- 0:00Speaker 1: Got something in my inbox earlier today from a bet
- 0:02Speaker 1: online dot ag and it were it was odds, the
- 0:07Speaker 1: betting odds for for Daniel Jones's next team, and I
- 0:14Speaker 1: clicked on it just out of I just guess, just
- 0:17Speaker 1: out of curiosity, because he's a guy who was a
- 0:20Speaker 1: former number six overall pick and it went it went
- 0:25Speaker 1: so badly there in New York down the stretch. But
- 0:29Speaker 1: I also thought, like, would the Saints have odds? Well?
- 0:32Speaker 1: As I clicked on it. The betting favorite is the
- 0:34Speaker 1: Baltimore Ravens, And it would make some sense because you'd
- 0:38Speaker 1: probably look at at contenders. You probably look at contenders
- 0:43Speaker 1: first because obviously, from his standpoint, he'd want to go
- 0:50Speaker 1: somewhere where he might have a chance to win. And
- 0:52Speaker 1: from a contender standpoint, you'd want to bolter bolster that
- 0:56Speaker 1: quarterback room in case you needed a veteran backup. So
- 0:59Speaker 1: it may make sense the Baltimore Ravens have the best
- 1:01Speaker 1: dodge you can pull us up. Paully Vikings next, and look,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I mean they got JJ McCarthy who's missing the entire season.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But Sam Darnold hasn't playing well. I mean he bears
- 1:10Speaker 1: an overtime yesterday Raiders who don't really have a planet
- 1:15Speaker 1: quarterback Cowboys, which Dack's done for the year, So that
- 1:18Speaker 1: might make some sense if you're not going to commit
- 1:20Speaker 1: to Cooper Rush or Trey Lance, Lions and other contender.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And then you get to Dolphins as well, Niners. Then
- 1:27Speaker 1: some longer odds teams Panthers, Seahawks, Colts, and then it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: twenty five to one. There's a group of teams that
- 1:35Speaker 1: includes the Patriots, the Jets, the Titans, and the Saints.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And so I just thought about it, like what would
- 1:44Speaker 1: that look like? And I'm certain for Daniel Jones he
- 1:50Speaker 1: wants to be a starter again in the NFL, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: that's great. Good for him. Pursue an opportunity, maybe New Beginnings,
- 1:58Speaker 1: you could find the spot. I mean, Jones is a guy,
- 2:01Speaker 1: after all, that won a playoff game. I mean in
- 2:04Speaker 1: New York a couple of years ago they beat the
- 2:06Speaker 1: thirteen and four Minnesota Vikings. So he has quarterbacked the
- 2:10Speaker 1: team not only to the playoffs, but to a playoff win.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So I mean, it's not all terrible. Now He's played
- 2:22Speaker 1: in seventy games with sixty nine starts, and his record
- 2:25Speaker 1: is twenty four forty four and one, again not good,
- 2:30Speaker 1: went to a bad situation, won three games in his
- 2:32Speaker 1: first year, then five, then four, then boom. There was
- 2:34Speaker 1: the nine to six and one year where they made
- 2:35Speaker 1: the playoffs and won a playoff game anyway, and they
- 2:37Speaker 1: gave him a giant contract, which was clearly misstime. That's
- 2:40Speaker 1: on the Giants. I don't really care. What I look
- 2:43Speaker 1: at it from standpoint is a quality backup. And if
- 2:49Speaker 1: you gave me the option of a rookie cutting their
- 2:52Speaker 1: teeth finding their way or a veteran backup, I would
- 2:57Speaker 1: take the veteran backup nine times out of ten. Would
- 3:00Speaker 1: be if your team stinks and you're trying to build
- 3:02Speaker 1: and develop your rookie for the future, maybe even like
- 3:07Speaker 1: if you drafted a high level rookie like a first
- 3:11Speaker 1: second rounder. Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia is a great example.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It took a swing in round two to see if
- 3:18Speaker 1: Hurts could become their quarterback of the future, and he
- 3:21Speaker 1: was there behind Nick Foles and Carson Wentz and then
- 3:26Speaker 1: ultimately got the job. But I look at the Saints
- 3:33Speaker 1: this year, right, Derek Carr's your starter. You paid him
- 3:37Speaker 1: a ton to be your starter, and you had a
- 3:40Speaker 1: couple of guys you drafted behind him, and you don't
- 3:43Speaker 1: know what they're Their future may be may hold. But
- 3:48Speaker 1: I look at where the Saints are right now at
- 3:50Speaker 1: four and seven, and when Carr got hurt, he missed
- 3:54Speaker 1: three games and you went zero and three with Spencer
- 3:58Speaker 1: Rattler as your starter. I'm not going to tell you that.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Man they had Danny Dimes, boy, they'd be a playoff team.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But could you have found a way to scratch out
- 4:07Speaker 1: one of those wins? Like could you've beaten Denver on
- 4:11Speaker 1: a Thursday night in New Orleans? Maybe? I know the
- 4:14Speaker 1: defense stunk, but look at the second half against Tampa. Now,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you gave him a fifty one against Tampa, but a
- 4:21Speaker 1: lot of that also had to do with how bad
- 4:23Speaker 1: your offense was and turning the football over. If you
- 4:26Speaker 1: had a veteran that could steady, you might have been different.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I don't know, But could you have scratched out and
- 4:31Speaker 1: winning at home against the Chargers or on excuse me
- 4:33Speaker 1: of the road against the Charges? Maybe maybe not out
- 4:35Speaker 1: of lot, but one win in that stretch and we're
- 4:41Speaker 1: talking mathematically about a dramatically different path for the Saints
- 4:44Speaker 1: this year. And we saw that play out in twenty
- 4:47Speaker 1: twenty with Jamis backing up New Orleans backing up Drew Brees,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and in twenty eighteen with Teddy Bridgewater backing up Drew Brees.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And so, if nothing else, with that experience with Drew
- 4:57Speaker 1: Brees and the more veteran backups as opposed to our
- 4:59Speaker 1: Chase Daniel was this guy who backed him up forever.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And it was really a thing where Chase Daniels was
- 5:04Speaker 1: the backup because Drew liked him and wanted another set
- 5:07Speaker 1: of eyes when he came to the sideline he could
- 5:09Speaker 1: talk to him. Not that you ever thought you'd win
- 5:11Speaker 1: anything at all with Chase Daniel, but as you had
- 5:13Speaker 1: an aging veteran quarterback who suffered injuries, you needed someone
- 5:18Speaker 1: that could keep the train on the tracks until your
- 5:20Speaker 1: starter came back. So I look at that as great
- 5:24Speaker 1: value if you can have a veteran player like that
- 5:27Speaker 1: who started sixty nine career games, who's played in the playoffs,
- 5:33Speaker 1: as a guy on the ready or at the ready
- 5:36Speaker 1: if you needed him. So I'm not sitting here trying
- 5:39Speaker 1: to tell you, hey, go Ham and make Daniel Jones
- 5:42Speaker 1: your future. I certainly wouldn't do that. I don't know
- 5:44Speaker 1: if there's a single team in the NFL that would
- 5:47Speaker 1: do that, shouldn't do that. But would I rather Daniel
- 5:53Speaker 1: Jones as the backup in New Orleans over Spencer Ratler
- 5:56Speaker 1: and Jake Hayner. Ah, absolutely, no question. I might prefer
- 6:03Speaker 1: Daniel Jones as the starter over Derek Carr. I'm not
- 6:05Speaker 1: committing to that pot committed right now, but at least
- 6:09Speaker 1: with Daniel Jones, you're talking about a guy that's twenty
- 6:12Speaker 1: seven years old as opposed to car who's thirty three,
- 6:15Speaker 1: who's been a starter for eleven years, and we know
- 6:17Speaker 1: what he is, the mid tier quarterback. I'm not saying
- 6:20Speaker 1: Jones will ever be more than that, but could he
- 6:23Speaker 1: find a resurgence somewhere else? Maybe maybe not, but a
- 6:29Speaker 1: viable backup option. He's better than what you got. And
- 6:33Speaker 1: if you're a GM worth your salt, you should take
- 6:35Speaker 1: a look at every spot on your roster all the time.
- 6:39Speaker 1: All consists continuously, it's in ever evolving, a daily evolving process.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Do see if there is somewhat available who's better than
- 6:46Speaker 1: who you have right now and today, Daniel Jones is
- 6:49Speaker 1: a backup, is a better option than Spencer ratlerd and
- 6:51Speaker 1: Jay Hayner. And if you're not going to commit to
- 6:54Speaker 1: either of those guys long term, I'm not saying you
- 6:56Speaker 1: have to then, Yet I think Daniel owns a better option. Now,
- 7:05Speaker 1: if you sign one of those guys your practice squad,
- 7:07Speaker 1: there's a really good chance someone could sign them off
- 7:09Speaker 1: your practice squad to their active roster and you'd lose
- 7:12Speaker 1: them like you did with the Ian Book a few
- 7:13Speaker 1: years ago, and so you'd lose your draft capital and
- 7:17Speaker 1: everything you have invested in those young players. But if
- 7:20Speaker 1: you don't feel like those young players are your future anyway,
- 7:22Speaker 1: then what do you do in that position? You got
- 7:24Speaker 1: to get better. And I'm not saying go break the
- 7:26Speaker 1: bank for but and I don't even know that having
- 7:30Speaker 1: an experienced backup really matters this year because I don't
- 7:32Speaker 1: think the Saints are going on some amazing run of
- 7:34Speaker 1: the playoffs anyway. But for twenty twenty five, whatever direction
- 7:40Speaker 1: you're going, that could make a lot of sense as
- 7:43Speaker 1: a veteran viable backup quarterback. We've seen former high level
- 7:47Speaker 1: starters become great backups. Marcus Mariota did it after being
- 7:50Speaker 1: the second overall pick. Jamis did it. I mean it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: kind of the way of it, and he could be
- 7:55Speaker 1: an option in that respect. If I'm saying, I'm certainly
- 7:58Speaker 1: looking at it because he's a better option you got
- 7:59Speaker 1: right now. By Derek Carr
