Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: I just finished reading the book Kujo. My God, it's
- 0:22Speaker 1: brutal and sad. This book is not what I expected.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be about a monster
- 0:29Speaker 1: dog or something.
- 0:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:31Speaker 1: There's so many references to kujo and pop culture that
- 0:34Speaker 1: are almost like tongue in cheek that I kind of
- 0:37Speaker 1: had a feeling that it was just going to be
- 0:39Speaker 1: like a scary story about a dog that gets rabies.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And I'd seen the movie a long time ago when
- 0:44Speaker 1: I was a little kid, but I don't really remember
- 0:46Speaker 1: anything about it. I just remember the lady and the
- 0:49Speaker 1: kid stuck in the car, and the Saint Bernard's just
- 0:52Speaker 1: going fucking ballistic the whole time trying to get at him.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I can't remember really anything else about it. So I'm
- 0:57Speaker 1: gonna have to watch the movie after this too, But
- 0:59Speaker 1: that's for the future.
- 1:00Speaker 2: This is now.
- 1:01Speaker 1: This is We're talking about the damn book right now,
- 1:03Speaker 1: And I've got my copy of Kujo right here from
- 1:06Speaker 1: the number one author of Firestarter, Stephen King. I haven't
- 1:10Speaker 1: read Firestarter yet, so maybe that'll be on deck soon enough.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So this was a pretty nice read. Honestly, I enjoyed
- 1:17Speaker 1: this book a lot more than I expected.
- 1:19Speaker 2: To.
- 1:19Speaker 1: This is one of Stephen King's books that I've kind
- 1:21Speaker 1: of been putting off. I've been reading a lot of
- 1:24Speaker 1: Stephen King lately. I got through The Stand at Christine
- 1:27Speaker 1: Salem's Lot. I just finished that one as well The Shining,
- 1:31Speaker 1: So I've been doing a lot of Stephen King and
- 1:33Speaker 1: it's it's been great. I've enjoyed almost all of his
- 1:36Speaker 1: books so far, but this is my first time really
- 1:38Speaker 1: going through everything, and I'm not doing it in any
- 1:41Speaker 1: particular order. I honestly only landed on Kujo because I
- 1:44Speaker 1: just finished Needful Things month and I enjoyed the town
- 1:49Speaker 1: of Castle Rock so much that I was like, you
- 1:51Speaker 1: know what, I got to check it out. I got
- 1:53Speaker 1: to see what else happens in Castle Rock. So let's
- 1:55Speaker 1: let's check out Kujo. And I'm glad I did. I mean,
- 1:58Speaker 1: it's a it's an incredible sad story. It's just straight
- 2:02Speaker 1: up a tragedy, the whole thing, from start to finish.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I feel like.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Right away, like you know, the dog gets Raybi's because
- 2:10Speaker 1: just through pop culture, just through osmosis, everybody pretty well
- 2:14Speaker 1: knows that that's what the book's gonna be about. And
- 2:16Speaker 1: that's sad enough, because you see that coming right away.
- 2:19Speaker 1: They set up this great beginning where you see Kujo
- 2:22Speaker 1: as this lovely dog who's just so friendly to everybody,
- 2:26Speaker 1: picks up little four year old tad by his overalls
- 2:29Speaker 1: and sets him back on his feet when he falls down,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and it's just like, Kujo's just one of those dogs
- 2:35Speaker 1: where you're like, it doesn't get any better than this,
- 2:37Speaker 1: you know what I mean. But then he gets Rabi's
- 2:39Speaker 1: and he goes fucking ballistic. So let's just see what
- 2:43Speaker 1: the back of the book says about Kujo, and I'll
- 2:46Speaker 1: kind of give my thoughts on that. The Ultimate Beast
- 2:49Speaker 1: is loose and Stephen King is sending him your way.
- 2:52Speaker 1: A big friendly dog chases a rabbit into a hidden
- 2:55Speaker 1: underground cave and stirs a sleeping evil crueler than death itself.
- 3:00Speaker 1: A terrified four year old boy sees his bedroom closet
- 3:02Speaker 1: door swing open, untouched by human hands, and screams at
- 3:06Speaker 1: the unholy red eyes gleaming in the darkness. The little
- 3:09Speaker 1: main town of Castle Rock is about to be invaded
- 3:12Speaker 1: by the most hideous menace ever to savage the flesh
- 3:15Speaker 1: and devour the mind. Kujo hits the Jugular King's most
- 3:19Speaker 1: disturbing horror yet, The New York Times says, I don't
- 3:22Speaker 1: know I would. I mean, I've read books since Kujo
- 3:24Speaker 1: or whatever, but this one is probably the most like
- 3:27Speaker 1: devastating book that I've read so far. At least, it's
- 3:30Speaker 1: just very sad. I don't know what to compare it to, honestly,
- 3:34Speaker 1: but the only book that I've read that's sadder than
- 3:37Speaker 1: Kujo is so far anyway, Lovely Bones.
- 3:40Speaker 2: That book.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'm not going to get into Lovely Bones too much
- 3:45Speaker 1: right now, but as I was reading that book, and
- 3:48Speaker 1: I think it definitely hits you harder if you're a parent,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I'm assuming, but as I was reading Lovely Bones, it
- 3:54Speaker 1: was like, after every chapter I had to take a
- 3:57Speaker 1: break and try not to cry my little ass off
- 3:59Speaker 1: because I was just like, what the fuck is this
- 4:02Speaker 1: book doing to me? Anyway, we'll get back to Kujo now.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Based on this description on the back of the cover
- 4:07Speaker 1: of the book, you would almost think that, like, this
- 4:10Speaker 1: is going to be some sort of like monster dog story, right,
- 4:13Speaker 1: That's kind of what I think it puts out there anyway,
- 4:17Speaker 1: that it's going to be this monster Saint Bernard terrorizing
- 4:20Speaker 1: Castle Rock. But it's not really the case. It's more
- 4:22Speaker 1: of like a one location type of story as far
- 4:25Speaker 1: as the Kujo stuff goes. The thing that really surprised
- 4:28Speaker 1: me about the book is that it's not so much
- 4:31Speaker 1: a horror book other than like some of the stuff
- 4:33Speaker 1: with Kujo, which is split up pretty evenly between like
- 4:37Speaker 1: some of the other things that are going on, It
- 4:39Speaker 1: to me felt like a drama almost more than anything.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You've got this other story line going on with Donna Trenton,
- 4:47Speaker 1: who is the wife of Vic Trenton, and she's also
- 4:50Speaker 1: Tad's mom. They're like the main family in the story.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I would say there's like two main families in the story,
- 4:57Speaker 1: and Donna Trenton's the mom of this one. Everything that's
- 5:00Speaker 1: going on with her and Vic feels much more just
- 5:03Speaker 1: like a straight up drama where they're having these relationship problems.
- 5:07Speaker 1: They've moved to Castle Rock from New York. Right away,
- 5:11Speaker 1: Vic's got drama with his job because the cereal that
- 5:15Speaker 1: he's doing ads for put some red dye in this
- 5:19Speaker 1: new type of cereal that made all these kids throw
- 5:21Speaker 1: up all this red shit, and everyone thought their kids
- 5:23Speaker 1: were getting sick and puking of red blood and shit
- 5:26Speaker 1: like that their kids are. You know, everyone thinks their
- 5:28Speaker 1: kids are fucking dying because of the Cereal but really
- 5:31Speaker 1: it's just red dye.
- 5:32Speaker 2: But it creates this huge.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Backlash against the Cereal company and Vic has to go
- 5:37Speaker 1: on a business trip to New York for ten days
- 5:39Speaker 1: with his coworker Roger, and that leaves Donna and Tad
- 5:44Speaker 1: home alone. The whole reason why they get into this
- 5:46Speaker 1: fucking mess is because everybody keeps putting things off and
- 5:50Speaker 1: no one's communicating properly.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Like there's this whole deal with.
- 5:54Speaker 1: The car, and Donna's gonna you know, Tad's gonna set
- 5:57Speaker 1: up in a point as a fucking kid. Scratch that,
- 6:01Speaker 1: not Tad. Tad's a child other than Kujo. He's the other,
- 6:06Speaker 1: like completely innocent party here where it's like people should
- 6:09Speaker 1: be taken better care of Tad, honestly, Holy fuck. But anyway,
- 6:14Speaker 1: Vic is supposed to be setting up a car appointment
- 6:16Speaker 1: for Donna and he doesn't. So she's like, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I got this problem or whatever with the car, and
- 6:21Speaker 1: he's like, why don't you take it down to Joe
- 6:23Speaker 1: Camber's garage. That's where we took the Jaguar that one time.
- 6:27Speaker 1: We met Kujo. Joe Camber's the owner of Kujo. Him,
- 6:31Speaker 1: his wife Charity and their son Brett are the other
- 6:35Speaker 1: basically mirror image family to uh, Tad, Donna, and Vic.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And so she's like, you know what, I'm just gonna
- 6:42Speaker 1: handle this shit on my own. I'm gonna take it
- 6:44Speaker 1: down to Joe Cambra's garage and we'll see what's up
- 6:46Speaker 1: with the damn car. And when she goes there, Kujo's
- 6:49Speaker 1: already got rabies. He's he's already fucking killed Joe. He's
- 6:52Speaker 1: already killed Joe's friend Gary Pervier. And basically they just
- 6:56Speaker 1: get trapped in Joe Camber's driveway by Kujo because he's
- 7:01Speaker 1: just sitting there like watching over them, trying to fucking
- 7:03Speaker 1: kill him the whole time. And that's kind of the
- 7:05Speaker 1: whole drama that's or no, that's not even all the
- 7:09Speaker 1: drama that's going on. That's basically just how we set
- 7:12Speaker 1: up Tad and Donna getting stuck at Joe Camber's garage.
- 7:17Speaker 1: The other drama is that Donna has been fucking this guy,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Steve Kemp, behind her husband's back, and he finds out
- 7:24Speaker 1: about it because she refuses Steve Kemp's advances, she turns
- 7:27Speaker 1: him down, and he's so pissed off about it. He
- 7:30Speaker 1: writes a letter to Vic basically explaining, like, I've been
- 7:34Speaker 1: fucking your wife. What do you think about that? And obviously,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you know, he puts some details in there that basically
- 7:40Speaker 1: prove that he's not lying or making it up or whatever,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and Vic's like, fuck, So, now Vick's having to deal
- 7:46Speaker 1: with this bullshit at work and deal with this fucking
- 7:49Speaker 1: bullshit wife. Donna, fucking goddamn Donna.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Dude. I don't know.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I feel like everyone in this book has written really realistically,
- 7:57Speaker 1: like very realistically, but I can't say that Donna didn't
- 8:01Speaker 1: fucking piss me off the whole time. It goes back
- 8:04Speaker 1: to it goes back to some of my expectations about
- 8:07Speaker 1: the book.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That were way off. Like I was.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I had these expectations about the book that it was
- 8:13Speaker 1: going to be like mostly horror slash survival because I
- 8:17Speaker 1: knew they got stuck at Joe Camber's garage, and I
- 8:20Speaker 1: knew they were stuck in the car the whole time,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and they're trying to figure out how to get out
- 8:23Speaker 1: of this situation in the broke down car etc. So
- 8:27Speaker 1: my thoughts were, like, we're going to see you to
- 8:29Speaker 1: see Donna basically going through all these different options of
- 8:33Speaker 1: like how she can get out of this situation, and
- 8:36Speaker 1: she kind of does in the book, but it's just
- 8:38Speaker 1: like her thinking about it. She thinks about trying to
- 8:41Speaker 1: run into the Canberra's house, but she's like, what if
- 8:43Speaker 1: the door's locked. Kuja's going to fucking eat me if
- 8:46Speaker 1: the door's locked. And then she sees a baseball bat
- 8:48Speaker 1: in the yard and she thinks maybe I could get
- 8:49Speaker 1: the bat and fucking beat the dog to death, but
- 8:52Speaker 1: she keeps putting that off because she's not sure. Again,
- 8:55Speaker 1: she's like, well, if I get fucking killed, then Tad's
- 8:57Speaker 1: going to be stuck in the car by himself. He's
- 8:59Speaker 1: a little kid, he's like four years old or something,
- 9:02Speaker 1: so I don't really want to risk it, you know.
- 9:04Speaker 1: So she keeps just like putting it off and putting
- 9:06Speaker 1: it off. But really that's kind of always see her do.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I think there's one time when she gets out because
- 9:11Speaker 1: she thinks Kujo's gone, but he's waiting at the front
- 9:15Speaker 1: of the Pinto and as soon as she like closes
- 9:17Speaker 1: the door, he like leaps at her and he fucking
- 9:19Speaker 1: bites her stomach and her leg, which is crazy because
- 9:23Speaker 1: you know he's got rabies, now she's got rabies. It's
- 9:25Speaker 1: it's incredibly scary. It's one of those scenarios where it's
- 9:29Speaker 1: like it's, you know, easier said than done, like when
- 9:31Speaker 1: you're when I was reading the book and stuff like that,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I'm sitting there just like, come on, fucking Donnie, you
- 9:36Speaker 1: gotta do something else. You gotta get out of this
- 9:38Speaker 1: fucking pinto and find that fucking dog.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Like I was in my mind, I was going on.
- 9:46Speaker 1: One of those Billy Madison rants about the puppy that
- 9:49Speaker 1: lost its way. I was just like, bitch, you gotta
- 9:52Speaker 1: get out of this fucking pinto. You gotta whoop that
- 9:54Speaker 1: dog's ass. I'm sorry, even if it kills you, you gotta
- 9:57Speaker 1: fucking kill that dog or something or I don't know.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know if that's the right choice.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It was just it was a frustrating one. But you
- 10:05Speaker 1: don't really see her trying anything else other than like
- 10:08Speaker 1: at the very last moment, and I'm going to spoil
- 10:12Speaker 1: the book obviously, I feel like, you know, it's a
- 10:14Speaker 1: nineteen eighty one release. If you haven't read the book
- 10:17Speaker 1: by now and you're watching this video, too bad, it's
- 10:20Speaker 1: getting spoiled for you. But I will say, if you
- 10:22Speaker 1: haven't read it, or even if you listen to all
- 10:24Speaker 1: this and I spoil it for you and you know
- 10:26Speaker 1: exactly what happens, read it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It's a fucking great book. And honestly I heard the
- 10:32Speaker 1: ending before I read it. I can't remember where, but
- 10:36Speaker 1: I did have the ending of the book spoiled for me.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And the ending of the book is different than the
- 10:40Speaker 1: ending of the movie. So if you have seen the
- 10:41Speaker 1: movie and you haven't read the book, it's it doesn't
- 10:44Speaker 1: play out. It doesn't shake out that way, especially not
- 10:48Speaker 1: for Tad, unfortunately. And that was the real That was
- 10:51Speaker 1: the thing that I'm honestly glad I knew about before
- 10:53Speaker 1: going into it, because that would have been such a
- 10:56Speaker 1: gut punch. Basically, throughout these like two and a half
- 10:59Speaker 1: days that there's Duck at Joe Camber's garage, you basically
- 11:03Speaker 1: just see Donna and Tad being dehydrated in this fucking
- 11:08Speaker 1: car and it's like one hundred degrees outside. Tad's dying
- 11:12Speaker 1: the whole time. He's just a little kid dying in
- 11:15Speaker 1: the backseat of this car of like heat stroke and dehydration,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and it's just it's incredibly sad. I don't know what
- 11:22Speaker 1: else to say about that whole situation right there. But
- 11:25Speaker 1: then I'm skipping over so much stuff, but I'm just
- 11:27Speaker 1: talking about the end here. But then when you get
- 11:29Speaker 1: to the point where Donna actually does something, she goes
- 11:33Speaker 1: out and she gets the bat and she does eventually
- 11:36Speaker 1: battle Kujo and fucking beat him to death. It's like
- 11:39Speaker 1: so many other things have happened at this point. Two
- 11:41Speaker 1: and a half days have gone by. At this point,
- 11:43Speaker 1: they only brought like a thermos of milk and like
- 11:46Speaker 1: some snacks, you know, because they were just like, we're
- 11:49Speaker 1: going on this trip to drop off the car or whatever.
- 11:51Speaker 1: We don't know how long it's gonna take for him
- 11:53Speaker 1: to fix the car, but probably be like a you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: less than a day or something, might be like an afternoon.
- 11:58Speaker 1: So they didn't really play. According Lamb, it's kind of
- 12:01Speaker 1: one of those things nowadays where I feel like everyone recommends, like,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know, have a case of water in your car just.
- 12:06Speaker 2: In case something happens.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Which you know, honestly, if they just had that they
- 12:10Speaker 1: probably would have survived, which is crazy to think about.
- 12:13Speaker 1: At least Tad would have survived. I guess Donna does survive.
- 12:16Speaker 1: It's almost like a Texas chainsaw Masker situation that where
- 12:19Speaker 1: it's like who will survive and what will be left
- 12:21Speaker 1: to them? Because by the end of it, it's like
- 12:23Speaker 1: Donna's gotta be fucking She's completely like unglued. By the
- 12:28Speaker 1: end of it, she's fucking killing Kujo Vic pulls up
- 12:32Speaker 1: and he's just like, whoa, whoa, whoa, what's going on here?
- 12:35Speaker 1: You know, you fucking you're fucking bludgeoning a Saint Bernard
- 12:38Speaker 1: with a baseball ben shit and uh and he pulls
- 12:41Speaker 1: Tad out of the car and brings him over to
- 12:44Speaker 1: the shade and he's just like, you know, lays him down,
- 12:48Speaker 1: and Donna is like, what the fuck?
- 12:50Speaker 2: What the fuck happened?
- 12:52Speaker 1: And then she's like, oh, yeah, I don't even remember
- 12:55Speaker 1: what she says, but she says something to him about
- 12:57Speaker 1: Tad and he just goes, how long has he been?
- 13:00Speaker 1: It's just well, that's how you find out that Tad died,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and you're just like, fuck me, fuck me, because up
- 13:08Speaker 1: until then he's like having convulsions you know, he's like
- 13:11Speaker 1: having these weird dreams about being in a duck pond,
- 13:15Speaker 1: which you kind of imagine is him like seeing the light,
- 13:19Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like when someone's dying and
- 13:21Speaker 1: they're seeing the light, or they're like on their way
- 13:24Speaker 1: to Heven. Basically, it's kind of the idea that you get,
- 13:28Speaker 1: Like Tad's in between right now. He's basically dying slowly
- 13:33Speaker 1: in this car, and he's having these visions of going
- 13:35Speaker 1: to this like peaceful duck pond, which is death for him,
- 13:39Speaker 1: but he's when he's there, he's way happier. And there's
- 13:42Speaker 1: times when he's like in the car and he's like
- 13:44Speaker 1: I want to go back to the duck pond, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: it's just like my god, you gotta be fucking kidding me.
- 13:50Speaker 1: It's just a heartbreaking, honestly. And so that's how you
- 13:56Speaker 1: find out that Tad dies, and then the paramedics show
- 13:59Speaker 1: up and everything. Donna is like biting the paramedics, like
- 14:03Speaker 1: trying to fight them to keep resuscitating Tad. She's like
- 14:07Speaker 1: blowing air into as long as the whole time to
- 14:09Speaker 1: try to bring him back, and it just the book
- 14:11Speaker 1: the whole time is just like and he's still dead
- 14:14Speaker 1: and it's just like fuck. So anyway, that's a big
- 14:17Speaker 1: enough gut punch.
- 14:18Speaker 2: For the book. Then you got like all the.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Drama that's going on with Vic, and then before all that,
- 14:23Speaker 1: in the very beginning, like I said, you get Kujo's
- 14:26Speaker 1: origin story, like his villain arc, where it's just like
- 14:30Speaker 1: he's the sweetest dog. He just happens to chase after
- 14:34Speaker 1: a rabbit and when he gets when he finally catches
- 14:37Speaker 1: up to the rabbit, it runs into this little cave
- 14:39Speaker 1: and he sticks his big gass head in there trying
- 14:41Speaker 1: to get the rabbit, but he can't get it. So
- 14:43Speaker 1: he's kind of just like barking at the rabbit and
- 14:45Speaker 1: shit stirs up these bats. The bats come down and
- 14:48Speaker 1: fucking bite him, and guess what, the bats have rabies.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So from then on you just kind of get like
- 14:53Speaker 1: Kujo pov every once in a while where it just
- 14:55Speaker 1: talks about like how he's changing and how he's like
- 14:59Speaker 1: becoming more like filled with rage and everything he sees
- 15:02Speaker 1: is causing him pain. Everybody that he sees throughout the
- 15:06Speaker 1: book he assumes like this is the person that's causing
- 15:09Speaker 1: me all this pain, and that's why he goes and
- 15:11Speaker 1: tries to kill him, but he I think Kujo kills
- 15:14Speaker 1: four people or four people die because of him. The
- 15:17Speaker 1: first person he kills is Joe Camber's friend, which is
- 15:20Speaker 1: this Gary Pervier guy who Joe and Gary are getting
- 15:23Speaker 1: ready to go on a trip to Boston together, and
- 15:27Speaker 1: they're just like, yeah, we're gonna my wife's going to
- 15:29Speaker 1: a fucking visitor's sister with my son, and we're gonna
- 15:33Speaker 1: go to Boston, watch some baseball games and bang some hoes. Basically,
- 15:37Speaker 1: it's like their whole plan. But Kujo fucking puts a
- 15:41Speaker 1: little kink in that plan because he shows up to
- 15:43Speaker 1: Gary's house all fucking whacked out on rabies, and Gary's like,
- 15:46Speaker 1: what's up, Kujo, motherfucker? And he just eats Gary's neck
- 15:50Speaker 1: pretty much is what happens. And it's like, all right, well,
- 15:53Speaker 1: Gary's dead, and then Joe is getting ready to leave
- 15:56Speaker 1: and he's just like, sup, Joe, I'm gonna eat your
- 15:59Speaker 1: fucking neck too. No, Joe goes to Gary's house and
- 16:01Speaker 1: he finds like the mess and he's just like, holy shit,
- 16:04Speaker 1: what the fuck happened here? And he knows it's Kujo
- 16:07Speaker 1: before he even sees Kujo because he sees a giant
- 16:10Speaker 1: pile of dog shit in his garage and he's just like, damn,
- 16:13Speaker 1: what the fuck, Like, Kujo never shits in the garage,
- 16:15Speaker 1: as motherfucker. And then when he goes to Gary's house
- 16:18Speaker 1: and finds him dead, he also sees a giant pile
- 16:21Speaker 1: of dog shit laying in the house and he's just like,
- 16:23Speaker 1: oh no, well that's my dog shit. That's not gonna
- 16:26Speaker 1: be good. I got a big ass dog and he's
- 16:29Speaker 1: laying some big ass logs.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Oh no, you fucking bite me A bite my dad.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Oh sorry. Anyway, back to the story.
- 16:46Speaker 1: So, like I was saying, basically, the overall theme is
- 16:49Speaker 1: just like lack of communication and putting things off, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: that's just kind of what triggers everything. Even, like I said,
- 16:55Speaker 1: with the stuff with Donna and waiting till the last
- 16:58Speaker 1: minute to get the bat, I mean, they kind of
- 17:01Speaker 1: go over all the what ifs with that, where they're like, well,
- 17:04Speaker 1: what if she went for the bat earlier but Kujo
- 17:06Speaker 1: was too strong and she was overpowered and stuff like that.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But at the same time, she's probably been weakened so
- 17:13Speaker 1: bad at that point from not having any food or
- 17:15Speaker 1: water either. I was trying not to judge Donna too
- 17:18Speaker 1: harshly throughout this whole thing.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It was kind of tough because you're just like, She's like,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I don't know, I could make a run for the door,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but I guess I'll just wait in the car for
- 17:26Speaker 1: two and a half days. And it's like, God, damn,
- 17:29Speaker 1: that's a choice. That is a choice there, Donna, two
- 17:32Speaker 1: and a half days. You don't think there was like
- 17:35Speaker 1: ever a moment where you're like, I might be able
- 17:37Speaker 1: to outrun this motherfucker.
- 17:38Speaker 2: And I get it.
- 17:39Speaker 1: It's a big as dog and it probably would have
- 17:41Speaker 1: fucking killed her. But at the same time, other than
- 17:43Speaker 1: her being alive, the end result would have been the same,
- 17:46Speaker 1: which I know you can't see that. It's it's like
- 17:48Speaker 1: hindsight's twenty twenty. But at the same time, it's like,
- 17:51Speaker 1: I think there's even like another vehicle there. I think, yeah,
- 17:54Speaker 1: she says, Joe Camber's trucks there. So it's kind of
- 17:56Speaker 1: like one of those things too, where it's like, maybe
- 17:59Speaker 1: you could run over to, oh, Camber's truck and see
- 18:01Speaker 1: if he's got any shit in there. Also, didn't you
- 18:03Speaker 1: think they would have like a tire iron in the back,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and I guess you know, it's one of those things
- 18:08Speaker 1: where it's like bust out the tire iron and do
- 18:10Speaker 1: one of those moves that you do in video games
- 18:12Speaker 1: when you're fighting like an overpowered boss, where you like
- 18:15Speaker 1: hide and then you jump out for a second, hit
- 18:17Speaker 1: him like one time, and then you go hide again.
- 18:19Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. It's like if she had
- 18:21Speaker 1: that tire iron and she just like whipped out there
- 18:23Speaker 1: fucking crack kujo like writing the dome with it and
- 18:26Speaker 1: then jump back in the car and shit and just
- 18:28Speaker 1: like waited again for a while. Probably could have done
- 18:31Speaker 1: that in like over a day's time, had his ass killed,
- 18:34Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:36Speaker 1: These are just all the scenarios that were running through
- 18:38Speaker 1: my head as I was getting through this book, and
- 18:40Speaker 1: I was just like, two and a half days is
- 18:42Speaker 1: a long fucking time to just sit in a car
- 18:43Speaker 1: and die from dehydration. But you know, he's Lois Lady
- 18:47Speaker 1: really quickly, I'll just go over the other like family
- 18:50Speaker 1: story that's going on. So basically, Joe Camber is kind
- 18:54Speaker 1: of a piece of shit. He's kind of like a
- 18:56Speaker 1: hic car mechanic guy that just works on cars for
- 18:59Speaker 1: like five dollars a pop. Because he's just like a
- 19:02Speaker 1: little towny type of guy, you know what I mean.
- 19:04Speaker 1: He's married to Charity Camber. Their son's Brett Camber, like
- 19:08Speaker 1: I said, and he's just kind of like a huge
- 19:10Speaker 1: dick to his wife. And she wins a little bit
- 19:13Speaker 1: of money through the lottery, like five thousand bucks or whatever,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and she buys him like a piece of equipment that
- 19:17Speaker 1: he's been needing, and she's basically like, listen, I got
- 19:20Speaker 1: this money. I'll give you all the fucking money. I
- 19:23Speaker 1: just want to go on a trip with our son
- 19:25Speaker 1: to visit my sister. And she's kind of just trying
- 19:28Speaker 1: to expose Brett to some more culture, some other ways
- 19:33Speaker 1: of life, because she's afraid that he's going to get
- 19:35Speaker 1: sucked into Joe's way of life, where he's just kind
- 19:38Speaker 1: of like this drunk guy that doesn't ever do shit,
- 19:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean, And she can kind of
- 19:44Speaker 1: see how he's falling into his father's footsteps.
- 19:47Speaker 2: So they go off.
- 19:48Speaker 1: The whole time they're visiting Charity's sister. I can't even
- 19:51Speaker 1: remember where the fuck they go, but basically like her
- 19:53Speaker 1: sister's husband's a lawyer, they have a lot more money
- 19:56Speaker 1: than they do and stuff like that. So you kind
- 19:59Speaker 1: of cut back and forth with them and see like
- 20:01Speaker 1: how their vacation is going on during this whole episode
- 20:05Speaker 1: with Kujo and the rabies and stuff like that. And
- 20:08Speaker 1: it's interesting because there's some moments with Brett and this
- 20:11Speaker 1: will probably bring us into our next uh, our next
- 20:16Speaker 1: topic here about the book where it's like, is there
- 20:19Speaker 1: anything supernatural going on? Because there's some moments where like
- 20:22Speaker 1: Brett's sleep walking while they're on their trip and he's
- 20:25Speaker 1: just like talking out loud about Kujo and he's just like,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Kujo's not hungry anymore. And Charity's like, what the fuck
- 20:32Speaker 1: does that mean? Like, you're just scaring the fuck out
- 20:34Speaker 1: of me, Bud, And he kind of tells his mom like, yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 1: before we left, I saw Kujo and he looks sick.
- 20:40Speaker 1: And the mom's basically like, do not tell your fucking
- 20:42Speaker 1: dad that, or he's not gonna let us go on
- 20:44Speaker 1: this trip. So he's kind of worried about Kujo the
- 20:47Speaker 1: whole time that they're on the trip. He's like, maybe
- 20:50Speaker 1: maybe Kujo's sick or maybe he needs help or something,
- 20:52Speaker 1: but the mom's just like, shut the fuck up about Kujo, Bud,
- 20:55Speaker 1: we need to go on this damn trip. Your dad's
- 20:57Speaker 1: been whipping my ass all the time. I got to
- 20:59Speaker 1: get away from it, motherfucker. That's kind of their whole
- 21:01Speaker 1: story summed up, basically. Some of the other like potentially
- 21:06Speaker 1: supernatural moments in the book. There's like the whole thing
- 21:08Speaker 1: with Tad's closet. Tad's afraid of what's in his closet.
- 21:11Speaker 1: It seems to just open on its own, and he
- 21:13Speaker 1: imagines that there's like a scary monster in there and shit.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And when he sees Kujo with the rabies and the
- 21:19Speaker 1: foam in the mouth and the blood all over his
- 21:21Speaker 1: fur and shit, he's like that that's the monster from
- 21:23Speaker 1: my closet.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Holy fuck.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And it even talks about the moment at the end
- 21:27Speaker 1: where Donna is Fightingkujo to the death. He says, holy,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you know, like, holy shit, I'm watching my mom get
- 21:35Speaker 1: killed by the monster from my closet. There's that whole thing,
- 21:39Speaker 1: and that ties into the book The Dead Zone with
- 21:43Speaker 1: the with the Frank Dodd character from the book The
- 21:46Speaker 1: Dead Zone, which I actually just I just got the
- 21:49Speaker 1: Dead Zone. I'm gonna read that one next. I think
- 21:52Speaker 1: just have to after Readingkujo and Needful Things. It's just
- 21:56Speaker 1: brought me on this journey of these three books, which
- 21:59Speaker 1: is really great. I like how these Stephen King books
- 22:03Speaker 1: usually tie in together. It's probably one of my favorite
- 22:06Speaker 1: things about them so far that I didn't expect. I
- 22:08Speaker 1: really didn't know that there was this whole Stephen King universe.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I had mostly just watched the movies before this. The
- 22:16Speaker 1: only Stephen kingbook I read before this was The Dark Half.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I read that one in high school, and that's interesting.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to reread it because that one also
- 22:25Speaker 1: ties into Needful Things too, so pretty cool. So yeah,
- 22:28Speaker 1: we got this Frank Dodd guy who was a serial
- 22:31Speaker 1: killer in Castle Rock during the seventies, and basically it's
- 22:35Speaker 1: just kind of attached to the town. This whole thing
- 22:38Speaker 1: that happened. I think it just happened like a few
- 22:40Speaker 1: years before Kujo, so the town is still like feeling
- 22:43Speaker 1: the effects of it, and you see the cops in
- 22:45Speaker 1: town like mention it a lot. People kind of refer
- 22:48Speaker 1: to him as the Boogeyman. So there's almost this thought
- 22:51Speaker 1: that like has Frank Dodd's spirit infected the town or
- 22:55Speaker 1: possessed Kujo in a way, although it is just the rabies,
- 22:58Speaker 1: that is something where it's like, to me, this whole
- 23:01Speaker 1: story feels very grounded in reality. I don't think there's
- 23:04Speaker 1: like really anything supernatural going on in this book other
- 23:09Speaker 1: than I do think that Tad has a little bit
- 23:12Speaker 1: of the shining as well as maybe Brett, because he
- 23:15Speaker 1: seems to just have these like this intuition about things
- 23:18Speaker 1: going on, and it is kind of one of those
- 23:20Speaker 1: things where it's like typically kids in Stephen King books
- 23:23Speaker 1: do seem to shine a little bit. There's also adults
- 23:26Speaker 1: and stuff like that too, but it's almost like the
- 23:28Speaker 1: idea that like kids are more kids are more in
- 23:31Speaker 1: touch with like the supernatural or whatever. So I do
- 23:35Speaker 1: think that Tad shines a little bit in this book
- 23:38Speaker 1: because he seems to kind of he sees things way
- 23:41Speaker 1: before they even happen. He has a dream about the
- 23:44Speaker 1: bat breaking, which is something that happens while Donna is
- 23:47Speaker 1: fighting Kujo at the very end, but like early on
- 23:50Speaker 1: in the book, he has this dream about the monster
- 23:52Speaker 1: in his closet and the red eyes and stuff like that,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and almost like a premonition of death. I can't remember
- 23:58Speaker 1: exactly what it is, but there's something pretty early on
- 24:01Speaker 1: in the book that this kid has some sort of
- 24:04Speaker 1: idea that something like ominous is going to happen. When
- 24:07Speaker 1: you're talking to a little kid about this type of thing,
- 24:10Speaker 1: you know, a lot of times it's just going to
- 24:11Speaker 1: seem like their imagination. They're scared of their closet and
- 24:16Speaker 1: everything like that. But a lot of the things that
- 24:18Speaker 1: he has dreams about, or kind of sees or has
- 24:22Speaker 1: visions about, or whatever, premonitions, whatever you want to call him,
- 24:25Speaker 1: they do end up kind of coming true in some
- 24:28Speaker 1: way or another. So I do believe that out of
- 24:30Speaker 1: all the characters in this book, Tad shines a little bit.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I think that's pretty much everything that I wanted to
- 24:37Speaker 1: talk about with Kujo the book. Within the next week
- 24:40Speaker 1: or so, I'll do an episode on the movie rewatch
- 24:43Speaker 1: that and kind of give my opinion on the movie
- 24:46Speaker 1: and how it compares to the book, which one I
- 24:49Speaker 1: enjoyed better. One of the only other things that I
- 24:51Speaker 1: didn't really get into, which it's a lot to get into.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I mean, even though this is like one of his
- 24:56Speaker 1: shorter books, I still feel like there's so much that
- 24:59Speaker 1: goes on in it, so many like varying storylines and
- 25:02Speaker 1: timelines that end up matching up really well. I feel
- 25:05Speaker 1: like everything's put together in such a precise way where
- 25:09Speaker 1: it's like all of these series of events affect the
- 25:12Speaker 1: other and it would only end up happening this way
- 25:15Speaker 1: if everything lined up perfectly.
- 25:17Speaker 2: It does feel like a very fatal story. But there's
- 25:20Speaker 2: the whole other, like.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Steve Kemp storyline that's going on here, where it's the
- 25:24Speaker 1: guy that Donna was sleeping with, and he kind of
- 25:28Speaker 1: he throws a wrench into everything that's going on too,
- 25:31Speaker 1: And whenever Vic can't get a hold of Donna, he
- 25:34Speaker 1: calls the police to do a check up. Well, Steve
- 25:37Speaker 1: Kemp stopped by the house and completely trash the fucking
- 25:40Speaker 1: place and like jacks off on their bed and destroys
- 25:44Speaker 1: the kitchen, destroys the living room and stuff like that,
- 25:46Speaker 1: like smashes all their pictures. So the cops think, you know, yet,
- 25:50Speaker 1: somebody fucking burglarized this place. And now these this wife
- 25:54Speaker 1: and son are missing, so they think it's like been
- 25:56Speaker 1: a kidnapping, so they're looking in the completely wrong direction
- 26:00Speaker 1: try to find Donna and Tad whenever all this is
- 26:02Speaker 1: going on. So that is a whole other part of
- 26:05Speaker 1: it that is just like really well done, really well
- 26:07Speaker 1: put together, and I'll just leave it at that. That's
- 26:10Speaker 1: all we're gonna say about the book Kujo. I thought
- 26:13Speaker 1: it was great. I'd give it like a four out
- 26:15Speaker 1: of five if I was gonna rate it. I'm not
- 26:18Speaker 1: very good at writing books. I mostly just I've been
- 26:20Speaker 1: using good Reads to keep track of all the books
- 26:23Speaker 1: that I've been reading lately, and I've pretty much just
- 26:25Speaker 1: given everything a five out of five unless it completely
- 26:28Speaker 1: fucking sucks. So five out of five for Kujo actually
- 26:31Speaker 1: is what I'm going to give it.
