, one of the words that comes up over and
- 8:34over and over again in the Old Testament is tannin.
- 8:37It is the great sea serpents, those masters of destruction.
- 8:43Again, this was not Speaking of a literal creature, but a
- 8:49figurative spiritual being that is seeking the destruction of
- 8:55life and humanity. And so that became a way that
- 8:59all throughout the Old Testament, if you do a word
- 9:01search on the tannin or the Tanninim, you would you would
- 9:07have to go to like Blue Letter Bible or Lagos or one of those
- 9:09ones that works with the original languages.
- 9:12You can see this used as a picture of spiritual beings over
- 9:15and over and over again. So whether day four in the
- 9:19creation of the sun, moon and stars, the heavenly beings, or
- 9:23in day 5, those elements here on earth that are destructive and
- 9:29chaotic and seeking the destruction and death and
- 9:32eradication of life and of and in particular of humanity, this
- 9:36is where we would place the creation of spiritual beings
- 9:42from that particular narrative. They precede us.
- 9:45The spiritual beings are older than the physical beings.
- 9:49And so that would be when Satan would be created.
- 9:54And I also want to mention as well that Satan was within the
- 10:00Garden of Eden initially as a spiritual being.
- 10:05In Ezekiel chapter 28, God says that he was a guardian cherub.
- 10:11He was on the holy mountain of God in Eden, the Garden of God,
- 10:16and he was interlaid with every kind of precious stone, and yet
- 10:23he rebelled against God through in in many ways.
- 10:29When you look at Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14, it almost seems that
- 10:33it's not that Satan fell from heaven, came to earth to the
- 10:39garden, and then fell and then caused the fall of mankind
- 10:42there. It's almost conjoined that
- 10:45Satan's fall from walking with God, communion with God, that
- 10:52happened in the Garden of Eden. That was the choice in which he
- 10:57fell. Eden was that place, that
- 10:59mountain where you have, if you will, heaven and earth
- 11:02overlapping, where there are spiritual beings and there are
- 11:05physical beings that were both there.
- 11:07And so that would make some sense of even why Adam and Eve
- 11:13didn't have a reaction to a talking serpent.
- 11:17Because as you look at the rest of Scripture, look at Isaiah 6,
- 11:21you can read about the Seraphim. That would be Seraphim, the name
- 11:27it means like burning the burning ones.
- 11:30It would always almost be like flaming snake guardians that are
- 11:35within the the throne room of God.
- 11:38And so it wouldn't have been odd for them to see these incredible
- 11:43creatures that are somewhat like our creatures here on earth, but
- 11:48very different and with the ability to speak.
- 11:51And you can look at Revelation 4 and 5 for some of that.
- 11:54And even Daniels trying to remember, there's a portion in
- 12:01Daniel where it also describes these beings.
- 12:03So all the way as you go through, you have these
- 12:07spiritual beings that often have some physical tangible elements.
- 12:12I'll say this as well, in Genesis 1, you have the
- 12:16Tanneneem, the great sea serpents that are mentioned.
- 12:20And then in Genesis 3 you have a serpent that instead of it being
- 12:26in the ocean far away in the chaos realm, if you will,
- 12:31instead it is within the garden. And so there's all sorts of
- 12:35pictures within Genesis showing us this is not just any like
- 12:39regular snake, this is a spiritual being.
- 12:41And the rest of Scripture names him as Satan the Devil.
- 12:47I do want to mention as well, Satan's name is the he is the
- 12:53accuser. So Hasatan would be more or less
- 12:58the name that is given. And that's not a proper name.
- 13:02It's it's a title. It's a job title.
- 13:05The accuser or the prosecution that Satan's job within God's
- 13:09court. And he does have a job.
- 13:11He's not just, if you will, doing whatever he wants.
- 13:15He actually has something that he has been given to do by God,
- 13:19which is you are to point out when people have sinned and done
- 13:26wrong. If you will show me where I need
- 13:30to bring justice or if you will bring the hammer down.
- 13:34And so as you look at the story of Job in chapters one and two,
- 13:38you can see Satan doing that where he tries to accuse people
- 13:41that haven't even done anything wrong.
- 13:43You can look at Job and and God providing a defense that God is
- 13:49the defense attorney against Satan's accusations.
- 13:52And you can read in Revelation chapter 12 that Satan is called
- 13:56the accuser of the brethren of the brothers and sisters in the
- 13:59Lord, the believers, and he accuses them before our God
- 14:03night and day. And so that is Satan's role.
- 14:08He's not just wandering wild in the world, but instead he has a
- 14:12specific job that he has been that given by the Lord.
- 14:18And if you will, he is the accuser who knows that his day
- 14:24in court is also coming. And so he bears a hatred towards
- 14:28humanity and that was even part of why he caused mankind to sin,
- 14:31that this, if you will, this second born, this late Comer was
- 14:36exalted even above what the spiritual beings had.
- 14:40The God created mankind for relationship in a way that he
- 14:44did not create the spiritual beings.
- 14:47He did not create them for relationship.
- 14:49He created them to serve and he created mankind that he would
- 14:53love them and care for them. So Satan hates humanity and so
- 14:59he instead he wanted to be in charge.
- 15:02He wanted to be God. And you can look at Isaiah 14
- 15:05and Ezekiel 28 to look more at that.
- 15:08And he caused the fall of mankind through his temptation
- 15:11of Eve. But I'm thankful that in Genesis
- 15:153, God promised Satan that he would eventually be crushed
- 15:20forever through a human descendant, through the seed,
- 15:24the offspring of the woman. That one from her lineage would
- 15:29destroy Satan forever. And you might go, OK, well, how
- 15:32are the humans going to defeat Satan?
- 15:34He is more powerful, He's more crafty, He's more intelligent.
- 15:39You can't just stab him with a sword.
- 15:41How in the world can you defeat Satan?
- 15:43Well, and it was through Jesus Christ and the one who was the
- 15:48perfect Son of God from all eternity past, and he was the
- 15:52one born 2000 years ago to the Virgin Mary, and he was the one
- 15:57that crushed the head of Satan through accomplishing
- 16:02redemption, that we were purchased back from the power of
- 16:06Satan. That just as Adam and Eve had
- 16:08listened to Satan and followed him, in one sense he became
- 16:12their king and their ruler, or as Paul said in Ephesians 2, he
- 16:16is the Prince of the power of the air.
- 16:19Or as Paul would also say in first Corinthians 2, that Satan
- 16:23is the God of this world. He's the one that's in charge.
- 16:25He's calling the shots and we listen to him before we come to
- 16:30Christ. Whether people know it or not,
- 16:32they are listening to Satan and they are accomplishing his will.
- 16:38But he was dethroned. He was crushed through what
- 16:43Jesus accomplished for us. That his power has been His
- 16:46power has been undone. And instead we now have a new
- 16:50King, King Jesus, the only worthy king, Satan.
- 16:54We can see in the Old Testament. He personally attacked key
- 16:57leaders like Moses and David. I want to encourage you, pray
- 17:01for your leaders, whether in your home, in your country, in
- 17:07your church. Pray that they would not fall
- 17:11into temptation, but that they would be delivered from the
- 17:14evil. 1 Even as we would read in the Lord's Prayer, Satan is
- 17:19considered the icon of sin and death and evil, personifying
- 17:23everything that is wrong with the world.
- 17:27The world is under the power of the Prince, of the power of the
- 17:29air, and those against God are, as we learn in Second Timothy
- 17:33chapter 2, they are captured by him to do his will.
- 17:38And so pray for people that they would be loosed from the
- 17:42blinding power of Satan and that they would realize the gospel.
- 17:46And we read about that in First Corinthians chapter 2 as well.
- 17:51I'm thankful that not only was Jesus crushed through, sorry,
- 17:55not only was Satan crushed through what Jesus accomplished,
- 17:58but Romans 16, the Apostle Paul tells us that the God of peace
- 18:03will crush Satan under our feet shortly.
- 18:07And that every, every time that we meet together, every time
- 18:11that we see someone except the Lord, every time someone follows
- 18:15the Lord and believers baptism, every time God's people are
- 18:19praying, we are crushing the head of the serpent that over
- 18:23and over and over again he experiences the loss of what he
- 18:27had or the loss of a soul that was following him because Jesus
- 18:33is victorious over and over and over again.
- 18:37And so I'm thinking thankful for that, that we don't have to fear
- 18:40Satan like perhaps people in the world might fear a evil
- 18:45malevolent being. No, he is powerless against
- 18:50Christ. And so the we are not personally
- 18:52arrogant against him. We realize that he is a defeated
- 18:55foe who suffers defeat every single day and will one day end
- 19:00up in hell. So I want to mention as well the
- 19:06question was, OK, well is Satan not currently in hell?
- 19:10No. We have nothing that says to us
- 19:12that he is in hell. And in fact, in first Peter
- 19:16chapter 5, we're told that the devil walks about like a roaring
- 19:20lion, seeking whom he may devour.
- 19:23Satan is looking for people that he can destroy the lives of that
- 19:27they would alienate themselves, they would alienate their
- 19:30friends and family, that they would be unlike God and all of
- 19:34their words and thoughts and actions that they would take
- 19:37life or that they would make life miserable for others.
- 19:40That is the way of Satan and Satan is looking for that.
- 19:44Even as we saw in Ephesians chapter 4, Satan works through
- 19:48the anger of people that through violence and and wickedness,
- 19:52evil, slander, all of those things.
- 19:54Satan accomplishes his will, which is why Paul told the
- 19:57Ephesian Ephesian church, don't let the sun go down on your
- 20:02anger. Be be angry.
- 20:04Have you know have some desire? For justice in your life, but
- 20:08don't allow that to run how you live because that will give
- 20:13place to the devil. So the devil works through your
- 20:17anger. So be wary of that.
- 20:20There can be a good anger, an anger that wants justice, but
- 20:24Satan is the accuser. He's the prosecution.
- 20:26He wants quote, UN quote justice as well, but he will lead you to
- 20:32not rely on God's sentencing and God's judgment.
- 20:36He instead wants you to be judge, jury, and executioner in
- 20:40the lives of those around you. As we close today, I want to
- 20:46look just very briefly at what is Satan's end.
- 20:49So we've seen Satan's beginning. We've seen what he does, how he
- 20:52operates in the world, his goals to attack leaders, to destroy
- 20:58people, to work through our anger.
- 21:01But he has a certain future. Satan will one day lead the
- 21:05whole world in rebellion through his kind of unholy Trinity.
- 21:11So Satan will have his false Messiah, the the Antichrist and
- 21:15his herald who's called the false prophet in Revelation
- 21:19making a sort of unholy Trinity with Satan kind of taking the
- 21:23role of the Father, mother, the Antichrist, taking the role of
- 21:27Jesus the Son and the herald. The false prophet will be like
- 21:32the Holy Spirit who tells people about the Son.
- 21:36And so he or Satan will make his his unholy Trinity and he will
- 21:41try and lead the whole world in opposition and rebellion to God.
- 21:45But we are told that upon Jesus's return, he will be
- 21:48thrown into the bottomless pit for 1000 years at the conclusion
- 21:54of the tribulation that Satan will be thrown into this
- 21:58bottomless pit. It's the deep he has not even
- 22:02during that time. So as Jesus returns at the end
- 22:05of the tribulation, the the Antichrist and the false
- 22:10prophet, they are thrown into the lake of fire.
- 22:13But Satan is not thrown into the lake of fire at that point.
- 22:16Instead, he's thrown into the bottomless pit.
- 22:19He is chained. He's he's, he's restricted and
- 22:24thrown into this pit for 1000 years.
- 22:27At the end of that thousand years, Scripture says that he
- 22:29will be released from his imprisonment for one final
- 22:33rebellion against God. He will amass an army of
- 22:37everyone foolish enough to follow him during the earthly
- 22:41reign of Christ in the Millennium.
- 22:43And as that army is totally destroyed from heaven by God
- 22:47himself, Satan will then be thrown into the lake of fire.
- 22:52That that fire is pulling from the fire of God's presence, and
- 22:56it it amasses in one place is kind of the picture that
- 22:59Daniel's going for from Daniel Chapter 7 and then Revelation
- 23:041920 and 21. So Satan is then thrown into the
- 23:08lake of fire, and that fire is the fire from God's presence.
- 23:13It comes from His very throne, from His being.
- 23:16We read the verses in Hebrews. Our God is a consuming fire.
- 23:20This is His Holiness, His making right evil, and Satan is thrown
- 23:27into the lake of fire, and scripture says that he is
- 23:30tormented day and night, forever and ever with the fire of God's
- 23:36own presence. Some people, mostly from
- 23:39cartoons, honestly have thought of Satan or the demons as like
- 23:44being in charge of hell or that they are the ones doing
- 23:49tormenting of other people. Nothing could be further from
- 23:52the truth. In fact, what we read in I
- 23:54believe it's Matthew 25 is Jesus says hell the the lake of fire.
- 24:00This place of punishment is prepared for the devil and his
- 24:05angels, that Satan is the one that the lake of fire is created
- 24:10for, and that he will be punished day and night, forever
- 24:14and ever and ever as just punishment from a holy and good
- 24:20and righteous God. That Satan will not get away
- 24:24with anything that he has ever done, but for all of eternity
- 24:27he's going to be tormented, being in the presence of God.
- 24:32And on that day we will recognize the justice and the
- 24:36goodness of our God. That evil is destroyed.
- 24:40Or even as we read in Revelation chapter 20, that even death and
- 24:44the grave are thrown into the lake of fire and they are
- 24:48consumed. That for the child of God, for
- 24:51all of eternity, we experience God's goodness.
- 24:54We are in God's presence and we love it because we love being
- 24:57around Him. But Satan cannot stand it.
- 25:01And So what is blessed to us is torment to him forever and ever
- 25:07and ever. I'll give one illustration.
- 25:10This is a little silly, so I apologize.
- 25:13I love Hawaiian pizza. It's delicious to me and you
- 25:17could feed it to me once a week forever and I'd be super happy.
- 25:20I would love that. I have friends.
- 25:22I don't think my friend Mike or my friend Hannah ever listen to
- 25:25this. If you do, I'm glad that you're
- 25:27here. They hate Hawaiian pizza.
- 25:29They believe that pineapple doesn't belong on pizza.
- 25:32And so if you were to feed them Hawaiian pizza once a week, that
- 25:35would be their least favorite meal for years and years and
- 25:38years, because they don't love it.
- 25:40They don't want to have that in their life.
- 25:42So here, God's presence is good for us.
- 25:46We love it, we want to be around it, but because Satan hates God,
- 25:52he has no desire for God's presence.
- 25:54It is a constant source of torment for him, and I'm
- 25:58thankful that evil will be done away with.
- 26:00It is punished, Evil itself is tormented forever and ever.
- 26:04But we who are imperfect too, sometimes Satan can bring
- 26:08accusations to God of stuff we have legitimately done because
- 26:12of Jesus. We have been forgiven and
- 26:14restored forever that no one can bring anything to the charge of
- 26:17God's elect because it is Christ who justifies, who intercedes
- 26:21for us on the right hand of God. He is our defense attorney.
- 26:25And so I love, I love my God. He is a good and just and right
- 26:31and perfect in all of his ways. Satan is a defeated foe with
- 26:37eternal torment awaiting him. So today, don't listen to him.
- 26:40Don't give in to your anger. Don't give into the temptation
- 26:43to think that God's holding out on you or that you could have
- 26:47more joy if you were outside of the presence and will of God.
- 26:51Instead, pursue Jesus, the one who crushed the head of the
- 26:54serpent and through our life today, we can crush the head of
- 26:58the serpent again and again and again through telling him you're
- 27:01defeated. I'm not listening to you.
- 27:03I'm listening to the Lord. You know, I, I love the song.
- 27:07I thank God the the bridge of which goes the hell lost another
- 27:11one. I am free so no.
- 27:14This was a a bit longer of an episode so thank you for tuning
- 27:17in. I hope this was an encouragement
- 27:19to you. If you have any more questions
- 27:21about Satan or devils, the End Times, anything like that, would
- 27:26be happy to have another episode on it.
- 27:29Beginning next week, I'm moving to a weekly format for
- 27:33Tabernacle Talk. This will save me a ton of time,
- 27:36especially as I go into a really, really busy season of
- 27:40ministry. And so I appreciate I'm not
- 27:42going to do just weekly forever. There'll be times that I move
- 27:46over to doing weekdays. So I think I'm going to be
- 27:50completing book 5 of Psalms will be my next study.
- 27:54And so when I get to Psalm 119, I'm going to have that one be
- 27:59weekdays because there's 2222 sections in Psalm 119.
- 28:05And so I'll go through that one on weekdays, otherwise it'll
- 28:09take me, you know, a year to get through just book 5 of Psalms.
- 28:12So that's what's kind of on the road ahead.
- 28:15But thank you for tuning in. Have a wonderful day.
