- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, what's happening everybody? Welcome into this edition of Di
- 0:11Checko Daily. I am Andrew de Checko, and I want
- 0:16to do a part two of my Obscure Eagles that
- 0:20you remember for different reasons, whether or not they were
- 0:23in training camp, or whether or not they had roles
- 0:26during the regular season at various times. There's no wrong
- 0:29answer here. It's kind of fun to go down memory lane.
- 0:31And these are players who, for whatever reason, you remember.
- 0:35And I do want to get to an email here
- 0:38because someone sent in an email to Inside the Birds
- 0:42at gmail dot com included linebacker Sean Barber. Wholeheartedly agree.
- 0:48Two thousand and two, Sean Barber was electric. They signed
- 0:51him to a one year deal when he was with
- 0:54the Washington at the time, Washington Redskins, and he was
- 0:58all over the field. If you remember that linebacker corps
- 1:00was Levon kirkwins slash Barry Gardner at middle, weak side
- 1:04was Sean Barber, and strong side was Carlos Emmons, who
- 1:07I maintain is one of the most underrated linebackers in
- 1:10recent memory for the Phodolph Eagles. His ability to sort
- 1:14of erase tight ends. He had some really good battles
- 1:16with Tony Gonzalez and him being six foot five and lengthy.
- 1:20I thought that he gave Tony Gonzalez some fits there.
- 1:23He also mentioned Sean Constanine Moses Fokou remember him seventh
- 1:28round pick out of Maryland. Chris Polk Bang bang, chicken
- 1:32and shrimp. That was what he said when he was
- 1:34on hard knocks with the Houston Texans. He was a
- 1:37running back out of Washington, went undrafted. Nauji Good the linebacker,
- 1:42of course, I remember him wide receiver Hank Basket and
- 1:46running back Ryan Motes.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Appreciate your weighing.
- 1:50Speaker 1: In Scott and those who want to kind of add
- 1:52to that, feel free to email Inside the Birds.
- 1:55Speaker 2: At gmail dot com.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I will raise your Ryan Motes with Bruce Perry, who
- 1:59the drafted in the seventh round out of Maryland. And
- 2:04Bruce Perry, I remember him being immensely undersized at five
- 2:08foot seven, and he saw that.
- 2:09Speaker 3: In training camp. But as he worked through the.
- 2:13Speaker 1: NFL over the last next couple of seasons, I thought
- 2:15that he got a little bit bulk heer, he added
- 2:18some muscle to his frame.
- 2:20Speaker 2: He was drafted in the seventh round in two thousand.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And four, spent the two thousand and four, five and
- 2:26six seasons with the Eagles and rounded out his playing
- 2:29career with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. But I
- 2:36do remember him suffering a very gruesome injury, and I
- 2:40want to say it was the preseason Hall of Fame
- 2:43game against the Raiders on kickoff, if I'm remembering this right,
- 2:47and it was a very serious concussion. I believe it
- 2:49was in two thousand and six, and that was a
- 2:52very scary situation, and Bruce Perry spent some time on
- 2:56the practice squad after that. At one point I believe
- 2:59he was converted to a cornerback and he was eventually
- 3:03released on seven in two thousand and seven, and that's
- 3:06really where his NFL career ended. But there are a
- 3:10number of other players that I wanted to get into
- 3:12here because it really sparked some interest.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And it seemed like I got got a lot of
- 3:16really good feedback on this podcast.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's kind of fun something to kick around as we
- 3:20get towards training camp. How about Artist Hicks, the offensive
- 3:24lineman from Memphis from the early Andy Reid era of
- 3:28the two thousands. He started the Super Bowl in four
- 3:31but this was an undrafted free agent from Memphis in
- 3:34two thousand and two. I believe he was the only
- 3:36undrafted free agent to make the roster that year and
- 3:39ended up carving out a pretty good career for himself.
- 3:43He appeared over one hundred games, started a bunch, and
- 3:46bounced around to a number of different teams. I think
- 3:50he was a classic example of development under one castile
- 3:55and they saw something in him and he played in
- 3:57some pretty big games for the Eagles. And how about
- 4:00safety Clinton Hart. Many may not remember Clinton Hart, but
- 4:04really good story. He began his career playing for the
- 4:08Tallahassee Thunder of the AF two. Then he graduated to
- 4:11the Arena Football League and played for the Tampa Bay Storm,
- 4:15and then it was back in the two thousand and
- 4:18two season, he was signed to the Eagles practice squad,
- 4:21makes the team in two thousand and three out of
- 4:23training camp and starts nine games in that three season.
- 4:27If you remember, Brian Dawkins sustained an injury and it
- 4:31was Clinton Hart who filled in at safety. But I
- 4:35remember that very vividly, and so when you look at that,
- 4:38he had a really good career because he played for
- 4:41the Chargers for a while, he found a role there
- 4:43as a starter. His last season was in two thousand
- 4:46and nine. He signed late with the Rams that year.
- 4:49But I think when you really look at it, this
- 4:51is a player who began his career in the Arena
- 4:52Football League and carved out an NFL career for himself.
- 4:56That's something that I always remember. I believe he wore
- 4:58number thirty three. A rangey type of player, and those
- 5:02are kind of fun stories to think back on. What
- 5:06about linebacker Quinton Caver with the Eagles drafted out of
- 5:10Arkansas in the second round in two thousand and one,
- 5:14they went Freddie Mitchell and then they won Quinton Caver.
- 5:18Speaker 2: He did not play in a bunch of games for
- 5:20the Eagles.
- 5:21Speaker 1: He was somebody that I had, and I'm sure the
- 5:23Eagles did as well, had some high hopes for but
- 5:27for whatever reason, never quite panned out. You see the
- 5:31size at six four, two forty one. You compare that
- 5:34to what Jeremiah Trotter was. You think that you're getting
- 5:37a player who can step right in and give the
- 5:39Eagles some stability there at that position.
- 5:41Speaker 3: But he played just really one season with.
- 5:45Speaker 2: The Eagles, eleven games.
- 5:47Speaker 1: He split time in two thousand and two, between two teams.
- 5:49So he's with the Eagles for a little bit, played
- 5:52in six games there or five games with the Eagles
- 5:56in two thousand and two, one with the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 5:58and then he stuck around with the She's for a
- 6:00couple of seasons three and four, and then by two
- 6:03thousand and five he appeared in eight games with the
- 6:05Cowboys and that was it.
- 6:07Speaker 2: For his career.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Kind of fizzled out after that, and that really set
- 6:10the stage for what was to come. That Matt McCoy
- 6:13in the second round and obviously that didn't pan out.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That was back in two thousand and five.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Remember Nate Wayne and Mark Simonel holding down the linebacker
- 6:21situation for a while. It was dire straits for many
- 6:24years for the Eagles. Barry Gardner at middle linebacker, Levon Kirkland,
- 6:28Sean Barber, which Scott mentioned in the email. And then
- 6:31you look at what the Eagles have right now and
- 6:34Zach Bond, Jehad Campbell, Na Kobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter, Junior,
- 6:38Smile Mondon, It's just it pales in comparison when you
- 6:42look at the earlier Andy Reid years to where they're.
- 6:44Speaker 2: At right now you should feel really good about that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But Quentin Caber was a player that I was thinking
- 6:49about last night whatever happened to and that kind of
- 6:51got the wheels turner for me. So he's definitely a
- 6:54player that I thought of when I was compiling my list.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Rishard Cook, the safety.
- 7:00Speaker 1: This is a player you often see the two Eagles
- 7:03secondary posted on social media. I thought he was one
- 7:06of the more underrated players in that room. He had
- 7:08a very memorable sack. I think it was in the
- 7:11two postseason game against the Bears. He sacked Jim Miller.
- 7:15He's come up with some big time plays. His career
- 7:17was very short, but I thought he was a very
- 7:19critical piece, a rotational piece for Jim Johnson and somebody
- 7:24who I thought that they could plug in and you
- 7:26can utilize him as a blitzer. He was always around
- 7:28the football and he was a core special teamer. And
- 7:31he played in forty seven games, started three, all with
- 7:34the Eagles. This is a guy who was a six
- 7:36round pick in nineteen ninety nine of the Chicago Bears.
- 7:39His career only lasted four seasons. I don't know if
- 7:41you can remember back to three. I think it was
- 7:44a Monday Night football game. Might have been the Steve
- 7:46Sperrier game where he's dealing the duck lips and he's
- 7:49sort of like looking exasperated, looking up for some sort
- 7:51of help. I think that was the game where Rashard
- 7:54Cook suffered a knee injury. He might have been an
- 7:55acl and he never really returned as the same player,
- 7:59and that was really for him. But for the minimal
- 8:02amount of time that he was an NFL player, that
- 8:05was somebody that I always thought was underrated and somebody
- 8:09whom Jim Johnson clearly had a lot of trust in.
- 8:13For those wondering, Rochard Cook is the head football coach
- 8:18at matter Day Catholic in San Diego.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I said that he's still around the game.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And I actually had a chance to talk to Richard
- 8:26Cook when I was working on some quotes for a
- 8:29Jim Johnson commemorative piece, and he offered a ton of
- 8:33insight into Jim Johnson, the man beyond the coach. So
- 8:38Rashard Cook was obviously a player that was that I
- 8:40wanted to get into. Here's a wide receiver that I
- 8:44think if you're a hardcore follower of the Eagles you
- 8:48may remember him. But this is a wide receiver by
- 8:50the name of Michael Gasperson. I remember him being this
- 8:53big bodied wide receiver six foot five or six foot four.
- 8:56Went to San Diego State and he was an undrafted
- 9:00for agent signing of the Eagles in two thousand and five.
- 9:04It seemed like he was on the practice squad for
- 9:06a couple of different seasons. Played for the Cologne Centurions
- 9:10of the NFL Europe, and he played in one game
- 9:15and for all the time that he was on the Eagles,
- 9:17I think it was from two thousand and five to
- 9:19two thousand and seven in different capacities. I remember there
- 9:22was a game against the Saints in the seventh season.
- 9:25He finally gets his opportunity. He might have even been
- 9:28utilized as a tight end because he had such a
- 9:31big frame. I don't even think they used him as
- 9:33a wide receiver, but he was out in the flat.
- 9:37Donald McNabb. This is like a short pass, maybe five yards.
- 9:41He gets his opportunity and it climbs off of his
- 9:43hands and I believe maybe even been The next day
- 9:47he was released and he was never really heard from again.
- 9:51He had to work out with the Seattle Seahawks in
- 9:53two thousand and eight. But as far as that, that
- 9:55was it for Michael Gasperson's career. But you remember seeing
- 9:59the flashes and training camp, and the fact that he
- 10:01hung around as long as he did suggested that he
- 10:03was like what he saw. At least he had the
- 10:05dimensions to give defensive backs some trouble or unique looks
- 10:09in practice. But another player that I sort of think
- 10:13about now that I'm mentioning Michael Gasperson is wide receiver
- 10:15Bill Sampy, who was pretty much a practice squad receiver,
- 10:19never appeared in a regular season game. Undersized but very fast.
- 10:23He went to Louisiana Lafayette, maybe he was six and seven.
- 10:27I believe he stuck around on the Eagles practice squad.
- 10:31He got hurt a lot, I do remember that, but
- 10:33there was some intrigue there with him. Yeah, man, I'm
- 10:36going down memory lane for sure. Those are two players
- 10:39that I definitely remember. Bill Sampy were number thirteen, and
- 10:44I remember him being very fast and slighter build, maybe
- 10:47five to eleven, one hundred and ninety pounds, very quick,
- 10:50good route runner. While we're going down this path, how
- 10:54about Damian Douglas. Damian Douglas Number eighty two, he was
- 10:59the the up back and when Brian Mitchell was the
- 11:02Eagles kick returner.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Damian Douglas was a core special teamer for the.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Eagles under Andy Reid and he was a wide receiver
- 11:09obviously under Brad Childress.
- 11:11Speaker 3: He ended up going to the Kansas City Chiefs after that.
- 11:13Speaker 1: This is a fourth round pick, I want to say,
- 11:15out of UCLA, and I just remember him having two
- 11:19touchdowns in one game from aj Feey in the against
- 11:23the Buccaneers in the season finale. Not a lot was
- 11:26really known, and Damian Douglas never really had a huge career,
- 11:31but he was somebody that was obviously an impactful, impactful
- 11:35player for John Harball.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He also recovered the on side kick.
- 11:40Speaker 1: There was a game of two thousand and one against
- 11:42the Kansas City Chiefs and I remember Damian Douglas recovering
- 11:47at the onside kick in that game? Was it the
- 11:52pickle Juice game as well? He may have recovered that
- 11:54kick too. So for someone who didn't really factor all
- 11:58that much into the Eagles plan as a wide receiver,
- 12:01he can clearly see that he was an ace gunner,
- 12:03good upback and I do remember for some reason I
- 12:07always remember him getting into shoving matches with opposing teams,
- 12:12particularly with the New York Giants and at the time
- 12:14the Washington Redskins those divisional games. He told me when
- 12:17I spoke to him maybe five six years ago, as
- 12:20I was chronicling the Pickle Juice game, that he really
- 12:26thrived off of Brian Mitchell, and Brian Mitchell had this
- 12:28fiery person out and he was always getting after it
- 12:31and talking a lot of smack before games, and Damian
- 12:34Douglas often found himself a part of that because he
- 12:38was there when the specialists were working out. And so
- 12:40Damian Douglas appeared in fifty two games over four seasons,
- 12:44only caught fourteen passes on twenty eight targets three touchdowns
- 12:47as I remember it was in two thousand and one
- 12:50he caught two from aj Feey. But after that he
- 12:53never really surfaced again. But as we go down memory lane,
- 13:00I think a couple other guys linebackers, Tank Daniels, Tracy White,
- 13:04another good special teamer, was very fast, never really factored
- 13:08in defensively. Dallas Reynolds. Dallas Reynolds was around for a
- 13:12while BYU. He was the old school version of Brett Toth.
- 13:17Because Brett Toath has had steng power in the NFL,
- 13:21he's played in the regular season games. He's mostly been
- 13:23on the practice squad, but kind of like, kind of
- 13:28in that mold, although Dallas Reynolds, also, like Brett Toath,
- 13:31appeared in regular season games. Dimitri Patterson, the cornerback, is
- 13:36another player that I remember very well. But if you
- 13:40think back to Dimitri Patterson won, he carved out a
- 13:43role as a significant piece on special teams and then
- 13:48he actually became a cornerback, like he started for the.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Eagles for a while.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Man was that nine. But I first remember him from
- 13:57watching the Kansas City Chiefs hard knocks and he they
- 14:00made their team. He was one of the players that
- 14:01they chronicled he didn't get the phone call he made
- 14:04the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he surfaces later on with
- 14:07the Eagles, and I do remember him from that and thinking, oh,
- 14:10that's interesting. And then he carves out a role on
- 14:13special teams and then played.
- 14:15Speaker 2: In some games.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I distinctly remember a game the Eagles had against the Colts.
- 14:21I think be Asante Samuel had a couple of interceptions.
- 14:24Dimitri Patterson had a really good game.
- 14:27Speaker 3: But that might have been in like two thousand and nine.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And then another player, Well, we'll close off with this
- 14:34oj Attagway if you remember that was around the CJ.
- 14:37Gaddis era where they drafted him at a Clemson and
- 14:40everybody viewed him as the second coming of Brian Dawkins.
- 14:43I believe they selected him in the fifth round and
- 14:46he obviously never panned out for the Eagles. But I
- 14:48think oj Attagway and I also think of Sean Jones.
- 14:53And there's another safety that I'm forgetting. It was maybe
- 14:56twenty eleven, Jared Page, that was his name. That's that
- 15:00Jared Page is another player. So the Eagles have really
- 15:03went through it at safety and to be where they're
- 15:06at right now with Reed blanket Ship, Drew mccoob, with
- 15:08Sidney Brown, Tristan McCollum, Andre Sam.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Maybe even Lewis Seine.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We talked about linebacker having a complete renovation over the
- 15:18years and having a different philosophical approach, but at safety
- 15:21they finally seem to have.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Found some stability there. But this was fun.
- 15:26Speaker 1: If anybody else wants to weigh in on it, we'll
- 15:28keep this thing going and we'll do a part three.
- 15:31But this has just been one of those fun type
- 15:33of topics that I was kicking around with training camp.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Around the corner.
- 15:37Speaker 1: We've already highlighted position battles and we went through a
- 15:40number of different topics. This is something that kind of
- 15:43sparked my idea. As I was driving, I got some
- 15:46different names in mind, and then I seeing Scott's email.
- 15:49He seemed to really dig the podcast. I've got a
- 15:50lot of really good feedback on it. If you have
- 15:53any names you want to add to the list. Inside
- 15:57the Birds at gmail dot com is the email to
- 15:59get involved in the conversation, and that might compel me
- 16:02to do a third installment of this series. And I
- 16:05also want to mention some tough news that was handed
- 16:08down this morning. Former Eagles linebacker Brian Brayman passed away
- 16:12after battling an aggressive form of cancer, and he was
- 16:16diagnosed with cancer back in February. Brian, of course, is
- 16:20a Super Bowl champion. He was a part of the
- 16:22twenty seventeen Eagles and one of the best special teamers
- 16:26that I've ever seen. He brought a ferocity, he brought tenacity,
- 16:31he brought attitude, and he made a ton of plays
- 16:34and he was a critical component for the Eagles third phase.
- 16:37And if you aren't familiar with Brian's story, he overcame
- 16:42a lot of obstacles earlier in his career, had a
- 16:44very unique story and I think if you have a
- 16:47chance to go back and check out the story, which
- 16:49I believe is on Philly mag I posted it on
- 16:52my x account where it sort of chronicles his upbringing
- 16:56and some of the challenges that he had to overcome
- 16:59through his career to get to the NFL.
- 17:02Speaker 2: It's really inspiring.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So rest in peace to Brian Brayman, and my thoughts
- 17:06in condolences go out to the Brayman family.
