- 0:13Speaker 1: I think we've met before.
- 0:15Speaker 2: A long time ago, right? I think so, yeah.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Because you've been doing this for a minute as well.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been doing stand-up for... This is my 16th
- 0:25Speaker 2: year as my... my main income on my tax form.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It's like, I know at that point it gets real. Like,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I can't, this isn't just monopoly money. I
- 0:37Speaker 1: have to like really account for it.
- 0:39Speaker 2: For sure. How many little gigs do I need to
- 0:42Speaker 2: stack to make this number at the end of the month?
- 0:45Speaker 1: For real zero.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And then repeat. Yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Where are you originally from?
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'm from here.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You're from here? Yeah. Okay, okay.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I'm one of the few, like, born and raised San
- 0:55Speaker 2: Diego people you'll ever meet.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, why do I feel like I met.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You in L.A.? I lived in L.A. for eight years.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Okay, okay. Yeah, because I was like, I could have
- 1:03Speaker 1: sworn I met you in L.A., like, around the store
- 1:05Speaker 1: or something at that one point.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yep, yep, yep. I'm a comedy store person.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And then, so, you came back. I mean,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I don't, I know why you came back. It's fucking
- 1:14Speaker 1: awesome here.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I... It is amazing here. I've been
- 1:20Speaker 2: to almost all 50 states and it's hard to find
- 1:23Speaker 2: what we have going on here anywhere else. And then
- 1:27Speaker 2: my wife and I had our first kid seven years
- 1:30Speaker 2: ago last week. So it's like, I'm not raising a
- 1:33Speaker 2: child and L.A. when my mom and her mom are
- 1:36Speaker 2: both here, and it's.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Like, you need community to make it work. Need community,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and a babysitter.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Otherwise, you're doing what I'm doing now, which
- 1:45Speaker 2: is like, I have three kids in the van outside
- 1:47Speaker 2: with the window cracked, you know, just to make comedy work. Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Right on. So, for real, you have three now?
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Oh, okay. What are the ages?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Seven, four, and two.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Okay, and boy, girl, boy, girl, boy? Boy, girl, boy. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That's what's up, man.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Girl in the middle.
- 2:07Speaker 1: That's interesting. Okay, so I'm, because I don't know if
- 2:10Speaker 1: you mind saying your age or anything like that. I'm 41. 41, okay, yeah, 44.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I don't have any kids, but like, that's like a
- 2:20Speaker 1: whole new kind of thing I'm not even aware of. Like,
- 2:23Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, when we got pregnant with my son, my oldest,
- 2:30Speaker 2: it was like, the range of emotions as a comedian,
- 2:35Speaker 2: just like, Oh, I think I'm, I think I'm retired now.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I think my job, like I, how am I going
- 2:40Speaker 2: to do this and support a child? And like the
- 2:43Speaker 2: time that it takes to, to be good at standup
- 2:47Speaker 2: and the time that it takes to be a present
- 2:49Speaker 2: parent is like, something's got to give, but you, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: you figure it out.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It's so, cause, cause I mean, I would assume for me,
- 2:57Speaker 1: for like, same thing. Like I think fear would just.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Setting crippling dude yeah crippling i literally thought my life
- 3:05Speaker 2: was over and then i had one of my best
- 3:09Speaker 2: friends was like uh pointed out her sister she's like
- 3:13Speaker 2: dude my sister had twins when she was a junior
- 3:15Speaker 2: in high school you're in your 30s you're gonna be fine.
- 3:19Speaker 1: You're gonna figure it out great point.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And it was literally the most like i needed to
- 3:23Speaker 2: hear that it was the most like oh yeah people
- 3:26Speaker 2: do this with much less than what i have right
- 3:30Speaker 2: now so it's like i'll We'll make it work. So funny.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Fast forward, you know, seven years. Now we have three.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And as of a week ago, the factory is shut down.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So we're solid with three.
- 3:41Speaker 1: That's it. The cutoff.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, literally. The cutoff. That's awesome.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Well, that's good to hear because I still, I got,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you know, get worried. Like I'm like, like you said too, oh,
- 3:52Speaker 1: comedy career is over. Because it's funny because it's like
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm so used to being selfish in that way. But
- 3:57Speaker 1: now it's like completely the opposite of being selfless.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it really establishes your why. I think, like,
- 4:05Speaker 2: before I had kids, I, you know, I probably couldn't
- 4:09Speaker 2: tell you my exact why. Like, I want to be successful.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's not like a solid why. It's like, why am
- 4:16Speaker 2: I doing this? Because I need to support these kids
- 4:19Speaker 2: and give them a better life than I had. And
- 4:21Speaker 2: it really just, like, it's a fuel, you know.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And then, so it's funny. So, like, because there are... Well,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you said the oldest is seven, right? Yeah. So they're
- 4:33Speaker 1: not even in school. Well, seven's cool.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll be starting second grade next year.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So we'll have a second grader and a TK, which
- 4:41Speaker 2: is the level between preschool and kindergarten, I found out. TK,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and then we'll have one kid still at home starting
- 4:51Speaker 2: in the fall.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So that's another thing, too. Because I haven't had that.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Basically also too, they, they represent time, you know, too,
- 5:01Speaker 1: as well. So it's like, I've been doing the same
- 5:02Speaker 1: shit since I was, you know, 27. So it's like, oh,
- 5:06Speaker 1: I don't, I'm like, sometimes I'll get asked my age
- 5:08Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, that's right. No, I've been doing
- 5:09Speaker 1: the same shit. I have no gauge.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But also too, like you get to see, or you
- 5:13Speaker 1: get to relive stuff with your kids. What's, what's been
- 5:16Speaker 1: the thing the most that you're like, oh, I forgot
- 5:18Speaker 1: about that. I love doing this.
- 5:19Speaker 2: That is the, one of the coolest parts about having kids.
- 5:22Speaker 2: If you, um, I mean, we've all met parents, especially
- 5:27Speaker 2: in this game, that, like, the child is a burden.
- 5:31Speaker 2: They're not, like, enjoying it.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But if you enjoy it and look at it through
- 5:37Speaker 2: a kid's eyes, it's fun to watch a human experience
- 5:42Speaker 2: something that you know well for the first time, and
- 5:46Speaker 2: it gives you kind of a first-time experience. Like, the
- 5:51Speaker 2: first one that pops into my head now is, like, looking...
- 5:54Speaker 2: Seeing an elephant in a book and then going to
- 5:57Speaker 2: the zoo and seeing an elephant and watching the face
- 6:00Speaker 2: of like, oh my, oh shoot. Like that's an elephant.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Or like the arcade for the first time. I experienced
- 6:11Speaker 2: a first time moment in my life with my son.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Last week we celebrated his seventh birthday at Chuck E.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Cheese.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I'm 41. Never been to Chuck E. Cheese my entire life.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Really?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Until last week. we're super poor so we didn't go
- 6:25Speaker 2: to chuggy cheese the the birthday party was at the
- 6:28Speaker 2: park for free oh yeah run yourself until you're tired
- 6:30Speaker 2: yeah um spray each other with the water hose isn't
- 6:34Speaker 2: that fun and now it's like we're in a position
- 6:36Speaker 2: where hey you can invite this number of it's a
- 6:40Speaker 2: finite number of friends but you guys will get unlimited
- 6:42Speaker 2: games we can afford to get you unlimited games for
- 6:45Speaker 2: this amount of time and i'm also in there like
- 6:49Speaker 2: uh Yeah, I'm going to need a card, too. I
- 6:51Speaker 2: need to play. I want to play. I've never been here.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I want to play.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I want some skee-ball. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Skee-ball, pop a shot. I was doing all the things.
- 6:59Speaker 2: We're getting tickets.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's so funny, too, that you said that about, like,
- 7:03Speaker 1: you know, because, I mean, like, I kind of contextualize it, too,
- 7:06Speaker 1: here and there, but, like, the massive amount of scale
- 7:08Speaker 1: that it has that it adds on to when it's
- 7:10Speaker 1: with your kid or your, you know, because, like, I enjoy...
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'll watch a movie over and over again and I'll
- 7:16Speaker 1: watch it with someone that hasn't seen it because I
- 7:17Speaker 1: can't wait for them to experience. And it's like, okay, great.
- 7:21Speaker 1: But like, yeah, I can get like, it's funny because
- 7:23Speaker 1: what you described is like, oh, I get that. But
- 7:25Speaker 1: I probably only get a tenth of what you're talking
- 7:28Speaker 1: about because it's like, oh, no, this is my son
- 7:31Speaker 1: and or my daughter. And now... You know, we're going to,
- 7:34Speaker 1: we share this now. And definitely more questions and more answers. And, oh,
- 7:39Speaker 1: this is your interest? Oh, I'll dive all in.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And it also opens your eyes to, like, we have
- 7:49Speaker 2: a general knowledge of most things as adults. But then,
- 7:53Speaker 2: but we don't have, like, a detailed understanding of almost anything.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And you find that out when your son's like, or
- 8:00Speaker 2: your kid is like.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Hey, what is.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Why do we do this? And it's like, I don't know.
- 8:04Speaker 2: We just do. But why? And then you're like, why?
- 8:09Speaker 3: Huh.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Why do it? And it's a lot of self-reflection, a
- 8:13Speaker 2: lot of critical thinking.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It's like, I need that, actually, especially as a comedian. Yeah. Yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you're like, you know what? That's actually a really good point.
- 8:19Speaker 1: For sure.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And then you ask your kid, you're like, are you
- 8:23Speaker 2: gonna use that, or can I have, is that mine, or?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Because that's really good, man. I don't want to step
- 8:31Speaker 1: on your shit.
- 8:32Speaker 2: You came up with it, but like, are you gonna?
- 8:34Speaker 1: We were in conversation together.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It's funny, too, because like you were saying, with the
- 8:42Speaker 1: comedy and stuff like that, and going back at like
- 8:46Speaker 1: the why, oh, no, that's what I was gonna say.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I ADD'd and had to replay. Yeah. It's funny.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I remember Animaniacs.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Did you ever watch that?
- 8:55Speaker 2: Uh-uh.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So there was this cartoon character, and her name, I
- 8:58Speaker 1: can't remember. It was Buttons and something. It was a
- 9:01Speaker 1: dog that she would always have, but she would always
- 9:02Speaker 1: just get lost. And Buttons was this dog trying to
- 9:04Speaker 1: protect her from danger. And she would walk up to strangers,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and she'd be like, what are you doing? And then
- 9:11Speaker 1: he would tell her. And then she was like, why?
- 9:13Speaker 1: And then he'd tell her again, why? And then he
- 9:15Speaker 1: was like, get out of here. You're bothering me. But
- 9:17Speaker 1: it's so funny, because that's what that reminded me of.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Because I was a big fan of Animaniacs and cartoons,
- 9:23Speaker 1: which is something that kind of isn't around anymore for kids.
- 9:27Speaker 2: It isn't around the way we experienced it for sure.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I forgot.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I read this somewhere or I saw it on an
- 9:35Speaker 2: Instagram reel or something. But the way almost everything is
- 9:40Speaker 2: designed now is to keep them locked in. So when
- 9:45Speaker 2: we were kids... Like we would wake up on Saturday
- 9:47Speaker 2: morning and you would know the time that your favorite, whatever,
- 9:50Speaker 2: Tom and Jerry was coming on and you would watch it.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And there may be two episodes or 20 minutes and
- 9:56Speaker 2: then Tom and Jerry was done for the rest of
- 9:58Speaker 2: the day until next week. And now it's like, you
- 10:01Speaker 2: can literally watch 10 hours of Tom and Jerry back
- 10:04Speaker 2: to back to back to back. And you don't even,
- 10:07Speaker 2: it's seamless, you know? And so they don't appreciate it.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Arcades at the Chuck E. Cheese. It's like that you
- 10:15Speaker 2: got the card that's unlimited. It doesn't, When you die,
- 10:18Speaker 2: it doesn't make you go to the beginning to figure
- 10:20Speaker 2: out how to get past this point. You just continue
- 10:23Speaker 2: from right here, and so the game never ends. So
- 10:26Speaker 2: it's not like on Mario, how we were like, okay,
- 10:29Speaker 2: I keep getting to this point, and I don't know
- 10:31Speaker 2: how to jump over this crevasse.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It'll take you all the way back.
- 10:36Speaker 2: All the way back and figure it out. Not anymore.
- 10:39Speaker 2: It's like, okay, start from here again.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you're good.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Go again.
- 10:42Speaker 1: So crazy. Go again. Especially to, like you said, arcades.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I remember when the arcade was better than the home system.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And now the home system is way better.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Way superior. Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Because I remember getting Street Fighter 2... A friend of
- 10:55Speaker 1: mine got it. I say I got it, but a
- 10:56Speaker 1: friend got it.
- 10:58Speaker 2: If your friend has it, it's yours.
- 11:00Speaker 1: That's how I saw it. I would get good at
- 11:03Speaker 1: video games at other people's houses.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I did not own a game system growing up.
- 11:09Speaker 2: It's like, oh, I'm allowed to come over?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Then I'll be there.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I'll be there. Hey, you actually suck at this. Can
- 11:15Speaker 2: I watch this? And I will tell you that. I mean,
- 11:19Speaker 2: you're an adult, so you know. It graduates into adulthood.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Out of video games to, like, other things. So, like,
- 11:25Speaker 2: if your friend is a member at a place, you're
- 11:27Speaker 2: also a member there.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 2: If your friend has a pool and you don't, you
- 11:31Speaker 2: do have a pool. I got a pool, yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I started inviting people over. I was like, hey, I'll
- 11:35Speaker 1: get him up. We'll go over there, man. He's okay.
- 11:36Speaker 1: He don't give a fuck.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I could let us. I know the code.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It's good. We're good. We're good.
- 11:41Speaker 2: For real. So, yeah, that's something we definitely, millennials for sure,
- 11:45Speaker 2: have taken from our childhood into adult life.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Yeah. It's yours.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's mine.
- 11:49Speaker 1: For real. And it's so crazy. Like you said about
- 11:51Speaker 1: the cartoons and how like, um, like it was, it
- 11:53Speaker 1: was also like something sacred to like, um, everyone saw
- 11:57Speaker 1: it at the same time. So it's like everyone got
- 11:59Speaker 1: that same experience. So it's like, oh, okay, cool. But yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 1: now it's like, like you said, it's on demand and
- 12:04Speaker 1: it's like, there's no, um, struggle to get to it.
- 12:06Speaker 2: For sure.
- 12:07Speaker 1: There's no, there's no anticipation or no waiting.
- 12:09Speaker 2: So no appreciation for it. So there's no conversation on
- 12:13Speaker 2: the playground about, Did you watch the episode last night?
- 12:16Speaker 1: Remember when The Simpsons was like that? It was like, dude,
- 12:18Speaker 1: the Halloween episodes.
- 12:21Speaker 2: That's funny you bring up The Simpsons. So I grew up,
- 12:24Speaker 2: my parents were super strict. So we did not have,
- 12:28Speaker 2: I didn't watch TV in the house until I was
- 12:31Speaker 2: like a junior in high school. So a lot of
- 12:33Speaker 2: the 90s sort of references go right over my head
- 12:36Speaker 2: because I didn't, we grew up in the country. We
- 12:39Speaker 2: had a couple of channels. and we would just rent
- 12:43Speaker 2: videos from the library. I got all mostly educational stuff
- 12:46Speaker 2: growing up, but there was a survival instinct that kicked
- 12:53Speaker 2: in very early, and I understood like, oh, everyone's watching
- 12:58Speaker 2: The Simpsons show. I had no idea what it was,
- 13:00Speaker 2: but all the cool people know about what's happening in
- 13:05Speaker 2: this show, so I would position myself on the bus
- 13:07Speaker 2: next to these kids that would always talk about The
- 13:10Speaker 2: Simpsons on the way to school. I would eavesdrop on
- 13:13Speaker 2: that conversation and then I would start my own conversations
- 13:16Speaker 2: at recess based on the conversations I had eavesdropped on
- 13:20Speaker 2: so no one knew that I didn't watch The Simpsons
- 13:22Speaker 2: at home.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Wow. So it was like, you were acting, you were
- 13:26Speaker 1: just becoming an actor. Wow.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So, and that, so to this day, I'm like, I've
- 13:31Speaker 2: seen some episodes, but it doesn't hit the way it
- 13:33Speaker 2: would hit for someone that grew up watching it.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Grew up watching it. And I was going to say too, like,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and so that, when that translates in the comedy too, like,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you know, secondhand stuff or just like, you know, like,
- 13:44Speaker 1: so I heard about all this. What's the thing? Yeah.
- 13:46Speaker 2: So it's, uh, it was easier to, my brain has
- 13:49Speaker 2: always kind of been working that way. I felt like,
- 13:51Speaker 2: how do you translate a story to people?
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah. And then like, cause like, and you're saying to like, uh, um,
- 13:58Speaker 1: questions about questions too. So it's like, you're going to
- 14:00Speaker 1: definitely like when you bring it to an audience and
- 14:02Speaker 1: it's like, so I've been hearing about that. And so wait,
- 14:04Speaker 1: hold on. Let me, okay. Let me get this straight. Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So it's, it's great to have like a, yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Hey, can you fill in some of these? There's something
- 14:12Speaker 2: missing here. Do you guys know about this? And the
- 14:14Speaker 2: audience doesn't know that I'm literally like, I'm crowdsourcing information.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Yeah. And it's great, too, because it's a double dip
- 14:22Speaker 1: on the joke. It's like, I'm going to create an
- 14:27Speaker 1: inside joke for all of us.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And then we can laugh at the people that don't
- 14:31Speaker 1: get it. And we can also make those people up, too.
- 14:34Speaker 2: For sure. And also, you're in my writing room right now.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 2: So next week- This joke is going to be so
- 14:40Speaker 2: much better.
- 14:40Speaker 1: It's going to be fine.
- 14:41Speaker 2: And then they're going to add a little bit.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah. And we'll double dip on it. No. And so
- 14:46Speaker 1: you said... So 16 years.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And you started here. Was it when this was a
- 14:52Speaker 1: comedy palace? Yes. Okay.
- 14:54Speaker 2: So this place is... This place we're at, Mic Drop
- 14:57Speaker 2: Comedy Club in San Diego. And this is like a
- 15:00Speaker 2: pretty big piece of my origin story as like a
- 15:04Speaker 2: professional comedian because... three years into doing standup NBC had, uh,
- 15:09Speaker 2: their diversity showcase here. And somebody told me I was
- 15:13Speaker 2: at the open mic at the comedy store and that
- 15:16Speaker 2: was on a Sunday and they were doing the showcase
- 15:19Speaker 2: here on a Monday. And someone asked me, Oh, are
- 15:20Speaker 2: you going to do the NBC showcase? I had no
- 15:24Speaker 2: idea they were having one. I was like, what showcase? Uh,
- 15:27Speaker 2: they're going to see a hundred people over there. NBC to,
- 15:30Speaker 2: to like the winner gets a holding deal and does
- 15:33Speaker 2: this college tour. And, people are coming from all over
- 15:36Speaker 2: to like get in the hundred, like people are sleeping
- 15:38Speaker 2: outside of the club. And I was like, I don't
- 15:41Speaker 2: believe you. I'll drive by. And if there's people out there,
- 15:44Speaker 2: then I'll, then I'll run back to my house and
- 15:46Speaker 2: get a jacket or something, get us, get a spot
- 15:49Speaker 2: in line. And so sure enough, there were people, LA, Arizona, Vegas,
- 15:53Speaker 2: people were coming here for their showcase. And so I
- 15:57Speaker 2: was number 27 in line. Oh, great. And, and I
- 16:01Speaker 2: made it to the top 10 of that showcase for the,
- 16:04Speaker 2: country and did the NACA and did the the college
- 16:09Speaker 2: tour and that really like off the strength of that
- 16:11Speaker 2: I started quitting all my part-time jobs and yeah eventually
- 16:16Speaker 2: here I am NACA.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Was the goal too it was it was like it
- 16:19Speaker 1: was like wait what you're gonna get I'm gonna get
- 16:21Speaker 1: to go to schools where people are the same age
- 16:24Speaker 1: as me at that time you know the same age
- 16:25Speaker 1: as me I'm gonna be doing stand-up and I'm gonna
- 16:27Speaker 1: get paid decent yeah and you guys are gonna like
- 16:30Speaker 1: pay for the room and board I.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Was like this is amazing and it was like It
- 16:33Speaker 2: was really like a crash course in, it was a
- 16:39Speaker 2: crash course in all aspects of the job of being
- 16:43Speaker 2: a comedian. Because for a lot of us, we're coming
- 16:45Speaker 2: straight from open mics to like, I mean, I'll speak
- 16:49Speaker 2: for myself. I had no like real professional experience. And
- 16:52Speaker 2: then I'm, I excel in this showcase. Now I go
- 16:57Speaker 2: to the NACA. I did pretty well. I got a
- 16:59Speaker 2: bunch of schools and in the contract, every show was
- 17:02Speaker 2: 60 minutes, 60 minutes set in front of these kids.
- 17:07Speaker 2: And it's like, I might've had, I might've had 20
- 17:10Speaker 2: to 25 of like actual performable. I know the, the
- 17:16Speaker 2: outcome of these bits kind of material. And then now
- 17:20Speaker 2: I have to fill 30 other minutes. And so it
- 17:23Speaker 2: was like, I taught me a lot about how to
- 17:26Speaker 2: tell stories, how to maximize material, how to, how to
- 17:30Speaker 2: read an audience and how to really like stretch when necessary,
- 17:34Speaker 2: how to cut when necessary, like a lot of how
- 17:37Speaker 2: to travel in an agile way, how to sleep on
- 17:42Speaker 2: a plane, how to like all of these things that
- 17:44Speaker 2: I use to this day, I put in my toolbox
- 17:48Speaker 2: from that like experience experience, which started right outside of here.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Number 27 in line.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I was going to say, I was just talking to Cassidy,
- 17:58Speaker 1: who's on the last one, and I was talking about,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I go, it's 45 minutes now.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 1: The comedy clubs and everywhere, it's 40 minutes. I go,
- 18:06Speaker 1: back in the day, I go, and I'm like, I
- 18:07Speaker 1: sound so old, but back in the day is not
- 18:09Speaker 1: even that far back in the day. Yeah. And I go,
- 18:10Speaker 1: you had to do an hour.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Ten years ago.
- 18:13Speaker 1: One hour, dude. One hour, yeah. And I go, and
- 18:14Speaker 1: it's so funny because like, you know, 45 minutes is like, it's, it's, it's,
- 18:19Speaker 1: I go, once you get to having 45 minutes, I go,
- 18:21Speaker 1: for some reason, like, as soon as you break that
- 18:23Speaker 1: 45 minute mark, you can do another 30 by accident. Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Because it's kind of like breaking your sleep. Like, oh,
- 18:28Speaker 1: so now I'm up. Now I'm up. And it's like,
- 18:30Speaker 1: all right, boom. But that was also too, I was
- 18:32Speaker 1: going to ask, in the, in the, do you remember
- 18:35Speaker 1: who won the diversity that year? Because I remember like after,
- 18:37Speaker 1: like it was.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I think that year it was, um, Kevin Shea. It
- 18:44Speaker 2: was either Kevin Shea or... It was Kevin Shea or
- 18:48Speaker 2: Ron G won that year.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I just recently worked with Kevin earlier this year. I
- 18:54Speaker 1: haven't seen him in a while.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I haven't seen him in a minute.
- 18:56Speaker 1: He moved to Sacramento.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he was talking about how he moved to a
- 19:00Speaker 1: whole bunch of different places. He moved to just Sacramento,
- 19:02Speaker 1: so we were doing the punchline together not too long ago,
- 19:05Speaker 1: in the early of the year. Such a chill dude.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Such a beast of a writer, too.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And so, like, Like, goofy offstage.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I'm an idiot. I'm stupid. I was like.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yeah. But onstage, so serious. Yeah. Boom.
- 19:20Speaker 1: And then, because for a minute, they're like, that was
- 19:21Speaker 1: the hot shit, too. The diversity show, the NBC, every
- 19:25Speaker 1: year you're waiting for it to come.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Because it was like, yo, they're looking for people all over.
- 19:29Speaker 1: They got, like, satellites all over. And, like, I think...
- 19:34Speaker 1: I think Kabir won it one year. RIP to Kabir. RIP, RIP.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Mikey Winfield.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yep.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Then there was, I wonder if Sammy, if Sammy won.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I don't know if Sammy won. I don't know.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Or maybe even shared it. i think there was i
- 19:50Speaker 1: think nick gara won too at one year um but
- 19:53Speaker 1: yeah no it was uh uh it was a big
- 19:54Speaker 1: deal it was a big uh it was it's i
- 19:57Speaker 1: mean is it still around.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I don't know to be honest i don't think so.
- 20:01Speaker 1: The last time i did it it was um we
- 20:04Speaker 1: were at levity live. Uh, they had just levity live,
- 20:07Speaker 1: just opened up an Oxford. I took over, uh, the improvs. And, um,
- 20:11Speaker 1: it was funny because it was all of us. Sammy
- 20:14Speaker 1: was hosting. Actually, it was funny because Sammy was hosting it. And, um,
- 20:18Speaker 1: I was like, dude, it's, it's cause you do a minute,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you do one minute.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And so, uh, I went up and, um, I did, uh,
- 20:26Speaker 1: I was just like, Hey everybody, you know, I was like, I'm,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I don't, I don't know what to say. I was like,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I just started goofing off and it was like, I'm
- 20:34Speaker 1: transitioning into a bike. I could do whatever you want.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I did like four different accents in like British, Scottish,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and transformed into an Australian, into an Irish. And then
- 20:49Speaker 1: I was like, also, too, you guys take care of
- 20:50Speaker 1: the staff. You guys da-da-da-da. I started doing it in
- 20:52Speaker 1: the end of a club set. I was like, I'm
- 20:54Speaker 1: selling shirts. In a minute.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I was like, God, this guy.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I couldn't dance in a club set. I was like,
- 21:00Speaker 1: if any birthday is out there, I was like, I'm
- 21:02Speaker 1: selling shirts. Yeah. And I got up. Because I was
- 21:05Speaker 1: the first person to go. I went up. And then Sammy,
- 21:09Speaker 1: he was like, dude, that was the best. Because I go,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I don't even care for the comedy. I go, I'm
- 21:14Speaker 1: playing you guys back there. And I was just talking.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I think it was the dude that does The Tonight Show.
- 21:19Speaker 1: But I didn't get picked. I didn't get picked. But
- 21:22Speaker 1: it felt so, like, it's so funny. Because that's just
- 21:24Speaker 1: where my brain is at. The comics were like, that
- 21:26Speaker 1: was fucking. Like, I wish I would have thought of that.
- 21:28Speaker 1: And I go, yeah. But I didn't get picked. Matter
- 21:31Speaker 1: of fact, it was so funny. Because Rene Garza.
- 21:32Speaker 2: You relieved the pressure. You went first and everyone's nervous.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Nobody knows what they're going to do in one minute.
- 21:39Speaker 2: And then to see you go up there and just
- 21:42Speaker 2: be so playful and courageous, that probably relieved a lot
- 21:48Speaker 2: of pressure for everyone else.
- 21:50Speaker 1: It turned into a fun... Now that you said that.
- 21:52Speaker 2: You cracked the room.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I'm reflecting back that it was... After that, it was
- 21:56Speaker 1: a fun show. A fun little industry show. Because then
- 22:00Speaker 1: all of a sudden, the comics weren't just not laughing.
- 22:03Speaker 1: They were laughing at other comic stuff. And so it
- 22:05Speaker 1: was kind of fun.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It's a big deal.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it was fun.
- 22:07Speaker 2: It's a big deal. I remember that one minute as well.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Because again, I walked into it with zero research or
- 22:16Speaker 2: understanding of what was going on. And so they're like, yeah,
- 22:20Speaker 2: come back here at this time. You'll do one minute.
- 22:22Speaker 2: And then we'll see if you make it to the
- 22:23Speaker 2: next round. And I was like, oh, OK. So I
- 22:26Speaker 2: spent the morning at home just trying to figure out,
- 22:29Speaker 2: what do you do in a minute? And I made
- 22:32Speaker 2: it past the minute to the two minute. The second
- 22:34Speaker 2: one was two minutes. The callback was two minutes, and
- 22:37Speaker 2: then we did the two minute. And then I believe
- 22:41Speaker 2: it was just two rounds, and then the showcase was
- 22:43Speaker 2: five minutes. So it was like one minute, two minute,
- 22:45Speaker 2: five minute. And I remember, fast forward, I'm at NACA
- 22:50Speaker 2: in Boston, and Kendra Carter was the person in charge
- 22:54Speaker 2: of it when I was going through and I had
- 22:58Speaker 2: a moment after the NACA showcase and I was like
- 23:00Speaker 2: I need to ask you the one minute the one
- 23:03Speaker 2: minute audition like that's the craziest like I don't like
- 23:08Speaker 2: none of us like were prepared for like one minute
- 23:10Speaker 2: like what is what was the purpose of the one
- 23:12Speaker 2: minute and she said um she said as a comedian
- 23:17Speaker 2: when you walk on stage she goes the walk from
- 23:21Speaker 2: off the stage to the microphone that first 10 seconds.
- 23:25Speaker 2: And then the first 30 seconds of you talking, the
- 23:28Speaker 2: audience makes a judgment on like what your show is
- 23:31Speaker 2: going to be and how you carry yourself as a
- 23:33Speaker 2: comedian in that first 30 seconds. So in a minute,
- 23:36Speaker 2: we kind of have an idea of what that next
- 23:40Speaker 2: piece is going to be. So we're looking. So what
- 23:43Speaker 2: they were looking for was like, how do you carry
- 23:45Speaker 2: yourself to start the show? Because most of us don't
- 23:49Speaker 2: have a one minute bit like you don't have a
- 23:51Speaker 2: one minute set. So it was a mechanical thing. Interesting.
- 23:56Speaker 2: So after she told me that, I was like, okay.
- 23:59Speaker 2: And from that moment on, so I'm three and a
- 24:01Speaker 2: half years into my career at that point, I was like, okay.
- 24:06Speaker 2: So from that point on to this day, I take
- 24:08Speaker 2: the walk to the stage and the first minute of
- 24:11Speaker 2: my show very serious. This is like a tone setter
- 24:15Speaker 2: and it's either an affirmation of what people are thinking
- 24:18Speaker 2: or like, okay, maybe we should like pay attention here.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Interesting. I didn't know that. That's actually, that's a really good,
- 24:24Speaker 1: that's a great tip.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Cause I wondered like, you know, like we all
- 24:27Speaker 2: just go like, what the, what the hell? One minute?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Like it's more like annoying and upsetting and then learning
- 24:33Speaker 2: the purpose. And then like, think about your friends when
- 24:36Speaker 2: they go on stage or like how many of our
- 24:39Speaker 2: friends just like screw off the first minute or whatever.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And it's like, and then they come off stage and
- 24:45Speaker 2: they're like, the crowd sucked. And it's like, well, you
- 24:47Speaker 2: kind of disrespected them from the, from the jump, the jump.
- 24:50Speaker 2: And so like, why would they come back? Like your
- 24:53Speaker 2: material is not strong enough to do that. Like, what
- 24:55Speaker 2: are you, unless you do it on purpose for whatever
- 24:58Speaker 2: the first bit is.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Like, dude, you should be kind of locked in when
- 25:02Speaker 2: you're walking on stage. Like these are adults who work,
- 25:05Speaker 2: who paid money to be here. Like let's respect the time.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Get in. It's so funny too. Cause like, like when
- 25:11Speaker 1: we went, we did it. It was, it was like,
- 25:14Speaker 1: cause plus you, you, you, you went by yourself, but
- 25:16Speaker 1: it was a cluster of us. Cause we're all like,
- 25:18Speaker 1: Hey man, all right, let's people carpool. Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:21Speaker 1: So it was like, it was like me, Jack, Jack Asadorian. And, um,
- 25:24Speaker 1: I remember Jordan Conley was there. Uh, there was a
- 25:27Speaker 1: gang of us and then, um, Robert Emoto, uh, and then, um, uh, uh, uh, uh,
- 25:33Speaker 1: Renee Vaca.
- 25:34Speaker 2: He's okay.
- 25:35Speaker 1: He was with us. Okay. And then, uh, we're all,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and he, he got the call back. And I think,
- 25:39Speaker 1: I want to say, I'm not, I can't, I'm not
- 25:40Speaker 1: a hundred percent sure, but I think he, I think
- 25:43Speaker 1: it was, like, the first time that there was, like,
- 25:44Speaker 1: a split win. Like, it was two people won the thing.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Oh, okay, okay.
- 25:49Speaker 1: So I was like, oh, okay. But, no, it was
- 25:52Speaker 1: a gang of us. And it was just, to be honest,
- 25:54Speaker 1: the hang was fun. Yeah. I mean, just the shit talking.
- 25:57Speaker 1: For sure. And that was another thing, too, like, in
- 25:59Speaker 1: that I remember when, because Robert Emoto and Rene got
- 26:03Speaker 1: the calls back. And every, we're all sitting in the,
- 26:05Speaker 1: in that little car and everyone was happy for anybody.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Cause it was like, all right, boom. We're a team.
- 26:09Speaker 2: This is a team in this car. Like we want,
- 26:11Speaker 2: we want each other to win.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Um, this is a good story.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I definitely saw that. I, I, cause I didn't know
- 26:18Speaker 2: a lot of people. I started my career here. So
- 26:21Speaker 2: I've gone to LA a little bit, but I didn't
- 26:23Speaker 2: have like friends, friends at that point. So it's like
- 26:26Speaker 2: a lot of my comedian friends, uh, to this day, uh,
- 26:31Speaker 2: were in cliques of people that carpooled down here from
- 26:34Speaker 2: LA or from Vegas or Phoenix to like do the
- 26:38Speaker 2: showcase and like, no, I live here. I'm going to
- 26:40Speaker 2: go home now.
- 26:42Speaker 1: It was a trip too. Cause like, I mean, it
- 26:44Speaker 1: would be in Seattle and people were, yeah, definitely sleeping outside.
- 26:47Speaker 1: And I'm like, Oh, that's great. Like, yeah, I've been,
- 26:49Speaker 1: you know, I didn't, I didn't get an email. Cause
- 26:51Speaker 1: sometimes you'd be invited or there.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Were industry invites. Like, yeah, I didn't know about any
- 26:55Speaker 2: of that. They're like at the two minute audition and
- 26:58Speaker 2: there's people like, rolling up and i'm like you weren't
- 27:01Speaker 2: here for the one minute what are you doing here
- 27:02Speaker 2: and it's like you're.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Like yeah i gotta i gotta yeah and then it's
- 27:05Speaker 1: like how do you do that exactly i was like
- 27:07Speaker 1: that's crazy like there's oh then then if that's the
- 27:10Speaker 1: case then what am i even doing.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Here yeah i guess you're gonna win if you have
- 27:13Speaker 2: the thing like what yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 1: You already have the shorthand you already know so it's
- 27:17Speaker 1: like why am i even trying this let me just
- 27:18Speaker 1: go yeah i was i there's so it's so funny
- 27:21Speaker 1: because comedy like i i started realizing realizing this too
- 27:24Speaker 1: when i first started uh is was um uh, uh,
- 27:28Speaker 1: comedy just keeps asking me, do you still want to
- 27:30Speaker 1: do this?
- 27:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Like things like that. Like there's, why are you even doing,
- 27:33Speaker 1: there's so many people that are ahead of you. You
- 27:34Speaker 1: still want to do this? Yeah. And it's like, yeah,
- 27:36Speaker 1: I do. Because like, I always justify it for me.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I always justify it because like, because like, I'm, I'm,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'm not doing this for that. I'm doing this for
- 27:43Speaker 1: the result of becoming better. So when I'm on stage,
- 27:45Speaker 1: I get the, I get the reaction that I want
- 27:47Speaker 1: because that's what I like. Yeah. That's what keeps me
- 27:50Speaker 1: coming back. The work. Yeah, the work.
- 27:52Speaker 2: The process.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I love the whole idea when you figure a joke out.
- 27:57Speaker 1: When the jigsaw puzzle, when I just got the corner,
- 27:59Speaker 1: and I'm like, there's something here. I could see it
- 28:01Speaker 1: a little bit. And then it's like, oh, I can't wait.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I can't wait.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that feeling of joke bombing over and over for weeks,
- 28:11Speaker 2: sometimes months. But you know, there's just, I just need
- 28:17Speaker 2: to crack this code.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 28:19Speaker 2: And then I don't know about you, but for me,
- 28:21Speaker 2: it's like on the shows where I'm eating it the
- 28:25Speaker 2: most are the ones where I'm like, all right, well,
- 28:27Speaker 2: this can't get any worse. Let me pull out this bit.
- 28:30Speaker 2: And for some reason on those sets, our brains are
- 28:33Speaker 2: activated and doors are just opening.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:36Speaker 2: And it's on those sets where you find the missing
- 28:38Speaker 2: piece and you're like, and it's the one that cracks
- 28:42Speaker 2: the bad audience for you. And you're like, but you
- 28:45Speaker 2: don't even care about them because you figured out this bit.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:48Speaker 2: And tomorrow I'm gonna get on stage and work from
- 28:51Speaker 2: right here. And it's going to be amazing.
- 28:52Speaker 1: So many doors. And I was like, then you got
- 28:54Speaker 1: another little avenues. You're like, now, you know what? Now
- 28:57Speaker 1: that it works that way, I'm going to put this
- 28:59Speaker 1: right here and that will, and that's, oh my God,
- 29:01Speaker 1: this actually, I wrote this like five years ago.
- 29:05Speaker 2: And now it's a connector. Now I have a chunk
- 29:07Speaker 2: and now I'm just like in this world. And it
- 29:09Speaker 2: seems like this guy's like, how does his brain go
- 29:13Speaker 2: from here to here to here? And it's because I've
- 29:16Speaker 2: put in the time and the work, and it's like,
- 29:19Speaker 2: now I can play.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Yeah. And it's so exciting. It just makes me happy.
- 29:27Speaker 1: And it's like, that's what I get off on. That's
- 29:31Speaker 1: the thing. So when people are like, oh, you haven't
- 29:35Speaker 1: known it this long? I'm sure you probably get this
- 29:38Speaker 1: every now and then from people that don't really know
- 29:39Speaker 1: the or are in the thing. They were like, oh,
- 29:41Speaker 1: you still do that comedy thing?
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah. You still doing your little comedy thing? I hate you.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I hate you so much, dude. I'll murder your family.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Are you still doing that little 9 to 5 job, dude? Yeah.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I hate you. I hate you.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Oh, fuck. Okay, so we're going to move on to
- 30:01Speaker 1: the second segment. And it's just trivia really quick. Sure. Yeah,
- 30:03Speaker 1: it's just that. Just to break up the knotney of
- 30:05Speaker 1: every comic podcast on comics. And then Nikki's going to
- 30:08Speaker 1: help us out with the questions. And you're going to
- 30:10Speaker 1: have first crack at it. And I'll try to get it.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Because I don't even know these either.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I'm one of the worst of all time at trivia.
- 30:17Speaker 2: So here we go.
- 30:17Speaker 1: You know what's funny? All of those comics were not
- 30:19Speaker 1: very good.
- 30:20Speaker 2: It's like I know about what I know about. And
- 30:23Speaker 2: most of it never shows up at trivia night.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, we're really good at bullshitting that we know.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Yeah. All right. What's the category?
- 30:33Speaker 4: I can let you know the categories as well, so
- 30:35Speaker 4: you can have that.
- 30:36Speaker 1: So I guess each question is something different somewhere else? Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 4: So for the first question, it's going to be a movie.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:45Speaker 4: What is the name of a shrimp company owned by
- 30:47Speaker 4: Tom Hanks' character?
- 30:48Speaker 2: Bubba Gump Shrimp.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Nailed it. Softball.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I've traveled around. Those things are in real life, too.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. That's right on. Yeah. All right. Next one.
- 30:58Speaker 2: If you're ever in an exotic place... and you want
- 31:01Speaker 2: to find the Americans that should not be in that
- 31:03Speaker 2: exotic place, just go to the Bubba Gum Shrimp because
- 31:07Speaker 2: that's the U.S. Embassy for people who want to travel
- 31:11Speaker 2: but don't want to travel. Yeah, for real.
- 31:15Speaker 4: Yeah, get real cultured.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:18Speaker 4: So this one's going to be in music.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:20Speaker 3: So what pop star wrote songs for Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus,
- 31:25Speaker 3: Britney Spears, and Alice Cooper?
- 31:26Speaker 2: What pop star?
- 31:30Speaker 1: What pop star wrote.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Is it a man or a woman?
- 31:34Speaker 1: A woman.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Oh.
- 31:36Speaker 4: If you're into the social construct of that. I feel
- 31:47Speaker 4: like this person is not... This person's popular.
- 31:50Speaker 3: But kind of like a subtle level.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:54Speaker 4: More subtle person. But had hits, so.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. I would for sure know this person. Lady Gaga?
- 32:03Speaker 4: In that realm.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I think I know.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Who?
- 32:08Speaker 1: I can't remember her name. But she used to be
- 32:11Speaker 1: married to Melissa Etheridge. No, not her. Linda Perry. That's
- 32:15Speaker 1: what I was thinking. Okay, then I'm... All right, final answers.
- 32:17Speaker 1: All right, I say Linda Perry, but.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Kacey Musgraves.
- 32:20Speaker 4: That was a good guess. It's Kesha.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Kesha. Oh, okay. That's good to know. Yeah.
- 32:27Speaker 4: She's awesome.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Great life. Okay, so... This one is a book slash musical.
- 32:33Speaker 1: I'm out. Here we go.
- 32:35Speaker 4: The Musical Cats is based on which book? Oh, it's
- 32:39Speaker 4: based on a book by which author?
- 32:42Speaker 2: I do not know. Dr. Seuss.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I don't know either. I have no idea on what
- 32:47Speaker 1: that would be.
- 32:49Speaker 4: The answer is T.S.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Eliot. T.S. Eliot. Okay.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I've heard the name.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Okay, so this one has to do with technology.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Cool.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1963, the first computer mouse
- 33:06Speaker 4: was made out of what material?
- 33:09Speaker 3: Oh.
- 33:10Speaker 1: The first computer mouse was made out of what material?
- 33:13Speaker 2: Wood.
- 33:15Speaker 4: That's your answer?
- 33:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 33:16Speaker 1: I'm going to say carpet.
- 33:19Speaker 4: Wonderful guess it actually was wood.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Yeah oh shit that's great good pool i'm just thinking
- 33:25Speaker 2: of like what could be whittled into that kind of
- 33:28Speaker 2: tool you.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Know especially for a prototype.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Right prototype you don't want metal on your desk you know.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Yeah wood wood wood wood that would be cool to
- 33:37Speaker 1: have a wood one now yeah like a straight throw
- 33:40Speaker 1: it like oh look at this.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Guy knows what's up yeah yeah Welcome to my mid-century
- 33:44Speaker 2: modern house. That piece of wood right there, that's actually
- 33:47Speaker 2: a mouse.
- 33:48Speaker 1: That's actually a mouse. Pick it up, look.
- 33:51Speaker 2: You want to know how rich I am? That's my
- 33:54Speaker 2: mouse right there. I got it.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Yeah. All right.
- 33:59Speaker 4: This has to do with a movie.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Which famous line spoken by Chief Martin Brody in Jaws
- 34:07Speaker 3: was entirely ad-libbed?
- 34:11Speaker 2: Oh, I think I know.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 34:13Speaker 2: We're going to need a bigger boat.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I say the same thing. Yeah. Yep. That's it.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Damn. Turns out I am going to trivia.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Yeah. You're killing it. Yeah. You're killing it right now.
- 34:22Speaker 4: It's three to one and you're winning.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Yeah. All right.
- 34:25Speaker 4: And actually, this is kind of funny.
- 34:27Speaker 3: You did speak on it, so I can't even give
- 34:28Speaker 3: you a genre because you're going to be able to
- 34:31Speaker 3: get it, I think.
- 34:32Speaker 4: You spoke about it earlier in your interview with each other.
- 34:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 34:35Speaker 4: What is the best-selling video game franchise?
- 34:38Speaker 2: Oh, the Mario?
- 34:39Speaker 1: No. Yeah, Mario, I would say. Yeah, it's Mario. Yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I was like, darn it, maybe I should change it.
- 34:47Speaker 1: What's your favorite Mario? Yeah. There's so many now.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Mario Kart on Super NES is my favorite.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Okay. Really?
- 34:54Speaker 2: Super NES and or coin flip for the Nintendo 64.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Same here.
- 34:59Speaker 1: That's all I'm going to say, the N64 one. I'm
- 35:01Speaker 1: all about the 64. I'm the Nintendo regular NES generation,
- 35:05Speaker 1: but when the N64 came out, I was like, this
- 35:08Speaker 1: is amazing. Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 2: That's the first console I owned and we're in the
- 35:12Speaker 2: process of moving right now and I found it so
- 35:15Speaker 2: I have it with a good amount of games and
- 35:19Speaker 2: what I need to do now is find either a
- 35:22Speaker 2: HDMI converter or just try to find an old TV
- 35:26Speaker 2: which I think would be cooler I think that's cooler
- 35:28Speaker 2: the old TV in the garage with the N64.
- 35:31Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is like those things are like
- 35:33Speaker 1: they could go for extreme amount like 007 is hella
- 35:36Speaker 1: expensive yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 2: That's my favorite That's the best probably video game of
- 35:41Speaker 2: all time.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Dude, that was so much fun. And then you could
- 35:43Speaker 1: change the hard level. And there was like certain tasks
- 35:47Speaker 1: that you could do to unlock the random shit. And
- 35:50Speaker 1: it's so funny because back in those days, like there's
- 35:52Speaker 1: internet now where you can find the code. But it
- 35:54Speaker 1: was like you had to play that game so much.
- 35:56Speaker 2: To figure it out.
- 35:57Speaker 1: To figure it out. Like just a paintball mode. Like
- 35:59Speaker 1: how did this work? A big head mode?
- 36:01Speaker 4: A big head mode with throwing knives.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Was the best.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I was like... The game was like critical thinking. It
- 36:09Speaker 2: was like almost educational, you know? And we had no idea.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It's so fun, too. Yeah, like the missions were like...
- 36:17Speaker 1: That's one thing that I liked about the games back then.
- 36:20Speaker 1: It's like, you're right, it was difficult. So it's like, dude,
- 36:22Speaker 1: we have to really figure this out. Because we can't
- 36:24Speaker 1: even just gung-ho through it.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:27Speaker 1: We have to wait, be patient, and then... Oh, man. Games. Games.
- 36:31Speaker 4: All right, this one has to do with food.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Okay. Okay.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Which fast food restaurant has the most locations across the
- 36:39Speaker 4: United States?
- 36:40Speaker 2: The United States or the world?
- 36:42Speaker 4: United States.
- 36:44Speaker 1: That one's easy, definitely.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I'm going to say Subway.
- 36:48Speaker 4: And then what's your answer, Carlos?
- 36:49Speaker 1: I'm going to say McDonald's.
- 36:50Speaker 4: It's actually Subway.
- 36:51Speaker 1: It's actually Subway. Oh, that's crazy. Dang, you are going
- 36:59Speaker 1: to say that.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Yeah, look at that. I think you're just picking questions that.
- 37:05Speaker 2: The specific questions I have the answers to.
- 37:07Speaker 1: That's so funny. It's all Slumdog Millionaire. He's going back
- 37:09Speaker 1: to all of his travels. He's like, I see. There's
- 37:12Speaker 1: a lot of subways in Georgia.
- 37:14Speaker 2: That's like a fun fact that I read in the airport.
- 37:19Speaker 1: All right.
- 37:19Speaker 3: This one has to do with sports. What number does
- 37:24Speaker 3: every major league baseball player wear on April 15th?
- 37:27Speaker 1: Oh, I know this one.
- 37:28Speaker 2: I know this one, too.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead. 42.
- 37:30Speaker 2: 42. It's Jackie Robinson Day.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Jackie Robinson.
- 37:32Speaker 4: Yep, you're both right. Dang, I thought that would have
- 37:36Speaker 4: been a left field one. All right, okay. Let's see
- 37:39Speaker 4: what's up. Okay, this one has to do with a movie.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Well, actually TV. What TV series launched Bruce Willis' career?
- 37:48Speaker 2: Oh.
- 37:49Speaker 1: I know this one.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I do not know this one.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I'll give you a hint. It co-starred Sybil Shepard.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Oh, that's right, because you didn't watch the movie. Moonlighting.
- 38:04Speaker 4: It's true.
- 38:05Speaker 1: It's moonlighting.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Noise. On the board.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Finally. I know, right?
- 38:10Speaker 4: It's four to six, so you're still, you're hanging in there.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Okay, and this will be your last question, so you
- 38:17Speaker 3: can wager your points.
- 38:17Speaker 4: You have six points.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 38:20Speaker 3: And Carlos, you have four, and you can wager as
- 38:22Speaker 3: many as you'd like to try to take the win,
- 38:24Speaker 3: but it's going to be a music question.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Music.
- 38:28Speaker 2: I mean, I'm going to just put it all in.
- 38:30Speaker 1: I'll go. I'll match. I'll match. All right.
- 38:32Speaker 4: We're going all in.
- 38:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 38:33Speaker 3: What is the name of the singer and actor Stefani Giramotta,
- 38:40Speaker 3: better known by?
- 38:42Speaker 1: The singer and actor? Yes.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Oh.
- 38:46Speaker 4: I guess you say Stefani Giramotta.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Oh, okay. I know this. I know the name.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Is she....
- 38:57Speaker 1: Huge.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Lady Gaga.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 39:00Speaker 4: It's Lady Gaga.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I was going to be like, you said it earlier.
- 39:03Speaker 2: I was like, I'm pretty sure. Boom.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Golden. Nice. He took the win. Nice with 12 points. Nice.
- 39:09Speaker 1: I think that's the highest score. That's the highest we've
- 39:11Speaker 1: ever had. Congratulations. I'm being honest with you.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Sandbagging is what you're doing. I'm generally not good at trivia.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I know the sports stuff and some technology stuff because
- 39:24Speaker 2: that's my... nerd wheelhouse. I'm into gadgets. But anything pop culture,
- 39:31Speaker 2: I'm kind of on the fringes with.
- 39:35Speaker 1: So I was going to say, where are you going
- 39:36Speaker 1: to be at soon?
- 39:38Speaker 2: So I'll be at... When does this air?
- 39:40Speaker 1: This will probably air in about a month. Okay.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I have no idea where I'm going to be. But
- 39:46Speaker 2: all of my... Dates are on malhall.com, or if you're
- 39:52Speaker 2: a Bands in Town person, go to Bands in Town
- 39:55Speaker 2: and search Malhall and click the bell or whatever, sign
- 40:00Speaker 2: up for the alerts, and I put all my dates
- 40:02Speaker 2: on there. Yeah.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Well, thanks for doing this, man.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Thanks for coming out. Thanks for having me, man.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Great to see you. Good to see you too, man.
