- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Hello, this is Jamie Bridges, and thank you so much for joining us for this week's podcast.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: All of our services are inspired and built straight from the Bible.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Let's get into this week's message recorded at Life Community Church.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: Man, it is an honor to be here and uh so thankful for Pastor Jamie and Kelly.
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: Can we give it up for the lead pastors here of this church?
- 0:26SPEAKER_03: They're amazing.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: Um this is my first time getting to meet Pastor Jamie and Kelly.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: And uh a big reason why I'm here is because um I travel all over the United States of America.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: I preach all over the U.S.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: And um I don't just travel and preach, but I have a big heart to raise up the next generation of those who feel called to preach and preach the gospel.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: And there's a young man out of this church that has been with me the last seven months, traveling around the U.S.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: preaching with me.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Hayes, would you Hayes, would you stand up?
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Would y'all give it up for Hayes?
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Um and so a big a big reason why I'm preaching today is because this guy named Hayes was like, you need to come preach for my church.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Let me ask my pastor.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: So last night, Pastor Jamie brings me to this soccer game, this city game, and I immediately make it known to all the fans that I'm from Minnesota.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: I just make it all known right away.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: And every time they scored a goal, they would just rub it in my face.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Like, just look right at me and rub it in my face.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: So I have been baptized into St.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Louis culture, and on the drive home, I told Pastor, I said, Pastor, thanks for driving me through a St.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Louis.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Thanks for taking me to the game.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: I just feel I love this place.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: This place is awesome.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: I hope I get to come back, okay?
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: I hope I get to come back.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: But uh, no, for real, it's an honor, an honor to be here, and I'm so excited.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, but here's what I need everybody to do, okay?
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: You're gonna come up to service after and you're gonna thank me for this.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: I need everybody to do this.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: You're gonna love this.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: On the count of three, I need everybody to clap above your head, okay, on the count of three.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Everybody put your hands out to the side like this.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Everybody, you're gonna love this, okay?
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: On the count of three.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: One, two, three.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: One, two, three, one, two, three.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: All right, good.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: You can put up that first picture.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Congratulations, because you are all Minnesota Vikings fans.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Congratulations.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: You can put that photo up.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: I think we got a photo.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: I just wanted to make sure I was baptized in St.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Louis culture.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Might as well baptize you in Minnesota culture.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Might as well get you some Minnesota culture.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I I don't know.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: I'm a born and raised Minnesota boy, okay?
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: And we do something called the Skull Clap, and when they take away the St.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Louis Rams from me, I was like, I gotta get them a team to cheer for.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Let's get him the Vikings.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: Let's get him the Vikings.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Let's just show them the way.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: And uh, if you're a Packer fan over here, like this guy, uh, I don't know where he is, he's over there.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, see, there's always one.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: There's always one, they're always somewhere.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: He's saying go pack over here.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: Uh if you're still upset at me about being a Vikings fan, this is a picture of my wife Steph.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: She's a small town Wisconsin girl.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: She is a Packer fan.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: I'm a Viking fan.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Uh we celebrate 15 years of marriage coming up here.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: And uh that's my wife Steph.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: We met at North Central University, and um I always uh show a picture of my family because um we have a travel ministry in the last nine years we've been traveling, and there is no travel ministry without my wife, a wife who sends me and supports me.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: And this is a baby picture, a baby picture of baby Everly.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: I see a baby up there.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, but this is a baby picture of Everly, baby Ev.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: And my wife's a worship leader, and she said, Micah, can you dress her baby and get her ready for church?
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: And um, I've never I've never dressed a baby in my life.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: I have no idea how to do that.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: And my wife's like, she left clothes out for it, so I'm like, that's fine, just dress the thing and you're fine.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Like it's gonna be fine.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: So I dress my baby like that.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: I bring her to church, and there's this group of moms staring at me in the church lobby, and I know why they're staring at me, because she's cute, and I did a good job.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: I did a good job dressing that thing.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: And so I bring the baby to church, and this mom, this these group of moms, they walk up to me in a really Minnesota passive-aggressive way.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: They just walk up to me and they go, Micah, did you um did you dress your baby this morning?
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: I said, I sure did, and I did a good job, didn't I?
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: And these moms, they go, Micah, we just we need to let you know something.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: I said, Yeah, what's up?
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: They go, when you dress a baby, the first thing you do is put on the onesie and then you put on the pants, okay?
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: So here's the deal.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: If you're a man in the audience and you saw nothing wrong with that photo, well, neither did I!
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Neither did I! Does the baby have pants on it?
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah! Is the baby warm?
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah! And the baby's just fine! Thank you!
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: This is an updated picture of Everly.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: She dresses herself now.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: She's in fourth grade.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Here's an updated photo.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: There she is.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Um, thank God she can dress herself.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: I did not dress her, she did.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: And uh, that's Ev.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: She's in uh fourth grade, she's 10 years old, and you can probably do the math.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: We've been traveling for nine years as a family, a family travel ministry.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: We've stayed in all the hotels, all the airplanes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: We've preached in 48 of the 50 states across America.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: God's been so faithful to us, and you can do the math.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Um, our kids only know a dad and mom that travel, they don't know anything else.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: And um, in the summertime, we're at summer camps and we stay in moldy campground rooms and get sick from the mold, and it's awesome.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: We love it.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is a picture of our boy.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: His name is Malachi David.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: He is in second grade, and uh I just love my family so much, and I always show them everywhere I travel because uh they are the best.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: There's no travel ministry without a family who sends me.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: Um if you'll notice, my wife and kids actually aren't here today.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Um, but I brought my team with, and they'll be preaching this weekend.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: I'm preaching tonight for the youth.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: But if the team could stand, this is a team of college kids that I'm investing in, case you can stand with them.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Uh these are the two guys, it's Caden and Hayes and Olivia and Gabby.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Can we give it up for them?
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: Um they're here this weekend ministering.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: And um all of them will have ministry someday, and it's so cool to invest in the next generation.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: The last thing I'll mention before I get into the message is I wrote my first ever book called Death to Life.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Death to Life.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: A picture of it's coming on the screen, and um, the reason why I titled it Death to Life is because I saw a lot of death at a young age.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: I come from brokenness, I come from a broken home.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: I watched my dad cheat on my mom with multiple women.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: I watched drug abuse, I watched alcohol abuse, and I watched my parents' marriage end in divorce after 17 years of marriage.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: I literally grew up in dysfunction.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: I have three younger sisters.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: I'm the oldest in my family.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Within one year of my dad leaving our family, my eight-year-old sister was diagnosed with stage four cancer and given a 20% chance to live.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: I just watched my dad walk out of my family and now I got an eight-year-old sister who's gonna die.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: I lived at a children's hospital for two years.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: When you live at a kid's hospital with all these other families that have cancer, uh, you get to know these families.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: And I went to more funerals as a teenage boy than most elderly people have been to in their entire lifetime.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: I watched so many kids die of cancer, and you must be thinking to yourself, why'd you title it death to life?
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: Why not just title it death?
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: There's so much.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: And the reason why I titled it death to life is because of this.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: It's because when you follow Jesus, death is never the final outcome.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: It's not, but when you follow Jesus, he will always move you from death to life.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: And so I wrote this book.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: It has two parts.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: It's the first part is the story of Lazarus being raised from death to life, interwoven with my story.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: The second part of the book is very practical.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Once Christ sets you free, how do you live free?
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: How do you stay free?
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: And so I have some copies out there in the lobby at a table.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: If you don't want one, it's okay.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: I still would love to shake your hand.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: I know I met probably three-fourths of you already, and I knew this was a friendly church because I came up to you and go, it's my first time here.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: And a lady named Kim grabbed my wrist and dragged me around.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: You're gonna love this place.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: And she introduced me to everyone, okay?
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Kim's right down here.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: She's shaking her head.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: If I lived here, don't worry.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: This would be my home church, and I'd be like Kim dragging people around.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: You gotta meet him and him and him.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: So, anyway, um, if you don't want a copy, that's okay.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: I still would love to give you a hug or a high five or a handshake or fist bump if you're a germaphobe.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: And um just say thanks for coming to church today.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: If you're ready for the word of God, say let's go.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: The title of today's message is titled Final Words.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Final Words.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: It was a beautiful summer night in Minnesota.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: It's about 70 degrees outside, the sun was setting, I was driving down the highway, I got my windows rolled down.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: I'm in the rural part of Minnesota.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Beautiful night.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: I got my music blasting, the smell of smokers and grills, people cooking late dinners, the smell of some bonfires of pine and cedar that fill the air.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: It's a pristine night.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: And I notice something that catches my eye as I'm driving 70 miles an hour down the highway, and over to the right in this field, a random field, is like a 55-year-old man wearing a full kilt and playing a bagpipe, okay?
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: Now, if you're not from Minnesota, us men, we don't for fun just go play bagpipes in a field and wear a kilt.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: We we don't do that, okay?
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: And so it piqued my interest.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: And here's what you don't know about me is my dad and I share a deep love for this instrument called the bagpipe.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: If you've never heard a bagpipe played before, when it's played correctly, it's one of the most beautiful, unique sounding instruments.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: When it's played incorrectly, it sounds like a flock of geese that are dying.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: It's really bad.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: So I'm driving down the highway, I see this guy playing a bagpipe.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: I'm like, this is uh this isn't normal.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: So I I pull over on the highway, I do a yui, I turn around and I go back on the highway just because I want to pull over to hear what this guy's doing.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: Well, what why is he doing this?
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: And so I pull off to the side of the road, I turn down my music because I want to hear what he's playing.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: The sun is setting, beautiful night, and I just hear this song coming from his instrument Amazing.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: How sweet the song, the savage like me.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: And I immediately think to pick up my phone and call my dad, because I know how much my dad would love this moment.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: So I call my dad, it goes to voicemail.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: I call my dad again, he goes to voicemail again.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: I just go, hey dad, I don't know where you are right now, but dad, you're not gonna believe it.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: It's like the most beautiful night in Minnesota.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: And dad, there's this guy playing a bagpipe.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: Dad, listen to what he's playing.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: I hang my phone out the window, I pull it back to my ear.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Dad, wherever you are tonight, I just want to know I'm thinking of you.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: I love you, and we'll talk soon.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: See ya, dad.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: And I hang up the phone, and little did I know, those would be the final words that my dad would ever hear me say to him.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: I found out later my dad was at a restaurant bar that night.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: He was with his girlfriend.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: My dad opened up a voicemail at the bar and heard amazing grace fill the foam.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: And my dad just starts weeping at the bar.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: My dad would get on a motorcycle a little bit after that.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Would end up dying in a motorcycle accident.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: And those would be the final words my dad would ever hear me tell.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: You know what's really humbling?
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: You know what's sobering is witnessing and realizing how fragile this life really is.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: That the person you love, people you love, family members you love could be here today and gone the next.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you've ever been invited to join a bedside of a family member.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you've ever got a phone call from families saying, hey, dad's got a few months to live.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you've ever sat next to the bedside of someone when they're in their final moments.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: One of the most sobering things any person could ever witness is watching someone that was once alive and then having their final moments here in this earth.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: And if we are allowed to someday, every single person in this room potentially will have some final words that they leave behind that they say.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: And I have a question for you will the final words that you and I leave behind to our wives, to our kids, to our loved ones, will they match a life that lived them?
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Or will they merely just be lip service where our kids and grandkids or those around us are rolling their eyes?
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Because here is what God has in mind for every single person who showed up in the room.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: What God had in mind for every man that walked into this room, what God had in mind for every woman and child that walked into this room is he had a life that was meant for you to live.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: A life that was meant to be lived to the full.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: John 10 says that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: But Jesus has come to bring life in life abundantly.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: What God had in mind for every single person was not a life that would be easy, would not be a life void of trials and temptations, but it would be a life marked by the full life that comes from Jesus Christ.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: And he has that in mind for every single one of you today.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: And my goal today is to teach you how to live a life that was well lived and full of his life.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: And I believe God's word gives us the blueprint on how we can do this.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: To live lives that matter, to live lives that count, that make a difference for eternity, that make an impact right here and right now.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: And to do that today, I want to open up scripture to some final words by the man named Joshua.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Joshua gives some final words before he dies.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: He's lived a well life.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: A lot of you might not know this, and that's okay.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: But do you realize when Joshua was asked to lead the Israelites into the promised land, he was 90 years old.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: 90.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: You know what that tells me?
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: If you still have breath in your lungs, God is not done with you yet.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: He's not done with you yet.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: He has a reason for you being here, he has a purpose for your very being.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: And some of you who are 90 in the room listening to that, you're like, oh dear Lord, don't ask me to lead people into the promised land.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: Let the young ones do that, let Hayes do that, please, God.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: He's got a plan for you.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: And then when we get to Joshua 24, do you realize this?
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: He's 110 years old, he's about to die, and he does what all of us would do.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: He tells people to get everyone.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: He's got some final words to say.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: And in Joshua 24, verse 1, it's coming on the screen if you don't have a Bible.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: It says this it says that then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: He summoned the elders, the leaders, the judges, the officials of Israel.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: They presented themselves before God.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: In other words, Joshua says, Get everybody.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: Gather everyone.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: I got something to say.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: It's when that family text hits the thread and says, Hey, Dad's in his final moments, get everyone.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: Dad wants to say some things to the family.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: There Joshua is in his old days.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: And you know what Joshua does for the next 10 to 12 verses?
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Joshua begins to tell everyone not his successes, not his accomplishment, not his 403B or 401k, not his stocks, not how much money he's made, not much how much wealth he's accrued that he's passing on, not the generational wealth he's leaving behind.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Joshua doesn't spend his final words talking about him.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: You know what Joshua does by spending his final words?
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: He gathers the family of God around the story of God.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: He gathers them all around what God's done.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: And if you want to know how to live life that's fully alive, if you want to know how to live a life that makes it count, number one is this if you're taking notes.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: We are called to gather ourselves and our families around the story of God.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: You can put up point number one, please.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: We're called to gather our families and ourselves around the story of God.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Did you know we can live one or two lives?
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: We can live lives building our empires, building our successes, building our resumes.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: And you know what that ends up turning to?
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: Dust and dirt.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Or we can build lives on the word of God.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: We can build lives based on God's story.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: We can build lives in our families' lives based on what the word of God says.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: There's two kinds of lives we can live.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: I don't know about you, but I want to be that grandpa around Thanksgiving and Christmas time, where all the grandkids are rolling their eyes at me saying, There's grandpa, he's gonna cry again.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: There he is, get ready.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: The food's hot.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Grandma made Grandma Steph made the food.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: It's hot.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: Can we just eat, Grandpa?
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: You're crying again.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: There he goes.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: You want to know what I want to do at every family get together, every birthday, every family gathering?
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: I want to tell my kids and my grandkids about the faithfulness of God and the story of God.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: You know what Joshua did in his final age, his final life?
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: He said this hey, God was the one who gave us this land.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: God was the one who delivered us, God was the one who provided for us.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: God was the one who showed up in our time of need.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: He's bragging not on his successes, he's bragging on the story of God and how powerful God is.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: And I don't know about you, but I want to continually tell my family how awesome God is, how powerful he is, how faithful he is.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: We might be weak as a family, but God is strong.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: We might sin as a family, but God is faithful.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: We might not have the faith to make it one day, but God is faithful to see us through.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: I don't know about you, but I want to always be bragging about how good God is, how faithful he is, and declare how amazing God is.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: That's what I want.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: And I want to be that grandpa who has a bald head in the church and has a walker, but has tons of candy in my pockets.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: And when all the kids roam by, I want to chuck candy on the floor, and all the kids will pick them up like little fish flocking to them.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: And I want all these gen alpha parents walking up to me being, sir, you're a nice man.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: Would you please stop feeding my kids candy every Sunday?
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: They're asking for the old man in church.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: And when you're not here, they leave sad, sir.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: And by the way, you can pay for my dentist bill because my kids' teeth are getting rotted by your candy every Sunday.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: I want to be that man that the older I get, the sweeter and more like Jesus I become.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: And I want to gather myself and my family around the story of God.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: You want to know how you make it?
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: You open up God's story every single day for yourself.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: I don't know about you, but every time I open the Bible, you know what happens to me?
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: My faith is built.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Every time I open up the word of God, know what I'm reminded?
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: I'm reminded of how weak I am, and it wasn't about me in the first place, it was all about him.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: When I open up the Bible, I'm reminded that there is nothing that can separate me from the love of God.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: When I open up the Bible, I'm reminded that I am more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: When I open up the Bible, I read that his grace is sufficient for me.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: When I open up the scripture, I realize that I am a victorer, I am a conqueror, I'm a co-heir with Christ, I'm adopted, I'm a son, I'm a child of God.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: When I open up the Bible, my faith is built.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: And I need this every day because if Jesus says this is daily bread, then I need daily bread for my soul.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: When I read the Bible, I'm corrected.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: When I read the Bible, I'm rebuked.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: When I read the Bible, I'm convicted of sin that can't stay in my life anymore.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: When I read the Bible, I'm encouraged and reminded of God's story.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: How do you do this?
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: I read one chapter in Psalms a day, one chapter in Proverbs a day, one chapter in the Gospels a day.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: Why do I read one chapter in Psalms a day?
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: Because I'm an emotional wreck of a human being.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Know what blows my mind?
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: Is in the middle of the Bible, God wrote something called grief literature, poetry.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Because you know what God would know about us is you and I would have emotions as human beings.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: And you know what Psalms does?
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Psalms validates the moment you want to rip someone's head off.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: It also validates the moment you're asking God, where are you?
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: It also validates the moment where someone wronged you, hurt you, and betrayed you.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: But it does not let you stay in your emotions because it puts your eyes back on the faithfulness of God that He's worth being worshipped even in the middle of grief.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: So I read one chapter of Psalms a day.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: If you're stuck in depression or anxiety, I would live in the Psalms.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: And then I read one chapter in Proverbs a day because a proverb a day keeps the stupid devil away.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: Right next to Psalms is what?
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: Proverbs.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: What is Proverbs?
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: Wisdom literature.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: What God saw fit is man, these people I made, they're all one step away from stupid.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: So you know what I'm gonna do?
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna create wisdom literature because they're gonna need godly wisdom just to make it one day to not do something stupid.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: So I read Proverbs and then I read one chapter in the gospels.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Because I always want to be near the words of Jesus.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: You know what happens when I read the Bible?
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: My faith is built.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: But you know what happens more than just me?
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: This picture is what it's all about for me.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Put up this next picture.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: That's what it's about.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: You know, they say as parents, you can tell kids what to do, but oftentimes kids don't always do what you tell them to do.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: But man, kids love to do what they see you do.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: They love to do what they see you do.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: And the reason why I read my Bible in front of my children is because someday, when they're at my funeral, they might say, you know what?
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: Dad wasn't the perfect dad.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: Dad didn't always get it right.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: But as kids who are older now, we realize I think why dad opened his Bible every day.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Because dad was trying to show us that the only way to make it was to gather your life around God's word, around God's story.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: We understand why dad opened the Bible every day.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: Because he needed it.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: It makes sense to us now.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: I pray that it's maybe not my sermons they remember.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: I pray it's my life of just trying to depend on God every day that they remember.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: How do you gather yourself around God's story for your life?
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: You open up your Bible every day for you.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: And not only that, but you make showing up to church a priority.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: If church is open, you're there.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: If church is happening Sunday, you're there.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: If it's open, you're there.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: My wife called me after I got done speaking at a church.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: And she said, Mike, you're not gonna believe what happened.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: I go, what?
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: She goes, I brought Malachi to kids' church, and he comes home from church, and when he gets home, he goes and grabs your irons, your clubs, your golf clubs, and he's taking your clubs and he's smashing rocks with your clubs.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: I go, what?
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Through the phone.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: He's doing what?
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: He goes, Yeah, he's just smashing rocks with your golf clubs.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: And I go, Did you tell him, like, what'd you do?
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: And she was yelling, Malachi, stop.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: Malachi, what are you doing?
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: And Malachi yells back to his mom.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: He goes, Mom, I'm thirsty.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: He was in kids' church heard about the story in the Bible where Moses strikes the rock and water gushes forth, and he gets he gets some drink, he gets thirsty and he gets water.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: So he thought, if Moses can do it, I can do it too.
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: I'm thirsty.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: He's smashing the rocks, thinking water's gonna come out.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Can I just tell you as a dad, I will gladly take destroyed golf clubs if it means my son is believing the God of the Bible and believing the God of the impossible.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: And every time you bring your kids to church, they're gathered around the story of God.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: Every time you show up to church on Sunday, Pastor Jamie is trying to gather you around the story of God.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Because every pastor knows this that if his church has a chance of making it, they don't need his words, they need the word of God.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: You know what the best thing a single mom ever did when the divorce happened?
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: Is she picked up a phone and she said, Where's the best church to bring my family to?
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: And we showed up to a church just like this.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: And my mom looked at her four kids and she goes, Kids, get out of the van, we're going to church.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: I said, Mom, this is a big church.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: I don't know anyone in this church.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: I'm staying in the van.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: Mom, you take the sisters and I'm staying right here.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: She goes, If you don't get out of the van, I'm gonna go find a man in the church and he's gonna drag your butt into church.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: I said, Mom, I'm staying right here.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: And my mom left with my three sisters and I learned a lesson that day.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: Don't ever mess with the crazy church moms.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: You know the ones that stare at you and they know all your sins?
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was my mom.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Sure enough, she comes out with like the largest bearded guy I've ever seen.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: I hide under the van seat, thinking she's gonna look in and be like, oh, he's a good boy.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: He went into church.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: I can't find him in there.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: No.
- 26:25SPEAKER_03: Mom's know when you're hiding.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: The guy opens the van door, he sticks his face under the seat, his beard is flowing in the wind, staring at me.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: He goes, son, you need to get out of the van, obey your mom, and get into church.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: And little did I know, that Sunday I ended up meeting one of my best friends who was the best man of my wedding.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: And I learned something that day.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: When I guest preach inside of churches across America, I don't view you as people I don't know.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: When I guest preach in churches across America, when I look at you, I see people that knocked on a single mom's door around Christmas time and dropped off envelopes full of cash so a single mom could buy Christmas presents for her kids.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: When I see you, I see men in the church who invited me over as a youth student so I could see what it looked like to have a family dinner and how a husband should treat a wife.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: When I see you, I see people who wrote checks to the church so a single mom could send four kids to summer camp because a single mom couldn't pay for four kids to go to camp.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: When I see you, I see people who wrote checks to the church to sponsor a youth kid to go on his first missions trip so he could know what a call of God looked on his life.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: And I get it now.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: I know why a single mom drug her four kids to church every Sunday because she knew this.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: She knew if her four kids ever had a chance at making it, it would mean dragging her kids to church.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: Because when her four kids got there, she knew that they would be gathered around the story of God.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: We're called to gather our families around his story, and then number two is this we're called to rid our homes of sin.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: After Joshua speaks for 12, 13 verses, in verse 14, it's coming on the screen.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: It says this He says, Now I want you to fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: Throw away the gods your ancestors worship beyond the Earthers River and in Egypt and serve the Lord.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: In other words, Joshua is saying this in light of everything God's done, in light of God's story, in light of how God gave you this, how God set you free, how God delivered you, in light of how good God is, don't stay in sin.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Get rid of it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: And the sin that your parents committed, the sin that your great-grandparents committed, the sin that your previous ancestors did, you don't have to follow the sins of your ancestors.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: In light of what God did, now throw it away.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: So I have a question for all of us What sin is in our homes right now that God has clearly said just get rid of it?
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Or let me put it a better way.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: What sin is in our devices right now that God has clearly said just get rid of it?
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: In light of God's grace for your life, in light of the blood of Jesus that covers and washes your sin away.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: What sin is ruling in your heart that he's just saying you don't have to follow it?
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: Do you realize my dad left my mom for another woman?
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: You know where my dad learned that from his dad, who left his wife for another woman.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: There is generational sin patterns and generational dysfunctions in my family line.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: Drugs, alcohol have been offered to me at a young age to sell, use, abuse at a young age.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: But according to scripture, you know what it tells me?
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: That because of what Jesus did on a cross, I don't need to follow in the sins of my ancestors.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: In light of what God's done for me, my family can have a different trajectory and a different life.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: And that is not just true for me, that is true for every single one of you that's walked in the room.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: You're like, No, it's too late for me.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: No, I've messed up too big.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: No, I'm 70 years old, I've already blown it with my family, I've already blown it in my life.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: I have good news for you.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: The blood of Jesus covers every single sin you've ever committed.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: And he wants to write a different story for your life.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Yes, even you at 70.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: It doesn't have to be the sins of your past, the sins of your ancestors.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: There can be a new pathway forward for your life.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: We're called the rid our homes of sin.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: How do we do this?
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: How do we live a life fully alive?
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: We gather our stories around his story, we gather our lives around his word, we rid our homes of sin.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: And my third and final point is this: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: Joshua says this.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: He says, But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you'll serve.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Whether the gods your ancestors serve beyond their fates, the gods the Amorites in whose land you're living, but as for me and my household, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: You know what Joshua is saying here?
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: The verb that's used in the Hebrew about serving God, it represented a past tense, a present tense, and a future tense.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: What Joshua is saying is this when I was a teenager in my past, I chose to serve God.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: I didn't wait for my parents' faith.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: In my present age at 110 years old, I'm gonna serve God in my future, no matter how much longer I have left to live, as for me and my house, we will serve God.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: What would it look like if every man in the church would step up and say, As for me in my house, we're gonna serve God?
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: What would it look like for men to step up and say, You know what?
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: As the head of my house, I'm gonna choose to serve God.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: What would it look like for every lady, every kid in the church, no matter how old you are, to say, as for me in my life, I'm gonna choose to serve God?
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: What would that look like?
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: What would that do in Columbia, Waterloo, and the town surrounding?
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: I think it would make a massive difference.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: You know, they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: You want to know where a single mom got it from?
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: This is a picture of my mom's dad.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: It's my grandpa.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: He just looks like a grandpa, doesn't he?
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: Like when you look at him, you just think that's a grandpa.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: When you just look at the guy, you're like, Oh, that's a cute grandpa.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's my grandpa.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: If you've ever seen the movie Up, if you've ever wondered where Russell got the grandpa from, yeah, my grandpa.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: They saw my grandpa, you're like, that's the one, that's the guy.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: Just put balloons in his hand, they'll fly away together in a house.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: What a great Pixar movie! Millions of people will love it.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if you've never seen Pixar movie up, just do yourself a favor, watch it tonight, and just let Pastor Jamie know what your thoughts were.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: My grandpa was a Lutheran minister in Missouri.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: He couldn't afford to take care of his eight kids.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: He had to leave the ministry, moved his family to the inner city of Minneapolis, attended a Lutheran church there, and my grandpa got kicked out of the Lutheran church, his wife, his eight kids, because the Holy Spirit showed up in a Bible study and began filling people with the Holy Spirit.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: My grandpa got kicked out.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: You know what my grandpa could have done that next Sunday?
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: See kids, you go to church, you just get hurt.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: See kids, you work for the Lord, you don't have enough money.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: See kids, you try to just follow what the Bible says, and you end up getting hurt by people.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: See kids, you go to church, you get hurt.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: No my grandpa did that next Sunday.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: He looked at his wife and eight children and said, Get ready for church, we're going to a different church down the road.
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: You know what my grandpa knew?
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: My grandpa knew this.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: People might fail you.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: Organizations might guard their territories, but God is faithful.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: And if God loves his church, we're gonna show up and be a part of his church.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Where do you think a single mom got it from?
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: Well, my grandpa was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he had a few moments to live.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: He called all eight of his children, all of his grandchildren, over to his bedside.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: My grandpa wanted to share some final words with his kids and family.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: When he looked at me, he said, Micah, come here.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: He had me stand in front of him with each grandchild.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: He wrote a Bible verse, a specific Bible verse for the grandchild.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: When he had me stand in front of him, this was the Bible verse that he prayed over me as his final words.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: It's Daniel chapter 12, it's on the screen.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: My grandpa did not know I would be an evangelist and see over 32,000 people give their life to Jesus and led to righteousness over the last nine years.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: My grandpa had no clue, but here's what my grandpa did know: he knew that if he had some final words, he would want to speak the words that would never pass away over his kids, his grandkids, the word of God.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: Can I just say, if you showed up to church today and you feel beat up, you feel like, man, I've blown it.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: Man, I'm I'm a horrible parent.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: Man, I'm just a bad dad.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: Man, there's no hope for me.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Man, there's no I just have to remind you of something.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: If that's your takeaway, then I have preached incorrectly to you.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: Let me leave you with this final thought.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: If Jesus could have a microphone today and speak some final words over your life, do you know what Jesus would say over you?
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: The final words of Christ on the cross, that most ultimate act of love, the most ultimate act of grace.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: When Jesus hung there, he spoke not just for the sins of the people present, but he spoke for the sins of those who were to come.
- 36:59SPEAKER_03: And he said, Father, forgive them.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: I think if Jesus could leave you with one last song, it might sound a little like amazing grace.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: How sweet the sound that saved like me.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: It's the amazing grace that saved a wretch like you and a wretch like me.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: It's the amazing grace that when you were blind made you see.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: If everyone could bow their heads, close their eyes, no one looking around.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: If you're here today, and you're saying, Micah, I need that amazing grace.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: Micah, I need that same love.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: I need that grace.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: Micah, I'm far from Jesus.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: Micah, I need to surrender to Jesus.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: If that's you on the count of three, I just want you to lift up a hand.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Say, I need that amazing grace for my life.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: One, two, three.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: You just put up a hand saying, Hey, I need that amazing grace.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: I need his grace to save me.
