- 0:00Speaker 1: Others said that it is Elias, and others said that
- 0:05Speaker 1: it is a prophet or one of the prophets. Mark
- 0:09Speaker 1: 6.15 Through the life of John the Baptist, I see
- 0:14Speaker 1: that the ultimate sign of a life well lived is
- 0:18Speaker 1: to say that no matter where I end up, I
- 0:21Speaker 1: can with full confidence say that I lived and represented
- 0:26Speaker 1: Christ in everything I did. In the face of persecution,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I will praise you. In the face of ridicule, I
- 0:36Speaker 1: will praise you. Even when my head is on the
- 0:40Speaker 1: chopping block and I could lose everything, I know that
- 0:44Speaker 1: in Jesus, He'll restore what the enemy has stolen from me.
- 0:50Speaker 1: My strength comes from the fact that Jesus conquered sin
- 0:53Speaker 1: and death. And because He did, Conquering the trials and
- 0:58Speaker 1: obstacles on the journey to my destiny is a given.
- 1:02Speaker 1: For greater is He who is in me than he
- 1:06Speaker 1: that is in the world. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank
- 1:13Speaker 1: you for praying with us today. Continue your time with
- 1:16Speaker 1: God by listening to today's Bible story. Brought to you
- 1:21Speaker 1: by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:32Speaker 2: John the Baptist. In our last story, Jesus healed a
- 1:36Speaker 2: man who had been lame and sick for over 38 years.
- 1:41Speaker 2: The man had been sick for so long that he
- 1:43Speaker 2: lost all hope of being healed. More so, he fell
- 1:47Speaker 2: into a cycle of bitterness. He felt helpless, alone, and
- 1:52Speaker 2: angry at the world. Yet one moment with Jesus changed
- 1:55Speaker 2: his life forever, and the Pharisees continued to hate him
- 1:59Speaker 2: for his mighty works. Now, We learn about the fate
- 2:03Speaker 2: of John the Baptist, the man who prepared the way
- 2:06Speaker 2: of Jesus meets a bitter end. However, John's story does
- 2:10Speaker 2: not end without hope. It ends with a promise inspired
- 2:15Speaker 2: by the Gospels.
- 2:19Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:21Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:24Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:28Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:30Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:34Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:36Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:39Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:42Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:45Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:49Speaker 3: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 2:52Speaker 3: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgram.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 2:59Speaker 3: you for your support. In yesterday's episode, we heard how
- 3:04Speaker 3: Jesus healed a man who was crippled and helpless, even hopeless.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Years of being overlooked by society and left alone to
- 3:12Speaker 3: fend for himself had left this man stuck and bitter,
- 3:16Speaker 3: plagued with a sense of scarcity and hopelessness. But Jesus
- 3:20Speaker 3: changed it all with his words of healing and comfort. Still,
- 3:24Speaker 3: the religious crowd, led by the Pharisees, hated Jesus and
- 3:28Speaker 3: for challenging their tight-fisted rule over the people's hearts. Today,
- 3:33Speaker 3: we'll discover how John the Baptist's earthly story ends. This
- 3:37Speaker 3: man who heralded the coming of the Messiah will die
- 3:40Speaker 3: at the hands of an evil, hateful king and his wife.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Let's listen to the Word of God now.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Blood sprayed across the stone walls of John's jail cell.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Herod's guards drove their fists into his stomach, then across
- 3:56Speaker 2: his head. John's grunts echoed through the prison halls as
- 4:00Speaker 2: they relentlessly beat him. He fell to the floor, unable
- 4:04Speaker 2: to prop himself up. Before he could take a breath,
- 4:07Speaker 2: a guard's foot went upward and cracked a few of
- 4:09Speaker 2: his ribs. He screamed in agony and closed his eyes.
- 4:14Speaker 2: All he could hear were the guards leaving his jail cell.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Then all went black. John had been captured by Herod.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He was taken because he called out against Herod, who
- 4:26Speaker 2: stole his brother's wife. Herodias! Out of anger, Herod captured
- 4:30Speaker 2: John to silence him. So he wrought in his cell
- 4:34Speaker 2: until Herod decided what to do with him. Even though
- 4:37Speaker 2: John was captured, Herod still feared him. He knew that
- 4:41Speaker 2: he was a righteous man, and John held the quiet
- 4:44Speaker 2: strength of a prophet. However, Herodias, Herod's stolen wife, teemed
- 4:50Speaker 2: with hatred against him. She wanted his head rolling off
- 4:53Speaker 2: his shoulders. She wanted him hung from his own entrails.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Her contempt for him ran deep. It was Herod's birthday,
- 5:01Speaker 2: and a large party was held in his honor. Drinks
- 5:04Speaker 2: flowed endlessly, and Herod grew loud and boisterous. Herodias watched
- 5:09Speaker 2: Herod laugh among his friends. She knew that he was
- 5:12Speaker 2: in prime condition to manipulate. Herodias sent out her daughter,
- 5:18Speaker 2: a beautiful young woman, to dance before Herod and his guests.
- 5:22Speaker 2: She moved sensually to the erotic music. Herod locked his
- 5:26Speaker 2: gaze onto her young hips. He was mesmerized and aroused.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Dull of thinking, Herod blurted out, Ask me anything. His
- 5:36Speaker 2: words slurred and his cheeks blushed. Ask me anything and
- 5:40Speaker 2: I will do it. I will give you up to
- 5:43Speaker 2: half my kingdom. The room was hot and the daughter
- 5:47Speaker 2: moved sensually towards Herod. Her fingers wrapped around a few
- 5:51Speaker 2: strands of his hair. She leaned her lips closely towards
- 5:54Speaker 2: Herod's ear and whispered, Give me the head of John
- 5:57Speaker 2: the Baptist. Herod's eyes widened at the request. Her words
- 6:02Speaker 2: sobered him. He looked at his friends. They were expecting
- 6:05Speaker 2: him to keep his word. Additionally, he thought there may
- 6:09Speaker 2: be a chance for him to sleep with his stepdaughter.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Out of embarrassment, drunkenness, and foolishness, Herod sent for his
- 6:16Speaker 2: men to execute John. John's cell doors opened abruptly. He
- 6:21Speaker 2: saw the silhouette of two guards holding chains and an axe.
- 6:25Speaker 2: John sighed deeply. He knew it was time. He stood
- 6:29Speaker 2: to his feet and walked towards them. They bound him
- 6:32Speaker 2: and drug him out to the back of the palace.
- 6:35Speaker 2: John thought about his life and purpose. He had proclaimed
- 6:38Speaker 2: and prepared the way of Jesus. Thousands had followed him
- 6:42Speaker 2: and then left him to follow the Messiah. As John
- 6:45Speaker 2: was shoved to his knees, he remembered the words he
- 6:48Speaker 2: once spoke on the Jordan River. He must increase and
- 6:52Speaker 2: I must decrease. The words held much more weight now.
- 6:56Speaker 2: As John's head was shoved under the cold stone table,
- 7:00Speaker 2: he thought about the Christ. His joy was complete and
- 7:03Speaker 2: his purpose was fulfilled. Death would be a welcomed friend.
- 7:07Speaker 2: For the one who came after him would prove death
- 7:10Speaker 2: to be powerless. He would strip away its sting and
- 7:13Speaker 2: life everlasting would follow. John smiled, closed his eyes and
- 7:17Speaker 2: allowed the axe to fall on his neck. John's head
- 7:21Speaker 2: was handed to Herodia on a silver platter. Her pupils
- 7:24Speaker 2: widened at the sight of it. However, the momentary pleasure
- 7:28Speaker 2: was replaced with sickness. She thought John the Baptist was
- 7:31Speaker 2: the source of her embarrassment and shame. However, looking at
- 7:35Speaker 2: his lifeless head laying on a platter offered her no solace.
- 7:40Speaker 2: She still felt empty. Her revenge fell flat, as all
- 7:44Speaker 2: revenge does. Her soul would not be satisfied. and her
- 7:48Speaker 2: sins would eventually find her out. The next day, John's
- 7:52Speaker 2: friends gathered his body and laid it in a tomb.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Months had passed, and Jesus' name had become so well
- 7:58Speaker 2: known that even Herod's servants were talking about him. He
- 8:02Speaker 2: heard of his miracles and words of power. Herod's heart raced,
- 8:06Speaker 2: for he had a feeling that Jesus was John himself
- 8:08Speaker 2: risen from the dead. He was wrong, of course. John
- 8:12Speaker 2: was buried into dirt and would not raise again. However,
- 8:16Speaker 2: Jesus would one day die, and unlike John, he would
- 8:20Speaker 2: rise again. He would rise above the sting of death.
- 8:24Speaker 2: He would rise above the power of sin and darkness.
- 8:27Speaker 2: He would rise where all men fell, and those who
- 8:31Speaker 2: believed in him would rise with him.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Today's reading begins in a prison cell. John the Baptist,
- 8:41Speaker 3: the prophet who foretold the coming Messiah, had angered the
- 8:44Speaker 3: Jewish ruler, King Herod. This was the son of the
- 8:48Speaker 3: maniacal Herod the Great who tried to have an infant
- 8:51Speaker 3: Jesus killed. And like his father, this Herod was not
- 8:55Speaker 3: opposed to spilling the blood of those who challenged him
- 8:58Speaker 3: or spoke out against him. And that's precisely what John
- 9:01Speaker 3: the Baptist had done. He'd called out Herod for stealing
- 9:05Speaker 3: his own brother's wife, a wicked woman named Herodias. The
- 9:09Speaker 3: rule of these two and their persecution of John is
- 9:12Speaker 3: reminiscent of some of Israel's evil kings and queens, like
- 9:17Speaker 3: Ahab and Jezebel. They had no regard for men of God,
- 9:21Speaker 3: so as John sat in a cell, they were still
- 9:24Speaker 3: not satisfied. He needed to be disposed of, canceled. But
- 9:29Speaker 3: Herod was also fearful of the people who loved John,
- 9:33Speaker 3: so he was reluctant to have him killed. His wife, Herodias, however,
- 9:37Speaker 3: had no interest in such caution. So she hatched a plan,
- 9:42Speaker 3: an evil plot, to ensure that John would be put
- 9:44Speaker 3: to death. She sent her daughter, Salome, to dance for
- 9:48Speaker 3: Herod and his court on his birthday. Herod, surely intoxicated
- 9:53Speaker 3: from his partying, was pleased with Salome's dance and vowed
- 9:57Speaker 3: to give her whatever she asked. This is always a
- 10:01Speaker 3: dangerous promise to make, and Herod would soon regret his offer,
- 10:06Speaker 3: for at her mother's direction she made her request. She
- 10:10Speaker 3: wanted the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And so John, after having served God's purpose for him
- 10:17Speaker 3: on earth, went quietly into death that day. His head
- 10:21Speaker 3: was cut off without any ceremony or dignity for this
- 10:25Speaker 3: man of God. But there is no doubt that when
- 10:28Speaker 3: he entered eternity, he was in the presence of God immediately,
- 10:32Speaker 3: rejoicing in heaven, and heard the words, Well done, good
- 10:36Speaker 3: and faithful servant. He had announced and made a way
- 10:39Speaker 3: for the coming of the Lord the Messiah, Jesus, who
- 10:42Speaker 3: was going to take away the sins of the world.
- 10:45Speaker 3: In Matthew 14 verses 13 to 14, Here's what we read.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in
- 10:53Speaker 3: a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when
- 10:57Speaker 3: the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from
- 10:59Speaker 3: the towns. And when he went ashore, he saw a
- 11:02Speaker 3: great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed
- 11:06Speaker 3: their sick. Jesus mourned the death of his forerunner and
- 11:10Speaker 3: friend and family member, John the Baptist. This man had
- 11:15Speaker 3: meant so much to the Lord Jesus. And though he
- 11:19Speaker 3: isolated himself in grief for a while, he soon saw
- 11:22Speaker 3: the need of the people who followed him. Christ had
- 11:25Speaker 3: compassion and mercy upon each one. It's another sign of
- 11:29Speaker 3: God's unending grace and mercy and his willingness to hear
- 11:33Speaker 3: and answer the cries of his people. You see, Jesus
- 11:37Speaker 3: is God, and in his deity he can heal. He
- 11:40Speaker 3: is also man. In his humanity, he had compassion for people.
- 11:46Speaker 3: So as God and man, He loved each one. Jesus
- 11:50Speaker 3: knew that soon he also would die. He would be killed, crucified,
- 11:55Speaker 3: and Herod himself would also have a hand in it.
- 11:58Speaker 3: But unlike John, whose body remained in the ground, Jesus
- 12:01Speaker 3: would rise victorious, conquering sin and death as the Savior,
- 12:06Speaker 3: the Redeemer of all who would call upon his name.
- 12:09Speaker 3: John's life was well lived because he fulfilled his purpose.
- 12:14Speaker 3: He served with courage and boldness and faithfulness all the
- 12:17Speaker 3: way to heaven. Oh, that the same might be said
- 12:20Speaker 3: of each of us as we live and die and
- 12:24Speaker 3: then experience the eternal reward of our Savior and our God.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Dear Lord, we thank you for the tremendous example of
- 12:33Speaker 3: John the Baptist and how his bold, courageous, faithful life
- 12:37Speaker 3: shows us how to live and how to die. May
- 12:41Speaker 3: we live in your grace and may we die in
- 12:44Speaker 3: your peace. And all along, May we fulfill your purpose
- 12:48Speaker 3: for our lives. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
