- 0:13Tyler Johnson: And the other E word elevate the medium of comics. I am.
- 0:18Phil: ZVA.
- 0:18Tyler Johnson: similar.
- 0:19Phil: Does that mean Tyler's elevated this morning? If he can't elevate?
- 0:23Tyler Johnson: Nope, not elevated. Well, I do have some Mountain Dew here. Oh, that'll get you.
- 0:28Phil: up there.
- 0:28Tyler Johnson: This is…
- 0:29Tad Eggleston: Not yet. He'll get… he'll get truly elevated while he's walking to work.
- 0:34Tyler Johnson: No.
- 0:35Tad Eggleston: taking.
- 0:35Tyler Johnson: day off. This is…
- 0:36Tad Eggleston: So I'm surprised you don't have, like.
- 0:39Tad Eggleston: Willie drinks.
- 0:41Tyler Johnson: We do have them, but, not really.
- 0:44Tad Eggleston: I meant for your mornings.
- 0:46Tyler Johnson: Oh, you mean talking about THC drinks right away in the morning?
- 0:52Tad Eggleston: I mean, it is your reputation.
- 0:53Phil: Tyler.
- 0:54Tyler Johnson: They do have sativa drinks. They do have sativa.
- 0:57Phil: Wow.
- 0:58Tyler Johnson: But I don't know. I think before noon requires special circumstances, you know.
- 1:06Phil: The weekend.
- 1:07Tyler Johnson: To have a, you know, 10 milligram plus drink.
- 1:12Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't partake at all, I just, I don't know, I had it in my head that you, you.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: You rolled out of bed, and that was the special circumstance. So…
- 1:22Tyler Johnson: think.
- 1:23Phil: Put it in your cereal, right? This is the weekend we're talking about.
- 1:26Tyler Johnson: If I've got, you know, like a vape here or something like that, fine, but a whole can of something would be…
- 1:34Tyler Johnson: A little bit much, but…
- 1:36Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:36Tyler Johnson: Anywho, how.
- 1:39Phil: Phil sips suspiciously from a can. Not really.
- 1:45Tad Eggleston: So, news to note, news has been flowing out of New York Comic Con.
- 1:51Tad Eggleston: Already. The first is, Marvel is doing… Paperback.
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: Massively oversized, what they're calling.
- 2:01Tad Eggleston: Bricks.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: I.
- 2:04Phil: Damn time.
- 2:05Tad Eggleston: to allow for lots of comic reading all at once.
- 2:10Tad Eggleston: So, that's fun. Then some, interesting, Creative team stuff, Stan Sakai?
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: We'll be writing a TMT first Ronin, so like a prequel to the last Ronin.
- 2:30Tad Eggleston: series.
- 2:33Tad Eggleston: Grant Morrison is taking on James Bond, and G. Willow Wilson and Rachel Stott.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: Taking the reins on Captain Marvel.
- 2:46Tad Eggleston: Jump into the Captain Marvel shoes are always, like, really big ones. With Kelly Sutahanic and
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: Kelly Thompson having had Like, legit runs there.
- 2:59Tad Eggleston: But then, Wilson… created and killed it on Ms. Marvel, so, like… It's a good choice.
- 3:12Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been?
- 3:14Tad Eggleston: It's, it's, it's hard to…
- 3:20Tad Eggleston: almost handle and fathom the way poles keep.
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: making… November, which is now… 3 weeks away.
- 3:33Tad Eggleston: Look like… A blue tidal wave.
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: So I think a lot of us are spending a lot of time just waiting for the shoe to drop.
- 3:44Tad Eggleston: Right? Yep.
- 3:46Tad Eggleston: I mean, when Kansas and Texas are legitimately in play.
- 3:54Tad Eggleston: You don't want to let yourself get too ahead of yourself. Yeah.
- 4:03Tad Eggleston: Anything else that anybody else noticed?
- 4:06Phil: I mean…
- 4:10Tyler Johnson: The same old, same old Pete Hicks, Seth, right guys, I don't.
- 4:13Tad Eggleston: Oh, God.
- 4:14Tyler Johnson: wanna.
- 4:14Phil: rooms.
- 4:15Tad Eggleston: Wait, no.
- 4:16Tyler Johnson: Did you guys get… wait.
- 4:18Tyler Johnson: Before we say that, like, did you guys happen to preorder your pay-per-view tickets?
- 4:24Tyler Johnson: No! This is gonna be big, you guys!
- 4:26Phil: No, they're gonna kill a man about this.
- 4:28Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 4:29Tyler Johnson: They're going to live stream it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
- 4:35Tad Eggleston: There are…
- 4:36Phil: Yeah.
- 4:36Tad Eggleston: There are two countries left in the world.
- 4:40Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 4:41Tad Eggleston: That have public executions.
- 4:45Tad Eggleston: Afghanistan and Iran.
- 4:49Tyler Johnson: Well, we got to show our might somehow. God, don't be dicks.
- 4:53Tyler Johnson: I'm just kidding.
- 4:54Tyler Johnson: Well, and…
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: And beyond that, like… By shooting a Muslim in a wheelchair.
- 5:03Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 5:06Tad Eggleston: Can you say recruitment video any louder?
- 5:12Phil: Yeah, that's, had not considered that angle. But, yeah, it was one of those scenarios that…
- 5:18Tad Eggleston: I mean, like…
- 5:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I had tried to forget that, but thanks for bringing it up, because we should say something, because, like.
- 5:26Tyler Johnson: The men there are men on the firing squad just drop it, like
- 5:30Tyler Johnson: off left and right. They're like, no, no, no.
- 5:33Tad Eggleston: yeah!
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: Good!
- 5:35Tyler Johnson: exactly.
- 5:35Phil: That's…
- 5:36Tyler Johnson: Here's the thing. I think Pete Hegseth should have to do it himself.
- 5:40Phil: Oof.
- 5:41Tyler Johnson: load.
- 5:41Phil: No, no, no. You… you… I mean, the reason… the reason I say that is just because, like, like.
- 5:48Phil: I don't know. It's hard to imagine that not being, like, a sick thrill for him, you know?
- 5:53Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, but it also means we absolutely know who to prosecute.
- 5:58Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 5:58Phil: Yeah.
- 5:59Tyler Johnson: Where's his balls at? I mean, come on.
- 6:03Tyler Johnson: I mean, are we in agreement that the man should be executed, or what do you guys think?
- 6:10Phil: I haven't…
- 6:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, I 100% oppose the death penalty in all.
- 6:16Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 6:16Tad Eggleston: is.
- 6:17Phil: Yeah.
- 6:18Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 6:18Phil: I was gonna say, it… it… I… I hadn't… I wasn't as quite clear on my convictions as Tad, but yeah, I don't think we should be executing pretty much anyone. I mean… you know, I mean, if Manson's able to live out in prison for the rest of his life, then yeah, that's…
- 6:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's…
- 6:35Tyler Johnson: I just didn't know if we were talking about just the execution or the public display of it.
- 6:43Phil: The public…
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: Public display of it is, is, like, like, I mean, I'm talking about the public display of it. Yeah. Like, I… I…
- 6:54Tad Eggleston: I oppose… state execution.
- 6:58Tad Eggleston: Across the board, period.
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: But it's one of those things that…
- 7:08Tad Eggleston: I have space for the fact that there are differences of opinion.
- 7:13Tad Eggleston: I have space for the fact, you know, so, like, my… My real…
- 7:23Tad Eggleston: passion lies in just a more equitable justice system. Yeah. A lot of wise… a lot of the reasons that I oppose state execution, period, is that, like.
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: A…
- 7:40Tad Eggleston: if there's even a chance that you get it wrong, you can't come back for it, and B, we don't have a clearly equitable justice system, so, like… Okay.
- 7:50Phil: And we actually don't have a humane method of execution.
- 7:55Tad Eggleston: out.
- 7:55Phil: Yeah.
- 7:56Tad Eggleston: Is there a humane method of execution?
- 7:58Phil: That's the question, but, like, I think that there's a public opinion that lethal injection is the humane method, but it's actually not. It's a pretty…
- 8:07Tad Eggleston: I'm fully aware of that. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:11Phil: Yeah, I didn't think you weren't, but just for any listeners out there.
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: kind.
- 8:13Phil: think that lethal injection is quiet and painless. No, no.
- 8:17Tad Eggleston: Well, and the botched one in Ohio recently.
- 8:21Phil: Botched one in my own state, Tennessee.
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: That's what I meant.
- 8:24Phil: Oh, okay. I didn't know if there was another one.
- 8:27Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no.
- 8:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, they injected her twice, and she's… just came out of her coma.
- 8:34Phil: Yeah.
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: And is walking around right now.
- 8:39Tyler Johnson: In my opinion. Yeah. I mean, they can't kill. They did.
- 8:41Phil: you.
- 8:41Tyler Johnson: She's your she's.
- 8:42Phil: It didn't take. She's good though, right.
- 8:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah, she doesn't.
- 8:45Phil: Released from prison.
- 8:46Tyler Johnson: again.
- 8:46Phil: You know, I mean, that's what that's in my mind. That's like you get a do-over. Or not a do-over, but like you get a you get a jit get out of jail free card for surviving the jewel.
- 8:55Tyler Johnson: situation right now? Like, is she still in prison?
- 8:58Phil: I mean.
- 8:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, well, I mean, she's still in the prison hospital, but… Yeah, no, it's, Okay.
- 9:06Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 9:07Tad Eggleston: It's messy.
- 9:08Tyler Johnson: Technically, she's been executed twice. Well, if it's been two, right.
- 9:14Phil: Inject it twice.
- 9:16Tyler Johnson: Yeah, right, but that's the procedure for execution. She didn't die, that's… I… I don't know.
- 9:23Tad Eggleston: the.
- 9:24Phil: here.
- 9:24Tad Eggleston: No, yeah.
- 9:26Phil: When someone doesn't die.
- 9:27Tad Eggleston: But… but then when… again, like, the… the making it public, I mean, even if it wasn't livestream, just making it public, that…
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: That's not something that civilized nations do.
- 9:42Phil: Yeah, that's not… it's not something that… that I'd want, you know.
- 9:46Phil: in my society. Like, I don't want to contribute to that. I don't want to support that. I'm horrified that it's even…
- 9:54Phil: December 3rd, I think, is what I heard?
- 9:57Phil: But still, it's, it's, you know…
- 10:00Tad Eggleston: I mean, it seems to even have some people in the Trump administration, including Trump himself, a little squeamish, so we'll see if it actually does happen, but…
- 10:10Phil: I was gonna say, is he squeamish, or is it just dementia kicking him hard?
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: I, you know,
- 10:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it doesn't even matter.
- 10:24Tad Eggleston: Doesn't even matter.

- 26:18Tad Eggleston: 14. So, so, yeah.
- 26:22Tyler Johnson: Next up, we got 50 essential fanographic titles. We were reading through a few of these, these are awesome. $25 gets you 51 items going to the Freedom of the Press Foundation for
- 26:35Tyler Johnson: Again, October 7th, but this one is still up, let me check, let me check… Phantographics has…
- 26:45Tyler Johnson: Several days left… 12 days left. Okay, so that's been extended to the 22nd.
- 26:52Phil: So we could do it again!
- 26:53Phil: Yep. Warfare.
- 26:54Tad Eggleston: Good.
- 26:56Tad Eggleston: We could.
- 26:57Tyler Johnson: Batman Day Comics Bundle, book, $20 for 31 items goes to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. I'm gonna look on that one as well, because it expires today, the 10th, but…
- 27:12Tyler Johnson: Yeah, in 4 hours, so by the time…
- 27:14Phil: Absolutely.
- 27:15Tyler Johnson: hear this, Batman will be a moot point. Sorry about that.
- 27:18Tad Eggleston: That one probably…
- 27:19Phil: Money.
- 27:20Tad Eggleston: That one probably will be, too.
- 27:22Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 27:23Tad Eggleston: We forgot to put in a date on Dark Places.
- 27:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 27:27Tad Eggleston: What's the date on that one?
- 27:28Tyler Johnson: Dark Places and Endless Night share order from IDW $18 gets 33 items in your basket, and I'm looking right now. Dark Places has got 11 days left.
- 27:41Tyler Johnson: So that's gonna go to the 21st, you guys.
- 27:45Tyler Johnson: Let's see here. And that's gonna go $18 for 33 items, including Beneath the Trees, Lock and Key, goes to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation.
- 27:57Tyler Johnson: And that is it for our Humble Bundles right now.
- 28:04Tad Eggleston: Amazing books this week. There were a lot.
- 28:07Tyler Johnson: basic.
- 28:08Tad Eggleston: books this week.
- 28:09Tad Eggleston: But I'm gonna lead off with…
- 28:14Tad Eggleston: Moon Eaters from Victor Santos at Titan. This, this… graphic novel was… Like… 3 parts, Elmore Leonard.
- 28:28Tad Eggleston: Crime thriller, and… and… one part Creature feature, one part.
- 28:38Tad Eggleston: Cult horror.
- 28:41Tad Eggleston: And it was just all parts fantastically good, compelling, can't put it down. This was so good. Victor Santos knocks it out again with Moon Eaters.
- 28:53Tad Eggleston: Dinner date number one from Joanne Starer and Carrie Randolph at.
- 28:59Tad Eggleston: Ignition was also a absolute killer.
- 29:03Tad Eggleston: First issue.
- 29:05Tad Eggleston: With a nice twist that I'm not gonna give away. And, Starhenge, Book 2, A Kiss for Atticus, number 4, from Liam Sharp at Image. I felt like I hadn't talked about this book enough since we talked to Liam, so I had to…
- 29:22Tad Eggleston: had to definitely, bring attention to it. I continue to find Starhenge to be one of the…
- 29:29Tad Eggleston: The greatest comics of this.
- 29:31Tad Eggleston: This…
- 29:32Tad Eggleston: century, and Liam is just, like, killing it. So if you're not reading Starhenish, go get this, and it hopefully will be collected soon.
- 29:46Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 29:47Tyler Johnson: Also.
- 29:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Tyler. You had the demon in there. I was about to put that one as one of my top three, as well as Crowbound number two. But in the end, I went with Beneath the Trees, the Halloween special just came out from Patrick Horvath.
- 30:05Tyler Johnson: That was really good. Holy buckets. I really enjoyed that.
- 30:09Tyler Johnson: Minor Arcana number 19 from Jeff Lemire and Boom. That series is crazy, because I just picked up the deluxe slipcase edition of, like, that just came out for the first arc or whatever, and now I am stuck buying those versions because I'm a completist.
- 30:29Tyler Johnson: Kyle & and OCD and everything else. So yes, it's going to be a minor arcana year for me. Number 19 was awesome.
- 30:39Tyler Johnson: And then Something is Killing the Children, number 50 from James Tennion IV and Werther Deladera from Boom.
- 30:48Tyler Johnson: I haven't been reading it ongoing, but I did pick up the 50th and just, you know, kind of catch myself up real quick to see what was going on. And I'm going to have to go back and fill in the gaps because that was really good.
- 31:04Tyler Johnson: Phil, a walk with Phil.
- 31:06Phil: Yeah, yeah, I had a weird week. It was, you know, work's starting to get more, stressful and complicated, so I, I…
- 31:15Phil: feel like this week was simultaneously 2 weeks long, like, there was a week between Tuesday and Wednesday somehow, and then, it felt like I was just talking to you guys, like, 5 minutes ago, so…
- 31:27Phil: Weird.
- 31:27Tyler Johnson: You mean last week?
- 31:28Phil: Yeah, yeah, you know, so it's… it's… it's all kinds of, you know, my sense of time.
- 31:34Tyler Johnson: With your new job, what's happening?
- 31:37Phil: Oh, I mean, it's just the work I actually have to do is complicated, and I don't know how to do it all yet, so it's, you know.
- 31:46Phil: Yeah, turns out computers are a heck of a thing.
- 31:51Tyler Johnson: I found something that may cheer you up. It is a poster of a kitten hanging from a tree branch, and it says.
- 31:58Tyler Johnson: Hang in there.
- 31:59Phil: I was gonna say, I mean, that's… that's… I get that… I get that every day with this little guy. You got your…
- 32:04Tyler Johnson: Cat. I got my new puppy.
- 32:08Phil: Yep.
- 32:09Tyler Johnson: This.
- 32:09Phil: Tad, where's your animal companion?
- 32:11Tyler Johnson: This is…
- 32:12Tad Eggleston: I closed the door to keep him out of here.
- 32:14Phil: Oh, this is pepper.
- 32:15Tyler Johnson: Pots, you guys.
- 32:16Phil: Pepper Potts, yep.
- 32:18Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I call it pepperoni pots.
- 32:20Phil: That's funny, that's a good one.
- 32:22Tyler Johnson: But…
- 32:23Phil: So, so, after, after we're done recording, because we're doing this on Saturday instead of, Sundays like we have been, kind of, sort of, I'm gonna be finishing reading Garden of Sears today, since, you know, I enjoyed it so much last week. And, then, other than that, this week, the only other, you know.
- 32:39Phil: comics thing that I've really gotten into. On Blue Sky, there's an account
- 32:44Phil: called HARP, the, H-A-A-R-P-B, that does really hilarious, like.
- 32:54Phil: hastily drawn comics of just, like, you know, just generic blobs. They will do funny drawings of cats, and they've got, like, kind of an ongoing series, about.
- 33:09Phil: Oh,
- 33:11Phil: two girls in high school who one is, like, you know, the dirtbag stoner that is obviously a lesbian, and the other is, like, a popular girl who gets a crush on her, and their dynamic together is just hilarious, and it's great. It's really, really great. It was one of those things where…
- 33:31Phil: someone just… reposted the latest ones. I don't even remember who.
- 33:36Phil: And I started reading, I was like, wow, this is really good, I'm seeing this… this is starting with number 11. Oh, I should probably go back and… and it was a… it was a deep run back, but oh, yeah, it was absolutely fantastic for, like.
- 33:47Phil: chaotic DIY, I'm reading it as maybe autobiographical, but I maybe shouldn't, I don't know, who knows? But it's good, it's great.
- 33:58Phil: And then I keep grabbing the wrong mouse. Yeah, and then that's, you know, anything else I should read today?
- 34:04Phil: Because I actually, I'm… well, I'm between… Too many good things.
- 34:07Tad Eggleston: Read hard.
- 34:08Tyler Johnson: Oh, man. What should you read?
- 34:11Phil: Well, I mean, I'm waiting for, the rest of Goodnight Pun Pun I put in for the last 4 volumes, because, you know, the trend has been, like.
- 34:20Phil: I wait, like, a month to get in a volume, and then I read it the day it shows up at the library, so…
- 34:26Tyler Johnson: the.
- 34:27Phil: Now that I'm moving… yeah, now that I'm… now that I'm…
- 34:29Phil: moving soon. I'm like, you know what, I'm just gonna request all these at once, and…
- 34:32Tyler Johnson: You should find out, find out from,
- 34:37Tyler Johnson: your new city, go Cincinnati, find out first before you go where the comic shops are, where the library is. Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 34:45Phil: off.
- 34:45Tyler Johnson: Scope all that stuff out ahead of time, so that when you get there, you're, like, integrated already.
- 34:50Phil: Yeah, yeah, that's the plan. I mean, I'm hoping that.
- 34:54Phil: you know, once we know 100%, because we've still been, like, you know, locking down a place because we're renting, so just the time frame of it all has been weird, and yeah, then I'll, you know, because right now, it's like, I don't want to arbitrarily pick a shop and then be like.
- 35:08Phil: Oh, that one's all the way across town, and this other one is right next to home. So yeah, so it's gonna be, absolutely scoping all that out.
- 35:17Tyler Johnson: Do you have to sell your house or are you renting the current one?
- 35:20Phil: We're in an apartment, so… Yeah.
- 35:23Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 35:23Phil: Yeah, okay.
- 35:26Tyler Johnson: You know, I can't tell from the photo. It is.
- 35:28Phil: It, you know, yeah, my wife does a great job of disguising how, beige our apartment is, so, yeah.
- 35:37Phil: So Tad was also becalmed in our.
- 35:41Tad Eggleston: I was…
- 35:42Phil: race.
- 35:43Tad Eggleston: I was becalmed.
- 35:44Phil: That's okay.
- 35:45Tad Eggleston: Must be calmed. But I was gonna say that, that you will need to… When… when…
- 35:54Tad Eggleston: When you have, when you have, have finished your, your…
- 36:02Tad Eggleston: moving, we'll have to figure out where you are in connection to Carol Tyler.
- 36:09Phil: Oh!
- 36:10Tad Eggleston: Cincinnati.
- 36:11Phil: Very cool.
- 36:12Phil: Yeah, that's awesome. That's… I mean, did she do, Ephemerata?
- 36:18Phil: Yeah. Okay, cool. I am thinking of the right person. Yeah, that one looked really… I remember you saying it was really great, so I still need to read that one, but yeah.
- 36:26Phil: That's… that's actually one of the big draws to Cincinnati for us, is, also, you know, my wife is, since the job market's
- 36:34Phil: rough out there, especially for creatives. She is basically, going all in on crafting, and has found, like, a local store to sell, her cards. She's making a bunch of card sets and, stained glass stuff. So, you know.
- 36:50Phil: Cincinnati seems like a cool town for local artists, stuff like that. So that's perfect.
- 36:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's supposed to be a pretty good town.
- 36:58Phil: Yeah.
- 36:59Tad Eggleston: And the people I've known from there have liked it there.
- 37:03Phil: Yeah.
- 37:04Phil: Yes.
- 37:06Phil: But we're talking Orla this week, aren't we?
- 37:09Tad Eggleston: We are. I know Tyler and I had read it before.
- 37:12Phil: Yeah, I'd read,
- 37:13Tad Eggleston: Now, I don't know what you'd read.
- 37:16Phil: I'd read the first issue, and… was immediately like, holy shit, this is great, I need to read the rest of this. But I think it was.
- 37:24Tad Eggleston: We should really quickly point out that.
- 37:27Tad Eggleston: The reason that Orla popped onto our radar this week is it was a wonderful surprise to see it on the New York Public Library's Top 50 Graphic Novels for Adults this year.
- 37:42Phil: Really good.
- 37:43Tad Eggleston: And, like, deserving.
- 37:46Phil: just.
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: flown enough under the radar that it… that I was a little surprised to see it there, and happy that somebody beyond Tyler and I liked it.
- 37:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, because I knew how much we liked it on 22 panels, and I knew other people should like it!
- 38:05Tyler Johnson: I.
- 38:05Tad Eggleston: hadn't felt like it had gotten that level of attention that it deserved. So, it was really cool to see it on this list.
- 38:12Phil: For being someone who, you know, read the first issue and was intrigued, I did not… I should have jumped on this. I should have jumped on this way harder. The other funny thing is that since, since we were reading it on Global Comics, so my Amazon tablet does not have a Global Comics app, so I was backed… Oh.
- 38:32Tad Eggleston: Oh…
- 38:33Phil: phone.
- 38:34Tad Eggleston: Look how good this book was.
- 38:35Phil: That's how good this book was, is that it read well on the phone, I was still.
- 38:38Tad Eggleston: It does.
- 38:39Phil: Super engaged. Wow. The colors were popping. The twist at the end of issue 4 had my jaw on the floor.
- 38:48Phil: It was… it was great. It's one of those things where I finished reading on the phone, and I was like, holy shit, I need to buy this book so that I can actually have it as a real, real reading experience.
- 38:59Tad Eggleston: So, Tyler, you're the actual retailer here, so give us the front counter pitch.
- 39:04Tyler Johnson: Oh, if you want a really good mini-series from Mad Cave, here's the thing. Anything from Mad Cave lately is just… I… I love them, right? So you can't go wrong with John Lees, you know, the writer from Sync, as well as Sally Cantrino, right, doing her art.
- 39:22Tyler Johnson: I think the art was great for this. And the trade, having all five issues collected is really nice for people to just, I'll be like, here, you need to read this.
- 39:35Phil: I.
- 39:36Tyler Johnson: wrote this is actually a really cool guy, you know?
- 39:38Tad Eggleston: He is, we've talked to him… 5…
- 39:42Tyler Johnson: understand.
- 39:43Tad Eggleston: 6 or 7 times…
- 39:44Phil: I've listened to at least 3 of those episodes, I know.
- 39:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we've had him back.
- 39:51Tyler Johnson: people.
- 39:52Tad Eggleston: Regularly.
- 39:53Tyler Johnson: That Orla is, you know, an antique researcher, I mean, she's obsessed with romance novel romantic crap, you know?
- 40:02Tyler Johnson: And then, I don't know. She's got a man-eating monster inside her. What more can you say?
- 40:09Phil: I was gonna say, this… if… if you… if you, dear… dear reader, listener, have never been exposed to…
- 40:17Phil: subgenre known as Monster Fuckers. This is… this is the Monster Fucker book that everyone should read, even though there's… there's not any… there's just, you know, towards the end, implied, but but yeah, it's… it's really good. Like, seriously, it's one of those books that I'm like.
- 40:33Phil: I… I would… it's… it's earned the high praise. I would recommend this to everyone. Like.
- 40:38Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 40:38Phil: If I… if someone comes along and they don't like this book, I'm… I'm like, why?
- 40:44Phil: What is wrong?
- 40:45Tyler Johnson: If you can imagine, like, if this was a movie, this would be a.
- 40:48Tad Eggleston: Well, that that their problem.
- 40:50Tyler Johnson: It'll be a rock concert with orange.
- 40:51Tad Eggleston: that would be eaten.
- 40:52Phil: Exactly!
- 40:54Tad Eggleston: If you don't like this book, you would be one of the ones that would be eaten.
- 40:58Phil: Yep.
- 40:59Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you guys, this is so fun. This is, I don't know.
- 41:04Tyler Johnson: Like I said, it's like a rom-com. Like, you're like, oh, what's Orla up to? And then you're like, oh, shit!
- 41:11Phil: Yeah, It's one of those.
- 41:14Tyler Johnson: Facebook?
- 41:14Phil: that's… that balance… horror comedy is, like, one of the hardest genre mashups to pull off, but it does it so well. So, so well.
- 41:21Tyler Johnson: Cool.
- 41:22Tyler Johnson: I think…
- 41:22Phil: Sorry to cut you off there.
- 41:24Tyler Johnson: No, no, you're absolutely right, right? And then, I don't know, John is, you know, always doing these horror things, right? From Sync, to his wrestling book, to his… I mean, the Mountainhead that he wrote, it's all horror-esque stuff.
- 41:42Tyler Johnson: And so the fact that he's trying to tackle this.
- 41:46Tyler Johnson: kind of, like, Interesting angle of the dating scene in… is it Seattle or Portland or something?
- 41:53Phil: Seattle.
- 41:53Tyler Johnson: You know… It's crazy. I think it's just… completely.
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: Well, and it should be pointed out.
- 42:00Tyler Johnson: He writes.
- 42:00Tad Eggleston: John lives in Scotland, so, like… Correct. Getting the feel of Seattle that well is… is also…
- 42:09Phil: Does… does, Sally live in Seattle? Is that it?
- 42:13Phil: Or…
- 42:15Tyler Johnson: International.
- 42:16Tad Eggleston: CAC.
- 42:17Tyler Johnson: I don't remember. But John is really good at writing, like, for example, the wrestling book that he wrote, really captured the fun and…
- 42:32Tyler Johnson: I guess showmanship of American wrestling, right? The, you know, the…
- 42:39Tyler Johnson: the scripted wrestling scenario, right? Like he he captured that really well in his book, and I I thought it was really cool.
- 42:48Tyler Johnson: Hey, yeah.
- 42:49Tad Eggleston: He's from Glasgow.
- 42:50Tad Eggleston: Sally is originally from New Jersey, but it's not clear at her website whether she's still there.
- 42:58Phil: I see.
- 42:59Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah.
- 43:00Phil: Alright.
- 43:02Tyler Johnson: Okay. Well, guys, Orla, obviously, John, I've talked about this many times. John is a good friend.
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: Oh, John's awesome.
- 43:10Tyler Johnson: And he's so fun to talk to because he talks very fast in his Glasgowian accent. And so you're like, I think I got that.
- 43:20Tad Eggleston: region.
- 43:21Tyler Johnson: Glass Weegean, yeah.
- 43:23Tad Eggleston: Maybe.
- 43:24Tyler Johnson: But anyway, it it's just great. It's so fun to talk to him.
- 43:29Tyler Johnson: So I can't wait to hear all about this book when you talk to John again.
- 43:34Phil: I…
- 43:34Tyler Johnson: Did you talk to him about Orla yet, Ted?
- 43:37Tad Eggleston: I talked to John and Sally about Orla, but they might…
- 43:41Tad Eggleston: Come back to talk about it again.
- 43:44Phil: I mean, especially if there's a sequel. I want a sequel to this, dammit. I want the ongoing saga of Orla, you know?
- 43:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 43:53Tyler Johnson: You guys think it's weird that like Sally's art has to capture, you know, that cuteness, that swoon, that romanticism, and then, and then the gore.
- 44:03Phil: Yeah, and then turn on a dime. That, that was… she's so good at it. She's so good.
- 44:07Tyler Johnson: better.
- 44:08Phil: having, like, a sweet, like, romantic sort of googly eyes, and then tearing somebody in half. Like, seriously, it's so fucking good.
- 44:17Tyler Johnson: You're like God, where is this going to go? Orla's so excited for this date or whatever.
- 44:21Phil: Right.
- 44:22Tyler Johnson: the.
- 44:24Phil: The other funny thing, I don't know about you guys, but I read Gwen, her love interest, as a fictional version of John.
- 44:33Tyler Johnson: Did you?
- 44:33Phil: I did. I very much did. I hope… I'm sure he'd be okay with it, given that he's, like, the one decent guy in the book.
- 44:43Phil: Yeah.
- 44:43Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 44:45Tyler Johnson: I, you know, I know this is kind of weird, but I liked it that they depicted Orla as not the stereotypical bombshell lady that everybody's gonna want to go out with.
- 44:57Tyler Johnson: let's be honest, she has a little bit of a hard time finding dates, because, you know, of her size and appearance and stuff like that. And then to eat them, she just totally ruins it, you know?
- 45:08Phil: Well, I mean, like, that's… That's one of the elements that… main, like…
- 45:17Phil: It… I thought it was great because it… handled the subject of, like.
- 45:24Phil: How society treats her without, without feeling cruel at any point. Correct. Like, it… it really…
- 45:35Phil: the whole time felt like everything… things were from Orla's point of view, it was sympathetic towards her, I felt like she had agency throughout the whole book.
- 45:44Phil: And, like, I think that there's… it's really easy, you know, when you have a story that starts with, this girl is not…
- 45:52Phil: a, like you said, a, you know, conventionally attractive, objectifiable character. Correct.
- 46:01Tyler Johnson: But but at the same time, I was never once like, god, why did they bring in this ugly girl for this? I was like Exactly.
- 46:06Phil: Exactly.
- 46:07Tyler Johnson: No.
- 46:08Phil: She looks good!
- 46:09Tyler Johnson: Yes, exactly. It's the kind of…
- 46:11Phil: Yeah, it's the kind of thing where it's like.
- 46:14Phil: it really, it really emphasizes, you know, subliminal, like, or subtextually. It subtextually emphasizes how fucked up society is, that…
- 46:24Phil: you know, Orla is… is even implicitly outcast. You know, that first page of all the various crazy dates she's been on.
- 46:33Phil: This is also… because I showed my wife, like, the first 5 pages of this book, and she's like, I want to read that. So that's the other reason why I need to buy it, is that it's entered the esteemed list of comics she's interested in, you know? Yeah.
- 46:46Phil: So, yeah, and I, I…
- 46:49Phil: you know, if I was a little more prepared, I would have asked her to read it too, and gotten her thoughts, but she's also asleep right now. So, you know.
- 46:58Phil: I don't, I don't, you know, I love my wife so much, but she would, she'd probably be grumpy, being woken up at, like, 7am to talk about a comic book. So, you know.
- 47:09Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I could see that.
- 47:11Phil: So I'll report back. I will report back when she does read it, and… and.
- 47:15Tyler Johnson: Great, that would be perfect.
- 47:17Phil: Yeah.
- 47:17Tyler Johnson: Anyway, guys, I think that was a really good rundown of Oracle.
- 47:22Tad Eggleston: I.
- 47:23Tyler Johnson: you want to add?
- 47:23Tad Eggleston: I do want to toss out that I got to have a surreal experience, too, because I, I shot them an email this week just to congratulate them, and discovered that I was the one informing them that their book was on the news. That's fun. They both missed it.
- 47:41Phil: Wow.
- 47:42Tyler Johnson: Oh, they didn't know there was a New York Times bestseller?
- 47:44Phil: makes.
- 47:45Tad Eggleston: Oh, not bestseller. New York Public Library, best of…
- 47:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I mean.
- 47:50Phil: comics.
- 47:51Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 47:51Phil: adults. Yep. You know, alongside those.
- 47:55Tad Eggleston: place.
- 47:55Phil: of like Fantagraphics and, you know, hoity toity stuff. Yeah. So, yeah.
- 48:01Tad Eggleston: So, Yeah, it was, it was kind of a cool, cool experience.
- 48:07Tad Eggleston: To, to be able to do that. So, anyway, 3 books we hope will be spectacular.
- 48:16Tad Eggleston: Couple of number twos next week that, that, that… Follow after…
- 48:21Tad Eggleston: absolutely outstanding debut issues. So I think I'm often more excited for a number 2 than a number 1.
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 48:33Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I am always excited for a number two.
- 48:36Tad Eggleston: fit.
- 48:37Phil: Who's just more going on really?
- 48:38Tad Eggleston: I get it, I get it, okay.
- 48:41Phil: great.
- 48:41Tad Eggleston: Whatever. You guys. Amen!
- 48:44Tyler Johnson: No, I agree, Tad, I agree. Number two.
- 48:47Tad Eggleston: the.
- 48:48Phil: Number twos tend to make more of a splash, if you know what I mean.
- 48:50Tad Eggleston: No matter how excited I am.
- 48:55Tad Eggleston: about a story before I've read any of it.
- 48:59Tad Eggleston: I'm almost always more excited to see it continue if I loved that first issue.
- 49:07Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 49:07Phil: If fans.
- 49:08Tyler Johnson: Secondly, if the setup is good enough, the second issue is where things just really move.
- 49:16Tad Eggleston: So.
- 49:16Phil: Start to walk.
- 49:19Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 49:21Tad Eggleston: No Gods, No Masters No. 2 from Julio Anta and Jacoby Salcedo at Boom is coming out this week, as well as The Forever Home No. 2 from Christian Ward and Sammy Cavella at Oni.
- 49:35Tad Eggleston: Not a number 2, but a number 3, Batman and Robin Year 1, Dynamic Duos from Mark Waid and Chris Samney rounds out my top 3 that I'm looking for. Books I know are spectacular are the Galactic Baseball League Volume 1,

- 49:56Tad Eggleston: Baseball from Ackie Bright involving actual Major League players, from Viz Comics. And, Worst Man from Branton Stein at Titan. I love this book so much.
- 50:10Tad Eggleston: So, yeah. Also, if you've been sleeping on End of Life from Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh, this week is your opportunity to get caught up with the first tradeback volume.
- 50:22Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 50:24Tad Eggleston: Phil, I like you.
- 50:27Phil: Did you almost call me?
- 50:28Tad Eggleston: I almost called you Tad.
- 50:29Phil: Oh, okay.
- 50:30Tad Eggleston: You Ted, because it's Ted Brandt and Rose Stein.
- 50:33Phil: Oh, there we go, there we go.
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: What's your, giant size trade waiter pick?
- 50:38Phil: That is also Worst Man, from Bradenstein, hitting the American shores, because apparently it was released a couple months ago in the UK.
- 50:46Tad Eggleston: Was it?
- 50:47Phil: Yeah, that's what I believe they said that I think it came out in like August 25th in the UK and then.
- 50:51Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 50:52Phil: is just now coming out in the US.
- 50:55Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 50:55Phil: It sounds great. I'm also excited for their Vertigo book that got announced. I forgot that with the news of note. It's gonna be… I think it's called Dreambound? It's gonna be interacting with the other series, Fanatic, that looks really, really cool.
- 51:08Tad Eggleston: Cool. No, I didn't see… I didn't see the Vertigo news yet. Yeah.

- 51:14Phil: You know? That's very exciting.
- 51:17Tad Eggleston: Very exciting. I've liked their, webtoon comic.
- 51:22Phil: Oh, nice.
- 51:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 51:24Tad Eggleston: So, anyway.
- 51:27Tad Eggleston: I think that wraps us up, and somehow… somehow, once we actually got going, we were… we were pretty tight.
- 51:34Phil: Zipping that mug.
- 51:36Tad Eggleston: Tyler, you want to take us out?
- 51:38Tyler Johnson: Well, before… before I do that, like, I think going forward, you know, we should be able to keep it pretty concise if we're gonna split up, duties for the…
