- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:08Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Bar Blazarre and Lazarre.
- 0:12Speaker 1: He everybody nailed it, joined as always by our Here
- 0:19Speaker 1: is Evan Lazar and Alex bars.
- 0:22Speaker 3: If you get that game from Will Campbell for seventeen
- 0:25Speaker 3: games great, like the blocking, the penalties, like you said,
- 0:29Speaker 3: like that can't happen if he If that happens in December,
- 0:33Speaker 3: I'll hold it against him a lot more than happening
- 0:35Speaker 3: in his first NFL start.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I like how you're doing this podcast with David Andrews
- 0:39Speaker 2: because now you're interested in the offense.
- 0:40Speaker 3: I was always interested, but now I just feel more
- 0:43Speaker 3: that's your No, don't say it was never interested.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Not I'm saying interested in takes about it. Oh no,
- 0:49Speaker 2: really I had, like you know, you just kind of
- 0:51Speaker 2: this is.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Your area events for no. I love it just to
- 0:53Speaker 3: fault to you and like you looking at it.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You did a podcast with David andrew Have you.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Listened to it?
- 0:58Speaker 2: I have not to it, but just two now, Will
- 1:06Speaker 2: Campbell's a good jumping off point to this. I'm not
- 1:09Speaker 2: ready to declare victory yet on Will Campbell Alex after
- 1:12Speaker 2: two games one really really good game and one I
- 1:15Speaker 2: think decent game like the opener could have been a
- 1:19Speaker 2: little bit better in some areas, no doubt about it.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I'm not ready to declare victory yet on Will Campbell,
- 1:24Speaker 2: but it's certainly trending in the right direction. On Will Campbell.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I feel pretty good about what he's done over the
- 1:29Speaker 2: first two games. Feel pretty good about the Patriots right now,
- 1:32Speaker 2: good about their offense. It's amazing how much better you
- 1:36Speaker 2: feel coming off a game, not necessarily even just that
- 1:39Speaker 2: they won, but a game where the quarterback plays well.
- 1:42Speaker 2: It's just the whole thing. Even if they go out
- 1:45Speaker 2: on Sunday against Pittsburgh and lose, if Drake May gets
- 1:49Speaker 2: into this shootout, back and forth game with Aaron Rodgers like,
- 1:54Speaker 2: you're still going to come out of that game feeling
- 1:56Speaker 2: really good about it. I want to talk offense. I'm
- 1:59Speaker 2: gonna start with offense. Of course, we're gonna talk a
- 2:01Speaker 2: little bit about what's going on with the Patriots defense.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Not as good Alex on that side of the ball.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Maybe some more problems over there than what we've seen
- 2:11Speaker 2: with the offense. Are gonna do three up, three down?
- 2:13Speaker 2: We're gonna talk little Steelers. We'll open the show up
- 2:15Speaker 2: in the second half to your lovely calls and emails.
- 2:19Speaker 2: But it's Evan Lazarre, Alex Barth, Alex behind the Glass,
- 2:22Speaker 2: Patriots Catch twenty two, and I want to start with
- 2:26Speaker 2: the offense. And I just want to say that there
- 2:35Speaker 2: was two schools of thought after last week. I crashed
- 2:39Speaker 2: out after the game last week against the Raiders, I
- 2:42Speaker 2: crashed out. I was very unhappy about what I saw
- 2:45Speaker 2: for the Patriots offense. I was really disappointed and kind
- 2:50Speaker 2: of perplexed. And I think what I missed and last
- 2:54Speaker 2: week's show because I let the emotional side of me
- 2:59Speaker 2: get the best of me, and I kind of forgot
- 3:01Speaker 2: to mention this last week. One of the things that
- 3:05Speaker 2: I missed was the fact that in training camp we
- 3:10Speaker 2: saw all of the bells and whistles that we saw
- 3:13Speaker 2: against the Dolphins that we did not see in week
- 3:16Speaker 2: one against the Raiders. We saw the motion, we saw
- 3:19Speaker 2: the bootlegs, we saw the running backs getting vertical out
- 3:23Speaker 2: of the backfield on wheel routes and things like that,
- 3:25Speaker 2: and then they played the Raiders and none of it
- 3:27Speaker 2: was there, Like it just they completely stripped it down.
- 3:31Speaker 2: They almost treated it like a fourth preseason game, and
- 3:33Speaker 2: they it just completely went out the door, and I
- 3:36Speaker 2: was like, where is all the cool stuff? Like, where
- 3:39Speaker 2: is all the fun stuff? Josh McDaniels, Where did it go?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Because you were doing it in Minnesota and joint practices,
- 3:45Speaker 2: you're doing it against Washington and joint practices. And then
- 3:49Speaker 2: we got to the opener against the Raiders and I
- 3:52Speaker 2: was given nothing to work with, and I was like,
- 3:55Speaker 2: where's all the fun stuff? Then fast forward a week
- 3:58Speaker 2: to Miami and then now this is more like it.
- 4:02Speaker 2: This is what we were this is what we were
- 4:04Speaker 2: looking for. So as much as I fully admit that
- 4:07Speaker 2: I crashed out in week one, I'm not going to
- 4:11Speaker 2: allow for See, you should have been patient, you should
- 4:15Speaker 2: have given it more time. It was only one game.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm not going to allow for that. Because the numbers,
- 4:21Speaker 2: and I want to lay out some of the numbers
- 4:23Speaker 2: here in a second speak to this. It was such
- 4:26Speaker 2: a stark difference between what they called and what they
- 4:30Speaker 2: ran in week one to what they ran in week
- 4:33Speaker 2: two that I'm sorry, I'm not going to just sit
- 4:35Speaker 2: there and say that I overreacted to week one because
- 4:40Speaker 2: it was just a completely different thing. Like they completely
- 4:43Speaker 2: threw out what they did in the opener against the
- 4:45Speaker 2: Raiders that didn't work, and then did all the cool
- 4:47Speaker 2: stuff that we were seeing in training camp over the
- 4:50Speaker 2: summer and it paid dividends. Drake May was fantastic. This
- 4:55Speaker 2: was his best game as a pro. I think by
- 4:57Speaker 2: all accounts, whether you want to go I test that,
- 5:00Speaker 2: you want to go stats, whether you want to go efficiency,
- 5:03Speaker 2: pff gray, whatever you want to look at just across
- 5:06Speaker 2: the board. But I want to stick on McDaniel's in
- 5:09Speaker 2: the scheme because you know that that's what I do.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And then we'll give Drake his flowers. Here. So a
- 5:13Speaker 2: couple of numbers, and I published this in after further
- 5:16Speaker 2: review this week. If all these numbers that I'm about
- 5:19Speaker 2: to throw at you overwhelm your brain and you want
- 5:21Speaker 2: to read them instead of hearing me say them, then
- 5:24Speaker 2: you can go there. So in week one, the shotgun
- 5:28Speaker 2: rate shotgun, how often Drake May was in shotgun almost
- 5:32Speaker 2: seventy eight percent of the time in shotgun in week one.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That was down to forty two percent of the time
- 5:39Speaker 2: in week two. The other big one that really stood
- 5:42Speaker 2: out to me, which is a stat that I am
- 5:45Speaker 2: really starting to love that next gen kind of combines
- 5:49Speaker 2: runs in play actions into run actions, so it's all
- 5:52Speaker 2: one number baked in run plays, rush attempts combined with
- 5:57Speaker 2: play action dropbacks. You with me, all right? So in
- 6:00Speaker 2: week one thirty five percent run action rate for the Patriots.
- 6:06Speaker 2: In week two they almost doubled that sixty percent in
- 6:09Speaker 2: week two, so they were under center more. They were
- 6:12Speaker 2: run plus play actioning more. And then, of course the
- 6:15Speaker 2: big one the motion rate. The motion rate increases by
- 6:19Speaker 2: over fifty percent sixty nine point two percent in week two,
- 6:23Speaker 2: seventeen point six percent in week one, the lowest rate
- 6:27Speaker 2: of motion in the NFL in Week one to one
- 6:29Speaker 2: of the highest rate rates of motion in the NFL
- 6:33Speaker 2: in Week two. They completely changed up what they did
- 6:37Speaker 2: and whether or not in week one we were building
- 6:40Speaker 2: to this point whether or not the game script or
- 6:43Speaker 2: the game flow got away from them in Week one,
- 6:46Speaker 2: which I'm also really not buying, because that game never
- 6:49Speaker 2: really got away from them against the Raiders. It wasn't
- 6:52Speaker 2: like they all of a sudden until the fourth quarter
- 6:54Speaker 2: when they got down by ten points. They weren't ever
- 6:57Speaker 2: out of that game where you had to get into
- 7:00Speaker 2: drop back passing. They chose to not go this direction
- 7:04Speaker 2: in week one and we two they did, and that
- 7:07Speaker 2: brings us to Drake May which just my opening take
- 7:12Speaker 2: on Drake May. I actually thought the fourth down throat
- 7:17Speaker 2: a digs is what got him going? Are that converting
- 7:20Speaker 2: the fourth down on not punting or turning the ball
- 7:23Speaker 2: over on downs there on? The opening drive got him
- 7:28Speaker 2: some confidence, got him going in the game. And then
- 7:31Speaker 2: they started hitting the moving pockets right and you start
- 7:34Speaker 2: moving him, moving his feet, getting him out on the run,
- 7:39Speaker 2: having him read half the field instead of reading full
- 7:43Speaker 2: field progressions, you know, reading more when you bootlegre you're
- 7:49Speaker 2: reading more like posture, leverage of the defender. You're not
- 7:52Speaker 2: getting so caught up in is it one high? Is
- 7:55Speaker 2: it two high? As a man? Is its zone? Like
- 7:57Speaker 2: all these different intricacies in the drop back game that
- 8:00Speaker 2: you have to think about when you cut the field
- 8:02Speaker 2: in half like that, all you're reading is one guy,
- 8:05Speaker 2: like does this guy, you know, does he keep containing?
- 8:08Speaker 2: First of all, right, does he bite or not bite?
- 8:11Speaker 2: But then also is he playing it high to low
- 8:13Speaker 2: or low to high? And where's the opening there on
- 8:15Speaker 2: that side of the field. It simplifies things. He's great
- 8:18Speaker 2: on the move, he's got the power arm to throw
- 8:22Speaker 2: the ball from off platform on the move. So a
- 8:25Speaker 2: combination of the fourth down play to Digs and then
- 8:28Speaker 2: the boots after that leak obviously, and then the touchdown
- 8:31Speaker 2: pass to Hollins that really I thought had him cooking
- 8:35Speaker 2: like that really got him into this game and settled
- 8:37Speaker 2: him down, and then he was absolutely fantastic from start
- 8:41Speaker 2: to finish in this game for sixty minutes. So the
- 8:44Speaker 2: play calling changed. I thought that this is exactly the
- 8:47Speaker 2: way that they need to run this offense. Not to
- 8:49Speaker 2: toot my own horn or pat myself on the back,
- 8:51Speaker 2: but we talked about all this stuff last week, the
- 8:54Speaker 2: importance of the run game, the importance of play action,
- 8:57Speaker 2: the importance of motion. All of those things we touched
- 9:00Speaker 2: on in the show last week. They did all of
- 9:03Speaker 2: them this week. I'm a happy camper. I'm a happy
- 9:06Speaker 2: camper today. That was exactly what I was looking for.
- 9:09Speaker 2: What were your big picture takeaways from this game?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think how much they changed the offense and
- 9:13Speaker 3: a lot of what you just said, I think, especially
- 9:15Speaker 3: getting may on the move, rolling them out the moving pockets.
- 9:19Speaker 3: But part of the reason you're able to do that
- 9:21Speaker 3: with such success is the run game. You look at
- 9:24Speaker 3: the end. It was early in the game, but even
- 9:26Speaker 3: still the way they were running the ball and the
- 9:27Speaker 3: league played to Austin Hooper. You go go back and
- 9:31Speaker 3: watch that play and watch all three of the Dolphins
- 9:33Speaker 3: linebackers on that play. They all bite incredibly hard. And
- 9:38Speaker 3: what happens is Tyrell Thoughtson ends up in a spot
- 9:41Speaker 3: where he essentially has to cover three people. They're in
- 9:44Speaker 3: zone and the other two linebackers are just so far
- 9:48Speaker 3: downhill they're kind of out of the play, and he's
- 9:50Speaker 3: got Jack west Over going one way, he's got Austin
- 9:52Speaker 3: Hooper going the other, and then I think the back
- 9:54Speaker 3: was in there too. There was somebody else kind of
- 9:56Speaker 3: in that area. And he starts following west Over and
- 9:59Speaker 3: Austin Hooper runs the route up along the sideline all alone.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And honestly, you know, not to nitpick, because Drake may
- 10:05Speaker 3: was awesome, like you said, but if it's a better throw,
- 10:07Speaker 3: a Hooper maybe walks in with a touchdown. So their
- 10:10Speaker 3: ability to run the ball, their ability to run the
- 10:12Speaker 3: ball between the tackles, their ability to run the ball.
- 10:15Speaker 3: When I say without gimmicks, they definitely dressed it up
- 10:17Speaker 3: a little bit. They did some bells and whistles, but
- 10:19Speaker 3: you know, you go back to last week where they
- 10:21Speaker 3: struggled to run the ball and I think they ultimately
- 10:23Speaker 3: ran for like three point four yards per carry against
- 10:25Speaker 3: the Raiders. That number is pretty significantly inflated by that
- 10:29Speaker 3: fake tush push and around a Trevon Henderson, which is
- 10:32Speaker 3: like not a real traditional run play. You're not building
- 10:36Speaker 3: anything off of that outside of maybe keeping the other
- 10:38Speaker 3: team on us if you want to run a toush push.
- 10:40Speaker 3: So in terms of just you know, meat and potatoes runs, yeah,
- 10:45Speaker 3: and some it's dressed up with motion, but things that
- 10:47Speaker 3: he runs you can build off of runs you're gonna
- 10:49Speaker 3: call on a regular basis. They were much better. They
- 10:52Speaker 3: were much better between the tackles, and some of that
- 10:54Speaker 3: goes to Drake May. So I'll reference to David Andrews
- 10:56Speaker 3: podcast again. Something that he pointed out is one of
- 10:59Speaker 3: May's best plays was a run play where he motions
- 11:03Speaker 3: he so they motion Hunter Henry out from the fallback
- 11:05Speaker 3: to the left side off tackle, and then he may
- 11:09Speaker 3: see something pulls mac hollins in literally points out the assignment.
- 11:14Speaker 3: They then run, they pull Jared Wilson they run behind him.
- 11:18Speaker 3: That was Ramondre's twenty one yard run. And it's set
- 11:20Speaker 3: up because Drake makes that adjustment, calls it out the
- 11:23Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, so building. And then they used a
- 11:26Speaker 3: similar motion sequence and a similar look on the pass too.
- 11:32Speaker 3: And they did this with a separate motion too in there,
- 11:34Speaker 3: but there's a kind of similar look on the touchdown
- 11:37Speaker 3: to mac hollins. So they were able to run the ball,
- 11:40Speaker 3: they were able to get downhill. I think you saw
- 11:41Speaker 3: in this game why Ramondre Stevenson We've taken a little
- 11:45Speaker 3: bit of heat for kind of Oh, why don't you
- 11:47Speaker 3: want Travon Henderson has involved Haven't you seen how good
- 11:49Speaker 3: he is in the preseason? And I don't think you
- 11:51Speaker 3: can build it all in Vermondre either. I'm not going
- 11:53Speaker 3: to sit here and say that's why Ramondre Stephenson, Ramondre
- 11:56Speaker 3: Stevenson should be their feature back. No, neither one should
- 11:59Speaker 3: be their feature back. But when you get Ormandre a
- 12:02Speaker 3: lane doesn't have to be a big lane, but you
- 12:04Speaker 3: get them a lane and you let him get up
- 12:06Speaker 3: to that second level and now it's a linebacker or
- 12:08Speaker 3: even a safety that he is taking on and he
- 12:10Speaker 3: can try to make that guy miss or at least
- 12:12Speaker 3: he's gonna win the tackle more often than not. What
- 12:14Speaker 3: I mean by that is he's not somebody that's getting
- 12:17Speaker 3: tackled backwards. Right when he gets tackled, he's still falling
- 12:20Speaker 3: forward and picking up some hidden yardage there, a couple
- 12:22Speaker 3: of yards one or two as he gets brought to
- 12:24Speaker 3: the ground. When you can let him get up to
- 12:25Speaker 3: the second level and do that, it really changes how
- 12:29Speaker 3: their whole offense can operate. And he's built for those
- 12:31Speaker 3: body blows and away Travon Henderson isn't. So I think
- 12:33Speaker 3: it all started with the run game. Drake May was awesome.
- 12:35Speaker 3: This was the best game of his career. I think
- 12:37Speaker 3: if you get that level of quarterback played from him regularly,
- 12:40Speaker 3: and by the way, three or four halfs this year,
- 12:43Speaker 3: he's been really good. For whatever that's worth. Because I
- 12:47Speaker 3: know everybody took their victory lap on JJ McCarthy for
- 12:50Speaker 3: playing one good quarter of four.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Last so a lot of your own victory lap.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I'm just saying, if I is it wrong to say
- 12:58Speaker 3: Drake May has played three or four halves a very
- 13:00Speaker 3: good football I know.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I think the first half of the Raiders game was
- 13:05Speaker 2: better than maybe he got credited.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I thought it was solid. It's because of what happened next, right,
- 13:09Speaker 3: and that that can't happen like he's got to sustain,
- 13:11Speaker 3: but he's sustained, didn't turn them all over, by the way,
- 13:13Speaker 3: So I thought he was really good in this game.
- 13:16Speaker 3: But I think it all started with their ability to
- 13:18Speaker 3: finally get the run game going and everything was built
- 13:20Speaker 3: off of that. So much as happy as I am
- 13:24Speaker 3: as he Drake made do it he did, I don't
- 13:25Speaker 3: want to take anything away from him. That was kind
- 13:28Speaker 3: of the expectation that he was going to look like that, right,
- 13:30Speaker 3: And I think the bigger development for me might be
- 13:34Speaker 3: how well they ran the football.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that was what we were harping on
- 13:37Speaker 2: last week. It was you know what I led with
- 13:40Speaker 2: and after further of you after week one, is that
- 13:42Speaker 2: this team is built to run the football, like. They
- 13:46Speaker 2: have to be able to run the football offensively. They
- 13:49Speaker 2: cannot be a drop back pass team that drops back
- 13:52Speaker 2: forty five times a game like that's just not a
- 13:55Speaker 2: winning formula for them. And not only does the run game,
- 13:59Speaker 2: you know, take a load off of that in respect
- 14:02Speaker 2: to volume, but you also start to set things up,
- 14:05Speaker 2: you start to move the pocket, which helps the offensive
- 14:08Speaker 2: line like that. Drake May attempted what twenty three passes
- 14:11Speaker 2: in this game, I think it was, and then five
- 14:14Speaker 2: of them were on moving pockets. So really all you're
- 14:17Speaker 2: doing is you're drop back passing seventeen times for the
- 14:20Speaker 2: totality of a game. So when you start to look at.
- 14:23Speaker 3: The Nithers, couple like screens in there too, right.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So I'm not trying to discredit the offensive line and
- 14:29Speaker 2: what they did in pass protection, because I thought that
- 14:31Speaker 2: they were really good in this game. But that's the
- 14:34Speaker 2: formula for this Patriots team because now you're shrinking the
- 14:38Speaker 2: amount of exposures to drop that passing for that offensive line.
- 14:42Speaker 2: So now Will Campbell has fewer true pass sets, Morgan
- 14:46Speaker 2: Moses has true pass sets, Garrett Bradberry and Jared Wilson
- 14:50Speaker 2: in the interior have fewer true pass sets, And it
- 14:53Speaker 2: just takes away all of the sort of flaring ups
- 14:58Speaker 2: that we saw last week where the as protection late
- 15:00Speaker 2: in the game and against the Raiders gets out of whack.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Drake May has more sprays because he's throwing the football
- 15:06Speaker 2: more like this is the way that they need to
- 15:09Speaker 2: play football. Offensively and then just be ultra efficient with
- 15:12Speaker 2: their passes, which is exactly what they were. And that's
- 15:16Speaker 2: the type of offense that they want to build and
- 15:17Speaker 2: want to be. And this goes back all the way
- 15:20Speaker 2: to January, which I'm probably going to reference a decent
- 15:22Speaker 2: amount here today. Was that introductory press conference by Mike
- 15:27Speaker 2: Rabel where he said he wants to be an efficient
- 15:30Speaker 2: passing team, not a high volume passing team, but an
- 15:32Speaker 2: efficient passing team. And in week one or excuse me,
- 15:36Speaker 2: week two, Drake May led the entire NFL and expected
- 15:39Speaker 2: points outed per dropback. He was the most efficient quarterback
- 15:42Speaker 2: in the league in week two. That's what they're looking for.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Wasn't that they threw it fifty times. They threw it
- 15:47Speaker 2: twenty three or twenty five times or whatever it was
- 15:50Speaker 2: with all the scrambles, and they were just really efficient
- 15:54Speaker 2: in those twenty five dropbacks. And that's exactly what this
- 15:57Speaker 2: team is built for and what they're looking for, which
- 16:00Speaker 2: Drake May just to kind of close the loop on
- 16:03Speaker 2: him before we move on to some of the other things. Oh, actually,
- 16:06Speaker 2: really quickly, I want to just take you back off
- 16:08Speaker 2: your point about Remandre. One of the things that I
- 16:10Speaker 2: always monitor with Remandre is Remandre to me is a
- 16:15Speaker 2: head of steam running back like he's somebody that needs
- 16:18Speaker 2: to be able to get through the first level unblocked
- 16:23Speaker 2: or untouched, I should say, so that he can pick
- 16:26Speaker 2: up ahead of steam like, because he breaks tackles when
- 16:29Speaker 2: he's moving at a decent pace. He's not a in
- 16:32Speaker 2: a phone boot jitter bug. I'm going to break tackles
- 16:35Speaker 2: when my feet are standing still. He's a guy that
- 16:38Speaker 2: once he gets downhill, his contact balance and his ability
- 16:42Speaker 2: to avoid tackles in the open field really improves. So
- 16:45Speaker 2: one of the things that next Gen tracks and I'm
- 16:48Speaker 2: stats heavy today, but whatever.
- 16:50Speaker 3: One of the things that Evan's using the nerd stuff.
- 16:52Speaker 2: One of the things that next Gen tracks is how
- 16:55Speaker 2: fast the running back hits the line of scrimmage, Like
- 16:58Speaker 2: what is his speed at the line of scrimmage on
- 17:02Speaker 2: his rush attempts? And every week I always go and
- 17:05Speaker 2: look in to Remondres and see where that was? Where
- 17:09Speaker 2: was that number? And usually when he has a bad game,
- 17:12Speaker 2: that number is very low, and when he has a
- 17:15Speaker 2: good game, that number is higher. And that's exactly how
- 17:17Speaker 2: week one to week two work for the Patriots. So
- 17:20Speaker 2: it all starts with getting the guys on the first
- 17:23Speaker 2: level blocked for him. Once he gets into the second level,
- 17:27Speaker 2: with some speed and some momentum, he's able to make
- 17:30Speaker 2: people miss. With Drake may, I thought what really stood
- 17:34Speaker 2: out to me in this game wasn't necessarily the high
- 17:37Speaker 2: level plays. There were a couple of those, but it
- 17:41Speaker 2: was the lack of negative plays. So he really just
- 17:44Speaker 2: didn't make very many mistakes in this game, never put
- 17:47Speaker 2: the ball in harm's way. I had him for two
- 17:48Speaker 2: minus plays the entire game. I thought that he was
- 17:52Speaker 2: extremely sharp with his decision making. He was decisive, he
- 17:56Speaker 2: protected the football. He was accurate, which is a big thing.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Coming off Week one, he seemed to get his mechanics
- 18:02Speaker 2: back in order and started to throw the ball more accurately.
- 18:06Speaker 2: And then, you know, the one play that I think
- 18:09Speaker 2: I probably watched about fifteen times at this point is
- 18:12Speaker 2: obviously the fifty five yarder to Remandre where he just
- 18:16Speaker 2: makes a hell of a play, you know, great pocket movement.
- 18:20Speaker 2: What I loved so much about that play in terms
- 18:23Speaker 2: of the pocket movement was not necessarily the slide up
- 18:26Speaker 2: in the pocket. It was the fact that he got
- 18:28Speaker 2: his feet settled back down after he slid back up
- 18:31Speaker 2: in the pocket, So get you know, slide up, avoid
- 18:34Speaker 2: the pressure and then get your base back right, get
- 18:37Speaker 2: your feet settled back down instead of trying to throw
- 18:39Speaker 2: the ball from you know, kind of a wonky platform there.
- 18:42Speaker 2: He kind of settles his feet back down, gets himself
- 18:45Speaker 2: balanced again, and then throws the football. That was just
- 18:48Speaker 2: a beautiful play. And then of course he runs in
- 18:50Speaker 2: for six yards in a touchdown at the end of
- 18:53Speaker 2: that drive and kind of just puts the team on
- 18:54Speaker 2: the back on his back and a time where they
- 18:57Speaker 2: really really needed it. So as much as he wasn't
- 19:01Speaker 2: doing a ton of heavy lifting, I thought early on
- 19:03Speaker 2: in this game, he delivered on that drive with a
- 19:06Speaker 2: lot of heavy lifting. So it kind of outset the
- 19:09Speaker 2: fact that they schemed open some stuff early and like
- 19:12Speaker 2: the plan was really good and that contributed to a
- 19:15Speaker 2: lot of the plays early on. And so basically what
- 19:18Speaker 2: I'm saying is is like he only had one big
- 19:20Speaker 2: time throw in this game. Yeah, but I think that
- 19:22Speaker 2: that's a really deceiving stat this week because of how
- 19:25Speaker 2: he hit all the layups early and then of course
- 19:28Speaker 2: he basically let a touchdown drive all by himself in
- 19:30Speaker 2: the second.
- 19:31Speaker 3: He did what he needed to do. I think this
- 19:32Speaker 3: is a the box score under sells how good he
- 19:34Speaker 3: was in this game. I'll give you another example. Everybody's
- 19:36Speaker 3: been waiting for him to get that fourth quarter game
- 19:38Speaker 3: winning drive, right, everybody wants him to get that stat
- 19:41Speaker 3: in the in the box score. Well, they score a
- 19:43Speaker 3: go ahead touchdown with six seconds to go in the third,
- 19:46Speaker 3: so he doesn't get that one, and then the goal
- 19:48Speaker 3: ahead touchdown the fourth quarters on a kick return, So
- 19:51Speaker 3: he ultimately didn't get it, But didn't he feel like
- 19:53Speaker 3: he kind of carried that didn't feel like he kind
- 19:55Speaker 3: of carried them late there. So yeah, I think this
- 19:59Speaker 3: one goes beyond the box score. I just thought, again,
- 20:02Speaker 3: he it felt like he was in and players around
- 20:06Speaker 3: were struggling. Travon Henderson was struggling. He didn't get much
- 20:08Speaker 3: from the wide receivers. I thought the line was fine,
- 20:10Speaker 3: but this felt like him maybe elevating a little bit
- 20:14Speaker 3: and playing above what was given him.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Definitely, the drive in the third quarter was probably the
- 20:19Speaker 2: biggest flash of like Drake may elevating that we've seen
- 20:22Speaker 2: with him as a pro. Just a great throw to
- 20:25Speaker 2: Remandre and like I said, they kind of messed up
- 20:29Speaker 2: the pass protection on the touchdown run. And that's just
- 20:32Speaker 2: the advantage of having a mobile quarterback and a guy
- 20:35Speaker 2: like Drake May that can create out of structure. Now, Judon,
- 20:38Speaker 2: they missed. They messed up the mic point and they
- 20:40Speaker 2: didn't block Jude On coming off the edge, and then
- 20:43Speaker 2: Judon comes unblocked off the edge, and for a lot
- 20:45Speaker 2: of quarterbacks, that's a sack or a throwaway. That's just
- 20:48Speaker 2: the dead play, right. They just can't get anything off
- 20:51Speaker 2: and he just runs away. He just runs away from
- 20:53Speaker 2: Judon and runs into the end zone. Really a great
- 20:58Speaker 2: a great drive, great moment for May. Did I do enough? Gushing?
- 21:02Speaker 2: Did I did? I did?
- 21:03Speaker 3: I did?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yeah? Enough Flowers because now we got to talk about
- 21:08Speaker 2: some of the stuff that that didn't go so well,
- 21:11Speaker 2: and not a lot of it on offense. Like I
- 21:13Speaker 2: don't really have a lot of gripes with the offense
- 21:15Speaker 2: right now. But the Patriots defense is struggling, especially their
- 21:19Speaker 2: pass defense. Their run defense has been okay. I thought
- 21:22Speaker 2: they cleaned it up in the second half. Shut out
- 21:25Speaker 2: to Anthony Jennings who kind of came in this game
- 21:27Speaker 2: in the second half and started to set the edge
- 21:29Speaker 2: and started to get the run defense back in order.
- 21:32Speaker 2: But pass defense wise, the numbers are what they are,
- 21:35Speaker 2: league high six hundred and seventy seven pass yards through
- 21:38Speaker 2: two weeks.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Ten point three yards per tenth league high. They're the
- 21:41Speaker 3: only team in the league that's allowed a three hundred
- 21:43Speaker 3: yard passer in each of the first two games.
- 21:45Speaker 2: So they're thirty first in the league and pass rating,
- 21:47Speaker 2: like we can just rattle off all these numbers like
- 21:49Speaker 2: they're they're in the bottom of the league in pretty
- 21:52Speaker 2: much every statistical category against the pass. And the big
- 21:57Speaker 2: thing to me, just kind of you know, unpacking it
- 22:00Speaker 2: even further with the pass defense, is that this team,
- 22:05Speaker 2: and going back to Carlton Davis's introductory press conference, this
- 22:09Speaker 2: team wanted to play man to man coverage. They wanted
- 22:12Speaker 2: Carlton Davis on one side, Christian Gonzalez on the other side,
- 22:15Speaker 2: man to man across the board and then let that
- 22:18Speaker 2: pass rush heet, you know, make the quarterback hold the football,
- 22:21Speaker 2: jam receivers throw off the timing, make them hold it,
- 22:24Speaker 2: and then you let Milton Williams and Barmore and Landry
- 22:27Speaker 2: and those guys get home. They have not been able
- 22:30Speaker 2: to play man coverage. They've been one of the worst
- 22:31Speaker 2: teams in the league in man coverage as well. They're
- 22:35Speaker 2: giving up over eleven yards per pass attempt in man
- 22:38Speaker 2: coverage through two weeks. So this is not how they
- 22:41Speaker 2: were built. This was not the vision in the offseason
- 22:44Speaker 2: to play this way. So you can take that two ways.
- 22:47Speaker 2: You could sit here and take it half class, class
- 22:50Speaker 2: half full and say just need Gonzo back, right, just
- 22:54Speaker 2: get zero back, and all of this is going to
- 22:56Speaker 2: go back to the way that they envision. The other
- 22:59Speaker 2: side of it, though, is that there are guys that
- 23:02Speaker 2: they need to rely on in this secondary, with or
- 23:06Speaker 2: without Christian Gonzalez that are getting picked on, mainly the linebackers,
- 23:10Speaker 2: Alex Austin, a little bit of the safeties as well,
- 23:13Speaker 2: if those middle of the field defenders, particularly because once
- 23:17Speaker 2: Gonzo comes back, Alex Austin will go back to sort
- 23:20Speaker 2: of a rotational role and not be asked to cover
- 23:25Speaker 2: Jalen Waddle and Tyreek Hill probably, so that kind of
- 23:28Speaker 2: settles that whole thing down. But the linebackers and the
- 23:32Speaker 2: safeties and past coverage, if you're going to be a
- 23:35Speaker 2: man to man team, they're going to have the backs
- 23:37Speaker 2: and tight ends a lot in this season how do
- 23:41Speaker 2: they figure that out? Where's your concern level right now
- 23:45Speaker 2: with the pass defense because the numbers are not good.
- 23:49Speaker 3: So it's twofold. On one hand, I think getting Christian
- 23:53Speaker 3: Zalez back is certainly gonna help. I mean, they're missing
- 23:55Speaker 3: their best player. They're missing their best player.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Who happen if to be the best cover corner in
- 23:58Speaker 2: the league.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Right, You're gonna feel that. You're absolutely gonna feel that.
- 24:03Speaker 3: So I think getting him back will be a chunk
- 24:06Speaker 3: of this. But I don't know how Christian Gonzalez coming
- 24:11Speaker 3: back helps Robert Splaine play better in coverage, helps christianell
- 24:15Speaker 3: has play better in coverage. We cite the yardage right,
- 24:18Speaker 3: the raw yardage of what they're giving up, and it's
- 24:21Speaker 3: it's kind of jarring. It's a lot thirty five. I
- 24:24Speaker 3: think it's just over thirty five percent of the pass
- 24:27Speaker 3: yards they've allowed. You got me doing it now, based
- 24:29Speaker 3: on PFF has come when targeting a linebacker, and the
- 24:34Speaker 3: vast majority of that is on Roberts Splaine and Chrishnellis.
- 24:37Speaker 3: There's a little bit of Martem Appu in there, but
- 24:40Speaker 3: I'd say thirty percent of their yards against him coverage
- 24:43Speaker 3: has come against more than thirty percent has come against
- 24:46Speaker 3: just two linebackers. So what do you do in that case, Well,
- 24:50Speaker 3: when you get Gonzales back, now you have him and
- 24:52Speaker 3: Davis on the outside, so you can, you know, put
- 24:56Speaker 3: more help there and put more help towards the middle
- 24:59Speaker 3: of the field and line and tight ends. Not every
- 25:03Speaker 3: running back two is going to be Devon a Chan
- 25:06Speaker 3: who obviously has tremendous speed and is a matchup nightmare.
- 25:09Speaker 3: It's not to say you won't face other good receiving backs.
- 25:11Speaker 3: There's a bit of an exception there, But at a
- 25:13Speaker 3: certain point, Robert Splain is supposed to be a three
- 25:16Speaker 3: down linebacker. Nobody's asked him to be Fred Warner, but
- 25:19Speaker 3: he can't be this much of a liability and coverage
- 25:21Speaker 3: that he's getting hunted the way he is. Christianellis is
- 25:24Speaker 3: a covers linebacker. That's the guy they brought back the
- 25:26Speaker 3: Raiders were going to sign as an RFA and they matched.
- 25:29Speaker 3: At a certain point, you just might need those guys
- 25:32Speaker 3: to play better. And I know that's not the answer
- 25:34Speaker 3: anybody wants to hear, and that's not really what we
- 25:36Speaker 3: do on this show. We kind of talk about the
- 25:38Speaker 3: schematics of this and that as they noticed no more
- 25:40Speaker 3: uh haas behind the logo.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, well not on this logo. It's on like
- 25:44Speaker 2: the It's on like the Apple.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Because I saw Brady talking about it, so I realized that,
- 25:50Speaker 3: I know, on the show, you know, we'd normally get
- 25:51Speaker 3: more of the schematics of and again, when you get
- 25:53Speaker 3: Gonzales back, I think there'll be more opportunity to give
- 25:56Speaker 3: some help. But at a certa and point, those guys
- 26:00Speaker 3: just have to cover.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah. No, that's a good point. I do think that
- 26:04Speaker 2: they are. There are things that they could do to
- 26:08Speaker 2: help out Roberts playing. I think they're asking a lot
- 26:11Speaker 2: of Roberts playe right now. I'm glad that you pointed
- 26:15Speaker 2: that out with a Chan. I know, hen killed them,
- 26:17Speaker 2: but Han kills a lot of people. He's a really
- 26:20Speaker 2: good player, and not only is he explosive, but he's
- 26:23Speaker 2: quick and he's just a matchup nightmare for any linebacker.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So one of the things that I would just nitpick
- 26:29Speaker 2: from the coaching staff standpoint here is that you need
- 26:33Speaker 2: to start going into games treating running backs like Chan
- 26:38Speaker 2: as a game plan player. Like you can't just go
- 26:41Speaker 2: into that game like you would any other week. And
- 26:44Speaker 2: just say you know, the linebacker's got him right like that.
- 26:48Speaker 2: That's got to be more of a game plan oriented thing.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Whether you know that situation where they give up the
- 26:54Speaker 2: twenty nine yard touchdown before halftime, Like maybe that's Kyle
- 26:58Speaker 2: Duggart on a chan Maybe that's another safety. If you
- 27:02Speaker 2: don't like Kyle dugger in that spot, maybe you try
- 27:04Speaker 2: Marte Mappuo, I know, gave up the eighteen yarder. But
- 27:07Speaker 2: like is a little bit more athletic and a little
- 27:09Speaker 2: bit better in space and has the safety background. You
- 27:11Speaker 2: have to treat him as a different kind of cat,
- 27:14Speaker 2: Like that's not a just run of the mill running
- 27:19Speaker 2: back out of the backfield route. That is a dynamic
- 27:22Speaker 2: skill player in space coming out of the backfield there.
- 27:26Speaker 2: So the coaching staff needs to help out Roberts play
- 27:28Speaker 2: in a little bit. I don't want to go as
- 27:31Speaker 2: too far to say that they're leaving him out to
- 27:32Speaker 2: dry because he's got to play better. But they're asking
- 27:35Speaker 2: a lot of robert splay, especially in coverage, and I
- 27:38Speaker 2: think that they can help him out by taking him
- 27:40Speaker 2: out of some of those band coverage situations. It might
- 27:43Speaker 2: be a situation where he is a little bit more
- 27:47Speaker 2: Jawan Bentley than what we thought. Not exactly the same player,
- 27:51Speaker 2: but Jwan Bentley, if he was playing on third down
- 27:54Speaker 2: with the Patriots over the years, was in the past
- 27:57Speaker 2: rush They did not drop Jawan Bentley in coverage you often,
- 28:00Speaker 2: especially not man coverage. So you might have to start
- 28:04Speaker 2: treating Robert Splaine like a like a two down player.
- 28:08Speaker 2: So maybe a three down player going to right that
- 28:11Speaker 2: that's the big question. Now, Mapu had a little bit
- 28:14Speaker 2: of an audition that did not go so hot. You know,
- 28:16Speaker 2: he got the pick, but he also gave up the
- 28:18Speaker 2: eighteen yard completion that could have been a touchdown if
- 28:21Speaker 2: the chalk is a little bit further out wide there
- 28:24Speaker 2: what the fields fifty three.
- 28:25Speaker 3: And a half yards touchdown in Canada?
- 28:27Speaker 2: If it's a fifty four you know yard wide field,
- 28:31Speaker 2: then it's a touchdown. Uh. The other answer that I've
- 28:35Speaker 2: thought about a little bit, and I know this is
- 28:37Speaker 2: maybe a tad outside the box, but would they ever
- 28:40Speaker 2: think about playing Kyle Dugger at the second level?
- 28:42Speaker 3: But wasn't the whole thing in camp? The Kyle Dugger
- 28:45Speaker 3: was struggling and coverage, specifically.
- 28:47Speaker 2: With deep coverage, Like I'm talking like if he's covering
- 28:50Speaker 2: a running back out of the back. I would like
- 28:53Speaker 2: to think so, and you got to be he's on
- 28:55Speaker 2: the TV.
- 28:55Speaker 3: They got they gotta try something, right, So you've got
- 28:58Speaker 3: to try.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Something on third down. I do one if they play
- 29:00Speaker 2: more three safety dime, so six defensive backs, three corners,
- 29:03Speaker 2: three safeties, and then they have an ability there to
- 29:07Speaker 2: use that third safety as a matchup player in man
- 29:10Speaker 2: demand coverage, whether that's against a pass catching tight end
- 29:14Speaker 2: or a pass catching running back. And that way there
- 29:16Speaker 2: you're not leaving Splain and Ellis as the two guys
- 29:19Speaker 2: on the running backs. The other thing that I thought
- 29:22Speaker 2: from this game defensively that stood out to me was
- 29:26Speaker 2: just they tried to play a lot of zone coverage
- 29:30Speaker 2: early on. They played a ton of cover two two
- 29:32Speaker 2: high safety cover two early on in this game. And
- 29:36Speaker 2: Vrabel said it after the game. They were conceding the
- 29:39Speaker 2: whole shots to Tua, Like if Tuo was gonna throw
- 29:41Speaker 2: the ball outside the numbers on those corner routes, they
- 29:44Speaker 2: were just gonna give those to him. They were going
- 29:47Speaker 2: to concede them into To his credit, he threw three
- 29:50Speaker 2: corner hole shots and hit all three of them for explosives.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Eighteen yard touchdown to Wattle and then two twenty plus
- 29:56Speaker 2: yard plays, one to Hill and one to Wattle. So
- 29:59Speaker 2: they we're willing to give up those those areas of
- 30:02Speaker 2: the field and to a burn them. Now, the pivot
- 30:06Speaker 2: would probably be to play man coverage, right, if he's
- 30:09Speaker 2: killing you on the corner routes, well, the obvious answer
- 30:13Speaker 2: would be then to pivot de man coverage. But they
- 30:15Speaker 2: don't have the ability to pivot demand coverage right now
- 30:18Speaker 2: at a successful level. So they ended up only playing
- 30:20Speaker 2: four snaps of man coverage the entire game, and to
- 30:24Speaker 2: a torch to them on all four snaps, right, So
- 30:27Speaker 2: they were kind of caught between a rock and a
- 30:29Speaker 2: hard place coverage wise, of you know, he's taken what
- 30:33Speaker 2: we're giving him in Cover two and he's hitting those things,
- 30:36Speaker 2: so we can't just sit into high safety Cover two.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And then when we play man, we can't man because
- 30:41Speaker 2: we can't cover the receivers. And so I know there's
- 30:45Speaker 2: a lot of talk early on in this game about
- 30:47Speaker 2: the pass rush through the first three quarters, where they
- 30:50Speaker 2: only had a couple pressures through the first three quarters.
- 30:53Speaker 2: But I'm watching the game and I'm looking at the
- 30:55Speaker 2: numbers and two us getting the ball out and like
- 30:58Speaker 2: two like less than two seconds at some point in
- 31:01Speaker 2: this game, right in the second to third quarter range.
- 31:04Speaker 2: I think it was one point nine seconds per attempt,
- 31:08Speaker 2: you know, in terms of the average time that Tuo
- 31:11Speaker 2: was holding the football. I don't care. If you have
- 31:13Speaker 2: the best defensive line in football, You're not getting home
- 31:15Speaker 2: in two seconds. Like, it's just not possible. So as
- 31:18Speaker 2: the game wore on, they did have some calls up
- 31:21Speaker 2: their sleeve. To Zach Kerr and Mike Rabel's credit, they
- 31:23Speaker 2: pulled out some calls in the fourth quarter that were
- 31:26Speaker 2: a little bit different that forced two and to hold
- 31:28Speaker 2: the ball. And then all of a sudden you start
- 31:30Speaker 2: noticing Landry and you start noticing Milton Williams. So this
- 31:33Speaker 2: is a coverage problem. This isn't a pass rush problem, right.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I actually think their pass rush has been almost near
- 31:41Speaker 2: dominant when they've had opportunities to rush the quarterback over
- 31:45Speaker 2: the first two weeks. What they need to do is
- 31:48Speaker 2: cover better. And it's simple to just say Christian Gonzalez
- 31:52Speaker 2: is going to come back and he's going to fix everything,
- 31:54Speaker 2: but they're still going to have these problems in the
- 31:56Speaker 2: middle of the flame.
- 31:57Speaker 3: He'll fix some things. He'll he'll fix some things, but
- 31:59Speaker 3: it's really that linebacker coverage and covering running backs and
- 32:02Speaker 3: covering tight ends where they're still Gonzalez will help that
- 32:06Speaker 3: a little bit because you can maybe attribute more help
- 32:09Speaker 3: that way, but it's not going to fix everything.
- 32:12Speaker 2: All right, last thing I want to hit on and
- 32:13Speaker 2: then we can do three up, three down, and then
- 32:15Speaker 2: we'll all open the show there is It's very fair.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And I waited thirty minutes to say this because I
- 32:21Speaker 2: didn't want to. I didn't want to cloud everything here.
- 32:26Speaker 2: It's very fair to point out the fact that the
- 32:27Speaker 2: Miami Dolphins are in trouble right now. The Dolphins are
- 32:30Speaker 2: not good. They're not good offensively. They woke up a
- 32:34Speaker 2: little bit in this game. Defensively, they've been a train
- 32:37Speaker 2: wreck through two weeks. Daniel Jones looked just as good
- 32:40Speaker 2: against them in Week one as Drake May did.
- 32:43Speaker 3: Daniel Jones looked good last week against the Broncoswich was
- 32:45Speaker 3: one of the best defenses of football a shit.
- 32:47Speaker 2: So maybe the Indiana Jones is just turning it around.
- 32:50Speaker 2: But as much as you have to take it with
- 32:54Speaker 2: a grain of salt because of the opponent, and what's
- 32:57Speaker 2: going on with Miami and my guy, and I know
- 33:00Speaker 2: you're gonna take a victory lap when this happens. If
- 33:02Speaker 2: they get blown out by Buffalo tomorrow night on Thursday
- 33:05Speaker 2: Night football. I don't know if Mike McDaniel's gonna coach
- 33:08Speaker 2: in the Dolphins next week.
- 33:10Speaker 3: So Mike McDaniel even get on the plane, I don't
- 33:12Speaker 3: know so, and I'll be honest, is the only reason
- 33:15Speaker 3: he is a job right now because they're playing on
- 33:17Speaker 3: Thursday night could be because you just you really don't Logistically,
- 33:22Speaker 3: it's a night Mary, it sounds weird. Logistically is like
- 33:26Speaker 3: a mania buy for them.
- 33:27Speaker 2: So if it doesn't go well on Thursday night, they
- 33:29Speaker 2: have this the weekend off and try to sit on
- 33:31Speaker 2: it and figure it out. A big reason why the
- 33:34Speaker 2: Patriots won this game. I don't want to take away
- 33:36Speaker 2: anything from from the Pats, That's why I waited to
- 33:38Speaker 2: say this, but a big reason why the Patriots won
- 33:41Speaker 2: this game was because of the Dolphins. The Dolphins defense
- 33:44Speaker 2: is wretched, and not only is it wretched, but you
- 33:46Speaker 2: can take a victory lap on this. They absolutely self
- 33:51Speaker 2: destructed at the end of this game. Uh and Mike
- 33:54Speaker 2: McDaniels self destructed at the end of this game because
- 33:57Speaker 2: they had a delay a game because they couldn't get
- 34:00Speaker 2: the play call in shock. They had a bad like
- 34:03Speaker 2: substitution or something like that happened that led to another penalty.
- 34:07Speaker 2: They went from what was it, like first and ten
- 34:10Speaker 2: from the twenty six after the h HN catch to
- 34:13Speaker 2: like second and twenty five, all on their own doing.
- 34:16Speaker 2: The Patriots took advantage of it, though, And that's what
- 34:19Speaker 2: I want to harp on here to kind of, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 2: bring it back to a good thing for the Patriots.
- 34:25Speaker 2: What was Mike Rabel's first step for.
- 34:28Speaker 3: This football good enough to take advantage of bad football?
- 34:31Speaker 3: That's exactly what they did that That's exactly what that
- 34:33Speaker 3: win was. And they played some bad football themselves that
- 34:36Speaker 3: they have to clean up. But you know, I texted
- 34:38Speaker 3: a buddy mine after the game, the last two years
- 34:41Speaker 3: in that sort of game, the Patriots are who the
- 34:44Speaker 3: Dolphins were, Right, It's okay, we got a big return
- 34:48Speaker 3: and then we gave one up. We hit a big
- 34:50Speaker 3: play and then we you know, we committed these penalties
- 34:53Speaker 3: that kind of offset it. So that's not to say
- 34:56Speaker 3: they were perfect. They certainly made their share of mistakes.
- 34:59Speaker 3: I think they were called for. I know they were
- 35:01Speaker 3: had twelve accepted penalties. I think the actual number was
- 35:04Speaker 3: like fifteen or sixteen. And we talked about this last
- 35:06Speaker 3: week in the Reeler fake thing. I think the penalties
- 35:09Speaker 3: are going to be a thing, at least to start
- 35:10Speaker 3: the year. More than half of those called penalties are
- 35:12Speaker 3: against rookies, Travon Henderson and three of them. And on
- 35:16Speaker 3: top of rookies, you just got a lot of guys who,
- 35:18Speaker 3: even as veterans, are in a new system and are
- 35:19Speaker 3: going to have to figure it out. So they had
- 35:22Speaker 3: their mistakes. I'm not gonna say they didn't have their mistakes,
- 35:24Speaker 3: but at the end of the day, they didn't make
- 35:26Speaker 3: the last win. They didn't make the biggest one, and
- 35:28Speaker 3: that's not going to win you a Super Bowler. And hey,
- 35:30Speaker 3: we didn't make the worst mistake in this game. You know,
- 35:33Speaker 3: that doesn't make you a Super Bowl contender. But it's
- 35:36Speaker 3: the first step, and realistically, this thing's going to be
- 35:38Speaker 3: a process.
- 35:38Speaker 2: So it's the first step. And it's been well probably
- 35:43Speaker 2: since the last time they scored thirty points. So the
- 35:45Speaker 2: Bailey Zappy game in twenty twenty two which was a
- 35:48Speaker 2: flash in the pan, let's face it, but they scored
- 35:51Speaker 2: thirty in Cleveland that day. The Browns were also a mess,
- 35:55Speaker 2: and I took advantage of bad football in Cleveland that day.
- 35:58Speaker 2: But I think to consistently go back to when the
- 36:01Speaker 2: offense was able to take advantage of bad football, you
- 36:03Speaker 2: probably have to go back to Max rookie season. Yeah,
- 36:06Speaker 2: that's honestly how long it's been since they've had good
- 36:09Speaker 2: enough offense that when they get a matchup with a
- 36:12Speaker 2: running back on a linebacker down the field, they make
- 36:15Speaker 2: the play, or when they can pull defenders out of
- 36:19Speaker 2: their zone drops on play action, they hit the plays
- 36:22Speaker 2: down the field, like the one to Hooper or the
- 36:24Speaker 2: touchdown Hollins, like those plays they just haven't been making
- 36:27Speaker 2: over the last two or three years. They were able
- 36:29Speaker 2: to take advantage of bad football. And I know that
- 36:32Speaker 2: some people get bothered when you look ahead, but we
- 36:34Speaker 2: don't play the game, so we can look ahead. It's fine,
- 36:36Speaker 2: trust me. Like they're not looking ahead, but we can't
- 36:39Speaker 2: their schedule. If you just go into some of these
- 36:43Speaker 2: games against the Miamis, the Carolinas, the New Orleans, the Clevelands,
- 36:49Speaker 2: the Tennessee's if you go into some of these games
- 36:52Speaker 2: and you just don't stink as bad as the other team,
- 36:57Speaker 2: that you're gonna see some wins start to pile up
- 36:59Speaker 2: for the team like that, that is set up for them.
- 37:03Speaker 3: It's taking advantage of bad football to.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Just be to let the other team out suck you.
- 37:09Speaker 2: That's it. Yeah, And they can go into five, six,
- 37:12Speaker 2: seven of these games, I would say, and we might
- 37:15Speaker 2: be able. We'll see what happens with the Bengals without
- 37:17Speaker 2: Joe Burrow. That's another game now in November. The Patriots
- 37:20Speaker 2: probably aren't going to have to face Joe Burrow when
- 37:23Speaker 2: they play the Bengals. It's Cleveland, it's Tennessee, it's New Orleans,
- 37:28Speaker 2: it's Carolina. Who the heck knows what's gonna happen with
- 37:32Speaker 2: the Jets between now and the time the Patriots play
- 37:35Speaker 2: them the Giants. Is that going to be Jackson Dart
- 37:38Speaker 2: in that game? Is that going to be Russell Wilson played?
- 37:40Speaker 3: He played okay this week.
- 37:41Speaker 2: But there's probably seven or eight games on their schedule
- 37:45Speaker 2: that if at the bare minimum, they take that first
- 37:47Speaker 2: step this year with my with Mike Rable of taking
- 37:50Speaker 2: advantage of bad football where they could go realistically five
- 37:54Speaker 2: and two, six and one in that stretch of games,
- 37:57Speaker 2: and that's a great first step for this team. So
- 38:00Speaker 2: there you go. I waxed poetic. I gave him their flowers. Nice,
- 38:04Speaker 2: good game, thank you. Three up, three down, and then
- 38:07Speaker 2: we're gonna move on. We're and talk some Steelers and
- 38:09Speaker 2: take your calls and emails. Number one up? Is it both,
- 38:12Speaker 2: Drake May? For both of us here the number one up?
- 38:15Speaker 2: Drake May. I had him, like I said, eleven plus
- 38:19Speaker 2: two minus, his best game as a pro, no doubt
- 38:23Speaker 2: about it. Is there anything else you want to add?
- 38:25Speaker 3: I think we said all he was really good? Number
- 38:27Speaker 3: two ramondra Sevenson got the same list. Kyan already talked
- 38:30Speaker 3: about it. His ability to make plays, is a runner
- 38:34Speaker 3: and is a passer, and his ability to create hidden
- 38:36Speaker 3: yardage and break tackles and things like that. Chelsea, what
- 38:39Speaker 3: he can be when he's right. Now, don't run him
- 38:41Speaker 3: into the ground like you have the last few years,
- 38:43Speaker 3: because we see he can't beat his player all year
- 38:46Speaker 3: when he's getting three hundred touches. He got to keep
- 38:47Speaker 3: Travon Henderson involved. We'll get to Travon Henderson. But when
- 38:51Speaker 3: he's right he can be a weapon for the offense.
- 38:54Speaker 2: So Remandre, of course, I just lost my dock here
- 38:58Speaker 2: Andre one yard run, fifty five yard catch, and then
- 39:03Speaker 2: he had that fourteen yard screen on a third down
- 39:06Speaker 2: backed up. That was a sneaky big play in this game.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Made a guy miss I had no business getting the
- 39:12Speaker 2: sticks in that play, and he did a really sneaky game.
- 39:16Speaker 2: I don't know if they just called the screens at
- 39:20Speaker 2: the right time or if Drake was checking into the screens,
- 39:25Speaker 2: but they caught Miami in two blitzes on screens. One
- 39:29Speaker 2: was a fifteen yard reception by Travon Henderson and one
- 39:32Speaker 2: was a fourteen yard third down and twelve where Remandre
- 39:35Speaker 2: gained fourteen yards where they brought the house to that
- 39:38Speaker 2: side of the field. They overloaded the side of the
- 39:40Speaker 2: field and the Patriots just snuck Remindre right behind the
- 39:44Speaker 2: blitz on a screen. So whether it was a well
- 39:47Speaker 2: time call by Josh McDaniels or a great check by
- 39:50Speaker 2: Drake may either way like that, that's really good offense
- 39:54Speaker 2: and good news for them. So I also had Remandre
- 39:57Speaker 2: in this game. I thought he was fantastic. Who's number three?
- 40:01Speaker 3: Number three? So actually had four ups Number three Josh mctangils.
- 40:05Speaker 3: I just like the way everything you said off the top.
- 40:07Speaker 3: I like the way that they adjusted. I like the
- 40:09Speaker 3: changes they made from week to week. I think those
- 40:11Speaker 3: really helped. He deserves credit for this game certainly.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, Number three on my list. The rookies on
- 40:18Speaker 2: the left side of the offensive line. Yeah, they're both
- 40:20Speaker 2: Will Campbell Jared Wilson. Both pitch shutouts. Now, like I
- 40:24Speaker 2: said earlier, they really only had like seventeen or so
- 40:28Speaker 2: true drop back past sets, so it wasn't a ton
- 40:32Speaker 2: of volume. I would also put out there, Bradley Chubb
- 40:37Speaker 2: right now is just not the same guy coming off
- 40:39Speaker 2: this knee injury. He's compromised. But at the same time,
- 40:43Speaker 2: I thought Will Campbell was terrific in this game. He
- 40:46Speaker 2: was in complete control of that matchup in pass pro.
- 40:49Speaker 2: He had three really dominant standout run blocks in this game.
- 40:54Speaker 2: One of them came on the fifteen yarder to Gibson
- 40:56Speaker 2: on the wham scheme where he got up to the
- 40:58Speaker 2: second level and turned the guy out. He was terrific
- 41:02Speaker 2: throughout this entire game and just kind of dominated Bradley Chubb.
- 41:05Speaker 2: He Bradley Chubb did not do anything of note. Jared
- 41:09Speaker 2: Wilson also really good. Saw a little bit of Zach
- 41:12Speaker 2: Seeler in this game. Was an underrated player on the
- 41:14Speaker 2: interior there for the Dolphins and was able to hold
- 41:17Speaker 2: up really well. Had a really good block on the
- 41:19Speaker 2: two point conversion, brought Remandra into the end zone on
- 41:23Speaker 2: that play. But like I said in the beginning of
- 41:26Speaker 2: the show, I'm not going to take any victory laps
- 41:29Speaker 2: yet on Will Campbell. I'm not declaring it a win
- 41:31Speaker 2: just yet. But kid looks like he can play. There
- 41:35Speaker 2: are gonna be some ups and downs, there's gonna be
- 41:37Speaker 2: some bumps in the road. But I think what we're
- 41:40Speaker 2: seeing through two weeks is that I don't think the
- 41:46Speaker 2: arm length thing and the physical limitations is gonna be
- 41:48Speaker 2: why this kid fails. I really don't. I think he's
- 41:50Speaker 2: plenty good enough to overcome that is gonna be perfect,
- 41:54Speaker 2: Absolutely not. But I think through two weeks and through
- 41:57Speaker 2: training camp, I can confidently say that there is that's
- 42:01Speaker 2: not going to be why if it goes south for him,
- 42:04Speaker 2: It's not going to be the arm.
- 42:04Speaker 3: It was funny I said on the radio last night,
- 42:06Speaker 3: if everybody would have just gotten past the arms for
- 42:09Speaker 3: five minutes in the spring, I would have told you,
- 42:13Speaker 3: and I think I mentioned it very briefly on this show.
- 42:15Speaker 3: I don't know how many shows we even got through it.
- 42:17Speaker 3: My biggest concern with Will Campbell was not the arm length.
- 42:20Speaker 3: It was that he developed a little bit of a
- 42:22Speaker 3: penalty problem last year at LS. He was very good
- 42:25Speaker 3: the first two years and then last year. I think
- 42:27Speaker 3: he had seven penalty He had more last year, and
- 42:29Speaker 3: he did the first years combined, so the penalty self
- 42:31Speaker 3: to come down. He had another fall start in this game.
- 42:33Speaker 3: I know Vrabel said he didn't see him move. There
- 42:35Speaker 3: might be a little bit of a flinch there, but
- 42:37Speaker 3: I thought it. I thought so too. But I mean
- 42:41Speaker 3: he's in his second game in the NFL. Like the
- 42:43Speaker 3: penalties are something. First game on the road, that's first
- 42:46Speaker 3: game on the road. That's very coachable, and first game
- 42:50Speaker 3: on the road. It's interesting. Andrew's mentioned he noticed they
- 42:52Speaker 3: were going back and forth between a verbal count and
- 42:54Speaker 3: a head bob count. So it was a tough in
- 42:57Speaker 3: that regard. But if the penalties come down, I mean
- 43:00Speaker 3: he's that as a blocker. This is he's a starting
- 43:03Speaker 3: caliber left tackle. He's a solid, starting caliber left tackle
- 43:06Speaker 3: right now through two games. Like you said earlier, I'm
- 43:09Speaker 3: not gonna take the whole victory lap on that, But
- 43:12Speaker 3: if this is an indication of who he's gonna be,
- 43:14Speaker 3: I think you feel pretty good about that. As long
- 43:17Speaker 3: as as he kind of trims down the penalties, that's
- 43:19Speaker 3: the one thing you're looking at. This is exactly what
- 43:21Speaker 3: they by the way we talked about him, you know,
- 43:23Speaker 3: really winning against Bradley Chubb. He's finishing against Bradley Chubb.
- 43:28Speaker 3: I mean he put him on the ground a few times.
- 43:29Speaker 2: He got his hands on him and just ended the reps. Now,
- 43:32Speaker 2: Bradley Chubb is not who he once was. I think
- 43:35Speaker 2: that has to be said. I'm really interested this week,
- 43:38Speaker 2: so I don't think not to get too much into
- 43:41Speaker 2: the Steelers right away. But I don't think Alex Heismith
- 43:44Speaker 2: is going to play in this game. He had a
- 43:45Speaker 2: high ankles game last week.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Tom said he's not.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think he's gonna be out. Nick Herbig
- 43:52Speaker 2: the back their third pass rusher there, Watt. You know
- 43:56Speaker 2: high Smith. Herbig is sneaky good. He's a really good
- 44:00Speaker 2: speed rusher and he's kind of the type of guy
- 44:03Speaker 2: that I was a little bit concerned about with Will Campbell.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Where if you get those guys that can really threaten
- 44:08Speaker 2: the corner off the snap, and Will Campbell over commits,
- 44:11Speaker 2: that's when he gets beat to the inside. That's when
- 44:13Speaker 2: that inside move was getting him in college. So I'm
- 44:16Speaker 2: interested to see how he looks. He's gonna face better guys,
- 44:19Speaker 2: And I think what's what's been really nice for the
- 44:21Speaker 2: Patriots here is all the good rushers have been rushing
- 44:25Speaker 2: over the right tackle for the first two weeks and
- 44:27Speaker 2: will next week two with TJ. Watt. So Max Crosby
- 44:30Speaker 2: is a right tackle guy, Jaln Phillips is a right
- 44:33Speaker 2: tackle guy, and now t J. Watt is a right
- 44:37Speaker 2: tackle guy. So they haven't really had like the baptism
- 44:40Speaker 2: of by fire yet for Will Campbell, which I think
- 44:43Speaker 2: is a good thing in some ways to kind of
- 44:46Speaker 2: give him some confidence and get him into the league
- 44:48Speaker 2: a little bit before we get to that point. You
- 44:50Speaker 2: had four, I had four as well. Who was your fourth,
- 44:53Speaker 2: Milton Williams?
- 44:54Speaker 3: I know, all right, No, you had the line and
- 44:57Speaker 3: I Josh McDaniel, Oh right, right, right, Let's could have
- 44:59Speaker 3: had the lineane though they were good as much as
- 45:02Speaker 3: the defense struggled. The sack at the end of the
- 45:04Speaker 3: game is great. He I don't know do you call
- 45:07Speaker 3: that beating a double team? He almost got around so
- 45:09Speaker 3: quickly before the second guy could even get there, you know,
- 45:12Speaker 3: like it never it was supposed to be a double team,
- 45:14Speaker 3: but it wasn't because he got off the ball so
- 45:16Speaker 3: quick that the center Aaron Brewer couldn't get over after
- 45:18Speaker 3: he snapped the ball. How about his other sack though?
- 45:21Speaker 3: Where and it was on a third down late in
- 45:23Speaker 3: the game, third and short, and he chases. It's not
- 45:26Speaker 3: a real sack in the sense that he tackles the quarterback.
- 45:29Speaker 3: He chases Tua all the way to the sideline, forced
- 45:32Speaker 3: him out of bounds, doesn't even give him a chance
- 45:34Speaker 3: to throw the ball away. Two has to run out
- 45:35Speaker 3: of bounds for a loss, which is very rare see quarterbacks.
- 45:38Speaker 3: Do I know Drake may did it last week? It's
- 45:41Speaker 3: not something you want to be doing as a quarterback.
- 45:43Speaker 3: For defensive tackle, too is athletic. Two is not a statue.
- 45:46Speaker 3: He's not Lamar Jackson, but he's not a statue for
- 45:49Speaker 3: defensive tackle. To chase the quarterback all the way to
- 45:52Speaker 3: the sideline in a game in Miami, like late in
- 45:56Speaker 3: that game when he's that's just terrific motor, terrific athletics,
- 45:59Speaker 3: is terrific, conditioning the guys showing up, the guys shown up.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Is a big time player. Through two weeks, he's been awesome.
- 46:05Speaker 2: He's been a man possessed. He's been absolutely unreal through
- 46:09Speaker 2: two weeks. There's two things that you worry about with
- 46:12Speaker 2: guys like Milton Williams. One of course, it was is
- 46:15Speaker 2: he a product of the Philly defensive line? Is he
- 46:18Speaker 2: the Adlias Thomas of the Eagles defense where he's got
- 46:22Speaker 2: Jalen Carter, he's got Jordan Davis, he's got the guys
- 46:25Speaker 2: on the outside, And there were concerns when they signed him.
- 46:28Speaker 2: I admit I was concerned about it a little bit,
- 46:31Speaker 2: that he was just kind of a product of that
- 46:33Speaker 2: system and that defensive line. The other thing that you
- 46:36Speaker 2: worry about guys like million Milton Williams is when you
- 46:38Speaker 2: sign for a hundred million dollars, like is it gonna
- 46:41Speaker 2: mean as much to you after the contract? Or are
- 46:43Speaker 2: you still gonna play with that kind of effort and
- 46:46Speaker 2: that kind of motor both check and check like so
- 46:50Speaker 2: far right, like hurting the check. I mean, he just
- 46:52Speaker 2: he's playing with his hair on fire. The one thing
- 46:54Speaker 2: I texted you about on Monday is like, can he
- 46:57Speaker 2: keep this up? Can he play at this type a
- 47:00Speaker 2: level in terms of effort for seventeen games, Because this
- 47:05Speaker 2: is a crazy start for Milton Williams. He has ten
- 47:08Speaker 2: pressures through two weeks. He's second in the league in
- 47:11Speaker 2: a pass rush win rate among defensive tackles. They's yeah,
- 47:16Speaker 2: he's been one of the best defensive tackles in football
- 47:18Speaker 2: through two weeks. And I would say that the game
- 47:21Speaker 2: ceiling sack, they slide the three man protection towards him
- 47:25Speaker 2: in Harold Landry and then they are man to man
- 47:28Speaker 2: to the back side, so it's you know, man to
- 47:30Speaker 2: man one on one on the back side, and they
- 47:32Speaker 2: actually chip on the left side to kind of help
- 47:34Speaker 2: out the tackle there, and then they three man slide
- 47:36Speaker 2: it to two people on the other side. If you're
- 47:39Speaker 2: three man sliding to two people, you're supposed to be
- 47:42Speaker 2: able to block it.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Right.
- 47:42Speaker 2: You have three on two for the offensive line, and
- 47:45Speaker 2: Milton Williams was just off the ball so quickly and
- 47:48Speaker 2: through the double team so fast that they couldn't even
- 47:51Speaker 2: block them even with two guys on one player. So
- 47:54Speaker 2: just took over, just an absolute game takeover by Milton Williams.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I hope you can do it for seventeen games. I
- 48:01Speaker 2: hope we don't see this the gas tanks start to
- 48:03Speaker 2: run empty, right, you know, compared it to kind of
- 48:06Speaker 2: like Judon. Remember Judon will kind of tail off towards
- 48:09Speaker 2: the end of the season. I will get to the
- 48:11Speaker 2: downs here in a second. But nothing says football season

- 49:01Speaker 2: with the Patriots. Tostitos tradition matters. Let's move to the downs.
- 49:06Speaker 2: We've been pretty positive for the first fifty minutes, but
- 49:08Speaker 2: there's certainly some downs. Who's your number one down? Here?
- 49:12Speaker 3: Number one down? I don't do him in order. I
- 49:14Speaker 3: just do him the order they come to my head.
- 49:15Speaker 3: All right, I'll try to stort it. Robertsplaine, Yeah, Roberts
- 49:18Speaker 3: and a lot of what we talked about. The mistackle,
- 49:20Speaker 3: the misstackles is the bigger thing, like if they need
- 49:23Speaker 3: to maybe turn somewhere else in coverage. It's not ideal,
- 49:25Speaker 3: but I get it. Guy's supposed to be a tackling machine.
- 49:28Speaker 3: I think he's missed more tackle. Has he missed more
- 49:32Speaker 3: tackles than he made he's made or something like that,
- 49:33Speaker 3: Like got to be finishing the tackles. So you have
- 49:37Speaker 3: me using the stats. His eight dot is four yards
- 49:40Speaker 3: per target average up the target, he's allowing eleven yards
- 49:43Speaker 3: per completion or eleven yards per tempt. So even if
- 49:46Speaker 3: he is going to allow these completions, like you got
- 49:48Speaker 3: to get the guy down at the spot. And if
- 49:50Speaker 3: there's not as much of a yak opportunity, okay, then
- 49:53Speaker 3: maybe teams don't target you as much. The tackling, to me,
- 49:55Speaker 3: is a bigger issue than the coverage with him.
- 49:57Speaker 2: So five miss tackles for Roberts Splain, it was all
- 50:00Speaker 2: my number one down eight catches ninety six yards in
- 50:04Speaker 2: a touchdown into his coverage. Of course, the touchdown was
- 50:06Speaker 2: the twenty nine to nine yarder by eight Hn right
- 50:09Speaker 2: before halftime. The one thing I'll say for Robert Splaine
- 50:14Speaker 2: that gives me a slight glimmer of hope is that
- 50:18Speaker 2: he's there. He's just not getting the guys on the ground.
- 50:22Speaker 2: So he's been a good tackler throughout his career. He's
- 50:25Speaker 2: already missed I believe, as many tackles in two games
- 50:29Speaker 2: as he missed all of last year. So for whatever reason,
- 50:33Speaker 2: he's not tackling well right now. If he gets at
- 50:36Speaker 2: an order, I think the good news is that it's
- 50:38Speaker 2: not that he's not getting to the spots. He's just
- 50:40Speaker 2: not getting the ballgarer on the ground. So if you
- 50:43Speaker 2: start to tackle a little bit better, maybe this goes
- 50:45Speaker 2: the other way and starts to improve quickly here for
- 50:48Speaker 2: Robert Splaine, but he just hasn't been good enough. They
- 50:50Speaker 2: don't need him to be. He doesn't have to be
- 50:52Speaker 2: like prime ray lewis right, but they just need him
- 50:54Speaker 2: to be better than this. So Robert Splaine, the number
- 50:57Speaker 2: one down, who's number two on your.
- 50:58Speaker 3: List, and Henderson three holding penalties to on offense, one
- 51:03Speaker 3: on special teams, got blown up a couple times in
- 51:05Speaker 3: pass protection. That's it's gonna make it hard to put you.
- 51:07Speaker 3: You gotta be able to pass block if you're gonna
- 51:09Speaker 3: be out there in the situations they want him in.
- 51:11Speaker 3: And it's not as simple as why don't you just
- 51:12Speaker 3: run him in the route every time. There's gonna be
- 51:14Speaker 3: times he need to check and keep the extra protector
- 51:16Speaker 3: in and he's gonna have to be able to hold
- 51:17Speaker 3: up in that regard. So a down week for him,
- 51:21Speaker 3: you hope it improves. You hope it doesn't cut in
- 51:23Speaker 3: was playing time too much, But the pass protection issues
- 51:27Speaker 3: were real for him in this game.
- 51:28Speaker 2: So I'll get to him in a second. My number
- 51:30Speaker 2: two down was Alex Austin, who I'm just kind of
- 51:33Speaker 2: disappointed in what the performance because for the first two weeks.
- 51:37Speaker 2: I thought he had a really good training camp. I
- 51:39Speaker 2: thought he had a really good summer. I thought he
- 51:41Speaker 2: was good in the joint practices against other teams. And
- 51:44Speaker 2: he just hasn't been good to start the season. You know,
- 51:47Speaker 2: gave up six catches for ninety eight yards and a touchdown.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Of course, the Waddle touchdown with him in coverage, I
- 51:53Speaker 2: just I was expecting a little bit better from Alex Austin.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Now is he punching above his weight like a little bit.
- 52:00Speaker 2: He's probably not there yet to cover the number one
- 52:04Speaker 2: receiver on the other team, whether that's Waddle or Hill,
- 52:06Speaker 2: whichever one you want to pick. He's just not there yet.
- 52:10Speaker 2: But even the big catch he gave up to Hill,
- 52:13Speaker 2: the forty seven yarder, he's just got to play the
- 52:15Speaker 2: ball better in the air, Like he's got the deep third. Yeah,
- 52:19Speaker 2: you can't get beat over the top first of all,
- 52:21Speaker 2: and cover three when you have the deep third. He
- 52:23Speaker 2: gets run by by Tyreek Hill and then it's really
- 52:26Speaker 2: under thrown, but he's so far behind that he's playing
- 52:29Speaker 2: catch up and so that he can't recover the underthrown pass.
- 52:32Speaker 2: I just wasn't a good game for Alex Austin. And
- 52:35Speaker 2: if Christigan zalz We're gonna find out here in a
- 52:38Speaker 2: couple of hours, if he's gonna be on the practice
- 52:40Speaker 2: field today on Wednesday, if Christian Zalez continues to be
- 52:43Speaker 2: out like, they need Alex Austen to be better than
- 52:45Speaker 2: what he was on Sunday. So Alex Austen was number
- 52:48Speaker 2: two for me, he's number three for you.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Part of me with Alex Austin though, just real quick like, yes,
- 52:52Speaker 3: he's a better player, and he looked in that game.
- 52:54Speaker 3: That's a bad matchup for him. He's not a speed corner.
- 52:56Speaker 3: He's a guy you're putting up against a big you know,
- 52:58Speaker 3: physical jump balls. Even the Dolphins don't have that guy.
- 53:01Speaker 3: So that's when where Gonzalez is back. I don't think
- 53:05Speaker 3: you see Alex Austen in a lot of the positions
- 53:07Speaker 3: that he was in. Now, I'm not saying you're wrong
- 53:09Speaker 3: to put him on the downs that game. I was
- 53:11Speaker 3: nervous about him going into that game. That's a tough
- 53:13Speaker 3: matchup spot for him against those Dolphins concept.
- 53:16Speaker 2: And just to further that point too, this is what
- 53:20Speaker 2: such a massive part of the trickle down effect of
- 53:23Speaker 2: Christian Gonzales, right, because so if Christian Goanzalez is healthy
- 53:26Speaker 2: for this game, then maybe you can use Alex Austen
- 53:29Speaker 2: in more of a nickel role. Yeah, and now maybe
- 53:31Speaker 2: he has a chin coming.
- 53:33Speaker 3: Out right, because you're gonna have it Gonzales and probably, honestly,
- 53:36Speaker 3: Marcus Jones on the two top receivers. Marcus Jones was
- 53:39Speaker 3: solid in this game. But the problem was whoever Marcus
- 53:42Speaker 3: Jones was covering, whether it was Wadle or Hill. They
- 53:45Speaker 3: were just going to the other guy and picking on
- 53:47Speaker 3: Alex Austin. Whereas if you have Marcus Jones and Christian Gonzalez,
- 53:50Speaker 3: you're two speed corners on their two speed receivers. It's
- 53:53Speaker 3: a lot easier. So obviously they didn't have them. You know,
- 53:55Speaker 3: that's revision his history, but I think that that makes
- 53:58Speaker 3: a change.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Who's number three?
- 54:00Speaker 3: Number three for me, just outside of Antonio Gibson. The
- 54:03Speaker 3: special teams you have.
- 54:06Speaker 2: I'm smiling because I actually had special teams for once.
- 54:09Speaker 2: But so I.
- 54:11Speaker 3: Feel wrong putting special teams with a kickoff return touchdown
- 54:16Speaker 3: and I could have maybe nitpicked and done five guys
- 54:19Speaker 3: and done like Andy Borgollis and Schooler missed a tackle
- 54:22Speaker 3: and Charles Woods missed a tackle and you know what,
- 54:26Speaker 3: I think it's easier. Just Antonio Gibson and Mac Hollans
- 54:30Speaker 3: said a really good block on that kick return touchdown,
- 54:32Speaker 3: So take them out of those. But Andy Borgollis misses
- 54:36Speaker 3: two extra points. Credit to him. He comes back, he
- 54:39Speaker 3: hits the fifty three yarder, absolute stones from the kid
- 54:42Speaker 3: to do that, but then he puts the ensuing kickoff
- 54:45Speaker 3: short of the landing zone, gives the Dolphins a short field, Like,
- 54:47Speaker 3: that's not good. Bryce Baringer was really good. He had
- 54:51Speaker 3: two seventy yard punts, but did he OutKick his coverage.
- 54:53Speaker 3: I'll be interesting to hear, interested to hear if Jeremy
- 54:55Speaker 3: Springer has anything to say about that, because one of
- 54:57Speaker 3: them is a twenty yard return, which on a seventy
- 55:00Speaker 3: yard punt, you'll still take that. But I almost feel
- 55:03Speaker 3: like they used that return when Baringer hits another insane
- 55:06Speaker 3: punt to come back the next rep and then they
- 55:09Speaker 3: have the touchdown. And though Charles Woods had him wrapped
- 55:12Speaker 3: up at one point, and brettan Schooler is not a
- 55:15Speaker 3: guy that should be missing tackles, just giving his standing,
- 55:17Speaker 3: so it was even with the kick return touchdown overall,
- 55:21Speaker 3: and he had numbers of penalties on special teams. Overall
- 55:25Speaker 3: a down game for special teams, even with the kick
- 55:28Speaker 3: return touchdown.
- 55:29Speaker 2: So you know, I usually leave the special teams for you.
- 55:33Speaker 2: So I considered Morgan Moses, but he's playing on a
- 55:35Speaker 2: bad tire, so I let that one.
- 55:37Speaker 3: I mean, three fall starts is rough.
- 55:39Speaker 2: I considered Morgan Moses. It wasn't great, but he's hurt,
- 55:43Speaker 2: he's playing through injury. Yeah. I considered Trevion Henderson for
- 55:47Speaker 2: the same reasons that you laid out. But he had
- 55:49Speaker 2: the wheel route that was a nice play, had the screen.
- 55:52Speaker 2: It was a rookie in his second NFL game, first
- 55:55Speaker 2: road game in the NFL. I just think I'm morehead
- 55:59Speaker 2: him on it because I agree with your analogis just
- 56:02Speaker 2: let me just add this.
- 56:03Speaker 3: We know in the past, and look, this was a
- 56:06Speaker 3: few years ago and under a different head coach under Bilt.
- 56:08Speaker 3: But we've seen how finicky Josh can be with rookie
- 56:13Speaker 3: running backs, and you don't necessarily get a lot of chances,
- 56:16Speaker 3: and we've seen guys screw up and you don't they
- 56:19Speaker 3: you know, they essentially go missing for a few weeks.
- 56:21Speaker 3: And now I don't know that the Patriots have the
- 56:23Speaker 3: luxury to do that. I don't know if they have
- 56:24Speaker 3: the depth or the speed on offense this depth are
- 56:26Speaker 3: running back or speed on offense to do that. So
- 56:28Speaker 3: maybe that won't be the case for Henderson. But if
- 56:31Speaker 3: we're just gonna use historical context, you're a rookie running back,
- 56:34Speaker 3: you have a game like that under Josh McDaniels, we
- 56:37Speaker 3: might not see you for a month. I don't think
- 56:39Speaker 3: that's gonna be what happens with Henderson, but it's a
- 56:41Speaker 3: fair point. You have the thought.
- 56:43Speaker 2: I would think with Henderson what we might see and
- 56:45Speaker 2: this would probably drive fans just as nuts is like
- 56:48Speaker 2: a package of plays, because his speed is so important
- 56:51Speaker 2: to the offense as a whole, that he might just
- 56:53Speaker 2: have a package of kind of game plans, scheme dump
- 56:56Speaker 2: plays that he's involved in instead of just kind of
- 56:59Speaker 2: throwing him out in the base offense. I considered Christian Ellis,
- 57:03Speaker 2: who I thought was just as bad as Robert Spulaine
- 57:06Speaker 2: in this game.
- 57:06Speaker 3: Yah. Probably I probably should have just said linebackers.
- 57:08Speaker 2: He almost frame, but I thought Robert Spolaine is just
- 57:11Speaker 2: such an important piece for them that I wanted to
- 57:13Speaker 2: talk about him. And I also considered Craig Woodson, who
- 57:17Speaker 2: I thought just struggled in this game in deep coverage.
- 57:21Speaker 2: But with Woodson, same kind of things Henderson's second career.
- 57:25Speaker 3: He didn't want to put the rookies on the downs.
- 57:27Speaker 2: I didn't want to put the rookies on the downs.
- 57:28Speaker 2: And it was also the first time that he was
- 57:32Speaker 2: going up as things are falling in the studio. It
- 57:35Speaker 2: was the first time that he was going up against
- 57:37Speaker 2: Tyre Hill and Joe and Waddle, and like, those are
- 57:39Speaker 2: the two of the best deep threats that you're going
- 57:41Speaker 2: to face all season long. So I actually think this
- 57:43Speaker 2: will be a good learning experience for Craig Woodson of
- 57:46Speaker 2: how to handle that kind of speed in an NFL game.
- 57:50Speaker 2: So I considered all those people from my third down,
- 57:55Speaker 2: but I settled on special teams. Yeah, because this is
- 57:58Speaker 2: going to annoy the crap out of me. If there
- 58:01Speaker 2: are special teams? Is this bad? All season long? Four
- 58:05Speaker 2: penalties on special teams? Brealis had, the two missed extra
- 58:08Speaker 2: points and the seventy four yard punt return. Guys, it
- 58:12Speaker 2: just can't happen, Like this team can't afford those types
- 58:15Speaker 2: of things, and they put too much into special teams
- 58:19Speaker 2: in terms of the roster. In terms of the coaching staff,
- 58:22Speaker 2: they have too many cooks in that kitchen to be
- 58:26Speaker 2: giving up backbreaking seventy four yard punt returns. It just
- 58:30Speaker 2: can't happen. And I'm not trying to single out just
- 58:33Speaker 2: Brandon Schooler, but you have an all pro on special
- 58:37Speaker 2: teams covering the punt. You have Jeremy Springer, who I
- 58:39Speaker 2: think is a good coach, and you also have Tom
- 58:42Speaker 2: Quinn who's a really good special teams coach as well.
- 58:44Speaker 2: They just have too much invested in that phase of
- 58:47Speaker 2: the game. It has to be a strength of the team. Yeah,
- 58:50Speaker 2: and they can't give up plays like that. You can't
- 58:53Speaker 2: give up seventy four yard touchdowns. So through two weeks
- 58:58Speaker 2: they are twenty eighth in the league in PFF grade
- 59:01Speaker 2: on special teams, and they are twenty ninth in the
- 59:03Speaker 2: league in DVOA on special teams. They are bottom five
- 59:06Speaker 2: special teams in the NFL. Now, kicking has a big
- 59:08Speaker 2: part of that. You know, when your field goal kicker
- 59:11Speaker 2: is missing kicks, that's going to knock you down. But
- 59:14Speaker 2: there They're coverage unit also hasn't been good enough. So
- 59:18Speaker 2: the special teams needs to be better. We're gonna take
- 59:21Speaker 2: a quick break and then we're going to talk some Steelers.

- 1:02:16Speaker 9: Guys?
- 1:02:17Speaker 8: Hey, So I just wanted to get your thoughts on
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: a couple of things. The first thing, Drake May was
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: absolutely phenomenal. I thought on Sunday this was the first game.
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: Not only did I call him the postgame show and
- 1:02:30Speaker 8: say I thought he played his best NFL game, This
- 1:02:34Speaker 8: was the first time I think we might have seen
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: since twenty twenty the opener when Cam Cam was our
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: quarterback his first year against the Dolphins where the quarterback
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: actually put the team on his back and carried him
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: to a victory at least through the first three quarters
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: until that big kickoff return. Wanted to get your thoughts
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: on that, and I wrote in yesterday. I know it
- 1:02:56Speaker 8: was late because they didn't get to it on PU
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: but are either of you concerned about it? Seems like
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: three out of their four false starts on offense on
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: Sunday were caused by shifting and how did they wreck?
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: How does Rabel like get that out of their system?
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: And I'll take it out there, guys.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Patti, thanks for the call. It's a good point.
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: So the.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: Dolphins defensive line was shifting right before the snap to
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: try to throw off the Patriots, and they did get
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Morgan Moses especially a couple of times to jump just
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: by shifting the offensive line. And then there was another
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: procedural penalty that they had where they had two guys
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: going in motion at once. I think it was Hollins
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: and Henry were both in motion and they got called
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: for that as well. So a lot of those things
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: are obviously just locking in and focusing and not jumping,
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: but some of it also too, is cadence, and honestly,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: like the one maybe nitpick with Drake in this game
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: is that some of that stuff is on Drake May.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Like it's his job to make sure that everybody is
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: settled in and as you know, on their p's and
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: q's and has a snap count ready, and the cadence
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: that he comes to line with and sort of the
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: flow that he that he you know, hikes the ball at.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: I know it sounds like a little bit elementary or
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: just like kind of crazy, but it's honestly a huge
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: part of how they start every single play is his cadence.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: So I do think that that's something that they need
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: to improve on. What did he said something about.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Special Drake Drake May taking the game over, which we
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: kind of talked about at the beginning, Like, yeah, he's
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: he put them on his back. He led them in
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: that game. He truly led them and elevated in that game.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: All Right, Will is in Cranston. What's up?
- 1:04:40Speaker 10: Will?
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:04:42Speaker 11: Guys?
- 1:04:42Speaker 12: How you doing today? A couple of things I want
- 1:04:47Speaker 12: to touch on today. I'm actually really excited to test
- 1:04:50Speaker 12: on defense this week against Pittsburgh's offense. I think that
- 1:04:54Speaker 12: Marcus Jones will match up well against Calvin Austin and
- 1:04:57Speaker 12: I think that Carlton Davis will match up well against
- 1:05:01Speaker 12: So pretty excited to watch those.
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:05:03Speaker 12: Just the other question that I had for you guys
- 1:05:05Speaker 12: was I think Travion Henderson will be a better matchup
- 1:05:08Speaker 12: this week than he was last week. Also, how do
- 1:05:11Speaker 12: you think we can stop the pressure from Pittsburgh? Considering
- 1:05:16Speaker 12: aw with TJ Watt and everybody I know, they are
- 1:05:20Speaker 12: a very blitz happy defense. So I would just like
- 1:05:22Speaker 12: to see what you guys thought with our new offensive line.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Thanks will, thanks for the call, and that
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: that pretty much hits all of the notes I would
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: say about the Steelers matchup. Yeah, So I think the
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: one thing I would say with just with the Steelers
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: that I was going to get to you once we
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: kind of started to look at them a little bit
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: closer here in the second hour, is I'm caustiously optimistic
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: about this game because they have a ton of familiarity
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: with the Steelers coaching staff. Arthur Smith was Mike Brables
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: offensive coordinator in Tennessee and whether it was the Brady years,
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: I remember that Thursday night Bailey Zappi game in Pittsburgh.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Mac Joeans was throwing dimes to Nelson, Agalore and Pittsburgh
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two. With Matt Patricia calling plays. They've
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: always seemed to have a good feel for the Steelers
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: defense and for Mike Tomlin's system, and now Josh McDaniels
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: is back to kind of hit the notes that they
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: always used to hit over the years and against that
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Steelers defense. So the familiarity with the coaching staff is
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: something that I think was a big factor in Week one.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: And I know Patrick Graham was mcdaniels's decoordinator and he
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: probably should have had some familiarity, but Pete Carroll's influence
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: on the Raiders defense was pretty substantial, And I don't
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: know if they knew exactly, like whose defense was the
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Raiders really gonna be? Were they going to be a
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Patrick Graham defense or were they going to be a
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Pete Carroll defense. Having week to week as we go
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: here with the veterans staff that they do have, if
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: Rabel knows the guy, or if McDaniels knows the guy,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: or they both know guys, like that's a huge advantage
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: to me about some of the things that the caller
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: brought up there of are they going to attack the
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Steelers defense, how are they going to block it? How
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: are they going to handle Arthur Smith's offense and Aaron
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Rodgers on the other side. When you have that institutional knowledge,
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: I don't think that's insignificant. I think that that's a
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: pretty big advantage for them in this game.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and I mean Vrabel helped game plan for them
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: twice last year in Cleveland.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so yeah, that's a good point as well. All Right,
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: we'll get to more of the Steelers though. Those are
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: good questions, but I want to hold off on that
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: just for a second. Connor is in New Hampshire. What's up? Connor?
- 1:07:31Speaker 13: Hey, guys, been listening since the pl and Cionla stays Sorry,
- 1:07:36Speaker 13: love it, but I wanted to know you kind of
- 1:07:39Speaker 13: talked about the changes the offense made from week one
- 1:07:42Speaker 13: to two. I'm wondering about kind of the changes especially
- 1:07:44Speaker 13: in the blitz the defense may and if that's something
- 1:07:47Speaker 13: that'll be, will be a lower blitzing team moving forward,
- 1:07:49Speaker 13: or if they had more to do with a different
- 1:07:51Speaker 13: play caller on defense.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Connor, thanks to the call. So it's a good point.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: We kind of I waxed poetic about all the good
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: things that they did on offense, but they also went
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: in a totally different direction on defense. After blitzing the
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: heck out of Geno Smith in Week one, they only
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: blitzed to a one time this entire game. I don't
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: think that that's about play caller, you know, difference in
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: play callers or anything like that. That's a game plan thing, like,
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: that's a matchup thing. When you have speed at the
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: skill positions and a really quick trigger in a quarterback
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: like Tua, I think blitzing the Miami Dolphins is not
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: the way to go, Like you are asking for big explosives.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: And as much as I picked on the past defense
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: earlier on in the show, they did only give up
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: four explosives in this game to Miami. They gave up
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: nine of them in week one. They only gave up
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: four in week two. So they did a better job
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: of limiting explosive plays. Now, if they limit anything else,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: like they had to do a great job overall, but
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: they did a better job of limiting explosive plays. So
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: what it tells me about the difference between the defensive
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: play calling from week one to week two is that
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: they're just gonna be a game plan defense. Like some
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: weeks they're gonna think that blitzing is gonna be the
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: best thing for them, and then some weeks they're gonna
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: think playing coverage is gonna be the best thing for them.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: So how you know, do you agree with that or
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: what do you kind of see with those couple things.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that could be as much game plan
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: or more game plan based than it is having a
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: different defensive play call. Like you said, it didn't make
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: sense to blitz Miami, I don't think it makes sense
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: to blitz this Steelers team a ton, at least initially,
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: probably more than they blitzed to Miami, but not the
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: fifty percent blitz right they had against the Raiders. You know,
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: for me, it's can you get pressure with four on
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers? And because you want as many guys in
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: coverage and tonight especially Gonzalese isn't out there, so he
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: has less obvious windows to throw into because you're not
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: gonna fool Aaron Rodgers. But if you can't get pressure
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: with four, then maybe you have to start sending the
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: blitz because you do need to get pressure on him.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: You cannot give him all day.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to talk about DA but let's get
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: through these calls. First. Francisco is in North Carolina. What's up, Francisco?
- 1:10:01Speaker 10: Hey, guys, how you doing good?
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:10:04Speaker 10: All right, So I've got a couple of questions. So
- 1:10:08Speaker 10: my first question starts off with, uh, so I feel
- 1:10:13Speaker 10: like we should necessarily, not necessarily add a veteran presence,
- 1:10:17Speaker 10: but I feel like it wouldn't hurt to help with
- 1:10:19Speaker 10: adding a veteran presence in the dB room, like a
- 1:10:22Speaker 10: Stefan Gilmour out there. I feel like it'd be beneficial
- 1:10:24Speaker 10: for everybody to, you know, learn from somebody who's already
- 1:10:27Speaker 10: done it at a high level. And then second question
- 1:10:30Speaker 10: is you know yesterday's pu Fred asked you were the
- 1:10:34Speaker 10: origin of whit it's called the Yankee concept. I was
- 1:10:36Speaker 10: just wondering if you looked into that, and I'll take
- 1:10:39Speaker 10: it off there.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Thank you guys, Thanks Francisco, thanks for the call. I
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: did not look into that. And this is uh, this
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: is one of my favorite fretisms that he likes to
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: put me on the spot. Yeah, you know that these
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: concepts and things like that are are called things for
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: ridiculous reasons. Yeah, So the Steelers in the first two
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: weeks of the season, they u each game they got
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: beat on an explosive touchdown on the Yankee concept deep
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: post with the deep over route underneath it, and the
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: Jets and the and the Seahawks both hit touchdowns on
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: the same exact play from about the same field position
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: as well. And so yesterday on PU I called it
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the Yankee concept because that's what it's most normally. That's
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: like sort of the general terminology for it. And I
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: had no idea why it was called that, And so
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: that was that atcha I did not I really understand.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: I just wanted to tell everybody because I'm sure a
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: lot of people had no idea what he was talking about.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: Sean is in Vancouver.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: Just to go back, sorry, one second shot on the
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: Gilmore thing, because I've gotten asked to to watch at
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: the Patriots signed Steph on Gilmore. I yeah, I guess
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: adding a veteran presence, I don't know. I think everyone
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: needs to calm down for a little bit until Christian
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: Zoalz comes back. You know. I like Stephan Gilmour, and.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: Isn't Carlton Davis supposed to be the veteran presidence. I
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: already have.
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: So there's that. And also between Gonzalez, Gilmour and Davis,
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: none of those guys playing a slot. I don't think
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: you're moving any of them to safety. Is Gilmour gonna
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: come here and just essentially sit on the bench, or
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: how's it going to go over with Carlton Davis if
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: he gets bench And you're obviously not benching Gilmore once
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: he's healthy, Gonzalez once he's healthy. So unless you know
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: Gonzalez is going to miss like a significant significant amount
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: of time, which as right now is not expected to
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: be the case as far as we know. I just
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: I you're signing Stephan Gilmore because his name is Stephan Gilmore.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: I don't think you're signing in for much more than that.
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: And you know, if they're going to add a corner,
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: maybe at a slock corner, get some death beyond Marcus Jones,
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: But I don't think Stephan Gilmore is coming here to
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: play a rotational role on team that may or may
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: not make the playoffs.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: All right, Sean, go ahead, sorry about that.
- 1:12:37Speaker 14: Yeah, well done, no problem. I really hope goneto this
- 1:12:39Speaker 14: back this week.
- 1:12:40Speaker 11: That'd be great.
- 1:12:41Speaker 14: And now last year, one of the criticisms, and there's
- 1:12:44Speaker 14: been any that Patriots weren't really doing what allowing Drake
- 1:12:49Speaker 14: May to do a quarterback snink. We finally saw that
- 1:12:52Speaker 14: in Miami. The other thing I'd like to find out
- 1:12:56Speaker 14: or see is if Drake May will do as design run. Well,
- 1:13:00Speaker 14: you think that would come maybe against Pittsburgh or in
- 1:13:03Speaker 14: the near future.
- 1:13:04Speaker 13: Leady on that.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Thanks, thanks Sean. So they did run a couple of
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: them against the Raiders in Week one, and they ran
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: a zone read on third and short on Sunday against
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: the Dolphins that Remandre picked it up. The one thing
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: that I would say about the design quarterback runs, you
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: know me, I have no fear about him getting hurt.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: That's not on my why I'm not doing it. He
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: needs to improve though a little bit and like holding
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: the mesh a little bit longer and like really trying
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: to get that defensive end to bite on the fake
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: or on the read point the mesh points. It's not
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: something that Drake is great at yet. And that's like
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: a live in game field thing. You have to get
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: better at it with reps, Like you're not going to
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: be Lamar Jackson or Jayden Daniels at the mesh point
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: right away. You have to do it over and over again,
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: and so I think he needs to be a little
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: bit better at those. The rule of thumb with those
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: types of plays is the reed defender can't make the
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: tackle right, So that's all you're trying to do. You're
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: trying to put the reed defender, the unblocked defender that's
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: reading the mesh out, You're trying to put him in conflict,
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: and then you're trying to make him wrong no matter
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: what he does. If he crashes down to the ball
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: carrier to the back, then you take it off the
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: edge as the quarterback. If he stays out and sets
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: the edge of the defense, you hand it to the back,
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: and you just want to make him wrong and make
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: sure that the red defender doesn't make the tackle. If
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: you do that, then you've done your job as the quarterback.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: So on the remandre a third and short one, Bradley
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Chubb should have made the tackle in the backfield and
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: Rmande duked him in the backfield and got the first down.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: So that wasn't the best mesh point mechanics, so they
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: have to do a little bit better job with that.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: They also they tried to bring Hunter Henry across the
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: formation to try to block Chubb as well, and he
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: ran into I can't remember exactly who it was, he
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: collided with somebody on the way. It was just kind
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: of a mess of a play, and Remandre actually bailed
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: them out from what probably should have been a two
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: yard loss in the backfield and just made a really
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: good run. So another you know he was on our ups,
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: but another one to credit Remandre with. Before we get
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: back to more of these calls and emails, I do
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: want to talk a little bit about the Steelers and
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers because I think a caller earlier kind of
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: brought it up, and you were talking a little bit
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: about what to do against Aaron Rodgers. So watching Rogers,
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: I watched both games so far from Pittsburgh over the
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: last couple of days, and Rogers, I'm trying to I'm
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: telling you on the way over here, I'm trying to
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: come up with the best analogy for this. I don't
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: know if I have yet, But Rogers can still throw
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: the ball. He's still got a cannon, he can still
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: sling it. There's no dip or drop off I would
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: say whatsoever in terms of his arm talent, his athleticism,
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: and his mobility is declining fast. He is immobile. At
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: this point. His pressure desacarates the fifth highest in the league.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: This is Aaron Rodgers, like a guy that used to
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: dance out of pressure and get out of sacks all
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: the time earlier on in his career. So the best
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: comp that I've come up with it is like late
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: in a career of like a great shooter like a
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Ray Allen, where all he can do is stand in
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: the corner and shoot threes. But he's so good at
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: standing in the corner and shoot threes and shooting threes,
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: it adds like five years to his NBA career. Like
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: this is like Miami heat Ray Allen right now for
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers, where if you keep him clean in the
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: pocket and he's just able to sit there and just
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: drop dimes left and right, he can still do that
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: with the best of them. The second he sees pressure,
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: the second that he has to avoid sacks, he can't
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: do it. So what's been the kryptonite for the Steelers
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: for the first couple of weeks has been man coverage
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: because you don't have to account for the quarterback because
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: he can't run, so you just keep him in the pocket.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: You play man to man, bump and run on the
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: outside and make him hold the football and then just
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: hope that the pass rush gets there, and the pass
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: rush is going to get there and suffocate him at
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: some point. So that's been the blueprint that the Jets
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: finally got to in that game a little bit. And
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: then of course the Seahawks held them to you know,
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: seventeen points, held him in check in Week two, but
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: we broke down at the top of the show at
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: the Patriots have had a lot of issues and it's
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: a man coverage, so it's kind of like, you know,
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: a weakness on weakness sort of thing right now. Now,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: if they get Gonzo back, that changes. But the caller
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: earlier said something that I agree with, Carlon Davis on
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: dk YEP, Marcus Jones on Calvin Austin. They do like
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: to run a lot of two tight ends a ton,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: like fifty percent of the time they have two tight
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: ends on the field. So the tight ends and then
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Jalen Warren is a pretty good pass catching back at
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: like a sixty plus yard catch and run in the
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: game the other day against Seattle, so those are the
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: parts that you kind of worry about. But there are
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: two primary receivers DK and Calvin Austen. I don't hate
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: how you match up against those two guys. If you
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: want to play man to man.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't either. I agree with a lot of that.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: The other thing I'm interested in in this matchup and
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: ESPN put a stat up this morning. Let me let
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: me make sure I can find it here. We saw
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: against the Dolphins and this was something I was big
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: on after that game. The Patriots didn't run the ball
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: all the right side, and I think it made them
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: predictable and I think it really hurt their ability to
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: run the ball. So ESPN had this this morning. Through
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: two games this year, teams are running for six point
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: six flat six yards per carry running away from TJ.
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: Watt and two and a half yards per carry running
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: towards TJ. Watt.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: So they're ready for another wonky.
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: Is it going to be a lops? I don't want
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: to see him do it. You got to run at
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: him at least a little bit to upset timing and
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: see what you can get over there.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: And they've gotten gashed on the ground, though.
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: They have gotten gashed on the ground. So if you
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: can do it running off the left side, you do
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: it running off the left side. But don't I would
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: hope they don't handcuff cuff themselves in the run game
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: like they did against the Raiders.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: Yeah. I just it's interesting because they've gotten gash on
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: the ground for the most part of those. Zach Sharbonay
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: kind of struggled in his carries, but Kenneth Walker averaged
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: eight yards of carry, so this might be one of
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: those games again, not to you know, pick on Remandre,
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: but isn't Ramandre is a little bit more Zach Sharbonay
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: than he is Kenneth Walk and Zach Charbonay's issue as
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: they were trying to run off tackle and he just
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: doesn't have the speed to get out there. So maybe
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: this could be a bigger Gibson Henderson game. We'll try
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: to get that speed and get to the edge away
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: from TJ. Watt because that's exactly what the Seahawks did,
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: and they ran the ball effectively and then they play
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: action defectively.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: Along those lines too.
- 1:19:57Speaker 8: Though.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: To go back to the Jets game, and obviously the
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: Jets are running a pretty unique game playing at this point,
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: but Justin Fields had a good game on the ground.
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: So to what you were talking about about the drake
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: made designed runs, do you maybe bring some of that.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Back you could. Justin Fields did a good job with that.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: Uh in week one, Like you said, they also ran
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: like a naked boot down by the goal line where
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: he just like waltzed in for a touchdown. So the
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: boots and some of the misdirection, I.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: Mean he ran even he ran for four yards to
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: carry like that's yeah.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: I just watching the Seahawks tape. They ran outside zone
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: duo and they ran one play of a wide zone
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: lead with the full back right, so still outside zone
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: blocking up front, but the full back is on the way.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: You see the full back to the Steelers last week.
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: You see Robbi Oots last week.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: So the full back was it was that Robby Oots,
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: the Seahawks full back. Yeah, Oh, I didn't know that.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: I was clearing guys out.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so he took He absolutely pancaked the dude on
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: like a pretty big run.
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: For wasn't there one He pancakes one linebacker into another linebacker.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: He takes two guys out.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Yeah. They so the full he was, I didn't know that.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: I wasn't. I wasn't studying the Seahawks.
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: But you're watching the the You're watching the Steelers defense.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: Weren't you? Yeah? But I was watching the All twenty two?
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: But you never look, Oh, this guy's made some plays.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Who is that not the no?
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: Nor you should? Yeah? Maybe I should? You right? So
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: the uh that's how they ran it. I agree with you.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: The Jets were a little bit more option heavy with
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: justin fields. I expect the Patriots to try to run
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: it traditionally down their throats. That that's what I would expect.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: But you could be right. It could be more of
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: the option stuff, especially if more of that, but just
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: mixing it in well Hayward and Watt. If they start
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: to take over the traditional run game, then they might
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: need to do some more deception and more trickery there.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: The Steelers they played a lot more man coverage. I
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: know a lot of people think of the Steelers and
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: they think of Cover three and blitzberg and like all
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. They've transitioned to a lot more
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: man coverage. They're forty one percent man coverage through two weeks.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: They blitz a lot. They're top five in the league
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: in blitz rate. So a lot of their coverages are
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: single high safety man coverage and they have Ramsey and
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: Darius Slay on the outside. Ramsey made a really good
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: play on his pick last week undercutting out, but other
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: than that, he kind of got torched in that game.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: I gave up over one hundred yards in coverage, and
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: the week before Darius Slay kind of struggled. So you're
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: gonna have some single coverage opportunities. You're gonna be able
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: to attack those two guys. They're gonna leave those two
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: guys on islands over the top and if you can
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: get some separation down the field. The Steelers are giving
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: up This is an insane stat and I know it's
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: super small sample size of just two games. They are
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: giving up an explosive pass play on twenty four of
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: their pass plays.
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: That's wild.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: They've given up fourteen plays over fifteen yards in the
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: passing game through two weeks. They are having a lot
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: of trouble with explosives, both in the pass and the
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: run game, and they're kind of getting torched by it.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: This is not the Steelers defense. People will expect it.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: They have five Pro Bowlers on defense and they have
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: not been good through two weeks. So you can look
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: at it this one way. You can sit there and say, well,
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: they're bound to, you know, get back to where they're
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: supposed to be, right your aggression to the mean right,
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: they're bound to get back there. But at the same time,
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: through five weeks or two weeks, to excuse me, they've
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: really struggled on defense. They're down near the bottom of
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: the league in pretty much every statistical category on defense.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: So I'm interested to see this game because McDaniel should
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: know them pretty well, you should know what to expect,
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: and the Steelers just haven't covered very well or stopped
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: the run very well. So I'm interested to see if
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: the Patriots can continue what they did last week in Miami.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: I think they can. I think the same kind of
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: formula could work again this week. You know, outside zone
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: duo to get downhill bootlegs. That was a big part
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: of Sea Seattle average thirteen yards per play action pass
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: attempt in this game last week on Sunday. It's all
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: the same notes and Clint Kubiak is a Shanahan disciple.
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: He coached under Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco, So it's
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: all the same things that the Patriots did in Miami
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: last week, the Seahawks did to the Steelers defense on
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: Sunday in Pittsburgh and they scored thirty one points, like
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: they won the game going away. So I think a
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: lot of those same notes are going to exist for
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: the Patriots again this week, and they should have some
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: success with them. And I can't wait. I can't wait
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: to see Aaron Rodgers too, trying to run away from
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Harold Andrey and Milton Williams. Like if I'm the Patriots,
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: I'm trying to do everything I can to get Aaron
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Rodgers to hold the football because he's going down like
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: a sack of potatoes right now in the pocket when
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: he gets pressured. So that Doull. Those are two things,
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: you know, hitting the Steelers on those explosives and then
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: getting to Rogers.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the key.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: That's the key to the game right there. Let's get
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: back to the calls. Eldred is in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred? Oh? Yeah,
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: there we go.
- 1:24:55Speaker 11: Hey, Hey, good, oh question, I was listening to you.
- 1:25:01Speaker 11: I know they got Ramsey and they got late, but
- 1:25:04Speaker 11: our receivers last week, I know the game plan changed
- 1:25:08Speaker 11: for different things. But then we got enough enough power
- 1:25:11Speaker 11: to get get past those guys, even though I think
- 1:25:14Speaker 11: the other two teams they had some fast receivers they
- 1:25:17Speaker 11: got by. So that's why I was wondering, and Evan,
- 1:25:22Speaker 11: I ain't gonna take my victory I ain't gonna take
- 1:25:23Speaker 11: my victory lap yet. I don't wait to the middle
- 1:25:26Speaker 11: of the season. Quentin Johnson and Dante Thoort, like I
- 1:25:30Speaker 11: was saying before, I'm gonna tack my laps after that,
- 1:25:33Speaker 11: especially after the last week's performance. But other than that,
- 1:25:37Speaker 11: proudly may I hope everybody goes does well and we
- 1:25:40Speaker 11: win later.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: Got thanks, Aldred, appreciate it. Strive safe all right, Yeah,
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: I said yesterday he called into PU and he didn't
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: take a victory lap. On on Dante Thornton and Quentin Johnson,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: who both had good games in that Monday night game.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: From what I saw, did I went to bed. Honestly
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: at half time, I didn't see the whole game, but
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: they looked like they played pretty well. Johnson hadn't had
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: like a sixty yard touchdown on a deep post from
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: from Herbert in that game, so good, good for Eldred.
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: You mentioned the receivers. And this is a point that
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: we've gotten a ton of emails about Alex. I'm glad
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: that Aldred segued us in to the wide receivers in
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: the bag of things that are not so good about
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: the Patriots right now after that win and you know,
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: fine high after beating Miami, what's your Pop Douglas take?
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: You know what's going on with Pop Douglas played fifteen
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: snaps in this game. I believe it was just wasn't
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: part of the game plan. Just really wasn't in the
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: game plan. And I don't think this is necessarily an
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: indictment on Pop. It wasn't like he did something wrong
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: and right bench or was pulled from the game. He
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: just I don't think he was really planning on being
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: involved in this way.
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: I don't know if you have the percentage, but the
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: exact percentages, but they were in heavy personnel twelve, twenty one,
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: twenty two a lot more than they were in Week one.
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: And he's not a guy like he's the third receiver.
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: We've talked about this.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: He's not a base receiver, right.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: He's not a receiver that you use when you're in
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: a two receiver set, and I think even when they
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: were in the three receiver set, mac Hollands seeing more time,
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: I think they wanted their better blockers out there to
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: try to get the run game going, which they did. Now,
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: the question is was that a Miami Dolphins game plan
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: thing or was that a sign of things to come.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: I've said it and I'm gonna keep saying it. His
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: ability to create after the catch, his straight line speed.
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: They need that in the offense. Now. If he's not
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: gonna give it to them, maybe they get it from
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: Kyle Williams. He would be the guy that kind of
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: compares the closest. But they're gonna need to get him
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: going eventually, or at least figure out if they can't
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: get him go and get Kyle Williams going. But I
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: think for this game it was about how they wanted
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: to match it up and wanting those blockers out there.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: And we'll see moving forward when there's matchups that you
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: know or more you're gonna try to hunt, getting him
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: on linebackers and on safeties and creating space and getting
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: yards after the catch. Does he get more involved there
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: or do they continue to go away because they want
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: the bigger personnel, or they simply just move on to
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: Kyle Williams. I will say it again, I do not
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: think Efton Chisholm is his replacement right e ft And
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: Chishlm is more in the role steph On Diggs's in
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: right now, Pop Douglas. There's a straight line speed elements
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: his game that Efton chism doesn't have. That is what
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: I think makes it key that they get him or
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: Kyle Williams going to some extent at some point, ft
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: And Chishm's going to be more in a Diggs roll
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: where where it's the oman role, it's it's it's the
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: short area of quickness and reliable hands and route running
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: and things like that.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: So to your point about the personnel groupings, they were
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: in twelve personnel, so one back, two tight ends on
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: twenty snaps. Yeah, and then they had a couple of
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: two back packages two one pony and then one with
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: the full back, which accounted for thirteen So and then they.
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: Were in twenty two a handful of times two I think, yes.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: So thirty three out of their fifty five snaps were
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: what we would call heavy groupings. They played twenty two
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: snaps and three wide receiver so snaps and.
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: Three wide receiver. Yeah, so Pop Douglas was still on
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: the field for the majority of those, they were just less.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: Of them, right, And so that that's a big part
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: of it to me, is that he's just not a
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: base receiver. Yeah, he is a slot receiver that comes
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: in in eleven personnel like he is a three receiver
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: package guy. He's a slot receiver in that respect, even
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: not skill set wise, but like in that respect, I
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: would think, you know, the comparison is like more Danny Amandola,
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: right that that's kind of the role that Pop Douglas
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: is playing right now for this team. He's not playing
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: the Z receiver role. He's not Julian Edelman. He is
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: Danny Amandola. Julian Edelman right now is Stefan Diggs, Right.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: So that that's I think a good comp right now. Again,
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: not skill set wise, but just usage wise of how
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: they're using Pop Douglas. They wanted to get Mac Collins's
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: run blocking into this game, yeah, And whether you agree
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: with that or not is your decision. I personally do
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: because I see the advantages that it brings in their
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: early down base offense of when he blocks, He's a
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: good blocker. He's an effective blocker, and then all of
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: the play action stuff they built off of that comes
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: because they have to worry about Mac Collins being a
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: plus blocker. If Mac Collins is a speed bump on
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: the way to the ball carrier, then those linebackers in
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: the safeties they're not going to bite on play action
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: when Mac Collins comes to block them if they don't
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: have to worry about Mac Collins being a good blocker.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: So they wanted to get Mac Collins's blocking. They didn't
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: play a lot of three wide receiver. And the other
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: element to this that I do think is a part
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: of it. They're seeing so much zone coverage. Through the
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: first two weeks of the season. They're seeing zone coverage
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: over eighty three percent of the time when Drake May
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: drops back to pass. We have talked about this a
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: lot on this show. I thought he did a better
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: job of it in the summer, and I hope that continues.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: But Pop Douglas is a man coverage beating receiver. Yeah,
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: when you can get him on a matchup in man
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: to man. He's a dynamic route runner. He's extremely quick,
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: he's bursty, he is a man to man coverage winner,
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: that is where he thrives. So when you see eighty
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: three percent of the time when you're in zone for
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: the defense, and we can kind of unpack that as
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: an element too, But when it's eighty three percent of
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: the time zone, to me, like, you're gonna want your
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: more zone reliable players in those spots. Whether it's Digs, Hollins,
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: tight ends, you know, those types of players are going
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: to be the guys that when they settle down in
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: those zones and they present a nice, big quarterback friendly target, like,
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: that's going to be a lot easier for Drake May
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: to throw those passes to those receivers settling in those
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: zone voids than it is to hit a five foot
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: eight receiver settling into a zone void. It's just it
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: is what it is. It's a body type thing, it's
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: a skill set thing. Pop's going to get playing time.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Pop's gonna play, and he's gonna have certain games. Maybe
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: this week, if the Steelers come out and they play
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: a bunch of man coverage like they have in the
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: first two weeks, then I think Pop's gonna play and
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: he's gonna be a factor in the game. So I'm
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: not worried about it with Pop Douglas. I actually, in
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: some respects it shows to me that the coaching staff
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: has a good feel for the roster, because if they
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: put Pop Douglas out there to kick out the force,
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: you know, block in the in the run game, and
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: play as a base receiver and all this different stuff,
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: like they would put you putting him in a position
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: to fail, Like it just isn't what his skill set
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: is necessarily lending itself to. I think he'll play plenty
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: once they get into some more of these man coverage matchups.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: One of the things about the zone thing, though I
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: wanted to ask you about. You could chock it up
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: to two games, small sample size, but eighty three percent
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: zone is a lot of zone coverage. Yeah, and a
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: feel for the way I look at it, if we
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: want to look into it and not just chalk it
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: up to sample size. Is this a Drake May thing?
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: Where the blueprint on Drake May is that he's not
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: consistent with his accuracy. So let's keep him in the pocket.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Let's make him pick us apart, just like the Raiders
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: were able to do in Week one, and let's not
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: let his legs and his mobility beat us is that
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: as do you see that? Because you play man coverage
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: and everybody runs down the field with their man and
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: everything clears out and there sees part like he's just
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: gonna take off. We've seen that and he's been really
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: effective scrambler his rookie season. So I expect to see
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: the Patriots facing a ton of zone this year. I
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: think that that's gonna be the book. All eyes on
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: the quarterback.
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: They're going to do it until he gives him a
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: reason not.
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: To, right, Yeah. And I do think that the boots
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: that helps. That helps a lot against zone. It's not
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: asking him to just drop back pass against zone coverage
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: all the time. When you boot, not only does it
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: cut the field in half, but the misdirection if you
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: have zone eyes and everybody's eyes are in the backfield
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: at the snap because everybody's looking at the quarterback, and
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: then you change the point of attack by bootlegging, then
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: you get everybody flow in one way and then the
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: balls out the other direction. Right that That that's a
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: very good way to mess with the eyes. Like all
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: of this is eyes. It's all eye discipline and being
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: able to see, you know, decipher and process for corners
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: and safeties. If you get those eyes in the wrong
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: places by looking in the backfield, at the at the action,
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: the run action, then you can really help it. Drake
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: with zone, and they hit a couple of plays in
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: this game that way against zone. Let's get back to
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: the phone. So Christian is in LA. What's up, Christian?
- 1:34:46Speaker 15: Hey you guys, nice to talk to you on your
- 1:34:48Speaker 15: own show. Yes, sir, get to chill, relax, talk, do
- 1:34:53Speaker 15: some strategy. I love the x's and part of your show.
- 1:34:56Speaker 15: It's an amazing show and I love you guys for it.
- 1:34:59Speaker 8: Thank you you.
- 1:35:00Speaker 15: You guys have been talking about like how Pittsburgh's defenses
- 1:35:05Speaker 15: or the running packs at this time. To me, week
- 1:35:08Speaker 15: three is kind of what week two is kind of
- 1:35:11Speaker 15: a liar because week three seems to be the week
- 1:35:14Speaker 15: that that the adjustments really kick in. You figure out
- 1:35:18Speaker 15: what you're good at, what's just bad at this early stage,
- 1:35:20Speaker 15: and you make those adjustments. So I don't I don't
- 1:35:23Speaker 15: really see Pittsburgh allowing the same run defense that they've
- 1:35:28Speaker 15: had over the last.
- 1:35:28Speaker 16: Couple of weeks.
- 1:35:29Speaker 15: They figured out now we have a little bit of
- 1:35:31Speaker 15: problem running. So I don't know if they're going to
- 1:35:33Speaker 15: be able to run the ball the same way the
- 1:35:35Speaker 15: last two teams have run on Pittsburgh one of the
- 1:35:38Speaker 15: opposite on the opposite side. You know, let me just say,
- 1:35:42Speaker 15: I've never actually been impressed with DK Metcalfs with route running.
- 1:35:45Speaker 15: I think he's fast, big and sean and can go
- 1:35:47Speaker 15: oh yes, But I think he lacked the subtlety in
- 1:35:50Speaker 15: his route running to really be a threat to to
- 1:35:52Speaker 15: to rip a team apart. So I don't see that
- 1:35:55Speaker 15: we're really you know, have to worry too much about
- 1:35:57Speaker 15: their receivers. Rogers it still has a very strong arm,
- 1:36:00Speaker 15: but he's kind of a mobile now. So if we
- 1:36:02Speaker 15: can just contain him in, I think we've got a
- 1:36:05Speaker 15: really good shot to keep their offense at bay. On
- 1:36:09Speaker 15: our offensive side, I think it's time to unleash Kyle Williams.
- 1:36:13Speaker 15: No team has tape on him. They don't know what
- 1:36:17Speaker 15: we can do and how we can use him. I
- 1:36:19Speaker 15: know he can get behind them, and I just feel
- 1:36:22Speaker 15: like this Sunday is going to be our Kyle Williams
- 1:36:25Speaker 15: and Trey Von Hennison's breakout day. I would also like
- 1:36:28Speaker 15: last thing is for it to be a Stefan Diggs
- 1:36:31Speaker 15: breakout game and isn't by week four, I think we
- 1:36:35Speaker 15: should look at trading Stefan Digs and getting a pick
- 1:36:38Speaker 15: for him. What do you guys think?
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: Thanks for the call, Christian. So to the Kyle Williams thing,
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: I think Kyle Williams is in a similar boat as
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: Pop Douglas. Like, Kyle Williams, I think is going to
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: be a lot more dangerous against teams that play a
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: lot of man to man like whereas speed and his
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: route running and his releases can can really give teams trouble.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: So again, if the Steelers come out and the brand
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: of defense they've played in the first two weeks, which
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: they might not because they've gotten Torch, so they might
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: just kind of throw it out and say we got
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: to start over here. They Pop Douglas, Kyle Williams like
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: this might be more of their kind of game for
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: that reason, So you might get that to the Digs thing.
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: I'm gonna be a little bit defensive with Stefon Diggs. Yeah,
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: it's not because of what happened earlier with you know,
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: his press conference a couple of weeks ago. It's not
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: that I just think that he's been exactly what I
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: wanted him to be for this team so far, and
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: those high leverage gotta have it third and fourth down,
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: late down opportunities when they go for it on fourth down.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: And in the beginning of the game against Miami, the
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: way that he ran that route and just how calm,
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: cool collected he was, and how quarterback friendly he was.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: That's why he's here. He's here to move the chains.
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: And maybe he's not gonna have have the you know,
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: a thousand plus yards or average over ten yards to
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: carry or catch excuse me, like he used to. But
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: for Drake, like, it's so calming, and it's so important
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: for him to have a receiver that in third down
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: and eight with the game on the line, he can
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: go to Digs and he can trust Digs to get open.
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: Like that's such a crucial thing for a quarterback. I
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: can't understand how important and how just much pressure that
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: takes off the quarterback to know that he has a
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: go to guy in those situations. So if all Pop
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: Dougley or excuse me, Digs does is move the chains
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: on third and fourth down, that's worth the money to
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: me because they just haven't had that guy. They haven't
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: had that guy probably since Jacoby myself. So like really
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: since Edelman, like they haven't had that guy and that
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: reliability and that ability to focus in there is just
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: it's huge for this team. What we're gonna say.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: Let's also not forget he's less than a year removed
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: from a torn acl Like there is going to be
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: a build up process. You're not gonna get the steph
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: On Diggs you got in Buffalo, Nobody. You shouldn't be
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: of that assumption if he's moving the chains for you
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: and coming up big on third down and fourth down
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: and things like that. He was there leading receiver among
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: wide receivers on Sunday, Like you can't you can't talk
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: about trading him. That they need him on this team
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: right now. Yeah, there's no the breakout game might not happen.
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: He might just steadily be five catches fifty yards for
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: them for first downs, like that might be what he
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: is each week. Great, that's and all they're paying him
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: this much money and blah blah blah. It's a lot
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: of incentives.
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: And plus when it's again when it's like the money downs,
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: when it's third and seven and the game is on
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: the line and he picks up eight or nine yards.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: It's worth it.
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: It's having a guy that can do that consistently and regularly.
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: They haven't had that since Kobe Myers. Yeah, you need
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: somebody who you rely on to do that. And I
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: know people like Fton Chisholm. He had a really good
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: summer and I who think he is a future in
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: this league. I don't know that with a young quarterback,
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: you're just turning to an undrafted rookie kind of sight
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: unseen in such a major role.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: So the other thing that Christian brought up there was
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: the run game in Pittsburgh, adjusting and being better against
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: the run, which I think is possible. Especially Hayward and TJ.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: Watt is saying like enough of this run game nonsense,
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: like we're kind of taking over. What I think is
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: interesting though about the Patriots run game from Week one
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: to week two. They actually had almost identical success rates
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: in week one to week two. I know it didn't
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: feel like that, but they were thirty six percent success
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: rate in week two and a thirty five percent success
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: rate in week one. Now, they had a couple of
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: explosive runs in week two that it didn't get in
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: week one. M Andre's twenty one yarder and Gibson's fifteen
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: yarder were big plays in this game. But you just
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: see the balance and how important that balance is to
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: just setting up play action and even if they don't
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: run the ball super effectively, just committing to the run
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: early in the game, like they did on Sunday where
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: they came out against the Dolphins. I think they ran
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: the ball on the first three plays of the game
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: that all it does is just set up everything else
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: that they're trying to do. So even if they're not
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: running the ball super effectively, I think what they learned
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: from Week one is that you have to still stick
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: with the run game in the second half. Like they
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: went away from the run game in the second half
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: against the Raiders and they lost all of the window
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: dressing from the offense. They lost all the play action,
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: they lost all the bootlegging, they lost all the motions. Right,
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: it was stagnant drop back pass and they just can't
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: play that way. So I think that they learned their
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: lesson on that. You know, they ran the ball traditionally
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: in Week one seventeen times. In Week two that was
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: twenty five times. Like that's just a big difference. Yeah,
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: oh yeah, it's a huge difference. All Right, Mark is
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: in Connecticut. What's up? Mark?
- 1:42:00Speaker 9: Hey, guys, how you guys doing today?
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: Good bat?
- 1:42:03Speaker 9: All right, just got two quick things for you are
- 1:42:06Speaker 9: one observation and then the other one a question. The
- 1:42:09Speaker 9: first observation that I noticed, and I've been calling for
- 1:42:12Speaker 9: for a long time on is to use Drake May's abilities,
- 1:42:16Speaker 9: which is the rolling out of the pocket and getting
- 1:42:20Speaker 9: them on the move to throw. And that was just
- 1:42:23Speaker 9: amazing that I saw in the second game versus Miami
- 1:42:26Speaker 9: that they did a lot of that and he just
- 1:42:28Speaker 9: looked really comfortable doing that, and I'm hoping that they'll
- 1:42:32Speaker 9: keep incorporating those kind of, you know, attributes that the
- 1:42:35Speaker 9: kid has into that. The question that I have.
- 1:42:39Speaker 15: Is Kyle Williams.
- 1:42:41Speaker 9: Is he a guy that is able to beat the
- 1:42:44Speaker 9: zone coverage on the outside with his speed and the
- 1:42:48Speaker 9: strong hands that the kid has. That's my question on
- 1:42:50Speaker 9: you guys.
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: Thanks Mark, Yeah, it's a good question. I I look
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: at Kyle Williams as the guy that's going to be
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: better off against man like when they can get him
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: off the line of scrimmage, open them up, get his
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: speed going, get the dynamic routes similar different body types,
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: Like he's a little bit bigger than Pop Douglas, but
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: similar idea as Pop Douglas, where Hollins booty digs. Like
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: those guys are the guys to me that are the
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: zone beating receivers that are going to find those soft
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: spots that are going to know, you know, if it's
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: to cover two, you know, too high safety, like the
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: corner is going to be trapping or squatting in the
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: flat and like where's that hole right behind him? Or
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: if it's cover three, do you have that ability to
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: run off the corner and then kind of hitch you
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: know underneath it. Like those types of things I think
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: are more a feel for those guys. And again if
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: the Steelers play a lot of man coverage, because I
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: can tell by the calls and the emails that people
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: want to get Douglas and Kyle Williams going.
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, like you want this because the offense
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: needs the speed and that's not I don't want to
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: come across as saying those guys are you know the
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: fast and conversation there's an and with both of them.
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: Pop Douglas his ability to win at the top of
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: the route and manage his ability to create after the catch.
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: Kyle Williams had to release his ability to get off
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: the line. He has an ability to create after the
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: catch as well. But I get it. You want to
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: get the speed going that you can't force it. You
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: also don't want to just force it and kind of
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: handcuff yourself from everything else you're doing.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: Okay, So a couple of emails to wrap up the
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: show here. So one theory on running left versus running
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: right and favoring running left was this is from will
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: and Toronto talking about the stunting on the left side
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: that we saw in the preseason that gave Campbell and
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: Jared Wilson problems. I think one of the things that
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: you might be seeing, and this could go either way.
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: I could hear arguments for both sides. They're running a
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: lot more outside zone and actually an outside zone. I
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: would say the backside blocks are just as important as
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: the front side blocks because you're trying to set up
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: those cutback lanes back through the middle of the field.
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: So if they feel like Moses and on anywhere, they're
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: run blockers like they might. Actually sometimes teams will run
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: outside zone away from their best blocker so that he
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: can try to pin down the defense and create those
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: cutback lanes, So that might be a part of it.
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: Duo is kind of similar, where like if you run duo,
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: you're running towards the tight end usually in duo, And
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: if you want to do that, then like again like
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: kind of bouncing or cutting up the field, it might
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: be the better path. And if you put your best
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: blockers on the backside of duo, then you might be
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: able to kind of set up a crease for them
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: to cut back that way too. So they did run
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: power right behind Morgan Moses in the right side, and
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: Morgan Moses and Austin Hooper were on a double team
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: that caved in the line and got that twenty one
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: yard run going. So maybe it's your thing is just
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: the simplest path forward, right, Like, yeah, your best run
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: blockers run right behind them, But I do think some
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: of the schemes that they're running in the run game
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: now might favor your best run blockers actually being on
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: the back side of the run instead of the front
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: side of the run. Plus, like, if you want to
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: try to get the edge on the outside zone, like
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: Campbell's much more likely to get the edge than Morgan
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Moses because of his athleticism. So this is from John
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: and Louisiana. He's making fun of you, Alex. So, Alex,
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: I watched you and Brian Hines shout out Brian Hines
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: Dolphins versus Patriots preview, and you said, I quote, if
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: you want to be that team, go be Miami. We
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: look at all the motion. He just does sound like
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: something that you would say. Yeah, and that's all that was.
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: We're playing in my head Sunday because Miami was motioning
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: us to death. I blame you because that was an
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: all time quote. Lol.
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: Who won the game? Which in which coaches? In which
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: coach is going to be employed at this time next week?
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: Who ran more motion this week versus last week? Patriots?
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: Okay, well, the Patriots motion had purpose, the Dolphins got
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: called for a costly illegal shift penalty, that's true. And again,
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: who won the game?
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: Do they?
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: I have no problem with motion with purpose. Yes, we're
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: gonna run this guy back and forth left and right
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: five times because we just want to wear out your corner. Eh.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: As Josh McDaniel said, motioning is fun, which I'm his
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: my words, not his. I think that that's kind of
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: him being like, all right, your cute little motion, but
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: it's okay.
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: Well yeah, no, I think that I think the Dolphins
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: motion at times out of hubers. I think Mike McDaniel
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: wants to look cool and wants people to post the
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: clips on Twitter and be like, what a genius this
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: guy looks fancy.
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: There's no doubt about that.
- 1:47:33Speaker 3: Doesn't do anything. Sometimes it does, so I'm not saying
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: it always doesn't. But and are the motions he's doing legal?
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: And if he's getting away with it, fine, credit to him.
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: But I don't think that their motions at the snap
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: always have a purpose. The cheap motions where they motion
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: he'll into the route is like impossible to defend.
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: You mean the one where he gets a running start.
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's impossible to defend. Uh. Since that email
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: is picking on you, I'll pick on myself with this email.
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: Noah emails an Alex are you hearing this? Evan's a
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: run game apologist. Now I've gotten a couple of these that, like,
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: you know, people both sides.
- 1:48:08Speaker 3: But some people are worried, Oh you're in on establishing
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: the run now, this is great.
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: Some people are worried that I'm so run game centric
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: right now is in like, oh god, Evan doesn't think
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: that they can do anything else good, so they have
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: to run the ball. And then some people are making
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: fun of me for being a run game apologist. I
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: want to be clear about my run game thoughts. My
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: run game thoughts are running the ball to set up
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: play action. That's why I want them to run the football.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: It's not to be oh, yeah, we're gonna ground and
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: pound and we're gonna we're gonna out at a certain point,
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: we're gonna be the tougher team and bite knee caps. No,
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: that's not what it is.
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: At a certain point. There's not much of a difference
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: there is. You got to establish the run. You have
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: to establish the run.
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: Okay, but I'm just being very crystal clear that it's not.
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: Is establishing the run important?
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Yes or no to this offense? Yes, all right, there
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: you go. That'd make you happy, Yes, very much. Want
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: to talk a few injuries here in the last five
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: minutes of the show. One of them I think is
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: kind of under the radar. This is from Michael in Pinegrove.
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: Should we be concerned about Morgan Moses, especially against t
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: J Watt this week?
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, absolutely. I actually got a question in my
- 1:49:16Speaker 3: mailbag this week that was, what's the drop off from
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: Morgan Moses to Marcus Bryant. I really didn't know how
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: to answer it because we didn't don't him right, We
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: don't have a ton of exposure. I think it's fair
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: to be encouraged by what you saw from Morgan from
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: Marcus Bryant this summer, like he had a good summer and.
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: I don't know that he was a player that was
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: always going to make the team. I think he earned
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: his way onto the team and he deserves credit, and
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: he had a good summer, and happy to see it.
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: It was a lot against backups and tjo Wat's a
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: pretty big jump from the average backup you see in
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: the NFL. So I don't know if the question was
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: about injury or if it was just about wanting to
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: bench Morgan Moses because of the false starts or whatever,
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: which I think would be premissture. Well, the question I
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: got him saying, but because he's from sports have listeners, yeah,
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: where there's generally a little more emphasis on this guy sucks.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but oh I wonder why.
- 1:50:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I honestly I kind of skipped it,
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: and I apologize because I don't know what the drop
- 1:50:13Speaker 3: off is. I don't know what more Marcus Bryant's gonna
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: look like in the NFL. I don't know that this
- 1:50:17Speaker 3: is the week I want to find out up against TJ.
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: Watt and kind of drop them in cold. They might
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: have to depending on where Morgan Moses is at health wise.
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: But we talked about this before the season. They have
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: so many rookies and key roles, and there were six
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: that were starting right away. Marcus Bryant is kind of
- 1:50:35Speaker 3: a quick seventh. Only seventeen tackles last year started all
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: seventeen games for their teams. Only two teams I think
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: it was the Titans and Packers had both tackles start
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: all seventeen games. So odds are Marcus Bryant. We're gonna
- 1:50:53Speaker 3: see him at some point. We're gonna have to find
- 1:50:54Speaker 3: out ands TJ. Watt might not right now, nothing against
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: the kid, This is probably not the week want to
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: do that.
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: So I think Morgan Moses I know yet I almost
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: had him on the downs. He was not particularly good
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: in this game on Sunday, but he also wasn't bad
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: by any means.
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: If not for the penalties, I think you kind of
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: just move on. He wasn't good or bad. He was
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: kind of fine and would sink it.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: And that's such a that's such an improvement from where
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: their right tackle play has been right that he is
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: he's really earned that set it and forget it money.
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: So far, I would say week one he was really
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: really good against Matt Crosby. That last week he was hurt.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: But there's a bunch of reporting coming out of the
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: locker room postgame in Miami that I think Doug Kyde
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: said he saw him with a boot on his foot.
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: A lot of limping from Morgan Moses. I would highly doubt,
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: and this is just speculation and has zero shelf life
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: because we're going to find out in like two hours.
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: I would highly doubt that he's going to practice on Wednesday.
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: I feel like he might be a veteran rest slash
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: injury rest Wednesday player all year. Yeah, as a thirty
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: four years in this league, So I am a little
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: bit worried about Morgan Moses. It changes a lot in
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: my opinion if it's Morgan, if it's Marcus Bryant against
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: TJ Wytt instead, of Morgan Moses, like now you have
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: to kind of reinvent your entire UH protection scheme, protection plan,
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: like you got yeah, one hundred percent.
- 1:52:17Speaker 3: I will say this about Morgan Moses though, and there
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: was a lot of talk about his age when they
- 1:52:21Speaker 3: signed him. He plays. He plays, and he'll tough through
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: it and he'll play hurt. He didn't miss after his
- 1:52:28Speaker 3: rookie year. He didn't miss a game until twenty twenty three,
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: and then he's missed three games each the last two years.
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: It's pretty solid for a tackle to play twenty eight
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: games too over the span of two years. He has
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: missed some time. The last couple of years, he's gotten
- 1:52:43Speaker 3: on this other side of thirty. He hope this isn't
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: one of the game. You don't want him to miss
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: any games, but this especially, you hope isn't a game
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: that he misses. But he's not somebody I worry about
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: being like, I don't want to risk it this week. No,
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: I think if he can go, he'll go, and if
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: you know, if it means in a walking boot after
- 1:52:59Speaker 3: the game, he's didn't practice during the week, if he
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: can get out there on Sunday, he seems like the
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: kind of guy that will get out there on Sunday.
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: So last thing here speaking of zero shelf lives. But
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: there are a bunch of people watching live, do we
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: or do we not see Christian Gonzales at practice oh
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: for the next couple of days.
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like Vrabel's saying there's a chance
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: he plays this week. He's not gonna say that and
- 1:53:20Speaker 3: then not every practice, right, So.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: You're saying there's a chance.
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: Here's where I'm at with Chris Gonzalez. Yes, I actually
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: think that what it comes down to is what has
- 1:53:30Speaker 3: he been able to do behind the scenes. We've talked
- 1:53:33Speaker 3: about this before. Corner is not a position, not that
- 1:53:35Speaker 3: practice is not important, but it's not like wide receiver
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: where you got to get the timing down with the
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: quarterback and the timing down with the other guys running
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: the routes and the context of the offense and the chemistry.
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: Corner is it's more in the film room than on
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: the practice field. The way they're going to play at
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: man coverage, right, Study this guy, learn his routree, learn
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: the nuances of his release, things like that, and go
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: use that against him on Sunday. That's what you do.
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: So if Gonzales can still do that, it's just what
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: kind of shape is he in because he hasn't practiced
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: in six months.
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: It's a conditioning.
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: If they've been being especially careful, right and he's still
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: running around, he's still doing his conditioning on a side field,
- 1:54:10Speaker 3: he just simply they didn't want him taking the contact,
- 1:54:14Speaker 3: then he may be able to go this week. If
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: he returns to practice. If it's actually been bad and
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: he couldn't even do the conditioning, then you're probably looking
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: at another week even once he returns to practice.
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: Or maybe even it's just like third downs, like if
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: you play him in third downs and like two minute.
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: Ham strings are just so weird.
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: It's like, but even that, like if he plays twenty
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: twenty five snaps, I think it's a good thing to do,
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: just to kind of.
- 1:54:37Speaker 3: East back and fields this week for the Jets.
