- 1:29Speaker 1: nineteen fifty one, here is the big setup.
- 1:42Speaker 2: The story you were about to hear is true, only
- 1:45Speaker 2: the names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're
- 1:56Speaker 2: a detective sergeant.
- 1:58Speaker 3: You're assigned to burglary detail.
- 2:00Speaker 4: A gang of.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Clever thieves are at work in your city. In three months,
- 2:04Speaker 2: they've looted fashionable homes of one hundred thousand dollars.
- 2:07Speaker 5: In furs and jewels.
- 2:09Speaker 4: There's no clue to their identity.
- 2:11Speaker 6: Your job get them.
- 2:23Speaker 7: Dragnet the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
- 2:27Speaker 7: next thirty minutes, in cooperation of the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:30Speaker 7: you will travel, step by a step on the side
- 2:32Speaker 7: of the law through an actual case transcribed from official
- 2:35Speaker 7: police by us, from beginning to end, from crime to punishment.
- 2:40Speaker 7: Dragnet is the story of your police force in action.
- 2:46Speaker 8: Was Wednesday, January tenth, was cold in Los Angeles. We're
- 2:50Speaker 8: working the day watch out of burgery detail. My partner's
- 2:53Speaker 8: Ben Romero. The boss is Captain Wisdom. My name's Friday.
- 2:56Speaker 8: It was eleven fifteen am when we got back to
- 2:58Speaker 8: the city Hall Captain Wisdom's office.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Hi, Skipper, Hi, how'd you make eye?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Not too good? Same old story.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Anybody in the house and the thieves broke in?
- 3:08Speaker 8: Yeah. The children's nurse was there. She said the burgery
- 3:10Speaker 8: took place about midnight. She was asleep in bed at
- 3:12Speaker 8: the time. The nurse said she woke up when she
- 3:15Speaker 8: heard the thieves forcing their way in through a side door.
- 3:17Speaker 8: She jumped out of bed, ran for the telephone in
- 3:19Speaker 8: the hallway, and they grabbed her before she could reach it.
- 3:21Speaker 8: Do her any harm, well a little? Yeah, They tied
- 3:23Speaker 8: her up, locked her in a closet.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Same memo as the other job, skipper. Three men each
- 3:27Speaker 3: have the more gloves and a mask. They took all
- 3:29Speaker 3: the furs and jewelry. They could find nothing.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Now, nurse, give you the same general description on the
- 3:33Speaker 5: three of them.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not going to help them. I'd said. Two
- 3:35Speaker 3: of the men were tall, medium bill and one was short,
- 3:37Speaker 3: heavy Bill. She was so rattled she couldn't even remember
- 3:40Speaker 3: the clothes.
- 3:41Speaker 9: Then, or twelve jobs are the same gang in three months?
- 3:43Speaker 9: We don't even have a good description of them. Hows local?
- 3:46Speaker 3: We move doing everything we can give her.
- 3:48Speaker 9: Excuse me for burgary wisdom. Uh huh, not until two o'clock. No,
- 3:53Speaker 9: that's all right, two o'clock sharp, right bye, Just had
- 3:57Speaker 9: an appointment, cancelot. How about a cup of coffee downstairs?
- 4:00Speaker 9: I didn't even have a chance for breakfast this morning?
- 4:01Speaker 8: Final with me?
- 4:02Speaker 3: I mean, grab my hat, I'll get it here you go. Thanks.
- 4:10Speaker 9: I guess you talked to the owners of the house
- 4:12Speaker 9: on the place was broken into last night.
- 4:13Speaker 8: Yeah, we did mister and Ms Peterson. They got home
- 4:16Speaker 8: a couple hours after the burglary, took a quick inventory
- 4:19Speaker 8: where they find missing furs and jewels, same as the
- 4:21Speaker 8: other jobs, almost twelve thousand dollars worth. It's the biggest
- 4:24Speaker 8: fall yet.
- 4:25Speaker 5: I don't have to spell it out for you. We
- 4:27Speaker 5: need a break on this thing.
- 4:27Speaker 3: We need a bad more pressure from the front office.
- 4:30Speaker 9: Well coming from all sides. The victims are insurance companies, newspapers.
- 4:33Speaker 9: They got a right to cry. Those thieves have.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Been grabbing furs and jewels for three months.
- 4:37Speaker 3: We're doing everything about it we can. New is Gibber planning, steakhouts,
- 4:40Speaker 3: working our informants, running down every lead we can get
- 4:42Speaker 3: our hands on, covered every angle. I thank god.
- 4:45Speaker 5: They don't worry about the angles we cover. They want results.
- 4:47Speaker 5: They want their property back and go ahead, Gibber. Yeah. Now,
- 4:52Speaker 5: how about the stuff they took on the job last night?
- 4:54Speaker 5: You get it on the stolen property list?
- 4:56Speaker 8: Yeah, it's all listed. That's one thing that really gets me.
- 5:00Speaker 8: What are the thieves doing with all that stuff, the
- 5:02Speaker 8: furs and the jewelry. We've had every pawn shop in
- 5:04Speaker 8: the city on the alert since they started working. Checked
- 5:06Speaker 8: on every possible outlet we know of any place they
- 5:08Speaker 8: could use to dump this stuff. They haven't turned up
- 5:10Speaker 8: a trace of it.
- 5:11Speaker 5: No results in those apbs you got.
- 5:12Speaker 8: Out, Well, yeah, a few, but none of them. Am
- 5:14Speaker 8: panning out.
- 5:15Speaker 3: How about trying the cafeteria here, they got pretty good coffee.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Oh good idea.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Why don't you too, grab a table, I'll get the coffee.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Right then, Oh, hold the cream on mind? Will you
- 5:27Speaker 5: ride skim?
- 5:29Speaker 8: How's this is all right? Yeah?
- 5:31Speaker 4: Fine?
- 5:31Speaker 5: Tree chairs?
- 5:32Speaker 9: Yeah, okay, how about it, Friday, You or Ben got
- 5:37Speaker 9: any ideas at all?
- 5:38Speaker 8: Well, there's one thing we wanted to talk over with you.
- 5:40Speaker 8: We were kicking the idea around on the way back
- 5:41Speaker 8: into the office. It's like a smoke.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Oh thanks, there you go.
- 5:48Speaker 8: Last night we were comparing the different stories we got
- 5:50Speaker 8: from the burgery victims.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Yeah, life, thank you you a letter? Yeah, it's all right,
- 6:00Speaker 5: go ahead.
- 6:01Speaker 8: Well that's one thing that all their stories seemed to
- 6:03Speaker 8: happen in common. Now that's counting all twelve victims.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Yeah, what's that.
- 6:07Speaker 8: Let's see, I got a piece of paper here, I
- 6:08Speaker 8: got it all figured out. Yeah, we know all the
- 6:12Speaker 8: victims are fairly wealthy people. They go out quite a
- 6:14Speaker 8: bit parties, nightclubs, things like that.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Yeah, none of them were at home at the time
- 6:18Speaker 5: the burglaries.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You pull up, that's right, Yeah, here you go. There's
- 6:22Speaker 3: your skipper, Joe, Thank you very much.
- 6:25Speaker 8: I'm just telling you Captain about that idea we were
- 6:27Speaker 8: talking about on the way back in.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, so none of the victims were home
- 6:31Speaker 5: at the time of the burglary. Where does it go
- 6:32Speaker 5: from there?
- 6:33Speaker 8: Well, for one thing, we all pretty much agree that
- 6:35Speaker 8: there must be a fingerman working with a gang, don't we.
- 6:38Speaker 8: Somebody who knows the victims aren't home. Somebody who also
- 6:40Speaker 8: knows the victims aren't wearing the furs or jewels on
- 6:42Speaker 8: that particular Night's right, right.
- 6:44Speaker 5: We've been going on that assumption. The question is who's
- 6:46Speaker 5: the fingerman.
- 6:47Speaker 8: Well, that's what I'm trying to get at here. Ben
- 6:49Speaker 8: and I compared the victims' stories. We found out that
- 6:52Speaker 8: in every case, each of the victims had been out
- 6:54Speaker 8: in some public place from three to five days before
- 6:57Speaker 8: the night of the burglary. Now, at that time, every
- 6:59Speaker 8: one of them wore furs and expensive jewelry.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yeah, why don't you read off some of those examples
- 7:03Speaker 3: we got there Joe.
- 7:04Speaker 8: Okay, well, here's the first one. Mister and missus Charles King. Now,
- 7:09Speaker 8: on December tenth, they went to a nightclub out in Hollywood.
- 7:12Speaker 8: Missus King wore a fur coat and quite a bit
- 7:15Speaker 8: of jewelry. On December fourteenth, they went out to a theater.
- 7:18Speaker 8: They didn't dress up at all. They left the furs
- 7:20Speaker 8: and jewels at home. That's the night that their house
- 7:22Speaker 8: was burgerized.
- 7:22Speaker 5: And the same pattern shows up in every one of
- 7:24Speaker 5: the victim's stories.
- 7:25Speaker 8: No, no, it's not quite that close, but the same
- 7:27Speaker 8: elements seem to be there.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Here's another one, Skipper. Let's see mister and missus Lyons.
- 7:32Speaker 3: November twentieth, they went to a big party to restaurant
- 7:35Speaker 3: out on sunset. Woman wore jewelry expensive for a wrap.
- 7:38Speaker 3: A week later, they went to a party to friend's house.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Missus Lyons left their first and jewelry at home. The
- 7:42Speaker 3: same night thieves broke in.
- 7:44Speaker 4: That's a pretty good angle.
- 7:46Speaker 5: How do you tie up all the loose ends?
- 7:47Speaker 8: Well, I see a paper again, Ben, We got it
- 7:49Speaker 8: half way figured right here. Just before each of the
- 7:52Speaker 8: victims was taken, they appeared in the public place wearing
- 7:55Speaker 8: the furs and jewelry. We've got a list of all
- 7:57Speaker 8: the places nightclubs, restaurants. There's about six of them here.
- 8:00Speaker 5: So the fingerman for the gag must be watching these
- 8:02Speaker 5: six places.
- 8:02Speaker 3: He spots the people with expensive firs and jewelry, tips
- 8:05Speaker 3: off the gang. They watch the house next time the
- 8:07Speaker 3: people go out, and the thiefs see the woman isn't
- 8:09Speaker 3: wearing her furs and things, and they move in.
- 8:11Speaker 8: It's not a sure thing. We're just guessing you in
- 8:13Speaker 8: this tent. We think it sounds like a fair guest.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Let's move on.
- 8:17Speaker 3: We'll have to cover each of those nightclubs and the restaurants.
- 8:20Speaker 3: We're going to take more men, more time. Could be
- 8:23Speaker 3: nothing but a blind alley.
- 8:24Speaker 4: We got the men, we got the time.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Let's try it.
- 8:28Speaker 8: Ten pm, Wednesday, January tenth. Our idea for stopping the
- 8:32Speaker 8: burglary gang by reaching their spot or fingerman was put
- 8:35Speaker 8: into operation. The half dozen nightclubs and restaurants where we
- 8:39Speaker 8: thought the spotter might be checking off richly dressed couples
- 8:42Speaker 8: as future burglary victims were placed under strict surveillance. Managers
- 8:46Speaker 8: and employees of each of the places were questioned. It
- 8:49Speaker 8: went slow. The first week got us four leads to
- 8:52Speaker 8: check out. They let nowhere. Any and all suspicious looking
- 8:55Speaker 8: persons loitering in or near the clubs and restaurants that
- 8:58Speaker 8: we had staked out were questioned and checked out thoroughly.
- 9:01Speaker 8: Another week passed no results in the meantime. On January
- 9:05Speaker 8: twenty third, the burglary gang hit again, this time at
- 9:08Speaker 8: a dentist's home in the Hollywood Hills. The maid, a
- 9:11Speaker 8: Missilsea Bergstrom, was the only one present at the time
- 9:13Speaker 8: of the burglary. Ben and I drove out the interviewer.
- 9:16Speaker 10: It was soon before midnight. The mister and missus was
- 9:19Speaker 10: gone out evasitting the television.
- 9:21Speaker 3: The three men broke in the side doors. That'd right,
- 9:23Speaker 3: Miss Brooks, ye had the side door, I think.
- 9:25Speaker 11: So.
- 9:26Speaker 12: I was sitting at the television boxing. I hear this sound.
- 9:29Speaker 12: I turn around and the three men they're right there
- 9:31Speaker 12: in the room with me. I thought I could scream,
- 9:34Speaker 12: but I couldn't.
- 9:34Speaker 8: Or do you remember what the men looked like, Miss Bergstrom,
- 9:36Speaker 8: how they were dressed.
- 9:37Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 9:38Speaker 12: I was so much being frightened.
- 9:40Speaker 10: One of them had a jacket on, I think dark jacket.
- 9:44Speaker 10: The others I don't know.
- 9:45Speaker 8: Anything else about them that you noticed it.
- 9:47Speaker 10: They had mass all over their faces. I couldn't see.
- 9:51Speaker 11: I jumped up.
- 9:52Speaker 12: I tried to scream, but that was so much frightened.
- 9:55Speaker 3: What did they do then, miss, Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 10: They put the cloth all around my mouth so I
- 9:58Speaker 10: couldn't make noise. Then I tied my hands and my
- 10:01Speaker 10: feet and they put me in the closet down there,
- 10:04Speaker 10: you smiled the hollway. I was kicking and hitting at them.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Had you ever seen any of the men before?
- 10:10Speaker 4: No?
- 10:10Speaker 12: Never before.
- 10:11Speaker 8: Do you think you'd know any of the men if
- 10:12Speaker 8: you saw them again.
- 10:14Speaker 11: I shouldn't be sure.
- 10:15Speaker 12: One of them, maybe I might know him his way,
- 10:19Speaker 12: only it was very quick.
- 10:21Speaker 10: Then I was putting me in the closet. I was
- 10:22Speaker 10: hitting and kicking at them. One of the men, I
- 10:25Speaker 10: knocked his hat off. It fell on the floor. I
- 10:27Speaker 10: pulled at the thing on his face, the mask almost
- 10:30Speaker 10: it came off.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Well from what you could see, what did the man
- 10:33Speaker 3: look like?
- 10:34Speaker 12: Blonde hair?
- 10:34Speaker 10: I can remember, there's not so much on top here,
- 10:38Speaker 10: it's only on the side here, and there was right
- 10:43Speaker 10: there by the forehead hair a scar going over that way.
- 10:48Speaker 8: Yeah. Was he a big man, you know, as big
- 10:50Speaker 8: as the.
- 10:50Speaker 12: Other he has a smaller man.
- 10:52Speaker 10: He was bigger this way, you know, feather. Yeah, he
- 10:56Speaker 10: was so mad and I knocked his hair off. I
- 10:58Speaker 10: thought maybe he'd kill me, only put me in the closet,
- 11:01Speaker 10: you know. And then they closed the door. I could
- 11:03Speaker 10: hear them upstairs going through.
- 11:04Speaker 11: The mister and missus Ruth.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And you're pretty sure the description you've given us, miss Worth.
- 11:08Speaker 10: She had the scar, the blonde hair, not so much
- 11:10Speaker 10: on top. I remember that it was well. I was
- 11:13Speaker 10: so much frightened.
- 11:14Speaker 11: I thought they'd.
- 11:14Speaker 8: Killed me after they liked you in the closet. They
- 11:17Speaker 8: didn't come back. That's the last you saw them.
- 11:19Speaker 10: Yeah, they didn't come back to me. I could hear
- 11:21Speaker 10: the moon round upstairs, and then I could hear them
- 11:23Speaker 10: leave after a while, like all night for the mister
- 11:26Speaker 10: and missus came home and found me. It was so
- 11:29Speaker 10: much frightened. This thing wouldn't happen in Sweden. That's where
- 11:31Speaker 10: I come from, Sweden.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, you sure there's nothing else about these minute
- 11:36Speaker 3: You've noticed something we ought to know about.
- 11:37Speaker 10: You know, everything I saw, Yes, I I hadden, I
- 11:40Speaker 10: told you the way it was, this never would have
- 11:42Speaker 10: happened in Sweden, not like this, these robbers like this
- 11:45Speaker 10: burglars man. Yeah, these burglars, I thought I'd be dead.
- 11:49Speaker 10: Never would happen in Sweden like this.
- 11:51Speaker 3: You don't have burglars.
- 11:53Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, we had burglars.
- 11:55Speaker 8: Well just how do you mean he had burglars?
- 11:57Speaker 10: But I don't break in the house when somebody's there. Yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 10: they they'd tell everybous going from the house. Then they
- 12:04Speaker 10: break it, even burglar, said the angleman. A little bit.
- 12:10Speaker 8: Before we left the house, we checked with the owners,
- 12:13Speaker 8: took their crime report and a list of their stolen property,
- 12:15Speaker 8: some six thousand dollars in jewelry and fur coats. The
- 12:19Speaker 8: maid's description of one of the three men in the
- 12:21Speaker 8: gang wasn't complete, but it was the best that we'd
- 12:23Speaker 8: had on him in three months. Frank Cunningham and the
- 12:26Speaker 8: Eye Bureau had the description of the scar on the
- 12:28Speaker 8: suspect's forard checked through the oddity file. Meantime, Ben and
- 12:31Speaker 8: I paired up the additional facts about the suspect, the scar,
- 12:34Speaker 8: the color and condition of his hair, along with his
- 12:37Speaker 8: general description is approximate weight and height. We had the
- 12:41Speaker 8: Stat's office make a run for us and all ex
- 12:43Speaker 8: cons with burglary records who fitted the overall description. They
- 12:47Speaker 8: came up with a list of ten names and we
- 12:49Speaker 8: started checking them out. One of the first listed was
- 12:52Speaker 8: a Russell Snow. We checked his last known address, but
- 12:54Speaker 8: he'd moved. His mail was being forwarded in care of
- 12:57Speaker 8: his brother, George Snow, who managed the Neptune Plunge, a
- 13:01Speaker 8: public indoor swimming pool in the East Hollywood neighborhood. We
- 13:04Speaker 8: drove out the interview of the brother.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Pretty good size for an indoor pool. Huh, yeah it is.
- 13:11Speaker 8: It's a nice layout.
- 13:12Speaker 3: They got, must be the office way ahead, Dan, Thanks, Joe, Jot.
- 13:18Speaker 8: What's that that girl over there? Look at that baby
- 13:20Speaker 8: and so that she's got a real They keep getting smaller,
- 13:23Speaker 8: don't They.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Makes you embarrass just to look at him? Yeah, maybe
- 13:26Speaker 3: I'm just getting old. Yes, sir, we're looking for George Snow.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm here.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Police officers met the Snow. Like talk to you a
- 13:38Speaker 3: few minutes if we could.
- 13:39Speaker 13: Oh yeah, let me grab a towel over and get
- 13:42Speaker 13: right off though, for sure, come on over, pull up
- 13:45Speaker 13: one of these deck chairs here.
- 13:46Speaker 3: All right, thank you very much.
- 13:49Speaker 8: Well, what is it, officers?
- 13:52Speaker 4: What can I do for you?
- 13:53Speaker 8: You have a brother, Is that right, sir or Russell Snow.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Russ is my brother.
- 14:00Speaker 8: You know, we'd like to locate him if we could.
- 14:02Speaker 8: Do you know where we can find him?
- 14:03Speaker 3: No, I don't think I can.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Last I heard from Russ was about six months ago.
- 14:08Speaker 5: He said he was going to take a job in Minneapolis.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Not in trouble again, is he not?
- 14:12Speaker 3: That we know? I would like to locate him, man, So.
- 14:15Speaker 4: I don't think I can help you much. Russ is
- 14:17Speaker 4: much of a letter writer.
- 14:19Speaker 5: Only time I hear from when he's in town.
- 14:21Speaker 4: We've checked.
- 14:21Speaker 8: At the last place your brother was staying, he told
- 14:24Speaker 8: us he left word to forward all his mail here
- 14:26Speaker 8: to you.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Is that right? Yeah, that's right. Russ asked me to
- 14:28Speaker 4: take care of it. No letters have come through so far, though.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Were you to hang onto his mail or send it
- 14:34Speaker 8: on to him in Minneapolis?
- 14:35Speaker 4: Now, I was going to hang on to him.
- 14:37Speaker 13: I said he'd picked up his mail next time he
- 14:39Speaker 13: was through. Did I say that was six months ago?
- 14:41Speaker 13: I haven't seen or heard from him since then.
- 14:43Speaker 3: You wouldn't know if he was actually in Minneapolis or nothing.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Well, no, I wouldn't. Yes, you know, my brother Russell
- 14:49Speaker 4: had a police record. Yes, there we do.
- 14:51Speaker 13: Yeah, the trouble a couple of years ago that burglary wrapped.
- 14:55Speaker 13: I think Russe learned his lesson.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Are you your brother's only living relative? I mean, is
- 14:59Speaker 3: there anyone else in town who might have heard from him?
- 15:01Speaker 4: No?
- 15:01Speaker 13: I don't know, olser, excuse me just a minute, all right, kids,
- 15:04Speaker 13: No running around the side of the pool.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You here he slip and break your neck.
- 15:08Speaker 3: No more running.
- 15:09Speaker 13: Sorry, you gotta watch him like the hawk. Yes, like
- 15:12Speaker 13: I was saying, I can't think of anybody who might
- 15:14Speaker 13: have heard from Russ. I'm his only relation. But he
- 15:17Speaker 13: does have a few friends around time. I mean legitimate
- 15:19Speaker 13: fellas you know. Yeah, he'd come around.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Once in a while, drop and say.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Hello, Have any of them heard from your brother?
- 15:25Speaker 13: He might have, but I didn't ask him. Jo Matt Garson,
- 15:28Speaker 13: he's a good friend of my brothers. He was in
- 15:30Speaker 13: the other day, but he didn't say anything about hearing
- 15:31Speaker 13: from Russ. Might be that he has, Maybe he didn't
- 15:35Speaker 13: think to mention it.
- 15:37Speaker 8: Where does this Matt Garson state?
- 15:38Speaker 4: You know, I really couldn't tell you, Officer.
- 15:41Speaker 13: That's a real character, kind of a fluater doesn't stay
- 15:44Speaker 13: with one job more than two months, like last week
- 15:46Speaker 13: when he was in here. He's a real pitchman. Give
- 15:49Speaker 13: me a big sales talk, biggest boggain on earth. Said
- 15:52Speaker 13: he'd tell me a couple of them, real cheap.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I didn't have any use fun. What's that for a coach?
- 15:58Speaker 8: Before we left, Snow gave us a complete description of
- 16:01Speaker 8: Matt Garson, together with the names of five of Garson's
- 16:04Speaker 8: acquaintances who might know of his whereabouts. When Ben and
- 16:07Speaker 8: I got back to the city Hall, we checked Garson's
- 16:09Speaker 8: name and description through R and I. He had a
- 16:12Speaker 8: record of two fairly recent arrests, but no convictions. Both
- 16:16Speaker 8: arrests were for suspicion of burglary. We checked on Garson's
- 16:19Speaker 8: last known residence. He'd moved no forwarding address. His last
- 16:24Speaker 8: place of employment was listed as the Parktivoli nightclub out
- 16:27Speaker 8: on Wiltshire Boulevard. The Park Tivoli was one of the
- 16:29Speaker 8: six places that we'd staked out as a possible working
- 16:32Speaker 8: ground for the burglary gangs. Fingerman a place where he
- 16:35Speaker 8: could spot expensively dressed persons, check on their home addresses
- 16:38Speaker 8: and line them up as future burglary victims. Ben put
- 16:41Speaker 8: in a call to the manager of the park, Tivoli
- 16:43Speaker 8: to check on Garson's employment.
- 16:45Speaker 3: What was that you last July? I see, well, yes
- 16:49Speaker 3: you We'll probably be out tonight, right, thank you boy?
- 16:52Speaker 8: What's again?
- 16:53Speaker 3: Garson worked out there all right? Parking lot a tenant.
- 16:55Speaker 3: He quit lest you lie. He's the guy checking off
- 16:58Speaker 3: the customer's first and jewels. He's in a explod manager
- 17:01Speaker 3: told me that Garden has a girlfriend. She still works
- 17:03Speaker 3: at the club. Might be the answer, Joe, Or how
- 17:06Speaker 3: do you figure she runs a hat set stand.
- 17:18Speaker 7: You are in the communications division of a metropolitan police department.
- 17:21Speaker 7: The teletype room.
- 17:30Speaker 9: Forty three Los five twenty nine fifty one twelve oh
- 17:34Speaker 9: three pm ap B WMA one fifty five six. Dark haired,
- 17:38Speaker 9: dark eyes, wearing gray suit, no hat. Suspect is wearing glasses,
- 17:43Speaker 9: heavy build, twenty two years Suspect is armed with blue
- 17:46Speaker 9: steel revolver. Any information forward.
- 17:49Speaker 7: You have just heard a teletype description of a suspect.
- 17:52Speaker 7: This information will apply to many, but careful screening will
- 17:55Speaker 7: eliminate all but one.
- 18:03Speaker 8: One of the biggest problems that faces a police officer
- 18:06Speaker 8: working the burglary detail is not only apprehending the thief,
- 18:09Speaker 8: but also recovering the stolen property. Dozens of criminals of
- 18:13Speaker 8: this type will spend five, ten or even fifteen years
- 18:16Speaker 8: in prison if they know that on their release they
- 18:18Speaker 8: will have a stake of thousands of dollars in stolen
- 18:21Speaker 8: property which they've hidden somewhere to start over again with.
- 18:25Speaker 8: Thursday January twenty sixth to five pm, we got out
- 18:29Speaker 8: a broadcast and an APB on the burglary suspect Matt Garson.
- 18:33Speaker 8: Then we began checking back on his girlfriend, Virginia Ramsey,
- 18:36Speaker 8: who worked as a hat check girl at the Park
- 18:37Speaker 8: Tivoli nightclub on Wilshire Boulevard. It was one of the
- 18:41Speaker 8: six probable places where we thought that the fingerman for
- 18:43Speaker 8: the burglary gang was lining up potential victims. Despite the
- 18:47Speaker 8: fact that she often associated with known criminal suspects, the
- 18:50Speaker 8: Ramsey girl had no previous criminal record herself. That night,
- 18:54Speaker 8: after she reported in for work at the club, Ben
- 18:57Speaker 8: and I checked her apartment. In one of the closets
- 19:00Speaker 8: we found three expensive fur coats. They were all identified
- 19:03Speaker 8: as property taken in previous burglaries by the gang. In
- 19:06Speaker 8: a strong box in the desk, we found a half
- 19:08Speaker 8: a dozen pieces of expensive jewelry, also identified on the
- 19:11Speaker 8: stolen property list. Ben and I got in the car
- 19:13Speaker 8: and drove to the Park Tavy Nightclub.
- 19:16Speaker 11: Your hat, sir, check your hat?
- 19:18Speaker 3: Your name Virginia Ramsey.
- 19:19Speaker 8: Yes, that's right, police officers. Miss Ramsey, like talk to
- 19:22Speaker 8: you downtown.
- 19:23Speaker 11: I beg your pardon.
- 19:24Speaker 8: Say we're police officers. There's our identification. Like to talk
- 19:27Speaker 8: to you downtown.
- 19:28Speaker 11: What's it all about?
- 19:30Speaker 3: I haven't done anything, then, there's no reason to worry.
- 19:32Speaker 3: We'd just like to ask you a few questions, that's all.
- 19:34Speaker 3: What about Remember the name of Matt Garson. Understands you
- 19:38Speaker 3: know him quite well?
- 19:39Speaker 11: No, I don't know. I don't even know what you're
- 19:41Speaker 11: talking about.
- 19:41Speaker 8: I want to get your coat, Miss Ramsey. We'll talk
- 19:43Speaker 8: it over downtown. Huh.
- 19:45Speaker 11: I'm working now. Let's not be off till two o'clock.
- 19:48Speaker 11: I can't just walk off the chib.
- 19:49Speaker 8: We just talked to the manager. He's going to have
- 19:51Speaker 8: one of the other girls take your place. Do you
- 19:52Speaker 8: want to get your coat?
- 19:53Speaker 4: Police?
- 19:53Speaker 11: All right? You sure you checked with the manager. I
- 20:01Speaker 11: don't want to lose my job leaving like we talked
- 20:03Speaker 11: to him.
- 20:03Speaker 8: It's all right this way. Please have the side door.
- 20:10Speaker 11: Like to know what this whole thing's all about. I
- 20:12Speaker 11: think I have a right to me pulling you off
- 20:14Speaker 11: a job like this.
- 20:15Speaker 8: We told you, Miss Ramsey, it's about a friend of yours,
- 20:17Speaker 8: Matt Garson. He used to work here at the club,
- 20:19Speaker 8: didn't he?
- 20:20Speaker 11: I wouldn't know a lot of people work here. I
- 20:22Speaker 11: don't know him all. Why should you want him anyway?
- 20:26Speaker 8: Do you know him?
- 20:28Speaker 11: I think I might, yes, I'm not sure. Why do
- 20:31Speaker 11: you want him?
- 20:31Speaker 8: For interrogation? Just like to ask him a few questions?
- 20:34Speaker 8: Why you're ready to admit that you know Garson?
- 20:38Speaker 11: I think I might, Yeah, I know him.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I want to get in, Miss Ramsey.
- 20:45Speaker 11: Still don't know what it's all about. Why do you
- 20:48Speaker 11: want Matt Garson.
- 20:49Speaker 8: The same reason we want you? Suspicion of burglary.
- 20:52Speaker 11: You don't know what you're talking about. You can't prove
- 20:54Speaker 11: anything against me.
- 20:55Speaker 8: We already have, Miss Huh. We found three fur coachs
- 20:58Speaker 8: in your apartment. There was some jewelry there too.
- 21:00Speaker 11: Those things are mine, every one of them. They're all mine.
- 21:03Speaker 8: Might come on, you're wasting time. They're stolen property, you
- 21:05Speaker 8: know that.
- 21:06Speaker 3: How about it?
- 21:07Speaker 8: Miss?
- 21:07Speaker 3: You want to tell us about Matt Garson. Where is
- 21:09Speaker 3: he told?
- 21:10Speaker 11: You told your first time? I don't know him.
- 21:16Speaker 8: Ten PM we drove the suspect of Virginia Ramsey downtown
- 21:20Speaker 8: to the City Hall and took her to the interrogation room.
- 21:23Speaker 8: We questioned her continuously until well past midnight. She refused
- 21:26Speaker 8: to admit anything. We gave her time to rest a
- 21:29Speaker 8: little and set out for some food. Then we resumed
- 21:31Speaker 8: the interrogations. Two am. The Ramsey girls still refused to
- 21:36Speaker 8: admit any connection with Matt Garson, his friend Russell Snow,
- 21:39Speaker 8: or any members of the burglary gang. We stayed with it.
- 21:42Speaker 8: By four am, we'd halfway convinced her that protecting the
- 21:45Speaker 8: members of the gang wasn't the answer, that the best
- 21:48Speaker 8: thing for her to do would be to cooperate. Five
- 21:50Speaker 8: thirty AM.
- 21:52Speaker 11: I have a cigarette.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Yeah, here you.
- 22:02Speaker 11: I'll tell you about it. I know Matt Garson, he's
- 22:07Speaker 11: one of the gang.
- 22:07Speaker 8: You know where he is.
- 22:09Speaker 11: No, he got me into it, he made me do it.
- 22:13Speaker 11: There was anything else I can do?
- 22:14Speaker 8: What do you make you do?
- 22:16Speaker 11: Well? When I was checking coats and things at the club,
- 22:19Speaker 11: I was supposed to watch for customers with money, expensive
- 22:21Speaker 11: furs and jewels, I found out who they were, and
- 22:25Speaker 11: then I'd tell Matt.
- 22:26Speaker 3: He'd tell the others.
- 22:30Speaker 11: One of them's Johnny Lang. There are a couple of others,
- 22:34Speaker 11: but I don't know their names. Believe me, Sergeant Matt
- 22:38Speaker 11: made me do it. He got me into it before
- 22:40Speaker 11: I knew what it was all about. When I found out,
- 22:43Speaker 11: he threatened to frame me if I didn't go along
- 22:45Speaker 11: with him.
- 22:45Speaker 8: Do you know whereny of these men live where they
- 22:46Speaker 8: hang out?
- 22:48Speaker 11: No, none of them, not even Matt. Ever since he moved,
- 22:53Speaker 11: he wouldn't give me his new address.
- 22:55Speaker 8: Do you think Garsal will try to contact you with
- 22:56Speaker 8: your apartment in the next few days? Maybe?
- 22:59Speaker 11: No, I don't think so, not till after the next job.
- 23:01Speaker 11: They're waiting on it. No, they've been watching the house.
- 23:04Speaker 11: Which else is that place out worst Hollywood wealthy people.
- 23:08Speaker 11: They were in the club about a week.
- 23:09Speaker 8: Ago, and the gang's waiting for them to go out
- 23:12Speaker 8: some night and leave their valuables at home, isn't it?
- 23:14Speaker 11: Yeah, it's right. Matt says. It's an easy house to
- 23:16Speaker 11: break into. He thinks it ought to be sinch.
- 23:18Speaker 8: Matt, I don't know better.
- 23:19Speaker 11: Huh.
- 23:19Speaker 8: It's the easy ones you trip over before we booked
- 23:23Speaker 8: her in on suspicion of burglary, Virginia Ramsey gave us
- 23:26Speaker 8: the name and address of the people in West Hollywood
- 23:28Speaker 8: who were supposedly the next victims on the burglary gang's list.
- 23:32Speaker 8: Later in the morning, we drove out to see the people.
- 23:35Speaker 8: A mister and missus Thomas Thornson told them the story
- 23:38Speaker 8: and laid out our plans, which they agreed to. That night,
- 23:41Speaker 8: the Thornsons left their home a few minutes before nine.
- 23:44Speaker 8: They were simply dressed, no furs, no jewels. At nine
- 23:48Speaker 8: thirty five, three men scaled a fence at the rear
- 23:51Speaker 8: of the Thornton's home and broke in through a side door.
- 23:54Speaker 8: Right behind them was a detail of a half a
- 23:56Speaker 8: dozen officers who moved in and made the arrest. The
- 23:59Speaker 8: three suspects were taken downtown, where they were identified as
- 24:02Speaker 8: Russell Snow, Matt Garson, and Howard Ferris. We searched their apartments,
- 24:07Speaker 8: their cars, and garages. There was no trace of the
- 24:09Speaker 8: stolen property. Each of the men were brought to the
- 24:12Speaker 8: interrogation room separately for questioning. Matt Garson was the first.
- 24:15Speaker 8: He denied any knowledge of where the loop was hidden,
- 24:18Speaker 8: that's the truth. I don't know where the stuff is.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I worked for the outfit, that's all.
- 24:21Speaker 3: And you've been working for three months without a payoff.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Is that what you're trying to tell it?
- 24:24Speaker 4: Or we haven't been turned over everything.
- 24:26Speaker 3: We got hold not half of stuff, selling it on
- 24:29Speaker 3: the side.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I just worked for the outfit, that's all.
- 24:31Speaker 3: That's not the way we get at Guyson. You're supposed
- 24:33Speaker 3: to be the big man. You masterminded the deal. He
- 24:36Speaker 3: who told you that?
- 24:37Speaker 8: Your girlfriend, Virginia Ramsey, We picked her up yesterday. She
- 24:40Speaker 8: told us everything.
- 24:41Speaker 3: What'd you tell you?
- 24:42Speaker 8: You're the big man? Was your idea? You ran the works?
- 24:46Speaker 4: What about it? Garson?
- 24:48Speaker 3: Big joke, sergeant on both of us? What do you mean?
- 24:50Speaker 3: You can ask the other boys. They'll tell you the
- 24:52Speaker 3: same thing. We can prove it too. There's only one
- 24:54Speaker 3: boss in this operation, man, Virginia Ramsey.
- 25:00Speaker 8: For a twenty three year old girl. It seemed like
- 25:02Speaker 8: a new record of some kind if it was true.
- 25:05Speaker 8: We checked the other suspects, Russell Snow and Howard Ferris.
- 25:09Speaker 8: They told us substantially the same story. The Ramsey girl
- 25:12Speaker 8: had formulated all the plans and directed the entire operation
- 25:15Speaker 8: of the gang since its inception. They insisted that they
- 25:18Speaker 8: had no idea where the stolen property was hidden, but
- 25:21Speaker 8: they did know that the Ramsey girl had a safety
- 25:23Speaker 8: deposit box in a downtown bank. We made a canvas
- 25:27Speaker 8: of banks in the downtown area, and a day later
- 25:29Speaker 8: we located the safety deposit box listed in Miss Ramsey's name.
- 25:33Speaker 8: We obtained a court order and the box was opened.
- 25:36Speaker 8: In it, we found practically all of the stolen jewelry,
- 25:39Speaker 8: almost fifty thousand dollars worth. Ben and I went back
- 25:42Speaker 8: to the main jail where we had Virginia Ramsey signed
- 25:44Speaker 8: out for investigation. We brought her to the interrogation room
- 25:48Speaker 8: where we confronted her with the evidence.
- 25:49Speaker 11: I didn't think you'd find out. I didn't think you'd
- 25:52Speaker 11: ever find out.
- 25:53Speaker 3: How about the first Miss Ramsey, I.
- 25:55Speaker 11: Got the key, you can have it. I rented a
- 25:57Speaker 11: private garage. I got some stored in there, all of
- 25:59Speaker 11: them just about Yeah, you picked up the others in
- 26:02Speaker 11: my apartment.
- 26:03Speaker 8: How'd you manage to run this whole operation? Those men
- 26:06Speaker 8: you had working for you, you cut them in for practically nothing.
- 26:08Speaker 8: They were experts, the best in the business.
- 26:10Speaker 11: That's why I hired them. They're the best. It's too
- 26:14Speaker 11: bad she had worked out too bad, didn't go You had.
- 26:18Speaker 3: A pretty fair run.
- 26:20Speaker 11: Wasn't that bad for me? Wasn't only twenty three? First
- 26:24Speaker 11: time I ever tried anything like it?
- 26:26Speaker 3: What gave you the idea?
- 26:28Speaker 11: I don't know. I wanted things pretty smart setup, though,
- 26:32Speaker 11: don't you think so? Wouldn't you say I played the
- 26:35Speaker 11: whole thing pretty smart?
- 26:36Speaker 4: Oh?
- 26:37Speaker 8: I don't know. You figured what You're in jail, aren't you.
- 26:47Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true, only the
- 26:50Speaker 2: names were changed to protect the innocent. On March twenty eighth,
- 26:53Speaker 2: the trial was held in Superior Court, Department eighty nine,
- 26:57Speaker 2: City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:59Speaker 4: A moment the.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Results of that trial, twenty three year old Virginia Ramsay,
- 27:12Speaker 2: the leader of the gang, was tried and convicted on
- 27:15Speaker 2: four counts of first degree burglary and four counts of
- 27:18Speaker 2: receiving stolen property. The three male members of the gang
- 27:22Speaker 2: were convicted of first degree burglary, also four counts. They
- 27:26Speaker 2: are now serving their terms in the state penitentiary. First
- 27:29Speaker 2: degree burglary is punishable by imprisonment for not less than
- 27:32Speaker 2: five years. Receiving stolen property is punishable by imprisonment for
- 27:36Speaker 2: not less than six months no more than five years.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, vacation time is here again, and a
- 27:44Speaker 2: great many of you will be taking trips in your automobile.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Danger is never absent from the highways of America.
- 27:50Speaker 8: Be careful.
- 27:51Speaker 6: The care you take may save a life, and that
- 27:53Speaker 6: life may be your own.
- 28:04Speaker 7: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 28:07Speaker 7: from official fireouts. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 28:10Speaker 7: Chief of Police wh Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 28:15Speaker 6: Stay tuned for counters by next over most NBC.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Stations, Welcome back. I hate to attack the honor of
- 28:31Speaker 1: Finnish burglars. That's one of those senses you just never
- 28:35Speaker 1: expect to say. But the real reasons they don't rob
- 28:39Speaker 1: houses when people are there is because they don't want witnesses.
- 28:43Speaker 1: And this case illustrates why, as that one error led
- 28:47Speaker 1: to the police getting their big lead and ultimately prison
- 28:50Speaker 1: time for all involved. Well, now we turn to listener
- 28:54Speaker 1: comments and feedback, and we're going over to Spotify with
- 28:58Speaker 1: a comment from Harrison who Rights regarding the Big Cleft.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I went to bed last night and I had a
- 29:07Speaker 1: wife sounds like the start of a traveling Willburry song.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Romero's yeah, and his Joe, I wouldn't worry about it.
- 29:16Speaker 1: We'll call it a white lie. Both caught me off
- 29:19Speaker 1: guard for different reasons, but both deserved a radio award
- 29:22Speaker 1: for delivery. He delivers laugh and can tug on the heart.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Another reason he's my favorite partner of Joe's. There's a
- 29:31Speaker 1: restaurant called Cephalous, so I'm picturing a waiter giving an
- 29:34Speaker 1: autopsy report. Well, thank you so much. I appreciate the comments.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I had actually look up the Traveling Willberry's and I
- 29:42Speaker 1: thought they were really obscure, but it was actually a
- 29:45Speaker 1: super group of musicians including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, jeff Lynn,
- 29:53Speaker 1: Roy Overson and Tom Petty and even someone whose knowledge
- 29:58Speaker 1: of rock music is so woefully low, I can recognize
- 30:05Speaker 1: that that would have been an amazing gro So thanks
- 30:09Speaker 1: for expanding my knowledge a little bit. Marton Yarborough definitely
- 30:13Speaker 1: brings a different dynamic, and you rarely get the sort
- 30:17Speaker 1: of comedy sketch effectively that you got when you get
- 30:21Speaker 1: into the sort of Ben Alexander and Harry Morgan eras
- 30:27Speaker 1: as Friday's partner, but there are all these nice, little,
- 30:31Speaker 1: understated bits of humor that really make him a believable cop.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And Yarborough, definitely, I think is a bit underrated in
- 30:42Speaker 1: part because he got because of his accent, sort of
- 30:46Speaker 1: natural accent, he got a lot of random Texas person
- 30:51Speaker 1: roles that could be a bit one dimensional, but he
- 30:54Speaker 1: was a talented actor and really brought something great to
- 30:58Speaker 1: drag it. Thanks so much, appreciate your comments. And now
- 31:02Speaker 1: it is time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and I want to thank Mark, Patreon supporter since March

- 31:43Speaker 14: the Ohio and pretty severe this year Johnny somewhat later
- 31:47Speaker 14: than usual.
- 31:48Speaker 7: Yeah, that much.
- 31:48Speaker 14: I did read about half a dozen of the big
- 31:50Speaker 14: cities have been taking a real beating in spite of
- 31:53Speaker 14: all their preparations for the big run on that's been
- 31:55Speaker 14: through all over the country. Well, what you don't read
- 31:58Speaker 14: about in the headlines, though, is a little place like Carterret.
- 32:02Speaker 14: It's my old hometown, Johnny. I've sold a lot of
- 32:04Speaker 14: policies there, particularly to the local shopkeepers.
- 32:07Speaker 4: You know, on their.
- 32:08Speaker 14: Stocks and merchandise. So there's been a lot of flood
- 32:10Speaker 14: damage and your company's having to pay up a lot
- 32:12Speaker 14: of claim Not yet. So far, the town's been lucky.
- 32:16Speaker 14: Most of the recent bad storms have been across the
- 32:17Speaker 14: state line up in Pennsylvania or over in West Virginia,
- 32:21Speaker 14: the same as too.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Last year and the year before.
- 32:23Speaker 4: So the people.
- 32:25Speaker 14: Gone around Cottaret farmers mostly haven't gone ahead with their
- 32:28Speaker 14: flood control project the way they should have.
- 32:30Speaker 4: It's kinda red right on the Ohio.
- 32:32Speaker 14: No, it's in a valley a few miles north. It's
- 32:35Speaker 14: on the Crooked River, and parts of the town are
- 32:37Speaker 14: actually below the river bank. And you see what that means.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I sure can.
- 32:42Speaker 14: Most of the year it's a quiet, lazy stream about
- 32:45Speaker 14: fifty or sixty feet wide. But when the feeder streams
- 32:48Speaker 14: up in the hills start pouring water down and never
- 32:51Speaker 14: overflows half a time, will go with it and swept
- 32:54Speaker 14: right down into the Ohio.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime,
