Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name's King Yosa from coming down to Australia with
- 0:03Speaker 1: Health and Perturbator in September twenty twenty six.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Fantastic brother, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Absolutely not a problem.
- 0:12Speaker 2: As you say.
- 0:13Speaker 3: You returned to Australia next month for running shows with
- 0:16Speaker 3: Health and Persurbator, kicking off in Brisbane on September eight eighth,
- 0:19Speaker 3: then heading to Sydney at Melbourne, Hobot and Adlai before
- 0:22Speaker 3: finishing in Freemant on September twenty sixth.
- 0:25Speaker 2: But not long now? How do you have packed ready
- 0:27Speaker 2: to go?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Uh? No, it kind of snuck up on me. You know,
- 0:31Speaker 1: this whole year flew by and then all of a
- 0:33Speaker 1: sudden I was like, oh my god, I have like
- 0:34Speaker 1: a sixteen hour flight in a couple of weeks. But
- 0:39Speaker 1: we'll be ready. We'll be ready nice. And you know,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the packing is the easy part. It's all the other
- 0:45Speaker 1: stuff that I've gotten done already. You know, merchant is
- 0:47Speaker 1: ready to go, setlist is good to go, gear is
- 0:50Speaker 1: good to go. So yeah, I'm excited.
- 0:53Speaker 3: No, I thin, what's changed with our King since you're
- 0:56Speaker 3: out of here? Last in twenty twenty four with great push.
- 0:59Speaker 1: OUTA Yeah, it's funny is it's like I feel like
- 1:02Speaker 1: I've lived a hundred lives since I was you know.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But yeah, there's a whole new album that's been out
- 1:09Speaker 1: since then called spire Fear, And the live setup has changed,
- 1:14Speaker 1: like the new music performing live has changed. And we
- 1:17Speaker 1: just have like a lot more touring under our belt.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I was saying earlier, like in a stat measure from
- 1:24Speaker 1: the beginning of King yosif to last time you are in Australia,
- 1:27Speaker 1: we've done that many shows plus like twenty in a
- 1:32Speaker 1: single year. Yeah, right, So yeah, we just have a
- 1:36Speaker 1: lot more under our belt, and I think just like
- 1:38Speaker 1: coming in so much more confident and just like stoked.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You know. It's a lot less like running uphill, a
- 1:46Speaker 1: little less sissiphus, you know, and a bit more like
- 1:49Speaker 1: people understand what we're doing now.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right through it it.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Your music is an intense planning to industrial hardcore and
- 1:57Speaker 3: hash noise.
- 1:58Speaker 2: So how do you applyace structuring?
- 1:59Speaker 3: You say, when sharing a bill with a cinematic Dutch
- 2:02Speaker 3: intator and the heavy electronics of Health.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I always say that, you know, instead of planning for
- 2:11Speaker 1: the bill, I think a lot of people would want
- 2:14Speaker 1: to be like oh well, I should probably play my
- 2:17Speaker 1: more synthy stuff, you know, or I should lean to
- 2:21Speaker 1: the direction of them. I will do the exact opposite,
- 2:26Speaker 1: because you know, it's like we're all on a bill together.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You don't want to hear me do an impression of
- 2:31Speaker 1: Perturbator and Health. You know you're already gonna hear Perturbator
- 2:35Speaker 1: in Health. So for me, I always tend to go
- 2:38Speaker 1: just more than metal direction. I think also live that
- 2:41Speaker 1: just like works better, it feels good for me. I
- 2:46Speaker 1: think me and the rest of the band all just
- 2:48Speaker 1: like gel a little bit easier too on like the
- 2:51Speaker 1: heavy stuff, because that's all where we come from. So
- 2:56Speaker 1: you know, confrontational and direct is like always the direction
- 2:59Speaker 1: we're trying to go when it comes alive. I don't
- 3:03Speaker 1: we only get X amount of time with people, and
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'm not gonna like beat around the bush like I
- 3:09Speaker 1: just flew. I'll be flying halfway across the world. People
- 3:13Speaker 1: be there, So like we're not gonna sit there and
- 3:16Speaker 1: like give you a forty five minute build up set.
- 3:18Speaker 1: You know, like we're starting. It's time to move, no
- 3:22Speaker 1: standing around, do something, you know.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, brother, I Am Health is a band famous
- 3:27Speaker 3: for the collaboration albums like just Go Forward, Convict Dale
- 3:30Speaker 3: see said do you Renson, You're gonna be in there?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Read back Size Mate and sort of getting them getting
- 3:34Speaker 3: them on board to work.
- 3:35Speaker 2: On you next one.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Uh. You know what's funny is that it was supposed
- 3:39Speaker 1: to happen uh, and it didn't due to the fires
- 3:44Speaker 1: in Los Angeles. But we've talked about it. We talked
- 3:47Speaker 1: about it all the time, and we're gon We've talked
- 3:49Speaker 1: about working many of times before, so I'm sure it's
- 3:52Speaker 1: only inevitable.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, these things are.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Your music to like in a nice way, like it's
- 4:00Speaker 3: incredibly blake, it's intense, it's aggressive, but backstage, Jenny g
- 4:05Speaker 3: can be totally different, Like what does that He can
- 4:07Speaker 3: get us a green room, look like five minutes before
- 4:09Speaker 3: you hit the stage versus five minutes after.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah, we always joke that we're the most boring band
- 4:15Speaker 1: in the world.
- 4:18Speaker 3: You know, me and.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Synth guitar Cameron, we're both sober. We don't do anything.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Only our drummer drinks a beer and then like nobody
- 4:29Speaker 1: else know, tour party drinks or does anything. So most
- 4:32Speaker 1: of the time, like before we go on, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'll put in headphones. I like to listen to like
- 4:38Speaker 1: some movie scores or like just like something really atmospheric
- 4:42Speaker 1: before we go up. And then you know, it's like
- 4:46Speaker 1: a lot of joking around. We're always laughing together. I
- 4:48Speaker 1: think that's like the biggest thing about touring is like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you know, you're with people all the time, and that
- 4:53Speaker 1: being with people that way all the time makes kind
- 4:55Speaker 1: of want to kill each other. So being able to
- 4:58Speaker 1: laugh about stuff is like big for us. So it's
- 5:01Speaker 1: a lot of joking around. And then post that it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: normally like we're all pretty quiet and pretty tired, just
- 5:06Speaker 1: because it's intense, Yeah, exactly, you know, trying not to
- 5:12Speaker 1: try not to have ascid ever, so most of the
- 5:15Speaker 1: time we're both we're all just quiet, wrapping cables and
- 5:17Speaker 1: movements after the.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Set, uh Yescudio treks mat Like when you figure albums out,
- 5:24Speaker 3: you've got so many intricate layers of distortion and noising.
- 5:27Speaker 3: They said, how how difficult is that to REPUTATEE on
- 5:30Speaker 3: the lodge stage.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It's definitely like intensive, but you know, I think it's
- 5:40Speaker 1: kind of like a like a relay race sometimes, Like
- 5:43Speaker 1: when I learned something about doing the album, then I
- 5:46Speaker 1: gotta run all the way over here and grab the
- 5:48Speaker 1: baton from somebody else and be like, oh fuck, I
- 5:50Speaker 1: gotta learn about doing all the live stuff again, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: And then I do that again, and I just keep
- 5:55Speaker 1: going back and forth. But uh, it's getting easier than
- 6:00Speaker 1: set Up is a lot different than even when we
- 6:01Speaker 1: went down last time. So I'm a bit more intensive
- 6:06Speaker 1: on how we set up and what works and how
- 6:10Speaker 1: we do it. So it's gotten easier over time, but
- 6:13Speaker 1: it's still something that I struggle with and I'm constantly
- 6:15Speaker 1: trying to think about and how we're going to do it.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And I think a huge part of that is leans
- 6:22Speaker 1: into the energy aspect of performing live and letting people
- 6:26Speaker 1: know that, like this is a live version of the song,
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's not going to be perfect. It's more important to
- 6:31Speaker 1: me that we're like pushing so hard that you're like,
- 6:34Speaker 1: oh my god, these guys are like psychotic. Then for
- 6:37Speaker 1: us to play a song perfect, you know, yeah, it's
- 6:41Speaker 1: less like I like it to be more kinetic and like,
- 6:44Speaker 1: you know, you're there with me. I would rather you
- 6:47Speaker 1: move than it be just a performance where you are like, oh,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm watching this for entertainment, you know, like I want
- 6:54Speaker 1: people to also be there with me, and even if
- 6:56Speaker 1: it's imperfect, just understand how much we're trying to give
- 7:01Speaker 1: to it in the moment. So it's not always perfect
- 7:04Speaker 1: when we do it live. And that's kind of by design,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, because like the music can be perfect on
- 7:09Speaker 1: the record if I want it to be, but in person,
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's like we only have that moment.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So yeah, I read this next question before speaking to you,
- 7:19Speaker 3: and not just speaking to you, mate, I reckon it's
- 7:20Speaker 3: actually quite pertinent. But your music deals with intense themes
- 7:24Speaker 3: to control anger and in general friction. Like you seem
- 7:27Speaker 3: like a really nice guy, I might joking you, so
- 7:29Speaker 3: like it's stepping on the stage every night an active,
- 7:31Speaker 3: genuine therapeutic cathosesis for you, what do you have to
- 7:34Speaker 3: like step into character to to go into that?
- 7:38Speaker 1: It's it's honestly not very hard. It's not very hard
- 7:41Speaker 1: for me. I think it's just like I always say
- 7:47Speaker 1: that all the songs and all the bad stuff and
- 7:50Speaker 1: everything that's in the tracks, like what by being honest
- 7:53Speaker 1: with music and like putting it all out there and
- 7:55Speaker 1: putting it in there is it's like almost like writing
- 7:58Speaker 1: your own book with all your own worst things, and
- 8:01Speaker 1: instead of it being trapped in your head, you get
- 8:03Speaker 1: to open the book when you decide and revisit it,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and so like, uh, you know, it's not uncommon for
- 8:12Speaker 1: me to cry during this set. It's not uncommon for
- 8:15Speaker 1: me to like literally like be so worked up that
- 8:18Speaker 1: I just start yelling or anything like that, because it's like, uh,
- 8:22Speaker 1: you know, it's like exposure therapy. Everything that I'm going
- 8:24Speaker 1: back into when I listen to the music is like
- 8:26Speaker 1: all right there for me, and it's because I trapped it.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I trapped it in the song and then I decide
- 8:31Speaker 1: that I'm going back to it, you know. So yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 1: it's it's it's pretty funny, like especially if like my wife,
- 8:38Speaker 1: you know, she she has a really funny impression of
- 8:41Speaker 1: me on the stage. She's always just like like yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 1: but yeah, it's it's it's I don't even really think
- 8:52Speaker 1: about it anymore, you know. It's kind of just like
- 8:54Speaker 1: it's there and it just turns on and then by
- 8:56Speaker 1: the time it sets over, it's gone cool.
- 8:59Speaker 3: You said me more about turn astri and Astralian to
- 9:02Speaker 3: hit it when it comes to your deposit of sound, Like,
- 9:05Speaker 3: what do you mean by that?
- 9:08Speaker 1: I think that, you know, I felt this way when
- 9:11Speaker 1: we went to like Western Europe too, But like I
- 9:14Speaker 1: think that you guys, like Australians have a better culture
- 9:18Speaker 1: around electronic music and so like in America, people hear
- 9:23Speaker 1: my music and they're like like dubstep, you know, because
- 9:28Speaker 1: there's like no framework for like the influences that are coming.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So when you know, we went over the first time,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I was like super shocked when we played Dark Mofo,
- 9:38Speaker 1: like how well people understood it. And they would come
- 9:40Speaker 1: up to me and be like, oh, I like how
- 9:42Speaker 1: it How's like the Prodigy influence, but it's also like
- 9:45Speaker 1: like a hardcore band, And I was like, nobody's ever
- 9:49Speaker 1: just like picked my influences out, like like it was nothing,
- 9:52Speaker 1: you know. And I don't know if it's like you
- 9:55Speaker 1: guys share more like flavor palette with Europe than like
- 10:00Speaker 1: America does. But like in America, anything that has electronic
- 10:03Speaker 1: music and that people are like, uh, it has to
- 10:07Speaker 1: be like really straightforward, you know. It has to be
- 10:10Speaker 1: like this sounds like club music, This sounds like you know,
- 10:15Speaker 1: ambient music or even like industrial. It's like it has
- 10:20Speaker 1: to sound like industrial as I note to be from
- 10:22Speaker 1: nineteen eighty nine, you know, like people like Joy forty. Yeah.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So when we went over and people were like telling
- 10:30Speaker 1: me about things that like I think about musically and
- 10:33Speaker 1: the things that I love and I'm inspired by, I
- 10:35Speaker 1: was like, how the hell do you guys already know that?
- 10:38Speaker 1: You know, like we don't even have a conversation. You
- 10:40Speaker 1: just understand, you know.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm talking about influences probably your only way. I had
- 10:47Speaker 2: strong rips and.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Trap metal and underground hip hop beats, but you say
- 10:50Speaker 3: I have steadily evolved into a massive industrial hard core
- 10:52Speaker 3: warlen noise. So it's so much going on, Like how
- 10:56Speaker 3: do you find the balance into creative pricess? Like how
- 10:58Speaker 3: do you know when you go on too far one
- 10:59Speaker 3: way or not far enough in another.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I think it's always has to do with just like
- 11:08Speaker 1: the spirit of it, you know, and like my own fulfillment.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So like when I'm writing a record, if I'm like, uh,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you know, I'll write lyrics and then they sit in
- 11:20Speaker 1: a notebook or in a phone, and then I'll look
- 11:22Speaker 1: at them, and a lot of times if they haven't
- 11:24Speaker 1: already been to a song, I'm like, it's because I
- 11:25Speaker 1: haven't written the right song, and that may be that
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I wrote too many heavy songs. I
- 11:33Speaker 1: can't put these lyrics over a heavy song, Like that
- 11:35Speaker 1: doesn't make sense. Like I have to go a different
- 11:38Speaker 1: direction now if I want to be honest with myself.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And you know, sometimes being like really aggressive music is
- 11:44Speaker 1: really vulnerable in a different way than soft music is vulnerable,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know, and so they it kind of informs itself,
- 11:52Speaker 1: like my like my my intuition just leads me there,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and it's just by the design of me trying new
- 12:02Speaker 1: things all the time that I just end up in
- 12:03Speaker 1: strange places, you know, and all of a sudden, I'm like,
- 12:07Speaker 1: you know, like I have the song that is like
- 12:10Speaker 1: the epitome of it to me on the latest record,
- 12:13Speaker 1: was the track whether the front half of it is
- 12:15Speaker 1: like a super massive attack portis Head inspired and then
- 12:22Speaker 1: it like kind of goes into like a Converge esque
- 12:27Speaker 1: bit to me, and then it finishes out with like
- 12:31Speaker 1: like nineties like metal heads like Goldie like era drum
- 12:35Speaker 1: and bassed thing that then goes into like a breakdown,
- 12:38Speaker 1: And all of those things just happened, Like I just wrote,
- 12:41Speaker 1: like I was writing music and that's where I went
- 12:43Speaker 1: it wasn't like I was like, oh, I have to
- 12:46Speaker 1: put a drum and bass part in this, you know.
- 12:48Speaker 1: It just was like, Oh, I want to write something soft.
- 12:50Speaker 1: It feels like true to me. And as I was going,
- 12:53Speaker 1: I was like, oh, the atmosphere is really dense on this.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I feel like I need to be like I need
- 12:57Speaker 1: to come out and it needs to sound like I'm
- 12:59Speaker 1: in a big hall yelling by myself. Oh well, like
- 13:02Speaker 1: that was the release. How do I make it all build?
- 13:04Speaker 1: You know? So it's all intuition, and I think it's
- 13:07Speaker 1: just from like purely trying to always have like a
- 13:10Speaker 1: really authentic relationship with how I enjoy music and how
- 13:13Speaker 1: I love it, you know, because it's hard. It's hard
- 13:16Speaker 1: to keep liking things.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Would just say someone's coming along to Sea Health and
- 13:21Speaker 3: they haven't really heard a king Ysis before. Made like,
- 13:23Speaker 3: what three songs you should they listen to before they
- 13:25Speaker 3: come along getting out of here?
- 13:27Speaker 2: What to expect?
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say Pitycase is gonna be the one
- 13:32Speaker 1: that pops up. So just listen to Pitycase. Know that
- 13:35Speaker 1: that's an old song, but that has the spirit. And
- 13:39Speaker 1: then we're gonna go multi fear because that song is
- 13:44Speaker 1: like where I'm at now, and then if I was like, oh,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you need to know a little bit more of the
- 13:50Speaker 1: dynamic places that I'm trying to go, I would say
- 13:52Speaker 1: liking because it's soft on the front. It's got like
- 13:56Speaker 1: a big stompy chorus with big riffs, still electronics, still metal,
- 14:02Speaker 1: And those would be like kind of the three summary
- 14:05Speaker 1: tracks I would give for right now. But it's also
- 14:08Speaker 1: hard because it depends on who's asking. You know.
- 14:11Speaker 2: That's so true. Well, thanks very much for you talking.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I'd be the pleasure speaker in you.
- 14:15Speaker 3: You will be here with Health and Perturbator from September eight.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Ain't kicking off in Brisbane. Chickens through destroy the line,
- 14:21Speaker 3: so have yourself, fun mate. We'll see in Bribee.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Yeah, see in Brisbane.
