- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Uh it's been it's been wonderful.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Kind of solitary.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: I uh yeah, I've got this like little Airbnb and B in Soho and chilling out and try uh It's been a lot of like passing out because I you know I'm jet-legged.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Well I I was until like this morning.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: What's um Oh wait, yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So you this is the uh like the earliest you've got up so far then?
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Um this is actually the latest I slept was today.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Aaron Ross Powell Oh really?
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I had been waking up like I'd be going to bed at like 1 a.m.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: and then waking up just like wide awake at four.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Um which is actually okay because I uh a lot of American basketball is on at 4 a.m.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: So I'll watch like an hour of basketball live and then try to force myself back to sleep.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: So that's been my schedule up until this morning.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: I mean it's quite nice that you're like you're not on until your show is not on until like nine.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: That's kind of a nice thing about it, but then I suppose it's like what one in the afternoon for you?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Aaron Ross Powell Yeah, who even knows?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I mean I I try not to think about it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: I try not to do the math.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I'll get uh I'll get work emails at midnight.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: You know, and then I have to wait till six p.m.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: to reply to that.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: It's wild.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: It's uh I don't know how anything gets done with Americans here.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Is this your first time in London or have you been here before?
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: I've been here before as like a kid.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Oh you've been wrong.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Um I wasn't able to now you now you're doing all like the proper tourist stuff then.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean I'm I'm my my wife's coming in tomorrow.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: So that's I think then we'll do uh most of that stuff.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: I did go to the Tate yesterday.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Aaron Powell Oh, how'd you find it?
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: I mean all I feel like all modern art museums are the same.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I like I kind of buzzed around, listened to a podcast, and uh and left.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:55unknown: Yeah.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I I I didn't I didn't think much of it, but that that's neither a compliment nor uh you know an insult.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: It's just like yeah, okay, there's the the urinal thing and uh yeah, some Kruegers and some warholes, I get it.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I I can't even tell you the last time I went to the tape.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: I'd like I don't take advantage of anything in London, I feel like.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I bet it was uh did you grow up here?
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I bet it was like when you were eleven, because it was just nothing but eleven years screaming.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: It was just field trip after field trip.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: It was um it was part of the reason why I kind of got out early.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I was just like I can't deal with all these kids.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: It's not even yeah, the worst time to go is like during the half terms when they like they're on break as well.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: That's when that's when you see all the kids there.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Is that like right now?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Aaron Ross Powell, Jr.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think so.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: No, they're not.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So it's like they were all in uniform.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it can be even worse.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was it was wild.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: It was just like I it was a sea of children screaming, and like like if any painting or photograph had like a naked person, it was just like bad luck.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Just everyone like pointing and laughing.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: It's like come on, grow up.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I remember when I was eleven, that was when they first opened the so what's now the O2, but that was Millennium Dome.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And so that that was it wasn't like uh a concert venue or anything back then.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: It was like a um I don't even know what it was.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: It was it was just like almost like a science museum, it felt like really big open dome.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but they they had like loads of different like sex exhibitions and stuff in there.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Was it like a planetarium or something?
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kind of.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: A little bit.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: It was like it was really weird.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: But that was that's what I remember from like that age.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: They they took us all there, and I remember it being so far from where we were.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: That's that's very odd.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: But now it's just a concert venge.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: So what happened to all the exhibits that they just it's I think when the O2 bought it out, uh-huh.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Or like I don't know if it was always supposed to happen, but it was the Millennium Dome for like what a couple of years or something, I feel like, and then they changed it.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Aaron Ross Powell That's funny.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I grew up um in Minnesota and um like my mall, the mall I would say.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, you've got the the Mall America.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was like where I went to get shoes, also happened to have like roller coasters and tourists and yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: And every time I'm back as an adult, it kind of freaks me out because it's just like ingrained.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Like I still know how to get around everywhere.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: I know where all the stores are.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: It's wild.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: How is it true that you could like there's people that live in there or um No, well there are there's there's a few hotels attached to it.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: I don't think anyone lives there.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: There are malls in LA though, um like the Grove and the Americana where people live above the mall, and it's fascinating.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Aaron Ross Powell That's insane.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I could not do that.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're like luxury apartments supposedly.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Luxury.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: They're supposed like supposedly they're like very nice apartments, but it's like you're above like a forever twenty-one.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: It's like what a weird life.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: I don't understand.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Was it like the transition from going from Minnesota to LA then?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Or did you went to New York first?
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I went to school in Boston in New York.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: So like I yeah, I was on the East Coast for a while.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Um and you know, I it sort of seemed inevitable almost that I would end up in LA.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So it wasn't.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: But the biggest shock actually culturally and climate-wise, I so I was born in New Mexico, which is like southwest near Arizona.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Um very dry desert climate.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: And then when I was eleven, moved to Minnesota, which is like Siberia, you know, it's like you know, which on it ironically is uh topical for the movie we're discussing.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it was basically that kind of climate.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: So that was that was the biggest shift for me.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: I I I went to LA.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I haven't been to LA again since I was like a teenager.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: But yeah.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I w I I lived in New York for a little bit.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Oh you did?
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Uh so I lived there, I did like a semester abroad during university.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And so I got to uh what part did you live in?
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Uh Lower East Side.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, okay.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: It was yeah, it was the the dorms were there, so they just like put all the international students in that dorm.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And that we couldn't we had like no choice of where we could stay.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Do you remember what inter I mean, this isn't I guess it's not uh interesting to anyone who uh you don't live in but do you remember like what what air like corner or the intersection?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: It was Lud it was corner of Ludlow and East what was it, East No, not East House.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Ludlow and Delancey.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right there.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: It was like literally that corner.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: They'd just built the building as well.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Or something like that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Yes, okay.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: But it was yeah, I'd loved it there.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: That's a great part of town, obviously.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: I loved the whole of New York as well.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: But then I so I would like go back until the pandemic, I would go back like once a year as well and just like visit friends there and everything.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: That's how I kind of got into comedy and London and I I was saying last night that like London is basically like old, nice New York.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Like it's a very similar vibe to what everyone here just is very just polite and and kind.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: You don't feel like you're gonna get into a fist fight if you bump into someone.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: You definitely I yeah.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: You don't see that at all, really.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: How was your show last night?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Did you have a good time?
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's good.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm it's interesting.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm still trying to figure out.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Um it was funny.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Like I got some I got some notes last night for some.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: No, no, but like everyone's someone gave you notes last night.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Well, I I mentioned that the I I meant I I was doing a joke about how I'm fascinated by the pubs here, the names of pubs, and how old they are.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: And I think I said I I pubs established in 1612, and then a guy was like, well, actually there was a great fire in 1666, so the earliest you would see is 1667, and I was like, all right, yeah.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I would not have even thought of that.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: I mean he seemed like a uh historian of some sort.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: So I was like, alright, I can I can change that.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I'm not offended by that.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I don't think you even need to change it to be honest.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: No, I know.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: It was it was a very it was one of the funnier notes I've ever got.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I didn't how silly of me.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I didn't know the only thing that stood out to me was that 405 bit.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: It's like even that's not that fun.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: You can get away with it.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: I uh I I did I did not do that joke last night.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: So yeah, but I might do it again.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: It's a good joke.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: It's just like Yeah, no, I'm figuring it out.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: I'm figuring it out.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Because then I, you know, it was interesting.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I I I as you know, I mean this this is very inside baseball, inside cricket, I should say.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Uh that uh Yeah, I do this long joke about 9-11 and it's clearly making people uncomfortable.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, oh, maybe this is funnier to Americans because that happened to America.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Even last night, you had the same same reaction last night.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Up until the second half of the joke, which got a big laugh.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: It was just like, oh, like I think I think I'm making people like it's maybe it's it's something else entirely if it feels like you're laughing at another country's trauma or something.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: So basically, like um last month I had a show, I did a show where it was um like a debate thing, like a joke debate thing.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: It was like millennials versus Gen Z.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: And every single person in the show did a joke about 9-11.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, really?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And it like it landed every time.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: So maybe I'm just a maybe it's a bad joke.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: No, it's not a bad joke.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: I'm kidding.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: I don't yeah, I don't know what it is.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: It's just uh Maybe it's just the specific audience.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Or yeah, just I don't know.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: It's just it's culturally, maybe it's just like a a slight difference.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's it's really interesting.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: But I'm I'm having a I'm having a good time.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's been it's been very fun.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: How many more shows have you got?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I'm doing shows until Saturday.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And then you've got like another what, like another week here.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm gonna show up for like a week.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: That's that's a good amount of time.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: We'll explore.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Are you going anywhere else in Europe in that time or in the UK or anything?
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: No.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Well, I think we'll we'll we'll sort of do uh uh some stuff, like a day trip.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Uh uh we were planning on going to Paris, but it seems like Paris is on fire at the moment.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: It's probably not the best week.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: We might just stay um uh in Great Britain.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I mean there's plenty here.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: For a week, I think we can fit in for the stuff.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Um let's let's talk about what you've come here to account for.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Yes, let's get down to business.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Uh talk about, which is Rocky IV.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Which you said to me in the email.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: You said it's my what did you say, my patriotic duty?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's my duty.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: As an American.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: I must.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: I must.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.: This might this might be one of the most patriotic movies I've ever seen.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: It's a real time capsule.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So it came out in 1985.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: It's 38% on Rotten Tomatoes from the from the critics.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: 79% from the audience.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Big difference.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Huge difference.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Um Where what's your kind of like history with it?
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Do you did you grow up with the Rocky movies?
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Did you know?
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: I was like um so my my dad's from Philadelphia.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: And so like the first Rocky is a i for people his age from Philadelphia is a very like important fill.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Um and yes, we had I I yeah, I had all the Rocky movies growing up.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: And I mean I I was in love with Mr.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: T as a kid.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: So like Rocky III is probably like canonically my favorite Clubberling.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: I love Mr.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: T.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Um but Rocky IV was always in the mix.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, I watched it a lot.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: And you know, I was in retrospect, like, oh, Bridget Nielsen, I was uh unbelievably attracted to her, so I'm probably watching that a lot just because of that.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Oh nice.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: There was um weirdly with Bridget Nielsen, there was a do you did you ever hear about the Celebrity Big Brother here?
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: No.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: So they had a celebrity big brother ver like uh here for years.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: They just would run it like ev outside of every season, like the normal ones.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: But they would bring in uh random people.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: She uh she came into the she was in one of the seasons, and then Jackie Stallone came in as well.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Whoa.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: And so it was like the first time they'd seen each other since they like split uh since Stallone had split up with and like they had such a they did not get along.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: They couldn't like commiserate at all.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: They're both like you would seem like, oh well, we both were spurned by Sylvester Still.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you would think so, wouldn't you?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: It was just funny to start that that was that was my introduction to Bridget Nielsen, though, was like that from back then.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Because I wasn't that's interesting.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I bet I mean if if you're on a reality show as it has been, that's probably not the best light to be introduced.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: I mean she came across better than Jackie Stallone.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Good to know.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: She was definitely like, yeah, the better of the two of them.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: It was like, yeah.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: It was insane.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: It was just such a weird moment in TV.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Well, she married Stallone and she had an affair with uh Schwarzenegger.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Like peak, like just peak steroided uh movie stars.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Like she got both of them.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: It's huge, yeah.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: It's well like I I had to look up how old Stallone was in this movie, and he's 39.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And he made, what, four Rocky movies after.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So yeah, just his mid it's just his halfway point.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, like the only thing he hasn't like he's made up to Creed 2, didn't he?
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And then he this is the first the first time he wasn't in it was this year.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Aaron Powell I think you're right.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: And probably because he just had like scheduling conflicts or whatever.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: I bet I bet that's what it was.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, later.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: He was making the Samaritan.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Do you do you like the Creed movies?
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: I've only seen the first one, but I love it.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: The first one was really good.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: The second one was good, but like not as not quite as good as the first one.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: No, I haven't seen the third one yet.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And it's the first one Michael B.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Jordan's directed as well.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Which is interesting.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: I uh I always find it interesting when the actors turn directors.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: You know, it's sometimes it's good.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: It is sometimes good.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, like we're uh having worked with actors, the one that the ones that have been actors since they were kids, like Michael B.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Jordan, like have just been on sets so much.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: They are uh you know often very good directors.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean also Aziz is really good.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: So like I just wanted to bring it up because you're like friends with Jordan.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Like you've worked on stuff with him where he's directed as well.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: So like he's gone from well he didn't he didn't start in directing, did he?
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: No, he did not.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: No, like Master of Nun was like when I think I think that's when he like started directing.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's got a great eye for it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: And it's like it's interesting to see yeah, I just think it's interesting when actors kind of got like shift into it.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I mean he's uh he's an interesting case too, because he's you know a writer as well.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: So I I think if you can do all three, then yeah, you have a good eye.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean writer, director, actor, comedian, uh-huh, everything.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: I'm always yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: That always blows me away when people can do that.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: I mean some that like the thing is like with com comedians now, you kind of have to do that as well.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's just a different time.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, and there's just not as many like comedy movies.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: No, there's no more.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: So like if you want to get one made, it seems like you have to write it and direct it yourself.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: That's so true.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's sad.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: It is sad, yeah.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Uh I was talking with another comedian last night about this though, about like how comedians ha now have to do everything for themselves and have to like even when you're coming up now, it's kind of like you have to make all your own clips, you have to film every set you do.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: You have to find some kind of crowd work in there because that's what the that's the clips that go do well.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: That's yeah, it's it's totally different than when I started.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: It seems exhausting.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, and you're right, because like I I don't post many clips, and and it's also because like I don't do a lot of crowd work.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Or if I do, it's like not worth posting.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's yeah, yeah.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, I would argue that not a lot of crowd work is worth posting anyway.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: I would agree, yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's just like people just have to churn stuff out.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: But now like do you f actually this is something like are you just getting back into stand-up now, or are you have you been doing it for like a little have you have you always like been doing it?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I've always sort of split my time between writing and uh stand-up.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: And then you know the pandemic sort of shifted everything to I was lucky to continue writing during the pandemic.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: But yeah, the past like year or so I've been doing a lot.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Do you notice a shift in it in the w the w the audiences then?
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: Um the only thing I've noticed really is uh uh it became very clear early on that no one wanted to hear anything about when people were getting back out there to every joke, and it was just like people didn't want to hear it.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: So yeah, you know, it was like I always got self-conscious if I didn't perform for over a week or so, I would feel like I'm getting rusty.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So then there was like a giant like 14-month gap, or you know, where I hadn't performed, and I really that really got in my head.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: And it took a while just to like find my s find my sea legs again or whatever the term is, and then um even longer to like remember how to write new material.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: But once like Oh, you were saying you only wrote like one joke during the couple of things.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know it's like a little tongue and cheek.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: But I know.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that uh I mean it's somewhat true.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: It's like I'm not it's I'm not the type of person who can like sit down at a desk and like write material.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I sort of have to like try it out.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: You gotta try it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: You just get you come up with some vague idea and then you try it out on stage and figure out the wording of it.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: That makes yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: That makes more sense, to be honest.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: So that sort of uh so it took a while to like get back into that rhythm.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's I ended up writing a lot of stuff in the last like eight or nine months.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Did you find like more motivation behind it than like knowing you can actually go and perform again?
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's good.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: I mean it's just it's i I like I like doing shows.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Like what I'm doing right now is what I love.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: Like doing a show every night and getting to rearrange things and so much fun, isn't it?
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's great.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: I was doing the only thing I did during the pandemic online was improv, and that was like the worst thing I could do.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Zoom improv.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: That's impossible.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: It was rough.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Because even if like the way Zoom works, you're always like there's a delay and you're you're interrupting things.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was so it was so slow.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: It's hard.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: It was rough.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And then yeah, so we did that and then came back to in-person improv and I was like, I don't ever want to do improv again.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I just like stopped doing improv altogether and just like focused on stand-up.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean that could that could traumatize you probably.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, I was like, I'm actually sick of this.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't do any.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I didn't I was invited to some uh like online stand-up things.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: And I uh I just like know myself enough to like, oh, that's I am not the right person for this for this kind of event.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: I think you would have I think it might probably would have suited you.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: It was I just I would personally you wouldn't.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: I don't want to deal with the how I I know I would feel afterwards.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Well I mean the thing is you could I would anytime I would watch someone online doing stand-up, you could see they were hating.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I did um Do you know Guy Montgomery?
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: I did his spelling bee show.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, I think that was the only like comedy thing I did throughout the pandemic.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: I didn't know he did it online in the U.S.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Before it became like a proper show.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: He was doing like a a a Zoom talk show thing.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: It was really fun.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Oh he's great.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: He rules.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: He's so funny.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, very funny guy.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, okay.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: So like Rocky 4.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Just to go back to the how do we even explain?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: It's in the South Yeah.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Who doesn't know Rocky?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Like everyone knows who Rocky is.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Of course, Italian Stallion.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Italian Stallion.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Uh hero who came from Nothing basically to become champ like world champion.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: His superpower, sort of canonically, is that he can take more punishment than even the most uh brutalized uh boxer.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: He he just can get walloped and he he won't go down.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: So that's sort of like his thing.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And like each each movie he's got like a new uh huge person he has to fight.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And this one happens to be um a guy from Russia who is a USSR.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: USSR, yes, back in back when it was a USSR.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Um he's just about a foot taller than Rocky.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Which means in real life, a per like a normal size person.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Like stuff Sylvester Stallone, I believe, is like 5'3.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Is he?
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's very short, apparently.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: So uh I mean I'm sure Dolph Longren is Yeah, Dolph looks huge in this movie.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: It's an effective It's almost like the uh Lord of the Rings kind of training.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's like the moment when he comes out for the first time into the ring is just huge.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: I mean he's like he is legit huge and it's just amplified by how actually time he is Sylvester's the one.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: He's like yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: So he is the he's this noose guy that wants to But basically the USSR decide that they're gonna get into Professional Boxing.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Professional boxing for the first time.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And Ivan Drago is like um a super soldier boxing project by the USSR government.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: It reminded me of like something out of Street Fighter.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like uh M.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Bison or something.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: I'm sure he was I'm sure M.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Bison was probably based on him.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Probably.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, like literally that first scene where he walks off the plane and he's wearing the like Russian military uniform.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Aaron Ross Powell But like this is this is the height of like the Cold War, is it as well?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Like I'm not hugely familiar with the Cold War.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know how like how much you are, but like you know, yeah.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: I mean I like I was born.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I guess you were like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Um and this is this and like Red Dawn.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: There's like a Red Dawn movies that are like just comically uh American propaganda.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: American propaganda, just like the themes of Cold War uh war games, too.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Um just like the theme is just like you know the potential nuclear war between the two countries.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: It's it's very funny.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: Like uh the amount of American flags in this movie.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: I mean this movie is it's such a time capsule, and it's also such a valuable look into like American psychosis.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: You know, like it is just it's so funny.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Because it's uh it's and it's a perfect um sequel in that it's there's so many notes taken from the first Rocky.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Like literally like just taken from the first one and then just like on steroids.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: I mean like literally the movie's about steroids, and it's like the movie itself is on steroids.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Like it's about steroids, but they never they never once talk about the steroids.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: They show they showed it.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: They show it once, but yeah, they show it once, but they never reference it.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Uh but um yeah, no, it's it's it's it's just it's so jingoistic and obvious propaganda.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: It's like that was the reviews I was looking at when I was reading it.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: It's like jingoistic.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: But what's funny too is that it's just like it's so um it's so bald.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Like there's no subtext.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Like everything about it is just like obvious and just it's just there.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: There's no there's no need for interpretation.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Like literally like from the very beginning, he he's like uh to Apollo to Apollo Creed, he's just like, you're old.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: We're both old.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: It's we can't do it.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And then like Ivan Drago comes out, he's big, he's strong.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: We're not strong.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: You know, it's just like they say that those words.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: I love the thing I loved about that, actually, when you you mentioned that.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: They they do a thing where they one of them will say something and then the other one will repeat the exact same thing back to them.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: It's like you don't need to do this.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: It's we get it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: It's so clear anyway.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: You don't need to be repeating it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: It's truly like a child wrote the screenplay.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's so good.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: It's so funny that he wrote it as well, like considering Yeah.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And it's an Oscar-winning screenplay.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: How do you go from the first Rocky to this?
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Because I think I think it's you're given You're given carte blanche.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, like also, there's no real B story in the movie other than other than Rocky gets a robot.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: Which apparently in the director's cut is cut from the whole like they cut that whole sequence out.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Any reference to the robot is cut out of it.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: This movie you said it was 1985.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Rocky buys uh It's insane! It's the most insane that is so sophisticated, like you couldn't get a robot like that now in 2023.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: It's like a a truly sentient AI robot made helper that then they like it's clearly like an attempt at like a runner, like a comedy story.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: But like it's just really strange.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: And it comes at really awkward moments.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Really awkward moments, and like then the final beat of it is that Polly uh I guess somehow changed the like got in there and reprogrammed the robot to be like a sex robot.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Like it has like a sexy voice and it's like she loves me.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: It's like so odd.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Really weird.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: And like, do you know how it came about that it's in the movie?
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: I I would assume just there were a lot of robot movies at the time.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Like Short Circuit was around then.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Like maybe it was just like So I thought that too.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: I thought that was the reason.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Apparently, Sylvester Stallone was at a party, they had a robot there, he saw that robot, and he was like, that would be good to put in the movie.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: So I put that robot in the robot.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what it felt like.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Just like he was yeah, he's just like weird, um, you know, like yeah, it just he that's exactly what it is.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: He's like, oh, what's the what's the coolest thing a rich person in 1985 can have?
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: And it's like a robot helper.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: It's so shit as well.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's kind of sassy.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: It's so weird.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: It it comes it comes in during like he gets it for Paulie during his birthday.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: For his birthday present.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: And there's like a really sentimental moment, and then they bring in the robot.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: And the robot like will like was there's one scene where he's playing music.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: And then they tell the robot to leave, and it and as he's leaving, like the music is just such a tremendously it's just like just agonizingly slow fade out.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: As he's you know, uh no longer even on camera, but to like give the sense that he he's he's like rolling away just this music.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: And that's like a theme throughout the movies.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: There's so much music and the fade outs, it's just something I noticed.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: It's just like it takes so long for Sylvester Stallone as a director to like fade out the music.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: It was driving me crazy.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's really bad.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: And do do you also know about like did you notice how many montages were in this movie?
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Of course I did.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: I mean the movie is is 90 minutes, and I would say, what, 40 minutes is are just montage?
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: So someone actually did the math on this, and it's 30% of the movie is a montage.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: I that that checks out.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that's 30 minutes.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Which 30 minutes in a 90-minute movie is montage.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And like I re like as a child, that's kind of all I remember from the movie is the montage.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: And like watching it again, it's so funny because it's it he gets to Russia, and then there's a montage, and then Adrian comes and they hug, and then it goes back to a second long montage, like identical montage.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: I I wrote it down because it was two minutes after it was like I looked it up, two minutes between them.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: So funny.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: It's so good.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: Um and there's no uh again, just like there's no nuance to it.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah literally, it's like Rocky is stuck in a barn and Drago has of his own choosing.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Yes, a barn of his own choosing, and Drago has like a membership to Equinox.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: You know, that's like and like they're doing identical workouts.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: It's a Drago's got like um machinery and you know, and uh Rocky's like pulling horses and pulling his entire family on a car.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: And and like splitting logs.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: And it's just like wait, we're naming four examples, and this is it's like 38 examples of similar workouts.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Just one's fancy, one's not fancy.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: It's it's uh it's amazing.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: It's so this movie is so funny.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Like the I I want to talk about like the beginning of it where it opens and how uh the opening thing of like Apollo Creed is the one that wants to fight Drago.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Uh because and they want to fight in an exhibition match because like he doesn't have a title or anything.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: And Apollo Creed hasn't fought in five years or anything.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: But he's so arrogant about it and he's so like certain that he will beat the the Russian.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: You know what's funny is that the that first fight scene, which again is identical to Rocky I, where he's wearing the Uncle Sam outfit, but ridiculous.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Ridiculous.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Uh is or could have been a sort of um interesting critique of American excellence.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, right.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: I think that's was what it was an attempt at doing.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: You know, and by the way, kind of not necessarily a montage, but they play a full James Brown song with James Brown.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: It rules.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Like that's that might be the best scene in the movie.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: Honestly, because the song is awesome.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, living in America.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: And then it's just like uh Apollo Creed like dancing with James Brown.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: It's so dancing is it's wild.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: And so like that that show of excess like really um makes Drago mad.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: It it you know it's not it's sort of clunky.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Like you can't tell at first if Drago's really there just uh to do an exhibition fight and then gets mad at James Brown.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you call it.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: You can't tell.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: Or if he was there from the start like ready to kill his opponent.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Um but in any case, it seems like a critique of American excess or American culture, and then the rest of the movie is just like America rocks.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: We're gonna destroy the red menace.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: But also it'll I forgot how long the the like the flashback, not flashback, but like the it shows Rocky III and what what led up to this moment.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: More movies should do this.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: More sequels should start with the last eight minutes of the previous movie.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: So there's that on top of all the montages.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: I was actually while thinking, I was like, I wonder how much they had to pay Mr.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: T.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's essentially the first thing that you see in the movie is Mr.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: T.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: It's a whole it's a very long scene.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: So he I hope he got paid.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: I would hope so.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: So I mean, just I can't help like having worked in TV and stuff now, it's like I literally was like, I wonder what the screen actors' guild demands are for something like that.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: You know, there has been a scale.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, truly, I or yeah, it's yeah, very funny.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: But yeah, he they the first the first at least five minutes of the movie are just the last five minutes from the previous movie.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: And then similarly, uh when Rocky uh spoiler alert, Apollo Creed dies, Drago kills him.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: It's pretty like it's pretty intense.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: It's intense and like starts twitching on the floor.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fully Rocky's fault.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: He says don't throw in the towel, but it's like your friends get like clearly getting murdered, and you just start standing there because you because you you know that the own the only way to win a fight is to take uh you know an inhuman amount of punishment.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: He's always like, he'll he'll live through this.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: He dies.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: And then Rocky's like um feels the guilt of it, he's racked by guilt, and um decides he's gonna fight Drago himself, but before he makes that decision, he's driving in his Lamborghini and a montage montage of just six minutes of flashbacks from all three previous movies of just him thinking about his wife, thinking about Polly, thinking about his old trainer, you know, just like thinking about running up the steps.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: So yeah, so like uh but but my point is that like the the the James Brown scene is just identical to how Apollo Creed comes out in Rocky I.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: And when he's training in Russia in Siberia, um instead of running up a stack of stairs, he runs up a mountain.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: A full mountain.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: He does the same like a bear crawl up the mountain.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: He does a bear crawl up the mountain, a full mountain, and screams.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: While Drago is going on the like the biggest incline of a treadmill I've ever seen in my life.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, right.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: I mean the again, another example of like you know, going back and forth.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: He runs up a mountain and Drago's at like a 65% incline.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: You just hit Drago scream as well.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: It looks like it will break any second.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: It it's just like, it can't take any more.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: Put it higher.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: You're gonna break the treadmill.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Like that was the sort of tension in that scene.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't think the treadmill can go any higher except the last click.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: Um I'm just noticing now, I I'm I'm looking at the trivia for it, and it says that um James Brown, when he sung this, it was the first uh so it was released as a single for the soundtrack, and it became his first top 40 single in 11 years.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that checks out.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Do you think so?
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, I mean 85 was pretty late in his career.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: I guess so, yeah.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: I always thought I always think of like James Brown as being like continuous through the 80s as well.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Like 70s and 80s.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: But also like that song is so 80s.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: I that's not like a lot of sound, probably I mean, like a James Brown song wouldn't have made the Billboard charts until you had like that synthesizer.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: And I like it's one of the few James Brown songs I might I love James Brown.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Like he doesn't have backup singers like that.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: So it's it's like it was a very sort of strange James Brown song.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: It's a really weird one.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: But song rules, that scene rules, it's a show girl.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: It's such a good singer.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Also, like there's so much going on in that scene because Rocky's worried uh that Apollo's gonna get hurt, and we know this because in the previous scene, he goes, I think you're gonna get hurt, and Apollo Creed says, I'm not gonna get hurt.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: So that's that was the writing for that previous scene.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: And so like Rocky, we're we're sort of reading his face.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: It's all Stallone face acting.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: So she like Stallone looks worried, Stallone's a bit embarrassed by the the yeah, how Apollo Creed is coming out and silly dances he's doing.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: But then also there are show girls, so he and Polly keep getting distracted by like women's butts and stuff.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: So it's just like just it's it's a it's just overload.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: It's so much going on.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: And Drago like rises into the stage as well.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: And he's just like he's looking, he's looking around at everything.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: He's just like, what the hell is this?
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: I yeah, also this uh the set dressing for that scene is very odd.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: Like Polycree comes out um what looks like some sort of satanic statue.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: It's like a goat head, but then like a transformer breaks down.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: And on top of all the American flags and glitter and pomp, there's also a satanic goat head thing that they never explain.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And then Polly grabs like a skull with a crown on it, and he's on a long pole.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: So like the whole scene, Polly's holding like a decapitated head.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: And they don't like I just like they don't address it because it's like, well, what it what does that have to do with this very obvious, like patriotic stuff?
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would love I would love to have been a part of that like tone meeting with Sylvester Salone and and like you know, the props department.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: We're gonna need a million flags.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Also, I need I'm gonna need you to build a sort of hydraulic Satan goat head.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Don't worry.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: I just I think it makes it.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: It will make sense.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: You'll understand it when you see it.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: It'll make sense.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: It fits in with the theme.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: It's uh God, that's that's that's probably the best scene in the movie.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: It it is the best scene.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think the movie sort of given the montage.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: The montage is like the most famous part of it.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: I think that's like the most memorable thing.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: But um yeah, though that I mean I just what a what a great uh opportunity for James Brown.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: I was so happy for him.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: He got to do a full song, yeah.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: And then you know, he famously would always get covered with a robe at the end of his set, but they covered him in an American flag.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: That was I mean, that's like you that was Sylvester Stallone directing, he that he was at the peak of his powers right there.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can do whatever you wanted.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: He um also like there was something where did I say this?
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: It was it was something about how James Brown um he was supposed to do like uh he was supposed to like mime it obviously like for the scene or whatever.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: He just sang.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: He sang it.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's not gonna sing it.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: He sang the whole thing.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: That's why you see the whole thing.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Aaron Powell Yeah.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: Because there's like nowhere that you have You're not gonna tell James Brown what to do.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: That's why the whole song is in it.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Also, the for the whole song's in it, because like I bet the first cut came in at like 72 minutes, and they're like, okay, well, let's just put a full six-minute song in.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: There's a whole hour of footage that's cut from this.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: So like that's but I think it's like an hour of stuff where that like that didn't work.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: So that's why it's like so many montages in this.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, that that checks.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: I think it's just like filling everything that didn't happen.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's so funny.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's so funny because it's it's nothing happens.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: Like, what are we missing?
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: There like there ha because also nothing happens, and also there's some something going on.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: Like Bridget Nelson's character like is so one-dimensional.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: She has nothing.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: She has nothing, but like she's in every scene that Drago's in.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: She has weird interactions with Adrian.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: So like that like that must have been what was taken out.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Like some sort of Adrian uh Mrs.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Drago story, because it's like nothing, like he he's just in Russia for half the movie.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: She has about four lines.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: She has four lines and like he's just in a barn working out.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: Like there's nothing else is going on.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: It's it's so funny.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: I I really want to know what was caught.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's wild.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Early drafts of the script had Mr.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: T reprise pr reprising his role.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: Wow, okay.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: I I want to see that.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: That's all I want.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Bring back Mr.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: T.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: I mean that would have been Why would you have not brought back Mr.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: T as well?
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: That's the other thing.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: Like he was such a popular character.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: I wonder I wonder if that's so oh god, I need to know what Mr.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: T's role would have been in that movie.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: I wonder if he was the first one to do the exhibition fight.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Everything's an exhibition fight in this movie, too.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: There's no real mistakes.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: T was what, the height of his popularity here as well?
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe when he was on the 18 as well.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's probably it.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: And also I have a feeling that he didn't want to do a repeat of one and two where it was just with Apollo.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what a br it's man.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: I did also read that he this was intended to be the last one.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: Which if it like I mean, that logically makes sense, because it's just like it's so cartoonishly the end of the story.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's like nothing there's nowhere you I mean, you learn there is places you can go.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: The plot of Rocky V now.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: It's the one with his son uh Rocky Jr.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: Rocky Jr.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Who is in this is very annoying.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: He's so annoying.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: And uh no there's no chemistry.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: He really makes an attempt to uh sort of shoehorn a father-son story in but it's literally just like uh you gotta use your brain.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: I don't have a brain.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm stupid, I want you to be smart.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I gotta I gotta go to Russia because uh it's just something I have to do.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: And then he wins the fight and he's like, Merry Christmas, son.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: He's the kids watching.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: I I another thing I was thinking is like it's uh this is like a pet peeve of mine in movies and television, but it's uh it's obviously evening in Moscow or St.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Petersburg or wherever the hell they're fighting.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: But it's also nighttime in Los Angeles where it's and it's like it can't like No, you're right.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: It can't be like it's it would have changed nothing for his son and friends.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: It would actually make more sense to watch it in the daytime.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, because it's weird.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: Who's letting their kid have a sleepover on Christmas?
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: It's crazy.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, anyway, uh the the fact that both both said it's sometimes it makes me crazy.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: So stupid.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: The kid sucks.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Terrible actor.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: The kid Yeah, the kid's a terrible actor.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: And yeah, all he does is well, he talks to Rocky occasionally and then he and then he interacts with the robot.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Interacts with a robot.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: There is a there's uh there's a there's a scene where Rocky is like waxing his car or washing his car, and his son sort of um attempting to like be like his dad is like waxing the robot.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: And the robot's playing music, and then Rocky tells his son to turn the music down, and the way he turns his music down, like the volume knob is like where a robot's dick would be.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: So it looks like the kid starts like jacking off this robot to turn the volume down.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: It's like it's Oh, I missed that.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: I've got to go back and watch that.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: I missed that completely.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: And then the phone rings.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the phone rings.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: This is like again, like the technology this robot seems to exhibit is light years ahead of Yeah, it's not a thing.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: Like the Rocky gets a call from Apollo Creed, um, I imagine on a landline, because it's like cell phones don't exist yet.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: And then the robot's like, you can take it uh out here, you can use my phone, and he picks up the phone on the robot, but so it's like, wait, so the robot has a landline attached, but it's wireless.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Like everything about it is like this this technology didn't exist yet.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: And also, if you're gonna do that, just just have Apollo come out of the speaker.
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, I have a speakerphone.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: The robot can talk, but doesn't have a speakerphone.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: That's so true.
- 47:19SPEAKER_01: I have some notes about this robot.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: I can't believe they put a robot in this movie.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: It's just it it that's what I'm talking about.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: The time capsule element of this, it's just like the most Cold War cartoon.
- 47:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: And then also like clearly Hollywood was just obsessed with like robots, like robot friends.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: There's like 12 movies like that.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: And so he like you just put that in, and it's it's a mess.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: It's a mess.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: Like I understand why critically it's at 39%, but it's like it's such a mess, and I maybe it's just out of like pure sentimentality, but I love it.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: I still even going back and watching it, uh I watched it yesterday again for the first time in probably like a decade.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: I still had so much fun.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: It's that's the thing.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: It's like the it's so on the nose, but it's like j like you've got it has to be over fifty.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: Just the James Brown scene.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: The James Brown scene.
- 48:19SPEAKER_01: You've got to give it a fresh tomato.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Get out of here.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: It's it's so funny.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: Also, the Russians.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, like Ivan Drago has like three lines.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Bridget Nelson has like four, like you said.
- 48:31SPEAKER_01: I will break you.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: They're both obvious Scandinavians.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: Like they don't get Russian act.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: They don't.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: Like Bridget Nelson can't even attempt a Russian accent.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: It's she's just fully doing a Danish voice.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: And so clearly cast because he wants to be a very good thing.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: They were married, I believe, when this movie.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: No, they I think they got together after this movie.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: And then they got married like a couple of years later or something.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: Well they got they clearly got together during those movies.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: It's what did I write down about it?
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: It's like it's I just wrote about Lamont.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: I wrote the montages.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: It's Rocky Drives to Montage of Past movies.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: It adds nothing.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it yeah.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: It adds time.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Which I think they needed.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: I can't believe I also can't believe he's so willing to go and fight after his friend has just died.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: It's like almost immediate he goes through.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: It's immediate.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Also, he's like, uh fighting for zero dollars.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: This is just for pride.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: And Paul's like, what?
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: Like he didn't even counsel anyone.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: He's just like, I'm going, I'm going to Russia.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Also, like that part is crazy too, where it's like he's so willing to go to Russia when I would imagine in real life, sort of a non-robot universe of the like that you would have found a neutral place to fight.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: That would make the most sense.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: But no, he's gonna he's gonna go and train in Siberia.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: Do you know where it was filmed?
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: Uh Canada, I would guess.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: Wyoming.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: Wyoming.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, close.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: Wyoming.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: Huh.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Jackson's cool.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe that's where uh Kanye's compound is.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Maybe Kanye bought the.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: That's nuts.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: So you I want Yeah, so that was just the the training scene, I would imagine.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: It it says yeah, the training stuff.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: But like none of them.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: I want to know where the the Russians in in America, I think.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: Um and then Vancouver.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: The fights were filmed in Vancouver.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: Everything else.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: Also the um And then everything else is California.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: The stage that the first scene, the first fight scene.
- 51:10SPEAKER_01: It's so bizarre too, because it's like an amphitheater.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: Like so the crowd could only half the crowd could see the fight.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: There is nothing behind them, which is just like not how any boxing match has ever been done.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: It's just, yeah, it's so funny.
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: I saw um I saw a video the other day of like, I think it was a Taylor Swift concert, but like people spent like$100 and they were behind the thing and they could not see.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're obstructed.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: Like it was behind the stage.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: And they could not see they couldn't see a thing, but they spent$100 to see the stage.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: I saw Fleetwood Mac once and we were not fully behind them, but like so profile view that it was like it was not it was not like a great uh experience.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: Oh God.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: I'd be so pissed off.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: Although it was like if it's Fleetwood Mac, I would probably be able to do that.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: It was fine.
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: It was just also just uh The fact you're getting to see them.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: That was cool.
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: And but it was like a lot of boomers all around us uh sort of yelling at people to sit down.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: Like they were like, like, sit down.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: I can't see.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: Like it's like, well, it's a concert.
- 52:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: You can't see anyway.
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: They were like, my knees hurt.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: Sit down.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: It's like we it was like literally like there seemed to be an email in advance that they were like, we will stand up for these three songs and these three songs, otherwise everyone must sit.
- 52:49SPEAKER_00: I'm also reading that Dolph, Londron, and Carl Weathers didn't actually get along during this, and they actually got into a proper fight.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 52:57SPEAKER_00: So when when he throws him against the ropes, that's like real.
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: That was real.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: And they're there to like cut for a couple of days or something.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: Just use it.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: You're fighting.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: Just go for it.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: You're fighting, and your character's gonna die anyway.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: Just let him fight.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: So Langdrim was gonna quit the movie.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: So this must have been real.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: And then 8,000 people auditioned for the role.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Ivan Drago.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: That is amazing casting.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: Like he is so perfect.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: He's so massive.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: He's got like a he's like incredibly smart in real life, you know.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: Yes, he's like a genius.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: He's got like what a PhD as well.
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: It's so polar opposite in this movie.
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: A guy who can only grunt like, I kill you.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: Apparently that was his choice.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: Like to be stoic because of like the way the previous villains had been.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: He wanted to be like the stoic one to make it different.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: And so like that's why he doesn't say much.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: He's a genius.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: That's a really clever thing.
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: It says Arnold Schwarzenegger trained him.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 54:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:16SPEAKER_00: Huh.
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: Which is interesting, given what happened with Bridget Nilsson.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so like basically it ends in the same way that we like most of the Rockies end.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: He ends up fighting Ivan Drago, he wins.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: He triumphs, yeah.
- 54:36SPEAKER_00: After the beaten today.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: Is it 15 rounds or is it 12 rounds?
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is 15.
- 54:41SPEAKER_00: Because it's the final round he wins.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: It's like the final moment.
- 54:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he he just gets punched in the face four hundred times.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: It's so intense.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: And then um finds an opening right at the end to um hit him in those abs over and over again until he collapses.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:04SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, he can that's the only place he can reach is the abs.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's he's so much smaller.
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: Like I don't think I'll be.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: He's like jumping up to do anything.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: It's this fight.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: This kind of fight would never happen.
- 55:17unknown: No.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: Although I would I would love to see it.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: I'd love to see it now.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:23SPEAKER_00: The two of them.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: I I I love Carlweathers in this movie as well.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: Carlweathers is a is a treasure.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: It's a shame that they killed him off in this.
- 55:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but Sylvester Sloan regrets it.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: I'm sure, because he thought this was the last one.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: It's the only reason they did it.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: He also stated that um so this is interesting.
- 55:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you know this about um Ivan Drago, though.
- 55:47SPEAKER_00: He's in Creed II.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: Aaron Powell Oh, I did not know that.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's in Creed II.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: Uh because Creed Creed fights his son.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, fights his son.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the plot of the movie.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, guy.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna watch it tonight.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's fun.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: So but originally Sylvester Sloan stated that uh what happens to Ivan Drago after this is he it's so it's so intense.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: He goes he said he went back to uh uh Russia in shame and then killed himself.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: Whoa, okay.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: That's just like what he imagined happened to the character.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: It's it wasn't like written into the But's like that Wow.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: I mean I'm glad he came back with Kree 2.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: But I also think that like it is just there's so much wish fulfillment in this movie and also just like a lot of just assumptions about the Soviet Union.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think I think a man just full of shame killing himself uh is what what what Americans imagine would happen if you lived in a Soviet country.
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: You know, that like you just if you're not if you don't win, then you're toast.
- 57:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: It's like it's almost touching on I don't know if you want to talk about your joke that you caught.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: Which was the the the Russian joke that you had in your own.
- 57:13SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 57:13SPEAKER_00: I mean Russia is like I just it it really made me laugh.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean the joke is just that like uh I just I there there's just like this sort of pathological fear of Russia in America, and it it makes me laugh because it's just like it's so obviously like the wackest country on earth.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Like they got nothing.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: They got nothing.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: There's nothing to be scared of.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: I know they have got they've got missiles, but to me, the scariest thing about Russia's uh arsenal of missiles is that like Russia has to uh do the upkeep.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like at like at any point all these bombs will just explode because like they're not taking care of them.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: I'm not scared of them like deploying mu uh any sort of missiles.
- 58:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, maybe this is like you know, I'm I'm testing fate right now, but I just like Yeah, Putin's a notoriously big fan of this, so he's like gonna hear this.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh he's a failure, but um yeah.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Uh I double dare you, dog.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: I'm huge in Russia.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I bet.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's cool.
- 58:22SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of Russians in London, right?
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: Like they they buy a lot of like real estate.
- 58:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess they buy a lot of it, but they don't really live in the U.S.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: No, they it's all just laundering most of the things.
- 58:31SPEAKER_00: It's more so in New York, I'd say.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Like there's like a hilarious sky.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's like all these high-rise skyscrapers, and all of them are like per they all the real estate's purchased by Russians who don't live there.
- 58:45SPEAKER_00: But isn't there in like there's an area in Brooklyn that's like lots of Russians, isn't it?
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, Brighton Beach.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: That's like those are like r like like Russian immigrants.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: I'm talking about oligarchs buying.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the oligarchs are.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's all in um like Chelsea here.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: That sort of area.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: Aaron Ross Powell, Jr.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: They've bought everything.
- 59:11SPEAKER_00: And and and um uh people from Dubai as well.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 59:17SPEAKER_00: That's like the two.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: And those are your two fan bases.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, cool.
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, so we've cut we've we've kind of talked through the movie.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Um God, I've just noticed this bit of trivia that says Assuming he was living lifting standard plates, he presses a 455 pounds.
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: Who, drago?
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the yeah, the punch the punch that he does is like triple the triple the p the PSI.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: Uh also he he does he lifts that much.
- 59:57SPEAKER_01: And then they cut to Rocky, who is doing the same with three human beings, which I imagine is more.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: That's gotta be more.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: That's gotta be more.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: That's like, yeah.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_00: One of them's Pauly.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: And then um when he's dragging Paulie in a sled with rocks on it, uh like it's just like you would you would you're you'd just destroy your back.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: Like you're not nobody can do that.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: It's like a strongman competition.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: It's yeah.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like you're you're I'm you're only impressed, like you just honestly, you're kind of like, well, Drago's doing it right, because at least like he's focusing on specific muscle groups.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_01: He's not just like like doing insane uh calisthenics in the snow or whatever.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: So it's like tough.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: Um have you got anything else you uh to say about this movie like uh that we haven't talked about?
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: No, I mean honestly there's not a whole lot to it.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: It's a very it's a very simple movie.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: Um I guess it's just like it's it's a funny time period just because uh it's right before the USSR collapses.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: And it's right like this is the last time America had any like seeming competition or threat, yeah, right, uh until now.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: So it's like this is a real a real moment in time.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_01: Cause I feel like the it's 10 years before like America's peak.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: Like America's peak was like when I was like 15.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: It's like the Clinton years.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, the Clinton years, like late 90s, and it's all been downhill since.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: But like that's how that's how time works, right?
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_01: Um so it is funny because there is some like fear and paranoia that obviously comes through in this movie.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's a lot of paranoia in this movie, yeah.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then like and then nothing happens, the Cold War ends, and then we just coast for a while, and everything's gravy.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: And and now it's like I'm sure there's gonna be movies like this soon with China.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, definitely.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: But what's interesting is maybe there won't, because Hollywood's so dependent on the Chinese market.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: So maybe it'll never Yeah, maybe they won't be able to do that.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, interesting.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: They won't be allowed to.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: It's not like I I wonder if like if if American movies were allowed in Soviet Russia, Rocky Ford wouldn't have.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: No, it would not.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: It wouldn't be.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: But China's like the threat now.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: It will be interesting to see what they how they go about that then.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've heard I've heard stories of movies getting like completely rewritten so that uh they can still be released in China.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know that as well.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've heard that.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of stuff, there's there's entire sections of movies that are cut out for the Chinese releases.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: Sure, yeah.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then storylines and themes and stuff.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_00: The one thing I love is that Marvel doesn't do well there.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_00: It's really funny to me.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_00: It's like for some reason, like Marvel just does not do well.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_00: Just for no reason whatsoever.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: But then like Avatar crushes.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: That makes no sense.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: I don't maybe I maybe just like superhero stuff just doesn't mat like doesn't resonate at all.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: That is interesting.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: Or they're offended by Captain America.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: Could be.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_00: That very quick.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_00: Actually could be one of the reasons.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, so yeah, you talked about why how much you've loved it and everything.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_00: I think you've kind of gone over I think we've covered much of the thing.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: I think we covered it.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, again, there's not much there.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_00: It might be the movie with the least of anything to talk about, of any plot that I've done on this.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: There's zero plot.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: His friend dies.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_00: His friend dies, he fights.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: He fights.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: He wins the end.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Um there's like no moment where you think like, oh, he's gonna lose this fight.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: Oh no, you never think he's gonna lose.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: They don't even attempt it.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: Since the second, you never think he's gonna lose a fight.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_01: It just like it gets it like the franchise.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_01: This is the franchise at its silliest for sure.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: It's not the worst movie, but it's it's it's the silliest one.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_01: It's I I fully agree with that.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_00: In fact, I would put it I don't know.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe the third best movie?
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_01: So it's uh I would do three.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: That's actually the that's that's my password for 314 526.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't know.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, I don't know.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: I I sort of got lost.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: No, two is good.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_00: But it's just not that memorable.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: It's just like, oh, let's win it.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: Let's let him win this one.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: It's basically the same as the first, but he wins.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_00: But there's nothing poetic about it.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_00: What do you think happens in Crete?
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_00: Well, you haven't seen Crete II.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, is Crete III is.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: Is Jonathan Major's character?
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_00: Like, is he some sort of He's his old best He's not like we don't know him beforehand, but like I think the plot is that he's his Like childhood best friend who got arrested and went to prison.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_00: Uh and then saw the success that he had.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_00: I think it Do you know, I think it might be the scene Do you know in the beginning of the first of of Creed 1 where they're like in the juvenile juvenile detention sort of thing?
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: I think it's like the friend from that, maybe.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I have no I have no context.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_01: I couldn't tell you how No, no.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: I But I mean make movies like Rocky Four just don't get made anymore.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: Like I you watch this and you're like, oh there there was no like Sylvester Stallone had so much leverage, so much capital.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: Like they just let him do whatever he wanted.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: And it's just like there's so little influence or like notes given.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_01: Like it's just it's it's wild.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: It's it's it could not like it's pure like uh 80s money, I think.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: Like that you just don't you don't get that from studios these days.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_00: Well, you do, but you you don't get you'd get the inter interference these days where you don't whereas you wouldn't back then.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: Was it a massive success?
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_00: It was the biggest uh Rocky movie that checks out.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: Up until that point.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_00: Yes, of course.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: Because it's just like it didn't matter what the m what's going on because it just was USA versus Russia.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: Like that's all that's all you needed.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_01: Like the easiest greenlit movie ever.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, Rocky's gonna fight uh Russian super soldier, let's do it.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_00: I think it was like the biz biggest one until Creed, I think.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_01: I wonder, even with uh But counting inflation, I bet it's still the biggest.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: Probably.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, probably.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: Which is insane.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_01: It's so good.
- 1:07:55unknown: Yeah.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: It's like so perfect.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_01: Because like Rocky, the first Rocky is like a legit good movie.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_01: It's a really good Yeah, it's genuinely well made, isn't it?
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_01: Uh but this is just like it's This is just fun.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_01: It's just so perfect that like this is the one that had the most uh you know success.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_00: I mean people wanted to go to see what came after Rocky III.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: And I've I mean I haven't seen the trailer, but people were like, oh man, what's going on in that barn?
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen Yeah, those are crazy sites.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: The trailer is just the montage of the old stuff.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_00: A montage of a montage of a montage, yeah.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's move on to um the last two sections then, which is uh they're both quite quite brief.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: Um so do you have a movie that's uh well reviewed and well loved by critics that you actually think is a bad movie?
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_00: Um you can answer this like you can be careful with it and everything.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_00: You don't have to.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, I do stand up about the movie Garden State, which I think is uh is that c do you know the rating for Garden State?
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_01: Aaron Ross Powell That's that's quite high, I think.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_00: I can pull it up quickly now.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_00: It's it's pretty high.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just definitely a a like a positive review.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: I that movie like broke my brain when it came out.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: Like What do you think is rated just about it?
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_01: Let's say 83.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: 86.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, okay.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_01: Certified fresh.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_01: Certified fresh, yeah.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_01: 88 audience.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: Oof.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: I just like I had there are times in your life that you just something's like crazy making.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: Where I came out of that that movie being like, that was the worst thing I've ever seen.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_01: And then just like everyone I talked to just was like, oh, it was cute, it was good.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_01: You know, I just I was just like, I felt like I was on another planet.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: No, I was 15 and I was like fully on board with it.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: And then I watched it like in my twenties.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_00: And I was like, this is terrible.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_00: Is it not a good movie?
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's not.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_01: And it's like and it's also like so derivative.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_01: I just like, I couldn't, I could not deal.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: Um so that's sort of like my go-to answer.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: I feel like it's safe to say, because I I do lots of stand-up about that movie.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_01: Um and then another one quickly uh is La La Land.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_00: But the Can I tell you something?
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_00: The most picked movie on this podcast for that, it gets picked probably like once every five every single day.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_01: Really, yeah.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_01: But in all honesty, I so like I get screeners.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: And so I also have the screener.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_01: I got the screener, so I get you get a little DVD in the middle and I put it in.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_01: And um the first scene of La La Land is like people on the on-ramp of a of a freeway in LA.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_01: And they're like, Is that the 405?
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_01: That is the 405, yes.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: And uh they are stuck in traffic, and then everyone like gets out of their car and starts dancing and singing.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_01: And I remember just go getting up and being like, Nope.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_01: I went and like took the TV out.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_01: So I like have not seen any of the movies.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, you haven't you've only seen that scene.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I was just like, That's the best scene in the movie.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_01: I was like, I'm out.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_01: Like that's the best scene.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_01: I was just like, absolutely not.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not doing this.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_01: So I didn't see a single moment with Gosling.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_00: Like, I was just like, this is Gosling and his jazz, his love of jazz.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I've the white man saving jazz.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_01: I've heard about that.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_01: I've heard about him being like the white savior of jazz.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_01: Like, like I couldn't even get there.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_00: I was just like, this is you would like if you don't even like that scene, you would hate the rest of it.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_01: I just so I like I it felt like I was like a medium or something.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: I was like, I I see myself watching the rest of the movie, and I don't want to live in that reality.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: It's like I'm out.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so that that that makes sense.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_00: That's like the go-to, because it's just like it's so col I can't tell you how much that comes up.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: It's so funny that everyone now hates it.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_01: It's um yeah, and that that was like one of the few times like like awards are so stupid for you know television movies.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's so meaningless.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_01: That was like the one time that like it felt like there was justice in the having that movie win and then taken away and given to the like correct, quote unquote correct movie was like so profound.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was like it was like something shifted in the universe or something.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_00: It was it was that was a that was one of the great I had a bet on Moonlight to win that I won in October beforehand.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_00: So I won quite a bit of money on that.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: You thought you lost a bunch of money.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought I lost it.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_00: And then like like two minutes later, I was like, oh no, I actually w won.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_00: And I was like I I was more annoyed that Lala Line had won than I'd lost the bet.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_01: So amazing.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_01: What a what a beautiful story.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: It was just really a really funny moment.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: I mean classic.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_00: So many weird Oscar moments in the last few years.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: Truly.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was there was some like um Have you ever written for it?
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_01: Not for the Oscars.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_01: Um Golden Globes.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_01: You wrote the Globes.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_00: You don't remember.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_00: No, I don't.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of like yeah.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_00: It's just a lot of like writing for a specific comedian, usually, isn't it?
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_01: It's like I haven't been in the room for any of those, but like, you know, have s like sent in jokes.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_01: So I don't I did Yeah, I I wrote for the Independent Spirit Awards a couple years ago.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, that must have been fun.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_01: It was fun, yeah.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_00: Who who was hosting?
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was cool.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_01: That's the one I think.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: That was a that was a really good monologue and everything.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, she crushed it, man.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_01: And then she did a whole like song and dance thing that was unbelievable.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, and I wrote for uh what, like a MTV movie awards.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: I was very young.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was fun.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_01: Do you remember who was it was Aziz, yeah.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was so fun.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_01: It was like the right the writer's room for that was like me, Nick Kroll, I think Chelsea Paretti, uh Tignataro.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_01: Like it was so fun.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_00: Amazing room.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: It was so fun, and then like nothing we wrote, goddamn.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_01: Like like we got like his monologue, but there also just like there's this there for a lot of those things, there's like the host has his writers, his or her writers, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_01: And then um there's the show itself has its own writing step.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_01: So like like those people though that group of people often writes the um like banter before people like read off the nominees.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_01: It's why it never well, there's there's no good way of doing it, is there?
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: There's not.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: I mean like man, it's just like unless you unless you get like when it works, it's always like uh Amy and Tina who clearly have written their own thing.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_01: You know, just like don't get in the way of funny people like Tina.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: You can always tell when it's their own stuff.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_01: But a thing I do hate on the other side of it is when a joke goes badly and then the presenter's like, I didn't write that.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_01: I didn't write that.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_01: Just let me know.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_01: Nobody thinks you wrote it.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_01: No one thinks you wrote it, man.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_01: Just like nothing's expected of you.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_01: Just just present the award.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: Nobody cares.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_01: I did think the one thing uh this year's Oscars that was like a huge missed opportunity.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: And again, um this is just I I he couldn't do this because it was John Travolta um starting the like in memoriam and he was giving like a long speech about Olivia Newton John.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_01: But it was such a beautiful opportunity for him to do that whole preamble and then be like, the wonderfully talented Adel Dazim.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_01: Like if he just did Adel Dazim again, that would have been the funniest thing that ever happened at the Oscars.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_01: Because the first Adel Dazim is a a clip I probably watch like once a month.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: It's so funny.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: It's so funny.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_00: I I have no idea how it happens.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_01: He says it so confidently.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_01: It's it's like one of the one of the strangest things anyone's ever done on television.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_01: It's so funny.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_01: Just like forget like because I mean, if I've hosted comedy shows before, obviously.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_01: I had a show for a long time in New York, and there are times where you just like forget who you're bringing up.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I've done that.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_01: And that's that was the moment where like he couldn't be like, I'm sorry, what's her name again?
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_01: He could he knew he couldn't do that, so he just made up a name.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_01: It is so funny.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_00: And oh man, if he He's got a teleprompter in front of him.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that raises a lot of questions too.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: But man, if he uh if he had presented the in memoriam by saying Adelda Zane.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_01: I didn't even think of that.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_00: That's that would have been so funny.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_01: And that maybe this is why I don't write for more shows.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_00: That's what you would have put into the show.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_01: Actually, the first one of my first writing jobs ever was for something called the uh like the comedy awards.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_01: It was like a short-lived, like I think they only did it for a couple years.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_01: And I was in a room, I was like 23.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I was in a room with like all these older established comedy writers in their like 40s and 50s.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_01: And um I came in with this bit.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_01: So like I was like, I came in hot, I had this idea, and it was like very high concept, not exactly the kind of thing you don't do in an award show.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_01: But I was like, the first thing we should do.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_01: Actually, it's sort of like a Rocky Four premise where I was like, we come out, the host says that they're very excited because um they've invested a lot of money into a robot that will um by the end of the night will come up with the perfect joke.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_01: So it's it's the comedy awards, yeah, we're gonna celebrate comedy.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_01: This robot is going to spend the next hour crafting the fun the funniest possible joke.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_01: And then it's just a machine on stage, just like we're whizzing and whirling, as it's like.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_01: So you just like it's on stage, you don't even need to address it.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_01: Then after the final awards, I'm explaining this joke.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_01: And then the final award is read, the robot will ding, and like, oh, it's done, the perfect joke.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_01: And then you would open up a slot and it would be a farting dildo.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: So I I pitched this like farting dildo thing, and like to silence.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_01: And then like a guy had to pull me aside and be like, just don't pitch stuff like that.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_01: And I was like, okay.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_01: I was like, I thought it I thought it would work.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_01: I really like to say I'm like, that would have worked.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_01: But yeah, they didn't.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: The thing is, I think today you could do that with like the chat GPT stuff.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_01: Like now it would I think it would actually work now.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_01: Aaron Powell Yeah.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_01: Maybe I I'm curious if ChatGPT would come up with something as funny.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_00: I think they will I think that's gonna get used as like people's jokes a lot now.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be in loads of material.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_01: And that's funny because like I guess that's just been my go-to joke for a while.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_01: Like when we um when ha we did uh Hacks won the um Writers Guild Award two years ago.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: But it was all um because of COVID protocol, no one it was all over Zoom.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_01: And so I pitched a bit that we act actually ended up doing, which in the event that we won the award, we would accept the award.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_01: Um I I did I wrote this whole bit for um something called Hack Spot, we which was the the premise, the the joke was that like the whole show is written by a robot who's been programmed to write a show about like female friendship and comedy, and uh and it was so stupid and sort of done, and we animated it, and it was like so stupid.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_01: Assuming we were we were not gonna win.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_01: And we won, we won it.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_01: We won the first award for best news show.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: And so Hackspot came out and accepted the award.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_01: And then we won the second one for best writing.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_01: So then we had we had two like identical Hackspot videos.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_01: It was so it was so stupid, so embarrassing.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so Hackspot um is the real winner of the R.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: What was the reaction to it?
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's assuming people did not like it, were annoyed.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_01: You know, but you're under this, like you we were talking before, like this sort of like impossible box where you're like, well, you have to be funny and quick.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you expect of course, like for a comedy show as well, you're expected to be funny in your speech.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_01: And be that be gracious but not overly gracious, you know, not saccharine.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_01: So it's just like well, I don't know.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_01: I pitched it as a joke, and then everyone was like, yeah, let's just do that.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_01: So we like wrote a script for Hackspot and used a robot voice generator I found online.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_01: So stupid.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_00: No, I like at least it's something different.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_01: And I was promoting my show at so theater, I I got uh Oh yeah, I did see.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_00: I saw that.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_01: So I I guess I just use AI a lot.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_01: I love the technology.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: Uh no, the the promotion was really funny.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_00: Thanks, man.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was actually really good.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_01: People got really mad about the queen one.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, yeah, I don't I was talking to a British friend, I was like, are people gonna get mad at this?
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_01: And he was like, yeah, some might, but like you don't want those people at your own.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say the people that would come to your show anyway, like they're not the ones that would get mad at you.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_01: And it's the Queen just saying that she likes my comedy.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_01: It wasn't that bad.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_01: Well, I guess I called her a ghoul.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_00: I was here uh working the night that she died, uh-huh, and um this big British comedian was on, and he he he showed up and he was just like how am I even gonna do this tonight?
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_00: How do I even like what do I do?
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_00: He was just like, I don't really want to go on tonight.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_00: Was he like really?
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_00: No, he wasn't upset.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_00: He was just like he was just like, what do I do here?
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_01: That's man, yeah.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_01: That's a I it's just something as an outsider that's just like so profoundly weird that I we I we do not understand.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, like we were all like all of us here were just like like what like are people gonna show up?
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_00: And they did.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I bet.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_00: Like it was like m majority of the people showed up.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_00: They still came.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_01: Well and they just like hung out by the the palace?
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, for for that, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_00: No, I mean to come see the show to the show.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_00: They just came.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like made into anything, really.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what do you say?
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_01: An old lady died.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_01: It's very like predictable.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_01: She l lived a long, weird life.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_00: The thing the thing is he'd on stage he kept just like going, like any time some reference to something old or a or a lady or something like that, he would be like, well, now you're thinking about that.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_00: And that's how he kind of got around it.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: Weird.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_01: I think I did stand up the night Osama bin Laden died.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_01: Which was a strange night.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_01: I remember that night.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_01: That was the funniest thing The funniest thing about the uh well, the funniest thing of many funny things about Osama bin Laden dying, I'm kidding.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, is um the rock tweeted.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_01: So the rock knew.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_00: I think that's how I found out.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: Weirdly.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: He's like, it was a great night for America.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_01: I can't say anything else.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_01: So people were like, what?
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_00: Did we get Osama bin Laden?
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_00: He had like someone on the inside.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_00: He's friends with one of SEAL Team 6 or whatever.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_00: Um I don't want to keep you too much longer, so let's let's move on to the final very quick thing, which is the higher or lower game.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_00: Uh for anyone watching, I'll bring it up on the screen uh so you can see it.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_00: Um what we do is show you the score of so we start with Rocky 4.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_00: We know it's 38%.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_00: Um so the first movie after this is Rocky.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_00: Rocky.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_00: And do you think it's higher or lower than 38%?
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_00: I think it's higher.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_01: So this is like a price is right game.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_01: I'm going with higher.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_01: 92.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_00: 92 percent.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_00: Lower audience score.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_00: The audience score is that's really low for the audience score.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_00: That's surprising.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_00: Well, it's because he doesn't win.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: I bet that's yeah.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_01: They uh they they addressed that, not Rocky 2.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_01: That is that is surprising.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_01: But yeah, 92, that checks out.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_00: By the way, you're also competing against everyone that's been on this before.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_00: So uh the highest score is four out of six.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_00: Aaron Ross Powell, Jr.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, four out of six.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_00: So one out of one so far.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_00: Um so after Rocky we've got first blood.
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_00: Do you think it's higher or lower than ninety-two?
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_01: Uh uh critic score?
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_00: Uh lower.
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_00: You think it's lower?
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_01: Ooh, close.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_00: I was really surprised when I saw how high rules.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_01: First blood rules.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_01: It's good, but I wasn't expecting it.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_00: Again, eighty-five for all these.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_00: Judge Dread.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_00: Lower.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, famously lower.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_00: Have you seen it?
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_00: I saw it in theaters.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_00: You're so in theaters.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was psyched for Judge Dread, yeah.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_01: And um I saw a funny review of Judge Dread uh when it came out was that like it's so funny for Sylvester Stallone to wear a costume that isolates the weirdest part of his face.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_01: Just two like weird, like slug lips that almost be on his face.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_01: That's so true.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was so psyched for that movie.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_01: It was such a bummer.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_00: Have you seen the other one?
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: Really good.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: I've heard it's good.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_01: I just I was so damaged by judging.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_00: This is bad.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_00: That's really bad.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_01: I will so I have to watch Creed and Judge Dread.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_01: Judge Dread.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_00: Staying alive.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_01: Sorry, well the previous one was what, 38?
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_00: Uh 22.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_01: 22.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, then I'll I'll say um higher.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_00: Staying alive is higher.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_01: I yeah, I actually had a feeling.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_01: Zero percent.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_00: Zero percent.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_00: Just mad.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_01: No, that that makes sense, but but Judge Dread to be worse than Judge Dredd.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_00: Have you seen this though?
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_01: Um I've seen scenes from it for sure.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_00: I only threw this in b he's he's not even in this, he just directed it.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_00: I just zero percent.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_00: It's bad.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_00: I've not ever seen it.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_00: I I love Saturday Night Fever, so I've like never got around to watching this because I'm like, I don't want to tarnish it.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it is it is tarn it tarnishes for sure.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_00: So I mean higher than zero.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_00: That's uh yeah.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_00: Is it higher than zero?
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_00: Forty-two.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_00: But again, like Dolph was in one of these as well.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_01: The Expendables are so funny.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_00: I've not seen any of them.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_01: It's just like just these relics trying their best to do their thing.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's great.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_00: And there's so many movies.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_00: They're making another one, I think.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they just like I it's not as morbid as like someone dies off and they replace them, but it it has that feeling.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_01: It's just like, oh, like someone has like aged into the expendables category.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_00: Oh god.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_00: That's rough.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_00: Well it isn't Yeah, Jason Satan's in it, weirdly.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_00: Well yeah, I guess.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_00: I guess they have like some younger people.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_00: But even like he's going to get up there soon where he's I mean every we'll all become expendables at some point.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, so what what does that put you at?
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_00: That puts you at uh one, two, three.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_00: Puts you at four so far.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I gotta get this one.
- 1:28:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you gotta get the last one.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_01: Creed.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's higher.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_01: It has to be.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_01: Well There you go.
- 1:28:41SPEAKER_01: Man, staying alive really threw me for a loop.
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_01: I have I how many movies?
- 1:28:47SPEAKER_01: That's cool I thought you were going to get that one too.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_01: I thought I mean I that was my instinct and then I was like oh this must be a trick of some sort.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_01: Zero percent.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: So that puts you at the top of the board.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah it's an honor.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah this is so fun.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_01: I be I I'm happy to talk about any Rocky movie really.
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_01: Any Sylvester Stallone movie including Judge Dredd.
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_01: Is that on your list?
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_01: You gotta put that on your list.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll I think I should add it to the list.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_00: I don't think it is on the list.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_00: I should I should ask staying alive to the list as well.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_00: You should I mean that would that would be torture.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_00: I've got someone in the future who's like continuously saying they want to do cats but they just like never got around to it and they they like keep putting it off because they're like actually you know what I don't think I actually enjoy it.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_00: It's uh cats is like a fever dream.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah yeah it gave me a migraine when I watched it oof yeah James Corden.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_00: James Corden our boy James Corden.
- 1:29:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah so do you have anything you want to promote?

- 1:30:21SPEAKER_01: Did you do you deleted Twitter didn't you a while ago?
- 1:30:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_00: It was not good for my mental health no it's it's the smart thing.
- 1:30:29SPEAKER_00: Then you got out at the right time.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah I did I think also like it I was it was sort of destroying my life and it there's no way to like promote anything on Twitter.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_01: So it's like it was it was like there was no way for me to like validate it.
- 1:30:44SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean rationalize it in any way.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_00: I was just like I gotta get off of here.
- 1:30:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_00: Because it's because it's where I've done it's where I've been most successful.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_00: So I I I still cling on to it in the hope that like something will happen one day from like something will shift again.
- 1:31:03SPEAKER_01: Aaron Ross Powell No, like it's not it's never gonna be it's a wasteland and it's only getting like worse and worse with current management.
- 1:31:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_00: I need to get rid of like it's it's it's a mess on all of them now I need to just I want to get rid of all of them but I mean I do miss just having like a text only outlet.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah that is nice.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't ever feel like making videos.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_00: I don't think you have to at this point I well at this stage in your career I don't you do not have to do.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_01: You just do what you want it do.
- 1:31:36SPEAKER_01: Exactly also I just like I've somewhat aged out of that like I don't need to compete with the people who are good at that.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_01: Like you know it's that's not to say I love TikTok.
- 1:31:47SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 1:31:48SPEAKER_01: Are you on TikTok?
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_01: I'm on it but like as a lurker.
- 1:31:51SPEAKER_01: Like I just like you're not like posting anything.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_01: Not really like I'll post some some promotional stuff occasionally it's like a real treat when the algorithm like figures you out.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_01: I get like it does take a while but if like it takes a while but like oh my God I get the I just love everything I get in my feed.
- 1:32:11SPEAKER_01: I'm so happy with my feed as well.
- 1:32:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:32:13SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 1:32:14SPEAKER_01: Don't care if China has my data.
- 1:32:17SPEAKER_01: They're free to I mean you might lose TikTok soon as well though.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_01: Aaron Ross Powell Yeah I know.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_01: So I'm saying like um I part of me wishes I had the time and the ambition and drive to learn Chinese.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_01: So I could like safely like when when like things are reordered geopolitically like I could just jump right in and do my thing in China.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_00: Trevor Burrus But you got some time.
- 1:32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah maybe who knows?
