- 0:00Goa, India. I mean, when you hear that name,
- 0:03a certain picture just immediately pops into your head.
- 0:06Joe absolutely. It's a brand.
- 0:08You're thinking trans parties on the beach.
- 0:09You're thinking cheap beer, maybe.
- 0:12Maybe a couple of cows just wandering across the sand.
- 0:14Totally. Like they own the place.
- 0:16And that's the perception we kind of all have.
- 0:18It's been around for decades. And that's exactly what we're
- 0:20here to challenge today. We are going completely
- 0:23contrarian on this. We're not talking about that old
- 0:25party path. You know, the package tour
- 0:26thing. We're doing a deep dive
- 0:28specifically on what I think you, the listener, are probably
- 0:32looking for today, which is Beach Sanctuary Wildlife.
- 0:36Right, that quiet escape, that art of slow living that the
- 0:39locals call Seussgad. Exactly seussdad.
- 0:42OK, so let's unpack this idea of sanctuary because I have to
- 0:45start with a just an immediate essential warning based on
- 0:48everything we've looked at. Yeah, this is important.
- 0:50If you are chasing that vision of a tropical paradise and you
- 0:54go and book a place in North Goa and I'm talking that central
- 0:57strip, Kalengut, Fogga, Candelum, you're going to be so
- 1:02disappointed. Miserable.
- 1:04You might even be miserable. The sources are crystal clear on
- 1:07this. Those main tourist zones are
- 1:09just they've transformed. They're traffic clogged,
- 1:12construction heavy nightmares. It's not the escape you have in
- 1:15your head. Not at all.
- 1:16It's the opposite of that. It sounds like the promise of
- 1:19Goa is kind of being eaten alive by its own popularity, yeah.
- 1:24But you have a counterclaim, right?
- 1:26A reason to still go. I do.
- 1:27And that negativity. That's the necessary reality
- 1:30check you need upfront. But here's my bold counterclaim.
- 1:34Goa is still one of the most spiritually grounding places in
- 1:38all of Asia. OK but, and this is a huge but,
- 1:42you have to fight to find it. You have to be willing to
- 1:44completely bypass that initial mess.
- 1:46Drive like 2 hours South and consciously look for it.
- 1:49That's the only way you'll find the real you SCAD.
- 1:52And that is our mission today. We're going to show you exactly
- 1:54how to win that fight, give you the logistics, the insider
- 1:56knowledge to make sure your trip is about sanctuary, not stress.
- 2:00And we're starting with three big contrarian surprises, the
- 2:03kind of aha moments that just instantly reframe your whole
- 2:07plan. Yeah, these really blew my mind.
- 2:08OK surprise #1 Goa is not really a beach destination.
- 2:13Right, it sounds insane. We only talk about the coast and
- 2:16Juna Pelolum, but historically, culturally, Goa is a river
- 2:21destination that just happens to have sand.
- 2:23Its whole economy and history were built around the Mandovi
- 2:26and Zwari rivers. That's the key to understanding
- 2:28the whole landscape. It's why the jungle is so dense
- 2:31inland, why the old towns are set back from the coast.
- 2:34You have to look inland. OK, surprise #2 and this is for
- 2:38anyone looking for that wildlife piece.
- 2:40The animals here are a bigger danger than the scams.
- 2:44I mean, this is a fundamental mind shift.
- 2:45We're not just talking about, you know, some guy trying to
- 2:48overcharge you for a taxi. The sources are clear.
- 2:51In the jungle fringes. You have cobras, you have
- 2:53leopards. They are there.
- 2:55Wow, so it's less about protecting your wallet and more
- 2:57about respecting the environment and, well, protecting yourself.
- 3:01It totally elevates the stakes. And the third surprise, the one
- 3:04that hits the wallet. Go is absolutely not a budget
- 3:07destination anymore. Not even close.
- 3:10The sources are relentless on this.
- 3:12If you have those stories in your head of the $5 beach Hut
- 3:16from the early 2000s, just erase them.
- 3:19Gone. Completely gone.
- 3:20The economy has been warped and we're going to break down
- 3:22exactly what things cost now. But before we get to the fixes,
- 3:25we have to acknowledge the one major, major downside that comes
- 3:29up everywhere. And it's kind of heartbreaking.
- 3:32It's the trash problem. The crowd, the crowds and the
- 3:35construction, that's one thing. But the plastic, the waste, it's
- 3:39a systemic issue and it really does tarnish the magic of a
- 3:42place that is just so stunningly beautiful otherwise.
- 3:45It's an infrastructure crisis, really.
- 3:46It is, but we promised to deliver.
- 3:48We're going to give you the exact budget ranges for finding
- 3:51that sanctuary. We will show you how to beat the
- 3:54taxi mafia, and by the end we'll give you a final honest verdict.
- 3:57Is go is still worth it for you? All right, let's dive into
- 4:00Segment 1. Context, the reality on the
- 4:02ground. Why has Goa changed so much, so
- 4:05fast? It all comes down to a huge,
- 4:07rapid demographic shift. Yeah, and the pandemic just
- 4:10threw gasoline on that fire. I mean, historically, for
- 4:13decades, Goa's tourism was really predictable.
- 4:15You had two main groups. Right.
- 4:16The British retirees, the charter tourists who'd come for
- 4:19the whole winter. Exactly.
- 4:20And then you had the Israeli backpackers and other Western
- 4:24budget travelers making their way through Asia.
- 4:26It was a very stable low to mid price.
- 4:29The new demographic has just warped that reality completely.
- 4:33Completely. The sources point to this
- 4:35massive influx of remote workers.
- 4:37We're talking high earning professionals from India's big
- 4:40tech cities Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and.
- 4:44They're bringing their big city salaries with them.
- 4:45And their big city expectations. They want faster Internet, they
- 4:48want high end cafes, imported food and they are willing to pay
- 4:52way way higher rents and prices for everything.
- 4:55So that instantly drives up the cost of living for everyone.
- 4:58And it changes the vibe. You add to that this huge influx
- 5:01of Russian longstairs people who are basically setting up semi
- 5:05permanent homes in the north. And the whole culture shifts.
- 5:08I love how one source put it used to go to Goa, to disappear,
- 5:12to just vanish. Yeah, to practice, use God.
- 5:15Now people go to Goa to be seen to post about their digital
- 5:20nomad life. It's a performance.
- 5:22Which brings us right to this core conflict, the curated lie
- 5:25versus the ground truth. Yes, the Instagram lie.
- 5:28You see these perfect shots of an Infinity pool in US ago.
- 5:32You know, with the perfect jungle backdrop.
- 5:34Or these edited photos of empty, clean white sand beaches.
- 5:39And that curated lie just sets you up for failure because the
- 5:42ground truth, what you're actually going to deal with
- 5:43every day, is this fine red dust that gets on every.
- 5:48And everything. Your bags, your clothes.
- 5:49And you're navigating these dangerously narrow roads.
- 5:52You're in gridlock traffic, and you're seeing this constant
- 5:55visible battle between, you know, the beautiful old
- 5:58Portuguese villas and just raw concrete development popping up
- 6:02everywhere. It's a concrete.
- 6:03War on preservation. It is, and that's why if your
- 6:05trip focuses sanctuary and wildlife, it's such a challenge.
- 6:08The wildlife is actively retreating from the noise and
- 6:11the construction. You can't find it on the coast
- 6:13anymore. No chance.
- 6:14And to really hammer this point home, the sources have this
- 6:17perfect description of the developed N, specifically
- 6:20Kellengut and Gaga. They're not charming beach towns
- 6:23anymore. What are they?
- 6:24They're malls with sand. Wow.
- 6:26Malls with sand. That's vivid.
- 6:28It's a perfect description. It's high density commercial
- 6:31chaos that just happens to be next to the ocean.
- 6:34So understanding the geography is not just a good idea, it's
- 6:38essential. This north-south divide is
- 6:40everything. It dictates your entire trip.
- 6:42The North is high energy, high consumption.
- 6:46That's where you're going to hear the techno base at 4:00 in
- 6:48the morning. The South, though, That's where
- 6:50the Silence lives. Where it lives, you have to go
- 6:52South to find anything that even resembles sanctuary.
- 6:56The roads might be worse, the infrastructure is a bit
- 6:59patchier, but the trade off is real, tangible, quiet.
- 7:04It's non negotiable. And we also need to totally
- 7:06reframe the wildlife expectation because when people hear India
- 7:09wildlife, their brain goes to one place.
- 7:12Tigers. The Bengal tiger, maybe
- 7:15elephants? Right.
- 7:16And the reality? The reality is, while tigers do
- 7:19exist in the Sadre ranges bordering Goa, you the traveler
- 7:23are not going to see one. It's incredibly rare.
- 7:26It's a multi day trek with a ton of luck.
- 7:29Don't plan your trip around it. So what should you be looking
- 7:31for? You got to get more nuanced,
- 7:33focus on the incredible bird life.
- 7:36The reptiles are fascinating and you might see large mammals like
- 7:39the Indian bison, the Gower. So it's not an African safari.
- 7:42Not even close. This is a wet, dense, humid
- 7:46jungle experience. Ewing wildlife here takes
- 7:49patience, and, frankly, it takes a guide.
- 7:52But here's the value Even without the tigers, the region
- 7:55is ecologically priceless. Goa is inside the Western Ghats,
- 7:59which is a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot.
- 8:02It predates the Himalayas. I mean, the sheer density of
- 8:05life here is staggering. So that's the mental shift you
- 8:08have to change your goal from spotting big cats to immersing
- 8:12in a living forest. Exactly.
- 8:14If you can do that, you unlock the real magic.
- 8:16The sounds, the smells, the constant hum of off the jungle.
- 8:19It's a much deeper, more rewarding experience.
- 8:21It's magical, but you have to respect that you're in a living,
- 8:24breathing and very wet environment.
- 8:26OK, let's get into the nitty gritty.
- 8:29Segment 2 Arrival and your immediate impressions.
- 8:33Because getting to go isn't as simple as it used to be.
- 8:36You have a choice of airports now, and making the wrong one
- 8:39can just ruin your trip from the start.
- 8:41Oh, it can kill your budget and your schedule instantly.
- 8:44So you're landing at either the old airport Dabelim, which is
- 8:48Goi, or the brand new one Mopa Gox.
- 8:51And for our listener, the one seeking sanctuary.
- 8:53The advice is crucial if you are heading South for that quiet
- 8:57vibe, you have to stick to Dabelim Goi, period.
- 9:01Why is that so important? Dabelim is located pretty much
- 9:04in the middle of the state, so getting anywhere is relatively
- 9:07manageable. Mopa on the other hand, yes,
- 9:10it's shiny and new, but it's in the far, far north of Goa.
- 9:13Like almost in the next state over.
- 9:15Practically. So if you land at Mopa and your
- 9:17hotel is down in, say, Palolam or a Gonda in the South, you are
- 9:21looking at a brutal taxi ride. How long?
- 9:243-4 hours, maybe longer with traffic.
- 9:26And that ride can easily cost you more than your flight did.
- 9:28We're talking ₹4000, maybe more. It completely defeats the
- 9:32purpose. So dabblem Only dabblem for the
- 9:35South. OK, so you've landed at the
- 9:37Wright airport. The 1st 24 hours are still what
- 9:40you'd call a sensory assault. For sure it starts the second
- 9:43you walk out of the terminal. First the humidity.
- 9:46It hits you like a wet towel. It's heavy, it's instant, you
- 9:50are sweating in minutes. And then comes the conflict.
- 9:52The immediate conflict? You walk outside and you are
- 9:55just swarmed, assaulted by the taxi union.
- 9:58This isn't just a line of cabs, it's an organized system that
- 10:01controls all the transport. And this is so important to
- 10:04understand. Uber and Ola are basically
- 10:06banned in Goa. The local taxi unions have
- 10:09fought them two the nail to protect their monopoly on
- 10:12pricing. So your very first impression of
- 10:14this tranquil place after a long flight is probably going to be a
- 10:17tense, aggressive argument about money.
- 10:20Not a great start. Not at all.
- 10:22But once you get through that and you're finally in the car,
- 10:26this is where the romance begins.
- 10:28Wow. The drive, the drive through the
- 10:30villages. The golden hour light is
- 10:32filtering through the palm trees.
- 10:33You start seeing those beautiful crumbling Portuguese villas
- 10:38painted in pastel yellow and pale blue.
- 10:41And the smell. Yeah, you have to talk about the
- 10:43smell. The smell of Goa is so specific.
- 10:45It's this mix of burning leaves from the roadside and fish Curry
- 10:50cooking somewhere and drying coconut and this wet earthy
- 10:53smell from the red soil. That's when you know you've
- 10:56arrive somewhere unique. It's at 450 years of Portuguese
- 11:00history. You see it in the architecture
- 11:02of the chapels. It feels different from the rest
- 11:04of India. Absolutely, but that beauty is
- 11:07always kind of negotiating with danger, especially on the roads.
- 11:10The roads are terrifying. Let's be honest.
- 11:13They're dangerously narrow. They were not built for the
- 11:15amount of traffic they have now. And the ultimate hazard is the
- 11:19cows. The cows just sitting there in
- 11:22the middle of a blind corner. Completely unbothered.
- 11:25They are sacred. Nobody can move them and they
- 11:28will not move for you. Your driver has to be on high
- 11:30alert constantly. And then there are the other
- 11:32tourists. You see them everywhere.
- 11:33Foreigners on scooters, no shirt, no helmet, weaving
- 11:37through traffic. There are accidents waiting to
- 11:39happen. The risk of injury is genuinely
- 11:41high if you're not careful. But if you've done your
- 11:43homework, you've gone S to Uganda or Pelolum, you drop your
- 11:48bags, that initial stress just melts away.
- 11:51It really does. You walk out to the water.
- 11:53The Arabian Sea is warm. It's a darker, churning blue,
- 11:57not that Maldives turquoise, but it's powerful and beautiful.
- 12:00And the backdrop is just coconut palms leaning over the sand, no
- 12:03high rises. And that's the moment of peace.
- 12:05You sit down at a beach shack, you order your first Kingfisher
- 12:09beer, and you watch that sunset. That moment.
- 12:12As one source put it, it just resets your nervous system.
- 12:15That's why you came. That's it.
- 12:16But yeah, there's a reality check of.
- 12:18Course there is. That piece is frequently
- 12:20interrupted by daily power cuts, so that magical sunset beer
- 12:24might turn into a mandatory candlelight dinner.
- 12:27Whether you planned it or not, it's just part of the charm.
- 12:32All right, let's talk money, Segment 3, costs and value.
- 12:36But because we've established Goa isn't cheap anymore and we
- 12:38need to get into the why. And the basic premise for this
- 12:41trip, for a sanctuary trip is simple.
- 12:44Silence is the most expensive thing you can buy in modern
- 12:46India. That's it exactly.
- 12:47You are paying a premium to get away from the noise, the crowds,
- 12:51the traffic. This isn't a party budget, it's
- 12:53a sanctuary budget. So we've broken it down into 3
- 12:55bands using daily U.S. dollar estimates to give you a clear
- 12:59idea of what you're paying for. Let's start with the Backpacker
- 13:02Budget Band. OK, this is the gritty
- 13:04experience. For accommodation you're looking
- 13:07at maybe a simple hostel or a very basic fan only garden Hut a
- 13:11little back from the beach. 10 to $20 a night.
- 13:14And you will be hot. That mosquito net is not
- 13:17optional. Not at all for food.
- 13:19You're living on local phallus. That's the traditional platter
- 13:21of rice, bread, curries. Still incredibly cheap.
- 13:25Two or three bucks a meal. Transport is a rented scooter,
- 13:28maybe an older 1/4 to $6 a day, and your activities are
- 13:33basically free. Hiking.
- 13:34Hanging out on the beach. Right.
- 13:36So your daily total for this very authentic but very gritty
- 13:40and no AC experience is going to be around 25 to $35 a day.
- 13:44It's doable, but you're constantly battling the
- 13:46elements. OK, Next up, the mid range
- 13:49sanctuary seeker. This is our listener.
- 13:51This is the sweet spot. This is the sweet spot for
- 13:54accommodation. You're now getting an AC
- 13:56cottage, maybe second row from the beach, or a beautiful
- 13:59boutique guest house. 50 to $90.00 a night.
- 14:03You're paying for the air conditioning and Peace of Mind.
- 14:05And food shifts to the beach shacks.
- 14:08That whole grilled fish you've been dreaming of?
- 14:09Exactly. A whole snapper or kingfish will
- 14:12run you 10 to $15. Cocktails are about 5 bucks and
- 14:16you can afford to invest in activities.
- 14:18Like that guided nature walk you said was so essential.
- 14:21That's the $120.00 for a guide. Maybe a dolphin watching boat
- 14:25trip. So your daily total here is 80
- 14:28to $120.00 a day. This is the band that buys you
- 14:31comfort, peace, and the guidance to actually enjoy the sanctuary
- 14:35you came for. All right, finally, the luxury
- 14:37high end. This is all about exclusivity.
- 14:39We're talking the Taj Exotica, the Lila Private Villas in
- 14:44Asago. You're starting at $300 a night
- 14:46and it goes way up from there. And what's interesting is how
- 14:49wildlife becomes a luxury product here.
- 14:51Totally. A dedicated eco lodge like
- 14:54Wilderness right inside the Sanctuary area can run you 150
- 14:58to $200 a night. But that price includes your
- 15:01meals, your trekking and a dedicated naturalist.
- 15:04It maximizes your chances of seeing something amazing.
- 15:07At this level, your daily total is easily $500 plus a day.
- 15:11Easy. OK, we have to talk about the
- 15:14hidden costs, the hidden view tax and the insane beach shack
- 15:17inflation. Yeah, this is a huge deal.
- 15:19The prices in the beach shacks have basically doubled in the
- 15:22last three years. The easiest example is beer.
- 15:24A Kingfisher used to be about ₹80.
- 15:26So a dollar right now. Now in any popular shack, it's
- 15:29250 rupees, $3. That's a 200% increase.
- 15:32And that's because you're paying a massive premium to have your
- 15:35feet in the sand with that sunset.
- 15:36View exactly. But here's the fix.
- 15:39This is the crucial money saving tip if you just walk 100 meters
- 15:42inland to the little family run places on the main road where
- 15:45locals eat. The prices plummet.
- 15:47By 40% immediately. More authentic food for way less
- 15:50money. It's a no brainer.
- 15:51What about investing in the wildlife part of the trip?
- 15:54So the entry fees to the sanctuaries themselves are
- 15:57nominal, like $2.00 access is cheap.
- 15:59But the value is low. The value is 0.
- 16:01If you go alone, you'll just, as one source put it, stare at a
- 16:05wall of trees for four hours. You won't know what you're
- 16:08looking at. So the required investment is
- 16:10the guide. It's hiring a local naturalist
- 16:12for a morning. It'll cost you maybe 30 to $50.
- 16:15It sounds expensive, but it transforms a frustrating walk
- 16:18into a real experience where you actually see the biodiversity.
- 16:21It's money well spent. So the final value verdict.
- 16:25Goa is no longer cheap compared to places like Vietnam or
- 16:28Thailand. It's firmly in the moderate
- 16:31category now. You get good value on
- 16:34accommodation in the mid range, terrible value on transport and
- 16:37decent value on food if you use that 100m rule all.
- 16:40Right. This is where where we give you
- 16:41the Intel to maintain that Zeus Gad vibe Segment 4 logistics and
- 16:46planning traps because this is where people lose their cool,
- 16:50their money and their peace. Oh.
- 16:51Instantly the vibe dies the second you're arguing with a
- 16:54taxi driver on the side of a dusty Rd.
- 16:56So let's start with the big one trap #1 the taxi mafia and the
- 17:01constant negotiation battle. We've mentioned this but it's
- 17:03the biggest daily hassle. Uber and Ola are banned so the
- 17:07local union has total control and they will quote you insane
- 17:11prices ₹3000 for a trip that should be 800.
- 17:16So what's the fix? How do you fight back?
- 17:18It's a two-part strategy. First you download the
- 17:20government backed app called Go Miles.
- 17:23Now it works inconsistently. Sometimes you'll get a driver,
- 17:26sometimes you won't. But even if it fails, it gives
- 17:28you the official fair price for that route.
- 17:31So you use that as your baseline for negotiation?
- 17:33Exactly that becomes your non negotiable price when you talk
- 17:36to the street taxis and never ever get enough car without
- 17:40agreeing on the price first as a backup pre booked long trips
- 17:44through your hotel. Smart OK trap #2 the scooter
- 17:48police checkpoint scam. This is so common they set up
- 17:51checkpoints, new tourist spots are the main bridges and their
- 17:54target is always the same tiaras on rented scooters.
- 17:57So what's the fix here? What do you need to have?
- 17:59Legally you need an international driving permit, an
- 18:02IDP with a specific motorcycle endorsement.
- 18:05Your standard US or UK license is not enough, even if the
- 18:09rental guy says it is. And they will say it is.
- 18:11They will. So if you get stopped first,
- 18:15always wear a helmet. Be calm, be polite.
- 18:18They will probably find some reason to fine you and that fine
- 18:22is going to be a demand for cash on the spot.
- 18:24It's a bribe. It's a bribe 500 to ₹1000 and
- 18:28honestly the advice is to just view it as a convenience fee.
- 18:31If you don't have the right paperwork, it's better than
- 18:33getting your scooter impounded. Right.
- 18:35OK trap #3 this one's for our wildlife seekers.
- 18:38Incorrect sanctuary timing. This is a mission killer.
- 18:41If you go to a wildlife sanctuary in the middle of the
- 18:43day, from say, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, it's too hot.
- 18:47It's way too hot. Animals are all sleeping.
- 18:49You'll just have a hot, sweaty, disappointing walk through a
- 18:52silent forest. So the fix is an early start.
- 18:54A very early start. You have to be up at 5:30 AM.
- 18:57You need to be at the gates of Kodigaw or Mullum right at
- 19:00sunrise before 6:30. That's when the jungle is
- 19:03active, when you see the birds, the deer, the bison.
- 19:05And seasonal timing is crucial, too.
- 19:07Absolutely avoid it's unbearably hot and avoid the peak monsoon
- 19:12from June to August because the sanctuaries might be closed due
- 19:15to landslides. Let's talk about connectivity
- 19:17and cash. Getting a local SIM card sounds
- 19:20like a nightmare. It's a bureaucratic mess.
- 19:22Passport photos, visa copies waiting for it to be activated.
- 19:25Just skip it. So what's the fix?
- 19:27Get an E SIM before you land. Use a service like airy low.
- 19:30You have data the second you touchdown.
- 19:32But, and this is critical, download offline maps, Google
- 19:36Maps Maps dot me self-service in the Deep South in the jungle is
- 19:39terrible. And cash.
- 19:41The ATMs in the remote areas run out of money on the weekends all
- 19:44the time, so carry stacks of ₹500 notes.
- 19:47Get your cash in the bigger towns or at the airport.
- 19:49Last one, packing the humidity is a killer.
- 19:53It is. Forget cotton, it will never
- 19:55ever dry. You need quick, dry synthetic
- 19:57clothing, and for insect protection you need the real
- 20:00deal. Chemical D Eat.
- 20:01Chemical D, not the natural citronella stuff.
- 20:04There is a real risk of dengue in the jungle areas.
- 20:08You have to take it seriously, especially around dawn and dusk.
- 20:13OK, let's move into segment 5, Safety and wildlife hazards.
- 20:17Because we need to balance the annoying scams with the actual
- 20:21physical dangers. Let's start with personal
- 20:23safety, especially for women travelers.
- 20:25Generally speaking, the sources all agree that Goa is much safer
- 20:28than say, North India, Delhi, Rajasthan.
- 20:32The local Goen culture is more laid back and respectful of
- 20:35tourists. But the risk factor is tied
- 20:37directly to that north-south divide again.
- 20:39It is the huge influx of domestic male tourists who come
- 20:42specifically to party in North Goa.
- 20:44In Baga and Kalengut. It creates a different,
- 20:47sometimes intimidating atmosphere.
- 20:49We're talking drunk groups staring harassment on the
- 20:52beaches at night. Exactly.
- 20:53It's a direct result of that high energy, high consumption
- 20:56zone. Yeah.
- 20:56So the fix once again is geographic.
- 20:59Stay South. Halamam, Aganda Patnam.
- 21:01Yeah, the vibe there is just completely different.
- 21:03It's families, it's couples, it's solo travelers looking for
- 21:06quiet if you're safe to walk around at night.
- 21:08What about the common scams aside from the taxi issue?
- 21:12They're mostly minor nuisances. You'll see air cleaners on the
- 21:15beach and gemstone sellers. The advice is just walk away,
- 21:20don't engage firmly say no and keep moving.
- 21:23OK, but the health risk that affects everyone go belly.
- 21:26It's real, and it's almost always from the water or ice.
- 21:29And this isn't about having a weak stomach, this is about
- 21:32infrastructure. It is the rule has to be
- 21:35absolute. You only drink sealed bottled
- 21:38water and you only brush your teeth with bottled water.
- 21:42Do not even rinse your mouth with tap water.
- 21:44It's not worth the risk. Now ocean safety.
- 21:46This is a life and death thing people ignore.
- 21:48They do. The Arabian Sea is not a gentle
- 21:51swimming pool. It has powerful RIP currents,
- 21:53especially near the river mouths.
- 21:55And tourists drown every year. Every single year, usually
- 21:58because they're swimming drunk or they ignore the red flags.
- 22:01The lifeguard's whistles are not a suggestion.
- 22:03If they tell you to get out of the water, you get out
- 22:05immediately. OK, let's talk about the real
- 22:07wildlife hazards, the stuff you can encounter right outside your
- 22:11Hut. First, stray dogs.
- 22:14They are everywhere. Most are friendly, but at night
- 22:17packs on the beach can get territorial and aggressive.
- 22:20The advice is not to feed them. Ryan right, Because if you do,
- 22:23they sort of adopt you and then they'll get into fights with
- 22:25other dogs to protect you, which just escalates the whole
- 22:28situation. And the most serious warning for
- 22:30anyone staying near the jungle? Snakes, cobras and crates are
- 22:34common, they're native, and they are incredibly dangerous.
- 22:38So what are the precautions? Two strict rules.
- 22:40One, always shake out your shoes before you put them on every
- 22:44single time a snake or a scorpion might be sheltering
- 22:47inside. Never walk in high grass or on
- 22:50unlit paths at night without a powerful flashlight.
- 22:53It's a simple thing that can literally save your life.
- 22:56This is a truly wild place and you have to respect that.
- 22:59All right, let's pivot to the experience itself.
- 23:01We've talked about the hassles, the cost, the risks.
- 23:04The big question is, was the reward worth all that effort?
- 23:09Well, before we get to the best moments, we have to address the
- 23:12biggest disappointment that came up in every single source,
- 23:15because it really hits that sanctuary mission hard.
- 23:18And that's the trash problem. Yeah, we called it heartbreaking
- 23:21at the start. Let's get into why it's so bad.
- 23:24It's really just a case of infrastructure being completely
- 23:27overwhelmed. The number of tourists and
- 23:28residents has exploded, but the waste management systems haven't
- 23:32kept up. So you have overflowing
- 23:34landfills, illegal dumping on the roadsides.
- 23:37And all that plastic washing up on the beaches.
- 23:39Exactly. And it just creates this
- 23:41constant jarring tension. You can be in the most beautiful
- 23:46secluded Cove and you'll find a pile of plastic bottles and
- 23:49wrappers. It shatters that illusion of a
- 23:52pristine paradise. The Psychological the impact of
- 23:54seeing that is huge. It is, and my personal big
- 23:57disappointment was directly related to that it was visiting
- 24:00Deus Sagar Falls. Which are supposed to be
- 24:02incredible. The falls themselves are
- 24:04majestic, a huge, powerful cascade, but the experience of
- 24:08getting there and being there was just awful.
- 24:11Tourist conveyor belt. A total conveyor belt.
- 24:14The Jeep safari to get there is chaotic and rushed.
- 24:17They make you wear these gross, mildewy life jackets and you get
- 24:21exactly 15 minutes at the falls and when you look closely you
- 24:24see plastic bottles wedged in the rocks.
- 24:27It felt like a rundown amusement park ride, not a natural wonder.
- 24:32My big disappointment was a lesson in just how fast the
- 24:35development is happening. I booked what was advertised as
- 24:38a luxury villa in the South. The photos online were perfect.
- 24:42And the reality? The reality was it was right
- 24:44next to a massive construction site, Jackhammers from 8:00 AM
- 24:47to 6:00 PM. It was not in the pictures.
- 24:50The construction view, it's a real and growing problem in Goa.
- 24:53Yeah, so the essential advice from my mistake is use Google
- 24:57Maps satellite view before you book anything.
- 24:59Zoom in, look for those big dirt patches next to your property.
- 25:02Those are future construction sites and they will ruin your
- 25:04sanctuary. A crucial tip?
- 25:06OK, but let's talk about the successes, the moments that made
- 25:08it all worth it. What was your best moment?
- 25:11Mine was all about logistics and food, finding something really
- 25:13authentic. I found this tiny little local
- 25:16bakery in a village called Lutelem in the old Portuguese
- 25:20part of Goa. Away from the coast.
- 25:22Way away about fresh poi, which is this incredible go and bread
- 25:26and some going chorizo sausages straight from the smoker.
- 25:29The whole thing cost maybe $0.50 and I just sat on this old
- 25:32Portuguese bridge eating this perfect simple meal, watching
- 25:36the river flow by. Total peace.
- 25:40That sounds amazing. My best moment was pure wildlife
- 25:43magic. I was in Pelolum and I followed
- 25:46our own advice. I rented a kayak at 6:00 AM.
- 25:48The water was like glass. Perfect timing it.
- 25:51Was everything. I paddled out around this little
- 25:53island totally alone, and then right in front of me the water
- 25:56broke. It was a pot of 6 humpback
- 25:58dolphins just gliding by my kayak.
- 26:01No tour boat engine noise, no other people, just me and them
- 26:04in the sunrise. That feeling of quiet
- 26:06connection. That was the sanctuary I was
- 26:08fighting for. It's still there, you just have
- 26:10to work for it. OK, so if all the hassles, the
- 26:12traffic, the trash, the inflation, if that makes Goa
- 26:16feel like too much work, the sources do offer some great
- 26:19alternatives. Yeah, alternative number one is
- 26:21Gokarna in the next state, Karnataka.
- 26:23It's literally the next town South of Goa's border.
- 26:25And everyone says this is what Goa was like 20 years ago.
- 26:28The pros are cleaner beaches, it's more spiritual, and it's
- 26:31much cheaper. The cons are no real alcohol
- 26:35scene and the accommodation is very basic.
- 26:37Right alternative number 2 is the Andaman Islands.
- 26:40This is for if your absolute number one priority is pristine
- 26:43beaches and diving. The pros Turquoise water,
- 26:47untouched jungle. The cons?
- 26:49It's a pain to get to, there's basically no Internet and it
- 26:52costs about 30% more than Goa. It's truly remote.
- 26:54And our final advice, if you are going to go do the combo
- 26:57itinerary, don't try to do beach and wildlife from the same
- 27:00place. Split the trip three days in the
- 27:03Deep South Uganda, Patten them for the beach and the sunsets,
- 27:07then move inland for three days to an eco lodge in the
- 27:10Chorlagots for the real immersive jungle experience.
- 27:13OK, let's bring it all home. Segment 7 The Final Verdicts
- 27:18We've built our deep dive matrix to give you a clear answer on
- 27:21whether modern Goa is right for you based on your travel style.
- 27:24Let's start with the backpacker. What's the verdict?
- 27:26The verdict is yes, conditionally a big condition.
- 27:30You have to avoid Baga and Kalengut like the plague.
- 27:34Yeah, go to Anjuna or Aram Bowl for the classic vibes.
- 27:37Or honestly, just skip down to Gokarna.
- 27:40Go is getting too expensive for the true hardcore budget
- 27:43traveler. OK, what about the mid range
- 27:44couple or solo sanctuary seeker? This is the bullseye and
- 27:48absolutely yes, this is who Modern Go is perfect for.
- 27:51You have the budget for a comfortable AC room, a decent
- 27:54scooter, you can stay in a beautiful heritage villa in the
- 27:56South, and you can afford that crucial nature guide.
- 27:59It's the perfect mix of adventure, romance and comfort.
- 28:03Next up, the family trip. The verdict here is yes, but
- 28:06stay in a resort. Don't try to wing it with kids,
- 28:09the logistics are too stressful. Book a proper resort with a pool
- 28:12in South go of Arka Kavalasam where the beaches are flat and
- 28:15safe. You're paying a premium for the
- 28:17stress to be removed. And finally, the luxury
- 28:20traveler. For them it's yes if you go
- 28:22niche you can't just book a big 5 star hotel and expect peace.
- 28:26You have to use your money to buy exclusion.
- 28:29We're talking private yacht charters renting fully staffed
- 28:32private mansions. Money can buy sanctuary and go
- 28:35up, but only in these very exclusive gated settings.
- 28:38So the overall score for our Mission Beach Sanctuary
- 28:41wildlife? OK, my score focusing purely on
- 28:44the experience in the Magic is an 8.5 out of 10.
- 28:47But it comes with a massive condition.
- 28:50You have to wake up for sunrise. The soul of Goa, the quiet, the
- 28:53magic, it all happens between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
- 28:56If you sleep in, you miss it. You're just left with the
- 28:59traffic in the crowds. That's a great point.
- 29:01My score focusing on the logistics and the value for
- 29:04money is a bit lower. I'd say a 7.5 out of 10.
- 29:08The sanctuary is there but it's struggling against the
- 29:10development and the trash and the wildlife part requires too
- 29:13much specific effort and spending to be a guarantee.
- 29:16The reward is huge, but the effort is steep.
- 29:19And for timing, best weather but highest prices are November to
- 29:22February. The best value is the shoulder
- 29:24season, so October or March, great weather, fewer crowds.
- 29:28And the times to absolutely avoid are May for the insane
- 29:32heat and June through August for the heavy monsoon #tag outro.
- 29:38So our final take away for you, the listener, is to remember
- 29:40what we said at the start, Susagad is not something you can
- 29:44buy. It's not an amenity on a booking
- 29:46website. No, it's a pace.
- 29:48It's a mindset you have to consciously adopt.
- 29:50You have to slow down. You have to leave room in your
- 29:52schedule for the unexpected, for the power to go out for a random
- 29:56conversation. If your schedule is too packed,
- 29:58you'll just get frustrated and you'll miss the whole point.
- 30:01And that leads us to our final provocative thought for you to
- 30:04take with you. Looking at this whole struggle
- 30:06between the old Goa and the new Goa, the question we're left
- 30:09with is this. Can Sue Skadgad, this deep
- 30:12philosophy of slow living actually survive the influx of
- 30:15high speed, high consumption tourism?
- 30:17Or is it the very act of so many people fighting to find it now
- 30:21destroying the thing itself? A tough question, but on a more
- 30:24practical note, a final reminder please, before you get on the
- 30:27plane, download those offline map.
- 30:29And pack the Det. Watch your wallet.
- 30:31Watch your step. Safe travels, we really hope you
- 30:34find your sanctuary in the South.
