- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. For do I now persuade men, or God?
- 0:06Speaker 1: Or do I seek to please men? For if I
- 0:10Speaker 1: yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Galatians 1.10 Free me, Lord, from my brothers and sisters
- 0:20Speaker 1: in Christ who are more focused on their own works
- 0:24Speaker 1: than on their faith. Free me from the legalistic Christ
- 0:28Speaker 1: followers who were bent on justifying themselves through the law.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Thank you, Jesus, that by your sacrifice I am saved
- 0:38Speaker 1: by faith and not by my works. Thank you that
- 0:43Speaker 1: I can walk in complete freedom and enjoy my walk
- 0:46Speaker 1: with you, free from the opinions of others. Continue to
- 0:52Speaker 1: allow the fruits of the Spirit to be evident in
- 0:54Speaker 1: my life. I decree and declare that that in Christ
- 0:59Speaker 1: Jesus I am free and unchained. I decree and declare
- 1:05Speaker 1: that I serve you, Lord, by devotion and not obligation.
- 1:11Speaker 1: As I work out my faith in love, I will
- 1:14Speaker 1: walk in freedom and in step with the Spirit. Where
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Spirit of the Lord is, there is always freedom.
- 1:24Speaker 1: There is no bondage in Christ. So, Lord, I thank
- 1:29Speaker 1: you that I don't have to earn my way into heaven,
- 1:33Speaker 1: but because I place my trust and love in you,
- 1:37Speaker 1: you will guide me in the way everlasting. In the
- 1:42Speaker 1: name of Jesus. Amen. Listening to these daily prayers strengthens
- 1:49Speaker 1: your relationship with God. Continue hearing from the Lord by
- 1:53Speaker 1: listening to today's Bible in a Year. Brought to you Dear.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Galatia, In our last story, we learned about certain Jewish
- 2:14Speaker 2: believers forcing Gentiles to be circumcised to be accepted into
- 2:18Speaker 2: the family of God. Outraged by this, Paul and Barnabas
- 2:22Speaker 2: held a council of all the leaders in Jerusalem and
- 2:25Speaker 2: They debated whether Gentiles should be forced to follow the
- 2:28Speaker 2: Jewish customs laid out in the law. The consensus was
- 2:32Speaker 2: a resounding no. Now, we listen in on a letter
- 2:36Speaker 2: Paul wrote to the Galatian church. Paul wrote to the
- 2:40Speaker 2: Galatians because they had men in their midst, teaching them
- 2:43Speaker 2: that all Christians should be circumcised to be saved. Paul's
- 2:47Speaker 2: words would reflect the heart of Jesus as he defends
- 2:50Speaker 2: the grace given by Jesus on the cross, inspired by
- 2:54Speaker 2: the book of Galatians.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 3:01Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 3:06Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 3:08Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional that will give you
- 3:11Speaker 3: fresh encouragement every single morning and day. From the moment
- 3:16Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 3:19Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 3:24Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 3:26Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 3:29Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 3:32Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing
- 3:37Speaker 3: Word by sending you my free daily email devotional, PowerPoint Today.

- 3:48Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our previous time together, we heard
- 3:55Speaker 3: how the Council of Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem, along
- 3:59Speaker 3: with Paul and Barnabas, affirmed that Gentile believers were not
- 4:03Speaker 3: bound to Jewish customs outlined in the law, but should
- 4:06Speaker 3: focus on abstaining from things that would hinder their relationship
- 4:10Speaker 3: with God in Christ, such as sexual immorality and food
- 4:14Speaker 3: sacrifice to idols. Today we'll hear Paul's words to the
- 4:18Speaker 3: church in Galatia and his affirmation of their freedom in Christ.
- 4:22Speaker 3: not because of obedience to the law and things like circumcision,
- 4:26Speaker 3: but because of faith and the grace of God. Let's
- 4:30Speaker 3: hear now the reading from Paul's letter to the Galatians.
- 4:35Speaker 2: To the church in Galatia, grace and peace to you
- 4:38Speaker 2: from our Lord. I am amazed that you would turn
- 4:41Speaker 2: from grace so quickly to adopt another gospel, one of
- 4:45Speaker 2: bondage and works. Let me tell you this. Even if
- 4:49Speaker 2: you see an angel coming down from heaven, preaching another
- 4:52Speaker 2: gospel to you, it is false. I tell you this honestly,
- 4:57Speaker 2: since I do not seek the approval of man, but
- 5:00Speaker 2: of God. If I simply sought to please you, I
- 5:03Speaker 2: would not be a servant of Christ. I need you
- 5:07Speaker 2: to know this, brothers, that the gospel preached by me
- 5:10Speaker 2: to you is not a gospel forged and penned by man.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It is from the heart of Christ himself. You know
- 5:17Speaker 2: my past. You know that I was once a zealous Pharisee,
- 5:21Speaker 2: Hell bent on the destruction of the church. I held
- 5:25Speaker 2: the law tightly and honored it my whole life. But
- 5:29Speaker 2: Jesus called me into grace. So I fled to Arabia
- 5:33Speaker 2: and then Damascus, then to Jerusalem. I wanted to know
- 5:37Speaker 2: what was happening to my heart. I wanted to know Christ.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Those who saw me change glorified Christ. It was not
- 5:46Speaker 2: because I followed the law, but because I was changed
- 5:49Speaker 2: by grace. Fourteen years had passed, and I was traveling
- 5:53Speaker 2: to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus, who was a Gentile.
- 5:57Speaker 2: We did not force him to be circumcised, yet false
- 6:00Speaker 2: brothers tried to bind him into slavery to the old
- 6:03Speaker 2: covenant law. We did not yield in submission to them.
- 6:07Speaker 2: To do so would have been to deny the power
- 6:09Speaker 2: of the gospel. It started to become clear to me
- 6:12Speaker 2: that I was to be an apostle of the Gentiles,
- 6:15Speaker 2: just as Peter was called to the Jews. I want
- 6:18Speaker 2: to tell you something about Peter so that you might
- 6:21Speaker 2: learn from him. Peter would eat with the Gentiles and
- 6:24Speaker 2: fellowship with them, but when his Jewish brothers were present,
- 6:28Speaker 2: he would not speak to them or eat with them.
- 6:31Speaker 2: This was two-faced and not honoring to Christ, so I
- 6:34Speaker 2: opposed him to his face. Peter was supposed to be
- 6:38Speaker 2: an example to us, and instead his conduct was not
- 6:41Speaker 2: in step with the truth. I told him that if he,
- 6:44Speaker 2: being a Jew, was able to live like a Gentile,
- 6:47Speaker 2: then he should not force Gentiles to live like Jews.
- 6:51Speaker 2: It was simple, and Peter received his correction. Let me
- 6:55Speaker 2: make one thing clear. We are Jews by birth, but
- 6:59Speaker 2: it is not our tradition or race that makes us justified.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Our faith in the work of Jesus on the cross
- 7:06Speaker 2: makes us justified. It is not by works that we
- 7:09Speaker 2: attain favor with God, for he is pleased with us
- 7:12Speaker 2: in Jesus. We must die to the law so we
- 7:15Speaker 2: can live in Christ. I have been crucified with Christ.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I am no longer living. It is Jesus who lives
- 7:23Speaker 2: in me. The life we ought to live should be
- 7:26Speaker 2: by faith in Jesus. He has loved us and gave
- 7:29Speaker 2: his life for us. If we gained our righteousness from
- 7:32Speaker 2: our good deeds or following the law, then why would
- 7:35Speaker 2: Christ have died for us? You foolish Galatians! Who has
- 7:40Speaker 2: cast a spell on you that you would turn from
- 7:42Speaker 2: this glorious truth? Some of you saw with your own
- 7:46Speaker 2: eyes Jesus being crucified. Let me ask you this. Did
- 7:50Speaker 2: you receive the Holy Spirit by being perfect?
- 7:53Speaker 3: No.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Are you so dumb that you would now try and
- 7:56Speaker 2: be perfect after receiving grace? Even Abraham was called righteous
- 8:01Speaker 2: because of his faith, not his ability to follow rules.
- 8:05Speaker 2: The truly righteous ones are the ones who look unto
- 8:07Speaker 2: Jesus and have faith in him. The righteous live by faith.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Let me give you an example of what the law
- 8:14Speaker 2: is for. Picture a contract. Every human contract can be
- 8:19Speaker 2: annulled or ratified, but not with God. He keeps His
- 8:23Speaker 2: promises despite our failures. So what good is the law? Well,
- 8:27Speaker 2: the law was our tutor until Christ came. The law
- 8:30Speaker 2: was an image of the perfect character of God. That
- 8:33Speaker 2: character was fulfilled in Jesus. So we look to follow Him,
- 8:37Speaker 2: not the law. That way the gospel is not only
- 8:40Speaker 2: for Jews who follow the law, but for people of
- 8:42Speaker 2: all nationalities who believe in Jesus and follow him. A
- 8:47Speaker 2: child is no freer than a slave until he becomes
- 8:49Speaker 2: a man, so the child must be looked after and protected.
- 8:53Speaker 2: That is what the law did for us. It took
- 8:56Speaker 2: care of us until we were ready to step into maturity.
- 8:59Speaker 2: You are sons, daughters, and heirs to all the gifts
- 9:02Speaker 2: of Jesus. To know Jesus is to be free. So
- 9:06Speaker 2: it concerns me that you are all trying to enslave
- 9:09Speaker 2: yourselves to the law. Stop! I am afraid that all
- 9:13Speaker 2: your effort and labor to be perfect is all in vain.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Brothers and sisters, I beg you, be like me. Let go.
- 9:21Speaker 2: We were close once. You would have laid down your
- 9:24Speaker 2: life for me. But now I feel like I am
- 9:26Speaker 2: your enemy just because I preach to you the truth.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I am perplexed and disturbed by you. Christ has set
- 9:34Speaker 2: us free to walk in liberty. The ability to do
- 9:37Speaker 2: what is good and noble comes from a place of freedom,
- 9:40Speaker 2: not bondage. Do not be slaves to mindless devotion. If
- 9:44Speaker 2: you decide that one must be circumcised to be saved,
- 9:47Speaker 2: then you put yourself under the bondage of the whole law.
- 9:50Speaker 2: You cannot pick and choose. You either follow the whole law,
- 9:54Speaker 2: or you follow the one who has made you righteous.
- 9:58Speaker 2: It is not about being circumcised. it is about working
- 10:01Speaker 2: out your faith.
- 10:02Speaker 1: In love.
- 10:04Speaker 2: You are doing so well tell me who has whispered
- 10:08Speaker 2: lies in your ears who has hindered you from speaking
- 10:11Speaker 2: the truth know this that a little bit of leaven
- 10:15Speaker 2: can ruin the whole loaf of bread the same is
- 10:18Speaker 2: with people Honestly, I wish that those who told you
- 10:22Speaker 2: you needed to be circumcised would just cut off their
- 10:25Speaker 2: privates altogether. For you were called to freedom and they
- 10:29Speaker 2: have set you back. Walk in freedom. Do not use
- 10:33Speaker 2: your freedom as an opportunity to sin. Serve one another.
- 10:37Speaker 2: For the entire law is truly fulfilled in these words.
- 10:40Speaker 2: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you
- 10:44Speaker 2: insist on devouring one another, take heed lest you all
- 10:47Speaker 2: consume yourselves into oblivion. If you keep in step with
- 10:51Speaker 2: the Spirit, you will have no need of laws, for
- 10:54Speaker 2: He will guide you. For the desires of the Spirit
- 10:57Speaker 2: will oppose the flesh. For the fruit of the flesh
- 10:59Speaker 2: is obvious, fits of rage, rivalries, division, envy, drunkenness, selfish
- 11:05Speaker 2: sexual gratification, jealousy, idolatry, and all sorts of rage that
- 11:10Speaker 2: break instead of build. But the fruit of the Spirit
- 11:13Speaker 2: is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness. faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- 11:23Speaker 2: If you have these things, you have no need of law.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yet we all fail. We all fall in some way.
- 11:30Speaker 2: So let us restore one another in gentleness. If anyone
- 11:33Speaker 2: is caught in sin, let us help. Bear one another's
- 11:37Speaker 2: burdens and take heed of your heart. For whoever thinks
- 11:40Speaker 2: they have reached the heights of holiness are sure to
- 11:43Speaker 2: be brought low. Take care of one another. As you
- 11:47Speaker 2: can see, I have written this letter with my own hand,
- 11:50Speaker 2: for my eyesight is failing me and the words are
- 11:52Speaker 2: large on the page. Understand these large words of mine?
- 11:57Speaker 2: Far be it from me to boast except in the
- 11:59Speaker 2: cross of Jesus Christ. From now on, let no one
- 12:02Speaker 2: cause anybody else to stumble. May the grace of the
- 12:06Speaker 2: Lord Jesus be upon you. Amen.
- 12:11Speaker 3: We begin today's reading with Paul's surprise at how quickly
- 12:15Speaker 3: the believers in Galatia had lost the point of the
- 12:17Speaker 3: gospel and were trying to add requirements to the grace
- 12:20Speaker 3: of God in Christ and subject themselves again to bondage.
- 12:26Speaker 3: There were Jews among them who insisted that believers needed
- 12:29Speaker 3: to also follow the requirements of the law in order
- 12:32Speaker 3: to be saved. And Paul is unequivocal in his words.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Anything different than the gospel of God's grace through Christ
- 12:41Speaker 3: and Christ alone is a false gospel. To make this
- 12:45Speaker 3: point even stronger, Paul told them that even if an
- 12:49Speaker 3: angel were to come down and give them a different gospel,
- 12:52Speaker 3: that angel would be cursed. The reminder to the Galatians
- 12:57Speaker 3: is one that we should heed today as well. If
- 13:00Speaker 3: you try to add to the gospel, whether you're subtracting
- 13:03Speaker 3: it or adding to it, you end up with a lie.
- 13:06Speaker 3: is subtraction or is addition or subtraction by addition. As
- 13:12Speaker 3: Paul told these believers, he of all people would know
- 13:15Speaker 3: that following the law does not save. And to be
- 13:20Speaker 3: saved means to know God and to be forgiven of
- 13:22Speaker 3: sins and to know eternal life. So how is one saved?
- 13:27Speaker 3: Not by works of the law. Before his conversion, he
- 13:30Speaker 3: was an example of piety and zealousness among Jewish believers.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Paul knew the law backwards and forwards, inside and out.
- 13:39Speaker 3: He followed it to the letter and even persecuted those
- 13:42Speaker 3: who preached the gospel he is now advancing. Paul argued
- 13:46Speaker 3: that if the law could have made him justified before God,
- 13:50Speaker 3: it would have, but it did not because the law
- 13:53Speaker 3: cannot save. His life was changed because he embraced Jesus
- 13:58Speaker 3: Christ as his Lord and Savior and God's grace in
- 14:01Speaker 3: order to save him. He then gave the example of Titus.
- 14:05Speaker 3: a Gentile, a Greek man who came to faith in
- 14:07Speaker 3: Christ and joined Paul and Barnabas on their missionary journey.
- 14:12Speaker 3: There were Jewish believers who tried to impose the burden
- 14:14Speaker 3: of circumcision and Jewish law on Titus, but Paul defended
- 14:19Speaker 3: him and refused to let him be subject to the
- 14:21Speaker 3: bondage of legalism, which would strip away the power of
- 14:24Speaker 3: the gospel. Paul even confronted Peter, an apostle and the
- 14:29Speaker 3: leader of the church. Paul had witnessed Peter eating with
- 14:32Speaker 3: Gentiles when Jews were not around, but separating himself from
- 14:36Speaker 3: them when Jews were present. By his hypocritical actions, Peter
- 14:40Speaker 3: was creating a division between Jews and Gentiles, and this
- 14:44Speaker 3: was inconsistent with the gospel. Not only that, it was
- 14:48Speaker 3: robbing the gospel of its power. Paul called on Peter
- 14:52Speaker 3: to examine his own life and to experience the freedom
- 14:56Speaker 3: in Christ, the freedom that we have because of what
- 14:59Speaker 3: Christ has done, not because of what the law has done.
- 15:02Speaker 3: If Peter could enjoy his freedom, How could he not
- 15:06Speaker 3: allow others to experience that same freedom in Christ? It
- 15:11Speaker 3: takes courage to stand up for the truth, especially when
- 15:14Speaker 3: a leader may be more mature and yet is wrong
- 15:17Speaker 3: at acting in a way that undermines the power of
- 15:19Speaker 3: the gospel. Paul was willing to confront Peter for the
- 15:23Speaker 3: sake of the advancement of Jesus Christ and the message
- 15:27Speaker 3: of the gospel. Paul's example is one of encouragement for
- 15:30Speaker 3: all of us to stand boldly and courageously for the
- 15:33Speaker 3: truth of God's word and the power of God's message.
- 15:38Speaker 3: And as Paul continued his letter, he reminded the Galatians
- 15:41Speaker 3: just what that truth is. Justification does not come from
- 15:46Speaker 3: our human efforts, but by faith. And the object of
- 15:49Speaker 3: our faith is Jesus. It is our faith in Christ
- 15:53Speaker 3: that makes us righteous, not our works. To bring this
- 15:56Speaker 3: point home, Paul said that if the law made people righteous,
- 15:59Speaker 3: then Jesus died for nothing. Why then, if we have
- 16:03Speaker 3: righteousness through faith in Christ and Christ alone, would these
- 16:07Speaker 3: Galatians look to the law to make them righteous? Paul
- 16:10Speaker 3: then pointed back to the first patriarch, to Abraham himself,
- 16:15Speaker 3: to explain that righteousness by faith is nothing new. Righteousness
- 16:19Speaker 3: has always come through faith, not works. Abraham believed God,
- 16:24Speaker 3: and his faith was credited to him as righteous. The
- 16:28Speaker 3: law was not given to make people righteous, but as
- 16:30Speaker 3: a guardian, a guide, a teacher, until the time when
- 16:33Speaker 3: Christ came to set all people free. Not only Jews,
- 16:38Speaker 3: but people of all nations. Listen to what Paul writes
- 16:42Speaker 3: in Galatians 3, 25-28 about what Jesus has done for us.
- 16:47Speaker 3: These are powerful words. But now that faith has come,
- 16:51Speaker 3: we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ
- 16:54Speaker 3: Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. For
- 16:57Speaker 3: as many of you as were baptized into Christ have
- 17:00Speaker 3: put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek. There
- 17:04Speaker 3: is neither slave nor free. There is no male and female,
- 17:08Speaker 3: for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Don't miss
- 17:13Speaker 3: how profound this statement is. We are the children of God.
- 17:18Speaker 3: We are the sons and daughters of God, heirs to
- 17:20Speaker 3: the promises of Christ. We have been adopted into his
- 17:24Speaker 3: eternal family, God's forever family. And it's all because of
- 17:28Speaker 3: what Jesus has done for us. This adoption means that
- 17:32Speaker 3: we are truly free and favored by God. Paul calls
- 17:36Speaker 3: the Galatians to not walk away from this freedom, but
- 17:38Speaker 3: rather to walk in it. It is a freedom to
- 17:41Speaker 3: love and serve God fully. But Paul knew also he
- 17:45Speaker 3: needed to caution against misunderstanding this freedom. Our freedom in
- 17:49Speaker 3: Christ is not licensed to live in sin as we please.
- 17:52Speaker 3: It is a freedom to live by God's grace in
- 17:55Speaker 3: the power of his spirit. He then explained what it
- 17:58Speaker 3: looks like to live by God's Spirit, giving us the
- 18:01Speaker 3: fruit of the Spirit, love and joy and peace and
- 18:04Speaker 3: patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self-control.
- 18:09Speaker 3: All of this flows out of a life committed to
- 18:12Speaker 3: follow Jesus Christ. The work of the Holy Spirit is
- 18:16Speaker 3: to fuel us for godly living and to fill us
- 18:20Speaker 3: that we might produce the fruit of the Spirit. The
- 18:23Speaker 3: fruit of the Spirit is Christlikeness. And he reproduces himself
- 18:27Speaker 3: in us by the power and the presence of the
- 18:30Speaker 3: Holy Spirit. Finally, Paul concludes by acknowledging that we will fail.
- 18:36Speaker 3: And he impressed upon the Galatians that they must support
- 18:39Speaker 3: and encourage one another and bear one another's burdens. The
- 18:43Speaker 3: Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. It
- 18:46Speaker 3: was true then and it's true today. Dear God, we
- 18:50Speaker 3: thank you for this powerful letter that Paul gave to
- 18:52Speaker 3: the Galatians and to us. We are so grateful that
- 18:56Speaker 3: we are not saved by our own works because we
- 18:58Speaker 3: could only fail. But by your grace, through your cross,
- 19:02Speaker 3: in the power of your resurrection, we are saved from
- 19:05Speaker 3: our sins. You live in our lives and we can
- 19:07Speaker 3: live forever with you, all because of Christ. God, help
- 19:12Speaker 3: us to walk in the fullness, in the freedom, in
- 19:14Speaker 3: the favor that you have given us in Christ. And
- 19:17Speaker 3: may we live to humbly serve you and point others
- 19:20Speaker 3: to your son. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
