- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Brady Randall.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: We're continuing to look at Genesis 37 in the account of Joseph and the attempt to take his life.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And today we reach a crescendo as the brothers' plot to kill him takes shape.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Yesterday we saw that their plot of trying to put him into a pit and make it look like an animal had viciously killed him.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: But here's what we read when we pick up in verse starting in verse twenty one.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Let's not take his life, he said.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Don't shed any blood.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Throw him into the cistern here in the wilderness, but don't lay a hand on him.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Reuben said this to rescue him from them and to take back to his father.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: So when Joseph came to his brothers and they stripped him of his robe, the ornate robe he was wearing, and they took him and they threw him into the cistern.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: The cistern was empty, there was no water in it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Their camels were loaded with spices, balm, and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Judah said to his brothers, What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay a hand on our brother.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: After all he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: His brothers agreed.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up and out of the cistern, and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites who took him to Egypt.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: He went back to his brothers and said, The boy isn't here.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Where can I turn now?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat, and dipped the robe in the blood.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, We found this.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: He recognized it and he said, It is my son's robe.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Some ferocious animal has devoured him.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourned for his son for many days.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: No, he said, I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: So his father wept for him.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Now what jumps off the page to me in this section is Reuben's attempt, or I would say his failed attempt to be an intercessor.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Imagine the position that he's in.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: He's the older brother, and with that comes more responsibilities.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: When the other brothers desired to kill Joseph, he tried to prevent bloodshed.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: We see that his conscience gets the best of him.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: A few chapters later, when the brothers come back to Joseph after he's in power, he doesn't want to have blood on his hands.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: He knows the grief that that will cause his father and probably his own brothers as well.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So instead he proposes a way, and Judah says that they should sell him instead to the Ishmaelites.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Reuben was actually planning on rescuing him later, but it appears he didn't have the courage to stand up in the moment.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: He knew the right thing to do, but he seemed to beat around the bush to do it.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: He went back to the cistern to rescue Joseph, but he wasn't there.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And I wonder if you've ever had one of those convicting moments in your own life where you knew the right thing to do in the moment.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: You were convicted by it, but you refused to act upon it.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Your intentions were right and pure, but you didn't have the wherewithal to pull it off.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And instead, the brothers, they took the robe, the bloody robe, to show it to their father who is beside himself.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: He tears his clothes and he puts on sackcloth and he mourned for many days, and I can't imagine a greater loss than the loss of a child.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And for Joseph, this happened to be his favorite son.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: The son for whom he bought the ornate and colorful robe, the son that brought him delight, the dreamer, the son who was going to do great things and now gone.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: And his father wept.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And this is a sad, seemingly tragic ending to a story.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Family betrayal, jealousy, envy, and the story isn't over.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: It's not over for Joseph, for Jacob, or even for Reuben, as we will see in these next several weeks.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Not due to anything these men or brother did, but because God was working in the background.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: But I want to leave you with this today, and that is that Reuben is the failed intercessor.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: I say failed because as good as his intentions were, he didn't pull it off.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And at times, as good as some of our intentions are, we don't or can't always follow through.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And that's why I'm so glad there was another intercessor to come, Jesus Christ.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: An intercessor who would see you and I in our pits, the pit of life, the pit of despair, the pit of being an enemy of God, and what we were powerless to do in pulling ourselves out of the pit.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Jesus came and rescued us.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: He saw our perilous condition and he interceded for us.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: He died and bled in our place.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: He took the wrath we deserve, and not only that, he died and he rose again.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And he now promises to intercede for those who love him and trust in him.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Jesus was the greater Reuben.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: He came to our rescue if we'll humbly accept his gracious gift.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Thanks for joining us here today.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of great content to explore on Orchard Hill Plus and on the Orchard Hill main feed from the weekend.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Have a great day.
