- 0:00I suppose the most important thing is that people feel there
- 0:02was something there for them and that it was relevant.
- 0:04You know, there's nothing worse than saying, well, there's
- 0:07nothing new there. We spoke about that last year.
- 0:09I came with I'll be able to know what, No one could resolve it.
- 0:12So I suppose that that would be my key, if people could leave
- 0:16feeling that they had learnt something, benefited from it
- 0:19and, like I say, and had fun. Hello and welcome to the Retail
- 0:33Podcast. Hopefully you'll be watching
- 0:35this on the weekend before the Retail Technology Show and we're
- 0:39joined by Matt Bradley, founder and director of the Retail
- 0:43Technology Show. So this has been your baby for
- 0:45how many years? I.
- 0:46Launched a retail show in this space in 2011 that was under the
- 0:53guise of the name RBTE, which is the Retail Business Technology
- 0:56Expo got how he ran that initially in Ells court.
- 1:00So that customer how long ago this was before Ells court was
- 1:03was sadly knocked down and replaced with houses.
- 1:05So we launched this out. I then sold that business to
- 1:09another exhibition company where we rebranded the show and called
- 1:12it the retail Expo. And we added some design
- 1:14elements and some digital signage elements into that
- 1:17before COVID happened. And I know we had to make some
- 1:21sort of pre pretty difficult decisions around what events as
- 1:24that most multi large business would run.
- 1:27And sadly retail wasn't one of ones on their agenda.
- 1:30So they they they just put a red line through US really, and we
- 1:33had to make a decision of what we're going to do next.
- 1:35And you know, I then to the phone call from Peter Jones, who
- 1:39was not the dragon, someone completely different, but he ran
- 1:43a company called 19 and said, look, we think this is a really
- 1:45good idea and we'd love you to come and try and bring this back
- 1:48and launch this with us. So we obviously had to come up
- 1:51with a new name as as as RX still owned the IP on that
- 1:55retail Expo. Yeah.
- 1:57And the retail technology show was born.
- 2:00I think 2022 was the first one could be 23.
- 2:04So yes. And it was, and, you know, and
- 2:06it's just come from shrink to shrink really.
- 2:08It was a, it was the big reunion.
- 2:10And you know, to be perfectly honest, it would have been
- 2:13really difficult to not be successful in that first year
- 2:16because we'd all been locked out for God knows how long.
- 2:18Obviously retail was going through fundamental changes at
- 2:21that time as well. And people just want to be back
- 2:23in front of each other. So yeah, we've always had a good
- 2:26feeling about year one, but the the challenge always comes in
- 2:29in, in being better than you were the previous year.
- 2:31So we are now I think into our fourth year and that that graph
- 2:35is still going upwards. So I'm still very pleased.
- 2:37Well, I mean, most incredible element is the location of this
- 2:42show. You've gone for Excel, right?
- 2:45Yeah. So we've, yeah.
- 2:47And that's, that's obviously been a very difficult decision.
- 2:49We've been, as I say, initially we were in else court.
- 2:51We moved to Olympia in 20, 14 I think, and we've been an Olympia
- 2:55ever since. So so leaving Olympia was never
- 2:58gonna be a an easy decision. It's something that I've
- 3:01wrestled with for quite a few years now as the show has grown
- 3:04and grown and grown. And it really has just got to
- 3:06the point where we just, we, we can't fit in there anymore.
- 3:09Yeah. And we needed some, you know, we
- 3:12needed Excel to do a lot of work in order for us to feel
- 3:14comfortable about putting a show in there.
- 3:16And they need to improve a lot of the transport links that led
- 3:19people to there. And now since the Elizabeth
- 3:21line's gone in and it's sort of 10 minutes from Tottenham Court
- 3:24Road, I felt a lot more confident that that it was the
- 3:27right place. They just sort of the the the
- 3:29the planets aligned and there we are.
- 3:32How does? How does that look from from
- 3:34numbers? Because is it like in in my
- 3:36mind, like when I visualise it, it's almost doubled, right or
- 3:39not is Yeah, it turns to the Excel space that you have
- 3:43compared to what you have because I I think I was just
- 3:46saying you off camera. I went to that first show and
- 3:50what really blew my mind was I was sat in one of the talks
- 3:54Gang, this is a free show, right?
- 3:56And and I'm getting some fantastic content that's not,
- 4:00you know, just exhibitor LED content.
- 4:02It was like, I think it was Sainsbury's and somebody else
- 4:05chatting at that time and the room was packed, but it was
- 4:08free. I'm just curious, like what what
- 4:11how are the numbers? What are the numbers?
- 4:13So I mean it's quite daunting actually.
- 4:15I made, I made a big mistake of doing a venue visit a few weeks
- 4:18ago and looked at the entire country.
- 4:21We've actually, since the show, since we finished the show last,
- 4:24we've actually taken additional space throughout the year at
- 4:27Excel. We've had to keep negotiating
- 4:28and say, look, we need some more, we need some more.
- 4:30So. And I haven't really seen what
- 4:32that venue looks like empty until a couple of weeks ago
- 4:36because there's always sort of shows and happenings and going
- 4:38on in Excel. And they said, no, we've got a
- 4:39break. Actually, you can come down and
- 4:40see exactly the space you've got.
- 4:42And yeah, it's, it's, and the difference between Olympia and
- 4:50Exile is Olympia we had two different halls, so you could
- 4:54never really see from one end all the way down to the other.
- 4:57Yeah. Like if you go to to NRF at the
- 5:00Jabbis and you go to upstairs, you can stand at one end and
- 5:03almost look entirely down. And you can do that now at
- 5:08Exile. And it was, it's a long way
- 5:10down. It's and, and yeah, and you're
- 5:13right, it is, it is a different model to, to what what you'll
- 5:16find in, in Europe where we, we actually don't allow vendors on
- 5:21stage unless they're accompanied by a retailer.
- 5:24And normally it'd be the vendor interviewing the retailer rather
- 5:27than a vendor because, you know, you don't want to put any sort
- 5:31of false presenters around it. You know, we are encouraging
- 5:33retailers to attend this show because they're going to learn
- 5:35from peers and learn from, you know, people within their sector
- 5:38and in their industry. And you don't want to hoodwink
- 5:40them into the show and then be sort of into a into a theatre.
- 5:43And then this PowerPoint starts and a sales pitch begins because
- 5:47you, you lose your audience very quickly.
- 5:49And, you know, I have found that this sector has been very loyal
- 5:53to me in the I've come back in various guises and we've
- 5:56launched shows again after after pandemic and, and you want to
- 5:59return that loyalty by ensuring that, you know, the the promises
- 6:03that we've made, we stick to. So, yeah, it's a slightly
- 6:06different business model in the that we you know, we have AII
- 6:10think personally and of course I'm biassed.
- 6:12I think he's up there with any paid for conference programme.
- 6:15I think we can put ourselves next to any paid for conference
- 6:18programme out there and and sit quite comfortably at that table.
- 6:21Yeah, I can't say that I've been every year, but for the the
- 6:23first year that I went and the content was really for for a
- 6:26free and I have to keep stressing a free event.
- 6:29Good news is from talking to retailers who have been on the
- 6:32show that the industry wants a good show to go to.
- 6:36And one of the interesting things for me is your rebound
- 6:39about making this an event. So there's two things that will
- 6:42in in terms of going forward. I'm curious about your
- 6:44philosophy about more entertainment.
- 6:47So I can see like the carnival theme has come in this year for
- 6:50the first time, which is welcomed a grab jury, British
- 6:55Day and a lot worse thing I could think of going into a
- 6:57miserable grey conference. But you've really gone for this
- 7:00vibrant, colourful, I think. Tell tell me what the thinking
- 7:03behind that was. Well, and you know, it's great
- 7:06that that's been picked up and noticed because that definitely
- 7:08is the intention. I think I totally agree with
- 7:10you. And I've spent, you know, yes,
- 7:11you know, about 15 years running retail shows, but I've also
- 7:14spent around 25 years in the exhibition industry and it, it
- 7:19can be draining. I've done several shows that
- 7:22I've attended in all sorts of areas of the world that can be
- 7:24absolutely mind numbingly boring.
- 7:26And you know, the thought of rows and rows of cheap yellow
- 7:30red carpet or blue carpet and multiple, multiple amounts of,
- 7:35of shell schemes and just sore feet at the end of the day in
- 7:38this soulless whole of a venue, you know, nothing come.
- 7:42I can't think of anything worse. And we, you know, I'm really
- 7:46lucky that we work in an industry that engages with fun,
- 7:49that engages with excitement, engages with experiences.
- 7:51So it was always my ambition to make sure that this show became
- 7:56more the destination and that it isn't a, you know, you're not
- 7:59dragging your team there. People want to go there and
- 8:02that, that that's what you want. It's it's, it's a really, really
- 8:05vibrant, fun sector. And I think as a show, and if we
- 8:08sit as part of that community, we need to represent that.
- 8:11So the ideas of always, you know, we try to come up
- 8:14something different every year. I think that, you know, year one
- 8:16was very easy. It was the big reunion.
- 8:18Year 2 we went sort of this golden ticket, Willy Wonka style
- 8:21theme. It was all around magic and the
- 8:25magic of the retail tech show. And there was magicians and
- 8:27there was cards and there was all sorts going around.
- 8:29And obviously this year new venue, you know, and I'm not,
- 8:33I'm not daft. I hear people saying, oh, Excel
- 8:36is a bit soulless and you know what, most exhibition venues are
- 8:41just these, these sort of massive buildings.
- 8:42So, you know, I, I want people to leave saying I got value and
- 8:46that was a fun day and that that's that for me is, is, is,
- 8:49is job done. So we have.
- 8:51We can't obviously talk about the show without talking about
- 8:54what did you do to get these people to come to the show.
- 8:57I mean, that's a pretty hot A list.
- 9:01And this. Handball and we just announced
- 9:03and we've just announced Joe Wicks as well, who obviously the
- 9:06body coach, social media entrepreneur, so he's going to
- 9:09be there as well. So what?
- 9:10What's he doing? Sorry, because obviously you've
- 9:12got these are speakers. I saw the joke.
- 9:14What's Joe going to be like? I don't.
- 9:16Think he's going to do any exercise He's not getting there.
- 9:18People have to do we need to bring their trainers or anything
- 9:20like that. Well, we just remind you.
- 9:22COVID, but I mean, obviously I'm, I'm not in the UK, sorry.
- 9:26I, I don't want to be disrespectful to if he's moved
- 9:29on, but that was for me. Like where I learn about the
- 9:32guy? There is, I mean, yeah, I mean,
- 9:34a lot of people get PTSD when they when they think about what
- 9:38I think all he's done is he he sort of found his niche in a
- 9:42very difficult time and obviously when got huge amounts
- 9:45of success from him. So he, I think he's got a lot to
- 9:47say around social media, building out content and the
- 9:50importance around that. So that's I think he's doing a
- 9:52keynote. For you, yeah.
- 9:54Yeah. So I mean, that's that's the
- 9:55thing. We've we've got so many, there
- 9:57are many good speakers. It's really hard to say what's
- 9:59the key. Look, I'll scroll through them.
- 10:00Yeah, they, I know. I think that on on this.
- 10:03No, they've only put sorry, it's not the agenda.
- 10:05I know. I was looking at the agenda.
- 10:06Well, I'd say. I can pick up my favourites that
- 10:08I'm looking forward to. Yeah, I think.
- 10:10I mean, Archie, I'm a massive M&S fan, I'm a huge M&S fan.
- 10:14I think the resurgence in the world, in the industry has been
- 10:17really, really exciting to watch.
- 10:19So I'm really keen to hear what Archie's thoughts about that
- 10:22are. I think you know, Archie Norman,
- 10:24chairman of M and SI think will have a lot to say around that.
- 10:27The gym shark story is quite incredible.
- 10:30Steve Hewitt there, who was former CEO from the beginning.
- 10:34So, so he really saw it at the at the start of that and saw it
- 10:39rise from something like 4 million to 4 billion or
- 10:41something like that in six years.
- 10:42So just the insight he's going to be able to share with us is
- 10:45really, really good and there. Are.
- 10:47Stuart Trevor, who was the founder of All Saints, you know,
- 10:50he's really on this big ability thing.
- 10:52He's got some, he's got some incredible stories and someone
- 10:55really, really worth listening to Google, Sophie Neary is going
- 10:58to be there. You know, we've spoken off
- 11:01camera about there's two sides of, of, of the retail industry
- 11:04right now, which is, yeah, challenges.
- 11:06And there are a lot of challenges out there.
- 11:08The economy me is really, really difficult with the rise in
- 11:11National Insurance and things like that.
- 11:13So a lot of retailers that sort of feeling the pinch there and
- 11:15not showing what the next steps are.
- 11:17Richard Lim, CEO of Retail Economics, he's going to be
- 11:20there on stage. He's going to be able to talk
- 11:21through what the economy means and the impacts going to have to
- 11:25retail. So there's some really important
- 11:26Nuggets from him. Obviously, then we talk about
- 11:28some of the really incredible opportunities that are out there
- 11:31as well. And we know that AI is obviously
- 11:33everywhere. So lots and lots of people are
- 11:35going to be talking about that with real time.
- 11:37This is what we've installed and this, this is a difference we've
- 11:40seen. So it's not going to be, though
- 11:42they'll obviously be some blue sky because that's what we love
- 11:44about Rita, isn't it? We always think about what could
- 11:46be. There's also going to be a lot
- 11:47of practical. This is what we're doing, and
- 11:49this is a difference we've seen. You mentioned like your
- 11:52favourites in in terms of the speakers.
- 11:55I know this is your it's like, you know, multiple children, you
- 11:58can't choose which one is your favourite child.
- 12:01But what for you out of the you know, the things that really
- 12:04over the sort of a couple of days of the of the show, what
- 12:08are the standout moments for you that you know, I don't know
- 12:10something that along over the last 12 months you came across
- 12:14the E4 This this is. Well, do you know what?
- 12:17And I think there's something very special about the obviously
- 12:21one, but there's something very special about the big party at
- 12:23the end of day one because there is this real feel, this feeling
- 12:27of of united, of being part of this community.
- 12:30And yeah, there is. There is interrupt you, is
- 12:33everyone invited to that or is that for retailers during the?
- 12:36Everyone is invited to that. And that's.
- 12:38What at? The in the venue itself.
- 12:41Yeah. So as part of our retail
- 12:42carnival Wonderland, from 4:30 till 6:00 on the first day is
- 12:47complete, there'll be entertainment, there'll be
- 12:49prizes, there'll be free drinks. And it's just a really great
- 12:53couple of hours where everyone just lets their hair down and
- 12:56you just see these conversations going on between competitive
- 12:58retailers, which I find really, really fascinating.
- 13:00So it's it's a yeah, that that's obviously a very special moment.
- 13:05And just seeing the engagement from people, you know, that's
- 13:06why we do this. That's why we're putting this
- 13:08together as trying to get people to engage with each other.
- 13:10And so when you can see that happening, you know that you're
- 13:13doing something right. I got you.
- 13:15That's fantastic. If you put yourself in the mind
- 13:18of a retailer who's obviously got the sore feet, has been
- 13:22walking around the show they're on on the train, going back to
- 13:26wherever they. What do you want them to take
- 13:28away from the show? What's the one thing you would?
- 13:30Yeah. What?
- 13:30What's that one thing you'd like them?
- 13:31To take about, I mean. And it's, I suppose just just
- 13:36learnings because obviously a lot of these researchers are on
- 13:38very different journeys and different stages of those
- 13:41journeys. So whereas some might be, you
- 13:42know, and they all come with their own issues as well.
- 13:45So some might have issues around payments, some might have their
- 13:48issues around supply chain, some might have their issues around,
- 13:52you know, can they use AI or economy or some of the stuff
- 13:54we've spoken about, I suppose. But the most important thing is
- 13:56that people feel there was something there for them and
- 13:59that it was relevant. You know, there's nothing worse
- 14:01than saying, well, there's nothing new there.
- 14:03We spoke about that last year. I came with a problem not could
- 14:06resolve it. So I suppose that that would be
- 14:09my key. If people could leave feeling
- 14:11that they had learnt something, benefited from it, you know,
- 14:15made a new connection that might help build their business going
- 14:17forward. All those little things would be
- 14:20and like I say, and had fun. Oh, fantastic.
- 14:22Well, listen, I want to be super respectful to your time, Matt.
- 14:25Thank you. I know this was this was all
- 14:26incredibly last minute. The show's in two weeks time,
- 14:29but we're hoping to get it out next week.
- 14:31So with that, Matt, thank you so much for being on the show.
- 14:35It's a pleasure, Alex. Thank you very much.
