  Is this how we should interpret the question that Jesus asks of

  Peter? Do you love me even three times?

  Is Peter here in trouble? Is this because of his betrayal
• 0:41
  in the courtyard of the high priest?
• 0:44
  Personally, I don't think so. Peter is not a coward,
• 0:49
  definitely not in the story that John tells us.
• 0:53
  When Peter was arrested or when Jesus was arrested, it was Peter
• 0:57
  who came into action and cut off the ear of the servant of the
• 1:00
  high priest. And when the soldiers brought
• 1:03
  Jesus to the high priest, Peter and another, another disciple
• 1:09
  followed him and he managed to get into the courtyard to see
• 1:13
  what was going on. And yes, there Peter denied
• 1:17
  Jesus, or he denied that he was a disciple of him.

  But does that make him a coward? On the day of Easter, it was
• 1:28
  Peter who immediately ran to the tomb after the disciples had
• 1:32
  heard the news of Mary and Peter was the 1st to go into the tomb.

  Peter, I think, is a man of courage, sometimes a bit
• 1:43
  impulsive over evaluating his capabilities.

  When Jesus predicted Peter's denial, it was in response to

  Peter's words that he would follow Jesus wherever he would
• 1:56
  go and that he would even give his life to him.

  There Jesus corrected Peter and corrected his misjudgment of
• 2:07
  himself. Peter, you are not as good as
• 2:10
  you think you are. But Peter is still a courageous
• 2:15
  disciple. So why is Jesus asking this
• 2:20
  question Do you love me? This is the third encounter
• 2:26
  after Easter of Jesus and his disciples and the last one that
• 2:31
  John reports. The focus of the conversation is
• 2:35
  not on the things that have happened, but it is on the
• 2:38
  future. Jesus does not only ask this
• 2:41
  question do you love me? But he also gives three times
• 2:46
  the same command. Tent my sheep focused on the
• 2:49
  future, The encounter between Jesus and Peter feels more like
• 2:54
  an installation ceremony than an interrogation.
• 2:59
  And for me, the key is what Jesus says to Peter about his
• 3:05
  future, where he says in my own words.
• 3:08
  As you get older, you will not determine what you want, but it
• 3:13
  will be decided for you. And after these words, Peter
• 3:19
  hears these words of Jesus follow me.
• 3:24
  And in this, these two words follow me that we need to
• 3:27
  connect to the question, do you love me?
• 3:32
  Because we follow what we love, We follow Jesus because we love
• 3:40
  him. When following Jesus brings his
• 3:42
  benefit, fulfillment and blessing.
• 3:45
  The following is rewarding and a joy, but when the following
• 3:49
  catch stuff, when it is more than we're able to bear, when we
• 3:53
  feel incompetent or we cannot do the things that we would like to
• 3:57
  do or with that we feel competent in, then we will still
• 4:02
  follow Jesus because we truly love him, not because it is so
• 4:08
  rewarding. So the question of Jesus, do you
• 4:12
  love me is an important one. Are you fully convinced that
• 4:19
  Jesus is the only one who can save, the only one who can give
• 4:23
  meaning and fulfillment to life? Are you 100% sure that He is the
• 4:29
  way, the truth, and the life? That's the question that Jesus
• 4:34
  is asking of all of us. It's the question we need to ask
• 4:38
  to each other. Do you love Jesus?
• 4:43
  Do you really love Jesus? Do you fully love Jesus?
