- 0:00He won the French and Spanish Scrabble World Championship
- 0:05without speaking the language. There's a story behind that.
- 0:09This is your daily message from Chad #1194 to upgrade your
- 0:13mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:16Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:18yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:20Nigel Richards. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:24You think the job is to learn the whole shebang.
- 0:27But upgraded thinking knows the job is to learn the game you're
- 0:30playing. Here's the story.
- 0:34Nigel Richards was born in 1967 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
- 0:37He didn't get serious about Scrabble, you know, the board
- 0:40game with the letter tiles, until he was 28, when he joined
- 0:43a club in town In the late 1990s, he wanted to enter the
- 0:47national championship. It was about 220 miles away, so
- 0:50he got on his bike, rode there, won the title and rode home.
- 0:54He has since won the English language world championship five
- 0:57times. That's the record.
- 1:00Then in 2015, he took up a challenge that sounded
- 1:03impossible, winning the French Language World Championship
- 1:08without speaking French. He started studying the official
- 1:11French word list in May 9 weeks later, he sat down in Belgium
- 1:14across from a French speaking player from Gabon, and he won
- 1:18the final two games to none. He didn't learn French.
- 1:23He learned French Scrabble. Which letters make a legal word?
- 1:27Which words fit where on the board?
- 1:29What's left in the bag, where the points are.
- 1:33He never needed to know what a word meant.
- 1:35He needed to know if it was legal, where it fit and what it
- 1:38scored. Everyone else looked at French
- 1:40and saw a language too big to learn.
- 1:42He looked at it and saw a game, and he learned the game.
- 1:47Nine years later, at his first Spanish tournament in Granada,
- 1:51he did it again. 23 wins, one loss, after about a year of
- 1:56study to become the Spanish World Championship.
- 2:00I think there's a lesson you can learn from.
- 2:02Richard's games are simple. There are rules and structure.
- 2:07He saw a game in his own rare public description of a secret.
- 2:11He is disarmingly simple. It's just a matter of learning
- 2:15the words. It starts with keeping things
- 2:18simple. You don't have to understand the
- 2:20whole industry to make the call in front of you.
- 2:23You don't have to master psychology to have tonight's
- 2:26conversation. You have to know the game you're
- 2:29actually in and go deep on that one thing.
- 2:33Legendary Lakers basketball player Kareem Abdul Jabbar once
- 2:37said there's a ball, there's a hoop, you put the ball through
- 2:41the hoop. That's success.
- 2:43He understood greatness starts with simplicity.
- 2:46So stop trying to learn the whole language, find the game
- 2:50and go all in it today. The better story to tell
- 2:54yourself is I don't have to learn everything, I have to
- 2:56learn the game I'm actually playing.
- 3:00Tell me a story of finding the game inside something too big to
- 3:03learn to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:06Send someone a text right now and ask them what's the game
- 3:09you're actually playing right now?
