- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome aboard. It's the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We get
- 0:03Speaker 1: together with Jim Moore usually Tuesdays, but this week Wednesday
- 0:06Speaker 1: because the women had a game at Annapolis against Louisville
- 0:11Speaker 1: to kick their season off. So here we are coach
- 0:13Speaker 1: midweek talking about Yukon and Duke the upcoming game. But
- 0:18Speaker 1: let's talk about UAB first. The emotions of losing in
- 0:23Speaker 1: overtime two weeks ago. We talked about it on the
- 0:26Speaker 1: show last week. I thought the guys responded really well.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I mean that first half that Yukon put together to
- 0:32Speaker 1: get into the locker room with a zero on the
- 0:36Speaker 1: scoreboard for UAB, I thought was pretty impressive because you
- 0:39Speaker 1: just don't know, you feel good about the team during
- 0:42Speaker 1: the week, and you talked about it, how they were
- 0:44Speaker 1: getting by things that had not gone their way in
- 0:47Speaker 1: the overtime loss. But your take on that when you
- 0:51Speaker 1: got to the locker room at halftime, what was your thinking?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, I was proud of the way they came well,
- 0:58Speaker 2: first of all, I was proud of the way they
- 0:59Speaker 2: in a handle the whole week, which I told you
- 1:01Speaker 2: think that before the game in our interview, and I
- 1:03Speaker 2: thought that they'd done a really good job of fighting
- 1:06Speaker 2: through the disappointment of the third overtime loss.
- 1:09Speaker 3: I mean, those things are heartbreakers.
- 1:11Speaker 2: They take a toll on you, and they our guys
- 1:13Speaker 2: showed maturity and confidence to overcome it, and they had
- 1:15Speaker 2: a great week of practice, and then I thought, you know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: them going forward on that fourth and four and us
- 1:22Speaker 2: making the stop right before half was really a morale
- 1:25Speaker 2: booster for us. Had they gotten the end zone or
- 1:28Speaker 2: kicked a field going put a three or seven up there,
- 1:31Speaker 2: it would have just, you know, it would have been
- 1:32Speaker 2: a little bit of a downer going in.
- 1:34Speaker 3: But the energy was great, and.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I just was proud of them, you know, and it's
- 1:39Speaker 2: what I expect of them, though, you know, I think
- 1:41Speaker 2: it's what they expect of themselves, which is more important
- 1:43Speaker 2: than anything.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Right, you're building a team here every year. With the
- 1:48Speaker 1: world we're in, you got to build a team again,
- 1:51Speaker 1: so you know, you get through adversity. Yukon's had some
- 1:54Speaker 1: adversity this year. Handling adversity, that's the question I guess
- 1:59Speaker 1: going forward when things don't go your way and the
- 2:03Speaker 1: team seems to have but able to do it. Because
- 2:05Speaker 1: three overtime losses that could crush some teams, but not
- 2:08Speaker 1: this one.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Well, it's about being resilient, having faith in the work
- 2:14Speaker 2: that we do, trusting your teammate, trusting the scheme and
- 2:17Speaker 2: the staff, moving through you know, I mean, really learning
- 2:22Speaker 2: how to deal with adversity, which is, you know, make
- 2:25Speaker 2: sure that you learn the lessons, you apply them, and
- 2:29Speaker 2: do all you can to make sure that that adversity
- 2:31Speaker 2: is temporary. You know, it takes a bit. It takes
- 2:33Speaker 2: mental toughness, which we talk a lot about. We try
- 2:36Speaker 2: to put these guys in high pressure situations as much
- 2:40Speaker 2: as we can. We will create failure at times so
- 2:44Speaker 2: that they learn how to move through it. And uh,
- 2:46Speaker 2: I think that's just really important. And our guys, I
- 2:50Speaker 2: just believe that they have a high level of trust
- 2:53Speaker 2: and confidence in each other.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Jim Moore, You've got football coach with us, Mike Crispino.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You know, people in sports will use the term short memory.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You got to have a short memory in every sport,
- 3:04Speaker 1: doesn't matter which one could be tennis, could be baseball,
- 3:08Speaker 1: could be basketball, it could be football. So what goes
- 3:12Speaker 1: into that. I mean, you got to turn it off
- 3:15Speaker 1: if something went against you, even in a game, right,
- 3:18Speaker 1: if you get your cornerback, you get beat for a touchdown,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you got to forget about it, and that, to me
- 3:23Speaker 1: can be very difficult.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think it's one of the biggest challenges in life really,
- 3:29Speaker 2: right and certainly in athletics where it's demonstrated on the
- 3:32Speaker 2: field and everyone's seeing it. It takes a certain type
- 3:37Speaker 2: of person to be able to learn the learn what happened,
- 3:40Speaker 2: why it happened, fix it, and apply it and move
- 3:44Speaker 2: forward without it affecting them negatively. And that's why these guys,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, are having the success that they're having in
- 3:51Speaker 2: their lives and playing major college football because they're built
- 3:54Speaker 2: like that. And it's not easy, but it is something
- 3:59Speaker 2: that you have to talk about, you have to dress.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I don't think you can ever.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I don't think you can ever ignore the fact that
- 4:06Speaker 2: there's going to be adversity this season. We talk about it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I'll talk about it right before
- 4:10Speaker 2: the game. You know, hey, we got to take take
- 4:13Speaker 2: this game six seconds at a time. Whether it's a
- 4:15Speaker 2: good play or a bad play, you got to learn, apply,
- 4:19Speaker 2: move through it, and get on to the next play.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And so you can adopt that mindset and have resilience
- 4:25Speaker 2: and you have a chance, and you know, I'm just
- 4:28Speaker 2: proud of our guys for the way they just go
- 4:30Speaker 2: on about their business. Mike, success can be as big
- 4:34Speaker 2: a dangerous failure, you know. You know, you can't let
- 4:37Speaker 2: victory defeat you, and our guys have done a really
- 4:41Speaker 2: good job of just staying in the moment.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And your players reflect that too. We're going to talk
- 4:46Speaker 1: to Cam Chadwick and Antonio o'harris a little bit later
- 4:49Speaker 1: in the show, and they they, you know, reflect what
- 4:53Speaker 1: you're talking about, but it comes natural to them. It
- 4:56Speaker 1: seems to me when I talk to the players every week,
- 5:00Speaker 1: well say things that you have said, or you know,
- 5:03Speaker 1: not necessarily repeating what you've said, but they get it right.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So and when you ask them about something like we're
- 5:09Speaker 1: talking about right now, they've made it part of their DNA,
- 5:14Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And I think that is
- 5:16Speaker 1: a huge, huge compliment to you and the coaching staff
- 5:20Speaker 1: because that's what you're trying to do. You're trying to
- 5:22Speaker 1: build a team with guys who can handle all this stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Well, you mentioned DNA, and that's what we talk about,
- 5:29Speaker 2: our husky DNA, Like, who are we what do we
- 5:31Speaker 2: made of what's important to us?
- 5:33Speaker 3: What are we going to emphasize?
- 5:35Speaker 2: And I think that you know, you can talk all
- 5:38Speaker 2: that stuff, and unless the players embrace it, it's irrelevant.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And our players embrace it. And it's about your messaging
- 5:44Speaker 2: to them. And you know, the emphasis that you make
- 5:46Speaker 2: on the things that we believe as a programer important
- 5:49Speaker 2: in our culture. And we've got good young men and
- 5:53Speaker 2: they care and they listen and they try to apply,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and I appreciate them.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and no question, and Husky Nation does too, and
- 6:02Speaker 1: certainly we do. And talking to some of your players,
- 6:05Speaker 1: thought on Skyler Bell, another big game for him, three
- 6:08Speaker 1: touchdown catches, probably should have had a fourth. I know
- 6:12Speaker 1: he'd be saying that.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I think he would. I think he'd leave the probably
- 6:15Speaker 3: out of it.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah right, yeah, oh man. When I saw that, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: called it. I said, oh, that's a touchdown, and.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Oop said it was not. But even the great.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Ones, you know, don't make every catch. So anyway, Skyler Bell,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you know, for a wide receiver to impact the game
- 6:32Speaker 1: like he has so many times this year, I mean
- 6:35Speaker 1: that that conjures up images of some of the great
- 6:38Speaker 1: receivers that I've seen, even on the NFL level.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I'm thinking of Jerry Rice. Are guys like that. He's
- 6:44Speaker 3: tough to cover. He is impactful. You know.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I think we've always we've talked a lot about Skyler,
- 6:50Speaker 2: and I think Skyler would want me to mention that
- 6:53Speaker 2: that offensive line is doing a really great job as
- 6:55Speaker 2: our tight ends and our backs are as well and
- 6:57Speaker 2: blocking and protecting. And then Joe and him report and
- 7:00Speaker 2: the confidence they've gotten each other.
- 7:02Speaker 3: But Skyler's special.
- 7:04Speaker 2: You know, it doesn't matter what they try to do
- 7:06Speaker 2: to cover Skyler or he seems to find a way
- 7:08Speaker 2: to get open. I think that's a credit to our
- 7:10Speaker 2: offensive staff doing some creative things and then Skyler embracing
- 7:13Speaker 2: those things that we're trying to do to get him open.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And it was interesting on Saturday. I thought they'd try
- 7:20Speaker 2: to double him more. There were some times they you know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: like that touchdown up the middle, they didn't even cover him.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So you know, it's interesting. But he's really having a
- 7:29Speaker 2: good year. And you know, you got there to practice
- 7:33Speaker 2: on Tuesday and first day back after big game, and
- 7:36Speaker 2: he's just as determined ever as ever to have a
- 7:38Speaker 2: great practice. And that's what the great ones do.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yep, that's true.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Never satisfied, you know, absolutely, and I think that's the
- 7:45Speaker 1: best part of sports in some ways. All right, we'll
- 7:47Speaker 1: be back with Jim more quick time out. You're listening
- 7:50Speaker 1: to the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Lear Fields.
