Latest / Reformed Thinking / The Plunder of the Strong Man: Kingdom Power and the Logic of Sovereignty (Matthew 12:25–29)
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back. You are listening to REFORMED
- 0:02Thinking. Today we are opening a file that
- 0:06puts us right in the middle of a crime scene.
- 0:08Or maybe it's a courtroom or a battlefield.
- 0:11Honestly, it feels like all three at once.
- 0:13It's good to be back. And you're right about the
- 0:15setting. We're looking at Matthew chapter
- 0:1612, specifically verses 25 through 29.
- 0:20And this is not just some, you know, gentle story about
- 0:23healing. This is a a violent collision
- 0:26between two kingdoms. We're calling this deep dive the
- 0:29binding of the strongman, and I think it's worth setting the
- 0:32stage before we even get to verse 25.
- 0:34We have Jesus, we have the Pharisees, and we have this
- 0:37crowd that's just holding its breath.
- 0:39But the thing that kicks this whole situation off, the spark
- 0:43in the powder keg, is a very specific miracle.
- 0:46Yeah, the context is, I mean, it's everything here.
- 0:48Jesus has been moving through the region, teaching and
- 0:50healing. The pressure is building.
- 0:52The religious leaders are already, well, they're looking
- 0:54for a reason, any reason to arrest him or, you know, worse.
- 0:57And then this man is brought to Jesus.
- 1:00Right and Matthew describes him as demon oppressed, but he adds
- 1:032 very specific physical details.
- 1:06The man is blind and he is mute. Wow, that is a heavy
- 1:11combination. Blind and mute.
- 1:12It's terrifying if you really stop and think about.
- 1:14It I mean, just imagine the isolation.
- 1:17You can't see who's around you, you can't ask for help.
- 1:19You're completely locked inside your own head.
- 1:22And on top of that, you have this spiritual oppressor just
- 1:25locking you down. It's total darkness inside and
- 1:29out. A.
- 1:29Picture of complete helplessness.
- 1:31It is. It's the ultimate picture of
- 1:32helplessness. And I think that's exactly why
- 1:34Matthew includes those details. This man can't cooperate with
- 1:37his own rescue. He can't see the Savior walking
- 1:40towards him. He can't cry out, you know, the
- 1:42way Bartimaeus did. Jesus, son of David, have mercy
- 1:44on me. He's just there.
- 1:46A captive, and Jesus heals him. Instantly just like that.
- 1:49No ceremony. No, the text says.
- 1:51The man spoke and saw the change was total.
- 1:54One man, he's in the dark, silent, tormented.
- 1:57The next minute he's looking at the face of Christ and probably,
- 1:59I mean you can imagine, just shouting his head off with joy.
- 2:02And the crowd sees this. This wasn't done in a corner
- 2:05somewhere. It is undeniable.
- 2:08Absolutely undeniable. And the reaction of the crowd is
- 2:10fascinating. They ask a question, but it's a
- 2:13dangerous question, isn't it? They say Can this be the son of
- 2:17David? Oh, that title, Son of David is
- 2:19so loaded. It's Messianic.
- 2:21They're asking, is this the one? Is this the king we've been
- 2:25waiting for all these centuries? And for the Pharisees hearing
- 2:29that question, it's a threat to their entire system, their whole
- 2:33existence. Because they can't deny the
- 2:35miracle itself, right? I mean, the guys standing right
- 2:37there probably describing the color of their robes to them, so
- 2:40they can't just say it didn't happen.
- 2:42No. The evidence is standing right
- 2:44in front of them, talking and seeing, so they have to pivot.
- 2:46It's a classic strategy. If you can't attack the fact of
- 2:49the miracle, you have to attack the source.
- 2:51They have to explain away the supernatural without giving any
- 2:54credit to God. So they come up with this, the
- 2:57sinister theory. They do.
- 2:59They say it is only by Beelzebul, Prince of Demons,
- 3:02that this man casts out demons. Beelzebul.
- 3:05It just sounds evil, like something out of a horror movie.
- 3:07It essentially is. It's a name that's derived from
- 3:10an old Canon ID deity, Belalzabub, which literally
- 3:13means Lord of the Flies. By the 1st century, it had
- 3:17become just another name for Satan, the ruler of the demonic
- 3:20hierarchy. So they are looking at an act of
- 3:23pure mercy, a man getting his sight back, his voice back, his
- 3:26life back, and they're saying the devil did that.
- 3:29They're looking at the work of the Holy Spirit and calling it
- 3:32the Spirit of Filth. It's a moral inversion that just
- 3:35makes your stomach turn. But here's the thing.
- 3:37They probably thought it was a pretty clever argument.
- 3:40Well, it solves their problem, doesn't it?
- 3:42It admits the power is real, so they don't look like they're
- 3:44denying reality. But it frames Jesus as a
- 3:47sorcerer, A deceiver, someone in league with the darkest forces
- 3:52imaginable. It's the ultimate smear
- 3:53campaign. Sure, he can do miracles, but
- 3:56he's a black magician. He's on the wrong team.
- 3:58Spot on. And our mission for this deep
- 4:01dive is to watch how Jesus just systematically dismantles them.
- 4:07He doesn't lose his temper, he doesn't start shouting, he uses
- 4:10razor sharp logic. Then he sets a legal trap, and
- 4:13finally he drops a theological nuclear bomb right on top of
- 4:17them. And somewhere in there, he tells
- 4:20a parable about furniture that completely changes how you view
- 4:24your own salvation. We will definitely get to the
- 4:26furniture that might be the most important part of the whole
- 4:28passage. All right, let's walk through
- 4:30the argument verse 25. The Pharisees have muttered this
- 4:33accusation, maybe just among themselves, But then Matthew
- 4:37writes, knowing their thoughts, he said to them.
- 4:40Let's just pause right there, knowing their thoughts.
- 4:43OK. Is this just, you know, good
- 4:44intuition? Like you see some guys
- 4:46whispering in the corn, they look angry and you can sort of
- 4:48figure out what they're saying, I think.
- 4:50It's much more than that. The Greek word Matthew uses is
- 4:53enthemisace. It's a very heavy word.
- 4:55It doesn't mean a random thought that just pops into your head
- 4:57like did I leave the oven on? It refers to deep seated
- 5:00deliberations, inner dialogues, the calculated purposes of the
- 5:04heart, the kind of stuff you Mull over and reason through.
- 5:08So he's not just guessing, he's reading the actual script
- 5:11they're writing in their head. He's reading their intent.
- 5:13You know in a court of law you have the difference between the
- 5:15ACT itself and the Mens react. The guilty mind Jesus is
- 5:19piercing right through their external behavior and looking at
- 5:22the malice in the engine room of their souls.
- 5:24That's unnerving. It's divine.
- 5:26I mean, who is the one in the Old Testament who searches the
- 5:29heart and tests the mind? It's Yahweh.
- 5:31Jeremiah 17.10 is crystal clear on that.
- 5:34By telling us that Jesus knew their infamies, Matthew is
- 5:37subtly but powerfully identifying Jesus with the God
- 5:40of Israel. He's acting as the judge before
- 5:43the trial even officially begins.
- 5:44So he knows exactly what they're thinking, and he starts his
- 5:48rebuttal with, well, it's a logic puzzle, he says.
- 5:50Every Kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no
- 5:53city or house divided against itself will stand.
- 5:55He starts with a universal axiom, a rule of reality that no
- 6:00one, not even a Pharisee, could argue with.
- 6:02Division brings desolation. And I like the progression
- 6:06there. He starts big.
- 6:07A Kingdom, then a city, then a house.
- 6:10Like a zoom lens, isn't it? Yeah, it shows that this
- 6:12principle works at every single level of existence.
- 6:16If a Kingdom is fighting a civil war, it can't defend its
- 6:18borders. It ends up burning its own
- 6:20crops, killing its own soldiers. It just it collapses from the
- 6:23inside out. The phrase laid waste sounds
- 6:26pretty final. It is the Greek is Aramo.
- 6:28It means to be turned into a desert, to be stripped bare.
- 6:32It's the picture of a city after a brutal siege where there is
- 6:35nothing left but smoking rubble and silence.
- 6:38Jesus is saying that internal conflict isn't just bad for
- 6:41business, it's a fatal structural flaw.
- 6:43It guarantees total ruin and. Then he applies this directly to
- 6:46Satan. He says if Satan casts out
- 6:48Satan, he is divided against himself.
- 6:50How then will his Kingdom stand? And this is the reductio ad
- 6:53absurdum. He takes their argument and
- 6:55follows it to its logical conclusion to show just how
- 6:58absurd it really is. Walk us through that logic
- 7:01chain. OK, so premise Hey, the
- 7:04Pharisees claim Jesus is working for Satan.
- 7:06Premise B Jesus is casting out demons.
- 7:08Conclusion. Therefore, Satan is casting out
- 7:11his own demons. Which means Satan is essentially
- 7:13firing his own employees. He's evicting his own troops
- 7:16from a Garrison they've already secured.
- 7:18He's surrendering territory he had already won.
- 7:21I mean, if Satan is actually doing this, he's committing
- 7:23strategic suicide. He's dismantling his own empire,
- 7:26brick by brick. But wait a second, does Satan
- 7:29really have a Kingdom? I think a lot of us tend to
- 7:31think of evil as just chaotic, you know, like the Joker in
- 7:35Batman. He just wants to watch the world
- 7:37burn. Is it really an organized
- 7:38government? That's a very modern, and I
- 7:40would say very secular mistake to make.
- 7:43We like to think of evil as pure anarchy, but the source material
- 7:47and Jesus himself right here treats Satan as a ruler with a
- 7:51basalaya, a Kingdom. He has a hierarchy, he has a
- 7:54strategy, he has a unified purpose.
- 7:56What is that purpose? Oppression, bondage, deception.
- 8:00Ultimately, death. Satan is profoundly evil, but he
- 8:04is not an idiot. He's a pragmatist.
- 8:07A Kingdom of darkness does not advance its cause by turning on
- 8:10the lights in its own territory. Satan does not adopt a policy of
- 8:14liberating the very captives he worked so hard to enslave.
- 8:18So the Pharisees argument relies on Satan acting completely out
- 8:21of character. It relies on Satan acting
- 8:23directly against his own self-interest.
- 8:25It would be like a general ordering his most successful
- 8:27army to shoot themselves. Just doesn't happen.
- 8:29It's illogical. So why would the Pharisees who
- 8:32are educated men? They know how logic works.
- 8:35Why would they believe something so illogical?
- 8:37And that is the absolute tragedy of it all.
- 8:39It shows that their unbelief isn't really intellectual, it's
- 8:42moral. It's a matter of the will.
- 8:44They are not rejecting Jesus because they ran the numbers and
- 8:47the math didn't add up. They're rejecting him because
- 8:49they hate. Him, they hate him and they
- 8:51would rather believe in a suicidal, self defeating Satan
- 8:54than a saving, sovereign Jesus. That is the state of the
- 8:58hardened heart. When you are committed to
- 9:00rejecting God's anointed King. You will embrace any absurdity
- 9:04to protect your worldview. You will believe things that
- 9:07make 0 logical sense just so you don't have to bend the knee.
- 9:10OK, so he's destroyed their logic.
- 9:12The satanic civil war theory is dead in the water.
- 9:15But he doesn't stop there. He pivots in verse 27.
- 9:20And this to me, is where it gets really personal and a little bit
- 9:23nasty. He asks.
- 9:25And if I cast out demons by Beelzebel, by whom do your sons
- 9:29cast? Them out.
- 9:30This is the second phase of the attack.
- 9:32The sons of the Pharisees. Now when he says sons, who is he
- 9:35talking about? Is this their actual biological
- 9:37kids? Probably not.
- 9:39So it's possible, I suppose. In that 1st century Jewish
- 9:42context, sons usually meant disciples or members of a
- 9:46particular school or Guild. You know, like the sons of the
- 9:49prophets in the Old Testament. The Pharisees had their own
- 9:51followers, their own school of exorcists.
- 9:53I honestly didn't know the Pharisees were in the exorcism
- 9:56business. Oh, they were deeply involved in
- 9:58it. We actually have historical
- 10:00records, specifically from Josephus, the Jewish historian,
- 10:03that describe what these exorcisms often look like.
- 10:07And they were, well, they were very theatrical.
- 10:10Give us the details. What are we picturing?
- 10:12Josephus describes these very elaborate rituals that often
- 10:15involve things like smelly roots.
- 10:17There's one in particular called the Barra's root.
- 10:20The barra's root. Yes, and you had to pull it out
- 10:23of the ground in a very specific way or it would kill you.
- 10:27So they would tie a dog to it, have the dog pull it up, and the
- 10:30dog would supposedly die in the process.
- 10:32That sounds like something straight out of witchcraft.
- 10:34It definitely borders on it and then they would take this route,
- 10:36maybe burn it and hold it under the nose of the possessed
- 10:39person. They would recite these long,
- 10:42complicated incantations, invoke the name of Solomon, maybe use a
- 10:46ring with a special seal on it. It was a whole spectacle.
- 10:50Lots of smoke, lots of chanting, lots of sweat.
- 10:53So let's just picture the scene. You have the Pharisee students
- 10:56doing this elaborate, smelly, dangerous ritual, and maybe it
- 11:00works, maybe it doesn't. And then you have Jesus.
- 11:03Who just speaks? Go and the demon is gone.
- 11:07No roots, no dead dogs, no incantations, Just pure,
- 11:11unadulterated authority. So why does bringing up their
- 11:14sons trap the Pharisees so badly?
- 11:17Because it creates A dilemma, a set of horns that they cannot
- 11:19escape. Jesus is essentially saying,
- 11:22look, you guys approve of your students doing exorcisms.
- 11:25You believe that when they do it, it's by the power of God.
- 11:28But when I do it, and frankly I do it better, faster, and more
- 11:31completely, you immediately call it the devil.
- 11:34I see it. So if all is demonic then they
- 11:37have to condemn their own students.
- 11:39Exactly. If the very act of casting out a
- 11:41demon is proof that you're in league with Satan, then their
- 11:45sons are all sorcerers. They would be obligated by their
- 11:48own law to dry their disciples before the Sanhedrin and have
- 11:51them stoned. And they're obviously not going
- 11:53to do that. Of course not, it would destroy
- 11:55their entire movement. But that leaves them with option
- 11:57B. If their sons are actually
- 11:59casting out demons by God's help, even using these lesser,
- 12:03weaker, more ritualistic methods, then they have no
- 12:06choice but to admit that Jesus, who is doing it with absolute
- 12:10ease and authority, is also working by the power of God.
- 12:13And if they admit that, then they have to admit he might be
- 12:16the Messiah. They are checkmated.
- 12:18It's a brilliant move. And then he delivers the killer
- 12:21blow. Therefore they will be your
- 12:23judges. He calls their own disciples as
- 12:26witnesses for the prosecution. He's saying that the very people
- 12:29the Pharisees are training will stand up at the final judgement
- 12:32and say our masters were hypocrites.
- 12:34They didn't care about the truth, they only cared about who
- 12:36was getting the credit. It's pure tribalism.
- 12:39It's a genuine miracle when our guide does it.
- 12:41It's dark magic when your guide does it.
- 12:43And we call this the sin of selective standards.
- 12:46It's looking at the exact same fruit and judging it differently
- 12:49based on your party line rather than on objective truth.
- 12:52And we still see that today, don't we?
- 12:54All the time. Constantly, if a leader in our
- 12:57own theological camp have a moral falling, we say, oh, he's
- 13:00under spiritual attack. Or, well, he's a complicated
- 13:03man. But if a leader in the opposing
- 13:05camp does the exact same thing, we're the first to shout, see,
- 13:08he's a wolf. He was never one of us to begin
- 13:11with. That's yeah, it's gross.
- 13:13It is. It's fallen human nature, and
- 13:15Jesus exposes it ruthlessly. He just strips away the pretense
- 13:18that this is some kind of serious theological
- 13:20investigation. He shows it for what it is,
- 13:23pure, unadulterated jealousy. So logic crushed, hypocrisy
- 13:28exposed, now we get to the theological summit.
- 13:31Verse 28. But if it is by the Spirit of
- 13:34God that I cast out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon
- 13:37you. This is the massive shift from
- 13:39defense to declaration. He stops playing their what if
- 13:41game and just tells them the reality of the situation.
- 13:44And notice the trinitarian dynamic.
- 13:46Here you have the Son Jesus casting out demons by the Spirit
- 13:48of God. Can we stop there for a second?
- 13:50Because this used to really confuse me.
- 13:52Jesus is God, He's the second person of the Trinity.
- 13:55He has all authority in heaven and on earth.
- 13:57So why does he need the Holy Spirit to cast out a demon?
- 14:01Can he just, you know, ZAP them with his own divinity?
- 14:04That is a fantastic question, and it takes us right into the
- 14:07heart of the doctrine of the Incarnation.
- 14:09When the sun became flesh, He did not for a moment cease to be
- 14:13God, but He willingly laid aside the independent use of His
- 14:16divine attributes. He lived his life as a man under
- 14:20the Law. He lived in perfect dependence
- 14:22on the Father and in the power of the Spirit.
- 14:24So he isn't walking around with God Mode turned on all the time,
- 14:29so to speak. Right.
- 14:30This is what theologians sometimes call the economic
- 14:32Trinity, Not about money, but about how the Persons of the
- 14:35Godhead relate to each other in the plan, The Economy of
- 14:38Redemption, the Westminster Confession says the Mediator was
- 14:42anointed with the Holy Spirit above measure.
- 14:45Jesus is the anointed one. That's literally what Messiah
- 14:47means. So when he heals, when he casts
- 14:49out demons, he's doing it as a man who is perfectly filled with
- 14:53the spirit. Spot on.
- 14:55He is showing us what the perfect man, the new Adam, looks
- 14:57like, living in perfect reliance on God.
- 15:00And there's a powerful historical echo here, too.
- 15:04In Luke's account of this very same story, Jesus says If I cast
- 15:08out demons by the finger of God, the.
- 15:10Finger of God, that that sounds familiar.
- 15:13Where's that from? It goes all the way back to
- 15:14Exodus. Remember the contest between
- 15:16Moses and Aaron and Pharaoh's magicians?
- 15:19Moses turns the water to blood. The Egyptian magicians copy it.
- 15:23Moses brings frogs. The magicians copy that too.
- 15:26But then Moses brings forth gnats from the dust.
- 15:29And the magicians try to copy. It and they can't.
- 15:30They fail. And what do they say to Pharaoh?
- 15:32They say this is the finger of God.
- 15:34It's that moment where the enemy's power runs out and
- 15:36they're forced to admit we are outmatched.
- 15:38This is not a human trick. This is the Almighty.
- 15:40So Jesus is essentially telling the Pharisees you are standing
- 15:43in the middle of a new exodus and you're on the wrong side.
- 15:46A greater exodus, yes. And the result of this new
- 15:49exodus is revealed in the second-half of the verse.
- 15:52Then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.
- 15:54That phrase come upon you. It feels aggressive.
- 15:57It doesn't sound like an invitation.
- 15:59It is aggressive. The Greek word is Ephesian.
- 16:01It doesn't just mean the Kingdom is nearby or the Kingdom is
- 16:04coming soon to a theater near you.
- 16:07It implies A rival contact overtaking.
- 16:12Like a tidal way of hitting the shore.
- 16:14Or an ambush, or an invading army suddenly appearing on the
- 16:17horizon. It means the Kingdom has landed.
- 16:20It is collided with their reality.
- 16:22Well wait a minute. As Reformed thinkers, we believe
- 16:25in the already, not yet of the Kingdom.
- 16:27We know the Kingdom isn't fully here yet.
- 16:29I mean, there's still sin, there's still death, we're still
- 16:32waiting for the final consummation.
- 16:34So how can Jesus say it has come?
- 16:36That is the essential tension we live in as Christians.
- 16:40The final consummated Kingdom, the physical reign of Christ, of
- 16:43the new earth that is still flutter, but the dynamic rule of
- 16:46God, the kingly power that breaks the back of the enemy
- 16:49that invaded history at that very moment.
- 16:52The king is in the room. Because the king is in the room,
- 16:54the Kingdom is in the room. The exorcism is the proof it's a
- 16:57military incursion. Jesus has just breached the
- 17:00perimeter of Satan's occupied territory.
- 17:03It's D-Day. It is the beachhead.
- 17:05The evasion has begun. And for the Pharisees this is a
- 17:08terrifying realization, because if the Kingdom has come upon
- 17:12them, they are no longer impartial observers in a
- 17:14theological debate. They are occupied territory.
- 17:17They're standing before a sovereign who has already begun
- 17:21the conquest of their land. You can't really debate a
- 17:23Kingdom that just landed on your head, no.
- 17:26You can either surrender or you will be crushed.
- 17:28There's no third option. And that leads us directly to
- 17:30the illustration, the parable that explains how this conquest
- 17:33is happening, verse 29. Or how can someone enter a
- 17:36strong man's house and plunder his goods?
- 17:38Unless he first binds the strongman, then indeed he may
- 17:42plunder his house. This is the climax of the entire
- 17:45argument, and honestly, it's the climax of human history
- 17:48compressed into one single powerful sentence.
- 17:51OK, so we have a few characters here.
- 17:53The strongman, the house and the intruder, the thief.
- 17:58Let's identify them clearly. The strong man is Satan.
- 18:02And notice Jesus gives him his due.
- 18:04He calls him strong. He held that blind and mute man
- 18:08captive for years. No human doctor, no ritual, no
- 18:12exorcist could break his grip. He is a formidable enemy.
- 18:16OK. And the House, what does that
- 18:17represent? The house is his domain.
- 18:20It's this present evil age. It's the world system that, as
- 18:23first John 5.9 says, lies under the power of the wicked one.
- 18:26And the intruder, the one breaking in to steal things.
- 18:30That's Jesus, the stronger man. It's funny, we usually think of
- 18:33the thief breaking into the house as the bad guy, but in the
- 18:36story, Jesus is the thief. He is the great thief.
- 18:38He's the divine cat burglar who breaks into the prison to steal
- 18:41the prisoners and set them free. OK, so let's talk about the
- 18:44goods, the stuff that he's stealing, the plunder.
- 18:46The Greek word is skewy. Skew.
- 18:48It means vessels, instruments, tools, household utensils.
- 18:51Lamps, bowls, chairs, tables. Furniture.
- 18:55And who is the furniture we are? See, that hurts my ego a little
- 18:58bit. I like to think of myself as a,
- 19:01you know, a soldier in God's army, or at least an active
- 19:05participant. But Jesus here calls me a lamp.
- 19:08And this is where the Reformed doctrine of total depravity
- 19:10becomes absolutely inescapable. Just think about the analogy for
- 19:14a second. Does a lamp decide to be stolen?
- 19:16No, it just sits there on the table.
- 19:19Does a bowl run to the front door, unlock it from the inside
- 19:22and wave the thief in? No, of course not.
- 19:25It's inanimate. Does the furniture help the
- 19:27thief fight off the homeowner? Definitely not.
- 19:30That is our condition by nature, Ephesians 2 says.
- 19:33We were dead in our trespasses and sins.
- 19:35We were not drowning swimmers weekly waving a hand for help.
- 19:39That's the error of synergism, the idea that we cooperate with
- 19:41God in our own salvation. Jesus completely destroys
- 19:44synergism here. We were the property of the
- 19:46strongman. We were in his house, under his
- 19:49lock and key, and utterly passive.
- 19:51We were the spoils of his ancient war against God.
- 19:54We were chattels, we belong to the Kingdom of Darkness and
- 19:58worse, we didn't want to leave. A lamp is perfectly content to
- 20:02sit on the table of the strongman because that is the
- 20:04only house it has ever known. So if the furniture is helpless,
- 20:07the only hope is the intruder. That is the doctrine of
- 20:10monarchism. Salvation is the work of 1.
- 20:13The stronger man comes in and look very carefully at the order
- 20:17of operations here. This is so crucial.
- 20:19He doesn't start grabbing lamps and chairs while the throng man
- 20:23is still running around the kitchen with a weapon.
- 20:25Unless he first binds the strongman, a binding comes
- 20:28first. The binding happens first.
- 20:31It is a decisive confrontation between the two commanders.
- 20:34The goods, the furniture, are just watching, or rather, just
- 20:37sitting there while the epic battle for the house rages above
- 20:40their heads. So Jesus enters the house.
- 20:43He confronts the strongman. He overpowers him.
- 20:45He ties him up. And once the strong man is
- 20:48bound, what happens to the goods?
- 20:50Then indeed he may plunder his house.
- 20:52He takes what he came for. If the strong man is tied up and
- 20:56neutralized, he is powerless to stop the thief from taking the
- 20:59lamp off the table. This is the doctrine of
- 21:02irresistible grace. If Jesus decides to save you, if
- 21:05he has set his affection on you, Satan cannot stop him.
- 21:08You cannot stop him. The rescue is inevitable because
- 21:11the rescuer is sovereign and unopposed.
- 21:15That is incredibly comforting, but I have to ask about this
- 21:17binding part. I I grew up in some circles
- 21:21where binding Satan was a pretty common daily activity.
- 21:24We would pray things like I bind you Satan, in the name of Jesus,
- 21:27or I bind the spirit of poverty, or I bind the spirit of traffic
- 21:30on the freeway. I have, I have been in those
- 21:33prayer meetings. Is that what this verse is
- 21:34telling us to do? Do we need to carry around
- 21:36spiritual duct tape with us everywhere we go?
- 21:38No. In fact, that kind of practice
- 21:40completely misunderstands the entire point of the passage.
- 21:43The binding that Jesus is Speaking of here is an
- 21:45objective, historical, once for all accomplishment.
- 21:49It is something He did, not something we are commanded to
- 21:51redo. So when did he do it?
- 21:53He was certainly doing it in his earthly ministry every time he
- 21:56cast out a demon, but the definitive final binding
- 21:59happened at the Cross and in the Resurrection.
- 22:03Colossians 2 verse 15 tells us that on the cross He disarmed
- 22:07the rulers and authorities and put them to open chain by
- 22:09triumphing over them in it. So the strong man is already
- 22:13tied up. In the sense that he cannot
- 22:14prevent the spread of the gospel and he cannot prevent the
- 22:17salvation of God's elect. Yes, he is bound.
- 22:20He is a defeated foe. He's on a leash.
- 22:22So if I pray, I bind you Satan. I'm basically asking Jesus to go
- 22:26back and do something he already finished 2000 years ago.
- 22:29It implies the knot came loose. It implies the victory at
- 22:32Calvary wasn't total or sufficient.
- 22:34And if you look through the New Testament epistles, all the
- 22:36instructions given to the church on how to live the Christian
- 22:38life, nowhere are we ever commanded to bind Satan.
- 22:42We are told to resist him. We are told to stand firm
- 22:44against his schemes. We are told to put on the full
- 22:46armor of God. But we stand in the victory that
- 22:49has already been won by our captain.
- 22:51That changes the whole posture of spiritual warfare, doesn't
- 22:54it? It's not me trying to wrestle
- 22:57Satan into submission every morning.
- 22:58It's me hiding behind the one who already crushed his head at
- 23:02the cross. Precisely.
- 23:04It shifts the focus from your spiritual muscle to Christ's
- 23:08finished work. You are safe not because you're
- 23:11a good spiritual fighter, but because the strongman has been
- 23:13decisively and eternally neutralized by the King.
- 23:17OK, so let's zoom out a little. We've walked through the logic,
- 23:20the trap, the theology, and the parable.
- 23:23What do we do with this? What does Reformed thinking on
- 23:26this passage look like on a Tuesday morning?
- 23:29I think there are three major takeaways, 2 pretty sober
- 23:33warnings, and then one massive life changing encouragement.
- 23:37Right, let's hit the warnings first.
- 23:38Warning #1 is what we could call malicious misattribution.
- 23:41This is the core sin of the Pharisees.
- 23:43They saw the undeniable grace of God and they deliberately
- 23:46relabeled it as a threat. How do we do that today?
- 23:49I don't think many of our listeners are walking around
- 23:51seeing miracles and calling them demonic.
- 23:53No, we do it in much more subtle, respectable ways.
- 23:57We do it when we relabel. The conviction of the Holy
- 23:59Spirit is something else because we don't want to change.
- 24:01Give me an example of that. OK, let's say you are sitting in
- 24:04church or you're reading your Bible at home and the Spirit
- 24:09puts his finger on a particular sin in your life.
- 24:12Maybe it's your quick temper. Maybe it's your love of gossip.
- 24:16Maybe it's your greed and it hurts.
- 24:19You feel that spiritual pressure.
- 24:21That is the Spirit of God doing His gracious surgical work.
- 24:24But instead of repenting. Instead of repenting, our first
- 24:28instinct is often to explain it away.
- 24:29We say I'm just tired today, or that preacher is just a bit of a
- 24:33legalist, or I'm just having a high anxiety day.
- 24:37We attribute the spiritual pressure to psychological or
- 24:39environmental causes so that we can dismiss it without having to
- 24:42obey. We explain away the finger of
- 24:45God so we can keep our precious autonomy.
- 24:47That is a dangerous game to play that is hardening the heart.
- 24:50It is, and the second warning is against those selective
- 24:53standards, the hypocrisy of the Suns.
- 24:55Judging our tribe by one set of rules and the other tribe by a
- 24:58much harsher set. We have to be absolutely
- 25:01ruthless with ourselves on this. When we see a theological error
- 25:06in a writer we really like, do we excuse it?
- 25:09When we see a moral failure in a pastor we follow online, do we
- 25:13minimize it? Oh, he has such a good heart.
- 25:15He was just under a lot of pressure.
- 25:17But if it's someone from the other side, a different
- 25:21denomination, a different political party, we are ready to
- 25:23burn them at the stake for the smallest infraction.
- 25:26And Jesus says our own sons, our own people, will be our judges
- 25:31for that hypocrisy. Truth must be the standard, not
- 25:34tribal loyalty. Full stop.
- 25:36OK, those are sobering. Now give us the encouragement.
- 25:39I think we need the good news after that.
- 25:40The encouragement is for the furniture.
- 25:42For the goods. If you are a believer in Jesus
- 25:45Christ, this morning you are plundered goods.
- 25:48You've been stolen out of the House of Darkness and carried
- 25:50into the Kingdom of Light. And the implication of that is
- 25:53the. Implication is that your
- 25:54salvation is eternally secure. Think about it logically.
- 25:58If you were completely passive in your own rescue, if you
- 26:01couldn't help Jesus get you out, you certainly can't accidentally
- 26:04wander back in. Right.
- 26:06If it didn't depend on my strengths to leave the house, it
- 26:08doesn't depend on my strength to stay out of it.
- 26:10Exactly. And even more importantly, Satan
- 26:13cannot steal you back. Why?
- 26:15Because he is bound, and because the one who was holding you now
- 26:20is the stronger man. Jesus said it himself in John
- 26:2310. No one is able to snatch them
- 26:25out of my Father's hand. The string man was strong, but
- 26:27he wasn't strong enough. He met his match more than his
- 26:31match, he met his master. And for anyone listening who
- 26:34feels suppressed, maybe you feel like you're under spiritual
- 26:37attack, or you live in fear of the demonic.
- 26:41This is your bedrock. You don't need a special ritual.
- 26:43You don't need a barest route. You need to anchor your soul in
- 26:47the truth that strongman has been bound regarding you.
- 26:49You are the property of the king now.
- 26:51He doesn't lose his things. That is real freedom.
- 26:53It's the only real freedom there is.
- 26:55Jesus ends this whole section with a line that just It draws a
- 26:58clear line in the sand. Verse 30.
- 27:00Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not
- 27:04gather with me scatters. He destroys the myth of
- 27:06neutrality. This is where the rubber meets
- 27:08the road for every single person.
- 27:10And we love neutrality, don't we?
- 27:12As a culture, we love the middle ground.
- 27:14Oh, I'm spiritual, but not religious.
- 27:17I admire the teachings of Jesus, but I don't want to get too
- 27:19fanatical about it. Jesus just obliterates the
- 27:22middle ground. He says there are only two
- 27:24kingdoms in the entire universe. There is the House of the
- 27:27strongman, and there is the Kingdom of God's beloved Son.
- 27:30You are a resident of one, or you are a resident of the other.
- 27:34There's no Demilitarized Zone. There is no Switzerland.
- 27:37So you can't just be an admirer of Jesus from a safe distance,
- 27:40no. Admiration is not submission, he
- 27:44says. If you are not actively
- 27:45gathering with him, if you are not actively aligned with his
- 27:48Kingdom, work building his church, then you are by default
- 27:52scattering. You are working, consciously or
- 27:55not, for the other Kingdom. That is a hard work.
- 27:58It's a necessary word. The Pharisees tried to find a
- 28:00third option. He's a sorcerer working for a
- 28:02third party. Jesus took that option off the
- 28:05table. He forces a choice.
- 28:07You have to decide, is he the invading king from heaven, or is
- 28:11he a damnable liar? You cannot simply call him a
- 28:14good moral teacher and walk away.
- 28:15Force is a verdict from everyone who hears it.
- 28:17And that is what the Gospel always, always does.
- 28:21It corners us. It confronts our pride.
- 28:24It demands our unconditional surrender.
- 28:27But the beautiful paradox of it all is that in that surrender is
- 28:32the only place we find victory. The world tells you keep your
- 28:35autonomy, be your own king, protect your house.
- 28:39Jesus says, let me plunder you, and I will give you a Kingdom
- 28:42that cannot be shaken. Amen.
- 28:45We are only truly free because we have been captured by grace.
- 28:48That's a powerful place to land. It's not about how strong we
- 28:50are, it's about who the stronger man is.
- 28:53It always has been and it always will be.
- 28:55Thank you for walking us through that.
- 28:56That was dense, but man, it was so good.
- 28:58It was my pleasure. And to everyone listening,
- 29:00remember you have been plundered for a purpose.
- 29:03Don't try to go back to the old house.
- 29:05Trust the stronger man. We will see you next time on
- 29:07reformed thinking.
