- 0:01Y'all,
- 0:03that was super fun. Okay, so here's a
- 0:05question for you guys. Um, do any of you
- 0:07have to do I know some of you are
- 0:09homeschooled, so this may not apply to
- 0:10all of you guys, but but but don't you
- 0:13guys do you guys ever have like group
- 0:15projects for school?
- 0:17>> For homeschool homeschool folks, do you
- 0:19also have to do group projects or like
- 0:21No,
- 0:22>> kind of. Okay, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Do
- 0:24you guys like group projects?
- 0:27>> Thumbs up for group projects. One, two.
- 0:30Thumbs down for group projects.
- 0:33Mostly thumbs down for group projects.
- 0:35Yeah. So, so, so I was I was in the I
- 0:38hate group projects camp for sure cuz I
- 0:41fall I always felt like you'd have a
- 0:43group of like five students uh who were
- 0:45in a group and then one of them was like
- 0:47the straight A student who would end up
- 0:49doing all the work and then the other
- 0:51four would be like the horse and rider
- 0:53and just be like coasting on that
- 0:55person. uh just like letting them do all
- 0:57the work and take the A, right? Have any
- 0:59of you guys ever had that experience
- 1:00before?
- 1:02>> Yes. Yes. No. Thumbs up. Yes. Uh hands
- 1:04up if you're the one who does all the
- 1:06work. I feel like that's the same people
- 1:08who said they don't like group projects.
- 1:10Hands up if you're the one who just like
- 1:11takes the A. Gabriel. Yeah. The people
- 1:14who like group projects are like, "Yeah,
- 1:16I love it. I don't have to do any work.
- 1:17This is great." So So I remember I
- 1:21remember a group project that I had to
- 1:22work on when I was in college. And if
- 1:24you guys remember when I went to
- 1:25college, I decided I didn't want to make
- 1:27any money when I grew up. So I went to
- 1:28acting college and the assignment in
- 1:31acting college was that me and six of my
- 1:33classmates were supposed to put on this
- 1:35production of the Shakespeare play
- 1:37McBTH. And my professor had like given
- 1:40us all these assignments and one of the
- 1:42guys in our group was assigned to be the
- 1:43director. Okay, it wasn't me. And the
- 1:45very first rehearsal that we had, our
- 1:47director, right, the guy who's supposed
- 1:49to be telling everybody how to do
- 1:50things, he tries to give like a little
- 1:52bit of feedback to one of the other
- 1:53actors in our group, and she like
- 1:56reacted super negatively to being told,
- 1:58"Hey, you know, you're doing this thing
- 2:00wrong." And so he was like, "All right,
- 2:02I don't want to be the director anymore.
- 2:03I'm going to just like shut up and say
- 2:04my lines. Like, I'm not I'm not doing
- 2:07anything." And so for the next month of
- 2:10us practicing for this play, doing our
- 2:12rehearsals, we had to practice for the
- 2:14play with no director. And our play was
- 2:17terrible. It was it was it sucked. It
- 2:20sucked. We had nobody to tell us like if
- 2:23the scenes were taking too long or if we
- 2:25didn't know our lines or if the
- 2:27interactions between the characters
- 2:28looked like we were robots or whatever
- 2:30or if the fight scenes look fake, any of
- 2:32that stuff. And then like two weeks
- 2:34before we were supposed to go up and
- 2:36perform, I said to myself, "Okay,
- 2:38somebody needs to like be the director,
- 2:41otherwise our performance is going to be
- 2:43terrible." And you got to remember
- 2:44acting school, right? So like we're
- 2:45getting a grade for if this thing sucks
- 2:47or not. So what I started doing is at
- 2:49the end of each of the practices for the
- 2:51play, I would like grab all the other
- 2:53people, not physically, but I would grab
- 2:54all the other people and I started
- 2:56giving them notes. I would be like, "Hey
- 2:57dude, you need to like learn your lines,
- 2:59right?" Or, "Hey, this scene needs to
- 3:00move faster." or hey, you need to like
- 3:02come in quicker in that moment, right?
- 3:04And I waited for one of my my classmates
- 3:07to tell me, "Hey, bro, you're not the
- 3:09director. Shut up and say your lines."
- 3:11But no one did. And the night of our f
- 3:14of our performance, it came and the last
- 3:16scene ends and my character has just
- 3:18like gotten his head cut off because
- 3:20Shakespeare is awesome. Uh, so my
- 3:22character's gotten his head cut off and
- 3:23I'm standing off stage just like
- 3:25watching the rest of the scene go down.
- 3:27And as the last scene ends, the whole
- 3:30audience stands up and bursts into
- 3:33tears. Like screaming, singing, crying.
- 3:37They didn't cry, but like the whole
- 3:38audience burst into tears, standing
- 3:40ovation, the whole thing. It was
- 3:41awesome. And I bring all that up at the
- 3:43beginning of this not to say that our
- 3:45performance was the best out of all the
- 3:47groups in my college class, although it
- 3:49definitely was. Uh, and not to say
- 3:52because like it was totally because I
- 3:54stepped in and gave notes that it got
- 3:55better. Although that is definitely why
- 3:57it was good, but it's because I think
- 4:00that human beings are built to be led.
- 4:04Okay? Human beings are built to be led.
- 4:06That's going to be a big theme I'm going
- 4:07to come back to. Human beings are built
- 4:09to be led. And I think that God put that
- 4:12in us. That he put in us a desire to be
- 4:15led because he meant for himself to be
- 4:18the one to lead us. Right? That's going
- 4:21to be an important theme this week and
- 4:23next week in the next two I am
- 4:25statements that Jesus makes in the
- 4:27Gospel of John. Okay. So, if you've been
- 4:30here the last few weeks, for the last
- 4:31few weeks, we've been going through this
- 4:32series called I am who I am. And each
- 4:35week we're highlighting one of these
- 4:38important statements Jesus makes about
- 4:40himself. These seven I am statements
- 4:43that tell us about his identity and his
- 4:47mission. Right? These are metaphors that
- 4:49Jesus gives to say, hey, this is who I
- 4:51am. This is what I'm all about. This is
- 4:53why I'm here on earth. And with each one
- 4:55of those statements, he starts off with
- 4:57this phrase, I am. And my challenge for
- 5:00this whole series has been for you guys
- 5:03to remember each of those I am
- 5:05statements. So, real quick, I'm going to
- 5:06give you guys a chance to show me if
- 5:08you've been paying attention. Does
- 5:09anybody remember in week one, we talked
- 5:11about the name of God. Does anyone
- 5:12remember what it is?
- 5:14>> I am who I am. Thank you, Samuel. Does
- 5:16anybody remember it in Hebrew?
- 5:20We didn't talk about it. It was Yahweh.
- 5:21Yes, definitely Yahweh. And week two, we
- 5:24talked about Jesus's first I am
- 5:27statement. Does anybody remember what it
- 5:28was? of life.
- 5:29>> I am the bread of life. Very nice. Does
- 5:32anybody remember what I am the bread of
- 5:33life means?
- 5:36Jesus is the provider. He's the one who
- 5:38feeds us spiritually and looks after us
- 5:41in that way. In week three, that's last
- 5:43week, we talked about the second
- 5:45statement. Anybody remember?
- 5:47I am the light of the world. You sounded
- 5:49like creepy murder twins there. That was
- 5:52weird. I am the light of the world. That
- 5:55means that Jesus is the light who comes
- 5:57to defeat the powers of darkness. Right?
- 5:59And if we are with Jesus, if we are in
- 6:02Jesus, that means we don't have to walk
- 6:04in darkness in the world. And in this
- 6:06week, we're going to hit the third of
- 6:08Jesus's I am statements. That statement
- 6:11is I am the gate for the sheep. I am the
- 6:16gate for the sheep. Hands up if you've
- 6:18heard I am the gate for the sheep
- 6:20before. A couple of you. Hands up if
- 6:22you've never heard I am the gate for the
- 6:23sheep before. Yeah. like a a bunch you I
- 6:25think this is one of the like less known
- 6:27ones before I don't think I'd ever heard
- 6:30I am the gate for the sheep in a sermon
- 6:31before I started working on this series.
- 6:34So to give you guys the setup for this
- 6:36statement um for the last few weeks
- 6:39every week I've been kind of emphasizing
- 6:41I've been talking about how there's this
- 6:42beef between Jesus and the religious
- 6:45leaders all throughout his ministry.
- 6:47Right? So Jesus has come on earth to be
- 6:50the bread of life, to be the light of
- 6:52the world, to be the son of God living
- 6:55among us. And the religious leaders
- 6:57don't like it. They're not about it at
- 6:59all. See, the religious leaders are used
- 7:01to being the most respected, the most
- 7:04influential, the most important,
- 7:06powerful guys in the Jewish system. And
- 7:09then here comes Jesus and he goes,
- 7:11"Actually, you religious leaders are
- 7:14just as messed up, just as corrupt, just
- 7:16as morally darkened as all of the people
- 7:19who you're supposed to be leading. And
- 7:21actually, you're worse because you say
- 7:23that you're leading people toward God,
- 7:25but really you're just as bad as they
- 7:27are." So the religious leaders, they
- 7:30hate what Jesus is saying. They hate
- 7:33what Jesus is doing. In the last chapter
- 7:35before where we'll be in chapter 10, the
- 7:37religious leaders have just gotten mad
- 7:40at Jesus. Get this. They've gotten mad
- 7:42at Jesus for healing a blind dude.
- 7:46They Jesus heals a blind dude on the
- 7:48Sabbath and they get mad at Jesus for
- 7:49healing him on the Sabbath. They get mad
- 7:51at the blind dude because the blind dude
- 7:53won't talk trash about Jesus. And in the
- 7:56middle of that whole situation with
- 7:58Jesus going back and forth with the
- 7:59religious leaders, he says this. John
- 8:0210:1
- 8:03he says, "I tell you the truth, anyone
- 8:06who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold
- 8:09rather than going through the gate must
- 8:12surely be a thief and a robber. But the
- 8:15one who enters through the gate is the
- 8:17shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper
- 8:19opens the gate for him, and the sheep
- 8:21recognize his voice and come to him. He
- 8:25calls his own sheep by name and leads
- 8:27them out. After he has gathered his own
- 8:30flock, he walks ahead of them and they
- 8:32follow him because they know his voice.
- 8:35They won't follow a stranger. They will
- 8:37follow they will run from him because
- 8:39they don't know his voice.
- 8:42Do you ever guys do you guys ever read a
- 8:44passage from the Bible and you're like,
- 8:45I have no idea what that means?
- 8:48No, you guys not. You're all like, every
- 8:51time I read the Bible, I'm like, this is
- 8:52perfect. I totally get it. Dude, I I am
- 8:55like that. Okay. I totally sometimes
- 8:57read the Bible and I'm like, I have no
- 8:58idea what that means. Ava and I have
- 9:00been on the same Bible reading plan uh
- 9:03since the new year. And sometimes she'll
- 9:05be like making breakfast and she'll be
- 9:07like, "What did you learn in the Bible
- 9:08reading this morning?" She doesn't sound
- 9:10like that, but she'll be like, "What did
- 9:11you learn in the Bible reading this
- 9:12morning?" And I'm like, "Dude, I have no
- 9:13idea what I just read straight up."
- 9:17And that's why I like like that over
- 9:19here we have we have so many English
- 9:21Bible translations. First, some of you
- 9:23are mocking my my Ava impression.
- 9:26Uh, so I love that we have so many
- 9:28different Bible translations. That's one
- 9:30of the reasons why over here we have a
- 9:32stack of English Standard Version. We
- 9:33also you we teach out of the New Living
- 9:36Translation on Sunday nights because
- 9:38sometimes it's just a little easier to
- 9:39understand, right? Sometimes those more
- 9:41word for word translations are just
- 9:43hard, right? But what I love about the
- 9:46Bible as we read through this passage,
- 9:48what I love about the Bible is that the
- 9:49Bible is just like straight up about
- 9:52people, right? That these are real
- 9:54people like you and me. So, I don't know
- 9:56about you guys, but when I read this
- 9:58passage and I go, "Dang, Jesus, I don't
- 10:01understand what you mean by that." We
- 10:04keep reading in verse six, it says,
- 10:06"Those who heard Jesus use this
- 10:08illustration didn't understand what he
- 10:11meant." I love that. I think that's
- 10:13awesome. So he explained it to them.
- 10:15Thank you Jesus. He says, 'I tell you
- 10:17the truth. I am the gate for the sheep.
- 10:21All who came before me were thieves and
- 10:23robbers, but the true sheep did not
- 10:26listen to them. Yes, I am the gate.
- 10:29Those who come in through me will be
- 10:31saved. They will come and go freely and
- 10:34will find good pastures. The thief's
- 10:37purpose is to steal and kill and
- 10:39destroy. My purpose is to give them a
- 10:42rich and satisfying life. If you were
- 10:45here when I first started with Switch
- 10:47when we went through the good life
- 10:49series we did back in August, you'll
- 10:50remember that that verse, that last
- 10:52verse uh is one of the the verses that
- 10:55we highlighted in that p in that series,
- 10:57right? That Jesus comes to give us the
- 10:59abundant life. He comes to give us just
- 11:01a life overflowing with goodness. Okay,
- 11:05so let's break down the passage. So
- 11:07Jesus starts off with this like big old
- 11:09metaphor about himself to set up this I
- 11:12am statement, right? He says that the
- 11:14people of God can be compared to a group
- 11:17of sheep, a flock of sheep. And his
- 11:19audience back like 2,000 years ago, they
- 11:21would all know that sheep need to be
- 11:25led. Does that sound familiar? I said
- 11:27that before. Sheep need to be led.
- 11:29People need to be led. Right? See,
- 11:32unlike almost any other animal in the
- 11:35wild, a sheep does not have any natural
- 11:37defenses against predators. They can't
- 11:40run fast. They can't climb trees,
- 11:42although that would be sick. They can't
- 11:44hide. They can't fight off wolves.
- 11:47Right. The one protection that a sheep
- 11:50has against predators is what?
- 11:53>> The shepherd. Exactly. And next week,
- 11:56we're actually going to go into the
- 11:57fourth I am statement in the Gospel of
- 12:00John. comes right after this passage
- 12:02we're in tonight and it's I am the good
- 12:04shepherd. But I don't want us to skip
- 12:06past the part that might be a little
- 12:07like harder to follow in order to get
- 12:08one that's easier to wrap our minds
- 12:10around. Right? So Jesus says, I am not
- 12:12the shepherd, but I am the gate for the
- 12:15sheep. He mentions two kinds of people
- 12:18who might be trying to get into the
- 12:20sheep pen, who might be trying to get at
- 12:21the sheep when they're all tucked in in
- 12:23the sheep pen at night, right? He says
- 12:25that there's the shepherd who comes
- 12:27through the gate and his whole job is to
- 12:30guide the sheep and take care of the
- 12:32sheep and protect the sheep. And then
- 12:34there's the robber who can't come
- 12:36through the gate because he doesn't have
- 12:37the key. And so he jumps the fence to
- 12:40try and steal the sheep. The robber
- 12:42isn't there to protect the sheep or look
- 12:44after the sheep. He's there to kill the
- 12:46sheep and eat the sheep and exploit the
- 12:49sheep. Right? Which of those two groups
- 12:52of people do you think Jesus is saying
- 12:53these religious leaders are? Do you
- 12:55think he's saying they're the the
- 12:56shepherd or the robber?
- 12:58>> The robber. Exactly. That's why he says
- 13:00it. And this actually isn't the first
- 13:03time that God has used this metaphor
- 13:05that God has compared his people to a
- 13:07flock of sheep. Right. I told you sheep
- 13:09need to be led. People need to be led.
- 13:13So back in the Old Testament when the
- 13:15people of Israel were like out here
- 13:17doing all kinds of crazy stuff. They're
- 13:18chasing after false gods and immorality.
- 13:21when the leaders who are supposed to be
- 13:22leading the people and pointing them
- 13:24toward God were instead like leading
- 13:26them after sin, right? God had this to
- 13:29say in Ezekiel 34. This is not Jesus
- 13:33being talked to, but this is God
- 13:35speaking to a dude. He says, "Son of
- 13:37man, prophesy against the shepherds, the
- 13:40leaders of Israel. Give them this
- 13:43message from the sovereign Lord. What
- 13:45sorrow awaits you shepherds who feed
- 13:48yourselves instead of your flocks?
- 13:51Shouldn't shepherds feed their sheep?
- 13:54You drink the milk, wear the wool, and
- 13:56butcher the best animals, but you let
- 13:59your flocks starve. You have not taken
- 14:02care of the weak. You have not tended
- 14:04the sick or bound up the injured. You
- 14:06have not gone looking for those who have
- 14:08wandered away and are lost. Instead, you
- 14:11have ruled them with harshness and
- 14:13cruelty.
- 14:15And in that passage in Ezekiel 34, God
- 14:18goes on to talk about how because the
- 14:21leaders of Israel have failed to
- 14:23shepherd their sheep faithfully, now
- 14:25God's going to come and he's going to be
- 14:27the shepherd himself. It's like this
- 14:29super cool Old Testament reference to
- 14:31what Jesus is going to talk about next
- 14:33week, right? It's an Old Testament
- 14:35promise pointing forward to Jesus, the
- 14:38son of God, coming to lead the people.
- 14:41And so, like literally the entire talk
- 14:43next week is going to be about that
- 14:44point. But what he's saying this week is
- 14:46that he's the gate for the sheep. That
- 14:49means that Jesus is the one true leader
- 14:52for the people of God, for the church.
- 14:55And that or or rather that any true
- 14:57leader for the people of God, for the
- 14:59church has got to come through Jesus.
- 15:02The religious leaders who have been
- 15:04trying to lead the people before are
- 15:06robbers instead of shepherds because
- 15:08they won't come through Jesus. They want
- 15:12to hold on to their own power, their own
- 15:14position, their own influence, their own
- 15:17authority, right? And Jesus says that
- 15:19his leaders, his shepherds need to be
- 15:22servants of everyone.
- 15:25At my old youth group, we used to say,
- 15:27if you want to be the top dog, you got
- 15:29to be a bottom dog. which sounds really
- 15:33stupid, but in Jesus's words, he says,
- 15:35"Whoever wants to be a leader among you
- 15:38must be your servant, and whoever wants
- 15:40to be first among you must become your
- 15:43slave."
- 15:44Top dog, bottom dog. And this passage,
- 15:48you guys, this passage, this message is
- 15:50literally, it is for me as much as it is
- 15:53for you guys. It's for Pastor Ryan back
- 15:55there as much as it is for you guys.
- 15:57Jesus's warning here is a warning to
- 16:00anyone who wants to serve or lead in
- 16:03ministry. As a pastor, as a chaplain, as
- 16:07a Bible study leader, as a worship
- 16:10leader, as somebody who just wants to
- 16:12like talk to your friends about Jesus,
- 16:14all of it. And so before you guys hear
- 16:16me say all of what's what I'm saying and
- 16:19go, "All right, bet. I can stop
- 16:20listening. I'm trying to grow up and be
- 16:22like a video game designer. I'm not
- 16:24trying to do anything in ministry or
- 16:26like I'm going to get rich trading meme
- 16:27coins. That's what one of my old you
- 16:29students tried to do. I want you to
- 16:31remember what we said a few weeks ago
- 16:34about Jesus about rather what our
- 16:36mission is as followers of Jesus. Right?
- 16:39We're called to live sent. Whatever you
- 16:44do in your life, in your career, if
- 16:45you're trading meme coins, if you're a
- 16:47video game designer, if you're like a
- 16:48cop or a stay at home mom, whatever you
- 16:50do, you are called to be disciples who
- 16:54make disciples, right? We're called to
- 16:57that mission. Be disciples who make
- 17:00disciples. So, with that in mind, here's
- 17:03a couple of takeaways from this passage.
- 17:05Okay? Jesus gives us two qualifications
- 17:09for us as shepherds, for you and me as
- 17:11shepherds. And he gives a warning for
- 17:14you and me as sheep because we're
- 17:16shepherds. We're also sheep. So here's
- 17:18qualification number one. Jesus says,
- 17:20"True shepherds come through Jesus."
- 17:24True shepherds come through Jesus. Where
- 17:27I grew up, and I mention this every
- 17:28week, but where I grew up, it is a very
- 17:31fashionable thing to say like, "Yeah,
- 17:33sure. Okay, Jesus works for me, but like
- 17:35I wouldn't want to push my beliefs on
- 17:36anybody else."
- 17:38I remember I was once telling a friend
- 17:40who was Christian about how I was like
- 17:42praying for my friends who didn't know
- 17:44Jesus to come to faith in Jesus. And she
- 17:47goes, "Why?
- 17:49Doesn't that sound kind of arrogant to
- 17:51want your friends to believe what you
- 17:53believe?" And I was like, "Bro, what?
- 17:57Not if it's true."
- 17:59And that was the moment where I was
- 18:00like, "I don't know if you're a
- 18:01Christian if you're saying that." Jesus
- 18:03said that he is the bread of life. That
- 18:06he is the light of the world. That he is
- 18:09the only way for human beings to be made
- 18:11right with God. Apart from Jesus, you
- 18:15and I are condemned in our sins. And any
- 18:18religion that comes along and preaches
- 18:20that there is another way to God. Any
- 18:23religion that says, "Yeah, we're all
- 18:25just following the same God, right? We
- 18:27all understand him in different ways."
- 18:28Right? It's like that elephant metaphor
- 18:30where it's like you're touching the
- 18:31trunk and I'm touching the tail. Any of
- 18:33that stuff and it might make me feel the
- 18:36warm fuzz Samuel has no idea what I'm
- 18:38talking about. We can talk about that in
- 18:40small group. So, uh any any religion
- 18:44that says that it might give me the warm
- 18:46fuzzies to say that and say that to
- 18:48other people, but that is not what Jesus
- 18:50believed about himself.
- 18:54There are a million false beliefs out
- 18:56there that will try to get away from the
- 18:58true Jesus. There will people who there
- 19:00will be people who come along and tell
- 19:02you, "Yeah, you can follow the commands
- 19:04of God without needing Jesus." Right?
- 19:06That's what the religious leaders were
- 19:08doing. You can there are some that will
- 19:09tell you that, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, you
- 19:10need Jesus and also you need a bunch of
- 19:13other stuff, right? You need to keep
- 19:14kosher, you need to follow certain Old
- 19:16Testament rules, any of that stuff."
- 19:18There's people who tell you that like,
- 19:19"Yeah, you need to follow Jesus." But
- 19:21then you hear them talk about Jesus and
- 19:23you're like, "That is not the Jesus in
- 19:25the Bible, right?" They'll talk about,
- 19:27"Oh, Jesus wasn't really God or Jesus
- 19:29didn't really get raised from the dead
- 19:31or Jesus was just a good moral teacher,
- 19:33but I followed Jesus." It's like, bro,
- 19:35that's not Jesus. That's not the Jesus
- 19:38of the Bible.
- 19:40There are a million false beliefs that
- 19:42will tell you and me how we need to get
- 19:45right with God. And there are a million
- 19:47false teachers who will try to sneak
- 19:49around Jesus around the gate in order to
- 19:53lead the sheep where they want them to
- 19:55go. Jesus says that those false teachers
- 19:59aren't almost shepherds or like confused
- 20:03shepherds or they're well-intentioned
- 20:05shepherds. They're really trying. He
- 20:07said that those people who will try to
- 20:09lead you after a false Jesus are thieves
- 20:12and robbers.
- 20:14So, what about true shepherds? Right?
- 20:16So, here's qualification number two if
- 20:18you're taking notes. Jesus says that
- 20:19true shepherds are servants, caretakers,
- 20:23and defenders of the sheep. True
- 20:27shepherds are servants, caretakers, and
- 20:29defenders of the sheep. Okay? Next week,
- 20:32we're going to go into this idea of like
- 20:33the good shepherd where Jesus identifies
- 20:36himself as being the ultimate shepherd.
- 20:38But what I want to say right now is that
- 20:40you and I are called to be shepherds in
- 20:43our schools, in our workplaces, with our
- 20:46families, in our friend groups. We are
- 20:48called to be shepherds modeled after the
- 20:52ultimate shepherd. Okay? The passage
- 20:55says that true shepherds lead the sheep.
- 20:59And that means you got to lead the
- 21:00sheep. You got to live it out yourself.
- 21:02You've got to walk with your life being
- 21:05daily shaped and molded by the Holy
- 21:08Spirit living in you. Going where the
- 21:10Holy Spirit tells you to go, doing what
- 21:12the Holy Spirit tells you to do. And he
- 21:14says, "People will follow after you."
- 21:19The Apostle Paul writing in one of his
- 21:20letters to one of the New Testament
- 21:22churches, he tells them, "You should
- 21:24imitate me just like I imitate Christ."
- 21:28If all your friends imitated you, would
- 21:31they look more like Jesus?
- 21:34And I promise you, people will be way,
- 21:36way more influenced by the way you live
- 21:39your life than by the message you
- 21:40preached. That doesn't mean it doesn't
- 21:42matter if the Jesus that we're telling
- 21:44people about is the actual Jesus of the
- 21:47Bible, right? Like I said just a second
- 21:48ago, that matters a ton. But if the
- 21:51world hears us preaching that the
- 21:53kingdom life of Jesus really is a better
- 21:56way than the way of the world, but then
- 21:59we don't live it out ourselves.
- 22:02That says something about whether we
- 22:03actually believe it, right?
- 22:06The passage says that true shepherds
- 22:09lead the sheep, but also true shepherds
- 22:12are let in. In the story Jesus tells, in
- 22:15the metaphor Jesus tells, there's a
- 22:17gatekeeper who opens the door for the
- 22:19shepherd to get to the sheep. And I know
- 22:21that there are some of you in this room
- 22:23who are super on fire for Jesus, who
- 22:26want to see your friends and loved ones
- 22:29follow Christ and know Christ. And I'm
- 22:32like so jazzed about that. I want to
- 22:34encourage that. But my encouragement to
- 22:36you is as you seek Jesus, as you seek to
- 22:40be formed by the Holy Spirit, as you
- 22:43show God that you are faithful in the
- 22:45small things that he gives you today, he
- 22:48will open doors for you to do more
- 22:51tomorrow.
- 22:52There's a a pastor friend of mine from
- 22:54California who used to always say,
- 22:56"Ministry makes room for itself."
- 23:00I did not plan to be a pastor from the
- 23:02time that I was like five, six, seven
- 23:04years old.
- 23:05God spent years working on my heart and
- 23:08my character, leading me one step of
- 23:11obedience at a time before I eventually
- 23:14arrived on this stage right here doing
- 23:16full-time ministry.
- 23:18God is going to put you exactly where he
- 23:21wants you when he wants you to be there.
- 23:23And the call for you today is to say,
- 23:27"How can I be faithful with what he's
- 23:29given me today? Where are the parts of
- 23:32my heart that I haven't given over to
- 23:34Jesus? If you give today to Jesus and
- 23:38let him worry about the ministry that
- 23:40you're doing tomorrow.
- 23:43Now, I told you I was going to finish up
- 23:44with two qualifications and a warning.
- 23:47So, as Pete comes up and does the little
- 23:49piano thing, here's the warning for us
- 23:52as sheep. Learn to hear and follow the
- 23:56shepherd's voice.
- 23:58Jesus says in verse four that the sheep
- 24:01follow the shepherd because they know
- 24:03the shepherd's voice. It is such an
- 24:07encouragement for me to know that our
- 24:09good shepherd leaves the 99 sheep in
- 24:12order to come for the one that is run
- 24:15away.
- 24:17But it is on you and me to learn that
- 24:20shepherd's voice. You guys need to be
- 24:24learning the voice of Jesus through
- 24:25prayer, through reading the Bible,
- 24:28through sitting under teaching, through
- 24:30being in community with other believers.
- 24:32You cannot assume that everything that
- 24:34comes out of my mouth is true just
- 24:35because like Northwest hires me and
- 24:37pastor goes at the front of my name. You
- 24:40cannot assume that what your teachers
- 24:42say is true just because, well, they
- 24:44passed a background check and work at a
- 24:46Christian school. If you learn the voice
- 24:49of Jesus through the scriptures, it will
- 24:52protect you from being led off in the
- 24:55wrong direction by someone who says
- 24:57something that sounds good but leads to
- 24:59destruction. Because that's the thing
- 25:01about false teaching, it usually sounds
- 25:04good. It's usually just true enough that
- 25:08you steer your eyes off of Jesus just a
- 25:10little bit. But that way is the way to
- 25:13destruction.
- 25:15There are literally churches with 20,000
- 25:18people showing up every single week
- 25:20where the pastor does not speak with the
- 25:23voice of Jesus. There are entire
- 25:26movements of Christians that are built
- 25:28around a charismatic leader who says not
- 25:31what Jesus says, but what people want
- 25:33him to hear. Learn the voice of Jesus.
- 25:38And I promise you that you will find
- 25:40this. Not that he's always going to say
- 25:42the things that you want him to hear,
- 25:44but that his words are the words that
- 25:48lead to life.
- 25:50So, I'm going to close with these words
- 25:52from the end of today's passage. One
- 25:54more time in John 10:10. Jesus says
- 25:57this, "The thief's purpose is to steal
- 26:00and kill and destroy. My purpose is to
- 26:04give them a rich and satisfying life."
- 26:08That's what his purpose is for you if
- 26:11you will accept it. Let's pray.
