- 0:00Speaker 1: And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down
- 0:04Speaker 1: out of the ship, he walked on the water to
- 0:07Speaker 1: go to Jesus. Matthew 14, 29 Multiply whatever touches my hand, Lord.
- 0:17Speaker 1: As I give to serve the lives of others, like
- 0:20Speaker 1: the little boy in Matthew 14 and John 6, 1-10,
- 0:25Speaker 1: I thank you, Jesus, because you can take little in
- 0:28Speaker 1: my hand. and make it grand. As I continually step
- 0:34Speaker 1: out in faith, meet me at the place of my
- 0:37Speaker 1: obedience and take whatever gifting and ability I have and
- 0:42Speaker 1: reproduce it and replicate it in such a way that
- 0:46Speaker 1: thousands and millions of your children can be blessed. But
- 0:51Speaker 1: don't stop with that miracle. As I continue to listen
- 0:55Speaker 1: to your word, allow me to walk on and over
- 1:00Speaker 1: situations in my life that should cause me to sink.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I declare that my focus will remain steadfast on you, Jesus.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I declare that I will not lose sight of who
- 1:14Speaker 1: it is that has called me out into the deep
- 1:17Speaker 1: waters of purpose. I decree that I am a water walker.
- 1:24Speaker 1: filled with the anointing to multiply everything that touches my life.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And I am not afraid to speak this truth over
- 1:33Speaker 1: my life. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thanks for making prayer
- 1:42Speaker 1: a priority in your life. To hear the Bible come
- 1:45Speaker 1: to life, stay tuned for the Bible in a Year.

- 2:00Speaker 2: Walking on Water In our last story, we learned about
- 2:04Speaker 2: the brutal beheading of John the Baptist. The man who
- 2:08Speaker 2: spent his entire life paving a way for the Son
- 2:11Speaker 2: of God was executed. However, his death would not be
- 2:14Speaker 2: the end for him. He would be embraced by God
- 2:17Speaker 2: the Father into the gates of heaven. Now we learn
- 2:21Speaker 2: about the providing power of Jesus through the feeding of
- 2:24Speaker 2: 5,000 people. Then we learn about Jesus' power over nature itself.
- 2:30Speaker 2: As one of the disciples attempts to join Jesus in faith,
- 2:33Speaker 2: he finds himself failing. As inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:43Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. But before we begin, I want
- 2:46Speaker 3: to let you know about a unique e-book that's yours
- 2:49Speaker 3: to download absolutely free today. It's called Breaking Free from Stress.
- 2:55Speaker 3: And my prayer is that it will help you conquer
- 2:58Speaker 3: the daily tasks and pressures and burdens that bring stress
- 3:01Speaker 3: in your life. Download your free copy of Breaking Free
- 3:05Speaker 3: from Stress today by visiting jackgram.org slash stress. That's jackgram.org
- 3:12Speaker 3: slash stress. In our previous episode, we heard how King
- 3:17Speaker 3: Herod's wife Herodias conspired to have John the Baptist beheaded
- 3:21Speaker 3: simply for her enjoyment. and to silence the man who
- 3:24Speaker 3: had preached repentance and announced the coming of Jesus the Messiah.
- 3:29Speaker 3: As his ministry came to an end, the earthly ministry
- 3:32Speaker 3: of Jesus continued to grow with more and more people following,
- 3:36Speaker 3: not only to hear him teach, but also to experience
- 3:39Speaker 3: hope and healing. Today, we'll learn how Jesus miraculously feeds
- 3:44Speaker 3: a crowd of people using what little is available to
- 3:47Speaker 3: provide abundantly more than anyone could have imagined. Then, We'll
- 3:52Speaker 3: hear how Jesus amazed and astounded his disciples by displaying
- 3:57Speaker 3: miraculous control over the very laws of the natural world.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Let's listen now to the reading of God's word.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Jesus trekked across the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
- 4:09Speaker 2: For miles he traveled beside the shores, listening to the
- 4:13Speaker 2: bustling crowd behind him. His popularity had grown, and now
- 4:17Speaker 2: it was nearly impossible for him to take a stroll
- 4:20Speaker 2: without thousands of people at his back. Jesus peered at
- 4:23Speaker 2: a small hill beside the shore and began to walk
- 4:26Speaker 2: up it. As he reached the top, he turned around
- 4:29Speaker 2: to see 5,000 faces peering up at him. Their eyes
- 4:33Speaker 2: beamed with joyful expectation. His disciples sat down beside him
- 4:38Speaker 2: and watched the crowd get comfortable. Jesus taught them about
- 4:42Speaker 2: the kingdom of heaven. He spoke about the will of
- 4:45Speaker 2: God as one who had complete authority. The crowd was
- 4:49Speaker 2: captivated by his words, However, the sun was high in
- 4:52Speaker 2: the sky, and they had walked many miles. Jesus had
- 4:56Speaker 2: sensed that the crowd was growing hungry for more than
- 4:58Speaker 2: just the word of God. Jesus turned to Philip and asked,
- 5:03Speaker 2: Is there anywhere nearby to buy bread for these people?
- 5:06Speaker 2: Jesus asked this question with a purpose. He knew the answer,
- 5:10Speaker 2: but wanted Philip to behold what was about to take place.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Two hundred denarii would not even be able to feed
- 5:16Speaker 2: these people, Jesus, Philip responded. Even if we had enough money,
- 5:21Speaker 2: no baker would have this much bread all at once.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Andrew chimed in and said, I know there is a
- 5:27Speaker 2: boy who brought his own food, but he only has
- 5:30Speaker 2: five loaves and two fish. It really isn't enough to
- 5:34Speaker 2: feed anybody. Jesus stood to his feet and put his
- 5:37Speaker 2: arms around his disciples. He laughed and said, Well, we
- 5:41Speaker 2: will see if it is enough. Go and have all
- 5:44Speaker 2: the people sit down. So all the people sat down
- 5:47Speaker 2: on the grassy hill beside the shore. The boy with
- 5:50Speaker 2: the five loaves and two fishes brought his food to Jesus.
- 5:54Speaker 2: He gave them up, not sure if it would even
- 5:56Speaker 2: feed two grown men, let alone 5,000 people. Nevertheless, the
- 6:01Speaker 2: boy wanted to be a part of what Jesus was doing,
- 6:03Speaker 2: so he sacrificed what little he had. As it turns out,
- 6:07Speaker 2: it would be enough. Jesus split the loaves and fishes
- 6:11Speaker 2: into 12 baskets and rose them in the air. He
- 6:14Speaker 2: blessed them and thanked the Lord for his abundant provision.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Then he gave the baskets to his disciples and had
- 6:21Speaker 2: them walk around the crowd dispersing the food. To their amazement,
- 6:25Speaker 2: the baskets were filled to the brim with loaves and fishes.
- 6:28Speaker 2: They did not see the baskets filled. They did not
- 6:31Speaker 2: see anybody put more food in. It was a simple
- 6:35Speaker 2: yet powerful miracle. So the entire crowd was full with
- 6:39Speaker 2: a wonderful meal, and there was still plenty left over
- 6:42Speaker 2: for the disciples to eat. After the crowd had eaten,
- 6:45Speaker 2: mumbles of Jesus' power became a mighty roar. People erupted
- 6:50Speaker 2: in praise at his humble might. So they called for
- 6:53Speaker 2: him to be made king over Israel. If they could
- 6:56Speaker 2: make him king, perhaps all hunger would be eradicated. Perhaps
- 7:00Speaker 2: all suffering and sickness would be gone. They wanted Jesus
- 7:03Speaker 2: to rule over them, and they were willing to take
- 7:06Speaker 2: him by force to make it happen. The crowd stirred,
- 7:09Speaker 2: and some of the men shouted for them to take
- 7:11Speaker 2: Jesus to force him on the throne. Jesus, perceiving the
- 7:15Speaker 2: threat before it became violent, took his disciples and loaded
- 7:18Speaker 2: them into a boat. He sent them away to go
- 7:21Speaker 2: to the other side of the sea and assured them
- 7:24Speaker 2: he would meet them there. The disciples launched off and
- 7:27Speaker 2: raised their sail. As they were sailing away, they could
- 7:30Speaker 2: see Jesus on the shore, walking up a small mountain
- 7:33Speaker 2: to be alone with God. The sun was setting, and
- 7:37Speaker 2: Jesus sat alone with God. He spoke tenderly to his
- 7:41Speaker 2: Father and was refreshed in his presence. Miles away, the
- 7:46Speaker 2: wind was picking up in the middle of the sea.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Waves began to crash against the side of the disciples' boat.
- 7:52Speaker 2: The setting sun shed light on the chopping waves as
- 7:55Speaker 2: the disciples desperately held on to the sides. As the
- 7:59Speaker 2: disciples were being tossed by the wind, one of them
- 8:02Speaker 2: could see a figure in the distance. It stood above
- 8:05Speaker 2: the waves as if it was shifting ground.' What is that?'
- 8:09Speaker 2: they shouted. All of them shifted to the side of
- 8:11Speaker 2: the boat.' Is it a ghost?' they asked. The figure
- 8:15Speaker 2: walked closer to them, and their hearts beat fast with fear.
- 8:19Speaker 2: As dusk broke into night, the figure was close enough
- 8:22Speaker 2: to see. It was Jesus, walking above the breakers and
- 8:26Speaker 2: the waves.' Take heart!' Jesus shouted.' It is I! Do
- 8:31Speaker 2: not be afraid!' The men could barely believe their own eyes.
- 8:35Speaker 2: They had seen Jesus calm the storms before, but now
- 8:38Speaker 2: he walked upon it like steady earth. Peter's eyes began
- 8:42Speaker 2: to well up with tears and his heart fluttered in
- 8:45Speaker 2: his chest. Lord, he said, if it is truly you,
- 8:49Speaker 2: command me to come out to you and walk on
- 8:51Speaker 2: the water. Jesus extended his hand and smiled. Come then,
- 8:57Speaker 2: he said. So Peter approached the side of the boat.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It was still rocking from the waves below. He stuck
- 9:03Speaker 2: out one leg towards the water and felt it steady
- 9:06Speaker 2: underneath him. So he brought his other leg overboard. and
- 9:10Speaker 2: saw that the waters did not consume him. The disciples gasped,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and tears fell down Peter's eyes as he looked at Jesus.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Like an infant taking his first steps, Peter walked towards
- 9:22Speaker 2: Jesus on the choppy waters. He could see his Lord
- 9:25Speaker 2: smiling as he took each step. Peter's heart could not
- 9:28Speaker 2: be more filled with joy. He looked at Jesus as
- 9:32Speaker 2: a son to his father. However, when the wind brushed
- 9:35Speaker 2: up against his hair, it forced him to look around.
- 9:38Speaker 2: He could see the crashing waves and strong winds around him.
- 9:43Speaker 2: He looked down at the dark, consuming water below him.
- 9:46Speaker 2: As Peter took his eyes off Jesus, he felt himself
- 9:49Speaker 2: beginning to sink. Peter felt the support of his feet
- 9:53Speaker 2: give way as he dropped into the black abyss. He
- 9:56Speaker 2: gasped for air, but was then buried underneath a wave.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Peter was terrified. He went from complete awe to utter panic.
- 10:05Speaker 2: As the waves crashed over his head, Peter cried out
- 10:07Speaker 2: to Jesus. In his hysteria, he was able to speak
- 10:11Speaker 2: one of the most powerful prayers ever spoken, a prayer
- 10:14Speaker 2: that would echo in eternity, a prayer so simple yet
- 10:18Speaker 2: so filled with meaning that if anyone spoke it, they
- 10:20Speaker 2: would be forever embraced by the loving arms of the Father.
- 10:24Speaker 2: As Peter was surrounded by waves and gasping for air,
- 10:27Speaker 2: he looked up and shouted, Jesus, save me! Peter was
- 10:32Speaker 2: hit by another wave and felt himself sinking deeper into
- 10:35Speaker 2: the dark belly of the sea. His mind began to
- 10:39Speaker 2: fog and his strength failed. Then two arms reached down
- 10:44Speaker 2: and grabbed Peter from the depths. He emerged out of
- 10:47Speaker 2: the water in the arms of Jesus. The Lord walked
- 10:51Speaker 2: Peter back into the boat, and the waves subsided. Peter
- 10:55Speaker 2: lay on his back, catching his breath. All the disciples
- 10:58Speaker 2: looked at Jesus. The winds calmed, and the sea was
- 11:02Speaker 2: as still as glass. The stars shone brightly above them,
- 11:05Speaker 2: illuminating Jesus' face. They looked up to him and said, Truly,
- 11:11Speaker 2: you are the Son of God.
- 11:20Speaker 3: In today's scripture, Jesus and his disciples are on a hillside,
- 11:25Speaker 3: but they are not alone. A multitude of people have
- 11:28Speaker 3: followed them across the countryside to this remote spot where
- 11:32Speaker 3: Jesus had retreated after he'd heard of the death of
- 11:35Speaker 3: John the Baptist. For hours, Jesus taught them, pouring out wisdom,
- 11:41Speaker 3: God's word, truth straight from the heart of God. Just
- 11:45Speaker 3: imagine how captivating it must have been to listen to
- 11:48Speaker 3: Jesus speak. each word so full of meaning and depth.
- 11:54Speaker 3: He spoke like no one before him, and the Bible
- 11:57Speaker 3: says the common people heard him gladly. The people hung
- 12:01Speaker 3: on to his every word, even if they couldn't fully
- 12:04Speaker 3: understand all that it meant at times. As the day
- 12:07Speaker 3: drew on, the time came when people would have been
- 12:10Speaker 3: retiring to their homes for a supper, a bite to eat,
- 12:14Speaker 3: but they were all far away from home, and it
- 12:16Speaker 3: seems that there had been no mention of a potluck dinner.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So nobody brought food. Well, almost nobody. The disciples went
- 12:24Speaker 3: to Jesus to ask him to send the crowd away
- 12:26Speaker 3: so they could eat, but Jesus assured them they didn't
- 12:30Speaker 3: need to be sent away hungry. He then asked Philip
- 12:33Speaker 3: a question that was meant to test the disciples. He asked,
- 12:37Speaker 3: where can we find bread to give to all these people?
- 12:40Speaker 3: How can we feed this crowd? Ever the pragmatic, Philip said,
- 12:47Speaker 3: There's not enough food here to feed the whole multitude,
- 12:50Speaker 3: even if they all just had a single bite. We
- 12:54Speaker 3: don't have enough money. We don't have enough resources to
- 12:57Speaker 3: feed this crowd. Once again, we see people operating with
- 13:01Speaker 3: a mindset of scarcity. But Jesus was about to show
- 13:05Speaker 3: them that the operative word for God is abundance, that
- 13:09Speaker 3: God can do exceedingly abundantly more than we ask or think. Andrew,
- 13:14Speaker 3: Peter's brother, then brought a glimmer of hope and faith.
- 13:19Speaker 3: There was a boy, just a small boy, with five
- 13:21Speaker 3: loaves of barley and two fish. But how would that
- 13:26Speaker 3: feed more than 5,000 people? Then in Matthew 14, 18,
- 13:31Speaker 3: we read Jesus replied. He said, Bring them here to me.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Isn't that what God says to each of us? Take
- 13:40Speaker 3: your little, take your not enough, and give it to Jesus.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Then watch what God can do as he performs miracles
- 13:48Speaker 3: in our lives. Jesus took what the boy brought, and
- 13:53Speaker 3: he had the people sit down. He gave thanks. He
- 13:56Speaker 3: blessed it, a reminder that we are always to thank God,
- 13:59Speaker 3: even for the little that we may have, as well
- 14:02Speaker 3: as a lot. And then he began to break the
- 14:04Speaker 3: bread and handed it to the disciples to give the
- 14:07Speaker 3: food to the crowd. Not a person went hungry that day.
- 14:11Speaker 3: In fact, they were all filled. In fact, There were
- 14:14Speaker 3: 12 baskets full of food left over, one for each
- 14:17Speaker 3: of the disciples. When the crowd saw what Jesus had done,
- 14:21Speaker 3: they were amazed, of course. They had just seen the supernatural.
- 14:26Speaker 3: But they failed to get the real message of the miracle,
- 14:29Speaker 3: and Jesus knew this. They wanted to take him by
- 14:32Speaker 3: force and make him king, a political messiah. But this
- 14:36Speaker 3: wasn't God's plan, and it wasn't the kind of kingdom
- 14:39Speaker 3: that he was bringing. They wanted unearthly kingdoms. They wanted
- 14:44Speaker 3: a military Messiah. They wanted comfort. But Jesus was bringing
- 14:49Speaker 3: a promise of the future, a heavenly kingdom, and a
- 14:52Speaker 3: spiritual freedom that comes when we know the grace and
- 14:55Speaker 3: the glory of God. So Jesus moved quickly and dismissed
- 15:00Speaker 3: the crowds, sending them home and ushering his disciples into
- 15:04Speaker 3: the boats while he retreated to pray and seek strength
- 15:07Speaker 3: and comfort from his Father in heaven. So Jesus sent
- 15:11Speaker 3: his disciples into the boats and to the other side.
- 15:15Speaker 3: But as evening fell, the waves on the water grew
- 15:18Speaker 3: and tossed the boat around. The sea was churning, and
- 15:21Speaker 3: Jesus was not with them. There was no one to
- 15:23Speaker 3: speak to the wind and the waves, just them. And
- 15:27Speaker 3: even though they were professional fishermen, some of them, they
- 15:30Speaker 3: could not handle this storm. And the disciples knew they
- 15:33Speaker 3: were going under. As the disciples looked across the waters
- 15:37Speaker 3: to the shore in fear, They saw a figure coming
- 15:40Speaker 3: their way, defying the laws of nature. This one glided
- 15:44Speaker 3: across the water. They were terrified, thinking it was a ghost.
- 15:48Speaker 3: But then Jesus identified himself as the Great I Am
- 15:52Speaker 3: and the One who could calm the storms without and
- 15:56Speaker 3: calm the storms within. He said, Do not be afraid. Peter,
- 16:01Speaker 3: ever the bold one, replied that if it was Jesus,
- 16:04Speaker 3: to call out to him so he could also walk
- 16:07Speaker 3: on the water. Jesus told him to come, and as
- 16:10Speaker 3: Peter stepped out of the boat, a step few of
- 16:12Speaker 3: us would have dared to take, when he took that risk, he,
- 16:17Speaker 3: of course, was amazing himself. His feet did not sink,
- 16:21Speaker 3: but traveled as if it were on firm ground. God
- 16:24Speaker 3: had parted the waters for Moses and Joshua and the Israelites,
- 16:27Speaker 3: but now Jesus was demonstrating that dry land wasn't even needed.
- 16:32Speaker 3: At his command, the raging seas could become a well-worn path,
- 16:36Speaker 3: steady and sure. because Jesus is the master of the
- 16:39Speaker 3: waves and sea. All is well as Peter's gaze stayed
- 16:43Speaker 3: on Christ, but then he shifted his eyes, saw the
- 16:46Speaker 3: dangers he perceived, and began to believe they were more powerful,
- 16:50Speaker 3: and he began to sink. Notice that Jesus didn't tell
- 16:54Speaker 3: him to turn back and run to the boat. When
- 16:57Speaker 3: Peter cried for help, Jesus came to the rescue. He
- 17:00Speaker 3: held him and helped him and reassured him, and then
- 17:04Speaker 3: no doubt carried him back to the boat in a
- 17:06Speaker 3: place of safety. When we trust God and step out
- 17:10Speaker 3: in faith and take bold risk at his commands, we
- 17:13Speaker 3: also will see miracles in our lives. And if we fail,
- 17:18Speaker 3: know that Jesus is there to save us and carry
- 17:21Speaker 3: us home. He is our loving Savior, the Christ of
- 17:24Speaker 3: every crisis. Give your life to him. Just as the
- 17:27Speaker 3: boy gave the fish and the bread to Jesus, give
- 17:31Speaker 3: what you have to him. And just as Jesus walked
- 17:34Speaker 3: on the water reminding us that everything over our heads
- 17:37Speaker 3: is under his feet, put your life in his hands
- 17:40Speaker 3: because he will never leave you or forsake you. Dear God,
- 17:45Speaker 3: we know that you are more than able to do
- 17:47Speaker 3: abundantly more than we could ever ask, think, or imagine.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Thank you that you provide for our need and that
- 17:54Speaker 3: you call us then to step out in faith, to
- 17:56Speaker 3: trust you, and to believe in you. May we never
- 17:59Speaker 3: take our eyes off of you. We think of the
- 18:03Speaker 3: old gospel song, Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full
- 18:07Speaker 3: into his wonderful face, and the things of earth will
- 18:10Speaker 3: grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Thank you, Lord, for being the Christ of every crisis
- 18:18Speaker 3: in our lives and in the lives of our family,
- 18:21Speaker 3: our friends, and people all around us who need you
- 18:24Speaker 3: and who will call upon you. Thank you for being
- 18:27Speaker 3: our help and our salvation, the one who can deliver
- 18:30Speaker 3: us and save us from every circumstance in life. Thank
- 18:34Speaker 3: you for being our helper, our savior, our deliverer. We
- 18:38Speaker 3: pray in Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening to
- 18:43Speaker 3: today's Bible in a Year podcast. Before we go, I
