- 0:07Katelyn: I'm Katelyn Calhoun, and this is a podcast all about storytelling and building genuine community.
- 0:12Katelyn: Here we'll dive into the art of storytelling, unpack strategies for making meaningful connections, and hear from incredible humans who are using their story to create impact.
- 0:22Katelyn: So grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let's craft some connections.
- 0:28Katelyn: Hello and welcome back to Crafted Connections.
- 0:33Katelyn: I am so grateful you're here.
- 0:34Katelyn: It is a great week.
- 0:36Katelyn: It is Halloween week.
- 0:37Katelyn: So I totally did this accidental thing with today's guests.
- 0:40Katelyn: You know, whatever way you want to take it, coincidentally, accidentally, divine timing, whatever you want to call it.
- 0:46Katelyn: Our guest today is the perfect person for this week.
- 0:49Katelyn: That's not to say that I'm not a fan of witchiness all year round, but Megan Hamilton is such a treasure.
- 0:55Katelyn: So let me just read her bio so you can get a little bit of context.
- 0:58Katelyn: Megan Hamilton is a speaker, coach, musician, and the host of Embracing Enchantment Podcast on the Women in Media Network.
- 1:05Katelyn: She's been the speaker advisor for the award-winning TED X Queen's U since 2020 and has coached powerful and meaningful TED X keynote and signature talks all around the world.
- 1:16Katelyn: As an impact witch, she helps folks craft spells in the form of speeches to create legacies of change and new ways of thinking.
- 1:23Katelyn: So this is lots of fun because I met Megan in 2023 when she had her former business, UBU skills, which was very speaker forward, very coaching forward.
- 1:35Katelyn: And she's kind of just taken this whole transition in the last few years and has rebranded recently.
- 1:41Katelyn: And so I got to speak to her right before the rebrand was launched.
- 1:44Katelyn: So we spoke late August of this year, and now she is full into this direction she's going.
- 1:51Katelyn: And it's it's a direction that's a reflection of what she's been doing.
- 1:54Katelyn: And I just love when we we step into kind of the next level of ourselves and just continue to serve people in a beautiful way.
- 2:01Katelyn: And that's exactly what she's doing.
- 2:02Katelyn: I also just appreciate our relationship.
- 2:06Katelyn: It was just really fun as I was kind of re-listening to our interview, to our conversation, to just like hear how lit up we were by interacting with each other.
- 2:15Katelyn: And I I hope I hope you feel that as well.
- 2:18Katelyn: I did want to say we talk a little bit about tarot and tarot reading.
- 2:21Katelyn: We don't get too into the weeds, but there is one specific card that we reference quite a bit called the Tower.
- 2:26Katelyn: And just so you're aware, if you don't know anything about tarot, the tower card is essentially a tower that is being struck by lightning and it has a very weak foundation.
- 2:35Katelyn: And so there's like obviously lots of cool imagery with that.
- 2:38Katelyn: And I just want to make sure that you understand the visuals before you hear us talk about it and the things that it means to us and this, that, and the other.
- 2:45Katelyn: Anywho, I am so excited to share Megan with you because I have had the chance to be both her friend and a client over the years.
- 2:52Katelyn: Let's dig in.
- 2:54Katelyn: I'm so excited.
- 2:54Katelyn: I hope you enjoy.
- 2:55Katelyn: I think the timing could not be better, and I'm so grateful you're here.
- 2:59Katelyn: Megan, thank you for being on Crafted Connections.
- 3:06Katelyn: I am so excited to have you.
- 3:07Katelyn: I'm so excited.
- 3:08Katelyn: I mean, this is probably going to be a bit of my like a little bit of exposing my woo-ey side because right now it's very like I'm like story, builds community, builds connection, builds, you know, what you want.
- 3:18Katelyn: But like, you know, you are.
- 3:20Katelyn: I mean, literally, I just saw Impact Witch is like kind of like a new branding thing that I had not seen before.
- 3:25Katelyn: Can you tell the people about you and Impact Witch and all the things?
- 3:30Megan: I can.
- 3:30Megan: UBU Skills is now Impact Witch.
- 3:33Megan: Cool.
- 3:34Megan: Mm-hmm.
- 3:34Megan: You know, UBU Skills was born in 2018, and it was the UBU part was the basis of the branding of coaching folks through what initially was just public speaking.
- 3:50Megan: Like that's what it was.
- 3:51Megan: It was I'm gonna give you training, and then you know, I can coach you through a speech.
- 3:56Megan: And then, you know, as it does, and you know all about this, you know about the rebrand and the it's very coincidental that like we are talking about this right now.
- 4:06Katelyn: Since I literally tried to record an episode yesterday where I was gonna do like my five biggest business like mistakes out here having one of the busiest weeks of the season, and I'm out here trying to be like, it's something like I wrote in my journal, right?
- 4:19Katelyn: And then I like got on the mic and I was like, ooh, this is painful.
- 4:22Katelyn: Never mind, we're not ready, kind of thing.
- 4:24Katelyn: But these things that led to the rebrand, and so and not even rebrand, but like basically new business for me personally, like, and it's also like new services, new everything, but informed by the you know, eight years of video production, you know, the eight years of telling people stories in a way that I do differently than others, if you will.
- 4:42Katelyn: And then it sounds like you talking about this.
- 4:44Katelyn: I'm like, ooh, this is basically we're parallel with these things.
- 4:49Katelyn: I love that.
- 4:49Katelyn: But you've got your version of it, and yeah, that's so cool.
- 4:53Megan: Yeah.
- 4:53Megan: Well, and mine isn't out yet.
- 4:55Megan: So I'm having all the feelings of the am I doing the right thing?
- 4:59Megan: Is this like gonna absolutely mess things up?
- 5:02Megan: And like I know it won't.
- 5:04Megan: I know it won't, but I'm also really ready for the pushback that I'm I know is going to come from people like, what are you doing?
- 5:13Megan: What how would you put which in the title of your name?
- 5:16Megan: Like, there's a lot of things, and so you know, I'm being really careful, and so again, your listeners are hearing this in the future, but this is like what happened before, you know, it it would have launched.
- 5:29Megan: There's that thing that you know is the right thing to do, and then there's everybody else's opinion.
- 5:34Megan: So I have, you know, you probably saw it because I changed my Instagram handle like immediately because I knew as soon as it came to me, I was like, this is absolutely the right thing.
- 5:42Megan: But then I was like, I do this all the time.
- 5:44Megan: It's even with the same with when I record stuff, like I let all my friends listen to it first, and so then when it comes out, I like all the important people have already heard it, so it just like loses its uh impact.
- 5:57Megan: So I made the change.
- 6:00Megan: I think I like posted a story, and then I was like, What are you doing?
- 6:05Megan: Like but then I I went to change it and it was like, Okay, but this is the last time you can change something, you can't do it again for 14 days, and I was like, Oh no, so that's probably what you've seen.
- 6:17Megan: And behind the scenes, I've been working on like a logo rebrand, the tenets that I am gonna be focusing on are shifting.
- 6:25Megan: When I really thought about what it was that I do, it's still I'm still gonna be a speaking coach.
- 6:32Megan: I'm still gonna be working with people on that stuff, but it's that's not the only thing that I do.
- 6:37Megan: And it's not even just uh visibility and confidence as well.
- 6:41Megan: It is that I help people create impact, and the impact is the shift, it is the changing, it is creating the the disruption that's the word to what is currently happening and what needs to be happening.
- 6:57Megan: So it's funny because my designer and you will love this, they are creating, you know, like five different logos based on tarot imagery for each of the tenants, and one of them, of course, is impact, and they chose the tower.
- 7:15Katelyn: I know, and I was like the tower has given me some wonderful times in my life, it really has.
- 7:21Katelyn: And I know you get it, and you're like, damn it.
- 7:26Katelyn: Yeah.
- 7:27Katelyn: And it's it's hard because like I I'm trying to make sure we bring this back to the people, right?
- 7:34Katelyn: Because you and I have gone deep.
- 7:35Katelyn: And then it's actually interesting to me that we did a very tarot centric container.
- 7:41Katelyn: Remind me of the name.
- 7:42Katelyn: Arcana Pathfinder.
- 7:43Katelyn: Yeah.
- 7:43Katelyn: So we did like a three-month uh tarot-centered container.
- 7:46Katelyn: The three months, honestly, and the intention was not for me to like close my business, open a consulting firm, right?
- 7:54Katelyn: But like that's what happened, you know, and it was lots of reflection and this, that, and the other.
- 7:58Katelyn: And simply put, you know, the way I describe the program, the Arcana Pathfinder that we did together is very much like using visual imagery to like tap into like what I really want, what my actual intuition says, right?
- 8:10Katelyn: So even if you're not like, if you're like, oh, Tara, what?
- 8:12Katelyn: Or even if you've never touched tarot before, it gives you that, oh, I see this image and it like I see a tower, and then you immediately think of like what in your life is falling apart, right?
- 8:20Katelyn: That you might be in denial of, you know, or you might be like, no, no, no, that's fine, that's fine, that's fine.
- 8:26Katelyn: But you see a tower and you're like, that represents, you know, my business finances talking for a friend.
- 8:33Katelyn: Uh so you you're looking at these visual cues, and I mean, I I imagine it's similar to like a Rorschach Shrek, Rorschach test, right?
- 8:43Megan: You know, it's Worcester.
- 8:44Megan: Yeah, no, just kidding.
- 8:46Katelyn: Worcester sauce.
- 8:47Katelyn: Like it's like the Rorschach.
- 8:49Katelyn: I think it's Rorschach.
- 8:50Katelyn: Anyways, so it's similar, like you see an image and then, but then also like you and I both are spiritual people.
- 8:55Katelyn: We believe like that there's, you know, we're not necessarily fully in charge of all this.
- 8:59Katelyn: There's people watching out for us, this, that, and the other, whatever that looks like for us as individuals.
- 9:04Katelyn: But so that gets to be in play too, right?
- 9:06Katelyn: So lots of fun.
- 9:07Katelyn: Lots of fun.
- 9:08Katelyn: And so, I guess what I'm trying to say is that's a container that we had together that, you know, I wasn't like, let's be more visible, let's speak, let's like get my, you know, my speech together so I can rock it out at Ted.
- 9:21Katelyn: So you do so much more.
- 9:23Katelyn: Thank you.
- 9:24Megan: Yeah, the Arcana Pathfinder was a it was from last year.
- 9:27Megan: It was after, you know, you know that I had like a really rocky January through May, basically, of 2024.
- 9:37Megan: And what I came to realize as my own connection to spirituality deepened beyond what I would ever, ever have expected.
- 9:47Megan: And for myself, it came from this desire to bring more of that into the work that I do in general.
- 9:57Megan: So I really wanted to combine tarot with coaching, two skills that I felt really comfortable with, and just kind of see what happened.
- 10:08Megan: And so I put, you know, I did five spots at this sort of initial initial price, and you know, they got scooped up immediately.
- 10:16Megan: And I was like, Oh, I see, okay.
- 10:19Megan: So that kind of felt like, you know, a sign that this was the direction, like after having such a weird, hard time in my
- 10:29Katelyn: after four months of like working and pushing and belaboring, you you this you have this intuitive hit for this idea, and then you put it out there and like they get scooped up.
- 10:39Megan: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:40Megan: And then I did the same thing with my other core program, which is called Thriving Visibility, which is for small business owners, where I brought in spiritual folks to create you know, one-of-a-kind workshops.
- 10:52Megan: And I mean, these aren't these are heavy hitters, right?
- 10:54Megan: These are like Colin Bedell, who writes horoscopes for Cosmo, and Lori Deanne, who's on the TV all the time.
- 11:02Megan: And um they've created these workshops, and then that worked.
- 11:08Megan: And so when Impact Witch came to me, like I think I needed to integrate.
- 11:13Megan: I think you and I have talked a lot about acclimation and how important that is, right?
- 11:17Megan: Like you go on these long journeys and they're hard and difficult, and then you come to the apex of wherever you are that you're going, and then you get to rest for a little while, and you get to be in that top of the mountain or whatever you are, and then that's the acclimation, and you're like, okay, this is now like normal, this is the new normal, or this is this is the integration, the synthesis.
- 11:38Megan: This is you know, my neural pathways have changed, and now they recognize this place in my life, and then you move on from that.
- 11:47Megan: So it's you know, this constant I find pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible for yourself, and then allowing that to integrate, and then that becomes the baseline before you move on to the next thing.
- 11:59Megan: So when Impact, which came to me, I wasn't thinking about a rebrand, I wasn't thinking of doing that at all.
- 12:05Megan: It just kind of came, and then it was like, oh okay, cool, okay, this is what it is.
- 12:11Megan: And then, you know, it's like, okay, well, are you gonna do it?
- 12:15Megan: Because it's gonna it's gonna some people are not gonna get it.
- 12:19Megan: And that's okay.
- 12:22Katelyn: Is this where you find yourself today?
- 12:24Katelyn: You know, kind of uh sifting through what that looks like, this, that, and the other.
- 12:28Katelyn: Where do you find yourself in this uh snapshot of time with all of it?
- 12:33Megan: I mean, I'm thankful that I've been really busy and I haven't had a lot.
- 12:37Megan: There's one of my favorite Wes Anderson quotes, which is something like somebody was like, you know, do you ever second guess yourself?
- 12:43Megan: Or he goes, There's there's there's no time for self-doubt.
- 12:46Megan: Like that it's too, it's I have to make a choice and go.
- 12:50Megan: And I've always kind of felt that way as well.
- 12:52Megan: So on the times when I have to reflect, I'm like, oh my god, what am I doing?
- 12:59Megan: And then I let myself feel that.
- 13:02Megan: And then I'm like, no, I know this is right.
- 13:05Megan: That's okay.
- 13:05Megan: There's going to be reverberations from this, but and there has already.
- 13:10Megan: I mean, I've I've had some conversations that were uncomfortable with folks not getting it, especially for stuff that's happening in the future where people are like, uh, you know, they hit in my bio, let's say they listed me as UBU skills, and I'm like, actually, this is the direction we're going.
- 13:26Megan: And they're like, uh, I don't know.
- 13:28Megan: And I'm like, well, this is how it is, baby.
- 13:32Megan: You gotta do you gotta do it.
- 13:34Megan: But Impact, which also speaks to my own real need to be putting myself on stages again.
- 13:44Megan: So I had been, you know, I'm a classically trained actor, and I am a musician who has toured across North America, coast to ghost, and I've been supporting other folks for a number of years and not necessarily putting myself out there as much as I normally would like to.
- 14:03Megan: So when I started my podcast, which is called Embracing Enchantment, that was part of it.
- 14:08Megan: That was like, I'm I need to be doing this more, like I need to be more front and center.
- 14:15Megan: It's part of where I like to be.
- 14:16Megan: And then I knew also that I wanted to speak more, like I wanted to actually be speaking some of the things that I talk to folks about, the importance of your voice, the importance of self-efficacy, how to carve out a life that is meaningful and joyful, and you know, where you're uh finding yourself expanding and why that's important.
- 14:39Megan: So impact, which allowed me to be able to shift away from UBU skills towards something a bit more bold and more of a statement, and to help with the impact.
- 14:54Megan: So it's not only just me showing folks where they can have impact, but me also having impact in a more front-facing way.
- 15:02Katelyn: Yeah.
- 15:02Katelyn: And impact can be a little bit jarring, it can be a little bit challenging.
- 15:07Katelyn: It's like, I mean, impact.
- 15:08Katelyn: I'm thinking about like a car impacting, right?
- 15:10Megan: Like lightning bolt hitting the tower.
- 15:13Katelyn: Well, and I actually I love how you've incorporated the lightning bolt emoji into your homepage because and I honestly was like it hit me because I I recently have like done the whole like people, it's a trend right now, like including emojis like in your like LinkedIn name, right?
- 15:30Katelyn: And I was like trying to pick a like an it's I don't know, I think it's just like oh my gosh.
- 15:36Katelyn: I I kind of geek out on it, but it's like because I think I'm good at it.
- 15:41Katelyn: It works for you.
- 15:42Katelyn: It does work.
- 15:42Katelyn: I don't know why it works for me, but it does.
- 15:45Katelyn: And I do, you know, I've had an experience where I remember, like, I remember in like 2023, I was like, oh, I really or no, no, 2022.
- 15:53Katelyn: I said to someone, I was like, oh, I really want to lean into LinkedIn.
- 15:56Katelyn: And they were like, ew.
- 15:57Katelyn: And then I so then I didn't.
- 16:00Katelyn: And then I don't know, as of like late 2024, I was just someone like was, you know, talking about it on a podcast.
- 16:07Katelyn: And I was like, yeah, I'm gonna do it.
- 16:09Katelyn: Right.
- 16:09Katelyn: And there's something about it where it's like, it just feels really good.
- 16:13Katelyn: Cause I love uh we could go down that road hole, but all to say I saw the emoji on there and I was just like, I, you know, went through all the different emojis.
- 16:22Katelyn: And while I love the sparkle emoji, I just something about the lightning bolt really like called out to me.
- 16:27Katelyn: And I'm all about so when I see you do an impact witch, right?
- 16:30Katelyn: I'm all about like making sure the story has impact.
- 16:33Katelyn: And I also like am all about being like, if you do not share the story, you can collect everything, you can put everything together, but if you don't put it out there, there's no impact kind of thing.
- 16:44Katelyn: And that you're all about visibility, right?
- 16:46Katelyn: If you don't actually show yourself what impact happens.
- 16:50Katelyn: And yes, it can shake you up a little bit.
- 16:52Katelyn: So all to say, I love that we we both are connecting with the lightning bolt, and and it is so funny.
- 16:57Katelyn: It is present and accounted for on the tower card.
- 17:02Megan: It really is.
- 17:03Megan: Yep.
- 17:04Megan: Yep, that lightning bolt for sure is it.
- 17:07Megan: I've always been gravitated to a lightning bolt.
- 17:10Megan: Like even I remember before even emojis were invented for one of my merch tables.
- 17:16Megan: So my merch table for music has always been like an old timey suitcase.
- 17:19Megan: And then like I open it up, and then there's a backdrop on the inside, and then all the CDs are inside, and I have like little twinkle lights that I put around it and stuff like that, right?
- 17:29Megan: And you've been a witch the whole time, is what's going on though.
- 17:32Katelyn: Like I hear this and I'm just like, Professor McGonagall?
- 17:34Katelyn: Like, what are you like that's part of the rebrand?
- 17:40Megan: Just kidding.
- 17:40Megan: Um yeah, like I think yes.
- 17:42Megan: I mean, in answer to your question, yes.
- 17:44Katelyn: Right.
- 17:44Katelyn: You're like my merch table, you open old time a suitcase, you can climb on in, there's a gift shop.
- 17:48Katelyn: Look exactly.
- 17:53Megan: That is next level.
- 17:55Megan: That actually wouldn't that be amazing.
- 17:57Megan: So I had done this, it is my second record.
- 17:59Megan: So this is like back in like 2007.
- 18:01Megan: So I guess we had emojis, but not like we do now.
- 18:04Megan: And I made a blue sparkly lightning bolt that I taped to the back of it.
- 18:11Megan: And that was always something that I loved.
- 18:13Megan: And so, yeah, when you could do it easily from your phone, yeah, done.
- 18:18Megan: You're like lightning.
- 18:19Megan: Yeah, in for life.
- 18:21Megan: Let's go.
- 18:21Megan: Lifer.
- 18:22Megan: I don't know how much it'll play actually, though, in Impact Witch because right now we've got I want to show you so bad.
- 18:30Katelyn: It's just for the time being, it's just a fun little texture to split up Megan Hamilton and Impact Witch.
- 18:36Katelyn: Exactly.
- 18:37Katelyn: It does the magic that it needs to on your homepage.
- 18:40Katelyn: It's a fun time.
- 18:41Katelyn: You know, you will still be pulling it for for yourself and others when you pull the tower.
- 18:46Katelyn: There's I'm sure there's a lot of other lightning bolts throughout the tarot deck?
- 18:50Katelyn: No, not so much.
- 18:50Katelyn: That's the one.
- 18:51Katelyn: Interesting.
- 18:52Katelyn: And you are really one who like keeps I and I know you I love how you call us out all the time is you always find new little like imagery and little things that like mash and this, that, and the other.
- 19:02Megan: But that's why I love tarot so much.
- 19:04Megan: I'm always like, how did I never notice this?
- 19:07Megan: And I've been reading tarot now for the twenty-seven years.
- 19:13Megan: Yeah.
- 19:14Megan: Dang.
- 19:15Megan: Yeah, something like that.
- 19:16Megan: And every once in a while I just go, What?
- 19:19Megan: How is that a snake?
- 19:20Megan: And I've never seen that before.
- 19:21Katelyn: Yeah.
- 19:22Katelyn: Hey friends, if you've been craving a little more focus and accountability in the work that you do and you want to build some community around that, I host a monthly kickoff session.
- 19:36Katelyn: So the first business day of every month.
- 19:38Katelyn: It's a two-hour virtual reset where we reflect on the month before, set intentions for what's next, and get some real work done, all alongside an encouraging group of humans that show up with some purpose.
- 19:50Katelyn: Our next one is coming up this Monday, November 3rd, from 10 to noon EST, and it's totes free to join on Zoom.
- 19:57Katelyn: So if you want to start your month with some clarity, focus, and community, this is your sign.
- 20:01Katelyn: We would love to have you.
- 20:03Katelyn: We'd love to make friends with you.
- 20:05Katelyn: And uh, I'm super, super excited.
- 20:06Katelyn: We did our first one in October, and I feel like I've had a better month for it.
- 20:11Katelyn: So please join us.
- 20:13Katelyn: If November 3rd doesn't work for you, we do it, like I said, we do it the first business day of every month.
- 20:18Katelyn: So check it out.
- 20:19Katelyn: The link is in the show notes, and we would love to have you there.
- 20:23Katelyn: Let's rock it out, shall we?
- 20:24Katelyn: Now back to the episode.
- 20:26Katelyn: Something I want to talk to you about because I even my own, like, I think my own limiting thoughts, like as you were talking about the air of pushback that you're already experiencing when it comes to like the name Impact Witch and the idea that, you know, maybe you're a sponsor or a partner or a panelist on something, and you're like, actually, it's not UBU skills anymore, it's Impact Witch.
- 20:49Katelyn: My internally, I was just like, oh, well, because I've done this historically where I've we'll be branded this way for these people and we branded that way for others.
- 20:57Katelyn: And like that's putting your foot in two different like camps.
- 21:00Katelyn: And so you can't actually have the impact you want because you're not full focus.
- 21:05Katelyn: I would love to hear your thoughts on like I'm sure you work with people about this all the time.
- 21:10Megan: Well, I mean, I think that there are, you know, there's no right answer to this question.
- 21:14Megan: And I think that's part of the reason why Impact Witch is going to be kind of the main organization.
- 21:20Megan: And so sometimes I will be showing up as Megan Hamilton.
- 21:23Megan: Like, I'm not the Impact Witch, and it's not like here's Impact Witch on the stage.
- 21:27Megan: It's but you're letting go of UBU skills though.
- 21:31Katelyn: Like that's the thing, right?
- 21:32Katelyn: Like I almost was like, oh well, for maybe some more corporate y and like this, that, and the other, you could still be UBU skills, but your logo's always been a you unicorn there.
- 21:40Katelyn: So like, you know, anyways, but also say I just see how like people can really divide themselves very quickly when when you don't show up fully.
- 21:48Katelyn: Yes.
- 21:49Megan: Okay.
- 21:49Megan: I mean, okay, two things about that.
- 21:52Megan: One is there's stuff within the corporate world that you just they don't want to do it, you don't want to do it, but they need This to happen for you know the greater corporation, which is not actual humans, it's just I don't know, a board of directors or something.
- 22:06Megan: Like there's stuff that has to happen within corporations that you can't control.
- 22:11Megan: So do you sometimes have to switch things around in order to get the corporate gigs that offer more money?
- 22:18Megan: Is this what we're talking about?
- 22:19Megan: Like, yes.
- 22:20Megan: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:21Megan: And I also know that I'm secretly still gonna show up as myself and we're still gonna have conversations about patriarchy.
- 22:31Megan: We're still gonna have conversations about how you are proud of yourself, and that might make you feel uncomfortable, but we're gonna talk about it.
- 22:39Megan: So I discovered this with grant writing.
- 22:42Megan: It's like, I know what I want to do, I know what the parameters of the grant are.
- 22:46Megan: I'm gonna shape shift to fit within the parameters of the grant, but I know what I'm trying to do doesn't change.
- 22:52Megan: You're still gonna have the impact.
- 22:54Katelyn: Yeah.
- 22:54Katelyn: So you kind of almost you're not not being true to yourself.
- 22:57Katelyn: You're just kind of like, you got a shiny wrapper, and then you're like, oh, surprise, this is the flavor of the candy.
- 23:03Megan: Like you weren't expecting mango.
- 23:07Megan: Absolutely.
- 23:09Megan: And so it's the same with what we talk about performance versus being yourself.
- 23:15Megan: And I had a big long conversation with my husband about this the other day.
- 23:19Megan: Whenever you have like a microphone, or whenever you're on a stage, or whenever you're, you know, there's like other people around that are not just you and the person you're talking to, it is a performance.
- 23:32Megan: You are aware of the fact that you have an audience, and that is a performance.
- 23:36Megan: And so there are elements to performance that you have to bring to the table.
- 23:41Megan: Like, for example, I'm wearing lipstick today because I don't know if I can't remember if this is filmed or not.
- 23:46Katelyn: And it's audio only, but I might be doing some social.
- 23:48Katelyn: So great.
- 23:49Katelyn: She's got lipstick, she's ready.
- 23:51Katelyn: Mango flavored kisses.
- 23:54Megan: But was I wearing lipstick before when I was in my pajamas and doing editing?
- 23:59Megan: No.
- 23:59Megan: Am I still the same person?
- 24:01Megan: 100%.
- 24:01Megan: But I know that like there's just certain things you do that add something to the performance that helps people listen or watch you.
- 24:12Megan: I don't really think that red lipstick plays, I just wanted to.
- 24:16Megan: Sometimes it's just for you as well, right?
- 24:19Katelyn: But when I turned on the camera and I see you, I'm like, oh, Megan's ready.
- 24:24Katelyn: You know, like it's like, and it brings an energy here.
- 24:27Katelyn: And then, yeah, no, I completely understand what you're saying.
- 24:29Katelyn: Like, that totally makes sense.
- 24:30Katelyn: And it's yeah, societally, like when a woman puts on lick lipstick, it's like it is a little bit of an intentional act.
- 24:37Katelyn: And in our case, you know, we understand each other quite a bit.
- 24:40Katelyn: And we I know that you enjoy wearing it, and I'm like, oh, but she wanted to she wanted to just feel good and fresh.
- 24:45Katelyn: Look at her go.
- 24:46Katelyn: And for me, like I wore it for you.
- 24:50Katelyn: I know that, I know that for sure.
- 24:52Megan: And witches traditionally wear red lipstick.
- 24:56Megan: So I was also thinking of Impact Witch.
- 25:00Katelyn: So good, so good.
- 25:01Katelyn: Okay, very cool.
- 25:01Katelyn: And I I love this in so many ways, right?
- 25:04Katelyn: Because and I love that also what you're saying, like any microphone stage, is and there I even as you were talking about that, I was thinking about like, yes, we are talking to each other, but this is a podcast that I will be, you know, editing and putting out there.
- 25:16Katelyn: And so, and we both know that, right?
- 25:19Katelyn: And so, like and we're behaving accordingly, we're behaving accordingly because otherwise I think we would let the ADD take us on our journey that we let it take us on.
- 25:28Megan: I literally was like, nobody's gonna listen to this one on 3x.
- 25:33Katelyn: No, they can't.
- 25:33Katelyn: Too fast.
- 25:34Katelyn: Too fast.
- 25:35Katelyn: You can try to listen on point five.
- 25:36Katelyn: Can you hear what we're saying so fast?
- 25:38Katelyn: Like can you hear me now on 3x?
- 25:41Katelyn: Oh, yeah.
- 25:42Katelyn: No, it's it's so true.
- 25:43Katelyn: I don't really for the pod like slow myself down.
- 25:46Katelyn: And I'm not mad about it.
- 25:48Katelyn: Because like, no, I'm sorry you don't.
- 25:50Megan: People can slow you down if they need to, but the other thing is so that is also part of the performance element because you want to be able to reflect in a way that is true to the heart of why you and I are here today.
- 26:06Megan: And so if you have to do too much thinking about slowing down, and I say this to folks all the time too, because they're like, Oh, I get hung up on my all the ums that I say.
- 26:14Megan: I'm like, nobody cares.
- 26:15Megan: Also, if you're doing a a podcast and the person is doing a good job, they will just remove all of the ums or at least like half of them and then make you feel for me.
- 26:23Megan: It's what do I say all the time?
- 26:24Megan: You know, I remove so many, you know's on my podcast.
- 26:28Katelyn: I say fact, fact, fact, right?
- 26:30Katelyn: Do a lot of that.
- 26:33Katelyn: Yeah, right?
- 26:34Katelyn: And not in right, right?
- 26:36Katelyn: Right?
- 26:36Katelyn: Nobody who's here with me right now, but will be listening in the future.
- 26:40Katelyn: I I edit those out so much.
- 26:41Katelyn: Right, and that's something too.
- 26:43Katelyn: It's she did well, no, that was in the sentence, so it's different.
- 26:46Katelyn: Now I like can't say the word right ever.
- 26:48Katelyn: But the the that's something too.
- 26:50Katelyn: It's when you're actually putting like a podcast together, you get to also decide like, is it just one of those podcasts that's raw?
- 26:57Katelyn: Do you want it to be like we get rid of all ums, all pauses, all this, that, and the other, or maybe it's half and half.
- 27:02Katelyn: And like that's also like a bit of how a certain product is packaged too.
- 27:06Megan: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:07Megan: It's it's what's part of the brand.
- 27:09Megan: Do you want, I mean, Amy Poehler's podcast, they're putting on a performance.
- 27:13Megan: That's not how they're I mean, they're probably gonna be somewhat like that when it's just the two of them yeah hanging out in a bar.
- 27:20Megan: Yeah, but they are trying to be funny, they are trying to quick pick quicken the tempo.
- 27:26Megan: They're you know, there's all kinds of things that they're trying to do, and that is a performance, and it is because they know that people will be listening.
- 27:34Megan: And so, even in a way, when you say right, that means that you're aware of the audience that you're speaking to when you're recording your podcast, which is actually what we want to be doing, because otherwise you're just reading from a page or just saying things without having an understanding of the fact that you are in communication, it's just not in this exact real time, but other people are going to be listening to you.
- 28:01Megan: Does that make sense?
- 28:02Megan: That totally makes sense.
- 28:03Megan: So cool, very cool.
- 28:06Megan: It will change how your voice sounds too.
- 28:08Megan: Because if you're just doing a voice note for yourself, I mean, you actually you might, but it might be like, Hey Katelyn, it's me.
- 28:15Megan: Just wanted to remind you to pay the phone bell.
- 28:19Katelyn: You know, right?
- 28:19Katelyn: Well, and I do with voice notes.
- 28:20Katelyn: I do phone bill, pay the phone bill.
- 28:24Katelyn: Well, and even I've been very, very jam-packed with production projects recently.
- 28:28Katelyn: And typically I'm the kind of person who emails someone and is like, hope you're well thinking about your dog, you know.
- 28:34Katelyn: And then I get to the point, but recently it's like, hi, this is what I need.
- 28:38Katelyn: Bye.
- 28:38Katelyn: Like, because I don't have the time right now.
- 28:41Katelyn: And it's so awkward because it's not me.
- 28:45Katelyn: It's so not me, but it's also me right now and what I need.
- 28:48Katelyn: And so, same thing, right?
- 28:49Katelyn: Like voice note where you're like, Don't forget about this.
- 28:52Katelyn: You need toilet paper, you know, versus if I'm writing, like if I'm doing like a journaling voice note where I'm like reflecting on my year, at the end I'm like, I love you so much, Katelyn.
- 29:01Katelyn: You're so good and you deserve love, you know.
- 29:03Katelyn: And it's like, yeah, yeah.
- 29:06Katelyn: But it's all these different, it's different performances, right?
- 29:08Katelyn: Because it's still a performance when you're like, what's the objective?
- 29:11Katelyn: They need to know that future Katelyn needs toilet paper.
- 29:15Katelyn: Great.
- 29:16Megan: Achieved.
- 29:17Megan: Achieved.
- 29:18Megan: Yep.
- 29:18Megan: That's all I needed to say.
- 29:20Katelyn: Yeah.
- 29:20Megan: I didn't have to say it in any other way.
- 29:22Megan: Oh wow.
- 29:23Megan: Yeah.
- 29:23Megan: But having said that, when we talk about performance, and this is where people get hung up, it's the how do you be yourself while also performing?
- 29:32Megan: And so there's obviously you can, you know, I think it's kind of like a pendulum.
- 29:38Megan: You can veer one side, which is a complete performance, which is pure manipulation, which is devoid of any of your actual self and and who you are and what you care about and what you think, because your your objective is trying to get something from somebody, which is theater, right?
- 29:54Megan: That's that's what you when you show up on the stage as a character, you're every single time you're speaking with somebody else, there's an objective which is what am I trying to get from this person?
- 30:03Megan: And it could be a reaction, it could be like an actual object, it could be, you know, there's always a reason why you're saying what you're saying, and you are behaving in a way that will evoke or help to evoke what you want from that person.
- 30:16Megan: So you might be kind of soothing or you might be using flattery or charm, or you know, like your voice changes.
- 30:24Megan: And so when we talk about being authentic and still in some kind of performance mode, one of the things that you said earlier is perfect.
- 30:32Megan: You're like, I'm not trying to slow down for this because I want to be myself.
- 30:36Megan: And I know if I slow down, like I won't get the good stuff that's coming out of my you didn't say that, but I know what you meant.
- 30:41Megan: Like if I slow down and I think about it too much, I it's it's gonna get convoluted everything I'm trying to do.
- 30:46Megan: And then I think about the energy I'm putting out too, right?
- 30:50Katelyn: Like that's the thing too.
- 30:51Katelyn: Like when I go at the pace that feels really good and I'm like in here, like in the energy of my core, that's like the good stuff, right?
- 30:58Katelyn: Versus being like, okay, make sure you say the right stuff at the right pace.
- 31:02Katelyn: And it's not exciting anymore because my excitement has flown away, never to return.
- 31:07Megan: When you have ADD or ADHD, when the excitement's gone, guess what?
- 31:11Megan: It's over.
- 31:12Megan: The brain just goes, like it's like put on your sweats take a nap.
- 31:17Megan: This has to be fun or nothing.
- 31:18Megan: Right.
- 31:19Megan: Oh my gosh.
- 31:20Katelyn: You change my life.
- 31:21Katelyn: I am so, you know, uh anyone who's listening to the podcast, I don't think is going to be shocked.
- 31:29Katelyn: Or anyone who knows me, I don't think they're gonna be shocked.
- 31:31Katelyn: I am not diagnosed, but I definitely am ADD.
- 31:33Katelyn: I and I think some people use that very liberally, but I don't think I am using it very liberally.
- 31:38Katelyn: But you last year told me, which I had no idea that ADD is like actually just a lack of dopamine in the brain.
- 31:44Katelyn: And I saw an article, and there's I'm sure there's much more brain science to it, but like the fact that there is a lack of dopamine, I was just like, okay, that makes so much sense.
- 31:53Katelyn: And it just really just gave me so many aha's, and it's been like 12 months, and you told me that, and my life has been wonderful.
- 31:58Katelyn: ADD still, but also wonderful.
- 32:00Katelyn: How amazing.
- 32:00Katelyn: How amazing.
- 32:01Katelyn: And the funny thing is, is my dad always like describes me as a ball buster and like I love to push buttons.
- 32:06Katelyn: And like I literally saw a reel where it was like Jack Black dancing and being like, you know, when you need some dopamine, so you go and bug somebody, right?
- 32:15Katelyn: And I didn't realize that the like causing trouble or like pushing buttons, and not even like bad trouble, just like silly trouble.
- 32:22Katelyn: It just gives you those brain drugs that you need.
- 32:25Megan: That's so interesting.
- 32:26Megan: I don't even know if I knew about that one.
- 32:28Megan: I mean, I've definitely been accused of stirring the pot before, and I always just thought it was because I was a badass, but maybe it's because it could be both.
- 32:35Katelyn: I mean, I think AD ADD is badass, you know?
- 32:38Katelyn: And the fact, I mean, you you functioned with it for you know, drug-free, undiagnosed for like 50 years, right?
- 32:44Katelyn: I mean, you didn't really get diagnosed until you're like 49, right?
- 32:47Megan: Yeah, I can't remember if I was 49 or I think I started the process at 49.
- 32:52Megan: Yeah.
- 32:52Megan: Which is again, it was a process, yeah.
- 32:55Megan: Mm-hmm.
- 32:56Megan: Yeah.
- 32:56Megan: Now I have you know the lowest dose of Vyvanse that that people take, and it just gives me what I need to be able to focus.
- 33:03Megan: And and even then, it's not like it's not like I'm just like focused and like working all the time and have to think about I'm a hundred percent still me.
- 33:13Megan: I probably should be taking more, but I'm just like, I don't want to.
- 33:16Megan: I mean, I you know, we'll see.
- 33:18Megan: But you know, the superpower of ADHD slash ad is that you can hold a lot of things in your brain at the same time, and you know the connective tissue and the patterns, and you can see it all.
- 33:33Megan: And the trick is to get it out of your mouth fast enough before it starts to fall apart, right?
- 33:38Megan: Which is I think where a lot of the interrupting comes from.
- 33:40Megan: And I will also say that I know a lot of people with ADHD because I'm a coach for business owners, and a lot of entrepreneurs have ADHD because it it is one of the quote unquote superpowers, but it is also incredibly debilitating for a lot of people.
- 33:59Megan: And so, what you might call a superpower for some people, like it's just any kind of executive function, is a task and is incredibly tedious.
- 34:09Megan: And so, you know, we joke about ADHD sometimes, and and certainly I do, because I would say I, you know, it's on a spectrum, certainly, but like my way that it shows itself is milder than some of the ways I've seen it affect other people.
- 34:23Megan: And so for all you listening, going, superpower, like shut up.
- 34:28Megan: Absolutely.
- 34:30Megan: This is just how it shows itself for me.
- 34:33Megan: And you know, the other side of this is when you do have those 20 things in your head at once, and you're putting the connective tissue and you're speaking so quickly, and you'll do like five projects at the same time and get them all done.
- 34:46Megan: The crash on the other side of that that is necessary to recover is its own thing.
- 34:53Megan: You know, you might feel like I do sometimes where I'm just like, I got no thoughts in my brain, and I'm gonna just be a sloth for a few days because I have depleted all of my resources.
- 35:06Katelyn: Phil and I call them uh sleep coma days, where it's like it's just it's just a sleep coma day.
- 35:12Katelyn: It's all it's literally all you can do.
- 35:14Katelyn: Because and then you're right, like, and then that's something too.
- 35:16Katelyn: And this is where to go back to like the philosophy and the purpose behind this podcast is like people sharing things like this so that I don't look at my sleep coma days and think, why am I so lazy like that?
- 35:31Katelyn: Or why can't I spread it out?
- 35:33Katelyn: You know, like to hear you say like you described it and I knew exactly what you're talking about, the sleep coma day.
- 35:38Katelyn: You know, it's the day that like I've gone 12 plus hours for 13 days because I love what I'm doing and do this, you know.
- 35:44Katelyn: And honestly, it really is a choice.
- 35:46Katelyn: It really is the way that I do it, like it is a choice.
- 35:48Katelyn: I sometimes in the middle of it, I'm like, ooh, why is my life like this?
- 35:51Katelyn: But like it is a choice to go that hard.
- 35:53Katelyn: I wouldn't want to stop if somebody said, no, we can handle everything for you.
- 35:56Katelyn: I I don't think I would handle that well either, right?
- 35:58Katelyn: So it's like all to say, then you know, day 14, 15, and we need to sleep for two to three days straight, and my muscles, like my muscles are exhausted, you know, like so.
- 36:09Katelyn: When you described that, I'm like, oh, seen immediately.
- 36:13Megan: Yeah, you recognize it right away.
- 36:14Megan: Totally.
- 36:15Megan: I don't actually know, I will say this as somebody who has tried to bring quote unquote like balance into my life for my whole life.
- 36:27Megan: I said to my therapist, my balance is this.
- 36:31Megan: This is how I cannot do because if I'm excited about something and I'm like, whoa, slow down, you're going way too hard, I will slow down and I will either obsess about the thing that I am trying not to do too much, or I will then after like a day or so, I'll just immediately lose interest.
- 36:53Megan: I don't know about I can't speak for everybody, but for me with ADHD, if I don't see it through to the finish line when I have the energy and enthusiasm for it, I may not finish it.
- 37:02Megan: Or finishing it becomes the most tedious.
- 37:07Megan: Right.
- 37:08Megan: And I will do anything aside from doing that thing.
- 37:12Katelyn: Right, right.
- 37:13Katelyn: If you like, yeah, if you don't utilize the energy you have in that moment, then it's like, oh, it's such an experience.
- 37:22Katelyn: It is such an experience.
- 37:23Katelyn: I am grateful that my brain works this way.
- 37:25Katelyn: And I have to speak to, you know, you know, whether choosing whether or not to have whatever amount of medication, I have found, like you said, with business owners, right?
- 37:34Katelyn: There's a level of like, I have designed my life in a way that is ADD friendly, is you know, it like it allows me to function how, but like not all roles, not all like lifestyles allow this type of intensity and then a Tuesday sleep coma day, you know.
- 37:51Katelyn: Like it jobs are not very sleep coma friendly.
- 37:54Katelyn: No, they're not.
- 37:55Katelyn: They're not.
- 37:56Katelyn: And in addition to that, they also like I've you know, I I have so many lovely business owners in my life that I've done collaborative projects with, this, and the other, where like they're not mad at me for emailing them on a Friday night because that's the moment where I'm like so jazzed about the idea.
- 38:09Katelyn: They just like energetically, there's permission to to be asynchronous and just go, go, go, you know, and and do what you want to do when you want to do it.
- 38:18Katelyn: Like I'm I'm putting some schedules together over the weekend, and that just like feels really good because it'll be like at the pace I want, and I can like be done after this podcast for the day, which to me it's 4 p.m.
- 38:27Katelyn: on a Friday, so that makes sense, but still, you know, it's knowing your rhythms and working with them, and you're right, it really is hard to do that in a regular job structure under normal sort of like boss employee relationships.
- 38:42Katelyn: You're like, um, I would probably do better if I came in alone on Saturday and then took every Friday off.
- 38:50Katelyn: And they're like, That's no.
- 38:52Katelyn: Yeah, they're like, No.
- 38:54Katelyn: And and they I don't know if it's like a trust thing or or what, but it's I because I haven't been, you know, in a job.
- 38:59Katelyn: In a job for I mean, it'll be nine years, like probably around the time this pod comes out.
- 39:04Katelyn: So what?
- 39:05Katelyn: You know?
- 39:05Katelyn: Yeah.
- 39:06Megan: Our our mutual friend Erica Tevins and I have talked about this before.
- 39:09Megan: I'm like, I don't think I'm hireable.
- 39:11Katelyn: I know.
- 39:11Katelyn: And I well that that's the thing that's so hard about it because it's like because we are such driven people, and someone would be lucky to like collaborate with us and work with us in that way.
- 39:24Katelyn: And also, I do have that same thought.
- 39:27Katelyn: Like, am I even hireable?
- 39:29Katelyn: Like in the way that I function, but I am, but I also am not.
- 39:33Katelyn: But also I there's a level of maybe there's masking.
- 39:37Katelyn: Like I I don't know.
- 39:38Katelyn: Yeah.
- 39:38Katelyn: I don't know.
- 39:39Katelyn: Yeah.
- 39:40Katelyn: And maybe this isn't the direction, but I'd love to hear you.
- 39:44Megan: Yeah.
- 39:44Megan: I mean, with masking, I think that's part of it.
- 39:47Megan: And once you actually unmask, so I co so now we're veering into like this is this is a very different topic, but well, yeah, let's let me rephrase the questions.
- 39:57Katelyn: Let's phrase it this way.
- 39:58Katelyn: You know, we discussed on some level, there's always like if you're you've got a stage, you've got a mic, there's performing, right?
- 40:04Katelyn: But then what does it look like to like be masking, right?
- 40:09Katelyn: Like performing intentionally, knowing what you're doing versus like trying to fit into a mold because that's what you think you need to do in order to have, I don't know what, right?
- 40:20Katelyn: So can you speak to masking a little bit and what's different here?
- 40:23Megan: Sure.
- 40:23Megan: I mean, I think masking often is unintentional and it is like a byproduct of trying to fit in.
- 40:31Megan: You're not necessarily aware that you're masking until you discover that masking is a thing.
- 40:36Megan: And for those who are listening who are like, what the hell is masking?
- 40:39Megan: Masking is when you realize that you're different or what is required of you is not how you would normally behave.
- 40:46Megan: And so you put on a persona that you think the other person wants you to have, and you, you know, you you play a role essentially.
- 40:56Megan: And so a lot of folks who are introverts, for example, if they are if it they are required to be sort of hosts at an event, they will mask the role of the host and you know, maybe have sort of a bigger personality than they otherwise would have.
- 41:12Megan: And then later, once they've gone home, will need a lot of time to recover from how much energy it took for them to be able to mask in this, you know, host role.
- 41:24Megan: But masking is again, and I'm not an expert on this, but this is how I see it is and through your experience working with people on their visibility and present like and their presentation, right?
- 41:35Katelyn: Like through your experience that you do have you've come into talking to lots of people about their masking experiences, right?
- 41:41Katelyn: And so through that you have that like ethos and background.
- 41:45Megan: Yeah, totally.
- 41:46Megan: And I think you know, it might also be important to differentiate between like autistic masking versus putting on a performance or a persona.
- 41:55Megan: So maybe we if we say persona, that might be a little bit more accurate, right?
- 42:00Megan: Like you're playing a part at work that uh, you know, in order to fit into the culture, in order to show up with the energy that is expected of you, that people expect of you, because otherwise you might just sit in the corner like with a very blank face, just taking it all in.
- 42:15Megan: But often you're not actually aware of it.
- 42:21Megan: It's not necessarily a decision of I am going to be the charming person in this, I don't know, office meeting.
- 42:29Megan: But somehow you have taken on that role, that persona.
- 42:33Megan: And you've it's because you think that who you are, just like general you, like fast talking Katelyn or you know, 20 ideas at a time, Megan, is too much or not acceptable or whatever, XYZ.
- 42:49Megan: But in the year 2025, after we've had a lot of research and a lot of conversations about this, once people realize that why they're so exhausted, let's say, because some because like sometimes you'll just be like, Why am I so tired?
- 43:04Megan: I'm getting enough sleep, or it's because you are expending way more energy than you otherwise would have.
- 43:09Megan: If you could just be your actual self and personality, and then the other side of that is if you are somebody who's been playing roles for most of your life, you don't actually know who you are, yeah, and how you how what normal is for you.
- 43:24Katelyn: Right.
- 43:25Katelyn: And the energy to like reconnect with that is also a lot of work,
- 43:29Megan: and and it you know, often at least if you know it and you can make the decision, then you start getting to know yourself better, and you're like, actually, I don't wanna, I don't need to be, you know, party time Megan yucking it up with everybody else.
- 43:44Katelyn: I know.
- 43:45Megan: It's literally never been me.
- 43:47Megan: Right.
- 43:48Katelyn: I know, I I honestly have a hard time imagining it.
- 43:51Katelyn: Yeah.
- 43:52Katelyn: She's yucking it.
- 43:53Katelyn: Yucking again.
- 43:54Katelyn: Look at her.
- 43:54Katelyn: Well, look at her yucking.
- 43:56Katelyn: Yucking it up.
- 43:57Katelyn: Stop yucking up.
- 43:57Katelyn: Stop yucking it up, Megan.
- 43:59Katelyn: Go stand in the corner and stare at people like you want.
- 44:03Megan: Go ahead.
- 44:03Megan: And I'll be like, thank you.
- 44:05Katelyn: Yeah.
- 44:05Katelyn: People watching is so real.
- 44:07Katelyn: Yeah, dead dead face people watching.
- 44:09Katelyn: Oh, it's just a joy.
- 44:11Megan: Dead face people watching.
- 44:12Megan: That's what it is.
- 44:12Megan: That's all we want to do is like not have to make facial expressions and just observe other people.
- 44:18Megan: It's like we're not judging, we're just observing.
- 44:21Megan: It's just it's funny too.
- 44:24Megan: Speaking of facial expressions, because I think this is part of you know how I adapted, is I will have I use my face to be expressive because I think that people didn't often understand where it was coming from.
- 44:36Megan: So I had to like use my face.
- 44:38Megan: Make it clear with like the like it's not yeah, yeah.
- 44:42Megan: I'm happy.
- 44:43Megan: Yeah, I don't like this.
- 44:45Megan: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:46Megan: If you're listening, I just made very ginormous facial expressions to match those things.
- 44:51Megan: However, I will, because I'm not completely connected to my facial expression, whatever the last one was will all often stay on my face.
- 45:01Megan: And then I'll be like, I'll turn my head and be listening to someone.
- 45:04Megan: They're like, what is happening right now?
- 45:06Megan: And I'm like, what do you mean?
- 45:07Megan: And they're like, what are you so happy about?
- 45:09Megan: Or like what are you so mad about?
- 45:11Megan: And I'm like, I'm not mad at all.
- 45:12Megan: And they're like, you look like you're really mad.
- 45:15Megan: And I'm like, oh, I was just working out a problem over here in my like when I turned over here, and but I left that expression on my face as I turned to you because I needed people to know that I was working on a problem.
- 45:27Megan: And now, anyways, that's a that's a little side note of facial expressions.
- 45:33Megan: So real.
- 45:34Katelyn: And also like the delayed processing, too, right?
- 45:37Katelyn: Like people will say a bunch of stuff to you and you won't hear it, but then you'll hear it.
- 45:42Katelyn: Like the delayed auditory processing, like so your face is maybe still attached to that a little bit.
- 45:46Katelyn: I just have so many, like there's one particular like embarrassing childhood story where like in church somebody said something happy, like during the prayer request or whatever, and then someone said something sad, and I started clapping because the whole church clapped for the happy thing.
- 46:01Katelyn: And so, like, poor like nine-year-old Katelyn is like embarrassed as hell, you know?
- 46:06Katelyn: And like, and oh my god.
- 46:09Katelyn: But obviously, like didn't mean it, you know.
- 46:11Megan: Like Do you have do you know for sure that you have auditory processing disorder?
- 46:16Katelyn: Um, I mean, I just have like very clear anecdotal examples of like somebody says something and then like two minutes later I will answer the question.
- 46:25Megan: Do you like captions when you're watching movies and stuff?
- 46:28Katelyn: I do now, I didn't initially.
- 46:30Megan: Oh, interesting.
- 46:31Katelyn: Okay.
- 46:31Katelyn: Yeah.
- 46:31Katelyn: I don't know.
- 46:32Katelyn: I don't know.
- 46:33Katelyn: I don't know.
- 46:33Katelyn: I don't know.
- 46:34Katelyn: But okay, we're almost running out of time, and I gotta respect your time.
- 46:37Katelyn: And I will I could talk to you for a whole another hour, but you have like a life same thing.
- 46:42Katelyn: Oh my gosh.
- 46:45Katelyn: And I also am like, oh my gosh, I feel like we didn't even talk about you that much.
- 46:48Katelyn: I just talked about like your expertise and your business.
- 46:50Katelyn: And like your business is like, I mean, we both expertise.
- 46:53Katelyn: I mean, right, you are.
- 46:55Katelyn: But no, but like honestly, and I I think we are similar in the fact that like we love what we do, so it is a little bit, aka a lot of it part of our identity, right?
- 47:03Katelyn: But there's other parts to you, right?
- 47:04Katelyn: And you did not to like your music side, you're this side, you're that side.
- 47:07Katelyn: I was thinking about this leading up to our conversation and just thinking about how I have so many cool friends who have seven different lives each, you know, and it's just really cool.
- 47:15Katelyn: And then they still like find a way to merge it all.
- 47:18Katelyn: You have like so many different experiences, and you you have this way of like stringing them all together that like makes an impact on the world.
- 47:25Katelyn: It's freaking cool.
- 47:26Megan: Impact which.
- 47:27Megan: Yeah.
- 47:29Megan: Making magic, helping people make their magic.
- 47:32Katelyn: With that, do you want to tell the people what you're excited about, what's coming up?
- 47:36Katelyn: So, yeah, tell the people about that, where can they find you?
- 47:38Katelyn: Uh, we're gonna have you on again because I want to talk to you again and I want to talk more about like you and your background and things that I don't even know.
- 47:46Katelyn: I want to know about.
- 47:47Megan: So, anytime.
- 47:48Megan: I think actually, though, you do know everything.

- 48:37Megan: When she goes, she goes.
- 48:40Megan: Yes, and TEDx Queens U 2026.
- 48:44Megan: That's happening in January.
- 48:46Megan: So January is one of my busiest months because I'm working on the TEDx and I'm also coaching TEDx talks in my Thriving Visibility program.
- 48:55Megan: So January is usually pretty intense with speeches.
- 49:00Katelyn: Do you have five seconds to tell me about this like jumping back into the speaking world yourself?
- 49:07Katelyn: Do you know what I'm saying?
- 49:08Katelyn: Like you stepping on stage again.
- 49:09Katelyn: What is what's that been like?
- 49:11Katelyn: What's that looking like?
- 49:12Megan: It's been great.
- 49:13Megan: I'm finding the things that I really like to do.
- 49:16Megan: So I do a lot of interviewing at like festivals.
- 49:19Megan: So I talk with creators sort of in live situations with after they've presented their work, whether it's a film or music.
- 49:26Megan: And coming up, I'm hosting and emceeing this incredible event that's happening in Kingston where we're bringing the icon Jeannie Becker, who's the been the host of fashion television for, I don't know, since the certainly since the 90s.
- 49:41Megan: And that's I really enjoy that.
- 49:44Megan: Like I love an interview style, I love a back and forth, a one-on-one.
- 49:48Megan: That is a strength of mine.
- 49:50Megan: And so I certainly love giving talks and I, you know, I did one woman shows, and I'm good.
- 49:55Megan: I can get up on stage and and do a lot of that, but I really enjoy the back and forth of connecting with the audience over something that we're both excited about, or chatting and interviewing with folks and getting to know their, you know, incredible lives.
- 50:10Megan: Love it.
- 50:12Megan: Love it.
- 50:12Megan: I love it too.
- 50:13Megan: Megan, thank you for your time today.
